And along with the Spirit, a voice: "This is my Son, chosen and marked by my love, delight of my life."</p><p>&mdash;<a href="https://bible.faithlife.com/bible/niv/Matthew3.16-17" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Matthew 3:16-17</a> MESSAGE</p><h4>Key Thought</h4><p>This moment is one of incredible holiness and transcendence. The Father looks down and delights in the Son. The Spirit descends from the Father to rest on and in the Son (Luke 4:1). The Father's words are crucial for Jesus as he prepares to battle the evil one in <span class="alt">the wilderness as he is tempted after fasting for 40 days (Matthew 4:1-11)</span>. As incredible as Jesus' baptism is, we also share in this moment <span class="alt">of God's assurance</span> at our baptism. We are baptized in the name and by the authority of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19-20) and receive the Spirit to live in us (Acts 2:38-39). <span class="alt">We also share</span> with the Son in his death, burial, and resurrection for us (Romans 6:3-6). The Holy Spirit works the miraculous in us (1 Corinthians 6:11) as we are reborn (John 3:3-7) by our faith in God, who raised Jesus from the dead (Colossians 2:12; Titus 3:3-7). We are born from above through the miraculous working of the Holy Spirit (John 1:12; John 3:3-6). By faith, we also know just what God thinks about us: <span class="alt">We are</span> his children, chosen and marked by his love, the delight of his life!</p><h4>Today's Prayer</h4><p>O Father, thank you! Thank you for the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. I believe he died for my sins and was raised so I could be made perfect and righteous in your sight. Thank you for the cleansing and transforming work of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for the example of Jesus, who though perfect and not in need of repentance or baptism, was baptized anyway to fulfill all righteousness. And thank you, dear Father, for your words to Jesus when he was baptized. Through them, I know that my baptism brought you joy and delight. I thank you for these gifts, in Jesus' name. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am &#8212; so much greater that I'm not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire."</p><p>&mdash;<a href="https://bible.faithlife.com/bible/nlt/Matthew3.11" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Matthew 3:11 NLT</a></p><h4>Key Thought</h4><p>There are two sides to baptism: (1) what happens to the one being baptized based on that person's intentions, and (2) what Jesus does through the Holy Spirit. While our intentions in being baptized are important, the work of Jesus in pouring out the Spirit on us to cleanse us and to live inside us is what allows us to accomplish our intended transformation (Titus 3:3-7; 2 Corinthians 3:17-18). John the Baptizer had great power as a preacher to convict people of sin, call them to repentance, and point them to Jesus. Each of these is crucial in the lives <span class="alt">of all people intentionally preparing their hearts for Jesus</span>. John had incredible gifts, but only Jesus can baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. Only Jesus can cleanse us through the Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:11) and then come and make his home in us through the Spirit (John 14:19-23). The greatest of preachers is not worthy of carrying the sandals of the Messiah, <span class="alt">Jesus,</span> the Son of God; he is the only one capable of baptizing with the Holy Spirit and fire.</p><h4>Today's Prayer</h4><p>Righteous Father, your holiness is unattainable. But you have given it to us through the gracious gift of your Son on the cross and the cleansing, empowering, indwelling, and transforming gift of the Holy Spirit. While he was trying to figure a way out, he had a dream. God's angel spoke in the dream: "Joseph, son of David, don't hesitate to get married. Mary's pregnancy is Spirit-conceived. God's Holy Spirit has made her pregnant."</p><p>&mdash;<a href="https://bible.faithlife.com/bible/niv/Matthew1.19-20" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Matthew 1:19-20</a> MESSAGE</p><h4>Key Thought</h4><p>Joseph was not only concerned about his righteousness when Mary became pregnant; he was also concerned about Mary's reputation and future. In his deep hurt, he displayed a righteousness and faith few of us could match. So God sent his angel to Joseph to assure him that the impossible was true! Mary had not acted dishonorably. Instead, God had worked miraculously through his Spirit to bring humanity his greatest gift! Just as he did with Joseph, God reassures us that he can do the impossible and inexplicable through the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. </p><h4>Today's Prayer</h4><p>O Almighty God, our tender Abba Father, thank you for the reassurance you give us through the work of the Holy Spirit within us. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.</p><p>&mdash;<a href="https://bible.faithlife.com/bible/nlt/Matthew1.18" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Matthew 1:18 NLT</a></p><h4>Key Thought</h4><p>While we try to understand how the Spirit of God works in our lives, a deep sense of mystery, wonder, and awe remains. How could God love us so much as to be present in us through his Holy Spirit? This inexplicable miracle is a miracle of God's promise and grace. The holy and eternal God comes to life in us through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit produces great changes in us because of his presence.<br><span class="alt">Let's think about this a little differently than we normally do. The conception of Jesus the Messiah in the womb of the Virgin Mary seems incomprehensible to many. However, those of us who are followers of Jesus have experienced a small taste of what happened in Mary in our own spiritual lives. Just as Jesus came to life in her through the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit, he has also come to life in us through the same Spirit. While we didn't experience a miraculous conception, we are part of a miraculous transformation.</span><br>At the core of Jesus' gospel is this truth: <span class="alt">The Spirit</span> of God brings life where there was none. <span class="alt">This new life that happened in the womb of Mary still happens through the Spirit</span> in the expectant hearts of those who believe that Mary's first child was also God's Son!</p><h4>Today's Prayer</h4><p>Father, our hearts resonate with a truth that our minds can't grasp: <span class="alt">The virgin</span> Mary carried <span class="alt">your Son</span> in her womb! And the miracle in Mary is a reminder that you have given us new birth into a living hope through the power of the blessed Holy Spirit who not only provided the miracle of Jesus' birth but also raised him from the dead. David said it well in Psalm 23, <span class="alt"><i>"my cup overflows."</i></span> Because of the Spirit's presence, our hope overflows! In addition to goodness, peace, and joy (Romans 14:17 NLT), the presence of the Holy Spirit brings deep, abiding, and personal hope! But let's not get overly focused on <span class="alt">just</span> the promise to us of the Holy Spirit's presence. Instead, let's <span class="alt">also</span> notice that this passage contains a blessing that we can share with other believers &#8212; releasing God's blessing of the Spirit into their lives. This blessing of the Spirit can bring them joy, peace, and hope! What a great gift to share with others who love Jesus.</p><h4>Today's Prayer</h4><p>Father, I thank you for your presence in my life. Your presence has brought me hope, joy, and peace and encourages me to live a good life. Please use me to bless others so that they can experience these blessings from your Spirit. Open my eyes to those who need this blessing of the Spirit. Give me the gracious words to share this blessing with others at just the right moment when they need to hear them. These three virtues are not obtained just by human effort. Yes, a passion to possess these godly qualities is necessary, but the source of these qualities is the Holy Spirit alive in us. Goodness, peace, and joy have their source in God's nature and are made real in us through the work of the Holy Spirit. As we invite the Holy Spirit to reign over our inner being, our character is transformed to be more and more like Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:17-18). So let's yearn for the Holy Spirit to transform us to be ever more like Christ and trust that the Spirit's influence will be displayed in our lives through goodness, peace, and joy.</p><h4>Today's Prayer</h4><p>Father, don't let me be distracted by, or addicted to, food or drink. I want to be sustained and fed spiritually and emotionally by the presence of your Holy Spirit within me. Hyperbole is an overstatement meant <span class="alt">to get other people's attention. The words of hyperbole can even be jarring to help others understand the emotions behind the words spoken.</span> Paul is about to make an incredibly shocking statement about being willing to be cut off from Christ if it would mean that his own people, the Jews, would know Jesus as their Messiah and LORD (Romans 9:1-5). But, Paul has done his own spiritual inventory: <span class="alt">What</span> he says is NOT hyperbole or exaggeration. He means it with all of his heart, and the Holy Spirit confirms it. As <i>The Message</i> puts it, <span class="alt"><i>"I'm not exaggerating &#8212; Christ and the Holy Spirit are my witnesses."</i></span> Since the Holy Spirit lives within us and works with our <span class="alt">consciences</span> to convict us of sin, <span class="alt">to help</span> us discern God's truth when it is proclaimed, and <span class="alt">to confirm</span> God's truth within us, Paul can speak with assurance that what he says is the truth. We might stretch the truth to each other, but we cannot lie to the Spirit who lives within us.</p><h4>Today's Prayer</h4><p>Heavenly Father, I want to speak the truth in love. I know that I need the convicting, comforting, and confirming Holy Spirit to be at work in my heart so that my words are true and redemptive. I ask for this grace in Jesus' name.
