An additional 18 percent live in exurbia and also commute by car. People that live relatively close to city centers and ride in by public transit are another 13 percent. Still, even they rely on cars in their home communities.</p><p>“Any realistic route to a sustainable urban future needs to harness this combined population, a racially and economically diverse 92 percent of U.S. ‘metropolitan’ residents, and their automobile-based mind-set. It’s these suburbanites in their much-dissed ‘bedroom’ communities and anything-but-iconic houses that can create the radical changes we need.”</p><p>Berger and Gordon are high on Electric Vehicles. I’m not, as I suspect most Instapundit readers aren’t. Much as the Balfour ministry faced strategic strain from the distant Boer War—as well as expanding domestic social instability and the rise of Germany—the United States is dealing with the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, domestic civil unrest, and a rising China. Additionally, the White House Office of Management and Budget has attempted to impose on the Defense Department similar fiscal strictures to those that Balfour levied on Fisher’s Admiralty: flat to declining budgets and demands to be more efficient. As a result, the Pentagon has made the decision to cut back on its shipbuilding plans, starting construction of only eight new ships in the next year, half of them auxiliaries, while accelerating the decommissioning of seven cruisers, dropping the fleet to an estimated 294 ships. Congress has indicated that it will seek to expand these numbers, but the future is increasingly murky.</p><p>The U.S. naval strategy will produce a fleet too small to protect the United States’ global interests or win its wars.</p><p>Given that even the most capable ship can only be in one place at a time and that the world’s oceans are vast, the fleet as planned will not meet the demand for a naval presence detailed by the various four-star regional combatant commanders around the world. On average, their requests equate to approximately 130 ships at sea on any given day, nearly half of the present fleet. His <em>volte face</em> is therefore surprising. Is he now endorsing Frexit? <em>Sacre bleu</em>, M. Unemployment was also low, and minorities had never fared better in the job market. The southern border was relatively secure, the useless war in Afghanistan was bumping along, enriching the Pentagon but not troubling anybody overmuch, and the future looked bright.</p><p>Then came the highly questionable election of 2020, one rendered nearly meaningless by last-minute, COVID-driven, illegal changes in state election laws that made a mockery of our democratic traditions and procedures in the name of a chimerical “safety” from a form of the flu. And presto—Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr., who’d been in Washington for more than half a century, was suddenly president of the United States.</p><p>Today, the economy is in chaos, supply chains have been disrupted, inflation is soaring, race relations are poisonous, crime including murder is way up, the energy business is assaulted on all fronts even as the industrialized nations face the prospect of a winter without reliable power, and China is rattling its plastic sabers.</p><p>And yet the befuddled Biden’s principal concern is forcing a thoroughly anti-American, unconstitutional series of vaccination “mandates” on the American work force that has—thankfully—finally brought the country to its boiling point.</p><p>Let’s go, Brandon!</p><p>In Florida, Southwest Airlines has had to cancel hundreds of flights, ostensibly because of the weather (in mild October?) but more than likely because its pilots are staging a sickout in defiance of their company’s buckling to administration pressure. The pilot’s union has already gone to court to block the mandate, which applies to private companies doing business with the feds, and there have also been reports of a slowdown by FAA air-traffic controllers in Jacksonville as well.</p><p>Biden’s misbegotten mandate also applies to American troops, who must be inoculated against the Chinese-manufactured, Fauci-funded virus in stages over the next month or so—but so far hundreds of thousands of servicemen, including members of elite units, have refused.</p><p>Meanwhile, states like New York are firing hospital workers who decline to submit to replacement governor Kathy Hochul’s September vaccination order, further disrupting an already overstressed medical system.</p><p>Other resistance has developed among Amtrak workers, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which will refuse to enforce the mandate, and even some NBA stars. Since his new series, Superman: Son of Kal-El, began in July, Jon has combated wildfires caused by climate change, thwarted a high school shooting and protested the deportation of refugees in Metropolis.</p></blockquote><p>—The <em>New York Times,</em> today.</p><p>To be fair though, Superman’s been out of the closet for quite some time:</p><blockquote><p>Warners has a lot at stake with its long-delayed attempt to breathe life into the “Superman” franchise. The studio’s schedule is dominated by pricey sequels, prequels and remakes, but its first such effort this summer, “Poseidon,” sank faster than the boat. And “Superman Returns,” which will cost about $300 million to release with marketing costs added in, faces formidable competition from the latest installment in the blockbuster franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” which opens nine days after “Superman” lands in theaters.</p><p>Beyond the <em>Advocate</em> cover, which features the film’s star, Brandon Routh, in costume, industry blogs such as the <em>Defamer</em> Web site, which has become the online show business bible for many young industry executives, have been as obsessed with “Superman’s” gay appeal as Britney Spears’ parenting skills and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s new baby girl.</p><p>Defamer has posted a number of stories on how gay the “Superman Returns” posters and Topps trading cards make the character look, particularly in one trading card showing Superman literally coming out of a closet. “If Warner Bros. marketing partners like Topps aren’t even going to bother pretending, why should we?” <em>Defamer</em> asked. “Be proud, our fabulously caped little Queer-El.”</p><p>Warner Bros. declined to comment. But the studio is reaching out to some gay moviegoers.
