19.
After a slow start to the season, Alpine is finally on the board

MIAMI — Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce might want to check on their Formula 1 team more often.

 20.
A slow start to the 2024 Formula 1 season finally saw Alpine break through Sunday in the Miami Grand Prix. After weeks of development, close calls, and steps forward, a tenth-place finish from Esteban Ocon saw the team earn their first point of the season. The result pulls them out of the bottom of the F1 Constructors’ Standings, and into eighth place, ahead of Sauber and Williams.

 21.
On the other side of the garage Pierre Gasly finished 12th, his best result of the season.

 22.
All week long here in Miami both Ocon, Gasly, and Alpine reserve driver Jack Doohan talked about the steps forward the team was making with the A524. Both drivers advanced to Q2 during Saturday evening’s qualifying session, and with Ocon starting the race in P12 and Ocon in P13, it was the team’s best starting position of the entire season.

 23.
“I think we can be pleased,” said Gasly following qualifying to the media, including SB Nation. “And it just shows we are heading in the right direction.”

 24.
Then came Sunday’s drive from Ocon, which saw the Alpine driver fend off Nico Hülkenberg for the final points position. Although speaking with the media following the race, Ocon admitted that had the Miami Grand Prix been a few laps longer, the story might have been different.

 25.
“I think today, you know, if you ten more laps probably, Nico would have been very close in fighting with us again,” said Ocon to the media, including SB Nation, after the Miami Grand Prix. “I had to fight my way through in that race. It was insane how many moves I had to do.”

 26.
Ocon also put the team’s journey to this point in perspective.

 27.
“We don’t want to be jumping around and celebrating too hard. Obviously, it’s only a top ten,” described Ocon. “But considering where you know we were, a couple of races ago in Bahrain, 19th and 20th. I think, you know, we can take the positive out of this race and, baby steps that we are doing at the moment.

 28.
“And that obviously feels good because, the team kept motivated, kept trying to understand what is going on with our pace. And it hasn’t been the smoothest weekend, I would say, but you know, it’s two races that we come close to the points. 11 in Shanghai, tenth today,” continued Ocon. “We are inside the points and yeah, it feels good to come out of this weekend with some reward.”

 29.
For his part Team Principal Bruno Famin hailed a “faultless” performance from the entire organization.

 30.
“It’s our first point of the season today, so from a sporting perspective, that is satisfying for us. We had a clear plan where one car would try to pit early and undercut the cars around us while the other car would take a gamble by running a longer first stint in hope of a [Virtual Safety Car], [Safety Car], or red flag scenario,” said Famin. “On this occasion this is how it unfolded and it was Esteban who scored the point in tenth place.

 31.
“It was a faultless race from everyone in the team – strategy, race management, pit-stops - and we did enough to put ourselves in a position for the team to benefit. It’s been a much more positive weekend here in Miami and we must keep striving for more if we are to keep fighting for higher positions. The hard work will continue as we eye up returning to Europe next time out.”

 32.
Not to be outdone is the flawless weekend from Abbi Pulling, the team’s F1 Academy driver. Pulling dominated the field this weekend, starting — and winning — both races in wire-to-wire fashion. Pulling extended her F1 Academy Championship lead to 34 points over Mercedes driver Dorine Pin.

 33.
In all, a tremendous weekend for Alpine, and perhaps some reasons for Mahomes and Kelce to come around more often.

 53.
 54.
Mickelson once again was not afraid to voice his opinion on social media, this time sending a warning.

A lot has been made recently of players on LIV Golf being unable to earn Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points.

 55.
Most fans and professional golfers agree that the OWGR is out of whack.

 56.
Jon Rahm is currently ranked fifth. Brooks Koepka and Cam Smith are the only other players on LIV ranked inside the top 80, with Koepka 36th and Smith 55th.

 57.
Anyone that knows anything professional golf understands that Koepka, Smith, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Joaquin Niemann and likely others are far better than their ranking.

 58.
But with the OWGR’s decision to deny points to LIV, players have plummeted. That, in turn, will lead to many potential deserving players not qualifying for major championships.

 59.
Talor Gooch is one of them. Gooch has been very vocal about his distaste for the status quo, even though he also admitted he was not even attempting to qualify for the U.S. Open.

 60.
The X account, Flushing It, posted Sunday the hypocrisy of the Volvo China Open awarding OWGR points while LIV is left in the dark.

 61.

 62.

 64.

 65.
 66.
 67.

 68.
“Never has there been a more obvious example of the immediate issue LIV faces than today. The Volvo China Open was played for a $2.25 million purse and several players qualified for the PGA Championship at Valhalla. LIV Golf Singapore played for a purse more than 10 times that amount, with a bunch of the best players of this generation, but zero of them qualified for the PGA Championship from the event,” Flushing It wrote.

 69.
Phil Mickelson, one of the staunchest and loudest proponents of LIV Golf, then replied.

 70.
“What if NONE of the LIV players played? Would they be missed? What about next year, or the year after? At some point they will care and will have to answer to sponsors and television. FAAFO,” Mickelson responded.

 71.
The FAAFO of course stands for “F*** around and find out.”

 72.
Rumors surfaced that some LIV players contemplating jumping ship if the OWGR problem does not get resolved.

 73.
At the end of the day, most golfers’ goals are to win majors. You cannot win them if you cannot play in them.

 74.
The OWGR does not seem to have any inkling toward budging on this issue. Nor has there been any reported movement toward a deal between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Public Investment Fund, LIV’s beneficiaries.

 75.
So, Mickelson might just get his wish. We will all find out.

 96.
 97.
Former teammates and current rivals hail Lando Norris as he secures his first F1 win

MIAMI — Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium was one of those rare days in any sport, not just Formula 1.

 98.
A day where the vanquished praised the victor, and with good reason.

 99.
Lando Norris finally reached the top podium step, securing his inaugural F1 victory with a well-executed performance in the Miami Grand Prix. But as his rivals, some of whom were once teammates of his, spoke with the media following the race there was nothing but joy and happiness for the McLaren driver.

 100.
“I’m genuinely very happy for the kid,” said Daniel Ricciardo to the media, including SB Nation, following the Miami Grand Prix.

 101.
Ricciardo was teammates with Norris for two seasons at McLaren.

 102.
“You know, as a teammate, obviously you get to know them a little bit better. And obviously, I got to know Lando well and you have, like, a bit of a closer connection. So, obviously, we spent some time away from the track together. He actually came out to my farm in Australia this January. I’ve got to spend some time with him,” continued Ricciardo.

 103.
“I like the kid. You know, I think a lot of us felt it was a matter of time until he was able to have a day like this,” added Ricciardo. “But nothing’s guaranteed in the sport, you know, so happy that he did get to have a day like this, one that will forever be one of the greatest days of his life.”

 104.
Carlos Sainz Jr., another former teammate of Norris, also praised the McLaren driver when speaking with the media.

 105.
“I’m obviously happy for him,” started Sainz when speaking with the media, including SB Nation.

 106.
“I think we do know drivers we know who deserve to win races and who is driving at the level to win races. And we all know Lando has been driving to win races, and when he gets by anyone, we’re all happy for him,” added the Ferrari driver.

 107.
Praise also came in from seven-time Drivers’ Champion Lewis Hamilton.

 108.
“I know Lando quite well, and got a decent relationship, and I know what it’s like to have your first Grand Prix and get that first Grand Prix win, how special it is. And so I could be happy for him,” said Hamilton to the media. “I really hope that he’s able to appreciate the moment and enjoy.

 109.
“Because it’s a big one.”

 110.
Even the driver Norris held off, Max Verstappen, sang the McLaren driver’s praises.

 111.
“I’m very happy for Lando, it’s been a long time coming and it’s not going to be his last one, so he definitely deserves it today,” said Verstappen following the Miami Grand Prix.

 130.
 131.
After years of searching for his first F1 win, Lando Norris finally has it

MIAMI — His week began with questions about the cut on his nose.

 132.
It ended with him celebrating on the top step of the podium.

 133.
After years of searching for it, Lando Norris finally enjoyed his day in the sun here in the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, breaking through with the first victory of his F1 career.

 134.
McLaren brought a host of upgrades to Miami this week, and those upgrades showed promise in the first two Sprint Qualifying sessions when Norris was on the medium compound. Norris topped the timing sheets in both SQ1 and SQ2, but struggled in the third session on the softs, slipping down the order and qualifying in P9.

 135.
His F1 Sprint Race ended on the first turn Saturday, as he was washed out in a four-car incident that left his MCL38 with terminal damage.

 136.
McLaren was able to get his car ready for qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix later in the day, and Norris again showed decent pace, finishing that session in P5. But with Max Verstappen starting on pole position, it looked as if this Miami Grand Prix would end up like so many other races the past three-plus seasons, with the rest of the grid chasing down Verstappen in vain.

 137.
But that changed on Sunday.

 138.
Norris was running in sixth through the early stages of the Miami Grand Prix, but as the laps ticked on, he continued to show tremendous pace. He posted what to that point was the fastest lap of the race on Lap 19, and was running near the front around the mid-way point of the race.

 139.
That’s when Norris, who still needed to make his mandatory pit stop and tire switch, got the break he needed.

 140.
A collision between Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant spun the Williams driver into the barrier, eventually bringing out the safety car. That enabled Norris to pit under ideal conditions, and he came out on a set of hards in front of Verstappen. But with the Red Bull driver lurking, Norris needed to stick the restart and pull away from DRS range as quickly as possible to see the day through.

 141.
He did just that.

 142.
Over the closing stages of the Miami Grand Prix Norris slowly built a lead, maintaining it into the final laps. As he was pulling away, Verstappen made it clear that he was not going to be able to chase down the McLaren in front of him. “I can’t get the car to turn,” lamented Verstappen to his team in the pits. “It’s a disaster.”

 143.
It was anything but a disaster for the McLaren driver, who finally got to reach the top step for the first time in his F1 career.

 144.
“About time!” exclaimed Norris after the race trackside to Jenson Button. “What a race. It’s been a long time coming, but finally I’ve managed to do it. I’m so happy for my whole team, I finally delivered for them. A long day, tough race, but finally on top so I’m over the moon.

 145.
“The whole weekend’s been good, I’ve just had some little setbacks along the way,” continued Norris. “I knew on Friday we had the pace, just a couple of mistakes here and there, but today we managed to put it together. We put the perfect strategy [together], it all paid off. Thanks to McLaren, everyone, and have to give a shout out to my mum and dad of course.”

 146.
Norris was also asked about his team, who gave him his chance in racing. He did not hold back his gratitude.

 147.
“What do I say to them? I’m just proud really,” Norris responded. “A lot of people doubted me along the way. I’ve made a lot of mistakes over my last five years, my short career, but today we put it all together so this is all for the team.

 148.
“I stuck with McLaren because I could believe in them and I did believe in them. Today proved exactly that.”

 167.
 168.
Pendrith can finally call himself a PGA Tour winner as the Canadian secured his first victory at the CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

Four straight rounds in the 60’s helped Taylor Pendrith win his first PGA Tour victory at the CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

 169.
Pendrith fired off a 4-under 67 to beat Ben Kohles by one shot Sunday.

 170.
It was quite the dramatic finish, too.

 171.
Kohles carried all of the momentum coming into the final hole. He made birdie on 16 and 17 to go from one back to lead by a shot.

 172.
It appeared as though Pendrith was going to let his 54-hole lead slip away for the third time in his professional career, handing Kohles the maiden victory.

 173.
Then the par-5 18th played out.

 174.
Kohles chunked his third shot from the rough just off the green, failing to reach the putting surface.

 175.

 180.
 181.

 182.
It sadly left some fans calling it a massive choke job.

 183.
Meanwhile, Pendrith hit two great shots, setting up a lengthy eagle putt. Despite missing the eagle-3, he left himself with four feet for birdie and 23-under par.

 184.
Kohles hit a great second chip, but inexplicably missed his three-foot par putt. It was gut-wrenching to watch.

 185.
Pendrith then calmly drained his birdie for his first ever win on the PGA Tour in 74 tries.

 186.
“It’s crazy,” Pendrith told Amanda Balionis of CBS Sports. “Ben played great today and birdied 16 and 17. I didn’t hit my best iron shots down the stretch, but a good two-putt on the last was — I feel for Ben making bogey; he played so well today. I’m super thrilled. It’s amazing. I’m shaking.”

 187.

 188.

 192.
 193.

 194.
The Canadian had a rough season entering the week. He had recorded just two Top 10’s and four Top 25’s with six missed cuts, including five in his last eight starts.

 195.
Yet, Pendrith fired off the low round of the day Saturday with an 8-under 63. That elevated him atop the leaderboard heading into the final round of play.

 196.
He started with a birdie on the first and added another at the par-4 6th. The 32-year-old dropped a shot on 8 but birdied the 9th to turn in 34 strokes.

 197.
Pendrith kept it clean on the back nine, adding a birdie at the 12th before he made five straight pars until the final hole.

 198.

 199.

 200.
Winning with family ❤️

A moment @TaylorPendrith will never forget. pic.twitter.com/1SPC6Stn3T
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 5, 2024

 203.
 204.

 205.
However, it was his par saves on 16 and 17 that proved to be crucial. He sank a couple of very tricky par putts that could very easily have ended his chances.

 206.
“I had a jumper on 16, and that first putt – I thought if I played it too high, it wouldn’t come back, so that was a huge save,” Pendrith said. “On 17, I hit a really good shot, and it spun off the front. I had an awkward stance, but I curled in that putt the last second there, which was unreal, to give me a chance. Obviously, a really good birdie on the last for me.”

 207.
With this victory, Pendrith moved all the way up to 34th in the FedEx Cup standings. He also earned his way into the remaining 2024 Signature Events, starting with next week’s Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hallow.

 228.
Woods’ brand, Sun Day Red, launched its second line of the month and the iconic red polo was one of a number of items to fly off the shelves.

Tiger Woods’ clothing brand, Sun Day Red, launched its second line on Sunday, May 5, finally including the red items.

 229.
Not surprisingly, they flew off the shelves.

 230.
Woods and Sun Day Red had teased ‘All Things Red’ leading up to Sunday’s launch. Within a few hours of going on sale, various items in the collection have already sold out.

 231.
After the initial collection, ‘The Hunt,’ was released Tuesday, fans complained about the lack of red items. However, it did not take long to give the people what they wanted.

 232.
Four color ways of the Delta PQ Polo exist, and only black smalls remain.

 252.
The red polo is arguably the most iconic piece of golf clothing since Tiger came onto the scene.

 253.
He has won 15 majors and 82 PGA Tour tournaments wearing some version of red.

 254.
The significance of his red polo stems back to his mother. Woods went on the Today Show to discuss Sun Day Red and explained why it is his color.

 255.
“My mom thought that being born a Capricorn that, red was my power color,” Woods said. “In some of the junior golf events in So Cal, I would wear red, and I won. Then, in spite, I wore blue at other tournaments — I didn’t win. So I then switched to red, and I had a lot more success wearing red.”

 256.
This launch also included the first versions of the Sun Day Red mock neck polos, ‘Fermi Mock’ and ‘3D Knit Mock.’ The hats were also available in red and black.

 257.
All of the hats launched in the red collection are sold out as well. The Cypress Tour Towel is also gone. The limited edition ball markers in red, silver, and black are no longer available.

 258.
Sun Day Red’s final collection on the website, ‘The Brave,’ still has no release date.

 259.
It appears Tiger will be at Valhalla Golf Club for the PGA Championship, as the Sun Day Red website listed his outfits for the week. Woods was also granted a special exemption into the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst by the USGA in May.

 280.
Scheffler will not play at the Wells Fargo Championship, but is still preparing for the PGA Championship his own way.

Scottie Scheffler will not be in the field for next week’s Wells Fargo Championship as he is still waiting on his wife Meredith to deliver their first child.

 281.
However, the World No. 1 golfer still found ways to get on the golf course to keep his game sharp.

 282.
News surfaced that he played with former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo on Thursday at Maridoe Golf Course in Carrollton, Texas, per Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine.

 283.
“Per a member at the club, Scheffler played with Tony Romo, used a push cart and shot 67 in wet conditions,” Romine wrote.

 290.

 291.
Romo may not be a PGA Tour-level competitor, but he is no slouch on the golf course either.

 292.
The CBS Sports football analyst is a talented golfer who has appeared in several PGA Tour events with a sponsor exemption. He has also won the American Century Championship three times in 2018, 2019 and most recently, 2022.

 293.
Meredith’s due date is approaching, leaving the Scheffler’s on high alert even before he won The Masters for the second time in three years.

 294.
Scheffler was willing to withdraw from The Masters had Meredith gone into labor. It is only logical to assume that will be the same at the PGA Championship in a couple of weeks.

 295.
That is, however, if he is even in the field.

 296.
He has not commented publicly on whether he will compete in the second major of the year. The timing of their child’s birth will likely determine how much of a chance the rest of the field has knowing how hot Scheffler has been.

 316.
 317.
Koepka finally found his form at LIV Golf Singapore just in time as the reigning PGA Championship winner will look to repeat.

Brooks Koepka got hot in Singapore as the reigning PGA Championship winner took home his fourth LIV Golf title.

 318.
After Koepka fired off a 7-under 64 on Day 2, he followed it up with a final round 3-under 68 Sunday. He finished at 15-under to win by two shots over Cam Smith and Marc Leishman.

 319.
“I felt the heat, but it was mainly because of how hot it was,” Koepka said. “Played very consistent, missed it in the right spots. When you’re playing with a lead, you do that. You don’t have to force anything.”

 320.
During the final round, he made four birdies and a bogey and had to keep the Aussies off his heels.

 321.
This was also the first time he won in front of his son, Crew.

 328.

 329.
This week saw a resurgence in the former Florida State Seminole.

 330.
He has not played as well this year on the LIV Golf Tour, with just two Top 10’s before this win.

 331.
Koepka finished 28th and 46th in Hong Kong and Miami, respectively. Things started trending in the right direction in Adelaide when Koepka finished solo 10th.

 332.
Koepka alluded to his performance in Augusta as reason for motivation.

 333.
“I feel good. I feel a lot better than I did last week. It was rounding the corner for me,” Koepka said. “Like I said earlier, I think in one of the press conferences, I felt the results weren’t there. It was improving but the results weren’t there. It’s nice to see some results and the hard work paying off.”

 334.
The two-time U.S. Open winner explained how playing in the wind got his ball moving in the wrong direction, and he had fallen into bad habits.

 335.
However, things appear to have clicked for Koepka as he seems to be peaking at the right moment.

 336.
“Winning always helps, but I still have the same expectations every time I go tee it up, and that’s to win,” Koepka said. “Those are my expectations, what I want to do. One result doesn’t mean anything really in the scheme of things. For two weeks, a lot can change.”

 337.
Koepka has two weeks until the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. He will look to win his sixth major and his fourth PGA.
