24.

 25.
Over the past 18 months, Northwestern football has changed nearly everything about itself – turnover at ten coaching positions, a completely new style of offense, and a demolished stadium – except for its roster. Aside from a small handful of departures and one notable item on their portal wishlist, the Wildcats are old dogs learning new tricks in 2024.

 26.

 27.
Prior to his firing in July of 2023 amid the Northwestern hazing scandal, longtime head coach Pat Fitzgerald had already begun to change over his staff after going 4-20 (2-16) in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. In the Winter after the 2022 season, Northwestern’s RB and CB coaches had been hired away, and Fitzgerald replaced the DC as well as the WR and DL coaches for 2023, though he’d left in place the OC plus the TE, OL, LB, and DB coaches from his previous staff. New DC Braun was appointed interim head coach after Fitzgerald was fired, while still serving as DC for 2023.

 28.

 29.
Braun made no further moves at that time, since the opener was only a month and a half away. But after an unexpected 8-5 season (in my opinion, Braun’s new energy deserves a lot of credit but on the podcast David and I agreed that much of it had to do with some good fortune, the schedule, and natural growth in the defensive line that probably would have happened regardless), Braun was given the head coaching position permanently and this offseason he finished the staff turnover started last offseason. He kept all the new staff who came in with him as part of the 2023 wave – RB coach Foster, WR coach Binns, DT coach Smith, and CB coach Hicks – and replaced all but one of the Fitzgerald holdovers with new hires of his own. Those are OC and QB coach Lujan, TE coach Creighton, OL coach O’Boyle, and DB coach Barnett, with the one retention being LB coach McGarigle who also got a promotion to DC while Braun acts as head coach only in 2024.

 39.

 40.
Northwestern has been stuck in neutral for all three years I’ve charted them, with a long string of poor quarterback play and a pro-style scheme that their talent level and offensive line development can’t support. Even if Fitzgerald hadn’t been fired for the reasons he was, I should think that his fidelity to an obvious strategic mismatch between what former OC Bajakian wanted to do and what Northwestern’s recruiting constraints allow them to do, in addition to the constant failure to get any acceptable level of play out of several talented QBs, would have warranted the change. On the podcast, David seemed to think my description of these inadequacies was too restrained and had more choice language.

 41.

 42.
New OC Lujan is an interesting hire. He was the coordinator for the back-to-back FCS national champion South Dakota State teams the past two seasons, with a very different and much more wide open offense, though one that also used multiple tight ends and relied on a strong defense and ball control. Northwestern didn’t have a Spring game for me to watch but they had an open practice that David attended, and he seemed delighted with the changes. I’ve watched the Jackrabbits quite a bit for some other projects and I wouldn’t characterize it as a highly prolific offense – they ranked a mediocre 50th in the FCS in 2022 before moving up to 6th in 2023, not making any of the FCS advanced stats metrics’ top ten lists either year – however they have been an extremely efficient offense under Lujan, with the best passer rating and the best red zone offense in the FCS both years.

 43.

 44.
The most significant open question for the Wildcats is at quarterback. At the time we scheduled the podcast with David, the backup QB who played extensively the past two seasons, Brendan Sullivan, had not yet transferred out, and we arranged for Northwestern to be this early in the series on the assumption that it was a highly stable roster with known – if not great – starters and backups at all key positions like QB. So his departure when appearing to have the job in hand came as quite a surprise.

 45.

 46.
After talking with David on the podcast, and recounting the full and very long history of seven different severely subpar QBs over the last three seasons (two of whom, wildcat specialist #12 QB Lausch and South Carolina transfer #3 QB R. Hilinski, are amazingly still on the roster), we’re both convinced that Northwestern’s staff has already identified the transfer QB they want to lead the offense in 2024. It’s likely that they’re simply waiting for some academic schedule matters to clear up first but have told Sullivan about the new presumptive starter, causing Sullivan to leave immediately while the Spring transfer window was still open.

 47.

 48.
David told us that the two most likely candidates for the job are high 3-star Mike Wright from Mississippi State, who initially chose Vanderbilt over Northwestern in 2020 and has several SEC starts, and Mark Gronowski, a Chicagoland native who started at South Dakota State the last three seasons with a 37-3 record - he hadn’t entered the portal at the time we recorded but David thought a big NIL push might do it. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in Fall camp, but it’s obvious from the history to date that the staff doesn’t want Lausch, Hilinski, or either the developmental freshmen to be the starter and will find someone in the portal by opening day.

 49.

 50.

 51.

 52.

 53.
Last year there was a three-man rotation at running back: longtime starter #4 RB Porter got about two-thirds of carries, with #20 RB Himon and Anthony Tyus splitting the remaining third, and then #25 RB Komolafe redshirted but got a handful here and there. Porter and Tyus are both bigger backs and were favored in Bajakian’s constant (and ineffective) A-gap runs; on my tally sheet Tyus graded significantly higher on per-play success rate and adjusted YPC because he was more likely to improvise and find a better gap than the designed play, but he transferred out after the season.

 54.

 55.
Porter returns and David thinks he’ll still have the majority of carries, but also thinks that the smaller, speedier Himon is set for a starring role in Lujan’s offense. I could see that happening in terms of RPOs and other passes out of the backfield (Himon was far more valuable as a pass-catcher even in the old offense last year and was actually the least effective runner as I measure backs), but my opinion differs from David’s here; I think accessing Himon’s superior open-field speed advantages would require significant offensive line and tight end blocking improvement and there’s no offensive scheme in which those things are optional.

 56.

 57.

 58.

 59.
The tight end room has carried at least eight guys on scholarship each year I’ve studied Northwestern, and they still will in 2024 as they only lose third-stringer Charlie Mangieri while taking a prep recruit who arrives in the Fall. The top two are returners #87 TE Gordon and #88 TE Lang, who’d share four or five targets per game but appeared on nearly every play as blockers.

 60.

 61.
That was one of the most significant problems with Northwestern’s offense – the opportunity cost of more dynamic skill athletes on the field wasn’t worth it given their awful blocking performance. On the podcast, David was quick to agree with my observation from charting the entire Big Ten that these are the poorest graded blocking tight ends in the conference, and took the opportunity to relay a few stories of particularly egregious instances of bad TE blocking costing the team wins.

 62.

 63.
I think this room could use an immediate overhaul, and at a school with a freer hand at roster management that would probably have been done by now. But with Northwestern’s constraints (I compared them to Stanford’s and David thought that was apposite) I think they’ll let that be done “naturally”, so to speak, as almost all of this room are seniors and grad students whom I believe are on their final year of eligibility. In the future I suspect the Wildcats will proceed with a smaller, quality-over-quantity approach to this unit but David and I both think that’s going to have to wait until after the current players depart on their own.

 64.

 65.

 66.

 67.
In 2023 there was a three-receiver rotation, with virtually no playing time for anyone else in the room. Those were #17 WR Kirtz on the outside and #8 WR Henning in the slot, who return, and Cam Johnson, who just signed as a UDFA with the Cowboys.

 68.

 69.
We don’t have much of a clue about anyone else, since in previous years the targets were dominated by either single-year transfers – Stephan Robinson for 2021 and Donny Navarro for 2022 – or receivers who took their final year in 2023 elsewhere, Genson Hooper Price to Coastal Carolina and Malik Washington to Virginia (he was just drafted by the Dolphins, as David predicted). Kirtz is the only receiver to play consistently the over the previous few seasons; I haven’t seen anyone else besides Henning on the field (and half of Henning’s tape is from his previous school, Michigan).

 70.

 71.
The upside for the Wildcats is that Kirtz and Henning showed a lot of talent on tape, are quite experienced going into their fifth year of meaningful play each, and have plenty of room to be more extensively utilized in the new scheme as David and I discussed at length on the podcast. The mystery, and potential downside, is that there’s no way to tell if the seven other scholarship receivers are any good – there’s no tape at all on them and Bajakian’s offense was so receiver-unfriendly that no fair inferences can be made from their lack of playing time. Even in the Spring open practice David watched the QB play was so poor that he relayed to me on the podcast all the passes went to just Kirtz and Henning, without giving any other receiver a chance to show their stuff as a competent QB would have.

 72.

 73.
The room is all over the map, with talent ranging from low 4-star #19 WR Fleurima to low 3-star #11 WR Gray, sizes from 6’4” #10 WR Ahumaraeze to 5’10” WR Cal. Johnson, and ages from seniors to a couple true freshmen one of whom isn’t on campus yet. David demurred when I asked for a prediction on who’s likely to step up, and I understand why – there’s nothing solid to go on. With this many scholarship players in the room the odds of completely striking out on a third and fourth decent receiver to add to Kirtz and Henning for the new scheme are pretty unlikely so I think they’ll eventually identify a couple of playable guys here, but like the QB we’re just going to have to wait and see what the names are.

 74.

 75.

 76.

 77.
The offensive line returns three senior starters and a couple of experienced backups, but as David put it on the podcast, “This group was a mess.” The original starting right tackle, Zachary Franks, was benched at halftime of week 2 against UTEP for complete ineffectiveness and has since transferred out. He was replaced by #56 RT Thompson who played better but was an inexperienced upperclassman for a reason. #72 LT Tiernan, who was the starter for half the season in 2022 as well, had worse pass-blocking grades than Thompson.

 78.

 79.
#71 C Wrather had become the starter as a true freshman at the tail end of the 2021 season but had the lowest run-blocking grades on my tally sheet in 2023 despite his experience, and was benched experimentally in week 8 against Nebraska for the backup, #65 C Carsello who had enrolled in the same cycle but never started before, and that went even worse so Wrather was back in for week 9 and the rest of the season. Among the returners, the only bright spot was then-true freshman #75 LG Knox, who played during the bowl game due to an opt-out and looked pretty good against Utah, but I take that with a grain of salt because of the Utes’ late season defensive depletion and because Knox got hurt partway through the game so I have very limited film on him.

 80.

 81.
Besides Franks, the starting left guard from the last four seasons and the guy who graded out the best, Josh Priebe, also transferred out, as did freshman Alex Doost who was redshirting. Starting right guard in 2023 Dom D’Antonio has given up his final year of eligibility to take a job coaching in Italy.

 82.

 83.
There are only three other returners on scholarship, none of whom got any meaningful play: #64 OL Birsa, #74 OL Herzog, and #73 OL McGuire. Despite being the youngest of those three as a redshirt freshman and presently listed at just 290 lbs, David said Birsa is the most likely of them to make the lineup, because he personally watched Herzog and McGuire “try to block” in the open practice and he’s not sanguine those two will be ready to play any time soon.

 84.

 85.
Northwestern has taken three prep recruits, all low-to-mid 3-stars and not real candidates for immediate play, and two transfers so far: Matt Keeler who was a backup at Texas Tech and Jack Bailey who started at Colorado and also played for O’Boyle at their previous stop, Kent State. By chance, I’ve charted both of them before, including Bailey at Kent State in 2022 when they did quite well against Georgia’s defensive line.

 86.

 87.
As we discussed on the podcast, Northwestern will almost certainly take a few more offensive linemen from the portal, since there just aren’t enough bodies here at 13 with three being true freshman. I think Keeler counts as one of those bodies, his film and experience don’t indicate a Power conference starter, but I have Bailey penciled in as taking one of the open guard spots given that he’s now followed O’Boyle to a third school. I think the three returning starters will keep their jobs and Knox will get the one he auditioned for because there’s no serious challenge for any of them in this room and no portal lineman in Northwestern’s price range would constitute one either.

 88.

 89.
For the long term, I think O’Boyle was a good hire if he’s left alone to develop this unit and given enough resources to work, his year at Colorado in 2023 notwithstanding – nobody could have made that hodge-podge work. But for the short term they’re locked into basically the same guys who couldn’t block last year and in my experience the only thing that really changes o-line performance as radically as Northwestern needs is cycling the old guys out and patiently developing a crop of good prospects, and that’s not something that happens over an offseason.

 90.

 91.

 92.
Defense

 93.

 94.

 95.
 96.

 97.

 98.
The steady growth of Northwestern’s defense over the last three seasons has been clear across all six of the metrics I track from charting, with incremental improvements across the board and one category showing massive growth which is efficiency rush defense. The Wildcats were still slightly underwater against the run last year so there’s room for improvement, particularly on 3rd & short and 2nd & medium, but they’re now above water on 1st & 10 and better than most teams with a 47% success rate on 2nd & short. And they’ve remained a strong pass defense all three seasons, especially on 3rd & long which they’ve consistently defended over 75% which is an elite number.

 99.

 100.
In my opinion, the key to this growth has been a very low rate of roster turnover since 2021, with just about everybody from the 2022 two-deep returning in 2023 and most of last year’s starters getting substantial playing time beginning in 2021 or earlier. And the group where the biggest developmental growth has happened is the defensive line, which had nine players who’d been together since at least 2021 as part of the primary rotation of whom four were former walk-ons and only one was even a high 3-star. That meant a unit that started out as something of a liability a couple of years ago has grown, by the end of the 2023 season, into a real strength.

 101.

 102.
The best news for the Wildcats in 2024 is that all of this continues – the defensive line brings back everybody but one from a very full and at this point highly developed group, and the personnel losses throughout the rest of the senior-loaded defense are similarly minimal and shouldn’t be difficult to manage even without any portal additions. I also think the retention and promotion of McGarigle was a good move given how well the linebackers have played, and I think David is right about Smith being a great DL coach, so the staff is set up well to continue building for possibly a top-15 defense.

 103.

 104.

 105.

 106.
In the Wildcats’ 4-2-5 structure, which hasn’t changed significantly despite the staff turnover, it’s typical to see a four-man rotation at defensive tackle, but instead they’ve used five. One of them has graduated, PJ Spencer, but the other four return - #90 DT Bastone, #15 DT Flakes, #94 DT Pearson, and #95 DT Story. They also bring back a couple of redshirt freshmen who played in four games last year, #54 DT Gant and #55 DT Roberts. David said that Northwestern seems to like the greater-than-usual rotation and he expects one or maybe both freshmen to get substantial playing time replacing Spencer.

 107.

 108.
The ends rotated even more guys, and don’t lose anybody. The six in the regular rotation last year were #52 DE Hagarty, #91 DE Hubbard, #47 DE Kilbane, #97 DE McLaughlin, #41 DE Pate, and #4 DE Saka. Kilbane was a true freshman last year who burned his redshirt and Saka was a low 4-star who came in during 2022 so they’re newer additions to the crew, but like the tackles this unit is loaded with guys who’ve been playing together going into their fourth year.

 109.

 110.
I think it’s remarkable that none of the d-linemen was lured away by an NIL payday given the state of the market, and they’re set up for a great season together in 2024. In my opinion the one thing to look out for is that most of them are on their final year of eligibility, and of the eleven or twelve players I expect to see in the regular rotation I believe only four or five will come back for 2025 (and that’s assuming no early NFL departures or transfers out), which may mean the staff tries to play some of the developmental guys early in preparation.

 111.

 112.

 113.

 114.
Northwestern loses their starting MIKE linebacker, Bryce Gallagher, as a UDFA with the Chiefs, but they bring back their starting WILL #34 LB Mueller and SAM / pass rush specialist #5 LB Soares. I’ve been really impressed with Mueller’s play diagnoses over the years, more so than Gallagher actually, and I agree with David that he’s a Butkus Award shortlister. I suggested that Mueller would move to the middle and Soares over to the weakside (instead of just coming in situationally), but David told us that based on his conversations with people around the program those two are going to stay put and the staff will replace Gallagher at MIKE with either #33 LB Brus or #37 LB Uihlein.

 115.

 116.
Those looked like two good options to me during their backup play last year, though the depth beyond them is a bit dicey. #57 LB Metz is the only one with any playing time at all, and that’s pretty minimal despite coming in during the 2020 cycle; meanwhile #45 LB Coleman and #40 LB Reynolds have none despite being 2020 and 2022 recruits respectively, and the two true freshman are low 3-stars who don’t arrive until the Fall. The only other portal addition Northwestern has taken so far on the entire team besides the two o-linemen mentioned earlier is an FCS transfer, Noah Taylor, who got 74 tackles last year, but David shot down my question about him right away and said he didn’t believe he’s a serious candidate for the job, rather a walk-on grad student for purely academic purposes who’s taking the opportunity to add “Big Ten football” to his resume.

 117.

 118.

 119.

 120.
In 2023 the secondary had five starters and five backups, though it was a frequent rotation at the two cornerback spots with three of the backups, while the safeties rotated very little but one of the starters safeties got hurt so one of the backups essentially became a new starter. This is the area where the transfer portal has hit the hardest – starting nickel Rod Heard, starting corner Garnett Hollis, and the backup safety who replaced the hurt starter Jaheem Joseph have all left, the first for Notre Dame and the other two for West Virginia. David said that he thinks they were probably lured away by more NIL money than Northwestern could swing.

 121.

 122.
The corners return the other starter, senior #10 CB T. Johnson, as well as the three backups who are also all upperclassmen, #7 CB Adeyi, #12 CB E. Smith, and #9 CB B. Turner. Adeyi is a year older and has the most experience so I agree with David that he’s the safe bet for the new starter at corner. The depth and playing time here is pretty extensive so I doubt there’ll be a significant dropoff, though none of them has Hollis’ exceptional length.

 123.

 124.
The safeties return #8 DB D. Turner who started on the field side and played very well last year, and grad student #0 DB Azema to the boundary who can be a real impact player but was the one who got hurt and missed a good deal of playing time. Because there wasn’t a Spring game to watch I haven’t been able to see for myself if he’s regained his full range and speed since his injury but David said from watching Azema he believes he’ll be at 100% in the Fall.

 125.

 126.
The most likely option to replace Heard at nickel is #6 DB Fitzgerald, since he was the final backup getting playing time last year. There was only one other scholarship guy who saw the field even a little bit, #18 DB Wallace, but he was a 2021 mid 3-star who’s played so little over the last three years, with a couple of walk-ons getting more playing time last year than he did, that I had my doubts he was in the running … and David flat-out denied it.

 127.

 128.
So while it was easy to guess Fitzgerald by process of elimination, it looks like a precarious depth situation – the backup options would have to be either borrowing a corner who’s never played safety, a walk-on, or one of the six low-to-mid 3-star freshmen (four redshirt, two true) none of whom have ever seen the field. As I mentioned above, the staff was comfortable using minimal rotation at safety last year so assuming that Fitzgerald works out this wouldn’t be an issue, but they already had to deal with one significant safety injury and David and I were both completely stumped as to what would happen if that came up again. This would be a good place to take a transfer just for depth purposes.

 195.
Oregon takes home numerous wins and top finishes across multiple events across the country.

Busy Friday at OSU High Performance and Penn Relays.

 196.
Kendall Martin and Katie Clute claimed victories on Friday at the OSU High Performance held at the Whyte Track and Field Center in Corvallis. The Men of Oregon were also in action, notably securing a fourth-place finish at the Penn Relays in the distance medley relay.

 197.
Martin achieved an impressive feat by shaving more than nine seconds off her personal best, clocking a time of 10:30.53 to win the invitational section of the steeplechase. Originally from Zionsville, Ind., Martin had previously run 10:40.05 at the Oregon Preview on March 22. This marked only her third steeplechase race. During the penultimate water jump, Martin caught up with early leader Caroline Jerotich of Washington State and secured the lead shortly after the following hurdle. Based on season times, Martin now ranks fifth in the Pac-12.

 198.
Meanwhile, Clute led a strong contingent of UO women, finishing first in 16:01.63. She battled Zenah Cheptoo of WSU throughout the final lap, ultimately pulling ahead down the home stretch. Melissa Berry also excelled, posting a time of 16:11.49 for fourth place and a new personal best. Anika Thompson finished ninth in 16:26.92.

 199.
At the Penn Relays, the UO team of Rheinhardt Harrison, James Harding, Matthew Erickson, and Elliott Cook secured fourth place in the DMR Championship of America with a time of 9:36.89. Erickson’s impressive 800-meter leg (1:47.05) was the fastest in the field, and Cook’s final leg (4:00.69) moved the team up to fifth place. This marked Oregon’s first appearance at the Penn Relays since 2017, with Villanova claiming victory in the event.

 200.
In other events at the OSU High Performance meet, Mia Barnett and Ella Nelson finished second and third, respectively, in the 1500 meters. Barnett recorded a season-best time of 4:15.81, closely trailing Olympian Gabriel DeBues-Stafford (4:15.59). Nelson finished with a time of 4:18.84, approaching her best of 4:18.43 from earlier this month.

 201.
To start the day in Corvallis, Vincent Corday secured a runner-up finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.65, nearing his season-best of 53.52 set at the Brutus Hamilton Invite three weeks prior.

 243.
In Tucson, Ross had an outstanding series of throws, with four measurements beyond 19 meters, including a mark of 19.71m/64-8 that matched her collegiate record. She now stands as the third collegian with at least five throws over 19 meters and the first to achieve four such throws in one competition. Ross initially set the collegiate record on April 6 at the Triton Invitational.

 244.
Moran, already the school record holder in the hammer throw, surpassed her own record three times during Saturday’s competition, achieving a final mark of 70.02m/229-8 on her sixth attempt. Moran had previously set the school record of 68.96m/226-3 when she won the Pac-12 title last season, and she exceeded that mark three times on Saturday.

 245.
Moran also met the Olympic Trials standard of 70 meters with her performance, becoming the third woman in the NCAA this season to achieve this distance. In addition to her school record and victory, Moran achieved a runner-up finish and a lifetime best in the discus throw, reaching 54.84m/179-11 on her third attempt, and becoming the No. 6 performer in school history in this event.

 246.
Strunk secured victory in the hammer throw with a lifetime best of 69.11m/226-9, moving up to No. 3 on the program’s all-time list. Ize-Iyamu improved his standing in UO history with a lifetime best of 10.20 in the 100 meters, tying for the No. 7 performer spot in school history. Grebo secured a win on the track with a season-best time of 56.33 in the 400-meter hurdles.

 316.
The Oregon women’s tennis team began Pac-12 tournament play on Wednesday April 24. The #64 ranked and 10-seed Ducks would need an upset against #41 and 7-seed Arizona at the Weil Tennis Academy in Ojai, CA to advance. There would be no plucky underdog story though, as Oregon lost the meet 4-0 to the Wildcats. Arizona took the first two doubles matches 6-0 and 6-2 to secure the point. In singles play, the Wildcats won the first three matches in straight sets to end the competition.

 317.
Candela Aparisi forced her opponent to extra games before falling in her first set 7-6 and then lost the second set 6-3. Uxia Martinez Moral dropped her first set but was leading her second set 5-4 when the match was called. Jo-Yee Chan split her first two sets with Arizona’s Martyna Ostrzygalo 6-3 and 1-6, but was leading 4-1 in the third set that went unfinished.

 323.
 324.

 325.
The women’s team was not selected for the ITA National Championship tournament. The team can take pride in the fact that there only losses this year came to teams currently ranked in the top 75 by the ITA, and all but one were in the top 50. Individual competition will resume this Fall before the team’s first year in the Big Ten next Spring.

 326.
The men’s tournament began a day after the women on Thursday April 25 with Oregon taking with the 7th seeded Ducks taking on 3-seed UCLA. Despite the difference in standing, Oregon had played the Bruins close during the regular season and were confident they could win a rematch. The team backed up their confidence with a decisive 4-1 upset victory.

 327.
Despite the ultimate result, it didn’t look good for the Ducks early as UCLA took the doubles point 2-1. Once singles play started Oregon was dominant though. Quinn Vandecasteele (against the Bruin’s highest ranked player, Govind Nanda), Vlad Breazu, and Lenn Luemkemann all won in straight sets to put UCLA’s back against the wall. Matthew Burton finished the meet in dominant fashion, earning with 4th match victory 6-4, 4-6, and 6-0. Had the remaining matches finished the Ducks could have possibly gone 6-0 in singles play, as Ray Lo was set to begin his third set and David Cierny’s match went unfinished at 6-3, 4-6, 3-3.

 328.

 334.

 335.
The first round upset earned Oregon a date with #11 ranked and 2-seed Arizona on Friday April 26. The Wildcats flipped the script on the Ducks, losing the doubles point before roaring back in singles play for a 4-1 victory. All of Arizona’s singles victories came in straight sets. The only real shot for even a set win was Vlad Breazu whose match was left unfinished at 2-6, 5-4.

 341.
 342.

 343.
The men’s team did not make the ITA National Tournament either. Competition for the men will resume in the fall and the Big Ten season (and more matches with UCLA) will begin next Spring.

 344.
Pac-12 Women’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament

 345.
The lacrosse team finished 5th out of 8 eligible schools in Pac-12 play to earn a birth in the post-season conference tournament. The team’s remarkable turnaround under a new coaching staff this season has been a pleasant surprise, but the tournament showed how far the program still has to go. 4th seeded Arizona State took down the Ducks in the opening round 19-12, and in truth the game was never as close as the score might indicate.

 346.
Oregon was stuck on the defensive from the start, falling behind 4-0 before Haley Cummins got them on the board with 5:41 left in the 1st quarter. The Sun Devils were machine like, scoring 6 goals in each of the first three quarters as they out-shot the Ducks 30-13 over the same span. Starting goalie Cassidy Eckert played well, allowing 12 goals but making 7 saves. Her partner in the net Thayer Hubbard struggled though allowing 7 goals with 0 saves. The Sun Devils allowed fewer shots on goal and dominated in draw controls. With a commanding 18-6 lead going into the 4th quarter Arizona State rested their starters. Oregon showed determination and continued to play hard throughout the game, but the outcome was never in doubt.

 347.

 351.
 352.
 353.

 354.
Lacrosse enters the off season in much better shape than they were a year ago. This loss serves as a reality check of what will be expected of them in a Big Ten conference that will feature more powerful teams than the Pac-12. As the team bids goodbye to the seniors who helped lay the foundation, it will be up to the returning players and new recruits to continue to build.

 401.
But it wasn’t easy.

 402.
Oregon started Matt Umlandt, who has been pitching well of late in midweek games, and thus got the start. Tuesday, however, was not Umlandt’s night. Umlandt was not in control from the outset of this game, and it’s a wonder that the Ducks were able to come back after he dished a grand slam in the first inning.

 408.
 409.

 410.
Over the weekend, Oregon’s bats were mightily ineffective and there was reason to be concerned that the Ducks would not respond. In fact, initially they did not. Umlandt was hooked after the first inning in favor of Brock Moore, and Moore game up a leadoff homer in the top of the second inning.

 411.

 416.
 417.

 418.
So, that’s not a problem, right? Well, it was a problem, except for the fact the the Oregon bats decided to come to life in the bottom of the second inning.

 419.
The Ducks took advantage of OSU defensive miscues in the third inning, Oregon State may be stellar when it comes to pitching, but they’re not the greatest defensive team around and it showed in the second. After a couple of hits, Oregon took advantage of a fielding error to score Jeffrey Heard. Bryce Boettcher then killed a three run homer to take the score to 5-4 in favor of OSU.

 426.

 427.
With this, a collective gasp could be heard in PK Park, because this game was going to be contested.

 428.
Moore pitched very well in the 3rd and 4th, putting the Beavers down in order.

 429.

 434.
 435.

 436.
The Oregon pitchers blanked OSU for the rest of the game. Jaxon Jordan, Bradley Mullan, and Logan Mercado combined to keep the Beavers from scoring again.

 437.
Meanwhile, Oregon played some small ball and picked up runs, but also went for yard to put the game away.

 444.

 445.
With the lead in hand, Oregon played some fantastic defense. With this defensive play, Bryce Boettcher throws an ace to get the runner out on third, but it’s really the fast foot work of Carter Garate that gets the out.

 472.
Oregon baseball (30-14, 12-9 Pac-12) is now in 4th place in the Pac-12 standings. And who is in first place? Well - interestingly enough - that would be Utah, and the Ducks host the Utes this coming weekend in a critical stand for Oregon. Get a series win - or a sweep - and the Ducks will improve their standing considerably going into May. This is going to be a great series, and it starts on Friday, 5/3, at 6:05 pm PT. If you can’t make it to PK Park, then you can watch it on the Pac-12 Network.
