12.
Marquette Soccer Assistant Coach Round Up

  13.

  17.
It took a minute, but Chris Allen officially has two assistant coaches now. | Marquette University

  18.

  19.
  20.
Chris Allen recently announced two assistant coaches, which reminded me I forgot to say anything about David Korn’s latest addition in early April

On the 1st of May, Marquette women’s soccer head coach Chris Allen announced the addition of two assistant coaches for his staff. I am going to presume that the athletic department waited until both were hired and working on campus before announcing this, because otherwise Allen’s been running the program entirely on his own since he was hired in mid-January and WHOOOO, that sounds tiring.

  21.
Anyway!

  22.
Chelsea Davis and Jacqueline Baetz are joining Allen’s staff for his first year in Milwaukee. Here’s what he said about his new crew:

  23.

  24.
“I am ecstatic to announce two coaching staff additions who are as passionate, excited and committed to the process of returning the Marquette women’s soccer program back to BIG EAST and national prominence as I am,” Allen said. “Chelsea and Jacqueline are two of the most engaging, positive, enthusiastic, tough and relentless people I have had the privilege of being around.

  25.
“Simply put, they are going to make me better, our program better and this already special Marquette community that much better. I was always told that good people tend to find good people, and I am glad they found us.”

  26.

  27.
It might just be a coach-speak kind of thing, but I like the “they found us” bit at the end.

  28.
Davis is the assistant with more coaching experience behind her. She comes to Marquette after serving as head coach for Division 3 Pacific University Oregon for the past two years, and then the head coach at D3 Palomar College the year before that. Davis has Division 1 experience at both San Francisco and Fresno State, and it’s that last one where she played as a midfielder and won three WAC championships.

  29.
Baetz has the more recent playing experience, making 50 starts for Missouri State before spending the 2022 season as a grad transfer on a bonus season of eligibility with Lindenwood. She was a All-Missouri Valley Conference midfielder with MSU three times and earned All-Newcomer honors in the OVC during her one year with Lindenwood. Baetz moved from the field to the sideline with the Lions last year to get started on a coaching career.

  30.
Seeing the press release about Allen’s two new assistants reminded me that I just completely whiffed on mentioning an addition to David Korn’s staff on the men’s soccer side of things. Waaaaaaaaaaay back on April 10th, Korn and Marquette announced the hiring of Zach Neiberger as an assistant coach. He joins Callum Mallace and Sean Clancy on the staff for Korn’s first season as head coach in 2024.

  31.
Here’s what Korn said about him in the press release at the time:

  32.

“Since meeting Zach, we’ve been impressed with the energy, ambition and expertise he brings. His experience playing at high levels within Division 1 as well as coaching at the collegiate level will be an asset to our team and staff,” Coach Korn highlighted on the addition. “Zach’s ability to build relationships will be beneficial to our student-athletes and recruiting process. He’s passionate about seeing our Marquette soccer program excel on and off the field.”

  33.
Neiberger has been at St. Cloud State since 2020, helping the Huskies establish their program at the Division 2 level and having been there from (almost) nearly the start. He also has coaching experience at Hamline in D3, and he played at the Division 1 level at both San Diego State and Milwaukee before medically retiring due to concussions.

  34.
The next question for both teams is the most obvious one: Who y’all playin’ next season? Last year, we got the schedules for both squads in early June, so it might be a minute before get any answers to that question.

  73.

  74.
Bediako, who measures in at 6’3”, was at Georgia Tech for her freshman season in 2023-24. She was playing a bit part off the bench to start the season, appearing in seven of GT’s first 12 games, but never playing more than 10 minutes. After about a month of not playing, she saw three minutes of action against Duke on January 14th, and then didn’t play again until seeing the floor for a little under eight minutes in what turned into the season finale against Mississippi State in the first round of the WBIT. Even then, she didn’t sub in until the second half when the Yellow Jackets were already down 20 on the road.

  75.
So, you can kind of understand why maaaaaaaaaaybe she was interested in a fresh start.

  76.
Bediako came into Georgia Tech fresh off of representing her home country of Canada in the 2023 FIBA U19 World Cup last July. She played in six of Canada’s seven games on their way to a third place finish, averaging 1.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. Now, yeah, that doesn’t sound like much. But I went out of my way to point this out because 1) International experience is neat and 2) this is a U19 roster that MU’s Skylar Forbes didn’t even go to training camp for after playing for the U18 team the year before. I’m not saying that Bediako is obviously better than Forbes..... but I am pointing out the decisions that Team Canada made.

  77.
In case you were wondering, “hey, that name sounds familiar,” let me help you out here. Yes, Jada Bediako is the younger sister of former Alabama center Charles Bediako and former Santa Clara/Seton Hall center Jaden Bediako. If she ends up averaging 10 points or seven rebounds a game at some point for Marquette, she will get to lay claim to bragging rights over her brothers as the best college basketball player in the family.

  78.
And now, Marquette’s brand new scholarship chart, with Bediako joining the Golden Eagles with three years of eligibility remaining.

  79.

  80.
  81.

  82.
Six of the nine women on the roster for 2024-25 are listed at six feet or taller. That’s not terrible. The roster is still heavily tilted towards the front court, especially with each of MU’s sophomores part of the group that’s taller than six feet. With nine women on board for next fall and six scholarship spots still open, I feel like Consuegra and her staff are still not close to done here, but they have to find a way to balance bringing bodies through the door to field a team and actually building long term. Right now, Marquette does not project to have any freshmen on the roster at all, which has upsides and downsides.

  100.

  101.
  102.
Do you prefer “Second Round” or “Conference Semifinals” which is what the league says to make it sound fancier?

And then there was one.

  103.
Due to injuries, only one NBA team with a Marquette men’s basketball connection is in the second round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs. The knee injury that Jimmy Butler suffered in the play-in tournament game against Philadelphia kept him sidelined against Boston, and the Miami Heat went down in five games, pulling off one win because they hit 23 three-pointers in Boston in Game 2. A late regular season calf strain kept Giannis Antetokounmpo out for Milwaukee’s entire series against Indiana, and an Achilles strain suffered during the series cost Damian Lillard a game and presumably limited him in the closeout contest against the Pacers. Is it weird that Milwaukee won the game that Giannis and Dame missed? It’s definitely a historical anomaly, as they became the first team in NBA history to win a playoff game while missing their top two scorers from the regular season. In any case, that’s why Jae Crowder and Doc Rivers are no longer on our list of dudes to watch in the postseason.

  104.
That leaves us with just one guy to watch, and, well, that injury thing might end up stopping us from actually watching him....

  105.
Olivier-Maxence Prosper: Dallas Mavericks

  106.
Well, the good news is that Dallas beat the Clippers in six games to pull the 4/5 upset in the first round. The bad news is that we’re almost definitely not going to get to see OMax in the second round. After appearing for one minute in the Mavericks’ Game 1 loss to Los Angeles, Prosper suffered an ankle sprain prior to Game 3, and did not appear again after that. I’m not saying it’s a pretty nasty ankle sprain because I’m not a doctor, but I am saying that he was on crutches before Game 4.

  110.

  111.
Then again, he was off the crutches — but in a walking boot — before Game 6, so who knows?

  114. Photo by Joe Murphy/NBAE via Getty Images
  115.

  116.
Dallas was led in the series by, of course, Luka Doncic, who averaged 29.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 9.5 assists in the six game set with the Clippers. Kyrie Irving did a lot of scoring as well, averaging over 26 points per game, and the Mavs got a nice bump from PJ Washington who went for nearly 11 points per game in the series, too.

  117.
They’ll be set against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals, who tied with Denver for the best record in the conference and won the #1 seed by way of tiebreakers. The Thunder are incredibly young, with leading scorer Shai Gilgeous-Alexander standing as the oldest of the five guys who averaged at least 10 points a game in their four game sweep of New Orleans in the first round..... and he is only 25 years old. He led the team with 27.3 points per game against the Pelicans, but Jalen Williams went for over 21 per night, and those two tied for the team lead in assists at five per game. Chet Holmgren, who made being super tall and lanky cool long before Victory Wembanyama came along, was OKC’s leading rebounder in the series at 8.8 per game.

  118.
If you’re looking for a reason to cheer against the Thunder other than “it would be fun if OMax was in the conference finals,” well, then let me point out to you that the “What A Pro Wants” AT&T commercial that you’ve been seeing constantly since the NCAA tournament features SGA and Holmgren. I don’t want to say they should be punished for the heavy rotation that the ad has been in, but I am saying that maaaaaaaaaaaybe karma needs to balance things out a little bit here.

  139.

  140.
  141.
Maybe not surprising news, but particularly important news relative to their draft prospects.

With the NBA Draft Combine set for May 12-19 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, it made sense that the league office needed to get moving on the list of players invited to the combine after the early entry deadline passed. That came through on Friday evening.... which seems like a weird time, but oh well. In any case, we’re here because yes, Marquette’s Oso Ighodaro and Tyler Kolek are both on the 78 player list for the Combine.

  142.

  143.

  144.
The NBA announced today that 78 players have been invited to the 2024 NBA Draft Combine, which will take place from May 12-19 at Wintrust Arena and the Marriott Marquis in Chicago.

Additionally, a select number of standout players from the 2024 NBA G League Elite Camp, which… pic.twitter.com/M8FUY529ul
— NBA Communications (@NBAPR) May 3, 2024
  145.

  146.
  147.
  148.

  149.
While it’s not a surprise that either man is invited to the Combine given their inclusion on various early mock drafts and big boards, it is a very positive sign for their draft prospects. The Combine invites go out to the players that the front offices around the league agree on as the top prospects for the draft. With just 58 picks in the draft this year because Philadelphia and Phoenix have to forfeit draft picks because of shenanigans, it’s always a good thing to find out that the league’s brain trusts have you as one of the top 78 prospects in the draft pool.

  150.
This year is particularly important in that regard, as the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement with the players’ association now requires invitees to attend and participate in Combine activities or else be disqualified from the draft. Also: We should point out that it’s actually only 77 players now, as for some reason, Creighton’s Ryan Kalkbrenner entered his name into the early entry process juuuuuuuuuust long enough for the general managers to vote him into the Combine, but then announced his return to the Bluejays before the Combine list was released. Weird choice, bro, but whatever.

  151.
Here’s a weird thing that got released into the public by Shams Charania: Not only is there a vote by the teams, but there’s only some specific teams that will have access to certain medical information about the tippy top players. As such, we now know who the ten most wanted players for the Combine are...... and the only college basketball players in the top six played for UConn.

  152.

  153.

  154.
NBA released a 78-player list for the 2024 Draft Combine in Chicago this month. Teams vote on participants, which include Bronny James.

New "Top 10 Players" ranked for which teams are able to access Combine information: pic.twitter.com/AoRpaSnCFw
— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) May 3, 2024
  155.

  156.
  157.
  158.

  159.
Ighodaro led Marquette in rebounding at 6.9 caroms per game in 2023-24 as the Golden Eagles reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament for the first time in over a decade. He also contributed 13.4 points, 2.9 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game, and widely earned himself a reputation as one of if not the most talented college big men in the country. Kolek ended up leading the country in assists per game at 7.7, edging out Purdue’s Braden Smith and Minnesota’s Elijah Hawkins at 7.5 per night. Kolek also contributed 15.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game on his way to becoming just the third multi-time All-American in program history.

  160.
In case you’re curious, here’s the other Big East names on the Combine list:

  161.
Trey Alexander, Creighton
Devin Carter, Providence
Stephon Castle, UConn
Donovan Clingan, UConn
Alex Karaban, UConn
Tristen Newton, UConn
Baylor Scheierman, Creighton
Cam Spencer, UConn

  162.
I don’t know about you, but I’m really pulling for Alex Karaban at the Combine. Go forth and set the world on fire, my guy, make those NBA teams need to draft you.

  174.
Andrew Stimmel Steps Down As Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach

  175.

  176.
  177.

  178.
  179.
Marquette University

  180.

  181.
  182.
At least that’s what the press release says

2023-24 has become The Year Of Coaching Changes at Marquette. On Thursday afternoon, men’s lacrosse joined men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and women’s basketball in seeing a change at the top, as head coach Andrew Stimmel is stepping down. Per Marquette’s press release, a national search for a replacement will begin immediately.

  183.
Officially, we’re saying this is Stimmel stepping down, because that’s how it’s phrased in his words in the press release, emphasis mine:

  184.

  185.
“This is a great place,” Stimmel said. “I’ve had two of my kids here and my family has grown up here. I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given, and Marquette will always hold a special place in my heart.

  186.
“It’s been a dream of mine to get to this level since I was a young kid and I’m grateful that I’ve been given that opportunity. At the same time, it’s time for me to step down and spend some more time with my family. I will forever love my time here and look forward to rooting for this team in the future. Whoever takes over will find a hard-working group of kids that love one another and compete. Looking forward to a bright future for what’s next.”

  187.

  188.
That is the fifth and sixth paragraph of the six paragraph press release. The first paragraph/sentence is “announced a leadership change” and the second is “Andrew Stimmel will not return.” I feel like if the university wanted to make a big deal about Andrew Stimmel stepping down, they would have put it at the top of the page.... and they did not.

  189.
The reason why that athletics might be letting that phrasing come out in Stimmel’s quote as opposed to any other way? Fact of the matter is that he leaves Marquette with a record of 21-41 in five seasons, and that includes a record of 6-19 in Big East action. More accurately: Marquette is just 14-18 in the last two seasons and 1-9 in Big East play after an 0-5 campaign in 2024. The Golden Eagles lost nine of their last 10 games this spring, and over the past three years, Marquette has won just one of their last 13 contests against Big East teams, including a loss to Georgetown in the 2022 Big East conference tournament.

  190.
Part of that league record is playing in an incredibly competitive conference where Denver and Georgetown have been ranked pretty much the entire time and Villanova’s been flitting in and out as well. But on the other hand, in that 1-12 run over the past three seasons, Marquette has been outscored 207-150. Would this coaching change still happen if Stimmel had scheduled less aggressively and not taken losses to ranked Notre Dame, Michigan, and Penn State this season? It’s hard to blame him for doing that, because MU was 2-1 against those same teams a year ago.

  191.
The other end of things is merely looking at the Marquette history book and asking questions. Five of the 13 best point scorers in program history and three of the top five played on the 2024 Marquette team. That three in the top five includes the guys who broke the career goals record and the career assists record this spring. On the other end of the field was the program’s first ever three-time All-American before the 2024 season started, and the same guy who broke the career ground balls record this season. #3 on that all-time ground balls chart is the guy who is currently #9 in the country in faceoff winning percentage this season.

  192.
Andrew Stimmel coached every single minute of all seven of those guys’ careers at Marquette, and he went 21-41.

  193.
I’m not saying I wanted a change and I’m not saying I expected a change. I am, however, saying that I can justify a change.

  194.
Winning in men’s lacrosse is hard. There’s only 76 Division 1 programs, and so in a 14 game schedule, you have to, by mathematical elimination, play 18% of the teams in the country. Only 17 make the NCAA tournament, and nine of those spots are by way of automatic bids from the league championships. It’s hard to say that Andrew Stimmel had the program going in a positive direction, even with Marquette earning preseason top 20 votes heading into 2024. In fact, the Golden Eagles finishing 4-10 and going winless in the Big East after some pundits expected a jump up from them can probably be used as an explanation as to why things were not going well for Stimmel. Now it’s someone else’s job to figure out how to get the program back on track.

  233.
  234.
  235.

  236.
First, let’s knock out head coach Cara Consuegra’s comments on Aryelle Stevens:

  237.

“We are very excited to welcome Aryelle to the Marquette family,” said coach Cara Consuegra. “Aryelle is a versatile forward who can score on the inside and outside and can defend multiple positions. She is joining us from one of the best junior colleges in the country, and we know she’ll be prepared to make the jump to the BIG EAST. Aryelle has the work ethic and values we look for in a player and we are confident she will make a positive impact on our team on and off the court.”

  238.
And now we move on to Olivia Porter, who joins Marquette after one year at Michigan State and one year at Charlotte. Here’s what Consuegra’s highlighting about her newest backcourt player:

  239.

“Olivia is an exciting addition to our program and we are thrilled to welcome her to Milwaukee,” Consuegra said. “In her first year with me at Charlotte she did a tremendous job adapting to our system and running our team. Olivia is a great ball handler and playmaker at the guard position. She has the ability to score at all three levels and her composure and confidence will be contagious amongst our team.”

  240.
After appearing in just six games for Michigan State in 2022-23, Porter left East Lansing after a coaching change due to Suzy Merchant stepping down to to health related reasons. The 5’8” guard from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, stepped straight into the starting lineup this past season for Consuegra and the 49ers, averaging 6.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game in just over 31 minutes per night. Porter was one of the better three-point shooters in the country at 36.4%, but she only attempted 1.8 long range shots per game. I don’t think we have to worry about her confidence in her shot, because here’s Porter being cold as hell, knocking down a game winner with a hand in her face with time expiring in overtime and Charlotte trailing by two.

  246.
  247.

  248.
Let’s go to the scholarship chart real quick like....

  249.

  250.
  251.

  252.
The best news about adding Porter is now there’s depth in the backcourt with Lee Volker and Bridget Utberg no longer projected to play every single minute. Porter was Charlotte’s starting point guard last season, standing as the only woman averaging more than three assists per game. Whether or not she takes up that role at Marquette is up to Consuegra, but the fact of the matter is that Porter was recruited to play at Michigan State in the first place, so there’s reason to believe she can handle being a starting PG in a Power Five conference.

  253.
The addition of Porter brings Marquette to eight women on the roster for 2024-25, without a single one holding freshman status. I don’t think that’s terribly surprising, and I’m not entirely sure that will change at any point. I think it’s safe to say that Consuegra isn’t done recruiting with seven scholarship spots still sitting open, but I also suspect that putting out a press release on the addition of a Charlotte signee and a Charlotte transfer tells us something. If there was another Charlotte-related addition coming or even likely or possible, specifically either leading scorer Dazia Lawrence or announced transfer Dyllan Hanna, perhaps this press release sits and waits another day or two. It’s possible that Marquette and Consuegra just want the news out as soon as they have it, but you have to admit a certain amount of sense in announcing all of the Charlotte additions all at the same time.

  254.
With the portal only just closing yesterday, there’s still lots of time for phone calls and visits and decisions, and I’m pretty sure this won’t be the last change to the scholarship chart for next season between now and September.

  294.
We turn to the Marquette press release for more information. First on Woodward:

  295.

  296.
Woodward is an unanimous first team selection for the second time in as many years and a first team choice for the third time overall. The four-time team captain was also a second team selection in 2022.

  297.
Woodward is Marquette’s all-time leader with 265 career ground balls and ranks second in program history with 84 caused turnovers. He paced MU with 18 caused turnovers for the fourth time in 2024, while picking up 53 ground balls and posting three points on a pair of goals and an assist.

  298.

  299.
And O’Grady:

  300.

O’Grady, a junior, is an all-league selection for the third time in his career. He led Marquette with 26 goals in 2024 and became the program’s all-time scoring leader on Feb. 24 against then-No. 13/12 Michigan. The native of Milton, Massachusetts ended the season with 114 career scores and is third in Marquette history with 133 points in 43 career games.

  301.
And Williams:

  302.

Williams is a second team selection for the second time in his career after leading the BIG EAST for much of the season in faceoff winning percentage. The graduate student ended the year third in the league with a mark of .593 (140-236) at the dot and picked up a team-high 90 ground balls. He also scored two goals and added a pair of assists. Williams concluded his MU career second in program history with 386 career faceoff wins and third in ground balls with 212.

  303.
In individual award news, Denver took home three of the trophies with Malcolm Kleban being named Goalkeeper of the Year and Jimmy Freehill and Alec Stathakis ending up as the unanimous choice for Defensive Player and Specialist of the Year respectively. Providence’s Ryan Bell was the Offensive Player of the Year after averaging 4.60 points per game in conference play, while Georgetown goalie Anderson Moore was tabbed as the Freshman of the Year in the Big East while ranking first in the league with just 8.80 goals allowed per 60 minutes.

  324.
The former Charlotte signee will be headed to Milwaukee instead.

Well, it appears, from what I can tell, that Cara Consuegra’s entire recruiting class for 2024 will be following her from Charlotte to Marquette Golden Eagles.

  325.
That recruiting class, according to the press releases that the 49ers put out in November, consisted entirely of Aryelle Stevens, a 6’1” post player from Pearland, Texas. Stevens was attending Gulf Coast State College in the junior college ranks for the past two seasons, so she will join the Golden Eagles with two years of eligibility.

  345.
Here’s what was in the Charlotte press release on Stevens signing in November:

  346.

  347.
Stevens appeared in 16 games last season for Gulf Coast State where she averaged 7.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 60.2% from the floor. Her best performance of the season came against Daytona State where she scored 22 points on 8 for 11 shooting. In the game, she grabbed seven rebounds, with five of them being offensive.

  348.
“We are very excited to welcome Aryelle to our Niner family,” said coach Cara Consuegra. “Our number one goal for the early signing period was to sign depth at the post position and she is a stellar addition. Aryelle is a versatile forward who can score on the inside and the perimeter as well as defend multiple positions. She is joining us from the same junior college as Imani Smith which is one of the best in the country, so we know she will be prepared. Lastly, Aryelle has the work ethic and values we look for in a player and we are confident she will impact our team on and off the court. “

  349.

  350.
Stevens averaged 9.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.0 steals per game in 33 contests for the Commodores this past season. While Consuegra identified her as a post presence in the Charlotte press release, Stevens was comfortable stepping outside to shoot, firing away from behind the three-point line 77 times in 2023-24. However, she wasn’t all that great at hitting that shot, connecting on just 24.7% of those tries. Stevens was pretty good inside the arc at over 57% shooting, so we’ll just have to wait and see how she fits into Consuegra’s overall gameplan in the fall.

  351.
Speaking of fitting in, this is a reunion of former Gulf Coast State teammates, as current MU forward Abbey Cracknell was at GCSC with Stevens in 2022-23. Having two players on the team with an existing relationship on the court can’t be a bad thing when you’re a first year head coach.

  352.
Onwards to the scholarship chart!

  353.

  355.

  356.
I’m not going to lie to you here: Marquette needs some backcourt players to move the basketball around pretty badly right now. There’s lots of playing time available, so this shouldn’t be much of a problem, but even if you squint and say Abbey Cracknell and Halle Vice are wings, you’ve got Bridget Utberg and Lee Volker starting in the backcourt with no one backing them up right now. There’s a long time to go between now and November, so I’m not going to worry about it, but I’d be really excited about seeing someone who averaged 4 assists and shot 35% from three signing up next.

  357.
Since we are talking about Charlotte recruits here, I think we have to mention Dyllan Hanna, who was announced as transferring from Florida Atlantic to Charlotte on April 12th... five days before Marquette announced that Consuegra was hired. I would imagine that there’s nothing mechanically wrong in the eyes of the NCAA with her moving her commitment along, but she is a 6’2” center and as mentioned, that’s not really what Marquette needs on the roster right now.
