41.
Milwaukee Bucks links for your perusal on May 6th, 2024

There is plenty to mourn about the half-unsurprising sudden close to the Milwaukee Bucks 2023-2024 season, but if there is one thing that stands above the rest for me it is the fact of how little we truly learned about this team.

  42.
We, of course, learned during the regular season that a dynamic backcourt pairing of Damian Lillard and Malik Beasley is the equivalent of morphing every opposing guard into an All-World talent. We learned that Khris Middleton continues to be banged up and unavailable for long stretches of time. We saw once again that Bobby Portis gives and takes in equal measure, and sometimes in painfully unequal measure as well. We found out that Brook Lopez anchoring the defense doesn’t work with every kind of personnel around him. We did witness Giannis Antetokounmpo slowly but surely meld his game with Lillard’s without any meaningful final payoff. We learned that the AJs, Green and Jackson Jr., have a pulse. And we confirmed that it’ll take a hell of a young talent or dire desperation to crack Doc Rivers’s rotation of veterans.

  43.
I guess we did learn quite a bit, actually.

  44.
But what we didn’t learn is how it all comes together. Consider that from Doc’s takeover to elimination the Bucks got a grand total of eight games of Giannis/Khris/Dame together. Eight. Giannis legged it out for 73 appearances this season while Lillard did the same (his best mark since 2018-2019), so there was crossover with the two that matter most, but whatever whole Jon Horst planned on taking the team to the promised land just... never happened?

  45.
So the team embarks on yet another offseason with far more questions than answers. And worst of all the data they’ve available is totally incomplete. Yet somehow falling back on the usual “run it back” strategy feels like asking for serious trouble, too. I don’t envy those making decisions, but there’s also a reason I’m writing this at home and they’re the ones who get to make the calls.

  46.
For all our sakes, I hope they make the right ones.

  47.
Let’s roundup!

  52.

  53.
We were already quite aware of how constrained the team was going to be both cap-wise and roster spot-wise heading into this summer, but those problems could be grudgingly accepted in a world where Milwaukee made a run to the Finals. A first-round exit with very few established reliable facts to plan forward with besides the fact that guys are old and injury-prone? Yikes.

  54.
Laughed a bit at the idea that a key play will be offering Malik Beasley 120% of his $2.7 million salary to stick around after the summer (~$3.24 million). Unless he’s happy coming off the bench, I’m good on that experiment.

  62.

  63.
The rigamarole never really stops. It just had a little help from the team itself to start spinning up again.

  64.

  65. Giannis Antetokounmpo: Tried best but wasn’t close to playing (ESPN) & Damian Lillard laments Bucks’ injuries after playoff exit (ESPN)
  66.

  67.
I applaud the team for all its gamesmanship around the injury situations — although how many more “verys” could Doc have used preceding “close” before the jig was up — but I guess it is a sort of cold comfort knowing Giannis wasn’t going to be back even if the team did force a game seven. I’m torn between acknowledging the work the remaining players did to win two games and also acknowledging that in spite of all that, they came out losers. Them’s the breaks, I suppose.

  68.
Mock Draft Prospect of the Week

  69.
Yves Missi - Freshman, Baylor - 7’0”, 235 pounds, 19 years old, Center

  70.
Consider this the debut of a new bit to help us conduct a little bit of scouting as we wait for the NBA Draft to arrive. I’ll do my best to scour a few mock drafts and find players mocked to be in Milwaukee’s range with a semblance of a fit with the roster as constructed.

  71.
This week’s candidate is one Yves Missi, a seven-footer who, true, has been mocked to go a bit higher than the Bucks selection at 23, but I’ve hope that the league’s obsession with guys listed 6’7” to 6’9” will have the league overlooking our newest center prospect. He appeared in 34 games for Baylor with 32 starts and averaged 22.9 minutes with 10.7 points (.614/.000/.616), 5.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks. From the highlights, it appears he is high motor and all gas with all the ups and downs that brings:

  72.

  73.
In general, he looks to have just the right combo of size, speed, and strength that should allow him to hang in the league from the jump, but it wouldn't be a shock if he is easy to bait into fouls and generally is too chaotic to ever get into Doc Rivers’s good graces. The upside is that he could be a great immediate fit in a couple different defensive schemes running alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo. The downside is that he has no space to his offensive game at all and we haven’t seen that kind of big next to Giannis in years. Still, it would be an interesting change of pace stylistically, and an overabundance of athleticism/energy could bring a nice jolt to the rotation.

  149.
  150.
Where we find out just how much fans are done with Jae Crowder

This is the first in what will be a series of articles documenting what went wrong in the Bucks first-round defeat at the hands of the Pacers, which will then move into a season-long point of view before we firmly put it all behind us. We begin with one of our SB Nation Reacts surveys, where we asked a couple overarching questions about the series, beginning with some finger-pointing:

  151.

  152.
  153.

  154.
There have been vocal, but small and ultimately not representative sections of the fanbase who are tarring-and-feathering Jon Horst, Doc Rivers, or [insert role player here]. To be sure, all of these parties deserve some blame for going out in the first round, but that’s how things work with a team/franchise. A sizeable majority of fans believe that injuries were to blame for how things turned out, and they’re right. Without Giannis Antetokounmpo, an all-timer in his prime, the Bucks are akin to a lower-seeded playoff team even with Damian Lillard and Khris Middleton both going into flamethrower mode. Take Dame out of the series with injury and even peak Middleton isn’t enough, given the lack of quality talent around him.

  155.

  156.
  157.

  158.
That brings us to the next poser, which moves onto offseason discussion: if you could only move on from ONE of these three players, who would it be?

  159.

  160.
  161.

  162.
This trio earned a lot of ire from Bucks fans the past couple of weeks, with the venom going back much further for Beasley and Crowder. After he was a DNP-CD in both Game 5 and 6, it’s become clear that BOSSMAN 99 is not in the Bucks future plans. Rightfully so, as he provided so little on either end in Game 2 when Indiana absolutely crushed the Bucks in the mere fifteen minutes he was on the floor (-21) that he got just two minutes in Game 3. He really only got into Game 4 because Dame was hurt and the Bucks needed all hands on deck, but he was clearly behind A.J. Green and Andre Jackson Jr. in the rotation.

  163.
I think a lot of fans probably also want to move on from Beasley and a sizeable amount from Portis too, to say nothing of other role players on the roster who would probably get an even bigger share of the votes. However, the way this question was worded (the text in the image is a bit misleading based on how it originally appeared earlier this week) really shows the disdain people have for Crowder. Though bringing him back on a minimum was a fine bit of business in a vacuum, giving up five second-round picks to acquire him the year before stings, even more so when you consider that his market was that bad due to being played off the floor in the 2023 Playoffs. He’s pretty washed and will definitely have to settle for a minimum, likely towards the far end of the bench, even on a non-contending team.

  164.
As an aside, I find it pretty bizarre that after he stunk against Miami and then-head coach Mike Budenholzer benched him, so many fans took his side when he expressed his disdain for how Bud handled his role because so many fans wanted him fired. That made me shake my head then—Crowder was real bad in the 2023 first round—and benching him was a decision Bud got right. A year later, he looks even more correct after Doc Rivers made the same conclusion. Crowder has so few fans among the Bucks’ faithful, and I imagine all of those who rushed to his support in 2023 as a way to denounce the head coach are long gone from his side.

  187.
Let’s start picking up the pieces

In this week’s Tuesday Tracker, we posed a few questions with the Bucks about to go into Game 5 down 3-1, so these are mostly mid-series opinions. Now that the series and season are done, we’ll be back next week with some with more of a sense of finality. We’ll also look at trends over the season. Here are the highlights:

  188.

  189.
70% of fans polled think the injuries to Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard are beyond anyone’s control, but 28% put some blame on the team.

  190.
85% are pro-Khris Middleton after his huge series, and 81% of those never wavered. An astounding 15% still aren’t fans of his, which is absurd.

  191.
In the wake of his Game 4 ejection, 47% of respondents think Bobby Portis hurt the Bucks this series more than he helped.

  192.
82% think Andre Jackson Jr. should have the bigger role next season than A.J. Green.

  193.
Polls were pretty split on Doc Rivers (29% approval, 38% disapproval) and Jon Horst (41% approval, 38% disapproval).

  194.
32% of fans kept the faith that the Bucks could still win a title, undoubtedly hoping for a Giannis return that didn’t happen.

  195.

  196.

  205.
Thanks again for voting! We’ll be back with one more poll next week to wrap up the season before we take a break until closer to the NBA Draft in June and free agency in July.

  224.
  225.
Time to put this season firmly in the rearview

The Bucks season ended meekly last night in Indianapolis with a 120-98 Game 6 loss to the Indiana Pacers, who will move on to face the New York Knicks in the second round. Damian Lillard returned for the Bucks and led all scorers with 28, but they remained without superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who missed an entire series a year after missing two of five games. Obi Toppin and T.J. McConnell led the Pacers off their bench with 21 and 20, respectively.

  226.
Game Summary

  227.
My colleague Jackson did a pretty good job of summarizing the game in his rapid, so instead of doing the usual quarter-by-quarter synopsis, I’ll just share some overarching themes I noticed in each one.

  228.
In the first, the Bucks came out looking solid behind early Brook Lopez shotmaking, but it didn’t take long before the Pacers took a lead they wouldn’t surrender. Miscommunications on defense led to some wide-open Indiana looks while Milwaukee started going cold. Down nine entering the second, the defense improved a little but the iciness from the field persisted. The Bucks got it to three early in the quarter but then let it get away from them a bit, with the Pacers able to answer every time the Bucks threatened to make it closer than seven by pushing it back out into double-digits. Most frustratingly, every Buck miss inside turned into a Pacers make on the other end since the Pacers threw the ball upcourt after every miss, knowing they had numbers with at least one Buck still by the other rim. That made for a lot of four- and five-point swings that killed any chance of Milwaukee momentum.

  229.
Indiana kept up that pattern in the third, until closing the quarter on an 8-0 run that spelled doom for the Bucks and opened it to fifteen. T.J. McConnell remembered he was playing the Bucks and extended that run and advantage at the start of the final frame, with an early dagger three that made it an eighteen-point game. There was really no coming back from this early fourth-quarter run the Pacers—who built the advantage out to 24 at one point—embarked on, and whatever shooting the Bucks had found after the half was gone by the fourth. In all these ways, this resembled what happened in Game 4.

  230.
The battered Bucks now head into the offseason needing their three stars to recover from lower body injuries that hampered two of them so significantly that they missed games.

  231.
What Did We Learn?

  232.
I’m a big believer in Occam’s Razor, especially when it comes to how I think about basketball. The explanation for how this game and series went is simple, and there’s really nowhere else to start: the Bucks got zero minutes from Giannis, who averaged 42.2 and thirteen versus the Pacers this year, in this series. So many of Milwaukee’s problems in this game and their other losses would have been solved by his presence: defensive rebounding, scoring around the rim, putting enough points on the board, the list goes on. People will dissect other elements of why the Bucks lost and/or why this team came up short, but any discourse that doesn’t first acknowledge that they were without one of the best players on earth for the entirety of the series is missing the overarching point.

  233.
Three Byes?

  234.
I’m going to highlight three guys here who might have played their last games for the franchise yesterday evening. They are all under contract until next season, but their salaries (and in two cases, positive value) make them prime trade candidates and thus good ways to improve the roster for next season. I won’t be talking about Jae Crowder because he was the only active Buck who didn’t play last night, he’s a free agent, and he is cooked. I’ll touch on Malik Beasley and Patrick Beverley later.

  235.
Brook Lopez had a pretty good series.

  236.
He missed both his three-point attempts last night, but was 7/10 inside the arc and did a fine job of getting Milwaukee baskets when it really needed them. He missed three free throws but getting to the line nine times represented a season-high for him. With 20 points on the night, he finished the series at 17.7 PPG on .587/.435/.533 shooting. Defensively, he largely held firm when not pulled away from the basket by Myles Turner. Had Giannis been around, a lot of those Indy drivers who got to the rim with such ease all series would have been thwarted. Though some will complain, I don’t see his cons coming close to outweighing his pros in the context of the series.

  237.
Bobby Portis’ resurgent Game 5 didn’t carry over enough.

  238.
While his numbers look good (8/17 from the field, 20 points, fifteen boards, six of the offensive variety), he was in the danger zone a couple times with the refs. He picked up a technical in a brief scrum near midcourt after a timeout early in the third. Immediately after he what felt very much like a frustration foul on offense, then next time up the floor missed two putback attempts before finally making the third on a tip (touch around the rim was a major issue for him this series). A few minutes later came the riskiest thing he did by jawing with the fans after an and-1:

  239.

  240.

  241.
Bobby Portis Jr. is having fun with the fan's pic.twitter.com/w7IPOXAq0n
— FastBreakPhenom (@FastBreakPhenom) May 3, 2024

  243.
  244.
  245.

  246.
I know he was embracing being the villain, but it felt like we were perilously close to another ejection the Bucks couldn’t afford. Portis was subbed out at the next dead ball and thankfully there were no more extracurriculars.

  247.
Pat Connaughton was again largely absent.

  248.
He had a couple ok games this series and a great Game 5, but in sixteen minutes gave the Bucks very little outside of one made three and five rebounds. Between him and Beasley combining for 2/10 from the floor, that’s sixteen and 23 minutes going to guys who weren’t providing much of anything on either end. Connaughton had a very nice series against Miami last spring (12 PPG, 47.8% from deep) that was lost to time, and I had some hope after Game 5 that Playoff Pat might be back. Alas, this wasn’t a good series for him and when put together with his regular season, it doesn’t look like he can be relied on for quality minutes anymore.

  249.
Bonus Bucks Bits

  250.

Patrick Beverley had a bad game (3/11 shooting for 6 points) but it was what he did off the court which was far more egregious. First there was this:

  251.

  252.

  253.
altercation between pat bev and pacers fans behind the bench pic.twitter.com/dfQpqSBv33
— Rob Perez (@WorldWideWob) May 3, 2024
  254.

  255.
  256.
  257.

  258.
Then this:

  259.

  260.

  261.
Patrick Beverly tells female reporter from ESPN that she cannot interview him since she doesn't subscribe to his podcast. pic.twitter.com/sRFHiZJaSK
— Alex Golden (@AlexGoldenNBA) May 3, 2024
  262.

  263.
  264.
  265.

  266.
I don’t know what those fans said to him, but no matter how bad it was, you absolutely cannot throw a ball at fans. No excuse for this, and he will rightfully face a suspension next season for it. What he did in the locker room to an ESPN producer who is just doing their job is almost worse. I always assumed this self-promotion was just a bit, but he’s actually being serious. This is absolute clown behavior more befitting of a clout-chasing influencer than an NBA player who doesn’t need the subscribers. Beverley needs to apologize to several people if he wants to maintain respect around the league (update: he did apologize to the producer, which is good, it just shouldn’t have taken being called out by hundreds of people on line to do it).

  267.

  268.
Dame finished with 28 points on 7/16 shooting (though just 4/12 from three), a very efficient night thanks to a perfect 10/10 at the charity stripe. Still, he appeared to not be at full strength after missing Games 4 and 5 with his nagging Achilles tendinitis, not driving the ball much (just one shot in the restricted area), and relegating him to a shooter. He was a game-time decision but felt well enough to go, and while he certainly played well, he did it on one healthy leg.

  269.
Khris Middleton went just 6/15 from the field for fourteen points in 38 minutes, but don’t get it twisted: he’s the reason this was a series. Just a legendary performance from a guy who faced criticism from a section of the fanbase all year long who thought he was cooked. Those people have been roundly proven wrong.

  270.
A.J. Green got a few minutes at the end of the first, but then didn't appear until garbage time. That’s also the only time we saw Andre Jackson Jr. My only real criticism of Doc Rivers this game was sticking with Connaughton and Beasley so deep into the game when Ajax could have really helped. Thanasis and Chris Livingston played too.

  271.
As mentioned, Jae Crowder did not. He hasn’t played since Game 4 as Doc rightfully identified he doesn’t have a future on this team given how much his defense and shooting has decayed.

  272.
Bench scoring was a crazy 29-1 in favor of the Pacers at one point. No, that’s not a typo. The final margin was 50-10, and four of the Bucks’ points came in garbage time.

  273.
Again, Indiana didn’t shoot very well from three at 13/40. Outside of Game 4, the Bucks weren’t too badly scorched from downtown despite leaving plenty of guys open. The problem was that the Bucks were a mere 7/27. That figure in terms of both percentage and attempts will hardly win you any games in the modern NBA.

  274.
Surprisingly, the Bucks had an edge in second-chance points and offensive rebounds 15-7, but those advantages were far outweighed by the Pacers’ predictable success on the break. They outscored Milwaukee 21-6 in transition and amassed 22 points off Milwaukee’s twelve turnovers.

  275.
Tyrese Haliburton is a demonstrative player, to say the least. Frontrunner? Some are talking. Personally, I like him as a player but I think he deserves this warning: for averaging just 16 PPG on .435/.296/.857 shooting this series, you’re crowing a lot. Opponents will notice this postseason and next year, including the ones in Milwaukee.

  276.
Last, let’s leave on a positive note with Dame’s thoughts on the year. Pardon the added emphasis for the naysayers, but this sounds like a guy who DEFINITELY WANTS TO BE HERE:

  277.

  278.

  279.

  280.
Dame reflects on the season and shares his excitement for Year 2 in Milwaukee. pic.twitter.com/wxtwOcPYkM
— Milwaukee Bucks (@Bucks) May 3, 2024
  281.

  282.
  283.
  284.

  285.
Thank you for following along with us in what was a turbulent season. The Bucks will likely have a busy offseason of player movement ahead between a first-round pick next month and free agency soon after. We’ll be with it every step of the way.

  307.
T.J. McConnell becomes playoff killer in season-ending loss for the Bucks

Despite the return of All-NBA guard Damian Lillard, it wasn’t enough as a big fourth quarter powered the Indiana Pacers past the Milwaukee Bucks to the second round, taking home a 120-98 win. Lillard was the leading scorer for the Bucks in his return, with 28 points, and shot 7-for-16 from the field. Obi Toppin and T.J. McConnell paced the Indy’s offense with a combined 41 points off the bench, while Tyrese Haliburton had 17 points, eight assists, and five rebounds.

  309.
Game Recap

  310.
It was a hot start for the Bucks to begin the frame, as they raced out to a 10-3 lead with Lillard scoring his first points since aggravating his lingering Achilles injury. However, after the Pacers were able to tie the game at the 6:02 mark of the quarter, Indiana went on a 19-8 run to end the quarter, with T.J. McConnell and the Pacers bench sparking them to a 33-24 lead heading into the second quarter.

  311.
The Bucks would respond with a 10-5 run to begin the second quarter to cut the Pacers lead back down to four. Indiana was able to respond to a 9-2 run to a lead of 11 points thanks to a wide-open Andrew Nembhard three-ball. The Bucks did get it as close at seven points down the stretch, thanks to Brook Lopez, but the Pacers responded again as they raced out to a 14-point lead, topped off with an alley-oop to Obi Toppin from Tyrese Haliburton. Lillard nailed two free-throws to cut the lead back to 12 heading into the locker room, 59-47.

  312.
Milwaukee would start the second half with another run to get it back within seven points and Myles Turner headed to the bench with four fouls in the game. Yet after a loose ball foul on Lopez, the Pacers responded once more to get their lead back to 12 forcing a timeout from Doc Rivers. The Bucks made one more strong push in the quarter, cutting the Pacers lead down to seven points, and seemed poised to cut it even further. Yet a turnover from Lopez on the next possession led to a fast break and-1 from Nembhard, and then a three from McConnell to push Indy’s lead back to 15 heading into the fourth, 93-78.

  313.
The Pacers put the nail in the coffin to begin the fourth quarter, with McConnell forcing a steal and then nailing a three. Later Pascal Siakam found Ben Sheppard for a three to all but end the Bucks season, as the make balloned Indiana’s lead to 20 with 8:07 to play. The Pacers would cruise to victory the rest of the way to take it by a final score of 120-98.

  314.
Stat That Stood Out

  315.
Indiana’s bench showed out, particularly Obi Toppin and T.J. McConnell. The Pacers outscored the Bucks bench 44-6, with only two made baskets from the Bucks bench (Beasley and Connaughton). Toppin finished with 21 points and eight rebounds, while McConnell ended his night with 20 points, nine assists, and four steals.

  404.
The vibes for the Milwaukee Bucks have gone through a complete 180 over the last 48 hours. After a dominant win on Tuesday at home in Game 5, 115-92, to stave off elimination, the Bucks potentially got some more good news this afternoon. Per the latest official NBA injury report, Bucks star Damian Lillard has been upgraded to questionable for Game 6.

  407.
On the NBA's official 12:30 p.m. EST injury report, Damian Lillard has been upgraded to questionable for Game 6 tonight in Indianapolis.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is still listed as doubtful. https://t.co/5GDoVxKwlL
— Eric Nehm (@eric_nehm) May 2, 2024

  411.

  412.
Lillard aggravated his Achilles injury in Game 3 and sat out the last two as the Bucks fell behind 3-2. Prior to his injury, Lillard was putting on an offensive clinic, harkening back to his masterful performances in the playoffs with the Portland Trail Blazers. The All-NBA guard put up 32.3 points, 5.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per contest in the first three games. We will have to wait and see if Lillard will officially make his return to the court tonight in Indianapolis, so stay locked to our Twitter page for any further updates on Lillard or Giannis.
