20.
Bruins fans will have reason to root for U.S. and Canada.

The two North American countries participating in the women’s soccer tournament at the Tokyo Olympics this summer revealed their rosters on Wednesday, and there’s UCLA Bruins representation on both of them.

 21.
Midfielder Sam Mewis and defender Abby Dahlkemper have been named to the U.S. women’s national team by head coach Vlatko Andonovski, while midfielder Jessie Fleming has been selected to the Canada women’s national team by head coach Bev Priestman.

 22.
While Fleming is the youngest of the trio, at 23, this will be her second Olympics, after she won bronze with Canada at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Meanwhile, Mewis and Dahlkemper, both 28, are reigning world champions with the United States after winning the World Cup in 2019, but this will be their first Olympic tournament and they will aim to add an Olympic medal — they hope it’s gold — to their personal trophy cabinets.

 23.
Both countries will play their group stage games on the same days, with Canada opening play against host Japan on July 21, and the U.S. facing Sweden the same day. The U.S. will face New Zealand on July 24 and Canada will take on Chile that day, while Canada will play Great Britain on July 27 and the U.S. will square off against Australia on that day. From there, both teams will aim to get to the medal rounds as the tournament progresses.

 43.
The Bruins currently have a top-25 class

The UCLA Bruins class of 2022 is shaping up quite nicely and is currently ranked second in the Pac-12 by 247Sports. With seven committed players, we take a comprehensive look at those players who are set to join UCLA this circuit as the summer starts to heat up.

 44.
4-star TE Jack Pedersen
IMG Academy, Bradenton, FL

 45.
At 6’4, 255 pounds, Pedersen plays for powerhouse IMG in south Florida. He ranks as the country’s fifth-best TE prospect and the 200th-ranked player overall by the 247 Composite. Pedersen transferred from Vista Murrieta this spring to IMG, and holds at least 21 other scholarship offers ahead of his senior year.

 46.
4-star TE Carsen Ryan
American Fork High School, American Fork, Utah

 47.
Another 6’4 tight end prospect, Ryan ranks as the state of Utah’s second-best player and 11th overall tight end by the 247Sports Composite. He holds another 16 offers at least, including in-state BYU and Utah State.

 48.

Broad shouldered, wide frame with projectable length. Well rounded tight end and physical blocker at line of scrimmage. Athletic pass-catcher for his size and ability to get open up the seam. Good ball skills and high-point concentration. Efficient red zone target who does well to box out defenders. Can get open underneath and pick up yards after catch. Could continue to improve overall fluidity as route runner. Potential multi-year starter at Power Five level and future NFL Draft Day 3 selection.

 49.
4-star ATH Clint Stephens
Inglewood High School, Inglewood, CA

 50.
Stephens is a 6’1, 188-pound athlete who projects to the secondary with the Bruins. He held offers for both his play as a receiver and in the secondary but ultimately chose UCLA to stay close to home.

 51.

“I had some great options but UCLA always felt like the best fit for me. It’s close to home but more then that, I like the coaches and how hard they recruited me. I have a strong comfort level there and I like the fit in the defense. I think the program is going in the right direction and I’m excited to get in there and continue to help change the culture over there.”

 52.
Stephens is the country’s 17th-ranked athlete and 21st-ranked player from the state of California.

 53.
3-star OLB Jalen Woods
St. John Bosco High School, Bellflower, CA

 54.
Woods held offers from Arizona State, Boston College and Miami, among others, when he pledged to UCLA. He stands 6’0, 210 pounds and projects as an outside pass-rusher if he can add a few pounds. He stands as the country’s 33rd-ranked OLB prospect and fittingly enough, the 33rd-best prospect in the state.

 55.
3-star WR AJ Jones
Colony High School, Ontario, CA

 56.
Jones is a 6’4, 195-pound receiver prospect with great hands. He had multiple offers from schools across the country but chose UCLA back in April. He’s currently listed as the nation’s 95th-ranked receiver and a top-50 player in the state of California by 247Sports.

 57.

Jones is a really intriguing jumbo receiver who could grow in to a hybrid tight end at the college level. He’s all of 6-5, 195 pounds with the kind of frame that could easily hold another 20-25 pounds without losing any of his athleticism. He runs well, uses his size to create separation and is very good in jump ball situations. He has strong hands, does a nice job high pointing the football and isn’t just long, he uses that length well and is a really tough match-up.

 58.
3-star CB Croix Stewart
Benicia High School, Benicia, CA

 59.
At 6’2, 187 pounds, Stewart has great size for a cornerback and ranks as the country’s 58th-best CB and the 54th-ranked player in California. He had offers from several Group of 5 schools when he announced his commitment to UCLA.

 60.
OLB DeAndre Gill
Kentwood High School, Kentwood, WA

 61.
A lesser-known prospect out of Washington, Gill is 6’5, 210 pounds and held offers from just FAU and UNLV. He compares to current Cincinnati Bengals OLB Joseph Ossai and projects out as a starter from 247Sports’ Brandon Huffman:

 62.

Gill is a long, athletic defender who can play a myriad of positions. He has lined up as an outside linebacker, a defensive end, an inline tight end and a flexed out receiver. While he has good hands and can be a red zone threat, his future is on defense, where he can drop into coverage against tight ends and running backs as an off-ball linebacker, while also standing on the edge and get around offensive tackles and into the backfield as a rush linebacker. Gill has tremendous ball skills with his length and hands a force in pass coverage. Has a frame that could add more weight but is light on his feet and really agile in coverage.

 80.

 81.
 82.
Odighizuwa could absolutely see some serious time in 2021

The UCLA Bruins weren’t as prominent during last month’s 2021 NFL Draft as maybe they had been in previous years, but with Osa Odighizuwa’s selection to the Dallas Cowboys in the third round, Odighizuwa could be in line early to make an impact during his rookie season.

 83.
Odighizuwa was selected with the 75th pick overall, the 11th pick of the third round by Dallas. He was the first Bruin to be selected and the fourth Pac-12 defensive player to be selected in the draft, following Joe Tryon, Jevon Holland and Levi Onwuzurike.

 84.
He also marked the fifth defensive tackle taken in the 2021 Draft. Odighizuwa enters the 2021 NFL season after earning First-Team All-Pac-12 honors a year ago and is in line to earn playing time early.

 85.
Currently, the Cowboys depth chart sports All-Pro Demarcus Lawrence along the edge with a cast of unproven youngsters at seemingly every other position.

 86.
Trysten Hill, a 2019 second-rounder, has not entrenched himself as the long-term solution at defensive tackle for Dallas and alongside Hill stands 2020 third-round pick Neville Gallimore and Carlos Watkins, a fourth-round pick by the Houston Texans in 2017.

 87.
There is a strong chance that after a great performance at the 2021 Senior Bowl and his place along the defensive line, Odighizuwa should see some early playing time with the Cowboys. And we know he should absolutely make an impact.

 88.

 89.
And don’t just take it from me. A former scout told 247Sports that Odighizuwa could prove to be the best pick by the Cowboys this draft.

 90.

“Micah Parsons is a freak, so I’ll put him up there as their most talented guy, but I’m telling ya we might be looking back three or four years from now and realize that Osa Odighizuwa was their best pick,” NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah said on the draft recap episode of the Move the Sticks podcast. “I mean when you look at guys, let’s just add it up right, say you haven’t watched a stitch of tape — I tell you he’s a little bit shorter but he’s got incredibly long arms, he plays really hard, and he’s got like a state wrestling champ background. Just knowing that we’re talking about with his size he’s going to have natural leverage.”

 91.
Yeah, that’s a glowing evaluation for the former Bruin!

 108.

 109.
 110.
It’s been awhile – what did I miss while I was gone?

It’s been a good bit of time since I’ve been here — and since you’ve heard from me. After 88 ‘business days’ and what equated to just over four months, yours truly is back at it. And what better way to start than dropping all the latest info on your UCLA Bruins as it happened over the weekend.

 111.
It was a busy past few months for me as we had a baby, adjusted to life with two, bought and moved into a new house while the real estate market is at ‘all-time levels of crazy’ as our realtor told us. The little man of ours is doing great, our daughter has adjusted nicely and my wife is a rockstar.

 112.
But that’s not what you came here for. You came here for the Bruins news, and so the Bruins news you shall have.

 113.
First things first, it was an honor to be able to watch the Bruins in the 2021 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament as a fan for a while. I know it ended on a sour note but for a few games there, it was downright exhilarating and I’m sorry I wasn’t here to cover it for you.

 114.
Mick and Co. will absolutely have some big aspirations this/next year, and I can’t wait to watch it unfold.

 115.
Here’s the news, as I saw it on my researching the Bruins to get back in the swing of things:

 116.
UCLA Softball honors seniors with mercy-rule victory

 117.
NCAA Regionals Round 1 are live in action –– follow along

 118.
It wasn’t quite a national championship, but the 43rd-ranked UCLA beach volleyball duo more than dismantled ‘expectations’

 119.
Women’s tennis moves on while the men’s team exits the tournament

 140.
National title hopeful Bruins fall in penalty shootout.

The UCLA Bruins women’s soccer team suffered heartbreak on Wednesday, as they were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament following a penalty shootout loss to Clemson in the third round.

 141.
The Bruins had reasonable aspirations for the national championship this season, but after a gritty last-minute win over Iowa in the second round, they went down against the Tigers as well and needed a late equalizer to even get hope of winning. This time, they couldn’t complete the comeback to flip the game.

 142.
It was a pretty quiet first half, with UCLA having better looks over the first 45, but neither team really getting a great chance on goal.

 143.
Clemson got the go-ahead goal in the 57th minute, Sammy Meredith slotting in her shot to give the Tigers the edge and putting UCLA on the ropes again in the NCAA Tournament.

 144.
Reilyn Turner had a great shot moments later, her sharp effort forcing a save from Clemson’s goalkeeper.

 145.
Mia Fishel nearly scored with 18 minutes to play, as she and Delanie Sheehan powered through in the box, Sheehan’s bloop header seemingly setting up Fishel perfectly, but her effort sailed over the goal.

 146.
But the Bruins got the equalizer with just over three minutes to play, through Olivia Athens’ header in the box.

 147.

 148.

 149.
RT if you've seen this story before! UCLA ties it up in the 87th minute after @OliviaAthens puts it in after @reilynturner hits the post.

https://t.co/tVgOKnyubp pic.twitter.com/gmKyN7Tp5R
— UCLA Women's Soccer (@UCLAWSoccer) May 6, 2021

 152.

 153.
The teams went to overtime after the 1-1 tie through regulation, and UCLA were the stronger team in the 1st OT, but they couldn’t get their golden goal. The 2nd overtime period was far more muddled, although a trip in the box that could have given UCLA a penalty went uncalled, and the game went to penalties.

 154.
Remarkably, both teams were perfect in the opening five rounds, and they went to sudden death in the 6th round tied 5-5 in the shootout. In the 6th round, Madelyn Desiano’s attempt was saved by Clemson goalkeeper Hensley Hancuff, and Clemson won 6-5 to advance in the tournament.

 161.
It’s a tough blow for the Bruins, who were nearly perfect on the season and were the No. 3 overall seed in the tournament. But it wasn’t meant to be in the end.

 186.

 187.
 188.
Freshman Reilyn Turner dragged Bruins to 3rd round.

Through about 84 minutes it looked as though UCLA were going to crash out of the 2021 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament Friday, the No. 3 overall seed losing to Iowa, which had one NCAA Tournament win in their history all-time, but a late brace from Reilyn Turner saved the day, as UCLA won 2-1 in the 2nd Round and will continue on in the competition.

 189.
Meike Ingles opened the scoring for Iowa in the opening minutes of the game, the Hawkeyes pressing the Bruins hard and finding the score they wanted to absorb UCLA’s attack and look to hold on.

 190.
Although Aislynn Crowder had a good look in the first half that went just wide, UCLA went into the break down 1-0, and alarm bells were not yet really ringing.

 191.
That changed in the 2nd half, with Iowa’s intensity causing UCLA some fits and the Bruins struggling to show why they were so dominant in the Pac-12 season. Even with head coach Amanda Cromwell making changes in her lineup, the spark didn’t seem like it was coming, and hearts were in mouths as it looked like UCLA were on the verge of being upset.

 192.
But Turner, the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, found a moment of luck with five minutes to play, to tie up the game. Her shot was hit right at Iowa goalkeeper Macy Enneking, who had had a good game up to that point, but the shot trickled through the GK’s hands and went into the back of the net.

 193.

 194.

 195.
Late-game-changer! @ReilynTurner does it again with the equalizer at 84:47! Aislynn Crowder with the assist makes it 1-1.

https://t.co/zIXrpeck5q#GoBruins pic.twitter.com/RNP32jEFLh
— UCLA Women's Soccer (@UCLAWSoccer) April 30, 2021
 196.

 197.
 198.

 199.
And Turner hit the winner in the final minute of regulation, her one-timer making no mistake as UCLA grabbed the vital 2-1 lead.

 200.

 201.

 202.
LEGENDARY. That pass by @JaceyPederson followed by the game-winner by @reilynturner! What a comeback by UCLA!#GoBruins

Also how about @JaceyPederson's pass to pic.twitter.com/opnafDL9Ax
— UCLA Women's Soccer (@UCLAWSoccer) April 30, 2021
 203.

 204.
 205.

 206.
To say this game should be a wake-up call for UCLA would be an understatement. Iowa struggled badly in their Big Ten season, only got to the NCAA Tournament from their Big Ten Tourney run, and they put UCLA, who have national title aspirations, on the ropes. But all’s well that ends well for the Bruins, who indeed move on and will play the winner of the Rutgers-Clemson clash on Wednesday.

 227.
The No. 3 Bruins will face the winner of the Iowa-Campbell match that will take place Tuesday, with UCLA’s game scheduled for next Friday.

 228.
UCLA is coming off a stellar regular season, losing just one time en route to the Pac-12 season crown. Head coach Amanda Cromwell was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year for her work, and a slew of players received regular season honors. Delanie Sheehan was Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year, Lauren Brzykcy was Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year and Reilyn Turner was Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.

 233.
 234.

 235.
In addition to Sheehan, Brzykcy and Turner on the All-Pac-12 First Team, Mia Fishel and Karina Rodriguez also received that honor, while Marley Canales was named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team. Three Bruins were named to the All-Freshman Team: Turner, Sunshine Fontes and Kaila Novak.

 236.
Needless to say, expectations are high for the Bruins heading into the NCAA Tournament. With this year’s field the national champion will need to win five games if they get a first-round bye, and UCLA hope they can do just that this season. Best of luck to Cromwell’s team as they prepare for what’s hopefully a deep run.

 264.
Onyenwere was a standout for the Bruins, a Third-team All-American selection from the USBWA and AP in her junior and senior seasons, as well as an All-Pac-12 selection for her final three seasons. The fourth-highest scorer in UCLA history, she averaged 19.1 points in 2020-21, helping the Bruins to a 2021 NCAA Tournament appearance to cap off her college career.

After a terrific NCAA career, in which her game developed and blossomed, her versatility and ability to play a few different roles should help her in her quest to play in the WNBA, hopefully for a long time. Congrats to Michaela on the selection and best of luck with the Liberty.
