20.
Thank you all for the memories

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Vox Media has decided to go in another direction and Cardiac Hill will no longer be under the SB Nation brand. Those of us apart of the Cardiac Hill staff would like to send our final message as part of the SB Nation umbrella.

 23.
It was on my birthday last year in October that we got to officially get the site up and running again after the stretch of it being dormant and it was easily the best year for me in the sports journalism world. Since my introduction to the community you all have welcomed me with open arms and it has been fun interacting with you over the last year. Being able to be on location covering Pitt athletics was always a personal dream of mine and I am thankful to have been able to experience that. From the Pitt fans and fellow journalists I have met along the way those are memories I will take with more forever.

 24.
Some days it might have been overwhelming, managing a sports website while also working a full-time job as a retail manager and being a father but the rewarding experiences made everything worthwhile and fulfilling. To all of those that have supported and tuned in to Cardiac Hill and interacted with us I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart. We will explore all options while we process this and see what is best for us going forward but no matter what it has been an honor. It started covering the rollercoaster of a football season that saw the Panthers carry their momentum to a thrilling Sun Bowl victory over UCLA. Covering the best Pitt men’s basketball season in a long time including being in person when the Panthers stunned the UNC crowd in Chapel Hill en route to their first tournament appearance in years, Being able to talk about these moments with each of you was the best part of it.

 25.
So again thank you, this wouldn’t have been the experience it was without every one of you. As always, Hail 2 Pitt.

 26.

 27.
Wyatt VanDyke

 28.
After a few years of bouncing around the internet, writing wherever I could, I reached out to Michael to see if there was space at Cardiac Hill for me. I’ll fully admit I did not grow up a Pitt fan, but after transferring colleges and moving from Iowa out here to Pittsburgh, I saw an opportunity with Cardiac Hill to entrench myself in a sports community that I knew little about. It’s about a year removed from that email to Michael now, and I’m so thankful for everything that’s happened in the time since.

 29.
I’m hooked now, a devout Panther fan when it comes specifically to volleyball and men’s basketball. This would’ve been my first season as a credentialed member covering football, and I’m sure the affinity would’ve followed there as well.

 30.
Pittsburgh as a city, and as a university community, is an incredible place. In two years it’s transformed from a foreign place to the home I had been seeking for 20 years prior. Cardiac Hill played a big part in that, and I’m so thankful for the opportunities I’ve had as a result of my time here.

 31.
From games at the Pete to the First Four in Dayton, the experiences I’ve had would not be possible without the help of the other two who helped bring back this website from dormancy, and those who read our work. Here’s to hoping that we can find some way to keep bringing you Pitt coverage! Thanks again.

 32.
Jordan Opperman

 33.
Well, it’s been an enjoyable ride. I am thankful for the opportunity to write off and on for Cardiac Hill for the last few years. It was an exciting time to be able to share my love of Pitt sports with all of you. It gave me such joy in coming up with post ideas, tracking down old players overseas, and covering games at the Pete. It’s been so much fun working with Wyatt and Michael the last year.

 34.
Thank you for all the kind words here and on Twitter. It means a lot to see the stories from all of you about reading Cardiac Hill as a kid, in college, before work, etc. And a special thank you to Anson for all the amazing work he did building this site up from nothing. I am happy we were able to continue his legacy through some amazing moments, the ACC Football championship, return to March Madness, several final four appearances, and many more. Take care and

 35.
Hail to Pitt, I guess, right?

 62.
Clemson and FSU look to be the darlings of the conference, ranked first and second respectively, in what could be both programs’ last year in the ACC. Also ahead of Pitt are UNC and NC State, with a handful of first-place votes sent UNC’s way. A lone ACC media member is a staunch NC State believer, as they received a singular first-place vote. Miami, a consistent beneficiary of preseason overrating, rounds out the top five.

 63.
The ACC is doing away with divisions beginning this season, likely making Pitt’s road to an ACC championship game tougher than it would have been last year.

 96.
Pitt in the virtual pros, Madden ratings edition

 97.

 98.

 100.
 101.

 102.
 103.
Where some former Panthers rank in the games ratings

EA Sports have finally completed ratings week for their latest installment of the Madden franchise. The Pittsburgh Panthers have plenty of representation in this year’s game thanks to having a consistent pipeline into the NFL. So let’s take a look at where some of these Pitt alumni ended up from a historic moment for Aaron Donald to this new rookie class.

 104.
AARON DONALD - 99 OVR

 105.
So let’s start with one of the most dominant players in the NFL regardless of position. Aaron Donald comes in with his 7th 99 overall rating in his Madden tenure giving him the most 99 overall distinctions in Madden history. The previous record for 99s was Peyton Manning who held the rating six times in his career. Aaron Donald has been a 99 every year since 2018 and previously was a 98 overall in Madden 17. The former Pitt Panther is the only player in the game with 99 overall strength and sports 99 power moves to pair with 97 block shed, making him one of the most feared defensive players in the game.

 106.

 107.

 108.
Most appearances in Madden history

Welcome back @AaronDonald97 #99Club #Madden24 pic.twitter.com/tXUAvgmug2
— Madden NFL 24 (@EAMaddenNFL) July 18, 2023
 109.

 110.
 111.

 112.
KENNY PICKETT - 73 OVR

 113.
The NFL is a quarterback-driven league and Kenny Pickett comes in tied for 25th in the ratings amongst the league’s signal callers. For comparison, he is tied with Brock Purdy and the number two pick in this year’s draft C.J. Stroud. While the 87 throw power will leave a little to be desired for those taking control of the Steelers in play now or franchise mode, Pickett does have 88 short accuracy and 81 medium accuracy to pair with 84 throw under pressure. So he does have the tools for growth in franchise mode.

 114.
THE REST OF THE VETERANS

 115.
The Pitt Panthers have some solid representation from the rest of the veterans starting with Tyler Boyd from the Cincinnati Bengals. A steady presence in the slot over the last seven seasons, Boyd comes in at an 82 overall. The wide receiver has been a reliable option for Andy Dalton and Joe Burrow throughout his career which is showcased by his 96 catch rating.

 116.
Brian O’Neil has continued to carve out a spot among the game’s best right tackles and comes in at 86 overall for the Minnesota Vikings. The rating makes him tied for the third-best in the game with Penei Sewell and trails only Ryan Ramcyzk and Lane Johnson in his position. His impressive 77-speed rating is tied for the highest among right tackles to pair with an 88 overall pass block and 85 overall run block rating respectively.

 117.
James Connor continues to come in as the lead back for the Arizona Cardinals at 77 overall. With an 88 carrying rating to pair with mid 80’s ratings for most important running back ratings, Connor is a reliable backfield option even if speed has never been a part of his game coming in at 87 in that rating.

 118.
Jordan Whitehead is part of an extremely talented secondary with the New York Jets and comes in at 79 overall. With an 80-zone coverage to pair along with an 89 overall hit power, Whitehead brings some heavy heating for gang green at the strong safety position.

 119.
Speaking of talented secondaries, Avonte Maddox still has a big role in a Philadelphia Eagle’s secondary coming off a Super Bowl run. Coming in at 79 overall with a 92 speed gives plenty of coverage in nickel packages even with 79 zone coverage and 77 man coverage stats.

 120.
Other notable ratings include

 121.
Damar Hamlin - 66 overall

 122.
Dane Jackson - 73 overall

 123.
Damarii Mathis - 72 overall

 124.
K’Waun Williams - 76 overall

 125.
Patrick Jones II - 69 overall

 126.
Jason Pinnock - 68 overall

 127.
Rashad Weaver - 67 overall

 128.
THE ROOKIE CLASS

 129.
Many of the players coming in will finally see their dream of being in one of their favorite video games come true. Let’s take a look at where the Pitt 2023 rookie class comes in for their Madden ratings.

 130.
Calijah Kancey is the highlight of the class as a first-round pick for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The consensus All-American starts the game at 73 overall. With 83 speed to pair along with 91 acceleration, Kancey will have a chance to be a disruptive force in the game and will be a target for those playing franchise mode.

 131.
Jordan Addison will continue to be a debate on if he should be claimed with Pittsburgh or USC but we will include him here. Addison comes in with 89 speed and 82 catching with a 76 overall rating. He is the 3rd highest-rated wide receiver from the rookie class trailing Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Zay Flowers respectively.

 132.
Israel Abanikanda was the star of the Pitt offense last season and even though he joins a crowded New York Jets backfield when all are healthy should still be plenty of fun in Madden. While he comes in at a 69 overall, Abanikanda’s 92 speed and 90 acceleration ratings will give him plenty of opportunities to see the field on the virtual gridiron.

 133.
OTHER NOTABLE ROOKIE RATINGS

 134.
Carter Warren - 66 overall

 135.
SirVocea Dennis - 67 overall

 136.
Erick Hallett II - 66 overall

 137.
Brandon Hill - 65 overall

 138.
Undrafted free agents are not currently in Madden so look for them to be added to the game after roster cuts where some may end up in the free agents list or with their respective rosters. There will be no shortage of representation on the virtual gridiron for the Pittsburgh Panthers so grab your favorite beverage on August 18th and dominate on the gridiron with your favorite alumni.

 165.
Cyprus is an island country located in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. AEL plays in the top division and the club has quite the history. The club nicknamed “The Queen” holds the record for the number of national championships and Super Cups won. It is the only basketball club in Cyprus to have ever clinched a European title, having won the FIBA Regional Challenge Cup in 2003. Their last championship was in the 2006/07 season and was their fifth in a row before dissolving in 2013 for economic reasons.

 166.
Cummings played this summer at Team New York in Eurobasket Summer League in Las Vegas. In 34 ESL games, he averaged 11.3ppg and 4.8apg which almost identically matches the 11.1ppg and 4.8apg Cummings averaged in his lone season in Pittsburgh. A leader on the floor for the Panthers, the 6-foot guard helped spark the most successful Pitt season in the Jeff Capel era while leading the team to the NCAA tournament for the first time in seven seasons.

 185.
 186.
Pitt coach’s ranking does not change from 2022 list.

Each year the folks at CBS Sports release a ranking of all the P5 football coaches. Despite another successful season, Narduzzi did not move up in the rankings, staying at number 6. Here’s what they had to say:

 187.
“Pat Narduzzi (29 overall): Narduzzi lost a Heisman finalist at quarterback, had to cycle through signal-callers due to various injury issues in 2022 and still managed to win eight regular-season games — including a bowl victory over UCLA. This came a year after he led the Panthers to their first ACC championship in program history and first New Year’s Six bowl appearance since 2004. Narduzzi has just one losing season on his ledger as Pitt’s head coach. Last year: 6 in the ACC”

 188.
The full 2023 rankings in the ACC are as follows:

 189.

 190.
Dabo Swinney - Clemson (3rd overall)

 191.
Dave Clawson - Wake Forest (15th)

 192.
Mike Norvell - Florida State (19th)

 193.
Mack Brown - UNC (22nd)

 194.
Dave Doeren - NC State (25th)

 195.
Pat Narduzzi - Pitt (29th)

 196.
Jeff Brohm - Louisville (33rd)

 197.
Mario Cristobal - Miami (39th)

 198.
Mike Elko - Duke (44th)

 199.
Dino Babers - Syracuse (53rd)

 200.
Jeff Hafley - Boston College (60th)

 201.
Brent Key - Georgia Tech (63rd)

 202.
Tony Elliott - Virginia (66th)

 203.
Brent Pry - Virginia Tech (67th)

 204.

 205.
The only significant change in the voting was Norvell made a big jump after FSU’s 10 win season, and Cristobal fell after Miami’s disappointing campaign.

 206.
Sports fans love to rank things, and power rankings and polls posts are always high traffic. I was curious about how CBS put together these rankings from year to year to try and see if any patterns emerged. I’m sure the voters have changed over the years, but the only significant thing they mentioned is that generally unproven and first year head coaches are put near the bottom. I went back and looked at their lists for the past 9 seasons and here are Narduzzi’s overall rankings.

 207.
2015 - 63rd

 208.
2016 - 40th

 209.
2017 - 43rd

 210.
2018 - 51st

 211.
2019 - 46th

 212.
2020 - 40th

 213.
2021 - 31st

 214.
2022 - 27th

 215.
2023 - 29th

 216.
Despite being the most consistent non-Clemson program in the ACC, Narduzzi has yet to break into the top 5 in the conference. This is the third consecutive season they have him at number 6. I wanted to see how the rankings change so I looked at the last five specifically. Here is a table of the polls. The team record in each cell reflects their record that year to see how their rankings played out that season. If the cell is highlighted in green, their ranking rose from the previous season, red, they fell, gray it was the same. I also used green if an incoming coach was ranked higher than the previous coach and vice versa.

 217.

 218.
 219.

 220.
Some highlights:

 221.

 222.
In 2019 Mack Brown went 7-6 and moved up 5 spots

 223.
Narduzzi won the ACC championship by 24 points and did not move in the rankings the next season

 224.
Louisville went 6-7 in 2021 and moved up 3 spots

 225.
Wake Forest went 4-5 in 2020 and moved up 3 spots

 226.
Over the past 5 seasons (2023 has no data though obviously) 28 coaches have been placed higher than Narduzzi in a season’s ranking. He’s led Pitt to a better record the following season than 19 of them and had identical records with 4. Removing Dabo, only twice has an ACC coach been ranked higher than Narduzzi and backed it up that season. Mack Brown went 8-4 to Pitt’s 6-5 in 2020 and Bronco Mendenhall went 9-5 to Pitt’s 8-5 in 2019.

 227.

 228.
In general, voters seem to reward coaches having success at lesser-known programs (e.g. Clawson) but they also reward coaches at name-brand schools for having one good season (e.g. Norvell). Pitt doesn’t fit into either of those categories so their consistency is ignored.

 229.
Oh well. They’ll just keep stacking ACC wins, year after year.

 230.
Hail to Pitt.

Former West Virginia guard Joe Toussaint has Pitt in his final three, joining Kansas State and Texas Tech according to Joe Tipton of On3.

 321.
Toussaint is from Brooklyn, New York, and spent his first three college seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes. Toussaint transferred to Morgantown and put together his best season averaging 9.4 points per game coming off the bench. After Bob Huggins resigned after being arrested for a DUI, Toussaint entered the transfer portal for a fresh start.

 322.
Pitt had an up-close view of Toussaint in what ended up being an embarrassing loss and coincidentally one of the best games of the season for the West Virginia guard. Toussaint dropped 18 points on the Panthers to go along with 5 assists and four rebounds.

 323.
Toussaint would be a boost to the depth of the guard room coming off the losses of Nelly Cummings, Nike Sibande, and Greg Elliott. The room added Rhode Island transfer Ishmael Leggett to go along with incoming freshman Jaland Lowe and redshirt freshman Dior Johnson. Toussaint will make his commitment on the Fourth of July.
