20.
Did you have a favorite play from the spring game?

I went to the spring game with my sons and my brother. For my youngest it was his first football game at Memorial Stadium and it was a great time. The weather was perfect and it was a game day atmosphere without the opposing fans that my oldest had to deal with at his first game.

  21.
At one point in the game my oldest marveled in the fact that Dylan Riaola threw a long pass to Jaylen Lloyd that seemed to “fall right into his hands.” “He wasn’t even looking for it.” And then he said, “we should just do that everytime.” I agreed that it would be ideal if we could. This is the pass he was referring to in case you haven’t already seen it a million times:

  33.
The Husker Alumni Association in Chicago has an upcoming scholarship fundraiser event on May 2nd. Part of the event will be not only networking with fellow Huskers but also Sean Callahan discussing the spring game and upcoming fall season. In addition they will have a silent auction to enhance the fundraiser with some items that are pretty cool - autographed football & volleyballs along with a pair of game tickets. 69.
How about them quarterbacks in the spring game? Plus, which undrafted Husker has the best chance to make an NFL roster?

It was a busy weekend to be a Husker fan.

  70.
Or a weather watcher.

  71.
Nasty weather made its way through the southeast part of Nebraska on Friday. One of the tornadoes came within a mile of the Ranchhands’ house in Lincoln. Many others were not so lucky and took a direct hit.

  72.
About 12 years ago, a tornado hit our house, causing significant damage. It was not enough to force us to move out while making repairs, but it was a long time in getting everything back to normal. My heart aches for everyone facing that and much worse right now.

  73.
We were fortunate to have a lot of friends and family help us get everything cleaned up and back to normal. I hope the same for everyone affected.

Here are four takeaways from the afternoon:

  91.
Nebraska Football 2024 Spring Game: Three Husker Standouts, Two Questions and One Prediction News - Corn Nation
Congratulations Husker fans. Your team won and your team lost.

  92.
That is, unless you were pulling for the White team then you won 25-21. If you were pulling for team Red then you are a loser. Sorry,...

  93.
NFL Draft

  94.
No Huskers were drafted this year.

  95.
FIRE EVERYONE!!!

  96.
(or blame it on Scott Frost)

  97.
Several Huskers did sign undrafted free agent (UDFA) deals with teams. Who do you think has the best chance to stick on a roster?

  98.
I am definitely biased, but I’m going with Omar Brown signing with the Broncos. Denver needs some safety depth and they have a long track record of having UDFA players make the 53 man roster. Plus, they gave him the largest guaranteed contract of their UDFAs.

  144.
Husker softball likely saw their NCAA tournament chances slip away this weekend. They lost the Friday game 6-5 to Northwestern and then lost the first Saturday game 8-1. Nebraska was leading 5-0 when the second Saturday game was suspended in the fourth inning.

  145.
Attempts to finish the game on Sunday were for naught as lightning delays kept pushing potential start times back and the Wildcats had to head for home. That third game was not long enough to become official.

  169.
Nebraska Run Rules Iowa in Game 2 of the series, but Brody Brecht stops the potential sweep in its tracks.

With all the rough weather in Nebraska over the weekend, Nebraska and Iowa had to get creative to try and get their baseball series in. Friday, they were able to get in the game in the aftermath of the storm that won’t soon be forgotten. Then Saturday, the teams got in the majority of game 2 before lightning and rain intervened. So the teams finished up game 2 on Sunday (after yet another lengthy weather delay), before finishing up the final game 45 minutes later.

  170.
Completion of Game 2

  171.
The teams had set a goal of starting the remainder of the 2nd game of the series at 11am, but the constant rain and lightning didn’t allow them to actually take the field until around 3pm. After allowing Iowa to get a run in the top of the 6th, the Nebraska offense picked up exactly where it left off. Ty Stone walked in the bottom of the inning, followed by Josh Caron hitting the ball so hard on a stand up double that even the not so fleet of foot Stone was able to score all the way from first base. That made it 9-2 Huskers.

  172.
In the 7th, Caleb Clark put up a 1-2-3 inning (with help from Dylan Carey…), and then the offense took over again.

  178.
  179.

  180.
With 1 out, Josh Overbeek unloaded on a 2-0 fastball and sent a no-doubter over the right field fence, complete with a stellar bat flip! Rhett Stokes then hit a double, and scored on a hard hit 2 out single from Ty Stone. After loading the bases, Iowa walked in a run to make it 12-2, and with it being a Sunday, the 10 run rule came into effect, ending the game with a Husker walk off win, and series win over the Hawkeyes!

  186.
  187.

  188.
Series Finale

  189.
Not a lot went right for Nebraska in Game 3. With Iowa struggling with its starting rotation all season, Brody Brecht had found himself starting on Sunday the previous week and after he won the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, Iowa kept him there. And the top MLB draft prospect in the conference made another performance worth of a weekly honor.

  190.
The Husker offense stalled completely while he was in there for 7 innings, striking out 11 times on either his 100mph fastball or wipe out slider. Nebraska was able to get their only run of the day in the 4th inning, down 2-0. Ty Stone connected with one of the 100 mph fastballs and sent it to the deepest part of the park for a double, and moving Riley Silva to 3rd base in the process. Josh Caron than hit a deep sac fly to right field to bring Silva in, cutting the lead to 2-1.

  191.
Iowa would answer right back in the 5th with another solo home run, and then plate a run in the 6th on a wild pitch to extend their lead to 4-1. Nebraska hoped to finally get some momentum going when Iowa finally went to the bullpen in the 8th, but reliever Jack Young would have none of it, striking out the first 4 Huskers he faced, before inducing a ground out and fly out to end the game with a 4-1 Iowa salvaged victory.

  192.
Nebraska finished the week in a 3 way tie for 3rd in the Big Ten standings at 10-5. They will next be on the field back in Omaha on Tuesday to try and salvage a game in the Creighton season series, with first pitch coming at 6pm.

  234.
Nick King/Lansing State Journal / USA TODAY NETWORK

  235.

  236.
  237.
Congratulations Husker fans. Your team won and your team lost.

  238.
That is, unless you were pulling for the White team then you won 25-21. If you were pulling for team Red then you are a loser.

  239.
Sorry, but these are the facts.

  240.
Anyways, on a day that was hard to get excited and put too much emphasis on a scrimmage I wanted to throw out a list of three standouts, two questions I had going into the summer and a prediction.

  241.
Regarding the three standouts, as you will see they are all newcomers and are all on offense. Part of this is because the new shiny toys are always more exciting and when it comes to these types of scrimmages is that it is hard to really get excited to watch a defensive battle.

  242.
Overall, the roster looks more explosive and physically bigger. On the other hand Nebraska could have lost two potential starters to injuries in wide receiver Demitrius Bell and defensive back Blye Hill.

  243.
We all want to make some declarations when it comes to the quarterback room but one thing I would say is that the room looks much better and part of that is attributable to the two freshmen (Dylan Raiola and Daniel Kaelin) but I also think a big part of that is because of Heinrich Haarberg as well.

  244.
A lot can happen from today until the first game in the fall. Some players will leave. I assume Nebraska might look to add a player or two if they can make a difference.

  245.
So with that said, here is the 3-2-1.

  246.

  247.
Three Husker Standouts

  248.
Isaiah Neyor

  249.
Admittedly, I had not memorized the roster numbers at this point and the names were not on the backs of the jerseys so there was a play early in the first spring game where a #18 caught the ball and ran down the sideline. There were several flag thrown and the play came back but I couldn’t help but ask, “who the heck is that?”

  250.
Well through the magic of the internet and the announcers on the television, I learned that it was Isaiah Neyor. He is one of those athletes that looks like he isn’t even trying but he just runs by people.

  251.
I am absolutely not saying he is Randy Moss but that is the best example I can think of right now. He looks like he isn’t even trying but he just runs by people like they have cement in their shoes.

  252.
That is what I thought of when I saw Neyor run with the ball. I think that’s a good sign.

  253.

  254.

  255.
Daniel Kaelin hits Isaiah Neyor on first down after the change of Neyor. Neyor, the Texas transfer, glides when he's got the ball. He's absolutely going to be a weapon for Nebraska in the fall.
— Mitch Sherman (@mitchsherman) April 27, 2024
  256.

  257.
  258.
  259.

  260.

  261.

  262.
Isaiah Neyor has that giddy-up gear when he gets the ball.
— Brian Christopherson (@Husker247BC) April 27, 2024
  263.

  264.
  265.
  266.

  267.

  268.
Jacory Barney Jr.

  269.
Probably the best light hearted moment was on the kick-off return where Jacory Barney would have taken it to the house if he did not confuse Tristan Alvano (the kicker) as somebody who was coming over to celebrate instead of tackle him.

  270.
Which is what Tristan Alvano did, and actually didn’t look too bad doing that as well.

  271.
But it’s a combination of that return and the 41 yard touchdown pass he received from Haarberg that makes me think he has a great shot to be a weapon for this team as a true freshman.

  272.
Being roommates with Dylan Raiola sure doesn’t hurt.

  273.

  282.
Jacory Barney only gets tackled by a kicker because he thought the kicker was on his team. Limited grief for that.
— Brian Christopherson (@Husker247BC) April 27, 2024

  288.
Dante Dowdell

  289.
Another thing that stood out to me was the physical running game and who is #23? Well like I said above, I did not memorize the roster, and then I noticed it was the transfer from Oregon in Dante Dowdell.

  290.
Dowdell had 76 rushing yards on 7 carries with a big touchdown run that Matt Rhule was asked about after the scrimmage.

  291.
“Today, I saw a burst in him. I haven’t seen that long run from him in the other scrimmages. Maybe it was blocked better, maybe Tony (White) didn’t blitz as much today. I didn’t tell Tony what he could or couldn’t do. It was great to see that from Dante. He’s had a good spring, but you saw a burst. When I stand down there, you could see a level of acceleration into contact in that long run down the left sideline.”

  299.

  300.

  301.
Two Questions

  302.
Is the quarterback battle settled?

  303.
I think most people are assuming after watching the game and after reports this past week that it looks like Dylan Raiola is the leader in the quarterback room. We love to ooze over the new quarterback who is a five star.

  304.
Remember Harrison Beck? He isn’t Harrison Beck but still. Hopefully. Hopefully? Hopefully!

  305.
Whoever ends up starting for Nebraska against UTEP on August 31st, I just hope they take care of the ball.

  306.
Unless it is clear to the coaching staff that Dylan Raiola is the best of the bunch then I would have admit that I’m pulling for Heinrich Haarberg with his eight games of experience and 5-3 record.

  307.
Especially since he is, for the first time, getting a quarterback coach.

  308.
Is the coaching staff going to look for a veteran one year quarterback in the transfer portal? Or what position group would they be looking to add?

  309.
Before the spring season even happened and Chubba Purdy transferred, I was already thinking that with Dylan Raiola coming that getting a seasoned veteran quarterback for one season would be ideal for Nebraska.

  310.
I understand, why a kid would not want to come and take that job (Kyle McCord) especially if you struggle at the beginning and there is a five star quarterback waiting who’s dad happens to have his named etched on the flippin’ stadium.

  311.
I think if Matt Rhule would be open to the idea that he would have to have a transfer kind of all in his lap. It might not be worth messing with this room but if you told they had a veteran starter who knows how to win then I think the over-under for season wins going up by two.

  312.
As far as what other position group that they would be interested in?

  313.
I think you are always looking for defensive lineman - no matter what. However, the group that I think maybe they could take a gander at is the linebacking crew.

  314.

  315.
One Prediction

  316.
I am absolutely, 100% ready, to give my win/loss prediction.

  317.
Or not.

  318.
I think the easy prediction would be that Dylan Raiola will be the starting quarterback against UTEP.

  319.
So, I’ll go with this.

  320.
After the scrimmage yesterday, Jacory Barney said he will return a kick for a touchdown against Colorado. I believe him. That’s my prediction.

  321.

  322.

  323.

  344.
  345.
McDanel earns a bye into the World Team Trials final in June; Kody Routledge and Ethan DeLeon both placed and earned spots in the Trials challenge tournament

For the second year in a row, Camden McDanel is a U20 US Open Champion at 97 kg.

  346.
An incoming freshman for the Huskers, McDanel has spent the last year at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in the Early Accelerator Program while taking a grayshirt, delaying his college eligibility a year.

  347.
I’d say the year spent in Colorado was a good one. McDanel won a senior-level tournament overseas, fell one win short of making the Olympic Trials, and won a U20 World bronze medal. Now, he’s one step closer to getting back to the U20 Worlds in search of gold.

  348.
Besides McDanel, Nebraska saw 2025 commit Kody Routledge make it all the way to the final, while redshirt freshman Ethan DeLeon landed on the podium, earning a spot in the U20 World Team Trials challenge tournament — the winner of that tournament will then face the winner of this weekend’s tournament in a best-of-three final for the World Team spot.

  349.
U20 Division

  350.
Camden McDanel

  351.
4-0, 1st place

  352.
97 kg

  353.
The returning World medalist, McDanel was dominant in winning his second-straight U20 US Open stop sign, outscoring his opponents 39-2.

  354.
In the smallest bracket of the tournament, McDanel only wrestled one match on Friday. After a bye in the Round of 32, McDanel made quick work of his opponent in the next round, winning quickly via 12-0 technical superiority.

  355.
In Saturday’s quarterfinal round, McDanel took on Max Ramberg and it was much of the same as he won via 11-0 tech. In the semis, McDanel beat SDSU’s Thomas Dineen via 11-1 tech.

  356.
In the finals, McDanel took on Cole Mirasola, a product of Askren Wrestling Academy (coached by Ben and Max Askren) who’s going to Penn State. The third-ranked heavyweight in the country in high school, Mirasola and McDanel were on a collision course for a matchup in the finals.

  357.
In that match, McDanel was dominant, pushing the future Nittany Lion around for a controlled 5-1 decision win.

  363.
  364.

  365.
With the win, McDanel has a bye to the U20 World Team Trials best-of-three final in early June where he’ll face the winner of the challenge tournament.

  366.
Kody Routledge

  367.
5-1, 2nd place

  368.
70 kg

  369.
A former Fargo champion, Routledge turned some heads this weekend in getting to the US Open final. A junior in high school in Oklahoma, Routledge is a blue-chip recruit in Nebraska’s 2025 class.

  370.
Routhledge won his first three matches on Friday, putting him in Saturday’s quarterfinal round. He won his first two matches via tech (10-0 and 12-2) before beating Isaias Jimenez out of Valiant Prep, one of the top high school wrestling programs in the country, 10-5 in the Round of 16.

  371.
In Saturday’s quarterfinal round, Routledge took on Hofstra’s Noah Tapia, winning the match 7-2. In the semis, Routledge faced Iowa commit Kael Voinovich and put it on him in an 11-0 tech in under 90 seconds, sending Routledge to the final.

  372.
In the final, Routledge took on PJ Duke, the #1-ranked 157-pounder in the country in high school who is going to Penn State. Routledge is ranked #7 at 157. Routledge made some nice attempts but was unable to get past the strength of Duke in a 10-0 loss via tech.

  373.
With the runner-up finish, Routledge will likely be the 1-seed at the Trials challenge tournament in June.

  374.
Ethan DeLeon

  375.
5-3, 6th place

  376.
79 kg

  377.
Sort of an unknown to Husker fans, DeLeon was a two-time Iowa state finalist. He made his name known on Friday when he rattled off four wins in a row to make it to the quarterfinal round. He won his first match via 10-0 tech before coming back in the second round for a 5-4 decision win. DeLeon then won a 15-5 tech before an 8-7 victory in the Round of 16.

  378.
In Saturday’s quarterfinal, DeLeon took on Nolan O’Boyle of North Carolina. Pulling off a comeback, DeLeon got the 10-6 win. In the semis, DeLeon took on Noah Mulvaney, an NCAA qualifier as a freshman at Bucknell. DeLeon lost to Mulvaney via 11-0 tech.

  379.
DeLeon then went on to fall in the consolation semis 11-0 and the 5th-place match 11-0.

  380.
Despite the semifinal slide, DeLeon firmly placed his name in the conversation at 174 pounds for this coming season with his 6th-place finish in Vegas.

  381.
Christopher Minto

  382.
3-2, Did not place

  383.
79 kg

  384.
This year’s Redshirt of the Year, Minto wrestled like it on Friday as he won three in a row to get into Saturday’s quarterfinal round. Minto won a 7-3 decision to start the tournament before winning via 12-0 tech in his second match.

  385.
In his Round of 16 match, Minto put together one of the most impressive comebacks I’ve seen when he took on Jordan Chapman out of New Jersey. Down 11-6 midway through the final period, Minto scored 7 unanswered points. After a pair of takedowns late, Minto found himself down 11-10 with two seconds remaining. Minto shot a low double off the whistle and was able to get the takedown before time expired. The opposing coaches challenged the call and lost, giving Minto his final point for the 13-11 win, advancing him to Saturday’s quarter.

  386.
In that quarter, Minto faced Mulvaney, similarly falling via 11-0 tech. Minto then lost a 7-5 decision to Myles Takats in the bloodround, falling one win short of placing on the podium.

  387.
Alan Koehler

  388.
5-2, Did not place

  389.
57 kg

  390.
On the first day of competition, Koehler won his first match 10-0 via tech before dropping his second match 12-4 to South Dakota State’s Daniel Guanajuato. Koehler went on to record three straight wins via tech in the consolations to close out the day — 11-0, 10-0 and 10-0. His final win of the day came against SDSU’s Brady Roark who beat Kael Lauridsen earlier in the tournament.

  391.
On Saturday, Koehler came back to win 7-5 against Gage Walker, putting him in the bloodround where he took on Garret Rinken, falling via 9-2 decision and just missing the podium.

  392.
Despite not qualifying for the U20 Trials, Koehler was impressive, especially in winning four matches in a row on the back side of the bracket.

  393.
Dominic Thebeau

  394.
4-2, Did not place

  395.
79kg

  396.
On Friday, Thebeau won his first match 6-0 before recording wins via tech in his next two matches — 10-0 and 14-3. Thebeau then fell to Ohio State freshman starter Ryder Rogotzke 10-0 in the Round of 16.

  397.
Thebeau then got a 12-2 win in his first consolation match Friday night before taking on Kasey Ross out of Iowa on Saturday morning. Against Ross, Thebeau dropped the match via 10-0 tech.

  398.
It was a solid showing for Thebeau, especially the way he won his first three matches and got into the Round of 16. He’ll be a part of the competition at 174 pounds this year.

  399.
Cade Ziola

  400.
2-2, Did not place

  401.
86 kg

  402.
A junior at Omaha Skutt who’s committed to Nebraska’s 2025 recruiting class, Ziola started his tournament with a bang. In his first match against Ben Peterson, Ziola trailed 9-0 just 50 seconds in but battled back, scoring 11 unanswered points on the way to the 19-14 win. Ziola then won his next match via 11-0 tech.

  403.
In the Round of 16, Ziola fell to U17 World medalist Max McEnelly of Minnesota 11-0. A four-time state champ in Minnesota with a high school record of 181-1, McEnelly went 15-0 as a redshirt this year for the Gophers — he was the #8 overall recruit in the class of 2023.

  404.
In his next match, Ziola fell to Kole Mulhauser via 11-0 tech, ending his tournament.

  405.
Kael Lauridsen

  406.
2-2, Did not place

  407.
57 kg

  408.
A four-time Nebraska state champ that’s been training at the Olympic Training Center, Lauridsen started his tournament with a 10-0 tech for the win. In his second match, he held a 9-0 lead against Brady Roark before the Jackrabbit stormed back for the 10-9 win, dropping Lauridsen to the consolations.

  409.
Lauridsen scored a 10-0 win via tech in his first consolation match but fell in his next match via 13-2 tech to Penn’s Max Gallagher, ending his tournament.

  410.
Hayden Mills

  411.
2-2, Did not place

  412.
57 kg

  413.
A 133-pounder for Nebraska, Mills dropped down to 57 kg (125 pounds) this weekend and did pretty well. Maybe this is a sign that he’ll drop to 125 pounds in college.

  414.
After losing a razor-thin 8-7 decision in his first match, Mills won his first consolation match 11-8 before scoring a 10-0 tech in the next round. Mills then fell to teammate Koehler via 11-0 tech, ending his tournament.

  415.
Cooper French

  416.
1-2, Did not place

  417.
79 kg

  418.
A three-time state champion out of Arizona, French dropped his first match in a high-scoring, back-and-forth 17-12 decision. French then won his first consolation match via 10-0 tech before getting pinned in his third match.

  419.
Jacob Licking

  420.
0-2, Did not place

  421.
74 kg

  422.
Coming off his redshirt season, Licking went 0-2 at his first U20 US Open. The Norfolk native dropped his first match 12-2 and lost his consolation match 13-1.

  439.
Probably a sight we better get used to this fall. | Scott Bruhn

  440.

  441.
  442.
There many stories but none bigger than fans’ first looks at Dylan Railoa. Yes, it was just the spring game, but he delivered.

Little time was wasted in showing off the arm of Dylan Railoa as he grooved a short pass to Thomas Fidone who rumbled with it for a 15 yard gain. After rushes by Emmett Johnson and Raiola brought the ball to mid-field, Texas transfer Isaiah Neyor took off deep and Raiola let fly with a smooth throwing motion and a flick of his wrist. Neyor became tangled up drawing a PI flag and Raiola’s throw landed in the end zone approximately 65 yards from where he threw it.

  443.
It looked fairly effortless.

  444.
Four plays later, he dropped a dime over the coverage to Janiran Bonner in the right corner for a 16-yard TD, going 4-4 for 40 yards on the drive.

  445.
On his first drive of the 2nd quarter, he and Jalen Lloyd took the top off the defense when Lloyd got a step on his corner and Raiola hit him in stride for a 64-yard touchdown. When the half ended, he was 15-22 for 227 yards, 2 TD’s and a lone pick thrown through the hands of Demetrius Bell.

  446.
He played one more drive in the 3rd quarter where they mostly kept it on the ground, but his job was done. Head Coach Matt Rhule would inevitably talk about how all three quarterbacks looked good - and honestly, they did. After a slow start, Daniel Kaelin began connecting with the accuracy he displayed at Elite 11. And Heinrich Haarberg, while still not perfect, look much improved with cleaner mechanics.

  447.
But anyone with functional eyesight could see Railoa’s skill set was simply on a different level. Along with the arm strength, he showed off a deft touch of which many may not have been aware. And perhaps, more importantly, his body language, composure and command no the field appeared to belong to someone well beyond his 18 years.

  448.
Wide receiver true freshman-to-be, Jacori Barney, Jr. showed well with several grabs - including a 41-yard TD from Haarberg - and a 78-yard kickoff return before being tackled by kicker Tristan Alvano, whom he probably mistook for a teammate. He also scooped up a kickoff in the end zone and made the questionable decision to return it drawing the ire of Rhule up in the broadcast booth (“What was he thinking??”) as Big 10 analyst Kenny Bell laughed beside him.

  449.
Dante Dowdell and Johnson both looked impressive and when Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson are thrown in the mix come August, the running back room is setting up as a battleground for the lion’s share of carries come fall.

  450.
And shockingly, more accurate arms have revealed if one can get the ball in their hands, Nebraska has themselves multiple playmakers at wideout and tight end who can make some exciting things happen.

  451.
So all in all, the Spring Game has once again assured us all is well in Huskerland and the college football world will once again be our oyster. The only negative is we are already 1-1, so another loss likely bounces us from CFP contention.

  464.

  465.
I know it was a simple TE screen to start things off but how many times in the last 7 years has that pass flown over their heads?

  466.
Raiola isn’t Manning slow but I am ready to lay down a prop bet that a QB will not lead the team in rushing this season.

  467.
No one picking Emmett as having a shot at the starting RB job might be a mistake. He runs hard, and yes, he was doing it last year. Did we all forget?

  468.
Haarberg’s 45-yard toss to Barney was underthrown, but Jacori did a nice job of pulling up to snag it.

  469.
The 1 yd TD run by Dowdell makes me think we’ve found our short yardage back. And that’s just a bonus to what appears to solid skills reading holes and hitting the second level hard.

  470.
Let’s hope the Demetrius Bell and Blye Hill injuries heal before fall camp. Hill was on his way to starting and Bell had impressed in spring camp.

  471.
On his second drive of the 2nd quarter, Haarberg threw for 138 yards (two completions wiped out by penalties) which were highlighted by a 61-yard run and catch to Boerkircher followed by a 25-yard TD to Fidone a couple plays later. Amazing what some personalized coaching can do for guy, am I right?

  472.
Maurice Mazzuca had a couple nice runs today and showed off some moves as well. Will he crowd the RB competition further?

  473.
As the 2nd quarter wound down, Kaelin made a very nice toss on a deep out to Lloyd for 26 yards making a difficult throw look easy.

  474.
Following Dowdell’s 49-yd TD run, Raiola, on his last drive, threaded one final needle on a 2-pt conversion to Alex Bullock. Just hoping for incompletions over interceptions when watching the Husker passing game feels like it’s moving toward my rearview.

  475.
Watching linebacker Gage Stegner, the former Millard South QB and safety, is giving me John Bullock vibes like I got the last couple of spring games - an undersized LB out there wrecking some folks in April. If they add some weight to him like they did Bullock, don’t be surprised to see a blackshirt on him as well in a couple of years.

  482.
POST-GAME QUOTES

  483.
Matt Rhule on if the game was a summary of Dylan Raiola’s spring season
“That’s a great question. I don’t know how to answer that, to be honest with you. I don’t get tongue twisted very often. Dylan’s had a very good spring. The plays I liked – I was up doing the TV at one point – one where we kicked a field goal that we missed, you could see that he so badly wanted to throw the ball back across the middle of the field as he was scrambling and he didn’t. The one scramble probably ends in a sack, but he has two hands on the ball, he’s running. It’s going to be the little things with Dylan, not the big things. He’s got a great feel for the game, he’s got a big arm. He’s calm. It’s going to be the little things – protecting the football, taking three, managing the game. It just felt like he did a lot of those things. He hasn’t done all of them. He’s grown as the spring has gone on. He, like the rest of our players, had a chance today to just improve on what they did last week, and I thought, in a lot of ways, he did.”

  484.
On showcasing Jaylen Lloyd’s talent
“I think the thing with Jaylen is his ball skills just continue to improve. It’s really a credit to Marcus (Satterfield) and Garret (McGuire). They’ve introduced drills that I’ve always been against. Deep down, I’m just a d-line coach. They do pat and go and all these drills and I’m against them, and the guys have just bought in and gotten better and better and better. From the first scrimmage to this scrimmage, the ball skills, the catching of the football has just improved. I think Jaylen is one of the prime guys with that. It’s one thing when the guys have great speed, but when you’re a triple jumper and when you’re a long jumper – he has such athleticism and mobility. He can track balls, he’s loose, he can track it over his shoulder. He plays hard. When the quarterbacks get outside the pocket, he can turn up. To be honest with you, Dylan has the ability to get outside of the pocket and make those throws. Heinrich (Haarberg) can throw the ball 75 yards. So (Jaylen) has the feeling of ‘I can turn up on these plays.’ Danny (Kaelin) – I don’t know if you saw him get outside of the pocket and throw one downfield. He has a big-time arm and can do it as well. It’s contagious. Jaylen has been one of the most improved players on the team. His becoming a receiver is just growing exponentially.”

  485.
On Jacory Barney Jr.
“I felt bad for him. I think he thought the kicker was the same color jersey as him. I was watching that on tv. The kickoff return is hard to tell because it’s not live, but I watched the tv replay up there, and I think Koby (Bretz) grabbed his flag and that’s it. Jacory’s dynamic, and he’s tough. He’s still learning a lot. They jumped offsides, and he took off before the ball was snapped because he saw them jump offsides, so he’s really a smart player. He’s really, really competitive, really fast, and if he can bring just a little bit of that kick return dynamic to our team, that changes things. He can play all three spots because he is quick and fast and can catch the ball across the middle.”

  486.
On how Thomas Fidone is moving this spring
“He’s a pretty explosive guy. He’s four five. I think the biggest thing with Thomas is at the end of the season, I said to Thomas. I was like, ‘What a great fall we had,’ meaning him. Like us. We had. He’s like, ‘What do you mean?’ What I love about Thomas Fidone is he’s never happy. He’s never happy, and it’s because he wants to be great. He wants to be the best tight end in the world, and he’s always trying to get better, but my point was, coming off two ACL’s, to get through a spring, a fall camp and a season healthy, that’s what he needed because now, instead of rehabbing this winter, he’s lifting, and he’s in the 260 range at four five, with 35 inch arms, 34 inch arms. He’s a physical freak and he’s loyal. Every team in the country’s trying to get him to leave and go there, and he’s a Nebraska Cornhusker through and through. I love that guy, and I love his approach, and it’s so good for our players to see a guy who’s so obsessed with being great and never happy. But at the same time, to your point, he just had to have a true off-season. He just had to have weightlifting, where he’s not rehabbing, and now I think you’re starting to really see what he can do.”

  490.

  491.
On if Rhule came to the conclusion that they’re set on the quarterback position
“I would say we would always, always, always look for quarterbacks. If there’s a quarterback that comes along, we would always take another quarterback. I think we have our starter sitting in that room. Let me say that. I think we have three guys that we believe in, but if a young player comes along or a depth player comes along – I don’t go looking in the portal, but I’m also not stupid when things come across to us. Scott Fitterer was the GM when I was in Carolina. He used to say, from the Seahawks, “We’re in on every trade.” He just would explore everything, but I think we have quarterbacks capable of winning for us. I think the quarterback play’s significantly improved from last season, and that’s kind of where we’re at.”

  492.
On the plan for the next few days with the transfer portal deadline on May 1
“What I do at the end of every spring, is I have a team meeting on Monday, and then they meet with their position coach, then they all meet with me over the course of however many days. I’ll be available Monday, I’ll be available Tuesday. I’ve had so many guys already come and talk to me. As you can tell, there’s a lot of tampering going on in college football. I’ve had guys, like I said earlier in a press conference, guys showing me their phones. If a player is urgent and they’re trying to make a decision about going in the portal, then they’ll sign up early for their meeting with me. A lot of guys, most of the team is probably pretty set, they’ll sign up with me later in the week or next week. That’s kind of on them. We have our process, we meet with every single player, go through where they stand right now. We can’t make promises for the future. I think the biggest thing that I’d say is, wanting them to always understand – everyone is going to have your back, everyone is going to tell you what you want to hear when things are going well. When you’re one of the top players and they’re trying to get you into the portal, when you’re Demitrius (Bell) or Blye (Hill) and you’re laying there, and you have tears running down your face and you don’t know what’s going to happen to you, who has your back then? I’m an open, open, open book. We talk to every single guy regardless, but a guy who’s trying to make a decision on the portal, they can come talk to us. I wouldn’t forget that we do a great job here of graduating players. We don’t slow down graduations. If they’ve graduated, they can still go in the portal. In training camp, they can go in the portal. It’s kind of an open conversation the whole time. We’re going to leave here and recruit. We’re going to recruit tomorrow and then go honor the student-athletes at Night at the Lied tomorrow night, then Monday/Tuesday, we’ll start the process.”

  493.
On Dante Dowdell today
“Today, I saw a burst in him. I haven’t seen that long run from him in the other scrimmages. Maybe it was blocked better, maybe Tony (White) didn’t blitz as much today. I didn’t tell Tony what he could or couldn’t do. It was great to see that from Dante. He’s had a good spring, but you saw a burst. When I stand down there, you could see a level of acceleration into contact in that long run down the left sideline. Some really good things. You have a pretty deep running back room. You saw Maurice Mazzccua – I saw a spin move that he made that was a fantastic run. Big fan of Kenneth Williams. I think Kenneth is a guy that’s going to play here in some different ways. Dante, Emmett (Johnson) – I kind of sidelined Emmett at one point, said ‘that’s enough from you.’ During practice this week, Rahmir (Johnson) took a lot of reps in one of the practices, and he looked good in the no-huddle stuff that we’re doing. We get Gabe Ervin Jr. back, I think it’s a deep room. We’ll have to do a good job as coaches of figuring out what each guy does well. I think we have a good feel for it, but I was really pleased to see some of the things that Dante did today. Just a flash and a burst that maybe I hadn’t felt as the spring has gone on.”

  497.

  498.
On level of comfort with tampering
“It is what it is. It is what it is. They’re going to call D-Bell (Demitrius Bell) and say ‘come here, come there,’ but when he’s hurt, who’s there with him? We are. I just have to coach them all like they’re my younger brother. I don’t like to say sons. I coach them all like they’re my younger brother. I’m hard on them probably, like an older brother is, but I try to give them advice, I try to listen to them. Help them through this. Sometimes they offer you so much money, you’ve got to leave. Coaches complain about it. My assistant coaches do the same thing to me – ‘hey, coach, I got this offer to go there.’ I just want them all to be successful. It’s a sad state. I’ll just say that. It’s a sad state. But it is what it is. And you know what? A lot of people want to come here too. A lot of people want to stay here. Roster numbers are certainly not going to be our issue in terms of having enough good players. I hope everyone saw that today. You saw a lot of guys flashing and doing some things. Maybe I’m thinking through three scrimmages, but we have a lot of depth. Keelan Smith made some big time catches down the stretch. I think we have a lot of guys that can make plays.”

  520.
Nebraska dominates Hawkeyes before weather delay causes postponement

With Nebraska in command, the local baseball team ran into a force they could not defeat today at Haymarket Park . . . Mother Nature. With one out and one Hawkeye on base in the top of the sixth inning, the guy in the red jacket carrying a lightening detector came walking down the third baseline to inform the umpire crew that the game would have to be paused. Unfortunately, that pause is going to last until tomorrow.

  526.
  527.

  528.
Rhett Stokes made the most of his start at second base today, getting base hits in his first two at-bats, scoring once and driving in a couple of runs on the second one. With Cayden Brumbaugh apparently nicked up a bit from last night’s game, the transfer from New Mexico Military Institute made the most of his opportunity today going two for three with two RBI and a run scored. That is indicative of the next man up mentality of this years Nebraska baseball team.

  529.

  530.
Mason McConnaughey shook off his miserable start last week with command of all of his pitches, particularly his nasty slider. Today he faced Aaron Savary for the Hawkeyes, who sported a 4-0 record and a 3.52 ERA in three starts and 13 total appearances. While the Hawkeyes struck first in the top of the third inning on a Ben Wilmes solo home run off a Big Mac breaking pitch left too high in the zone, the big righty from Topeka basically controlled the Iowa hitters through 5.1 innings before the teams were removed from the field.

  536.
  537.

  538.
With Iowa up 1-0, timely hitting and bombs became the MO for the Cornhuskers over the next three innings.

  539.

  540.
In the bottom of the third Nebraska tied it up as Stokes stroked a single with one out. That was followed by a Case Sanderson single and some aggressive base running by Stokes to have runners on the corners with one out and Riley Silva coming to bat. Silva laid a beautiful sacrifice bunt down the first base line to score Stokes. After three innings it was 1-1.

  541.

  542.
With Big Mac working around a walk and a base hit in the top of the fourth, the Big Red struck for three more runs in their half. Josh Caron smoked a double into the rightfield corner and then scored on a Ben Columbus base hit. That brought Cole Evans to the plate who was promptly hit on the thigh. That end the day for Savary.

  549.

  550.
In came another righthander, Reese Beuter with no outs and Cornhuskers on first and second base. Dylan Carey sacrificed both runners up 90-feet. Beuter then struck out Joshua Overbeek, bringing Stokes to the plate. All the second baseman did was smoke a single to score Columbus and Evans, making the score 4-1 in favor of Nebraska.

  551.

  552.
McConnaughey gave up a lead-off double to Blake Guerin in the fifth inning and then sat down the next three Hawkeyes despite starting to struggle a little bit with location.

  553.

  554.
Riley Silva led off the Nebraska fifth with a ground out to Gable Mitchell at second base and then the flood gates opened. Tyler Stone got his first hit of the game with a single to right. He then started jumping up and down between first and second base watching a Josh Caron smash go over the rightfield wall putting Nebraska up 6-1. Flustered, Beuter walked Ben Columbus and then served up the second Cornhusker home run of the inning to Cole Evans. Nebraska was now ahead 8-1.

  561.

  562.
McConnoughey came out for the sixth inning, getting a ground out and then giving up a base hit to Davis Cop before the game was paused due to lightening in the area. That brings a mandatory 30-minute pause from the last recorded strike, and the way the radar looked, it was going to be a wait.

  570.
Shortly after 4:15 p.m. notice was given that the game would continue starting at 11:00 a.m. Sunday. Obviously, that means Mason McConnaughey’s day is done and someone else will take the mound with one out and Davis Cop on first base in the top of the sixth inning. That said, the forecast for tomorrow makes it look iffy that any baseball will be played. We’ll all have to wait and see!

  571.

  572.
Notes:

  573.
· Cayden Brumbaugh did not make the start today. Without official information, the assumption is he was injured to some extent in the game last night. He has been an offensive leader the past few weeks so it would not make sense if it was anything else.

  574.
· From the Iowa perspective, Kyle Huckstorf broke a bone in his hand last night, so Sam Petersen moved to take his place in centerfield. And perhaps more importantly, press box conversation alluded to both starters Brody Brecht and Cade Obermueller not 100%. That said, one of them may very well start tomorrow’s game as Iowa can ill afford to get shut out this weekend.

  575.
· Josh Caron was two for three with a home run, two RBI, a double, and two runs scored. Rhett Stokes also had two hits, two RBI and a run scored.

  576.
· After a first inning walk, Iowa third baseman Raider Tello has a 29 game on base streak. How about that for a name! Raider Tello!
