12.
A Bargain At Twice The Price: Kirby Smart Gets Paid (Even More)

 19.
 20.
UGA AD Josh Brooks has also gotten a pay bump to bring him closer to par with his coevals.

It’s good to be Kirby Smart.

 21.
Profitable, too.

 22.
The top ‘Dawg wasn’t exactly clipping coupons before. But today the Board of Governors of the UGA Athletic Association approved a two year contract extension that takes his current deal through December 2033 with an annual salary of $13 million per year. The deal also includes bonuses of up to $1.55 million.

 23.
The new deal is a $1.75 million per year bump over Smart’s prior contract, and pushes him past Clemson’s Dabo Swinney to become college football’s highest-paid coach.

 24.
In my book he’s still a bargain. After his first season the Red and Black have either won a national title, played for a national title, or played in the SEC championship game every single season. The Bulldogs became the only team to win back-to-back national championships in the playoff era. It’s the most sustained success the program has ever had. And it’s coincided with seismic shifts in the sport’s landscape, tremors which have caused other coaches to leave the sport but which Smart has navigated adeptly.

 25.
Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks also received a contract extension with a new annual salary of $1.275 million, and scheduled annual increases of $100,000. The deal is recognition of Brooks’ status as an up-and-comer among athletic administrators nationally.

 26.
While I don’t know that Brooks is a threat to go anywhere soon, Georgia really needed to bump his pay to keep up with the Joneses. Brooks’ $855,000 deal had been the lowest among the league’s athletic directors. For comparison, Florida’s Scott Stricklin earns $1.795 million a year, Kentucky’s Mitch Barnhart makes $1.2 million, LSU’s Scott Woodward has a $1.85 million salary. Tennessee’s Danny White earns a jaw-dropping $2.31 million annually (I don’t know the exchange rate for Hillbilly dollars versus U.S. dollars but that still seems like a lot.

 46.
Condon claims school home run record as Georgia drops series against the Aggies

The Georgia Baseball team kicked off a tough week of play this past Tuesday against the fourth ranked Clemson Tigers at Foley Field as it was the biggest non-conference match-up the Dawgs have had all season. Georgia would strike first in this one as Paul Toetz would hit an RBI single into Center Field as it brought in Kolby Branch to give the Dawgs an early 1-0 lead. The Tigers would respond with runs of their own in the third and fourth inning as Clemson held a 3-1 lead all the way up until the seventh inning. Georgia would draw closer in the seventh inning as Dylan Goldstein would score on a Corey Collins single to put things at 3-2. Corey Collins would come through for the Dawgs once again in the bottom of the ninth as he hit a huge game tying single as he would bring in Trey King to put things at 3-3 going into extra innings. A few innings would go by before either team would earn the winning run as both teams were running out of arms as twenty total pitchers took the mound between the two teams. At last, Georgia would earn the winning run by the way of a passed ball in the fifteenth inning to capture the 4-3 win.

 54.
Following the win, the Diamond Dawgs packed up and made their way to College Station to take on the number one ranked Texas A&M Aggies for a three game series. The Diamond Dawgs would earn the first run in game one as Charlie Condon launched a solo home run into Left Field as he drew closer to the UGA career home run record.

 62.
Texas A&M would quickly respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the second to notch things up at 1-1. The Aggies would add on another run in the fourth as they held a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth inning. Georgia’s lineup wouldn’t allow the Aggies to hold onto the lead for long though as Dylan Goldstein roped a solo shot into Right Field to put the score at 2-2.

 68.
 69.

 70.
Georgia would be unable to put together anymore offense following the fifth inning though as the Dawgs’ bullpen would be unable to keep things at bey as the Aggies would continue to put up runs and would eventually earn the 5-2 win over Georgia.

 71.
Game two would be a part of a double-header Saturday as it was a very disappointing game for the Dawgs. Georgia originally got off to a tremendous start as they exploded in the first inning with nine runs as Charlie Condon capped off the inning with his record tying 53rd career home run to give the Dawgs a 9-0 lead.

 72.

 77.
 78.

 79.
Those nine runs should have been enough to earn the win for the Dawgs as it would be the only runs Georgia would score that day. Unfortunately, Georgia’s pitching staff struggled tremendously in game two as the Dawgs’ pitchers gave up a total of nineteen runs as Texas A&M earned the seventh inning run rule win by a final score of 19-9.

 80.
Georgia would have to immediately move on from the beat-down loss as they desperately needed to win game three to avoid the series sweep. The Aggies started quickly in game three as they earned runs in the first and third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Texas A&M would hold that 2-0 lead until the seventh inning until Kolby Branch crushed a solo homer for the Dawgs to put the score at 2-1.

 81.

 86.
 87.

 88.
The Dawgs would continue to launch the long ball in the seventh inning as Tre Phelps hit a two run shot into Left Field to give Georgia a 3-2 lead. The homers would not stop there though as Charlie Condon capped things off with the third home run in the inning for the Dawgs as it was a historic one. Condon passed Gordon Beckham on UGA’s all time home run list with the 54th home run of his career and his 29th of the season to give Georgia the 5-2 lead.

 89.

 96.
The five runs attributed by Georgia’s offense would be all the Dawgs would need as they avoided the three game sweep by a final score of 5-4.

 97.
The Diamond Dawgs now sit at a still impressive 31-12 record on the season along with a 10-11 record in SEC play. Georgia will now get a couple of days of rest before heading over to play the in state Kennesaw State Owls on Tuesday. Following the game against the Owls, Georgia will travel back to Athens and get ready to host the eleventh ranked Vanderbilt Commodores for what is sure to be a huge three game series as game one is set to begin on Friday night.

 116.

 117.
 118.
In the words of that sage draft observer Carl Spackler, “It’s a Cinderella story.”

 119.
In 2020 Ladd McConkey chose the Georgia Bulldogs in 2020 over a competing offer from UT-Chattanooga. Tonight the Murray County Menace was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers with the 34th overall pick, early in the second round of the NFL Draft.

 120.
McConkey is the first offensive player taken in the newly minted Jim Harbaugh era. In fact the Chargers traded up one spot with the New England Patriots to land Madd Ladd, who also had pre-draft interest from the Patriots. That makes it seem like Harbaugh just couldn’t stand the thought of watching his guy go off the board one spot ahead of the Bolts’ pick.

 121.
It’s easy to see why Harbaugh would want McConkey in the fold. Over the course of three seasons in the red and black McConkey caught 119 passes for 1,687 yards (14.2 ypc) with 14 touchdowns. He also rushed 13 times for 216 yards (14.4 per rush) and found the endzone 4 times as a ball carrier, including this career capper against Florida State:

 122.

 123.

 124.
Ladd McConkey weaves his way into the endzone for a Bulldog TD

Georgia up BIG over FSU in the first half

(via @espn) pic.twitter.com/ex4DHUcuX2
— Yahoo Sports (@YahooSports) December 30, 2023
 125.

 126.
 127.
 128.

 129.
McConkey’s acceleration and route-running stood out throughout his career in Athens, but really caught the eye of scouts at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine, where he ran an impressive 4.39 forty. It’s no stretch to say he may be the crispest route runner in the 2024 Draft, getting in and out of breaks smoothly and gaining separation with his sneaky explosiveness.

 130.
McConkey doesn’t have ideal NFL receiver size (6’0, 186 lb.). But then a lot of the best offensive weapons in the league fall into that category as well. He also faced some questions about his health after dealing with an ankle injury at the end of the 2023 season. McConkey missed five games in 2023, but I think his overall body of work in Athens should quell any doubts about his durability. McConkey’s going to be on the field when he’s needed if there’s any way he can be.

 131.
That dovetails with one of McConkey‘s other primary attributes, his reputation as a wonderful locker room guy and a leader on and off the field. He’s just not a player you have to worry about being a morale or legal issue. He’ll show up, he’ll work hard, and if his career in Athens is any indication, he will produce first downs and touchdowns like it’s his job (because now it actually is).

 132.
The Chargers have now secured Justin Herbert a reliable weapon who can be used in the slot or downfield. Ladd McConkey has secured the dream that could have eluded him had Kirby Smart not taking a chance on an undersized but productive kid from North Georgia.

 133.
This Cinderella story seems to have worked out for all involved. Until later…

 134.
Go ‘Dawgs!!!

 154.
Day two of the NFL Draft gets started in an hour or so, with coverage again across the ABC/ESPN family of television networks. A pair of Georgia Bulldogs heard their names called in Thursday night’s first round. And now a slew of other Classic City Canines are looking to find out where they’ll continue their football careers.

 155.
Ladd McConkey was a pretty trendy pick to go late in the first round, but the dominoes just didn’t quite fall his way. I’d expect him to be off the board fairly soon in round two though. Javon Bullard is another player with likely second round potential. Fellow ‘Dawgs Kamari Lassiter and Sedrick Van Pran Granger could also sneak into the second, but are almost certain to be off the board by the end of round three.

 156.
The full rundown of selections (prior to trades, obviously) is below. Let’s find good homes for some of our favorite ‘Dawgs.

 246.
We speculated earlier this week that, while most mock drafts had Amarius Mims going late in the first or even in the second, some team might jump up to grab him earlier because they just couldn’t pass up his sky high potential.

 247.
That team was the Cincinnati Bengals.

 248.
Cincy made the Blocker from Bleckley the #18 pick in the first round. He’ll be tasked with helping protect Joe Burrow, as the Bengals are building one of the most massive offensive lines in football history. Mims will likely get the chance to apprentice behind the Bengals current behemoth tackles, Trent Brown and Orlando Brown before potentially moving into the starting lineup.

 249.
Mims is the fifth Georgia offensive lineman to be taken in the first round and 11th overall since 2017. That’s a pretty impressive record, but not a surprise given the emphasis on the position group in the recruiting process and the developmental talents of Sam Pittman, Matt Luke and Stacy Searels.

 271.
Everyone loves a franchise quarterback. But at some point you’ve got to have somebody for that guy to throw the ball to, and maybe a couple of guys who can block for him.

 272.
Brock Bowers is that guy. Now he’s that guy, but in Sin City.

 273.
The Napa Nightmare was selected #13 overall by the Las Vegas Raiders in the first round of tonight’s draft, becoming the first Bulldog off the board. The Raiders are headed into a full rebuild of an offense that was a liability in 2023. With the elite quarterbacks all gone it seems they’ve decided to roll with Aiden O’Connell and surround him with more weapons. With Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers, Tre Tucker, and tight end Michael Mayer the Raiders weren’t really hurting for pass catchers. And they might have been better served to bring in an immediate OL starter. But for Big Bad Brock’s sake I’m glad they didn’t.

 293.
 294.
The NFL Draft kicks off at 8:00 tonight from Detroit across the ESPN family of properties. Georgia Bulldogs including Brock Bowers and Amarius Mims are fairly likely to hear their names called during tonight’s first round.

 295.
It looks to be a quarterback-heavy affair, with USC’s Caleb Williams, LSU’s Jayden Daniels, Oregon’s Bo Nix, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, Washington’s Michael Penix, and Michogan’s JJ McCarthey all candidates to be selected in the top 20 selections.

 296.
Bulldog fans can probably thank that glut of talent at least in part for the fact that we don’t have a quarterback battle in Athens this season. But the number of other UGA athletes likely to pop up not only tonight but during tomorrow’s 2nd and 3rd rounds should be another great advertisement for Kirby Smart’s program.

 297.
This will be the spot for commentary on the Bulldogs selected, as well as any general discussion of the festivities. Who knows, Georgia Tech may even have a player or two selected, at least once all the standouts from Mercer and Kennesaw State are off the board.

 351.
 352.
“Potential Means You Ain’t Done Much Yet.”

 353.
The above phrase was a favorite of one of my high school coaches growing up in (like Amarius Mims, coincidentally) Bleckley County. The county is among Georgia’s smallest, and is noteworthy primarily for being the halfway point between Atlanta and St. Simon’s Island, as well as its residents’ odd propensity for putting spaghetti noodles in Brunswick stew (don’t knock it until you’ve tried it).

 354.
But I digress. It’s true that there are a lot of folks out there with potential. And potential is a great thing. You’d rather have it than not. But potential on its own isn’t worth much generally speaking.

 355.
Except in the NFL Draft. In the NFL Draft it can be worth millions. Amarius Mims may be among the most intriguing early round prospects in this draft because of his potential. At 6’8, 340 pounds it’s possible no one has ever looked more like an NFL offensive tackle than him. He has long arms, broad shoulders, and carries those 340 pounds as well as anyone.

 356.
Offensive line is the most difficult position to scout in college football. It is incredibly hard to know how a 14 or 15-year-old kid will develop physically and mentally by the time he’s ready to play up front in the SEC.

 357.
That being said, Amarius Mims was a no-brainer.

 364.

 365.
After playing tight end and defensive end for Bleckley County head coach Von Lassiter*, Mims transition to the offensive tackle spot as a junior and emerged as one of the top underclassmen prospects in the nation almost immediately.

 366.
He arrived in Athens in the 2021 recruiting class as a five star recruit, among the top twenty in the nation according to every major recruiting service, and the near-unanimous top player in the state of Georgia.

 367.
Of course, it’s not like Georgia was running low on elite offensive linemen when he arrived in Athens. With future NFL players Jamaree Salyer, Broderick Jones, and Warren McClendon already entrenched, Mims saw action in eight games for the 2021 national champions as a true freshman.

 368.
As a sophomore Mims saw his role behind Jones and McClendon increase, as he played in 14 of Georgia’s 15 games as part of another national championship team. With those guys headed to the NFL 2023 was set to be Mims’ chance to shine.

 369.
But alas, life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans. Mims earned the starting nod at right tackle coming out of spring and was named first team preseason All-SEC. However, a persistent high ankle sprain limited him to action in 7 games, making only 6 starts. It’s a fruitless exercise to forecast what will never have been. But a healthy Amarius Mims could well have played himself into the top ten of this draft.

 370.
Big. Brawny. Balletic.

 371.
As it is, the numbers from Amarius’s time in Athens are still pretty impressive. The Cochran Crusher played 803 snaps in the red and black, 401 of which were passing plays. In those 402 opportunities he surrendered only 7 quarterback pressures, and no sacks. Zero. Zip. Zilch. It just doesn’t get any better than that. Especially when you consider that he earned his first start against Ohio State in the 2022 College Football Semifinals and played significant snaps throughout the SEC schedule. There could be more tape out there on Mims. But the tape that he did lay down is phenomenal.

 372.
How will that translate to the NFL? No one really knows. Mims showcases better technique than you’d expect from a guy with his height and length. His hand placement is excellent, and he has pretty heavy hands. If he gets a punch and a good foot set on a rusher that defender is just out of luck. Mims also has better hip bend and rotation than you’d expect for a 6’8 tackle. He’s just more athlete than he’s supposed to be at that size, and that’s going to intrigue some teams.

 373.

 374.

 375.
6’7 340. Amarius Mims is an alien. pic.twitter.com/nv11r6O9ym
— Kyron Samuels (@kyronsamuels) March 3, 2024

 378.
 379.

 380.
Perhaps his best attributes however are his feet. Mims is quick out of his stance and fluid in his sets. Even when a pass rusher appears to have an angle on him or to have timed his get-off to win the rep, Mims seems to recover all that advantage on the second and third steps.

 381.
Are there question marks? Sure. Mims is a good downfield blocker in part due to his athleticism, but struggled at times when he needed to just move bigger defenders out of the way in the run game.

 382.
He’s definitely further ahead as a pass blocker than a run blocker. And that punch I mentioned above that allows him to stop edge rushers cold also takes him out over his hips sometimes, hurting his balance. That’s an evolving technique issue that can be sorted out though.

 383.
Amarius Mims definitely has more development ahead of him. He hasn’t played that much college football, and that’s going to worry some teams and drop him out of the top 4-5 offensive tackles chosen.

 384.
But Mims very clearly has the physical tools and developing talent to be a first round selection for a team that can bring him along in year one. He’s nowhere close to his physical ceiling, which is as high as any tackle prospect in this class. While he stayed mostly on the right side in college, that was largely due to the presence of NFL first round left tackle Broderick Jones and future NFL first round left tackle Ernest Greene. There’s no reason Mims couldn’t also find a home on the blind side in the league as he continues to hone his craft. Until later…

 385.
Go ‘Dawgs!!!

 386.

 387.
* Lassiter was also the high school head coach and offensive coordinator for future Bulldogs Jake Fromm and Trey Hill at Houston County. In short, he may have sent as much talent to Athens in recent years as any high school coach around. If you happen to see him at Scott’s Barbecue in Cochran, as a Bulldog fan I think you are obligated to at least buy him some banana pudding or some of that weirdly delicious Brunswick stew with the noodles in it.
