20.
After the first two games, it appeared the Magic couldn’t adapt and match the Cavaliers’ physicality. After Game 3, it appears they might have found the cracks in the armor.

Thursday’s Game 2, while a resilient win for the Cleveland Cavaliers, illustrated a potential blueprint for the Orlando Magic.

 21.
While the Magic were clawing their way back in the fourth quarter, they adjusted and threw Jalen Suggs onto Donovan Mitchell and started doubling the All-NBA guard off on-ball screens.

 22.
While it appeared to catch the Cavaliers off guard at the time, the team was able to put Game 2 in the rearview leaving with the win. Something about those late-game adjustments offered pause to those looking for how Orlando would approach what felt like their kitchen sink game in Game 3.

 23.
Two things stood out about Orlando’s approach from the start. One was that Jonathan Isaac was removed from the starting center and replaced by Wendall Carter Jr. The other notable was that Jalen Suggs was matching up with Mitchell early and often.

 24.
For a majority of the series, Gary Harris was assigned to Mitchell and the Orlando brass trusted that matchup. However, that sliver of Suggs on Mitchell in the fourth quarter did bear fruit for good defensive results in game three. Suggs and the Magic were able to drain the Cavaliers’ offense of any life and juice.

 25.
Suggs was a blanket on both guards in game three. According to NBA.com, Jalen Suggs spent a majority of his time on the floor defensively matched against Mitchell. In the roughly seven minutes of the game, Mitchell struggled to generate looks. In the five-shot attempts that Mitchell was able to get off, he only converted two of those looks. Suggs as a whole in the game held his defensive assignment to a 22% field goal percentage on 2-9 shooting.

 26.
The Magic, alongside the Suggs assignment, were committed to hounding Mitchell off the screens the Cavaliers were executing with success in the first two games. While there were glimpses early showing growth from last postseason, this became a daunting task for the offense. It appears that even though they could break through at times, it still mucked up the offense, especially Mitchell who could only muster 13 points on 6-16 shooting.

 27.
The Cavaliers’ offense, in a microcosm for the whole season, has felt that it can only succeed as much as Mitchell does. Last night was an example of this, the team struggled from all facets. The Cavaliers essentially had the script flipped on them shooting an abysmal 8-34 (23.5%) from three, while struggling to generate looks from the rim as only 27% of their shots came from there as opposed to the over 37% that happened the previous two games.

 42.

 43.
The Magic essentially took the defensive approach the Cavaliers have used on them for two games and forced Cleveland to beat them from the outside in. While the Cavaliers haven’t necessarily been riding a hot streak from the perimeter, the threes they were making felt timely and necessary. If they cannot find ways to get to the rim, the offense can continue to flounder.

 44.
For the Cavaliers, facing a team that can force a lot of defensive pressure in round 1 is a necessary challenge. The Cavs can use Game 4 as a stepping stone and adapt to Orlando’s defensive counterpunch. The Magic showed that all it can take to swing a game in your favor is minor adjustments. The Cavaliers have the opportunity to provide their response and swing the series back in their favor.

 62.

 63.
 64.
Garland disappeared once again in Game 3 as he totaled just 5 points in Cleveland’s most lopsided playoff loss.

Donovan Mitchell has said some version of the same thing every time he’s been asked about Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland’s struggles throughout the season.

 65.
“We made this thing [Mitchell coming to Cleveland] for us to be together,” Mitchell said in December. “That’s my brother. That’s my dog.”

 66.
The question continuously needs to be asked considering how they haven’t complimented each other the way they should. Game 3s humiliating loss was further proof of that as the Orlando Magic dared anyone besides Mitchell to beat them, and they couldn’t. This included Garland who finished with just 5 points on 2-10 shooting in 31 minutes.

 67.
Magic head coach Jahmal Mosley entered this series with too much respect for Garland. He put his best perimeter defender, Jalen Suggs, on him for the first two games and was hesitant to double Mitchell even though Gary Harris was having a tough time containing Mitchell. The most recent time Mosley was asked why Suggs wasn’t starting on Mitchell, his answer came back to why it was so important to stop Garland.

 68.
He was partially right. It’s important to stop Garland, but he didn’t have to go through all that effort to do so.

 69.
The idea of playing with Garland has intrigued Mitchell because he knows how having a second dynamic guard can alleviate pressure for him. Teams shouldn’t be able to easily double or put their best perimeter defender on him without risking what could happen to the other guard. However, this has proven true only in theory and not on the court.

 70.
Garland should’ve been the guy who broke Orlando’s defense every time they blitzed Mitchell, except he was always found standing 35 feet from the hoop in the least threatening position on the court.

 71.

 72.

 74.

 75.
While five sets of eyes watched Mitchell, none were on Garland. That can’t happen. Even if Mitchell could throw it out to Garland, he isn’t in a position to do anything if the ball did come to him.

 76.

 77.
Aside from getting help from Garland, Mitchell needs to do a better job at handling these traps. He’s still often too late in getting rid of the ball or tries to take it on when he doesn’t have to. The same issues that popped up against the New York Knicks are doing so again now.

 78.
Garland has helped in these situations in the past, at least more than he did in Game 3. He showed he could do so at the end of Game 2 even though the team as a whole struggled when Mitchell was trapped. Here, he goes down to the corner so that he’s in a position to get the second pass from the trap and draws a foul. That’s not something he can do from the Kia Center logo.

 79.

 80.
They’ve even shown they can do creative things like they did in one of their final regular season games two weeks ago. Garland slips an on-ball screen and gets a flare screen from Jarrett Allen that generates a clean look.

 81.

 82.
Garland has had a tough campaign. It’s clear that he isn’t the guy from the last two seasons and there’s little reason to believe he will be at any point this season. But the Cavs don’t need him to be that. They just need someone who can keep the defense honest and not allow the game to get out of hand when Mitchell sits like it did at end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second on Thursday night.

 96.
Watching the Market: Cavaliers at Magic Game 3

 100.
 101.
Mike Watters-USA TODAY Sports

 102.

 103.
 104.
The Cavs put together a lifeless performance en route to a massive blowout.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were blown out in Game 3 against the Orlando Magic, a startling development after winning the first two games of the series. It was a complete failure from top to bottom, with both the players and coaching staff bearing plenty of blame. Here is how the market looks following the laughable loss.

 105.
Stock Down: Darius Garland is not dependable

 106.
The Magic did something that inexplicably hadn't done all series yet: put Jalen Suggs on Donovan Mitchell and trap him when possible.

 107.
Orlando did that throughout the first 2.5 quarters before Cleveland waved the white flag and the results were, predictably, not great for the Cavs. Suggs is a tough defender, but the traps forced Mitchell to give up the ball and allow somebody else to make a play. Nobody did.

 108.
There is plenty of fault to go around, but Darius Garland needs to be the point of the spear when Mitchell is getting swarmed. But he just... wasn't. Garland played 30 minutes, finished 2-10 from the floor, and was largely ineffective the entire game. The Cavs were kept afloat in the first two games of the series because their defense was so good and, even when it wasn't, Orlando could get very little going on offense. With the Magic clicking and Mitchell getting doubled, Garland was somehow even less effective.

 109.
Cleveland’s ceiling, even if they get past Orlando, is quite short if Garland plays like this. But the Magic have clearly figured something out here. The Cavs, and Garland, will have to counter in Game 4.

 110.
Stock Down: J.B. Bickerstaff’s Rotations

 111.
Garland has, and should, get criticized for the play. But his head coach did the team no favors either. J.B. Bickerstaff, as has been the case on and off this season, made some poor rotation decisions. He probably should have gone to Sam Merrill earlier, especially with the Magic daring somebody other than Mitchell to beat them. Why not get a sharpshooter like Merrill, who torched the Magic for 26 points back in January, more court time? Sure, he is a defensive liability, but you need a spark. a glimmer of daylight is all Merrill needs to get going.

 112.
This may be a little unpopular, but here it goes: Bickerstaff could have gone to Marcus Morris and Tristan Thompson for a few minutes to give the Cavs some physicality. Other than Jarrett Allen, the Cavs were pretty lifeless out there. Morris and Thompson are not good players at this stage of their career (or playoff-caliber), but the Cavs were getting mauled on the glass and in the paint. Why not get some physical, veteran players out there to play some rough ball?

 113.
Another thing, as noted by my Fear the Sword colleague Tony Pesta:

 114.

 115.

 116.
I know they’re down by a million but I’m baffled by how quickly JB pulled the plug
— Tony Pesta (@Tony_Pesta) April 26, 2024
 117.

 118.
 119.
 120.

 121.
The Magic found something in the fourth quarter of Game 2. Now they weren't down as much as the Cavs were in Game 3, but head coach Jahmal Mosley kept the starters in and let them figure out the Cavs' defense and offense. That resulted in some meaningful changes for the Magic as implemented in the Game 3 romp.

 122.
Stock Up: Jarrett Allen was good

 123.
The only guy who brought it tonight was Allen, who had 15 points and eight rebounds in 24 minutes. He had energy, was out there fighting for rebounds, and was the whole offense in the first quarter essentially. Having a good Allen certainly helps the Cavs greatly, but he isn't enough to will the team to a win. But great to see that the “lights too bright” comment from last summer hasn't made its way to this playoff run...at least for Allen himself.

 124.
Stock Up: Evan Mobley is also good

 125.
He might be more center than power forward (and not a great center, at that), but Mobley still has his moments of wow.

 153.
The Cavs were fully outplayed on Thursday.

Final Score: Orlando Magic 121, Cleveland Cavaliers 83.

 154.
Nightly Notables

 155.
Not much notable from this one. When Tristan Thompson and Marcus Morris entered the game in the third quarter, the Cavs effectively punted on the game. Which already felt over.

 156.
The Cavs finished the game shooting 39% from the field and 23.5% from three.

 157.
Well, that happened...

 158.
Cavs’ last six quarter point totals: 22, 16, 21, 24, 16, 22. It’s hard to win playoff games when your offense isn’t functioning anymore. Donovan Mitchell finishing 6-16 is a big part of this, but no one else stepped up.

 159.
The Magic also hit a number of tough mid-range shots that helped them pull away from the Cavs. If you look at how their shot profile ultimately broke down, they still didn’t shoot well at the rim (just 57.7%) and were about average from three. But they were on fire in the mid-range whereas the the Cavs were cold from just about everywhere except the rim.

 163.
Big Picture

 164.
Cleveland is still up in the series. A 2-1 lead — and home court still protected — is a good place to be. The Cavs are still the favorite to ultimately win this series. But how Game 3 played out might indicate that this series is going to go long and the Cavs have some work to do get back on track and turn things around in Game 4.

 165.
Up next: Game 4 of the series is on Saturday with a 1 p.m. tipoff in Orlando.

 185.
 186.
Will the real Cavaliers please stand up?

You don’t know how good a team is until they show they can confront and overcome adversity.

 187.
Last season, we found out that the Cleveland Cavaliers weren’t a good team despite having the second-best net rating in the league because they never got off the mat when they first got punched in the face by the New York Knicks. They’ve shown that they aren’t that team this playoffs through two games, but the jury is still out. The Cavs haven’t been punched in the face yet. That should change in Game 3.

 188.
The first two games against the Orlando Magic have gone exactly as J.B. Bickerstaff envisioned. Orlando’s shooters he decided to leave open can’t hit water from a boat and his bigs aren’t giving them any second-chance opportunities. This, combined with Donovan Mitchell’s resurgence, has allowed them to completely impose their will in a series they haven’t trailed in.

 189.
That trend won’t hold up in Orlando. The Magic will throw the best punch in Game 3 as teams do when the series shifts back to their home court. This will show us if this team is for real.

 190.
The Cavs have talked all season about building to the playoffs. The way they’ve gone about doing that hasn’t been ideal. Their best basketball came without two of their starters and they limped into the playoffs by throwing their last game because they were scared of the Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. They compiled a string of brutal losses after the All-Star break which led to being ranked 22nd in net rating and 23rd in defense in that span. The Cavaliers weren’t just mediocre since the break. They were a lottery-level team for nearly two months.

 191.
They’ve flipped the switch in the playoffs and appear to have returned to the team that won 18 out of 20 before the break. But that switch can be turned off just as easily.

 192.
The Magic may have found something in the fourth quarter when they held the Cavaliers to just 16 points. Blitzing Mitchell in on-ball screens and shading more help than normal his was led to forced shots or difficult late shot-clock attempts.

 193.

 194.
Magic head coach Jahmal Mosley hinted postgame that he might be doing more of this in Game 3, which is something Mitchell showed he struggled with last playoffs against the Knicks. He will need to be better than he was in the fourth. This will undoubtedly be part of Orlando’s best punch and something Mitchell himself still needs to prove he can overcome.

 195.
The Eastern Conference has more parity than it has in decades. The Boston Celtics are the only team with the talent to be great but have shown in the last several playoffs that they’re more than capable of losing to a less talented team, which includes dropping Game 2 at home against a shell of the Heat. Even though the Cavs aren’t the most skilled group in the East, their best basketball can beat anyone else in the conference. However, they need to prove much more in this series and beyond before we can believe that this team can play at their best when it matters most.

 196.
The Cavs have spent this season wildly oscillating between a team that’s far better and far worse than the sum of their parts. Right now, they seem to be clicking at the right time, but the Magic have appeared like a deer in the headlights making it difficult to discern whether the Cavs have grown into the team they have the talent to be or if the Magic just aren’t ready for this stage.

 197.
Game 3 won’t decide the series or the Cavs’ season. It will, however, give us a glimpse as to whether or not this team is for real. Good teams can take their opponent’s best punch and counter. We’ll see if the Cavs can do that.

 217.
Let’s get into it.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NBA. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cleveland Cavaliers fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

 218.
Two questions this week, both very straightforward:

 219.
First: If the Cavs beat the Magic, do they have a shot against the Celtics? (Yes, no)

 220.
Second: The Cavs are doing better than expected against the Magic. (Yes, no)

 221.
Answers to these questions could change. There’s still a series to be finished against the Magic. But with the Cavs up 2-0, it feels like a good time to take stock and look slightly ahead.

 222.
Please take our survey

 239.

 240.

 241.
 242.
Cleveland is executing J.B. Bickerstaff’s plan to perfection.

Paolo Banchero had an open transition three after two Cleveland Cavaliers fell down behind the play midway through the first quarter of Game 2. Instead of confidentially taking it, he pump-faked and tried to drive into the paint, which allowed the defenders to get back into the play. He settled for a contested midrange jumper that led to a fastbreak dunk the other way.

 243.
This is what it looks like when a team is out of its comfort zone.

 244.
Orlando Magic head coach Jahmal Mosley said after Game 1 that he liked the looks they got. “We just got to continue to step into them with that level of confidence.”

 245.
Saying that and meaning it are two different things. After Game 2, it’s safe to say his team doesn’t believe they can make the outside shot when dared to do so. They passed up attempts, and when they did take them, they seemed to know the shot wasn’t falling before it left their fingertips.

 246.
Playoff basketball is about taking away what your opponent does best and making them beat you other ways. The Cavs have made the bet that the Magic can’t consistently make threes. Through two games, that bet has more than paid off.

 247.
The Magic were 9-19 in the regular season when they took 35 or more threes and 38-16 when they attempted less. They’re now 0-2 in the playoffs after going 8-37 (21.6%) Saturday and 9-35 (25.7%) Monday.

 248.
Cleveland’s defense has done a good job of keeping the ball on the perimeter and daring their opponent to shoot over them. Particularly, guys they’re comfortable letting take threes, which includes Jonathan Isaac (3-11), Paolo Banchero (3-11), Jalen Suggs (1-10), and Wendell Carter Jr. (2-8).

 249.
“It’s frustrating for everybody when you keep shooting and it’s not going in,” Banchero said. “I’m not the only one who’s frustrated by that.”

 250.
The Cavs’ number one defensive goal is to make sure the rim is protected. They still rotated out to the shooters they were okay allowing three-point attempts from, but they closed out on balance to ensure their opponent didn’t get by them.

 251.

 252.
“I thought we did a great job of forcing them to take the shots that we wanted and conceding nothing,” Cavs head coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “Very few of the shots that they took tonight weren’t contested.”

 253.
Daring Orlando to shoot threes makes it more difficult for them to get to and finish at the rim, which is what they want to do most. The Magic led the regular season in shots in the restricted area and are taking nearly as many attempts in the first two games of the playoffs. The issue is they can’t finish them with multiple defenders waiting for them when they get there.

 254.
“They’re doing a good job of clogging lanes, packing the paint, and swarming the ball anytime you drive,” Banchero said. “It makes it hard.”

 255.
A play like the one below is emblematic of that. There are five Cavaliers in the paint when Gary Harris puts up his shot initial shot. Evan Mobley and Isaac Okoro both contest it before Mobley ends up blocking Moritz Wagner’s putback attempt.

 256.

 257.
This is why Orlando went from finishing 67.4% of their shots at the rim in the regular season to only 51.9% in the playoffs. Hitting more threes and extending the defense is the only way they can help alleviate some of those problems. As of now, they haven’t been able to do so.

 258.
The Cavaliers are dictating the terms of engagement so far. They’re forcing the Magic to take the shots they want and are physically meeting them at the rim when they come inside. That’s a recipe for good playoff defense no matter the opponent. It’s just easier to do that against a team like Orlando who has multiple guys on the floor you’re okay giving up outside shots to.

 259.
“I thought we did a good job of making them pick the [shots] we wanted,” Bickerstaff said. “And then we were physical with them and didn’t allow them to get the ball to their spots easily.”

 260.
“We learned that in our first playoffs,” Jarrett Allen said. “If you’re physical with them and you make every single play difficult, you’re going to wear the other team down. And that’s when they start making mistakes.”

 280.
Allen is walking the road to redemption.

Last season, the Cleveland Cavaliers were outrebounded in all but one game against the New York Knicks. This year, it’s a different story. They’ve won the rebounding battle in both games and hold a 2-0 series lead over the Orlando Magic. Jarrett Allen has led the charge with his control of the glass.

 281.
Allen, who faced the most scrutiny for last year’s beatdown, has already surpassed his rebounding total from the entire Knicks series with 38 rebounds across his first two games against Orlando. In battles where neither team is scoring in bunches, winning on the glass is crucial.

 282.
While a lack of rebounding was their downfall against New York — the Cavaliers currently hold a 21-rebound advantage over the Magic. Allen is the primary driving force behind their success in this department. He is single-handedly outrebounding Orlando’s top three rebounders (35 rebounds combined). Orlando is being blinded and Allen is the one operating the bright lights this time around.

 283.
The rest of the Cavs have done their part to assist. Max Strus has recorded 9 rebounds in each game of the series while Mitchell grabbed 8 rebounds in Game 2, more than Mitchell had in any single game of last year’s playoffs. All around, the rebounding support around Allen has been much stronger than in the past and it’s allowed him to thrive.

 284.
“Obviously, the bigs are supposed to rebound, but the guards have done an excellent job coming in and getting the second hit on the bigs,” Allen said. “You know, it’s not in the stat sheet, but every time we see it, and we appreciate it.”

 285.
Cleveland’s defense has held Orlando to the worst field goal percentage of any team in the playoffs so far. However, the Cavaliers forced New York into inefficient games last season to no avail. The difference is that Allen is securing stops by cleaning up the glass — whereas last year, the Knicks managed to scavenge enough second-chance opportunities to scrape by.

 286.
Limiting the Magic to just one shot attempt per possession has given them a razor-thin margin for error. But that’s not all. Allen hauled in 9 offensive rebounds in Game 2, in part contributing to 18 second-chance points for the Cavaliers. In a series where the Magic have scored 18 or fewer points in three separate quarters, that many second-chance points for the opponent is a backbreaker.

 287.
Winning the possession battle is key and Allen has more than fulfilled his role. Aside from rebounding, he has shot an efficient 12-20 from the field and turned the ball over just twice in 74 minutes. His control of possessions on both ends of the floor has made Allen arguably the most important player of either team so far.

 288.
The Cavaliers still have work to do in Orlando but if Allen continues his rampage on the glass, Orlando will have little chance of turning the tides back in their favor.
