12.
One last goodbye to For Whom the Cowbell Tolls

 19.
Well, it’s time to say goodbye, folks. The road goes on forever, but it looks like this party might be coming to an end.

Well, this is it. This is officially it. As I’m sure you know by now, For Whom the Cowbell Tolls is set to be shut down due to a business decision that was made above our heads.

 20.
After tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 30, this site will be done.

 21.
And that’s pretty sad, all things considered. This chapter of the Mississippi State blogosphere is coming to a close. This was once the go-to site for Mississippi State internet fun for many people.

 22.
That includes me. And when I tell you I’m heartbroken about the decision that was made, I mean it.

 23.
But hey, that’s just the way life goes sometimes. Sometimes things don’t work out the way you’d hope. When I joined this site, I had hopes to be a contributor for years. When I became the managing editor, I had set my sights on this site becoming the best content production machine of any sort of SEC blog. When I ultimately left in 2018, I had hopes that this site would be able to continue on as strong as it was going when I made the choice to leave.

 24.
When I came back a few months back, I planned on doing what I could to get it going in the right direction once more.

 25.
But things change. Life changes. Circumstances change. It’s all natural. And this, unfortunately, is just how things go sometimes.

 26.
Leaving in 2018 was difficult for me, but I was excited to embark upon a new adventure and open up a new chapter. There seems to be a bit more permanence to this chapter coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be exciting and fun things ahead.

 27.
I’ll be over at The Underdog Tribune writing stuff and having a good time. I’ll even continue blogging about music and nonsense, the way I often did from 2015 to 2017 while I was here.

 28.
But there are other places to get great Mississippi State content too! Maroon and White Nation is one. Check out Cowbell Corner or The Reflector. Heck, you can look into the recruiting services, the official stuff coming out of Mississippi State’s athletic departments, the Maroon Mic podcast, or any number of Facebook groups. There are so many other great podcasts, writers, bloggers, and social media pages you can follow too. It’s kinda hard to keep up with all of them, to be honest.

 29.
As for this site, it’s done. I have no real clue what will happen with it and all of the great (and sometimes not so great) content that was created over the years. Maybe it’ll live on in perpetuity with this being the final post ever. Maybe it’ll get sunset.

 30.
I don’t know.

 31.
If the good folks here at SB Nation are ever interested in reviving it, I’d love to chat with them about such an idea. But I really have no control or sway in those sorts of discussions.

 32.
It sure looks like this chapter is officially coming to an end. Everything comes to an end at some point or another. Interestingly enough, on a personal note, the end to this chapter also coincides with a real life job change at my day job. Tomorrow is my last day with my real world job.

 33.
And things start new for me soon enough.

 34.
I’m grateful for all of the folks who have come through here at one time or another. This site has been incredible to be a small part of.

 35.
Thank you, Praise the Lord and Go Dawgs, #AlwaysRunNeverPass, Hail State, and Raid the Air. It’s been fun folks. I’m intrigued to see what life has in store for us up ahead.

 36.
One more time for the road. Since Mississippi State is playing the Aggies this weekend and he just retired, it just feels right to send this site out with this one.

 37.
Today’s Tunes:

 38.

 39.
Robert Earl Keen is one of the greatest Texans to ever write a song or carry a tune. An absolute icon for country music and certainly a central figure for Texas country music over the past couple decades. This is probably his best known song. Anyone who is trying to figure REK out should start with this one.

 59.
Mississippi State plays football today! We should probably get ready to watch the Bulldogs!

Hey. It’s game day! Or gameday. Or Gameday. Or however you’d like to capitalize and spell it all out. Mississippi State plays football today. The Bulldogs are getting their SEC slate started as they head down the road to Baton Rouge to face off against the LSU Tigers.

 60.
That could be fun!

 61.
Or, if you examine the history of this series, it may not be the most exciting thing ever! Who knows!

 62.
Let’s get prepped for tonight’s game.

 63.
Mississippi State news and notes from yours truly at The Underdog Tribune
 64.

 65.
Yes, hey, I’m making myself a section. Look, I worked hard on this stuff. I want to show all of this preview content off. There’s even some stuff with a table of contents.

 66.

 67.
“Mississippi State football vs. LSU preview: Everything you need for Bulldogs vs. Tigers” by Ethan Lee, The Underdog Tribune - I tried to compile just about everything I possibly could for this. It’s everything I suspect you’ll need for this game. There’s a table of contents! How many Mississippi State previews have a table of contents?! Not many!

 68.
“Mississippi State football vs. LSU Tigers preview: Bulldogs look for road win in Baton Rouge” by Ethan Lee, The Underdog Tribune - How often do road wins in Baton Rouge happen? Not often. But hey it’s possible!

 69.
“Mississippi State football vs. LSU Tigers: TV channel, live stream, live stats, online coverage” by Ethan Lee, The Underdog Tribune - Want to know how to watch Mississippi State and LSU? Everything you need for that is right here.

 70.
“Mississippi State football vs. LSU pregame poll: How will Bulldogs do vs. Tigers?” by Ethan Lee, The Underdog Tribune - I want you to share your thoughts. Give me your opinions. I want them. I want to showcase what you’re thinking. So hey look I’ve got a poll for you to take right here.

 71.
“Mississippi State football vs. LSU Tigers: Bulldogs favored in Death Valley” by Ethan Lee, The Underdog Tribune - Mississippi State is favored on the road against the Tigers and that certainly doesn’t happen all that often.

 72.
“Mississippi State football vs. LSU Tigers 2022 preview and prediction” by Ethan Lee, The Underdog Tribune - I predict things. Specifically the Mississippi State - LSU game. I predict that. It’s pretty straightforward.

 73.

 74.
But! There are other folks who are also working hard to cover the Bulldogs! I’d love it if you read my content, but there’s plenty of other content out there that you should also read.

 75.
Mississippi State news and notes from around the internet

 76.

 77.

 78. “Mississippi State Baseball Releases 2023 SEC Schedule” by Elizabeth Keen, Cowbell Corner - In non-football news, we’ve got baseball news! And it’s a baseball schedule! That’s important information to have on hand.

 79.
“‘A Little Bit Tough to Evaluate’: LSU Team Looks Different Ahead of Mississippi State Matchup” by Crissy Froyd, Cowbell Corner - Back to football content for a second. This is a pretty interesting look at how LSU looks right now. Froyd and the aforementioned Keen do really good work over at Cowbell Corner. I recommend reading their work regularly.

 80.
“Mississippi State Football: 5 players to watch vs LSU” by Landon Young, Maroon and White Nation - Landon (also previously here at For Whom the Cowbell Tolls) took the time to go over which Mississippi State players you should keep an eye on as the Bulldogs take on LSU. You should take a gander at what he has to say on this matter.

 81.
“Mississippi State Football: 5 LSU players who could be a problem for Bulldogs” by Landon Young, Maroon and White Nation - Oh, he also took the opportunity to go ahead and list out which LSU players you’ll probably want to watch. That’s also something you should go ahead and read up on. Check this one out as well.

 82.

 83.
Today’s Tunes:

 84.

 85.
I’ve featured Jamestown Revival on this here website in the past and I want it to be clear that I thoroughly enjoy their work. They’re remarkable talents, are incredible songwriters, and put together music that is thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. Check them out at your earliest convenience.

 86.

 87.
I’d be willing to guess that Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson are more musically talented than at least 99% of everyone that has ever walked the earth. I feel comfortable making that sort of statement. There’s been a lot of folks to walk this here earth. Not everyone has been all that talented. These two guys, on the other hand, are very talented.

It’s been even longer since I’ve published one on this here website. So let’s do some news and notes.

He’s incredibly creative and does a great job of sharing his voice wherever and whenever he writes. I fully endorse reading anything he publishes. I know I plan on it. Oh, also, well, this weekend is a huge opportunity for Mississippi State to get a huge win. Don’t take my word on it. Go read Evan’s words.

 113.
“Mississippi State football fans sound off on upcoming LSU game” by Ethan Lee, The Underdog Tribune - OK, so, yeah, this one is my work. I like engaging with folks online and getting their thoughts on various matters. This is a way for me to share what y’all think about the upcoming Mississippi State-LSU game. 135.
Today’s tunes:

 136.

 137.
I love Flatland Cavalry. They make good music. Really good music, in fact. Stuff I think you should listen to. Sure, they like Texas Tech, but don’t let that take away from the fact that their work is solid and their songwriting is brilliant. I’ve seen them live. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

 138.

 139.
Yes, this is the Hokey Pokey. We’re going to listen to it today. It’s one of my son’s favorite songs. This version is fantastic. It has no business being as good as it is. So let’s listen. It’s a classic.

 140.

 141.
OK, back on topic a bit. Let’s focus and finish strong. Like with Caamp’s Apple Tree Blues. It’s delightful and pleasant to listen to. I’ve seen these guys perform as well and they definitely put on a fun show.

 153.
College football schedule, Week 2: 11 games to watch this weekend

 154.

 159.

 160.
 161.
Mississippi State and Arizona are playing a late game. What other contests should you watch this week?

Hey, look, college football! We’ve got college football games to watch!

 162.
Yes, there’s the Mississippi State football game against the Arizona Wildcats that is a must watch sort of affair. But there are other games that will be fun too. So let’s take a look at some contests that you should check out.

 163.
After what is obviously most important game of the week, these games aren’t really stacked up in any particular order. Not by importance and not by scheduling. Just randomly assorted. But the first game is clearly the most important. You should watch it. Absolutely. 100% mandatory.

 164.

 165.

 166. Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Arizona Wildcats - This is the most important game of the week. Well, for us at least. We need to watch this one. Absolutely. Must watch. It’s going to be a late game, and that’s something to consider, but it’s still something you should try and watch (even if it’s via your DVR).

 167.

 168. Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Texas Longhorns - OK, this game probably won’t be much of nothing to watch. But it’ll be a little interesting to see if there is a gulf of talent and development existing between these two programs. Alabama is the best in the country. Is Texas back? Let’s watch and see what happens.

 169.

 170. Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Arizona State Sun Devils - Early nonconference matchups can lead to interesting games now and then. Oklahoma State’s offense is really good. The Cowboys also gave up a ton of yards and points to Central Michigan. Let’s see if there’s anything that Arizona State can do here.

 171.
Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Houston Cougars - Dana Holgorsen likes to Raid the Air. Mississippi State likes to Raid the Air. Texas Tech is historically a place that likes to Raid the Air. Let’s watch some football (and a game that actually could be pretty interesting).

 172.

 173. Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Georgia Southern Eagles - So, the Nebraska Cornhuskers should be able to just run away with this one, but nothing is a given right now. And if the Huskers somehow get humbled by the Georgia Southern Eagles, then things will get WEIRD in a hurry for Scott Frost and the folks in Lincoln.

 174.

 175. Oregon State Beavers vs. Fresno State Bulldogs - I like Oregon State this year. I think the Beavers can introduce a ton of chaos to the Pac-12 and I like watching underdogs. I REALLY want to see just how good this Oregon State team can be.

 176.

 177. Kansas State Wildcats vs. Missouri Tigers - The Kansas State Wildcats sure seem like an interesting team this season. They’re a team I plan on keeping up with throughout the year (and I’ll be writing about them over at The Underdog Tribune from time to time this year along with my Mississippi State coverage) at times this year because of how interesting I think they can be.

 178.

 179. South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Arkansas Razorbacks - Let’s see just how good Spencer Rattler is and if he can elevate the South Carolina Gamecocks much this season. If so, then maybe they’ve got a very real shot at beating the Arkansas Razorbacks. Maybe we’ll see a competitive game. Or maybe we watch KJ Jefferson and the Razorbacks just run right through South Carolina’s defense.

 180.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. Vanderbilt Commodores - How good are the Vanderbilt Commodores? They’re off to a solid start, but can they keep that up against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons? This one could be interesting if Vanderbilt can keep its momentum rolling.

 181.

 182. Kentucky Wildcats vs. Florida Gators - Let’s see just how good each of these teams happen to be. For some reason, some folks are really buying the Wildcats this year. I’m not as sold on them being great. I think 8 wins is feasible, but I don’t know if they have a team that is quite good enough to make a splash like they did last year. Meanwhile, Billy Napier has the Gators rolling in the right direction. How quickly can he get them back on their feet?

 183.

 184. Baylor Bears vs. BYU Cougars - If you happen to need another late night game to watch to help you stay awake, take a gander at the Baylor Bears and the BYU Cougars. I’m fascinated in what Baylor can be this year and I want to know if they can sustain their recent run of success.

 185.

 186.
Which games will you be watching this week?

 198.
4 ways to prepare for Mississippi State football vs. Arizona Wildcats

 199.

 202.
 203.
Photo by Chris McDill/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

 204.

 205.
 206.
We’ve got a late game happening this week. How are you planning on staying awake?

 207.
Are you ready for the second Mississippi State football game of the season? This week, the Bulldogs are facing off against the Arizona Wildcats in what should be a pretty interesting contest.

 208.
Arizona has heavily overhauled its roster and the Wildcats could be pretty interesting to keep up with this season. But, who knows if all of those transfers will equal instant success and if the Wildcats will be able to keep up with the Bulldogs this week.

 209.
Making this game infinitely more interesting (and potentially a whole lot weirder) is the fact that Mississippi State and Arizona are slated for a 10 p.m. kickoff.

 210.
That means we’re going to be up LATE! Very very late. Well, those of us who want to watch all of this game will be up late. Some of us might turn in a little early. But, for those of us who are intent on watching all of this one, we should probably prepare a bit.

 211.
So, let’s go over some strategies to prepare yourself for an absurdly late kickoff.

 212.
No. 1: Take a nap

 213.
This is simple, straightforward, and sure to work. Take a page out of my toddler’s playbook and take a nap. Get some rest. You deserve some sleep and you’ll almost certainly need it as this particular Mississippi State football game is going to be a LATE one.

 214.
No. 2: Invest in some caffeine

 215.
Whether it’s a bunch of coffee or you choose to drink Mountain Dew by the gallon, you’ll probably need some caffeine. If you don’t need something sugary and caffeinated to watch the Bulldogs face off against Arizona, I’m completely and totally impressed. I just don’t have that sort of energy anymore.

 216.
No. 3: Go to bed at like 6p.m.

 217.
Again, it’s worth noting that Mississippi State and Arizona kick off at 10 p.m. Maybe it’s not a bad idea to get some sleep shortly before the game gets started? I don’t know how feasible this one is, I’m running out of ideas, to be completely honest with you.

 218.
So, maybe try getting some sleep right before the game is supposed to start! This will certainly mess with your sleeping schedule for the rest of the week and you might regret it if you’re up at like 3 a.m. and aren’t tired.

 219.
No. 4: Accept your fate and set your DVR

 220.
Okay look there’s a very good chance that some of us will fall asleep on the couch or pass out in our favorite recliner while watching the Bulldogs. Some of us aren’t as young and energetic as we used to be. That said, you should be fully prepared in case that happens! Set your DVR and be ready to record the game so that you can watch it again later!

 221.
So, what are you going to do to help stay up this week?

 239.

 240.
 241.
Look, weather delays stink. Here are 15 things to do to help you pass the time.

Look, we don’t have this blog around for all that much longer, but we still have some time left with it. So, since I’m planning to be here until the lights shut off and there’s currently time to kill as Mississippi State and Memphis are in a weather delay, let’s figure out what we’re going to do.

 242.
So, you know, here are 15 things you can do during a weather delay.

 243.

 244.
Visit the concessions stand (if you’re actually at the game in Starkville)

 245.
Check a weather radar or report

 246.
Watch another football game (Florida and Utah are in a fun, competitive contest right now! Check that out. Or maybe go watch Alabama beat up on Utah State? I don’t know, there are other games on right now. Would you rather watch New Mexico and Maine)

 247.
Go to YouTube and watch highlights from the 2016 Mississippi State - Texas A&M game

 248.
Watch an episode or two of Justified on Hulu (if you’re at home and waiting for the weather to pass)

 249.
Leave the game and go visit one of the bars or restaurants I suggest right here (my mother-in-law, who lives in Memphis, is visiting and she’d never been to Starkville before) and then watch the remainder of the game from there or listen to it on the radio on your drive home.

 250.
Check Twitter

 252.
Check Facebook

 253.
Watch another episode of Justified (this weather delay is never going to end, is it?)

 254.
Seriously, check out this Utah-Florida game (if you love defense, this game is pretty great)

 255.
Call your mom or an old friend. Your loved ones deserve to hear from you. This is just good, general life advice.

 256.
Check the weather radar again and get upset that this weather is impacting the game.

 257.
Check the kickoff time for Boise State and Oregon State

 258.
Find some caffeine (it’s going to be a late night for anyone staying up to watch this game)

 259.

 280.
For Whom the Cowbell Tolls is getting shut down at the end of September. This part of our journey is, unfortunately, coming to an end.

For Whom the Cowbell Tolls is getting shut down at the end of September. This part of our journey is, unfortunately, coming to an end.

 281.
SB Nation and the folks in power have decided that it’s time to move on from For Whom the Cowbell Tolls. We’re not the only site that’s being impacted by this decision. There are others as well.

 282.
The good folks over at Cowboys Ride for Free, Team Speed Kills, Big East Coast Bias, and Against All Enemies are all being impacted by this choice as well. And of course, all of the communities that have rallied around these blogs over the years are losing out in addition to that.

 283.

 284.

 285.
For Whom the Cowbell Tolls is getting shut down, which really sucks

I’ll have a lot more thoughts on the matter later (probably tomorrow), but it just really sucks to see something that so many people worked hard to build end up being shut down
— The Underdog Tribune (@UnderdogTribune) August 30, 2022
 286.

 287.
 288.

 289.
That’s a lot of people. That’s a lot of frustration and heartbreak caused by this decision.

 290.
While I don’t know all of the journeys that folks at other sites have gone through, and I don’t know everyone who has made their way through FWtCT at some point or another, I’ve spent a few years being attached to this site.

 291.
Charlie Burris, Justin Sutton, and Cristilmethod all had the unfortunate honor of dealing with me all the way back in April 2015. They, for some reason or another, gave me a shot at this whole writing business. For some reason, they thought I was worth having around. And because of that opportunity, a lot of great things came out of it for me.

 292.
I don’t say this lightly. The trajectory that this site put me on led to me meeting my wife and us ultimately having our son. It’s been incredible what all that opportunity back in 2015 has afforded me.

 293.
Without FWtCT, the past 7-and-a-half years of my life are radically different.

 294.
I’ve made many friends along the way (and possibly angered a few folks here and there). It’s impossible to name everyone I’ve had the pleasure of working with, so if I don’t list your name, please forgive me. I’m doing my best here and sometimes my best isn’t always all that it’s cracked up to be.

 295.
That said, I do want to highlight the impact that folks like Daniel Black, Justin Strawn, and Ladd Ezell have had on my life. They’ve been friends who interacted with me here and have stuck with me over the years.

 296.
I’m grateful for them and I’m grateful for each member of this community that has stuck around over the years. Y’all have been incredible in terms of support and the grace that y’all have extended for each stumble we’ve made along the way. It’s been a pleasure to connect with so many people along the way.

 297.
After my time as the managing editor from May 2016 to May 2017, I took a little bit of time off and then got right back to it as an editor. That lasted until March 2018, when I ultimately headed on over to FanSided and started my journey with them.

 298.
I still missed this site though. I missed the community and the internet fun. Stuff like #AlwaysRunNeverPass and Hey Shep, Hail State and all of the nonsense in between that made being a Mississippi State blogger so enjoyable.

 299.
A number of things happened in my personal life, such as meeting my wife, marrying her, starting a career in actual journalism and subsequently moving to Omaha. In the midst of all of that, we had a kid and adopted a dog (not in that order), I launched The Underdog Tribune (which is my own Mississippi State sports blog), I started grad school and had to subsequently drop out because money ran out and then I started grad school again.

 300.
I left traditional journalism for familiar blogging opportunities and a slightly less stressful career path. I recently got the chance to return all the way back to my roots here. The site needed a little help and Landon wanted someone with familiarity for things and I wanted a chance to help build the site back up again.

 301.
Unfortunately, we won’t get the chance to develop this site in the way we were hoping to.

 302.
A difficult decision was made above us and now we’re trying to figure out what exactly is next for all of us.

 303.
I’ll be here until they turn the lights off and take away my key.

 304.
After that, all of my blogging energy and internet fun will be headed to the aforementioned The Underdog Tribune. Y’all are more than welcome to follow along, or I suppose we can say goodbye at the end of this coming month. Whichever y’all prefer. I understand either way.

 305.
I’m just grateful for what this site has done for my life and to have had the chance to put words down on a screen. There’s a great number of great memories and great people who have impacted my life because of this site.

 306.
I’ll forever be grateful for all this community has brought me. I’m grateful for all of the grace that y’all have given me. I’m grateful for the fact that occasionally y’all thought I was a little witty and sometimes funny.

 307.
Some folks were even convinced I ever had a clue as to what I was doing. I’m not sure how that happened, to be completely honest.

 308.
I’m seeing this through until the end of the coming month, if at all possible.

 309.
And then after that, this part of our journey will come to an end. If there are any writers who need any help finding a place to land, I’ll gladly do what I can to get them into the best spot possible. Even if that means helping them build their own Mississippi State blog.

 310.

 311.

 312.
If you wrote at FWtCT and need help landing somewhere, let me know. I’ll gladly advocate for you and help you find somewhere to publish your work. Even if it means helping you build your own blog. I’ll help you do it.
— The Underdog Tribune (@UnderdogTribune) August 30, 2022
 313.

 314.
 315.

 316.
Thank you again to everyone who has joined me along the way. I don’t think any words I put down anywhere will ever do justice for the incredible impact y’all have had on me and my life.

 317.
I truly am grateful.
