20.
But we’re not going far, and you’re coming with us.

As you’re probably aware, Vox Media, the parent company of SB Nation of which Eyes On The Prize has been a part for many years, is ending its support for the majority of hockey sites on its network. Originally announced to end on February 28, that stay was extended to the end of March, giving us more time to plan our next steps.

 21.
The next phase involves a transfer of the EOTP domain and its full archive of articles, which dates back to 2009 when the site joined the network, and actually even earlier than that since the site had been established a couple of years prior, over to the current team of writers to take to a new platform.

 22.
Thanks wholly to the donations we received from you through our Patreon and GoFundMe campaigns, we have the means to set things up at a new home. With SB Nation beginning the necessary steps for the site transfers this evening, that move is going to happen today.

 23.
It’s all going to be a process. The archive probably won’t be available for a few days and some parts of the new operation are still under construction. But we have the two most important aspects taken care of: a new platform where we can publish articles, and a robust commenting system for everyone to discuss the latest happenings with the Montreal Canadiens.

 24.
Outside of switching to a new platform, little else will change on the editorial side. We’ll still have our usual Habs Headlines articles to start your day, Canadiens game previews, recaps of the Laval Rocket’s last-ditch attempt to make the AHL Playoffs, our Top Six Minutes posts that feature the best of your comments about the games, and we even have several NHL Draft profiles in the pipeline as attention is about to switch to the new crop of prospects the Canadiens will be adding to an already deep pool.

 25.
While we will soon be receiving this familiar habseyesontheprize.com domain, for now we’ll be running with a temporary one for the new site, making a seamless transition when the switch is complete.

 26.
Come join us, and your fellow EOTP community members, at https://www.habseotp.com/!

 53.
The injury occurred in the team’s game against the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night. He was a late scratch for Tuesday’s game, and now we know to expect him out for at least a few more games.

 54.
Dach has 14 goals and 24 assists in 58 games this season, his first with the Canadiens. His injury means that there is a bigger opportunity for Sean Farrell. The rookie will make his Bell Centre debut on Thursday night against the Florida Panthers. In practice, he skated with Jake Evans and Brendan Gallagher.

 55.
The other lines saw Nick Suzuki with Rafaël Harvey-Pinard and Mike Hoffman, Jonathan Drouin with Jesse Ylönen and Denis Gurianov, and Chris Tierney with Alex Belzile and Michael Pezzetta.

 81.
With a few minutes to go versus the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night, the playoff hopes of the Florida Panthers were hanging by a thread. Fortunately for them, it takes the merest tug for the Maple Leafs to unravel.

 82.
The Panthers were prevented from scoring a tying goal only by an illegal intervention from defenceman Mark Giordano. That just meant the 2019 Norris Trophy-winner got to sit down in the penalty box at Scotiabank Arena as Florida found that tying goal off the stick of Sam Reinhart.

 83.
The visitors had to weather a few chances from Toronto’s stars in overtime, but on one of those chances two attacking players got caught behind the play. A two-on-one went the other way, and Aleksander Barkov set up Brandon Montour for the game-winning goal.

 84.
Turning what was looking like a zero-point effort into a two-point result, Florida snapped a four-game losing streak, and came to a rest a single point back of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, with an additional game played.

 85.

 86.
As the Panthers make the trip from Toronto to Montreal for tonight’s match, we’re presented with a problem: the tanker’s dilemma. Do you want to see the Canadiens do their part to spoil Florida’s playoff aspirations and hope they end up in the draft lottery with a (minuscule) chance to move up 10 spots? Or would you rather see Montreal lose to help out their own cause of earning top-five odds while perhaps giving up that chance of another high selection?

 87.
If the first three games of the season series are any indication, the Habs may not have much say in the matter. They ended their regular-season slate with a 10-1 win a year ago, and the Panthers appear to have taken that personally, with three wins, none by fewer than four goals, in 2022-23.

 88.
A back-and-forth affair like the meeting on March 16 would at least provide solid entertainment if the Habs are to lose. Montreal was holding its own at the start of what ended up being a record-setting offensive display in the first period, but then Sergei Bobrovsky became corporeal and began turning aside the pucks shot his way. It was 7-3 after the opening 20 minutes, and the Canadiens were no closer at the end of the 9-5 contest.

 89.

 90.
It was Bobrovsky’s backup, Alex Lyon, who turned aside 38 of Toronto’s 40 shots last night. Normally a goaltender would sit the next game out, but it’s at the point of the season when desperate teams need to play their best hand every time, and Bobrovsky hasn’t been making the cut with three consecutive losses and a combined 13 goals against in those defeats. Head coach Paul Maurice said that Bobrovsky is in Montreal, dealing with a illness, and isn’t ruled out to start. Perhaps the coach is hoping a win at the Bell Centre will get his $10-million man going with so much at stake.

 91.
Brendan Gallagher will be eager to fire the puck at whoever gets the nod from Maurice, because his confidence is higher than it’s been in some time. He comes into tonight on a three-game goal-scoring streak, something he hadn’t achieved since the final handful of games in 2020-21.

 92.
His play is renewing confidence in his ability to still have an impact at the NHL level, which was in question at the start of this campaign. The good news for the 31-year-old energy forward is that his success has been coming via his shot from relatively long range by his career standard, rather than requiring him to jam away at the front of the net where he’s often gotten injured in recent years. The new style of offence fits Martin St-Louis’s system a lot better than the cycling game Gallagher used to thrive on, so perhaps there’s a new chapter in a story that appeared to be reaching an early end.

 154.
The Flyers have flown perhaps higher than they’d have preferred to.

Usually when you talk about four-point games, you’re hoping they’re of the variety where your team winning means a big gain for them over a rival in service of earning a playoff spot. This year, the Montreal Canadiens are unfortunately in a situation where it’s the polar opposite, and we’re looking for losses that improve or solidify their draft lottery odds.

 155.
They had such an opportunity against the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night, and did not disappoint any of the denizens of tank nation.

 156.
The good

 157.
Well, they lost, which as mentioned is effectively a four-point gain for the Flyers over the Habs in the standings. Philly remains in seventh-last, but now sit four points clear of the Tricolore, with two games in hand to boot. It would take some high quality tanking from the Flyers to get ahead of the Habs before the lottery.

 158.
Rafael Harvey-Pinard continued his scoring ways, we got our first glimpse at Sean Farrell in a Canadiens uniform, and Cayden Primeau had a decent outing in nets.

 159.
The bad

 160.
Overall, the game itself gave me about as much excitement as opening my annual property tax notice. I’m all for the team dropping games in service of solidifying their chances at a top-five pick, but I’d like a smidge more entertainment value than what I was given on Tuesday. This game felt like a bill that I had to pay, but hey, I’ll pay it seven more times if it means I get to see Connor Bedard in La Sainte-Flanelle.

 161.
Unfortunately, speaking of Bedard, it seems the Habs will have a tough time getting any better than the 8.5% chance they’ll have at his services should they finish fifth-last. They’re 10 points clear of the Anaheim Ducks as of this writing, so they really just need to focus on not allowing Arizona to knock them into sixth-last.

 162.
Lottery movement

 163.
Nothing to speak of. The Habs are still just a point behind Arizona, and no games in hand either way. It’ll come down to which of those teams can win the least from here out for fifth place.

 164.
Detroit did gain two points of their own, but unfortunately at the expense of the Pittsburgh Penguins, a team the Habs are hoping will keep the Florida Panthers pick in the lottery zone.

 178.
I’d have gone a little higher if the Penguins had done what they needed to do, but the Habs still get a 70% grade for kicking the Flyers a little further ahead in the standings. Up next is a tough one in terms of deciding who to root for, as the Habs will be playing the Panthers this Thursday night.

 198.
Laval Rocket

 199.

 200.
 201.
The Swede helped push the Rocket to another crucial win on the road.

After a sorely needed win on Sunday afternoon in Manitoba, the Rocket attempted to keep their playoff hopes alive against the Moose once again.

 202.
Laval saw two major losses heading into the game from Sunday’s win however. Cayden Primeau was an unexpected recall to the Montreal Canadiens, leaving Kevin Poulin to try to keep Laval afloat. Also missing was Brandon Gignac, who did his best to tough out Sunday’s game but was unable to play this contest.

 203.
Tuesday’s start was exactly what the Rocket wanted to see in a crucial game. Laval pushed the Moose back multiple times before breaking through with an odd-man rush. Peter Abbandonato flicked a pass into the slot for Joël Teasdale, who calmly pulled the puck to his forehand and fired it far-side for his 22nd goal of the season.

 204.

 205.

 206.
Joël Teasdale opens the scoring for the Rocket! pic.twitter.com/NWhZmQOlYU
— Scott Matla (@scottmatla) March 29, 2023
 207.

 208.
 209.

 210.
Poulin looked like a man in form as the period wore on from the opening goal. The Moose looking dangerous on a power play and the veteran netminder slammed the door shut to preserve the lead.

 211.
A late Rocket power play and a four-on-four sequence saw the period end with a number of interruptions and scrums. But thanks to the goaltending from Poulin and the Rocket attack looking dangerous, it was a lead that Laval took into the intermission.

 212.
As strong as the first period was for the Rocket, the second period was all Moose right from the opening faceoff. While Laval survived the opening minutes of the Moose pressure, the dam eventually showed a few cracks. Jansen Harkins got the Rocket defensive coverage crossed up, and from the upper slot he snapped a game-tying goal by Poulin.

 213.
The tie did not last long thanks to the red-hot Emil Heineman and Pierrick Dubé. It was Dubé darting in through the Moose defence and creating a rebound in front of goal. Heineman was all over the loose puck, rifling it over a sprawling goalie to restore Laval’s lead.

 214.

 215.

 216.
STAY HOT EMIL HEINEMAN!

The winger nets his third AHL goal of the year and it's 2-1 Laval! pic.twitter.com/YjbnaNyVhg
— Scott Matla (@scottmatla) March 29, 2023
 217.

 218.
 219.

 220.
That margin grew to a pair thanks again to the hard work of Dubé and Heineman deep in the offensive zone. Dubé kicked the play off with a shot that rebounded behind the net, then Mitchell Stephens grabbed it and put a pass into the slot for Heineman. The Swede continued his incredible form, firing a shot across his body and to the back of the net for a 3-1 lead.

 221.

 222.

 223.
Make it two goals for Emil Heineman tonight!

3-1 Laval pic.twitter.com/DD3LY36iK5
— Scott Matla (@scottmatla) March 29, 2023
 224.

 225.
 226.

 227.
Shortly after the Rocket goal, the Moose created a scramble deep in the Laval end, and it resulted in Tyler Boland drawing back a goal. However, Jayden Struble took a high-stick to the face shortly after the Moose goal, giving the Rocket a power play and a chance to restore their two-goal lead.

 228.
The man advantage added to an impressive period for Pierrick Dubé as he again was the catalyst for a goal. This time he grabbed the goal itself as he tried to backhand a pass on net for a redirect. His shot however, hit off a Moose stick in front of the net and slowly fluttered over the line.

 229.

 230.

 231.
Pierrick Dubé gets his third point of the game when his shot hits a Moose player and over the goal line.

4-2 Laval! pic.twitter.com/OKssH7OMqW
— Scott Matla (@scottmatla) March 29, 2023
 232.

 233.
 234.

 235.
Period three was played at a much more deliberate pace, with the Rocket inviting the Moose into the muck and mire in front of net, and then carefully clearing their lines over and over. It looked like the Rocket were going to grind down the clock, and they nearly did until the goals suddenly started appearing out of thin air.

 236.
First was Joël Teasdale finding a soft spot in the defence and taking a pass from Peter Abbandonato to score his second goal of the night to make it a 5-2 contest.

 237.

 238.

 239.
Joël Teasdale makes it 5-2 game for the Rocket with his second goal of the night! pic.twitter.com/C1GnAc6K36
— Scott Matla (@scottmatla) March 29, 2023
 240.

 241.
 242.

 243.
The Moose stormed right back, with Parker Ford getting his first professional goal off a deflected puck that he swatted past Poulin to keep the game interesting with seven minutes left to play.

 244.
The Moose eventually pulled their goalie to try to pull of the comeback. A stumble and turnover with the puck allowed Jan Mysak to fire the puck into the empty net and secure Laval another critical win on the road.

 245.
Final Score: Laval 6, Manitoba 3

 246.
Winning both games in Manitoba against a very tough Moose team was a huge boost for the Rocket, as any dropped points would have put a dent in their playoff hopes. The team continues its road trip on Friday as they head to Rockford for a game against the IceHogs.

 247.
Cayden Primeau will be back with the team after playing one game for the Canadiens in a 3-2 loss against the Philadelphia Flyers.

 314.
It was the 20th NHL game of Primeau’s career and 16th start, as he increased his record to 4-10-2. He had gotten into a game in relief earlier in the season, surrendering one goal to the Florida Panthers.

 315.
He will go back to Laval with a boost of confidence as the team desperately tries to make the post-season. On the same night he got his win, the AHL club completed a two-game sweep of the Manitoba Moose, keeping their playoff hopes alive. Primeau will likely be in the Rocket net on Friday night when the team plays in Rockford.
