20.
This feels weirdly like that moment when a hockey season is over, and the excitement for the coming season starts to seep in. Late June for a team that’s rebuilding and you believe it will be better next year. And yet it’s still sad that this is a kind of ending.

 21.
I went back and read the first real article I wrote for this site, something that is both amusingly overly hopeful and still ideologically valid. It’s from 2016 and is all about the Coyotes and how they have to be careful with their money vs the rolling in it Leafs, who can buy anything they want. Anything but a Cup, of course.

 22.
The Coyotes are still a mess — likely a worse mess — after all these years, and the Leafs have worked relentlessly to use their financial advantage to build a great team, weather a Pandemic, and survive with a salary cap that hasn’t budged in years while player salaries have risen unchecked.

 23.
I think they’ve done a good job in some very trying circumstances, and Kyle Dubas is a guy who I watch as a model of how to do business as much as for how he runs the Leafs. In a world that increasingly says you have to be an asshole to succeed, he just smiles and laughs and does things his way. Which appears to be to put people first as much as possible.

 24.
As for PPP, there’s lots of stories yet to write, lots of games yet to be played and lots of people to read them, to watch them and to talk about them, so nothing is changing except everything.

 25.
Here’s what’s happening:

 26.

 27.
This site in this form will freeze up sometime on or before April 1, but likely the evening of March 30.

 28.
The new, fresh scent PPP, is available right now at https://pensionplanpuppets.ghost.io/
 29.

 30.
At some point in the coming days the new site will pick up the phone if you dial the old URL. I just can’t tell you exactly what day.

 31.
Please don’t ask for technical assistance in this post. I’m not going to be checking comments here. Please use the comments or contact form on the new site.

 32.

 33.

 34.
Come on in, the water is fine. There’s stories there, and soon all the archives dating back to the origins of PPP will be there as well. We’ve got games this weekend to watch together. The puck has dropped on a new season of PPP. You’d be a fool to miss out.

 54.
 55.
Good news for a couple teams and a real big scoop of pain for another one

Good morning Maple Leafs fans!

 56.
It was a big day for the OHL community, with the host of the 2024 Memorial Cup being announced and the 2023 draft lottery was held as well.

 57.
First, the Saginaw Spirit will host the 2024 Memorial Cup. They beat out the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Niagara IceDogs, and Kingston Frontenacs for the right to host the national junior hockey championship.

 58.
They had two things going for them that the others were missing: They made the playoffs this year, and they have exceptional player and potential 2024 first overall pick Michael Misa playing for them.

 59.
The chance to have eyeballs on Misa in his NHL draft year may have been too much for the Canadian Hockey League and broadcaster TSN to pass up. He's not Conor Bedard but he'll have all eyes on him come September, after Bedard is drafted this year.

 60.

Congratulations to the Saginaw Spirit, the first American team to host the Memorial Cup since the Western Hockey League Spokane Chiefs had it in 1998.

 61.
After losing out on the Memorial Cup, those three teams had their eyes on the OHL Draft Lottery.

 62.
The Niagara IceDogs were dead last in the league for the second straight year, so they had the best shot at first over all (40%). Then the Erie Otters (30%), Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (20%), and Kingston Frontenacs (10%) followed up.

 63.
Just like last year, the IceDogs lost the lottery to the second worst team (Saginaw Spirit) and the Erie Otters have the first overall pick in this year's draft.

 64.

It's not all terrible news for Niagara. They have the second overall pick and fifth overall pick this year. They have the fifth pick as compensation for their 2022 first rounder refusing to sign with them. He went to the London Knights, shockingly.

 65.

Oh, and one last note about last year's OHL draft....

 104.
I’m not convinced the Leafs are going to skate 12/6 tonight, mostly because it doesn’t seem certain Acciari will play. Barring that and Liljegren coming in, the lines are posted in the Preview.

 105.

Between our last meeting with the Panthers, they lost to the Senators, clinching the Leafs a playoff berth. With a win for Toronto tonight, they’ll be 8 magic numbers (points gamed or opponent points lost) to clinch second place in the Atlantic over Tampa Bay. There’s a good chance that clinching happens on April 11th when the two teams play each other. As for clenching, that happens after.

 106.
As for the Panthers themselves, they’re three points out of a wild card spot and will be fighting hard to get into the show over Pittsburgh and with Buffalo on their heels. It’s a wide open race for the wild card spots.

 128.
The Leafs last game was an away game on March 26 against the Nashville Predators, which Toronto won by a score of 3-2. The Leafs have a record of 44-20-9 so far.

 129.
The Florida Panthers last played an away game on March 27 against the Ottawa Senators. The Panthers lost by a score of 5-2, and their current league record is 36-31-7.

 130.
Them

 131.
Was that loss to Ottawa the end of any hope of playoffs? Florida is three points behind Pittsburgh with each team having eight games to go. That’s a tough job to get three more points than the Penguins in so few games.

 138.
The Leafs are five points ahead of Tampa with two games in hand. Believing the Lightning can take over second place involves a level of pessimism that is pathological. The Leafs are coasting to the end of the season, and job one is to not get hurt.

He’s so cute."

via samsonov_30 on Instagram pic.twitter.com/bvsXenR87l
— Mark Masters (@markhmasters) March 28, 2023

 171.

 172.
Also at practice were discussions about Ryan O’Reilly and his potential return to the lineup. As “thehumourisironic” has said in comments recently, ROR can’t return from LTIR until his 10 games and 24 days is completed. 10 games was completed over the weekend, and assuming ROR was put on LTIR on March 5th, today would be the 24th day. That means he’ll be eligible to return to the lineup on Saturday in Ottawa or after. Does Sheldon Keefe include the weekend when he says “week”? I guess we’ll find out.

 173.

 174.

 175.
Sheldon Keefe on Ryan O'Reilly: "I would call him unlikely to play this week, but I know that hasn’t been ruled out necessarily. But I think the plan is more to ramp him up through this week & look more towards next." https://t.co/1J3V7bcrGK
— Mark Masters (@markhmasters) March 28, 2023

 178.

 179.
Keefe also acknowledged Timothy Liljegren’s great season up to this point and gave his confidence that the young defenseman will work through the adversity. It’s not an easy path for Liljegren to reach the top-six for the playoffs, but he has a fair chance.

 180.

 181.

 182.
Keefe's message to Liljegren: "I want Lily to focus on the fact that he’s been an excellent d-man for us all season & there’s a little bit of adversity here now & we want to help him through it."

Coach points out 11-&-7 can be tricky for younger guyshttps://t.co/0s732xUd58
— Mark Masters (@markhmasters) March 28, 2023

 184.
 185.

 186.
I agree with Auston, having the creativity is one thing, but the willingness to try things is an entirely different skill. Trust me, as a teacher by day I know this too well. Mitch Marner has it in spades.

 187.

 188.

 189.
Auston Matthews on this Mitch Marner header pass on Sunday:

"I had to take a second look ... He was chuckling when we got back to the bench asking us if we saw it ... just thinking outside the box ... the creativity & willingness to pull it off is pretty special."

— Mark Masters (@markhmasters) March 28, 2023
 190.

 191.
 192.

 193.
Here’s something to gnaw on for today. Michael Bunting is going to be a very highly sought after commodity this summer. Mike Johnson thinks he’ll get six years at $4 million AAV. Is that out of the Leafs price range? Maybe not? Should the Leafs spend it? Ask me after the playoffs.

 194.

 195.

 196.
"I've talked to teams around the league that like Bunting and would give him term... I think if he goes to market him getting a 6-year $24M contract is not out of the question."@mike_p_johnson on what a potential extension for Michael Bunting might look like. #LeafsForever pic.twitter.com/tzYVhwOOuG
— OverDrive (@OverDrive1050) March 29, 2023
 197.

 198.
 199.

 200.
Not to be too controversial, but I can’t imagine looking at this and wanting to sign Jack Campbell to a long-term extension. A 40-goal difference in Dubas’ goaltending decisions has helped the Leafs out massively in a season where Auston Matthews has merely been average.

 201.

 202.

 203.
Probably safe at this point to conclude that the Leafs did not, in fact, downgrade their goaltending. pic.twitter.com/qoBnaKytlE
— Micah Blake McCurdy (@IneffectiveMath) March 28, 2023
 204.

 205.
 206.

 207.
Also from Micah, the Leafs are only really behind Boston, who breaks the scale, and Carolina when it comes to average goal differential over the course of a game. The Leafs get the lead, keep it, and do very well with it. They look a degree above Tampa Bay, which is also interesting to think about.

 208.

 209.

 210.
Average score difference, by minute.

Cute how Florida (mostly above but v. close to zero in the end) neatly mirrors Ottawa.

(with thanks to @iyer_prashanth, who did it first) pic.twitter.com/3tiJ4tex5B
— Micah Blake McCurdy (@IneffectiveMath) March 28, 2023

 253.
 254.
They’re playoff bound, though we already knew that.

It’s always fun when your team clinches without doing anything. The Maple Leafs were all at their homes last night eating pasta casserole and playing video games or spending hours watching TikTok videos when the news broke that because some other team won or lost, they were officially in the playoffs.

 255.

 260.

 261.
So now that’s out of the way, the Leafs play the waiting game, oh and also eight more regular season games, one of which is against the Lightning, which will be the most interesting to watch, while for the others we simply hope no one is injured.

 262.
The next game is tomorrow against the Panthers here in Toronto.

 263.
ICYMI

 322.
The countdowns are on

Good morning Toronto Maple Leafs fans!

 323.
The clock is ticking down to the playoffs, as well as our time here at SB Nation coming to an end.

 324.
Also to my dog finally realizing I'm awake and he starts poking me with his nose to go for his morning walk. It's a race against time.

 325.
On the site news, we have five more days until we are shoved out of the nest, whether we can fly or not. Thankfully things behind the scenes are flapping their wings and the mother bird is vomiting the information into our mouths and this metaphor is getting gross. Things are working is what I mean.

 326.
There's some more info coming out later today for you to make the transition smooth and painless.

 327.

The playoff clocks are all hitting midnight at different times, so a quick rundown.

 328.
For the Newfoundland Growlers, their season ends April 15th, and they've already qualified. As of right now, they would play the Worcester Railers in round one.

 329.
The Toronto Marlies end their season on April 16th after a two game homestead against the Belleville Senators.

 330.
The Marlies have qualified for the AHL playoffs and right now would start off against the Rochester Americans.

 331.
The Leafs haven't technically qualified for the playoffs yet, but we've known for months they'll play the Tampa Bay Lightning in round one, barring a major collapse by either team.

 332.
The Leafs season ends with a trip to Madison Square Garden on April 13th. Nine more games.

 333.
Speaking of games, the Leafs beat the playoff hopeful Nashville Predators last night.

 334.

Auston Matthews is the man we all know and love once again.
