21.
Amazingly, the Ottawa Senators are still in the race for that second wildcard spot in the Eastern conference.

 22.
Though I’m not sure you can call it much of a race at this point. Rather than a finish line, that wildcard berth is more like a black hole, slowly pulling teams toward it, in spite of their efforts to resist it at all costs. How else do you explain the Sens going 3-6-1 in their last 10 games and still having a chance to qualify? Are teams that afraid of Boston?

 23.
Despite being a bad team overall, the Philadelphia Flyers, tonight’s opponents, are on a four-game winning streak, including victories over the Panthers and Wild. After a 3-2-1 stretch against playoff and Cup contenders, the Sens can’t afford to play down to their competition for a third time this month.

 24.
Below are the lines from the morning skate. Head coach D.J. Smith hasn’t confirmed a starter but signs point to Cam Talbot, who hasn’t played since March.

 31.
Game Notes:

 32.

 33.
Thomas Chabot will miss the next few weeks with an upper-body injury suffered against the Panthers on Monday. With only eight games left, it’s likely he’ll be done for the regular season – if so, he’ll miraculously have played under 25 minutes a night for 2022-23.

 34.
With an open spot on the blueline, Tyler Kleven will make his NHL debut tonight. A second-round selection from 2020 and one of three University of North Dakota alumni currently on the roster, the 6’4 left shot had a relatively productive junior year of college with 18 points in 35 games. Look for him to make an impact in a more literal sense tonight, on a pair with Nick Holden.

 35.
Much like the Senators, the Flyers have dealt with injury woes all year long. In particular, Travis Konecny, with 54 points in 52 games, has been out with an upper-body injury since February 11th.

 36.
Amidst the tough stretch of games featuring Toronto, Boston, New Jersey, Tampa Bay, Florida, and Pittsburgh, Ottawa’s shot metrics have been trending downwards, with their 5-on-5 expected goals falling to below 50 percent for the first time in a while. The good news is that their shooting percentage has regressed upwards to compensate – they’re no longer cursed, thank goodness.

 37.
Today’s a big day for the out-of-town scoreboard, with Pittsburgh, Florida, and Washington all in action as well. A best-case scenario would see Ottawa just three points back of the playoffs.

 38.
It’s a 7:00 PM EST start tonight, and the game is available on RDS2, TSN5, and TSN1200.

 39.

 64.
Time for some new digs

At long last, Silver Seven is moving. As of this post going live, 10 AM Eastern, our new site is up and running. You can find it here:

 65.
https://silver-seven.ghost.io/

 66.
As part of the agreement that we signed with SB Nation, we are keeping our name, our URL and all of the related IP. This is great news and we couldn’t be happier to continue writing for this wonderful community.

 67.
However, because of some timing issues that are beyond our control, there will be a (hopefully brief) period of time where the two versions of the site will be running concurrently. Eventually silversevensens.com will re-direct to our new domain, so don’t erase your bookmarks just yet, but for now all of our new content will only be accessible at https://silver-seven.ghost.io/. We will no longer be able to write any new posts on this version of the site as of this evening.

 68.
With the new site now live, and the accompanying commenting system a go, we are moving all of our game coverage of tonight’s match-up with the Philadelphia Flyers to the new site. The Gameday Thread will be hosted there, and that’s where the recap will be posted as well.

 69.
We hope to see you there!

 70.
At the New Site

 71.
From a content standpoint, all of the good stuff that you’ve been reading here for so many years will continue. This new beginning is also an opportunity for us to explore some new ideas that we believe will make the site even better. We are very excited to share what’s coming next with you.

 72.
When you access the new site, you will need to sign up if you want to comment. The process is remarkably simple: just hit “Subscribe” in the top right or bottom right hand corners. You’ll be prompted for an e-mail address, and you should receive a communication from Silver Seven shortly thereafter. Just follow the link in the message et voilà!

 73.
We are very happy with our new commenting platform and we hope to see the same vibrant conversations that we’ve come to expect on the current site. Please let us know if you are experiencing any difficulties in getting set up.

 74.
For now, all of the articles are free to read and comment on. We have not yet finalized our plan for the future funding of the site but we are most likely headed towards a freemium model where most articles will be free, while some will be behind a modest paywall. We will of course communicate any changes of this nature well in advance.

 75.
On the downside, we no longer have access to Getty Images, so some articles will be published without a picture. We are searching for an alternative arrangement to the (extremely) pricey licensing agreement with Getty.

 76.
The website’s appearance is also something of a work in progress. While we are happy with what we’ve achieved in such a short period of time, we know there’s more work to do. We thank you for your continuing support and patience.

 77.
Lastly, our entire archive will be transferred, but without images, and again, not right away. We are hopeful this process also won’t take too long. We will also not be able to transfer FanPosts or comments. We’re very sorry about that, but these are the unfortunate technical realities.

 78.
Thank You

 79.
The incredible support that the community has shown us is the only reason that we can set out on our own at all. This support has come in several forms: for instance, many of you responded to our survey, which has proven invaluable in our planning for the future of the site. We have also been overwhelmed by the generosity of the financial support through our GoFundMe. The money raised has enabled us to move towards creating the site we’ve always dreamed of.

 80.
Thank you, again, and see you all soon on the “new” site!

 81.

 104.
The Ottawa Senators, despite the long odds and mounting injuries, are still battling for their play-off lives. We dive into that, and beyond in our latest edition of Links, News, and Notes:

 105.

 106.
Both Thomas Chabot and Claude Giroux missed yesterday’s practice, and though Giroux’s absence was related to a minor illness it would appear Chabot is likely to miss the remainder of the season. Considering the myriad ailments that have afflicted the rearguard, it’s probably in everyone’s best interests that he play it safe and take the rest.

 107.
Meanwhile, Ridly Greig was unexpectedly back at practice after the team had previously announced his season was done due to a sternum injury. In his media availability, DJ Smith said that Greig could play before the year is out. Not quite sure how to take that news, other than to say hopefully Greig stays healthy if he does return!

 108.
As the Sens ownership situation slowly comes into focus, a recent visit by Gary Bettman has re-opened the topic of arena location. While we all thought Lebreton Flats was set as the team’s home of the future, there are now some musings from both the league and the Mayor about possible alternate locations. Are these merely negotiating tactics or are they serious edicts?

 109.
After a string of controversial decisions by various players and teams, the NHL is reevaluating if they will continue the tradition of Pride nights — Bettman is quoted as saying they may be too much of a distraction. Regardless of anything else, it would be a shame if the league were to reverse course completely.

 110.
It’s not official but it’s looking more and more likely that Jonathan Toews will be leaving the Hawks and the game for good. He is trying to make a comeback for this season but after missing significant time in the past 2 years due to long COVID symptoms and illnesses, the 3-time Cup champion seems to be re-thinking his future in the NHL.

 111.
Justin Bieber is trying to use his Maple Leafs connections to break barriers in hockey. While I can’t say that I am a fan of his or his chosen team, his new ball hockey program is sure to draw more fans to the game and create a more accessible and inclusive environment.

 112.
While Hockey Canada is really taking its time with its investigation and not doing a great job with transparency, it is at least taking some small actions to hold the players under investigation accountable. Hockey Canada announced this week that any player on the 2018 will not be able to participate in international competition until the investigation is complete. With the World Hockey Championships not too far off, this provides at least some clarity on potential attendees.

 131.
 132.
The Belleville Senators lost back-to-back games this weekend, shrinking the odds they can make the postseason.

Despite looking absolutely fantastic in their Belleville Bulls throwback jerseys this weekend, the on-ice result for the BSens was less than ideal. Instead of recapping the losses, I want to outline a few stars from their pair of games while diving into what it’s going to take for Belleville to end up in a playoff spot.

 133.
Highlights of the Week

 134.
Throwback Jerseys

 135.
I know, it’s not a great sign when the first highlight of the week has to do with the teams attire but, I mean, look at these stunners:

 136.

 137.

 138.
What an honour last night was as the #BellevilleSens celebrated the strong legacy of the Bulls in a special 'History of Hockey' tribute.

Thank you to everyone who made last night possible and to all the alumni for coming out!#ForTheB pic.twitter.com/EAopgVfzp5
— Belleville Senators (@BellevilleSens) March 26, 2023
 139.

 140.
 141.

 142.
This weekend Belleville paid tribute to their former OHL team, the Bulls, inviting notable alumni to the game and not only having sweet jerseys for warmups, but playing the entire game in them. The BSens continue to nail the jersey game.

 143.
Antoine Bibeau

 144.
While he wasn’t able to carry Belleville to victory by himself, Bibeau stood on his head in Saturday’s loss to the Milwaukee Admirals, stopping 35 of the 37 shots he faced for a fantastic 0.946 SV%.

 145.
Jake Lucchini

 146.
Jake Lucchini continues to be one of the more consistent producers Belleville has ever had in a veteran addition. He had a goal and an assist, while throwing four shots on net against the Islanders.

 147.
Maxence Guenette

 148.
Like Lucchini, Maxence Guenette also had a goal and an assist this weekend to go along with seven shots on net. The right shot defender has turned into an offensive dynamo of late, compiling two goals and six assists over his last nine games.

 149.
The Play-off Hunt

 150.
As for the play-off hunt, we have bad news and we have good news. The bad news is that, as of writing this article on Tuesday, the BSens are currently in last place in the North Division. The good news is that the North Division has a play-in round built in, whereby the fourth and fifth place teams go head-to-head in a three game series, where the winner then faces the top team in the division.

 151.
As it stands today, the top team in the North is the Toronto Marlies —who are miles ahead of the competition with a 14 point lead on second place. Whatever team comes out of the play-in round will have a tall task ahead of them. But, continuing on the good news train, ending up in fifth place is very much in reach for Belleville.

 152.

 153.
 154.

 155.
It’s a virtual certainty that the top four teams in the division will be four of the five playoff teams, the question is just in what order as there’s a very slim gap between second and fourth. That leaves a battle for the fifth and final spot to Cleveland, Laval and Belleville - three teams which currently sit within a point of one another.

 156.
Heading to the end of the year, Cleveland has ten games remaining, Belleville and Laval have eight each. Looking at their schedules, Belleville appears to have the most difficult road to the end of the year. While the Monsters and Rocket have some tough games ahead, Belleville’s schedule includes four dates with the top seeded Marlies.

 157.
This year, Belleville has a 2-5-1 record against Toronto, including an 0-3-1 record in their last four meetings. Needless to say, it’s not going to be easy. Belleville has no games against the Rocket but two of their final eight are games will feature Cleveland. In fact, six of Belleville’s final seven games are either against the best team in the division or one of the two teams they’re competing with for the final spot.

 158.
If I’m Belleville, I’m trying absolutely anything - including throwing Leevi Meriläinen in for his AHL debut as soon as possible - to get this team their ticket to the play-in.

 177.
 178.
Some prospects get more playoffs than other prospects

The Belleville Senators find themselves on a three-game losing streak at about as bad of time as you could think of, and a lot of Ottawa’s other prospects have wrapped up their seasons so I apologize in advance for the slim pickin’s around these parts right now.

 179.
Prospect Team of the Week:

 180.
Forwards

 181.
Angus Crookshank had a goal on six shots in Belleville’s two losses this past week. Talk about a bright spot in an otherwise forgettable season in Belleville. Could Crookshank challenge for a spot in Ottawa out of camp next fall?

 186.
 187.

 188.
Zack Ostapchuk, unlike a lot of Senators prospects, has his sights set on a lengthy postseason run (and we hope a trip to the memorial cup). Ostapchuk had another solid week with two goals, one assist, and ten shots in three games while also earning the distinction of Winnipeg’s top defensive forward for the regular season. Ostapchuk along with Carson Latimer will enjoy home ice (pun intended) throughout the WHL playoffs.

 189.

 190.

 191.
Goal 2 for #20 #WPGvsMJ | #FeelTheFreeze pic.twitter.com/Zv2E3xBl5l
— z - Winnipeg ICE (@WHLWpgICE) March 23, 2023
 192.

 193.
 194.

 195.
Egor Sokolov had a goal on three shots in two games with Belleville this past week. I felt tempted to give this last forward spot to Roby Järventie who had seven shots but no points to show for his labours. At least a handful of promising young forwards put together decent campaigns in an otherwise dreadful and injury-riddled AHL season for the Sens.

 196.
Defence

 197.
Speaking of the injury-riddled BSens, Jonathan Aspirot continues to reclaim what remains of his season as he had a goal on two shots this past week. Aspirot’s return has provided a glimmer of hope for a Belleville team in need of any moral victories they can find down the stretch.

 198.

 199.

 200.
SOKO ➡️ ASPO #ForTheB https://t.co/ddHuozIDjd pic.twitter.com/LypVK8qW9a
— Belleville Senators (@BellevilleSens) March 26, 2023

 202.
 203.

 204.
Speaking of storylines the BSens can feel good about this season, how about my personal favourite defensive prospect in the Ottawa Senators system? Maxence Guenette had a goal and an assists to go with seven shots in two games this past week on Ottawa’s blueline. I realize Guenette’s numbers overall don’t jump off the page like you would expect from a top prospect (not that anyone else calls him that) but Guenette has put up such a quietly solid season in the AHL and seems to have established the same level of consistent play that made him indispensable in the QMJHL. Sleep on Max at your own risk, folks.

 205.

 206.

 211.
Goaltender

 212.
Shoutout to Kevin Reidler who made a solid 109 saves on 116 shots in three J20 playoff games this past week to cap off his renaissance 2023. Alas, I gave the title to Mads Søgaard this week who won two out of three starts in Ottawa and made a bunch of crucial saves against the Panthers last night in a game when Florida outshot the Sens and owned the five-on-five play. All told, Søgaard stopped 90 of 96 for one of his best weeks yet in Ottawa.

 214.
Silver Linings:

 215.

In the OHL (not that Tyler Boucher will play) the Ottawa 67s as you probably already know will have home ice throughout the playoffs. Hamilton (although Jorian Donovan also remains sideline with injury) and Guelph (Chandler Romeo) finished as sixth seeds in their respective conferences. Kitchener (Tomas Hamara) has a daunting task ahead of them as the eighth seed in their conference. While Ben Roger has concluded his OHL career following Kingston’s unsuccessful campaign and subsequent elimination from the postseason.

 240.
 241.
It was Florida’s fourth loss in a row

Both teams were hoping for a win to keep their fading playoff hopes alive. For much of the game, the Senators were the team that wanted it more, and when they didn’t, Mads Søgaard was up to the task in net. The Sens got goals from Brady Tkachuk, Erik Brännström, Alex DeBrincat, Tim Stützle, and an empty-netter from Shane Pinto to hand the Panthers their fourth-straight loss in a 5-2 game. Gustav Forsling had both goals for the Panthers, and Sergei Bobrovsky took the loss.

 242.
The Sens raced out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame, thanks to goals from Brady Tkachuk — on a great feed from Thomas Chabot — and then from Erik Brännström on the powerplay.

 254.

 255.
Yes, that was Josh Norris on the Twitter account, meaning we learned that Chabot is Chabdaddy, Tkachuk is Chuggy, and Brännström is also a short king for the team. And hey, Brännström now has as many goals (2) in his past three games as in his first 179. The Sens’ powerplay wasn’t done, as Alex DeBrincat scored in the second on a shot that he’s never going to miss from if he’s left there unmarked.

 261.

 262.
Gustav Forsling had taken a puck to the throat on the Brännström goal, but was definitely no worse for wear, scoring two goals in the game. The Panthers for their part carried the play for the second period, and got their first goal on Forsling’s point shot that took several deflections en route to eluding Søgaard. They probably deserved another, but Søgaard made one his 32 saves by using his huge frame to keep his pad against the far post:

 263.

 264.

 265.
What an effort from Mads Sogaard to keep this one out.

Holds the post and doesn't give up a bad bounce on this one. #Sens #GoSensGo pic.twitter.com/a1qryLO9mc
— Pesky Sickos (@PeskySickos) March 28, 2023

 267.
 268.

 269.
The powerplay managed to get one more, going 3/4 on the night, when Tim Stützle one-timed a pass from Travis Hamonic — who got some PP time protecting a late 3-2 lead — through Bobrovsky, who made 21 saves in the loss. There were times it was tense, but the Sens came out decidedly on top.

 270.
Notable Performances:

 271.

 272.
Søgaard looks unflappable back there now. I think even just a few days of rest did wonders for him. Rather than flailing, he seems to be tracking the puck and confident he’s gonna make most of the saves.

 273.
DeBrincat is funny in that there can be stretches I don’t notice him, but he’s always dangerous when he gets the puck in a shooting spot. That goal he scored was textbook.

 274.
Giroux got an assist on the Stützle goal. He now needs six points over the final eight games to hit 1000 for his career

 275.
Chabot left the game with an arm injury, but thankfully returned. We saw both the best of him (beautiful dangling to set up the opening goal) and the worst (bobbling the puck behind his own net to set up what should’ve been a goal) in tonight’s game. I still think the good greatly outweighs the bad with this guy, but I know there will always be some who disagree

 276.
I really dislike the Sportsnet crews for Sens games. Thank goodness we’ve got a couple TSN broadcasts this week after another game where it sounds like the commentators are cheering against Ottawa. We even got a nice three-minute monologue about how Stützle can’t complain about a guy going down easy to draw a penalty since he’s developed a reputation for it. Only like 47 more years they own HNIC rights, right?

 277.

 278.
Game Flow:

 310.
 311.
It’s another must-win game

While the odds are getting slimmer by the day, the Ottawa Senators will try to continue their push for a miracle for their last few games. If they do come up short, there remain many positives for the future of this team.

 312.
The Sens play their divisional rival Florida Panthers tonight, another team that is deep in the hunt so a win here is crucial. You might say it’s a “must-win” game.

 313.
Gary Bettman will be in attendance today so maybe the Sens will try to impress the big boss with a huge win. Will he be subjected to booing if he’s shown on the videoboard?

 314.
Mads Sogaard is expected to make the start with Cam Talbot nearing his return sometime this week.

 315.
Projected lineup for tonight:

 316.

 325.
Pre-Game Notes

 326.

 327.
Mathieu Joseph will be a game-time decision. If he’s able to go, that will be a boost to the roster that is suffering from multiple injuries.

 328.
Jakob Chychrun has a hamstring injury and is not expected to return for another 2-3 weeks; once again the Sens will really need to rally on defense but at least it’s not a long-term injury, although at this point I don’t think we see him back for much of the regular season.

 329.
While we’re all excited to see newcomer Tyler Kleven, he is not expected to play until at least Thursday.

 330.
The Panthers have a pretty similar power play to the Sens but where the Sens have the advantage as the Panthers penalty kill is not their best asset. The Sens will really need to try to capitalize on their power play opportunities tonight.

 331.
If the Sens lose tonight, there is a tiny bright spot: a defeat would keep the Leafs from clinching a play-off spot. On the other hand, a Sens win propels the Ontario rivals into the postseason.

 332.
You can catch the game at 7PM tonight on SN1, SNO or listen live on TSN1200.

 353.
Coming back from the weekend to look at some links, news, and notes in the hockey world

The Ottawa Senators return to action at home against the Florida Panthers tonight, but let’s begin the week with some links, news, and notes:

 354.

The Toronto Six took home the PHF’s Isobel Cup last night, their first championship in franchise history. They beat the Minnesota Whitecaps in a dramatic 4-3 overtime win, with Tereza Vanisova being the hero:

 355.

 356.

 357.
THE GOAL THAT ENDED IT AND GAVE THE TORONTO SIX THEIR FIRST ISOBEL CUP! pic.twitter.com/0bPSVMwpFk
— PHF (@PHF) March 27, 2023
 358.

 359.
 360.

 361.

It was great seeing Brian Burke be such a vocal ally for the LGBTQ+ community on Hockey Night in Canada. He has always been a huge supporter in that regard, and I appreciate that he called out players sitting out for religious purposes because he himself is Catholic and doesn’t see why that would change anything:

 362.

 363.

 364.
"It’s about saying this community is valuable and important and we want to honour them."

Brian Burke joined Ron MacLean to discuss Pride Nights across the NHL and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. pic.twitter.com/fFo3kiG4XM
— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) March 26, 2023
 365.

 366.
 367.

 368.

 369.
Trigger warning (assault): Arizona Coyotes minority owner Andrew Barroway has been suspended indefinitely by the NHL after he was arrested on a felony strangulation charge and a misdemeanour third-degree assault charge against his wife. It’s an extremely serious situation, and I hope justice is served. The details in the story are quite scary to read, and I hope his wife gets the help and safety she needs.

 370.
The Los Angeles Kings are the hottest team in the league, with points in 12 straight games, going 10-0-2 in that stretch. That’s a franchise record for them, and they now sit second in the Pacific Division, just two points behind the Vegas Golden Knights (98 to 96).

 371.

 372. Scott Powers at The Athletic ($) reported this quote from Bill Daly, which goes against many people rationalizing players not wearing Pride jerseys:

 373.

 374.

“We take all risks seriously, and this one is no different,” Daly wrote in an email to The Athletic. “Having said that, we have no information that would suggest there is any material threat that would exist (in Russia or otherwise) related to a Russian player participating in a club’s Pride activities.”

 375.
Seems pretty cut and dry to me, especially due to the fact that many Russian players have participated this season. It’s just sad that we even have to be talking about these things because it’s tiring.

 376.

 377.

 378. With the Boston Bruins' win on Saturday, they clinched the Atlantic Division. It had effectively been clinched for months, but now it is official. They have a whopping 57 wins in 73 games, and they need to win 6/9 in order to have the record of 63 wins. There’d be a big asterisk on that though because previous generations had ties and no shootouts, so it’s not totally a fair fight. Either way, what the Bruins are doing is incredible.

 379.

 380. The University of Michigan defeated Penn State in overtime last night, sending them to the Frozen Four. Michigan will play Quinnipiac, and the University of Minnesota will play Boston University in the semi-finals. It doesn’t start until Thursday, April 6th, and it runs for three days—if you love watching hockey with some crazy atmospheres, this is just for you. Some standouts to look out for include Matthew Knies, Logan Cooley, Brock Faber, and Jimmy Snuggerud from Minnesota, Drew Commesso, Lane Hutson, and Luke Tuch from Boston, Adam Fantilli, Luke Hughes, Rutger McGroarty, Frank Nazar, and Mackie Sameskovich from Michigan, and Collin Graf and Samuel Lipkin from Quinnipiac.
