46.
The Terps begin postseason play on Thursday.

Maryland men’s lacrosse ended its regular season on a whimper, losing “The Rivalry” to Johns Hopkins, 7-5, in a meek offensive performance. But with the regular season behind them, the Terps have a chance to add another win to their NCAA Tournament resume on Thursday against Penn State in their first postseason game of the year.

 47.
The game will begin at 8:30 p.m. and air on ESPNU.

 48.
What happened last time

 49.
Maryland and Penn State’s first meeting of the season took place on March 31. The Terps, ranked No. 12 in the country, entered the road matchup as the underdogs, as Penn State opened the season 7-1 and was ranked No. 4.

 50.
In the first half, Maryland looked like the worse team. Its offense struggled to generate quality looks and Penn State found soft spots in its defense, utilizing picks and ball movement.

 51.
The first half ended with the Nittany Lions holding an 8-4 advantage, with star attacker TJ Malone scoring three goals.

 52.
The Terps showed marginal improvement in the third frame, as their defense and goalie Logan McNaney settled into the game, allowing just two goals. Offensively, they found the net three times, one being a transition goal for defensive midfielder Nick Redd.

 53.
The tide of the game truly changed early in the fourth, as Luke Wierman won the first six faceoffs of the quarter.

 54.
The Terps proceeded to rattle off six unanswered goals, taking a 13-10 lead. Penn State got one back, but Maryland held on to win, 13-11, in one of its best performances of the season.

 55.
What’s happened since

 56.
Maryland turned its victory over Penn State into a three-game win streak, defeating Ohio State and Rutgers.

 57.
Against the Buckeyes, the Terps won a defensive battle, 8-7, on the back of one of Eric Spanos’ best games of the year, in which he scored four times.

 58.
The next week, Maryland’s defense completely shut down the Scarlet Knights, beating them 11-6. Logan McNaney made 15 saves, while Daniel Kelly posted a hat trick in relief of Daniel Maltz.

 59.
Maryland’s offense has not returned to the form it found in the second half against Penn State, though, which was never more apparent than in its regular season finale loss to Johns Hopkins.

 60.
The offense managed just four goals — with defensive midfielder George Stamos adding one — as the Terps lost, 7-5.

 61.
Meanwhile, Penn State followed its loss to the Terps with another heartbreaker, this time to Johns Hopkins. It let another halftime lead slip and lost in overtime, 9-8.

 62.
The Nittany Lions responded to the losses with three straight wins, though, during which their offense shined. First, they comfortably defeated Michigan, 14-8, behind five goals from TJ Malone.

 63.
Then they beat Rutgers twice in a row, first to close out their regular season, and then again in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament.

 64.
Penn State is regarded as a team inside the bubble by tournament experts, and will look to secure a spot by defeating the Terps.

 65.
Three Things to Watch

 66.
1. Can Wierman dominate again? The first matchup between Maryland and Penn State hinged on Wierman’s performance at the faceoff. In the first half, Penn State’s platoon of Colby Baldwin and Chase Mullins won eight of 13 first-half faceoffs. But as Maryland launched their second-half comeback, Wierman won 11 of 14, helping Maryland string goals together. The Terps will again look to their all-conference faceoff man to help give their struggling offense opportunities.

 67.
2. What will change offensively? It is no secret that Maryland’s offense struggled throughout the regular season, particularly toward the end. If the Terps hope to make a postseason run, their offense will need to find a spark. Exactly where that spark will come from remains to be seen.

 68.
“You don’t necessarily have to blow everything up,” head coach John Tillman said after the loss to Johns Hopkins, “but you certainly have some time to kind of look at all aspects and figure out, ‘hey, is there a way we can do it better?’”

 69.
3. NCAA Tournament implications. On the rating percentage index (RPI) rankings, the official tool the NCAA uses for deciding tournament seeding, Maryland is No. 7 and seen as a lock to make the tournament. However, the Terps can drop or raise their seeding in the Big Ten Tournament. Two wins could push them as high as No. 4, while a loss on Thursday could move them out of the top 10.

 162.

 163.
The 6-foot-2 junior hails from New Jersey and offers a similar skillset to Touré. She proved to be a relentless rebounder with the Wildcats, pulling down an average of 9.4 boards per game. Her scoring averages have also improved with each passing year, going from 1.7 points per game in her freshman season to 7.3 in her sophomore campaign to 8.3 in 2023-24. Dalce’s shooting percentages have also gone up since her freshman year (40.9 to 44.1). Notably, she averaged 2.3 blocks per game in her junior season.

 164.
At the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, Dalce was named Philadelphia Big 5 Most Improved Player and selected to the USA Basketball 2023 women’s 3x3 U21 team. Following the 2023-24 season, she was named to the All-Big 5 second team.

 165.
Maryland’s rotations should not change all that much following the addition of Dalce. She projects to slide into a forward rotation that already consists of current Terps Allie Kubek and Emily Fisher, as well as fellow transfers Isi Ozzy-Momodu and Amari DeBerry.

 166.
If the Terps can tap into the scoring potential of Dalce, in addition to her strong defensive abilities, the team’s versatility will position them to contend for a top spot in the Big Ten.

 185.

 186.
 187.
The Terps knocked home five runs in the eighth inning.

After some early fireworks, things settled down in the middle innings. Headed into the eighth inning, Maryland baseball and Towson were knotted at eight runs apiece.

 188.
Brandon Jung faced the first three Maryland hitters. Then, Towson head coach Matt Tyner turned to Kyle Emmons in the pen to face the red hot Sam Hojnar with two on base. Hojnar won the battle, slapping an RBI single to reclaim Maryland’s lead.

 189.
The Terps’ eighth inning didn’t end there. They proceeded to add four more insurance runs with two outs in the frame. Jacob Orr brought in Chris Hacopian with an RBI single and Hojnar walked home on a balk. Freshman Michael Iannazzo also sparked some magic with a two-run single.

 190.
Maryland ultimately held on to the lead, defeating Towson in its only matchup of the season, 13-8, on Tuesday.

 191.
“We won, I mean, it’s as simple as that, I was trying to be as positive as I could,” head coach Matt Swope said. “I thought that the offense was relentless.”

 192.
Ryan Van Buren started the midweek match on his birthday, a present from Swope. Van Buren was Maryland’s midweek starter for the first eight weeks of the season, but he did not receive starts the past two weeks. Tuesday was his chance to make a statement.

 193.
Hojnar continued his hot streak, knocking a solo home run in the top of the first. But Van Buren quickly lost the lead when Jordan Peyton tied the game with a solo shot. Maryland recaptured the lead in the second when Elijah Lambros drove in Kevin Keister with an RBI groundout.

 194.
The bottom of the second wasn’t too pleasant for Van Buren. He gave up a two-run triple to Devan Barnett and an RBI bloop single to Jeremy Wagner, gifting Towson a two-run lead. Swope immediately ended Van Buren’s tenure on the mound, pulling him after only 1 ⅓ innings. The right-hander gave up five earned runs on six hits.

 195.
Nate Haberthier came in relief of Van Buren, but Towson continued its big inning. Wagner scored on a wild pitch, Peyton hit his second solo home run of the day and Bryce Frederick scored on an Orr error to give Towson a 7-2 lead.

 196.
Maryland quickly regained the game’s momentum in the top of the third, though. Hacopian and Hojnar started the inning with back-to-back jacks. Then, a sacrifice fly by Iannazzo brought in Maryland’s fifth run, and Devin Russell tied the game with a two-run home run to left field, putting a ribbon on Maryland’s third inning.

 197.
“I thought that pretty much was the game right there in the third, being able to kind of come all the way back in one inning,” Swope said. “Normally, you’re just trying to claw back a little bit in it, but we were able to score five there in the third. I thought that was a huge momentum shift.”

 198.
The scoring outburst took a halt through the next three innings. After the second, Haberthier pitched three scoreless frames. He pitched 3 ⅔ innings and gave up six hits and two runs, but did not record a strikeout.

 199.
Maryland seized the lead in the top of the fifth inning, as Iannazzo tripled and Russell brought him in with an RBI groundout.

 200.
Andrew Johnson took the ball in the sixth inning and worked a scoreless frame, but Towson tied the game in the seventh inning when the left-hander gave up a solo home run to Chris Akers.

 201.
Johnson finished the seventh, worked a scoreless eighth and closed the contest with a scoreless ninth inning, earning the win in four innings of work. He gave up two hits, one earned run and three walks, while striking out two.

 202.
“Being able to kind of get some more out of some more guys in the pen has been great,” Hojnar said. “Nate [Haberthier] and [Andrew Johnson] had been battling all year long…it was nice to see them kind of both get to put it together at the same time and help us win the ballgame today.”

 203.
Three things to know

 204.
1. Hojnar stays red hot. For the second straight game, Hojnar had a multiple home runs. He has racked up five home runs in the past four games. The infielder also drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth that sparked a five-run inning for Maryland’s offense.

 205.
“I’m just trying to find something elevated first at bat, got a slider up, a little higher in the zone,” Hojnar said. “I was a little out in front, but got enough on it to hook it around the foul line.”

 206.
2. Have a day, Michael Iannazzo. The freshman had a very impressive Tuesday at Towson, finishing with three hits, three RBIs and was just a home run shy of the cycle.

 207.
3. Big innings lead the way. Maryland’s offense put up five runs in both the third and eighth innings. The former brought Maryland back from a five-run deficit. The latter broke an 8-8 tie in the eighth and added four runs of insurance.

 277.
The Terps look to capture their third straight victory.

After winning a crucial weekend series at home, Maryland baseball takes a 46-mile road trip to Towson.

 278.
The Terps head into the midweek contest with the 39th best rating percentage index — which measures a team’s wins, loses and strength of schedule — in the country, significantly higher than Towson’s 260.

 279.
Tuesday’s game will begin at 3 p.m. and air on FloBaseball. Maryland Baseball Network will have the radio feed.

 280.

 281. Towson Tigers (10-33, 3-15 CAA)
 282.

 283.
Towson faces Maryland for the first time since the 2022 season, when it lost 26-8 and 4-3. The Tigers have not had a great 2024 season, sitting in last place in the Coastal Athletic Association.

 284.
Towson’s performance at John B. Schuerholz Park has been significantly stronger compared to its away games, though, boasting an 8-12 record at home and a 1-20 record on the road.

 285.
Hitters to watch

 286.
Elijah Dickerson, redshirt senior outfielder/first baseman, No. 12 — Dickerson leads the Tigers with a .335 batting average and a .870 OPS in 2024. He has two home runs and 25 RBIs in 43 games this season.

 287.
Bryce Frederick, redshirt senior utility player, No. 26 — Frederick leads Towson with eight home runs and 31 RBIs in 2024. He has a .261 batting average and a .782 OPS in 43 games this season.

 288.
Taye Robinson, redshirt freshman infielder, No. 7 — Robinson has worked a team-high 23 walks this season, and his .282 batting average is second-best. He has a .724 OPS and 19 RBIs this season.

 289.
Pitchers to watch

 290.
Matt Lynch, sophomore left-hander, No. 18 — Lynch pitches in most midweeks for Towson and started last week against UMBC. This season, he has a 4.02 ERA in 31 ⅓ innings through 15 mound appearances and three starts.

 291.
Nick Karls, redshirt freshman right-hander, No. 37 — Karls has made a number of appearances, usually throwing roughly one inning. He has a 0-1 record with a 10.20 ERA in 15 innings this season through 12 appearances.

 292.
Brandon Jung, sophomore right-hander, No. 16 — Jung is a midweek frequent for Towson. In 15 appearances and 16 ⅔ innings pitched, he has a 1-1 record with a 4.86 ERA.

 293.
Strength

 294.
Strikeouts. Towson pitching has punched out 298 opponents in 43 games this season, amounting to 6.93 strikeouts per game. In comparison, its opponents have only struck out 272 batters.

 295.
Weakness

 296.
Offense. The Tigers trail their opponents in every single offensive statistic. Opponents have boasted a better batting average than Towson (.297 to .252) and scored more runs (374 to 203). As well, its opponents have hit 42 home runs, while Towson has racked up just 19.

 297.
Three things to know

 298.
1. Who will start? For the second straight midweek, it is uncertain who will be on the mound for Maryland. Evan Smith took the mound last week and went 2 ⅓ innings, while Kenny Lippman and Logan Berrier finished the job. Each pitched significant innings on Saturday and Sunday, making it unlikely they will grace the field on Tuesday. Meade Johnson, who was the midweek starter two weeks ago at Delaware, remains a possibility for the Terps.

 299.
2. Will the offense stay hot? Maryland put up 20 runs over its last two games and revitalized itself offensively. The Terps will look to keep that narrative going on Tuesday.

 300.
3. Maryland’s regional status. Currently ranked No. 39 in RPI, the Terps face a crucial juncture, as the top 50 teams in RPI typically secure spots in the NCAA tournament regional. A defeat against a team as lowly ranked as Towson could severely dent Maryland’s prospects of advancing to a regional.

 319.
A message to our readers as Emmett Siegel and Andrew Chodes step down as editors.

You’re probably going to be tired of hearing “thank you” once you make it to the end of this piece. But as I sit down to write this, I can’t shake those two words from my mind.

 320.
Thank you.

 321.
I’ll spare everyone the time and cut right to the chase: I’m stepping down as managing editor of Testudo Times, and my fellow soon-to-be-graduate Andrew Chodes is stepping down as deputy editor. No COVID years for us, I guess.

 322.
Jokes aside, working for Testudo Times has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my time in College Park, which flew by way faster than I could’ve anticipated. It hasn’t always been easy, but few things worth doing are.

 323.
During my time here, I wrote hundreds of stories and helped publish what felt like a million more. I was lucky enough to travel to bucket-list events, including multiple bowl games, the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and a men’s lacrosse national championship game. I’ve stood on the fields and courts of venues I grew up watching on television, hoping one day to be a part of it all.

 324.
I without a doubt had the coolest job a student could ask for.

 325.
I don’t care what anyone says about the transfer portal, NIL or anything else — college sports are, and always will be, special. I will forever cherish the opportunity to have a front-row seat to everything that makes that true.

 326.
I’d be doing a disservice if I didn’t thank those that came before me. To Lauren Rosh and Dylan Spilko: thank you for giving me a chance and allowing me the opportunity to prove myself. To Sam Oshtry and Ben Dickson: you were fantastic partners to work with last year and I’m forever grateful for you entrusting me with this position. And lastly, thank you to everyone who’s worked with or for Testudo Times. It truly takes a village to make this thing go.

 327.
Andrew — you’ve been a joy to work with and I’m proud to have done this job alongside you. It was a grind, but I think we can say with pride that we managed to hold it all together and not screw up an already good thing. Maybe we even did a halfway decent job at times. Whatever’s next for you, you’re going to kill it.

 328.
This job would be impossible without the help of those within the athletic department, and I owe everyone there a sincere thank you for working with me every step along the way. Essentially the entire communications department deserves appreciation, but I have to give a special shoutout to those that served as sports information directors for teams I covered: Dustin Semonavick, Ben Kessler, John Sinnett, Josh Schmidt and Keith Sneddon.

 329.
To all the talented journalists — both students and professionals — I’ve had the opportunity to learn from along the way, thank you. Your guidance has taught me invaluable lessons and helped prepare me for whatever awaits me.

 330.
And most importantly, to the readers: thank you. Each and every one of you plays a role in making this place special, and nothing happens here without your support. I can’t express how appreciative I am of everyone who read our work or interacted with us in any capacity. I hope everyone recognizes the value of this community and never takes it for granted.

 331.
Now that all the reminiscing is out of the way, let’s talk about the future. I’m very excited to announce that Colin McNamara will be the next managing editor of Testudo Times. Colin is one of the most talented student journalists I’ve had the privilege of working with and I’m 100% confident that he’s the right person for the job. I’m fired up to watch him take Testudo Times to the next level.

 332.
It’s been a fun ride, y’all. Thank you for everything.

 333.
A message from top deputy editor Andrew Chodes

 334.
The past two years have truly changed my life.

 335.
From an unsure freshman looking to gain journalism experience in a still-COVID world, I sent Lauren Rosh a direct message on Twitter, a message that paid off in the greatest way.

 336.
From freelance work to covering women’s basketball, soccer, men’s basketball and football, I’ve grown and learned more than I ever imagined. Never did I think I would have a byline in over 320 stories and help publish hundreds more.

 337.
Traveling to Chicago, Minneapolis, Columbus, Philadelphia and Nashville, working as the top deputy editor over the past year at this unbelievable platform, which is run and driven by student journalists, is something I will forever remember and reflect on.

 338.
I would be remiss if I didn’t shout out Maryland Athletics’ incredible staff, so many of whom helped me in my reporting at every turn. A special mention goes to Rose DiPaula, Dustin Semonavick, Ben Kessler and John Sinnett, who worked as sports information directors on my beats.

 339.
To the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made since turning my childhood dream into an incredible reality — I thank you and I appreciate you.

 340.
To the incredible professors and mentors inside Knight Hall — I thank you and appreciate you. To Mark Hyman and countless others, your constant guidance has been invaluable.

 341.
To our dedicated readers at Testudo Times — I thank you. I appreciate you. And I hope my work did enough to make your days a little bit brighter.

 342.
To Sam Oshtry and Ben Dickson, where do I start? Both of you provided me with incredible guidance as editors and helped me become a well-rounded journalist, and frankly a better person. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the two of you, giving me the opportunity to live out a dream, but most importantly turning a difficult start to my college tenure into some of the best years of my life.

 343.
Last but not least, thank you to Emmett Siegel. While I think you’ll be happy that you no longer have to listen to my constant questioning, we can both admit these last nine months have been so special. From late nights to early mornings, I’m unbelievably proud of the work we’ve done together to make sure everything runs smoothly and Testudo Times continues to provide the best coverage out there.

 344.
Thank you for being a great co-worker and friend. I know success will follow you in the coming years and I’m so excited to follow it.

 345.
Finally, I’m so excited for the future of the site with Colin McNamara at the helm. Colin is one of the most hardworking and talented journalists I know, and I can assure our passionate readers that he will work tirelessly to continue to provide incredible coverage.

 346.
A message from new managing editor Colin McNamara

 347.
It is an honor and privilege to be taking over as managing editor of Testudo Times. I would not be in this position without those who came before me and helped me along the way, namely Lauren Rosh, Dylan Spilko, Sam Oshtry, Ben Dickson, Emmett Siegel and Andrew Chodes. I want to express my sincerest gratitude for the opportunities and aid they have provided me over the last three years.

 348.
Serving as Testudo Times’ deputy editor this past year has been the best experience of my journalism career. Working with Emmett and Andrew has been an absolute pleasure, and while I hate to see them go, I know what awaits these two extremely hardworking and talented people will be worth watching.

 349.
Now, as managing editor, I am excited to announce that Ryan Alonardo will be stepping into the role of lead deputy editor. Ryan has been with Testudo Times the past two years and has displayed time and time again why he deserves this opportunity. We are excited to continue what has made this site extraordinary and provide the best possible coverage of Maryland sports to our loyal and passionate readers. Couldn’t be more excited for this next chapter!
