20.
Multiple NFL executives tell Albert Breer that Odell Beckham Jr. isn’t the same player he used to be.

The Miami Dolphins signed former three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year contract last week, much to the delight of many fans of the South Florida NFL franchise. The proverbial cherry on top of the announcement came when it was announced that Beckham’s base pay for the season is just $3 million.

 21.

 22.
Writing in his MMQB column for Sports Illustrated on Monday morning (hence the name of the column), Albert Breer discussed with multiple NFL executives why Beckham’s low base pay is an indicator of where the 31-year-old receiver currently is in his career.

 23.

 24.
Last season, the Baltimore Ravens signed the man nicknamed OBJ to a deal that had a base-pay value of $15 million. The Dolphins inked Beckham for 20% of that number.

 25.

 26.
One anonymous executive told Breer that “it’s clear — at least to him — that the former All-Pro, after a decade in the league and with his 32nd birthday coming in November, has lost his burst.”

 27.

 28.
Another anonymous executive — this time of an AFC squad — said, “I don’t know if I agree that he’s lost it so much as that he’s just older, and that’s what the market says on older players. He’s not always healthy, which is part of that. By the end of last year, he looked good, his legs were back. Now, does he need to play himself back into shape?”

 29.

 30.
The executive would go on to say that when Beckham played himself into shape with the Ravens last year, “his burst came back, and he could still do a lot of the normal OBJ stuff.”

 31.

 32.
Breer would continue to dump cold water on the signing by pointing out that last season in Baltimore, OBJ mustered just 35 receptions for 565 yards and a mere three touchdowns before closing his thoughts on Beckham by saying, “Now that’s not to say that he can’t help Miami. He’s different than Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, and his ability to be a physical run-after-catch receiver is still there.”

 33.

 34.
Time will tell if the Dolphins did the right thing by bringing in Odell Beckham Jr. for the 2024 season. Can he be the perfect wide-receiver-three for Head Coach Mike McDaniel’s high-powered offense? The NFL’s regular season kicks off in just about four months, so we still have plenty of time to speculate on that.

 35.

 36.
To read Breer’s entire column, click here.

 57.
 58.
Is a Tua Tagovailoa contract extension imminent?

ESPN’s Jeremey Fowler stole headlines Sunday afternoon when he announced that the Miami Dolphins and star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa have officially started dialogue towards a long-term contract. This report comes days after Miami signed free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year deal worth up to $8.5 million.

 59.

 60.

 61.

 62.
“I’m told the negotiations have begun in earnest. The Dolphins have at least got the ball rolling. Typically, a team makes a contract offer the player counters, and they go from there and see if they can find a sweet spot. The next three months will be crucial.”

 63.
Fowler continued: “My sense is this has not graduated to something that is imminent, but the Dolphins are pretty committed to this. Their actions this offseason say they are going to pay him.”

 64.

 65.
Tagovailoa, 26, led the league in passing a season ago, throwing for 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He was the first Dolphins quarterback to lead the league in passing, since, you guessed it, Dan Marino. Now, Miami’s young quarterback looks to get paid like one of the league’s top quarterbacks. This, as you can expect, has caused a bit of an uproar on social media, with fans from all 32 teams giving their insight on Tua’s inevitable extension.

 66.

 67.
That said, a report earlier this offseason suggested Tua would not seek a contract that would reset the market or even top some of his peers. How much less has yet to be determined, but for a team with nearly two decades worth of pain and suffering at the most important position in the sport, locking up Tua long-term is a necessity.

 68.

 69.
Since being drafted in 2020, Tagovailoa has experienced a rollercoaster of events, from the dreadful Brian Flores era to the 2022 season plagued by injury to what we see today: one of the better quarterbacks in all of football. Unfortunately, to be the best, you have to be the best, and until Tua and the Dolphins win the AFC East and/or a playoff game, nothing will matter.

 70.

 71.
How do you feel about the Miami Dolphins and Tua Tagovailoa working on a long-term contract extension? Do the Dolphins have any choice but to pay a promising young quarterback like Tua? How do you think Tagovailoa’s deal will impact the team in the long term? Let us know in the comments section below!

 94.
Christian Wilkins is gone. Xavien Howard is gone. Jerome Baker is gone. These three were some of the post productive players on the Miami Dolphins for the past several seasons. It will be odd not seeing them out there on gameday this upcoming season, but that just means new names will have to step up to fill the voids left by these players. The Dolphins have signed and drafted several players to help fit the defense that Anthony Weaver wants to run in his first year as the Dolphins defensive coordinator.

 132.

 133.
 134.
During the draft, the NFL’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, gave an interview in which he indicated that the league (owners) would like to move towards an 18-game season soon. This was followed by the predictable backlash from NFL players, both past and present. Years ago, the league brought up the idea of an 18-game season, which many dismissed as something that would never happen. Since then, the league has added one of the two extra games to the regular season schedule, bringing us 17 games a season. This is all part of the league's (owners) desire to make the NFL as much of a year-round sport as possible. Even the draft has become a marathon three-day, over-the-top, fairly high-rated television event. I know that I have been sucked in and wind up watching large portions of the draft each year.

 135.
So tonight’s question is: As a fan, do you want to see the season expanded to 18 games, or do you think that there are already enough games or perhaps even too many? Assuming that you favor an additional game and the league pushes the players and their union for one more regular season game, what concessions should the league make to the players and the union? Lastly, do you think this will happen, or was Goodell just talking/throwing something against the wall to see how it came out and what the response would be?

 158.
Our SB Nation Reacts poll gave Miami Dolphins fans a chance to reflect on the team’s performance at the 2024 NFL Draft. Did they decide Miami was a winner or a loser?

The Miami Dolphins selected Penn State edge rusher Chop Robinson with the 21st overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. They then continued the three-day selection process with the additions of Houston tackle Patrick Paul, Tennessee running back Jaylen Wright, Colorado State edge rusher Mohamed Kamara, Virginia wide receiver Malik Washington, Cal safety Patrick McMorris, and USC wide receiver Tahj Washington. The team added top-rated talent while also filling roster needs. But, did they make the right selections?

 159.
Our SB Nation Reacts poll, in partnership with DraftKings Sportsbook, allowed fans to voice their opinion on the Dolphins’ performance in the NFL Draft. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with 82 percent of the fans rating Miami as winners.

 160.

 161.
 162.

 163.

 164.
While the Dolphins’ draft performance was well-received by their fans, it’s worth noting their position in the league’s fan ratings. Dolphins fans and the Carolina Panthers ranked 21st in terms of positive fan base. The Chicago Bears led the league with a 99 percent “winners” rating, followed by the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Arizona Cardinals.

 165.
The only team to receive a “loser” rating was the Atlanta Falcons, for whom 51 percent of the respondents voted negatively while 49 percent voted them a winner.

 166.
In the AFC, the New England Patriots were tied for 15th in the league, with 90 percent of the fans rating them as winners. The New York Jets tied for 17th with an 89 percent positive rating, while the Buffalo Bills were 30th at 84 percent.

 167.
This week’s poll also asked for your thoughts on the team’s remaining needs following the draft. Overwhelmingly, the concern remains the interior offensive line, receiving 74 percent of the vote. Sticking along the line of scrimmage but switching to the other side of the ball, defensive tackle is the top concern for 15 percent of the fans.

 168.

 169.
 170.

 171.

 172.
The remaining options, linebacker and tight end, received six and five percent of the vote, respectively.

 173.
With a new round of free agency opening, will the Dolphins address any of those positions or do the coaches already believe they have the players in place for this season? Miami added wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr., this week, signaling the front office may not be done with adding pieces to the roster.

 174.
Do you agree with the results from this week’s poll? Let us know in the comments and watch for our next poll in the near future.

 194.
With the 120th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select...

Last week, I reviewed the tape on some of the Miami Dolphins' newest draft prospects, and to say that I’m excited to watch these young players compete and develop would be an understatement.

 195.
On Tuesday, I did a deep dive on Miami’s newest pass-rusher, Chop Robinson, and what he brings to Anthony Weaver’s defense. (Spoiler Alert: Quarterbacks are in trouble!) And then, on Thursday, I broke down one of the Dolphin's more polarizing draft picks (IMO). Of course, I’m talking about Miami’s newest offensive tackle, Patrick Paul, a titanic-sized player with plenty to work on if he hopes to take over for Terron Armstead soon.

 196.
That brings us to the third player the Dolphins selected and one the team felt they needed to trade up to get in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

 197.
Here’s my film breakdown on Tennessee running back Jaylen Wright.

 215.
What the Scouts are Saying...

 216.
// “What makes Wright a higher-level prospect, with starter potential as a primary back (different from a foundation back who is the offense’s starting point), is his short-area burst through small creases at the POA.

 217.
When you combine that with his patience, tempo, vision and velocity, you have an explosive runner who can not only sustain offense but produce big plays. Wright also brings added value as a receiver. He can line up in the backfield and detached from the formation. Plus, he showed he could pass protect.

 218.
Overall, Wright is a higher-level running back prospect with game-changing impact traits. That kind of back will be in demand because he is a weapon in an offense from multiple locations in the formation.” - Greg Cosell, 33rd team.” //

 219.

 220.
// “Wright grades out as a top-100 prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft on my board. He’s one of the top RB prospects in the class and could be an immediate spark plug for an offense in need of a change-of-pace back with deadly speed and three-down utility.

 221.
Being a younger player, there are still areas of his game where Wright can attain greater consistency. Most notably, his exchange footwork and processing behind the line of scrimmage could use some work.” - Ian Cummings, Pro Football Network” //

 222.

 223.
// “Explosive back with good size and breakaway speed. Wright’s running style is more linear than free-flowing, which limits his cut smoothness and elusiveness on the second level. His vision and aggression as an interior runner are just average, but that won’t stop him from putting yards on the stat sheet. He regularly bounced runs wide and beat the pursuit around the corner, so a move to a stretch-based running attack would be a natural fit, allowing his speed to shine. He’s capable of running with power, but he will default into finesse at times. Wright’s big-play potential and talent as a pass catcher should make him a Day 2 target as a future starter.” - Lance Zierlein, NFL.com” //

 224.

 225.

 226.

 227.
What the Houtz is Saying...

 228.
First, let me say that I’m proud of Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier for evaluating a player with Wright’s skill set and then having the testicular fortitude to go up and get him. Even more impressive was that it came right before a run on the position. So, kudos to Miami’s decision-makers for making it happen.

 229.
Now, with that said, I’m not entirely sure many of us went into this draft expecting the Dolphins to trade up for a running back. But it makes a lot more sense when you evaluate the roster and remember that Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. are not getting any younger.

 230.
He also adds a different dynamic to Miami’s offense than other backs on the roster. Yes, he has the 4.38 game-breaking speed that McDaniel covets. And sure, he can make defenders miss in a phone booth and be an asset as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. However, Wright's most valuable asset to Miami’s backfield (at least early on) is his ability to alter the game as a pass-protector.

 231.
There were times throughout my study when I saw Wright — at 5’10 — absolutely stone a linebacker shooting through the A-gap or a blitzing defensive back off the edge. It was impressive to watch. A lost art in a way. This is where I think he will be utilized most early on in Miami.

 232.
That said, he can undoubtedly alter the game with one cut and blow the doors off a defense at any point. He will be a playmaker, and to think of Tua Tagovailoa tossing the rock around to Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Odell Beckham Jr., Jonnu Smith, and all of Miami’s other skill-players — IN ADDITION TO — a three-headed backfield consisting of Raheem Mostert, De’Von Achane, and Jaylen Wright and every defensive coordinator in the NFL should be lying awake at night.

 233.

 245.
Conclusion

 246.
The Dolphins may not have needed a running back, but with a player of Wright’s caliber on the board, you can see why Miami dipped into next year’s war chest of mid-round picks to land the 21-year-old back. As a rookie, Wright will likely be integrated slowly into McDaniel’s offense. But as we’ve seen year after year, players must always be ready to have their number called upon, and with Wright being a natural scheme fit, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him earlier than expected, especially in the passing game.

 247.
Mike McDaniel’s Dolphins are all-in this year, and if that means emptying the chamber and bringing in every last playmaker on offense and defense, then I’m here for it. Jaylen Wright is a stud, and I’m excited to see what he can do in this offense surrounded by the rest of Miami’s playmakers.

 248.

 249.
What are your thoughts on Miami Dolphins rookie running back Jaylen Wright? Do you think it was the right decision for the Dolphins to move up to land the 21-year-old back? What type of role do you think he will have in 2024 and beyond? 269.
I returned from a long trip to Texas and back last evening to find out that our Miami Dolphins had, in fact, finally signed Odell Beckham to the roster for the upcoming 2024 season. I am unsure how I feel about this signing, but it makes for a crowded wide receiver room. Beyond that, I am interested to see how he works into the mix once things go live and which other receivers on the roster will be the odd man/men out when training camp wraps up this coming summer.

 270.
So tonight’s question(s) of the day are: are you happy with this signing, or would you have been happier to see them roll with whatever they already had on the roster? What do you think he adds to the already talent-stacked offensive roster?

 271.
Please share your thoughts and answers on the subject in the comments section below-

 291.
What kind of value does OBJ bring to the Dolphins?

The Miami Dolphins have been busy this offseason. They went from “Capocalypse” to recovery and now deviated toward ”the rich get richer” part of the spectrum.

 292.
General manager Chris Grier held firm on his original offer and landed one of the best pickups of Miami’s offseason at a fraction of his market value. Odell Beckham Jr. signed a one-year, $3 million contract, with incentives reaching a total salary of $8.25 million. An absolute bargain compared to the one-year, $18 million contract he signed with the Baltimore Ravens last year. Designer store quality at a thrift shop price.

 293.
That now creates a receiving group realistically of Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Odell Beckham Jr, Malik Washington, Jonnu Smith, Raheem Mostert, DeVone Achane, and Braxton Berrios with around thirty-three targets a game. Reek and Waddle will take around half of those targets, and you can always chalk a few up to check-downs, but that still leaves a good portion for OBJ to feast on, and make an impact from week one.

 294.
The position is deep on the Dolphins, but OBJ is a different type of playmaker they haven’t had in the Mike McDaniel era, and that’s a true go-up-and-get-it receiver with some of the best hands at the highest point.

 295.
He opens up higher percentage goal line fade options and back shoulder sideline throws quarterback Tua Tagovailoa loved to throw to DeVante Parker.

 296.
The player in that role last year was Cedric Wilson, and he wasn’t bad, but OBJ is a proven WR1 and can be deadly in a limited, highly efficient role for the Dolphins. He can even be a difference-maker in games where the Dolphins could be down a Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle. The drop-off is a lot less steep to OBJ than the other guys. The defense has to respect him.

 297.
OBJ is only thirty-one years old. He’s the same age as DeAndre Hopkins, DeVante Adams, and Keenan Allen. The tires may be worn a bit with two ACL tears in his career, but he’s two years removed from his last surgery, and they say that second year playing is when you hit the ground running.

 298.
His zero-to-sixty hasn’t dropped much, and he’s still outrunning guys. The Ravens offense didn’t feature him as much as he should’ve been, being a run-heavy offense, but the Dolphins system could turn back the clock for OBJ.

 299.

 301.
*Whispers*

I thought Odell Beckham Jr. largely made the most out of his opportunities with the Ravens last year pic.twitter.com/uEZkrlHCqt
— Ian Hartitz (@Ihartitz) May 3, 2024

 304.
 305.

 306.
I watch that clip above and can’t help but imagine what he could do in Mike McDaniel’s offense, with Tua Tagovailoa’s precision, and has Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle taking most of the attention away from him. He’s going to EAT.

 307.
Health concerns will travel with him for the rest of his career, but if he can play 15+ games healthy, the Miami Dolphins offense could be one of the most prolific offenses ever.

 308.
It’s a fantastic signing by Chris Grier. Low risk, incentive-laced one-year contract to a player who has done it on the biggest stage, has arguably the most reliable hands on the roster, and is historically a great teammate who understands his role, and chose to be in Miami. The Dolphins offense will be a PROBLEM in 2024.

 309.
Let us know in the comments what kind of impact Odell Beckham Jr. could have on the Miami Dolphins offense.
