74.
Suvana Cohousing

 75.

 76.

Here’s a great conversation between Jnanavaca and Tejasvini about the creation of a visionary new project in Cambridge, UK. Part of Suvana Cohousing’s vision is to create a multi-generational community, and also to provide some housing for Triratna retirees. For example, people who have lived many years in Buddhist communities but may need to have their own living space in retirement. And also younger people who struggle to find secure housing.

For anyone interested in this brilliant initiative - perhaps replicable in your own local context - now is a very good time to join Suvana Cohousing as a co-creator (only £20 per household per year). As a co-creator you can have an influence on the project, and get to know the other co-creators. Who knows? You may be living with them in future!

Suvana Cohousing are looking especially for people interested in buying a house or apartment in the new community. Many of those involved would like to live independently but as part of a Buddhist community. This model may appeal to a lot of other sangha members too, wherever they are in the world.

The exciting latest news is that Suvana Cohousing may have a site they can proceed with (a new build, not far from Cambridge city), which has a building timescale currently estimated to be four years.

What is cohousing?
77. Cohousing communities are intentional communities, created and run by their residents. Each household has a self-contained, private home as well as shared community space. Residents come together to manage their community, share activities, and regularly eat together.

Suvana Cohousing vision
78. We would like to live together ethically in a sustainable community of independence, beauty and creativity, caring for each other and sharing our lives and resources. Our community will be guided by Buddhist values. We plan to be open to anyone who shares the principles laid out in this vision statement, whether labelling themselves Buddhist or not.

Value-based community

Wider neighbourhood

 90.
Legacies: A Call to Reflect and Act

 91.

 92.

Dear Friends,

We are delighted to be able to share with you some touching news.

Janaka, a beacon of compassion to so many of us, has left a lasting legacy by supporting his three cherished charities in his Will: the Abhayaratna Trust, Karuna and Vajraloka.

Janaka’s generosity has not only empowered our three charities to continue our vital work, but it has also inspired us to reflect on the profound impact each of us can make when we plan for the future. His legacy serves as a reminder that collectively, through our individual actions, we possess the ability to shape the world for generations to come.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Janaka for his kindness and vision. His gift will make a truly profound difference in the lives of those we serve in our charities.

A Call to Reflect and Act
93. Janaka’s inspiring example invites us to consider the lasting impact we can leave on the world. The actions and decisions we make in the present can benefit others far beyond our own lifetime – and including Triratna charities in your Will is a beautiful way to ensure just that.

Please consider the power you have to positively transform lives and leave a gift in your Will. 95. Janaka was ordained in 1993 by Suvajra. He was 81 years old when he died in July 2022. He first came along to the London Buddhist Centre at the end of the 1970s and was very active in the movement since that time. In his more than forty years with Triratna, he lived, mostly in communities, in London, Oxford, Glasgow, Dhanakosa, Cambridge and, for the last 15 years of his life, in Bristol where he became a much loved and appreciated Sangha member. He also had a close connection with India, working for many years for Karuna, and visiting India on a number of occasions.

Janaka’s sadhana was Avalokitesvara and he very much exemplified compassion in his life.

Tags:

legacies, Abhayaratna Trust, karuna trust, vajraloka, dana, generosity

 184.
Competition: Help Animate Mara's Army!

 185.

 186.

Dear Families,

I’m creating a video about the life of the Buddha.

Support Aryajit’s new animated work: ‘A Brief History of Buddhism in Six Minutes’

One of the most enjoyable parts of creating the video is drawing Mara (the “Lord of Death”) and his army, who try to stop the Buddha gaining Enlightenment by attacking him. I have been drawing beings from indian mythology, like Raksanas and Yaksas, but also skeleton armies, dinosaurs, dragons (as you can see from the attached sketches) but I need your help completing the army!

I’m holding a competition for children to design a being for Mara’s army. The being can be purely from the depths of your imagination or you can draw inspiration from mythology or books and so on.

There are two age categories: a 4-11 category and 12-17.

You can use whatever medium you wish to make the design: pencil, pen, paint, charcoal, sculpture… And I will draw your design into the animation.

I will choose my favourite design from each category, and put it in my ‘Legend of the Buddha’ animation, which will be released on Wesak Day, 23rd May. I will also post other designs on social media.

Aryajit [at] addmotion.uk (subject: Scary%20Monsters) (Please submit your designs by email)

The deadline for the competition is the 30th of April.

Have fun - and let me know if you have any questions!

Aryajit

***

You can see Aryajit’s work on our new ‘Discover Buddhism’ pages (requires login and activation of the new site)

Watch Aryajit’s ‘Guide to the Buddhist Path’ animations on YouTube

Tags:

Animation, competition, Mara, enlightenment, Buddha's life story, drawing, Art, Triratna Arts
