42.

Ange Postecoglou says he does not care about the questions being asked about Tottenham’s inability to defend securely from set pieces. The manager believes he will get it right. But he could not avoid another hail of them after his team slumped to a third defeat on the spin, their season in increasing danger of fizzling out. And it was some way from being Spurs’ only shortcoming.

It was Chelsea’s night, this a victory to fire their hopes of a Europa League finish. They were excellent in the first half, Spurs so poor that Postecoglou howled in frustration on a number of occasions. It was difficult to remember seeing him so unhappy.

 83.

Aston Villa’s first major European semi-final since 1982 fell flat and unless they can inspire a memorable turnaround in the port of Piraeus next Thursday, their adventure will end in disappointment.

A few minutes after the final whistle, Evangelos Marinakis, the Olympiakos and Nottingham Forest owner, was basking in victory, high-fiving supporters in an understandably boisterous away end. 181.

Marseille were held to a 1-1 home draw by Atalanta in a hard-fought Europa League semi-final, first-leg tie in France on Thursday.

Gianluca Scamacca put the visitors ahead after 11 minutes when Teun Koopmeiners found him unmarked in the box to fire low into the far post. It was the striker’s 16th goal in all competitions this season – double the total he managed in his solitary season at West Ham.

 201.

Dyche has secured Premier League survival amid turmoil

‘The highs and lows, the hero to zero, that’s part of the job’

Sean Dyche has said he is still earning the right to be Everton’s manager despite leading the club through a series of crises to achieve Premier League safety with three games to spare.

Everton visit Luton on Friday with the pressure off for the first time in Dyche’s reign having secured their top-flight status with last weekend’s win over Brentford, their fourth successive league victory and clean sheet at Goodison Park. The achievement is all the more impressive given the club suffered two separate points deductions totalling eight points, had to make a profit in the transfer market last summer and has called in a firm of restructuring and insolvency advisers amid a protracted takeover saga.

 239.

Although he was superb for Dortmund against PSG, this is not the time to start clamouring for a Euros place or United return for player who has had a tough two years

Perhaps the most telling Jadon Sancho clip to emerge from a wonderfully creative attacking performance during Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League semi-final first leg was the one that appeared after the match.

This was Sancho’s interview on CBS sports with a visibly buzzed-up Jamie Carragher, who had spent the evening pushing the broadcasting envelope by drinking eight pints of beer in the Yellow Wall end and was able afterwards to provide a real-time demonstration of just how hard it is to do the job of professional broadcaster while drunk. Belated respect for the scotch-sodden Ron Burgundy‑style anchor gods of yesteryear. With the football governance bill passing its way through parliament, Masters fleshed out the league’s longstanding criticism that the regulator would result in “unintended consequences”.

Rangnick confirmed last week that Bayern had been in touch in their search for a successor to Thomas Tuchel and German media had reported a deal was imminent.

“I am national team coach of Austria with all my heart,” Rangnick said. “This task brings me a lot of joy and I am determined to continue down the road we have started. I want to clearly stress that this is not a rejection of Bayern Munich but rather a decision for my team and our common goals. We are fully focused on the Euro. We will do everything we can to go far.”

 297.
‘Ryan Reynolds never had to deal with this’: the slow death and (possible) rebirth of Southend United

 298.

 299.

In 20 years, this Essex club has tumbled down the leagues and seen its ground fall apart. Is a revival finally coming – or will hopes be dashed again?

The Bentley was not on the driveway. By now, after nine months of protests, the Southend United fans knew that meant Ron Martin wasn’t home. Martin is the chairman of Southend United FC, and his almost 25 years in charge are widely seen – both by fans and more dispassionate observers – as one of the most disastrous chairmanships in modern football. Since 2007, Southend have sunk from the English game’s second tier, the Championship, down to the third and then the fourth. In 2021, the club fell out of the league entirely for the first time in its history. At this final indignity, a plaque at the Blue Boar pub, which marks the site where the club was founded in 1906, was painted over with the letters RIP.

On the late September day I attended, about 40 or 50 fans were amassed on the pavement outside Martin’s residence. A large coniferous tree dwarfed the two security guards who idled on the driveway. When fans had started protesting outside Martin’s house in early 2023, a few brought bags of beer as if it was an away day. The organisers, Southend Fan Protest Group, soon put a stop to this. If they were serious about their objectives – summarised by their banner, “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. PAY UP. PACK UP. SELL UP” – they needed to do it properly. They replaced the cans with flyers, and their cause picked up more supporters.

But Jones produced an even braver comeback against the 2015 champion, recovering after a nervy and error-strewn start to turn a 3-0 deficit into parity by the end of the evening.

I mean, that’s undeniable, but his point is that formations are more fluid in the modern game than perhaps they once were.

I’m looking forward to this one. Are you? 503.

British golfer who was No 1 in Europe in the 1970s and compiled one of the finest records in the Ryder Cup

In the gap during the 1970s between the pre-eminence of Tony Jacklin and the emergence of Nick Faldo, Peter Oosterhuis, who has died aged 75, was Britain’s best and most successful golfer. He was No 1 in Europe for four consecutive years and compiled one of the finest records in the Ryder Cup, winning an unusually high percentage of his matches during an era when the US exercised total dominance. He was also a trailblazer in the States, where he became one of the first Europeans to commit full-time to the tour there, joining in 1975 and staying until 1986. Later he carved out a successful second career as a golf analyst for the American broadcaster CBS.

In all, Oosterhuis won 20 tournaments across the world, including the Italian Open (1974) and two French Opens (1973 and 1974). He dominated the newly formed European tour from 1971 to 1974, ending up as leader of the Order of Merit in each of those years.

 525.

Up to 90,000 fans are expected for third visit to Florida and organisers believe the US fanbase is here to stay

As Formula One prepares for its first meeting of the year in the United States it is Miami, the party town, that will host the latest in what has been a series of season-opening celebrations by Max Verstappen. Yet the Dutchman’s dominance does not faze race organisers in Florida, who are convinced of the continued growth of the popularity of F1 in the United States.

F1 is here for the third time and it is one of the meetings F1’s owners, Liberty Media, wanted to promote when they took over the sport. An “event” race in a destination city; a racing Super Bowl, an extravaganza where the show, the spectacle and the experience was considered as vital as the cars on the track. Inevitably, the very idea put the hackles up of diehards in Europe but F1 has room for a spot of showbiz alongside the stately classics.

 545.

The semi-finals kicked off with standout performances from a trio of Premier League loanees and two old hands rolling back the clock

Goalkeeper: Gregor Kobel, Borussia Dortmund

From a small pool of goalkeepers, only Dortmund’s Kobel kept a clean sheet. And if he could thank the post and bar for that on a couple of occasions – a Kylian Mbappé special rattled the woodwork at one point – he gave a solid performance in the Westfalenstadion. PSG rained 14 shots on Kobel’s goal, but none squeezed past. Kobel is the first Swiss keeper to play at this stage of the competition, and also showed off his skills with the ball at his feet. His reputation as one of the continent’s best is growing.

 568.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has denied reports that Manchester United are set for a summer clearout of their players in the transfer window, calling them a 'joke' and 'totally crap'. 'It's a joke,' he said. 'As long as I've worked here, every summer, every window, I think 200 players are getting interest from Manchester United. I think be calm and also take some responsibility when you make such a headline. Think, find a good source if there is some truth in it and this is totally crap.' The Dutchman also commented on Jadon Sancho's impressive Champions League performance for Borussia Dortmund and underlined his 'high value'

 588.

Ryan Garcia has denied using performance-enhancing drugs in a video posted on social media after ESPN reported that he had tested positive for a banned substance. Garcia tested positive for the performance-enhancing anabolic agent ostarine on the day before and the day after his surprise win over Devin Haney last month in New York City, according to a Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada) letter sent to both parties. “Everybody knows that I don’t cheat,” Garcia said. “I’ve never taken a steroid in my life. I don’t even know where to get steroids, at the end of the day. I barely take supplements ... Big lies, I beat his ass.”

Ryan Garcia tested positive for ostarine before and after Devin Haney fight

 606.

Carlos Alcaraz’s hopes of becoming the first player to win three straight Madrid Open titles came undone as the second seed was beaten in front of his home crowd 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 by the Russian seventh seed, Andrey Rublev, in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. It will be Rublev’s first semi-final in Madrid. The 26-year-old had entered the tournament on a four-match losing streak, including defeats in Miami, Monte Carlo and Barcelona. “Maybe this week is a relief but then next week we go back to the same … so better not to think this way because when you start to think: ‘Oh, how good everything is’. That’s what happened at the beginning of the season,” he said.

Carlos Alcaraz’s hold on Madrid Open ends with loss to Andrey Rublev

 641.

Rafael Nadal's spirited run at his final Madrid Masters came to an end when Jiri Lehecka defeated the 37-year-old 7-5, 6-4. Following the match, a ceremony took place celebrating the Spaniard's previous successes at the tournament, as five banners – one for each year he has won the title – were unfurled and a trophy presented. Nadal spoke after the match saying he hopes he has 'generated emotion and illusion' in those watching throughout his career. He is likely to retire later this year but the 'King of Clay' hasn't finished yet. It remains to be seen if the 14-time Roland Garros champion will be fit to compete in Paris, but he has given himself a solid foundation to build on as the tour heads to the Italian Open in Rome next week.

Rafael Nadal bids emotional farewell to Madrid Open after loss to Jiri Lehecka

 694.

 695.

Arne Slot caught the eye of Liverpool’s recruitment team with his track record of improving young talent, success on a relatively modest budget, European experience and a style of play that is not a dramatic departure from Jürgen Klopp’s. The Feyenoord coach has earned a reputation for high intensity on the pitch and has led his team to success multiple times.

Since joining the Rotterdam club from AZ Alkmaar in 2021, Slot has won the Eredivisie in 2022-23 and the KNVB Cup this season. He also led Feyenoord to the Europa Conference League final in 2022, where they lost to José Mourinho's Roma.

Arne Slot: the overachiever and ‘good guy’ who can spark a revolution

The 39-year-old Brazilian, a mainstay of the Blues team that lifted the Champions League in 2021, revealed the news on social media.
