20.
LA filled several needs in the 2024 NFL Draft and had a first-rounder for the first time since 2016

The Los Angeles Rams put together a second consecutive stellar effort in the 2024 NFL Draft. LA took FSU defender Jared Verse with the 19th overall pick and general manager Les Snead continued going to work from there. Blake Corum, Braden Fiske and Kamren Kinchens among others appear to be solid depth pieces for Sean McVay and company to work with.

 21.
Fans overwhelmingly approved of the prospects Snead was able to land and 98% of them believe the Rams were a winner in last month’s draft.

 22.

 23.
 24.

 25.
The fanbase has every reason to believe in the work Snead put in this draft. LA figures to be a massive player in the NFC playoff picture next season and needs all the reinforcements necessary to make a deep postseason run. Verse and Fiske in particular will be essential pieces as the Rams defense attempts to fill the massive hole left by future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald.

 26.
Corum should be a crucial backup alongside All-Pro Kyren Williams. The Michigan product and reigning national champion adds more punch to an already dangerous running game. Anything the Rams can do to take the pressure off Matthew Stafford is always an added bonus.

 27.
Kamren Kinchens, the former Miami standout, is a promising addition to a secondary that already boosts incoming free agents Kamren Curl and Tre’Davious White. Secondary help was also welcome. While the Kinchens selection doesn’t solve every issue, it’s a great start.

 28.
Rams fans have every reason to feel excitement over the 2024 NFL Draft results. If Snead hit another home run with this draft class, the fanbase might be celebrating even more this February. Fingers crossed everyone!

 48.
 49.
The NFL will release the 2024 schedule sometime in May. Will LA play on Thanksgiving for the first time in 48 years?

Fans of the L.A. Rams will soon know the opponent order with the 2024 NFL schedule release anticipated to happen sometime this month. The spectacle that follows the schedule release is the league’s way of helping ease the long slog that is the offseason.

 50.
Last year, the 2023 schedule was released on May 11 and the holiday games on Black Friday and Christmas were dropped well ahead of the release date. It’s reasonable to expect the schedule will be released late this upcoming week or early the following week.

 51.
Excitement is evident in Hollywood as the Rams seek to build upon their surprise success last season. Here are three predictions I have for LA’s upcoming slate:

 52.
LA will kick off the 2024 season against the Bears

 53.
Matthew Stafford began his Rams career with a bang in a 34-14 win over the Bears on Sunday Night Football. Why not throw it back to kick off the 2024 season?

 54.
This matchup might be a tad unlikely to start the year and too bad Aaron Donald isn’t around to welcome Caleb Williams to the NFL. Either way, Williams has a solid trio to throw too and Chicago shouldn’t be a pushover as they were three seasons ago.

 55.
Da Bears would be a fun test for the Rams to start with. Perhaps LA could give Chicago an early rude awakening with the Bears being projected as a dark horse postseason contender.

 56.
Rams will play at least five primetime games in 2024

 57.
Very few people were high on the Rams entering last season while the team was coming off a 5-12 campaign. That would explain why LA played only two primetime games in 2023 against the Bengals (Week 3) and Saints (Week 16).

 58.
I expect that to change significantly considering Los Angeles has the potential of being one of the top teams in the NFC. With games against divisional opponents and teams like the Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Packers and Bears on the docket, any of those squads would be worthy primetime matchups for LA.

 59.
If you noticed I omitted one of the best teams the Rams will face in ‘24, there’s a reason for that...

 60.
LA will head to Detroit on Thanksgiving

 61.
The Rams have not played a Thanksgiving day game since 1975 against Detroit. LA’s drought ends this season with another thriller expected between these NFC contenders.

 62.
I listed this game as one of the Rams’ best revenge games on the 2024 schedule as there are countless storylines in play here. Most importantly, LA will be looking for revenge after being on the losing end of the Lions’ first playoff win since 1991.

 63.
Related: What are the best revenge games on the Rams’ 2024 schedule?

 64.
Ford Field will be a rocking place on Thanksgiving that’s for sure. Matthew Stafford vs Jared Goff: Part III should be a treat for football fans everyone.

 85.
The Athletic’s Mike Sando shared what NFL executives had to say about the Rams trade for Braden Fiske

One of the more controversial moves of the NFL Draft last week seems to be what the Los Angeles Rams traded away to move up and get Florida State defensive tackle Braden Fiske. In the trade, the Rams gave up a 2025 2nd round pick to move up 13 spots with the Carolina Panthers to acquire Fiske.

 86.

 87.

 88.
The Rams spent more on Braden Fiske than they did on Jared Verse, according to the ESPN, OTC, PFF, Stuart and Baldwin charts*.

*including a 10% discount on the future second, assumed to be pick 48
— Seth Walder (@SethWalder) May 3, 2024

Executives specifically brought up the move that the Rams made to go up and get Fiske. Said one executive,

 94.

“We liked Fiske, but what they gave up, I mean, can you find another trade in the second round that gave up as much as they gave up, over the last 10 years? I don’t even know if they are weighing the trade calculations.”

 95.
According to Sando, “Execs saw that as behavior consistent with having a strong head coach. They also cited reports suggesting the Rams explored trading into the top 10 for tight end Brock Bowers (or possibly Byron Murphy II).”

 96.
The move to go up and get Fiske was a bold one. It was the most expensive Day 2 overpay of the last six drafts. With that said, he was very clearly a player that the Rams liked and felt would be a good addition to their defensive rotation. Until Fiske gets the field, there will be questions on whether or not the move up was worth it.

 97.
As Bill Barnwell noted this week,

 98.

“Trading up still pays off less often than the teams that move up would hope. When a team traded up for a player, his performance over the first five years matched or surpassed the cost his team paid in draft capital just 42% of the time...Nearly 23% of the picks were total busts who produced zero value for their new teams, including 16% of the players who were acquired via trade-ups on Day 1 or Day 2 of the draft.”

 99.

 100.

 101.
In which @billbarnwell comprehensively addresses a bunch of (unfounded) arguments in favor of trading up, including "What if this player is really high on our board?" and "Our team can identify trade-up targets!"

The underlined part here is remarkable!https://t.co/bJsnKaWIzQ pic.twitter.com/P28gPra5NV
— Computer Cowboy (@benbbaldwin) May 1, 2024
 102.

 103.
 104.
 105.

 106.
Whether or not the trade up was worth it will only be determined by how Fiske performs on the field. The Detroit Lions traded away a 2025 third round for a project offensive tackle from British Columbia with a rugby background. Meanwhile, the Rams invested in a second-team All-ACC defensive tackle which is overshadowing a potential poor investment or trade up move from Brad Holmes and the Lions.

 107.
The Rams obviously liked Fiske enough to move up for him and trade away future assets. However, NFL executives and analysts around the league continue to question whether or not it was the right move.

LA traded up, and some may say LA gave up too much, but regardless they made a move for Braden Fiske. 141.
“I did mention to Aaron that going back to our Super Bowl run, that there was a player by the name of Eric Weddle, who kind of jumped into the playoffs, and we signed him to the practice squad,” Snead said. “And we standard elevated him for four straight games to a Super Bowl championship. So, I did mention if we happen to get to the playoffs again, maybe we’ll circle back and see if the cup’s not quite filled. But that’s just a rumor. I doubt Aaron’s going to do that.”

If you view his video press conferences, and pay attention to what Snead says and doesn’t say, you can get a lot of information from him by reading between the lines.

 155.
Les Snead is one of the savviest and shrewdest NFL strategists in the industry today. But while some NFL GMs have been known to sprinkle misinformation to mislead analysts and other teams, Snead does not sully himself with that nonsense. He simply knows where to draw the line of what can and cannot be shared safely. Still, he does have a way of confirming what the team may do by what he is and is not willing to discuss directly.”

 168.
“Blacklock disappointed in the pros and is currently a street FA. He had a 30.2 PFF grade as a rookie and the Texans dumped him in a trade after 2 seasons. He played 710 defensive snaps for them and has 40 tackles and 3 career sacks. Jonah Williams started 22 games for the Rams, had 1,035 defensive snaps and has 77 tackles and 2.5 sacks in his career. He’s currently with the Vikings. In 2023, Williams had a mediocre 55.6 PFF grade, better than any season Blacklock had as a pro. Who wins this head-to-head matchup, the early 2nd rd pick or the small school UDFA who was just a placeholder rotational backup for the Rams and a PS player who didn’t appear in a single regular season game his entire rookie season? Williams the UDFA wins. He turned out to be the more valuable player.

 169.
The Rams reportedly gave Goodlow a $20,000 signing bonus, more than twice as much as Omar Speights got. The Dallas Cowboys prioritized a TE named Brevyn Spann-Ford and lured him with a $20k signing bonus. The Bengals made LB a priority and paid their top 2 choices $15k each. The Eagles gave Andre Sam, a safety, a $20k bonus. The Jets gave Braiden McGregor a $20k bonus. The largest reported UDFA bonus I was able to find was Jalen Coker getting a $25k bonus from the Carolina Panthers. So, Goodlow’s bonus was likely one of the largest amounts paid out this year, a sign that the Rams really wanted him and believe that he has a strong chance at making the final roster. Right off the bat, it is clear that Goodlow wasn’t just an average UDFA, he was a “priority” UDFA. He’s like an “8th round” draft pick.”

Even if OBJ’s time with the Rams was brief, it impacted a lot of fans and left an impression that will always be there for many. Now OBJ and Ramsey are back together again, as the Miami Dolphins are expected to sign him as a trio complement to Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill.

 199.
Will Miami’s addition of OBJ be the move that puts Mike McDaniel’s offense over the top or is this just another in the latest string of moves that confirm his best days are in the past?

 207.
OBJ missed the entire 2022 season after tearing his ACL with the Rams. He returned in 2023 with the Baltimore Ravens on a one-year deal and had 565 yards with three touchdowns. The 31-year-old will look to rebound in an offense that ranked first in passing yards in 2023 but lacked a third weapon. The third-most yards on the team was Durham Smythe with 366 and zero touchdowns, followed by Cedrick Wilson with 296 yards. If Beckham can cross the 700-yard mark in Miami, it’ll be a win for him and the Dolphins.

McCollough’s grade was nearly 20 points higher than the grades for Kam Kinchens and Cole Bishop. One of the primary negatives with McCollough is that he ran a very slow 40-time, but the Rams drafted Kinchens in the 3rd round and he only had a 4.65 second 40-time. Could McCollough not only surprisingly win a roster spot but someday even beat out Kinchens on the depth chart?

 287.
Background

 288.
Name: Jaylen McCollough. Nicknamed “Tank”. 5th year bonus senior. Turns 24 years old in October of 2024.

 289.
School: Tennessee. Degree in Communication, Master’s student in agricultural leadership, education and communication.

 290.
Size: 6 feet tall, 202 pounds, 31 1/2’’ arms, 8 3/8’’ hands, 74 3/8’’ wingspan, 4.74 second (40 time), 1.62 second (10-yard split), 32’’ vertical jump, 9’7’’ broad jump, 4.58 second (short shuttle), 7.52 second (3-cone), 17 bench reps. A different source had his PD 40-time as 4.69 seconds.

 291.
4-star recruit from Georgia. Played RB and S in HS. Had an injury in 2017 and missed games. Projected as future Day 3 draft pick with Gerod Holliman as his comp.

 292.
Enrolled early in 2019. Had nagging injuries to upper and lower body in 2020.

 293.
Tennessee had a 4-2-5 scheme with a LEO hybrid edge defender (Byron Young played that position in 2022) and a STAR defensive back. McCollough appeared to be playing the SS position but in their defense the roles of the 2 safety spots appeared to be pretty similar. Vols were 23rd in scoring defense in 2023, he was 3rd on the team in tackles, tied for 1st in INTs and tied for 2nd in PDs.”

 315.
Rams GM Les Snead commented on chances of Aaron Donald coming out of retirement

Recently, Rams general manager Les Snead appeared on the Rich Eisen show and the topic of a possible Aaron Donald return came up. Snead talked about Donald expressing that his “cup is full”. A line the future Hall of Famer expressed himself when he retired.

 321.
 322.

 323.
Eisen pressed the subject by asking if Snead or the Rams tried to convince Aaron that his cup could be “larger”, or maybe wasn’t as filled as AD would want? Snead says that Donald is most likely done with his time as a player, but adds fuel to the topic by mentioning that L.A. once brought a player out of retirement: Eric Weddle.

 324.
Per Snead:

 325.

“Lets call it going back to our Super Bowl run that there was a player by the name of Eric Weddle...I did mention (to AD) if we happen to get to the playoffs again maybe we’ll circle back and see...if the cup’s not quite filled.”

 326.
Eisen response was a simple “Really?!?” and Snead did reply, but his answer pretty much confirmed what everyone assumes, and that is that #99 has retired. Snead says that he doesn’t even know if Donald would want to suit up for only a few games having not been there for the rest of the season with the squad.

 327.

“I doubt Aaron’s gonna do that.”

 328.
All signs point to us not seeing Donald play another NFL snap, but anything is possible. As Snead points out there is “no breaking news here.” At this time this is just more of a fun interaction between Eisen and Snead.

 348.
 349.
A tale of 2 Jareds, as Rams go eight years between first round picks

The well-documented history and non-history of the L.A. Rams and first round picks got a new data point last week when the team finally picked a player on day one, selecting Jared Verse eight years after Jared Goff. Thursday is the deadline for teams to make decisions on fifth-year options for players drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, but of course the Rams won’t have any news on that front for obvious reasons.

 350.
In fact, the last time the Rams had to make a fifth-year option decision at all was also with Goff, when L.A. exercised his option in 2019 for obvious reasons: He had just been to the Super Bowl. That didn’t last long though, as the Rams signed Goff to a four-year, $134 million extension only a few months later.

 351.
Goff is the most recent player before Verse to get picked by the Rams in the first round, but the team narrowly dodged a decision on a fifth-year option in 2017 when Les Snead traded for receiver Sammy Watkins. The Bills picked Watkins fourth overall in the 2014 draft and then declined his fifth-year option in 2017, just a couple of months before trading him to L.A. for with a sixth round pick for E.J. Gaines and a second round pick.

 352.
Watkins was seemingly on track for a fifth-year option in his first two seasons, but injuries and inconsistency came to the surface in 2016 prior to Buffalo deciding to trade him for whatever they could get.

 353.
First round picks are the only players who come with fifth-year options, therefore the Rams don’t have to think about this decision very often. There was Goff in 2019, but despite adding some former first round picks since then none of them were in the first three years of their deals. Austin Corbett was the closest, but he was the first pick of the second round when the Browns drafted him a year before trading him to L.A..

 354.
Last season’s roster had only three former first round picks total: Aaron Donald, Matthew Stafford, and eventually Carson Wentz. That’s it. The team added a former first round pick in free agency this year when they signed cornerback Tre’Davious White, another player drafted by the Bills. He’s obviously well past his fifth-year option decision.

 355.
Despite L.A.’s lack of history with fifth-year options since Goff, the Rams made a lot of them in the first half of the 2010s and actually only declined one of eight options over the period of time per OvertheCap.com.

 356.

The Panthers and Chargers lead the league in most fifth year options picked up with 9. The Rams have been infamous for not having a 1st round pick from 2017 to the present, but before then they often had multiple first round picks, and did well in picking players they deemed worthy of the fifth year option.

 357.
The Rams declined the fifth-year option on Greg Robinson, then traded him to the Lions for a sixth round pick.

 358.
A decision on Verse, if there even is one because you never know if a player could be traded or extended before that decision date, won’t come until 2027. This is obviously early to talk about it at all, but you’ll have to take that up with the front office that hasn’t made any first round picks since Jared Goff. Maybe Verse will, maybe he won’t, but he’ll definitely be the most-watched Rams first round pick in eight years. Guaranteed.
