  46. <p>MARSHALL – When it comes to his violin, Marshall High School student Mark Rabaey means business.</p>
  47. <p>He started a business playing violin at events in the Marshall area.  He has played four times so far – two weddings, a funeral and a Christmas party at Marshall Golf Club.</p>
  48. <p>The business also earns him school loans.  He enrolled in the “Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities” course, which gives high school students experience in starting and running businesses.</p>
  49. <p>Because of the countless hours he spent practicing, Rabaey decided to use his violin as an individual business project.</p>
  50. <p><span class="quotations">“I invested a lot of time in my violin”</span> said Rabaey. <span class="quotations">“I thought it was a good foundation and a business concept could be a way to build on it.  We were told to choose a business idea that involved something we were interested in, something we already knew about.”</span></p>
  51. <p>He started playing the violin at the age of 8.  His first teacher was Marshall music teacher Diane Wright.  He started by practicing for 30 minutes every day and then increased it to about an hour a day.</p>
  52. <p>He now practices whenever he gets the chance.  On average it is about five hours per week, enough to keep his skills at the current level.  He plays with both the Marshall High School Orchestra and the Southwest Minnesota Orchestra.</p>
  53. <p>He said one of the reasons he likes the violin is because it is a difficult instrument to learn.  He finds that investing time leads to good rewards.</p>
  54. <p><span class="quotations">“There are so many aspects to the strings and the bow, so much that goes into producing a good sound.”</span> said Rabaey.  It&#39;s worth the time.  The violin has a sound that is most similar to a human voice.  I can really add emotion to my music.”</p>
  55. <p>For the CEO class, he and other class members started a clothing company last winter.  They secured an entry fee of $9,000.  In the last few months, they have paid back all of their entry fee and made a profit of $2,600.</p>
  56. <p>He created his own business plan for the spring violin project.  He has also started a social media page and is working on a website.</p>
  57. <p>He is completing his junior year at MHS.  He plans to apply to the United States Air Force Academy and is also considering small private colleges.  He wants to major in either engineering or biology.</p>
  58. <p>He hopes to build a strong customer base in the Marshall area.  He expects his violin will continue to serve as a business venture when he moves away to study.</p>
  59. <p><span class="quotations">“It’s probably a minor matter”</span> said Rabaey. <span class="quotations">“I hope to make money from this to cover my expenses.  It will depend on how much time I have.”</span></p>
  60. <p>Shanda Walker, a Marshall faculty member who serves as Rabaey&#39;s CEO advisor, said his violin project was successful because of a combination of talent and hard work.</p>
  61. <p><span class="quotations">“Mark is a dedicated student who is always thinking about how he could improve.”</span> Walker said. <span class="quotations">“He rolls up his sleeves and takes responsibility.  He works well with his classmates, which is very valuable in the business world.  He is an excellent student and a great boy.”</span></p>

  80. <p class="dcr-1myha1i">In one of the videos, Prof. Mark Maslin from University College London explains: “The climate crisis is progressing faster, much faster than expected.” Comedian Jo Brand translates it this way: “We&#39;re still going to hell, but we&#39;re getting there faster.”</p>
  81. <p class="dcr-1myha1i">Maslin says: “Solar and wind energy are now over ten times cheaper than oil and gas.  We can still prevent a lot of the damage and end up in a better place for everyone.&#8221; Brand replies: &#8220;With wind and solar energy, we save money and we don&#39;t die.&#8221; That&#39;s a pretty strong selling point.&#8221;</p>

  157. <p>“This is a small island with natural habitat for everything that lives here, especially bird watching,” said Katie LaBarbera, science director of the Land Bird Program at the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory.  “Climate change is affecting these ecosystems, and these species are often negatively impacted.”</p>
  158. <p>She manages the Coyote Creek Field Station in Milpitas.  For the past 40 years, volunteers from the nonprofit have been studying birds at this year-round birding station.  There are worrying declines in some species.</p>
  159. <p>To shed light on the issue, LaBarbera and her team are collecting data using a traditional research method known as “bird banding.”  The birds are gently caught using special soft nets, weighed and their feathers examined for diseases, opportunistic infections or pests.  Researchers examine them for fatty deposits and signs of molting.  A lightweight band engraved with a unique ID number is then placed around its leg like a loose bracelet before the bird is released.</p>
  160. <p>If the ringed bird is recaptured, the tag on the bracelet allows scientists to track its movement.  But there is one big downside: recovery rates are very, very low.</p>
  161. <p>“You recapture a very small percentage of all the birds you ring,” LaBarbera noted.  “So you have to ring a lot of birds for one of them to show up at another station.”</p>
  162. <p>Now a groundbreaking technology is surprising researchers.  It&#39;s called Motus Wildlife Tracking System.  The tracking system is an international collaborative research network.</p>
  163. <p>Motus uses radio transmitters to track wildlife over long distances in real time around the world, discovering incredible new details.  The system has been used on the East Coast for some time.  Stations are now being set up along the Pacific coast.</p>
  164. <p>  “We’ve never seen data like this on the West Coast,” LaBarbera explained.</p>

  170. <p>“It was very exciting,” Levi Souza announced.  Souza is a senior environmental scientist at the California Department of Fish &#038; Wildlife.  He directs the department&#39;s Motus program.  “We have large gaps in our knowledge of the basic life histories of many wild animals and it is very gratifying to be able to close these gaps.”</p>
  171. <p>To date, there are more than 50 Motus stations in California with strategically placed antennas from the Oregon border to the Salton Sea at the southern end of the state. </p>
  172. <p>Souza took CBS News Bay Area to Grizzly Island, where his group manages Motus Tower there.  The California Department of Fish and Wildlife set up its first station around early 2021.</p>
  173. <p>“Typically only one station per property is required to cover everything that moves past or uses that property,” Souza explained.</p>
  174. <p>Using Motus, researchers attach tiny tracking tags to small birds, bats – even butterflies and bees.</p>
  175. <p>When the wild animal flies past a tower, the tag sends out a unique, coded radio signal that is picked up by the antenna.  The range can be up to 12 miles.  The signal then goes to the cloud and ends up in a central database. </p>
  176. <p>“It will then be accessible to the public and also to researchers,” said the scientist.</p>
  177. <p>Some of the nanotags are solar powered, others have batteries.  They are much cheaper than GPS tags, which are more suitable for larger animals like whales and sharks.</p>
  178. <p>There are now 1,200 Motus stations in 31 countries, monitoring at least 250 species of birds, bats and insects.  Souza told CBS News Bay Area that some of the data he saw on the Motus website was breathtaking and eye-opening.</p>
  179. <p>“We discovered western meadowlarks in the Central Valley, in the northern part of the valley, that were tagged in Montana,” Souza explained.</p>
  180. <p>What is crucial and remarkable about Motus is that researchers around the world are pooling their resources and sharing the data.  The hope is that by working together, scientists can more quickly understand where the birds are and identify which areas are most important to protect as the planet continues to warm.  Climate change is a major concern for these scientists.</p>
  181. <p>  &#8220;Yes.  I’m very worried,” LaBarbera said.</p>
  182. <p>At Coyote Creek Field Station, researchers constructed a Motus tower and station.  So far they have attached nanotags to four birds: two hermit thrushes and two song sparrows.  The San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory hopes to tag 10 more wild birds in the next few weeks.</p>
  183. <p>LaBarbera hopes the warming planet, data — and people — will help give these birds a fighting chance.</p>
  184. <p>“The more we slow down climate change, the better,” said the scientist, hoping for more than just a wing and a prayer.</p>

  249. <p>But even though they&#39;ve spent 30 years creating flavors unique to the U.S. market, they have at least one thing in common with all breweries: the use of steam.</p>
  250. <p>Steam is used to disinfect brewing equipment and is an important part of the brewing process.</p>
  251. <p>Large cone-shaped kettles are used to boil the wort &#8211; a liquid obtained from mashing barley in the first stage of brewing &#8211; and produce steam.</p>
  252. <p>This boiling process helps remove flavors that the brewer does not want in the beer before transferring the wort to vessels to ferment with yeast, resulting in beer.</p>
  253. <p>Some of the steam generated by the boilers is captured by a heat exchanger so that the brewer can use this waste heat in the next brewing process.</p>

  256. <p>As the driving force behind the industrial revolution, steam remains crucial to production processes in numerous industries.</p>
  257. <p>In addition to its common use in the food and beverage industry, steam is also used by pharmaceutical companies for sterilization and to heat many buildings such as hospitals.</p>
  258. <p>However, steam is still primarily produced using boilers that run on fossil fuels, resulting in a large carbon footprint.</p>
  259. <p>Fossil fuels accounted for 73% of industrial energy consumption in the U.S. in 2018, with 40% of those fossil fuels used to heat steam boilers.</p>
  260. <p>One way to reduce this would be to switch to electric.  Assuming that the electricity is generated from sustainable sources, the carbon footprint is significantly reduced.</p>
  261. <p>But using electricity also has disadvantages.</p>
  262. <p>“The biggest challenge is cost, which is likely to limit the pace of customer adoption,” says Maurizio Preziosa from British engineering firm Spirax Group.</p>
  263. <p>Although cost might be an issue, switching is relatively easy.</p>
  264. <p>Mr Preziosa says his company&#39;s technology can usually be integrated into the existing system.</p>
  265. <p>“Customers can continue to use the rest of their existing steam infrastructure,” explains Mr. Preziosa.</p>
  266. <p>This has the added benefit of reducing downtime, a potential barrier to adoption for companies that rely on tightly calibrated production processes.</p>

  268. <p>AtmosZero is developing a heat pump system to generate steam [Atmos Zero]</p>
  269. <p>US-based company AtmosZero takes a different approach to steam generation.  Your boiler is a heat pump that extracts heat from the air and converts it into high-temperature steam.</p>
  270. <p>It works by circulating low-boiling point liquid refrigerants through a closed circuit, absorbing heat from the air.</p>
  271. <p>The slightly heated refrigerant is compressed, reaching a temperature high enough to boil water.</p>
  272. <p>A heat exchanger then transfers the heat from the refrigerant to water to produce steam.</p>
  273. <p>The big advantage of this approach is that it reduces operating costs.</p>
  274. <p>The company&#39;s CEO, Addison Stark, estimates that heat pump technology could save companies hundreds of thousands of dollars compared to currently available options.</p>
  275. <p>“As it is a heat pump-based system, we are significantly more efficient than current boilers – we produce around two units of heat output for one unit of energy input, drastically reducing operating costs,” explains Mr Stark.</p>
  276. <p>More business technology</p>
  277. <p>AtmosZero is still in its early stages and requires further development work.  The goal is to build a production facility in early 2026 and begin delivering boiler systems.</p>
  278. <p>Mr Stark is confident the system will work to the extent required by the industry.  “We are mass-produced and easy to implement.”</p>
  279. <p>Manufacturers of eco-friendly vaping devices expect demand to increase in the coming years.</p>
  280. <p>“The expectations of end consumers are changing,” explains Maurizio Preziosa from the Spirax Group.</p>
  281. <p>“They want to buy from companies that operate sustainably by reducing their impact on people and planet, and this, along with regulatory pressures, is driving demand from our customers who serve these consumers,” he says.</p>

  283. <p>New Belgium plans to test an AtmosZero steam system [New Belgium Brewing]</p>
  284. <p>Back in Colorado, preparations are underway for New Belgium Brewing, where AtmosZero will replace one of the brewery&#39;s combustion boilers with their heat pump system.</p>
  285. <p>This is the next step in the sustainability journey the company has been on since its early days when it sold its beer at local festivals.</p>
  286. <p>In addition to installing solar panels and generating electricity from wastewater, Fat Tire, one of their first beers, became the first certified carbon neutral beer in America in August 2020.</p>
  287. <p>This is part of a broader company goal to become completely carbon neutral by 2030.</p>
  288. <p>Changing the way they use steam could be the key step towards this goal.</p>

  308. <p>ST.  LOUIS – Dinosaur fans will be thrilled when the Saint Louis Science Center is called “SUE: The T. rex Experience” this summer. </p>
  309. <p>SUE is considered the most complete and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus Rex specimen ever discovered.  It will be part of a special exhibition at the Science Center from June to September. </p>
  310. <p>Visitors have the opportunity to see an exact replica of the original SUE skeleton up close.  He measures 40 feet from snout to tail and stands 13 feet tall at the hip. </p>
  311. <p> Is it legal for motorcyclists to lane split in Missouri and Illinois? </p>
  312. <p>“Because SUE was discovered in such excellent condition and as a near-complete specimen, scientists were able to learn so much about dinosaurs and the lives they lived from this fossil,” said Kaylia Eskew of the Science Center.  &#8220;SUE: The T. rex Experience presents the latest discoveries about what is known about Tyrannosaurus Rex &#8211; the composition of their bodies, the food they ate, the way they moved, the sounds they made, how they aged and more.  The Science Center is honored to host this special exhibition so our guests can immerse themselves in the wonder of SUE’s life.”</p>
  313. <p>Together with SUE there will be additional large-format displays, interactive stations, narrated videos and light shows. </p>
  314. <p>“In addition to viewing life-size specimens, interactive stations give guests the opportunity to smell prehistoric plants and the T. Rex’s rancid breath, hear the rumble of the T. Rex’s powerful roar, and feel the texture of SUE’s bones and dinosaur skin.” Eskew said.</p>
  315. <p>While admission to the Science Center is free, SUE: The T. rex Experience requires tickets.  Tickets go on sale May 8, 2024. They range from $6 to $12 depending on age. </p>

  334. <p>MGMA has sent a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services&#39; Office for Civil Rights requesting clarity on whether providers or Change Healthcare are responsible for informing affected patients that their personal health information may have been compromised. </p>
  335. <p>The burden of HIPAA-required breach notifications should fall on Change, MGMA said.</p>
  336. <p>“We are encouraged by UHG’s press release on Monday, which states that they will report violations and “comply with appropriate administrative requests on behalf of a provider or customer.”  But medical groups can&#39;t rely on vague promises in a press release that lacks details.  &#8221; said MGMA. &#8220;Our members are currently facing increasing concerns about their regulatory exposure should UHG fail to deliver on its promises to OCR&#39;s satisfaction.&#8221;</p>
  337. <p>MGMA is asking the OCR to clearly state that responsibility for violation notifications rests solely with Change and its parent company, UnitedHealth Group;  that providers who are completely innocent in this unique situation will be spared from any regulatory scrutiny;  and ensure that Change and United deliver on their promises in a timely and transparent manner.</p>
  338. <p><strong>WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT</strong></p>
  339. <p>On Monday, UnitedHealth made clear that it had paid a ransom to protect patient data.  Its status update page also confirmed that files containing personal health information and personally identifiable information had been posted on the dark web for about a week.</p>
  340. <p>The files “could cover a significant portion of the people of America,” the company said.</p>
  341. <p>“Given the ongoing nature and complexity of data review, it will likely take several months to obtain enough information to identify and notify affected customers and individuals,” UnitedHealth said.</p>
  342. <p><strong>THE BIGGER TREND</strong></p>
  343. <p>Change Healthcare discovered it was affected by the cyberattack on February 21st.  Change, owned by UnitedHealth subsidiary Optum, has shut down its claims processing services.</p>
  344. <p>The resulting disruption continues to impact claims processing and revenue for hospitals and medical practices.</p>
