42.
Your health can protect you from the over-commercialization of the holidays. More and more, we hear about how the holidays have turned into something different than what they used to be. Instead of the “true” meaning of Christmas and other holidays they have become about consumerization. Buying and selling and big online sales, they had taken over the season.

  43.
And the refrain changed from one of Christmas carols to one that says “what happened to the spirit of Christmas?” Wondered aloud while sitting in angry traffic snarls of people busy rushing to give gifts and create wonderful memories at family parties.

  44.
But just like the current situation comes from us, the solution is from inside of us as well. So the change has been on the backs of our own nature, that has been simply exposed in a way.

  45.
The story of commercialization however is one that comes from ourselves. “It’s advertising and big businesses!” They complain, citing commercial interests as the reason why Christmas has become about buying and selling instead of understanding and appreciating the gifts that we have been given. All of that advertising and those plastic widgets aren’t cheap of course, and wouldn’t persist without the hordes of consumers snapping them up. The hordes which are, of course, made up of us.

  46.
The part of our nature that likes things that are new and shiny and exciting, that likes quick fixes over hard earned results, and that wants something cool now as opposed to something truly beautiful and worthwhile later.

  47.
Which ironically is never more apparent with our health than with Christmas. The new “commercialized” version, so lamented, which says – buy now, give now, get now, be happy now – deal with the bills and the mess and the stuff and the overflowing closets later, is the idea of instant gratification. And in just the same way, the January gym craze silently acknowledges how we deal with ourselves – and our health. We can simply deal with it later.

  48.
And our health, just like an overdone last minute sale on Christmas Eve, gets “commercialized.”

  49.
That feeling when we know that we are focusing on our simplistic nature, of what we can get, and get now, as opposed to what we can truly create and enjoy.

  50.
I.e., what we can be proud of, like the true charitable giving to those in need?

  51.
This year allow your focus to sway towards real giving. Give yourself something that you don’t just enjoy now but is fulfilling in the long term. Align yourself with people and ideas that support you not just in a momentary indulgence now, but in giving yourself a true gift. The most valuable one you can give yourself, a body that you actually want to ‘live’ in. A gift to yourself in the future. And let that be one of the gifts you give to others, share those choices – and this idea with them, it could be the very best gift they get all year.

  92.
Has anyone told you you don’t need permission to be a superhero? Or that you don’t need someone to tell you it’s okay to help other people? There are some amazing stories of people that decided they didn’t want to wait to help the people around them that needed help. These were people that didn’t have advanced degrees or complicated certifications. What they did have was the sense of action and an overwhelming urgency to start making changes in the world around them.

  93.
Consider the story of Charles DeForest. Long before people had the ability to make ideas go ‘viral,’ and before we had the internet to rapidly spread a message, he still made these things happen. Charles worked for the National Tuberculosis Association, and was charged with helping curb the spread of this dangerous disease. What did he do in his post?

  94.
He made a nationwide program and contest for kids that taught them basic health habits that helped them improve their own health, their hygiene, and the likelihood of staying healthy. He created something that he called the “Modern Health Crusader Leagues,” forming them in major cities beginning in 1916, lasting for over 15 years. The Leagues had a scoring system for daily and weekly activities, ranks, and awards for completion of various levels of the program.

  95.
Rather than just simply sit at his desk, publish info, or talk about other people making change, he created a system, and then implemented the system that would help kids across the country learn basic health principles to help keep them safe. What were some examples of the basic activities involved the kids were tasked with tracking in the Leagues?

  96.
“I tried hard to sit and stand up straight.”

  97.
“I took ten or more slow, deep breaths of fresh air.”

  98.
“I drank four glasses of water, some before each meal, and drank no tea, coffee or injurious drink.”

  99.
Today, technology allows a program like this to be vastly more easily implemented, compared to the technology of the early 1900’s. What they did have then was the motivation to help people take the actions they needed to in order to improve their health. And that is no different than today. In fact, most people who have had tremendous results in chiropractic were sent there by someone they knew. Someone that saw that they needed help, and that they needed to make a change to get better, and healthier. And one by one, all of those people that made chiropractic the second largest health profession in the world, were sent there by someone who wanted to make a difference for another. Could you do the same, and be the next health hero?

  118.
It’s a classic phrase by Rene Descartes – one that is instantly recognizable. And it comes from a totally unrecognizable world – 1637.

  119.
Yet it is still true today. Descartes’ attempt to get to the very bedrock of what he was as a human being is worth looking at as we turn over into the new year. Especially as we examine the beginning of something new – a time when discussions turn to the entire idea of new, and what the idea of new creates – the vision of new possibilities.

  120.
While many will take this sense of newness and embrace the potential possibilities, and make New Year’s Resolutions and the like – most of these will fail.

  121.
Most common resolutions are things like losing weight or getting in shape, getting out of debt, making more money, or being better to the people around you – or maybe even being better to yourself.

  122.
Oddly enough, when it gets right down to it, they are wishes that we would take better care of ourselves. That we would be better versions of ourselves in the future than what we are now.

  123.
Why is it that the journey from possibility to reality tends to fail so often? Reports say that the failure rate of people seeking a new possibility at the New Year fail at an 80% rate – within 6 weeks!

  124.
Perhaps they are made by people doing them the same way. And instead of following the example of one of the world’s most notable philosophers- that is, to start from the most simple beginnings of what is true and important.

  125.
And making that transformation starts with one place – taking better care of yourself.

  126.
Admitting that that is a basic fundamental of being a human being. That mentally we are aware and conscious, but physically we are living beings that need constant and consistent support of all sorts.

  127.
Odd but true, that the road to total transformation is such a simple phrase from so long ago.

  128.
That the phrase is so recognizable nearly 400 years later is because it is so basic. In fact, its very aim is to recognize and speak a most basic truth. And when it comes to you this year, that truth is that if you want to have a great year, one that you are happy about and proud of, and enjoy looking back on – it starts with a basic step of taking care of your most basic possession – yourself.

  141.
Take the aging progression above and expand it all the way. From the time we are very young, we grow, get bigger, stronger, smarter and generally better at everything as we go.

  145.
Anti-aging is a trick. And like all tricks, it’s not real. We all slow down, grow old, and die. But like all tricks, when done well, they are amazing and fun. Here is how the trick of anti-aging can work for you.

  146.
Take the aging progression above and expand it all the way. From the time we are very young, we grow, get bigger, stronger, smarter and generally better at everything as we go. This lasts until early adulthood give or take a few years. But not that many. And whatever overall strength and vitality we have built up then plateaus and then declines from there. Take your bones for example.

  147.
The more good work and effort you expend, and the more strength you build, your bones will follow suit. And get stronger and stronger as you grow up. Reaching a maximum bone density at that same time shortly after early adulthood.

  148.
Smart strategies like weight training and physical work, proper movement etc. etc. can help maintain them over time. But nevertheless, bones start to decline in overall strength as we age. In other words, declining from whatever peak you have built up when you are young. Many areas inside your body all do the same thing.

  149.
So how does the trick to anti-aging work? Like every magic trick, the key is having the right focus. First, focus yourself on the point where you would naturally peak in your physical body – not just your muscle or bone strength, but just think of it all as one aggregated system that peaks at one spot. That spot that is or was your physical peak.

  150.
And then think of how high up that spot would reach if you had hit your innate natural potential for health and overall physical performance. A bit higher than where you actually got to? Yes, for most. But for now, no matter at all. In fact, this depressing gap will help us in our trick.

  151.
Here is where we get to the trick. All that imaginary distance between your actual peak, when you seemed to look and feel you best – and from there on up to that imaginary peak of what you could have been… Instead of seeming like a waste, or a lost opportunity, that is where your opportunity for the trick of anti-aging comes in.

  152.
Because now that you can see this distance between these two imaginary points in your mind, this creates a new point – the one you can still get to, that stands out there waiting for you…

  153.
If only you can get there. And that… Is going to take work. And a little more focus.

  154.
To reach all that untapped potential. And the best part is, start moving towards it today, and over the next few years, it will seem like you are aging in reverse.

  170.
Here is the solution to understanding an ever-more common anxiety-causing malady. And how the key to solving it is getting two things – knowing what it takes to get healthy – and the power of understanding how to choose the quickest line at the grocery store.

  171.
Ever feel like you can’t get everything done? Like there is a never ending to-do list that you can’t reach the bottom? And that some things just sit there, always undone?

  172.
Then the really hard part. There are so many exciting things that other people are doing – vacations, dinners out, exciting parties, events. The list goes on and on.

  173.
It can feel like we would rather be doing what almost anyone else is doing instead of what we have on our own plate in front of us. These days, they call this FOMO – the Fear Of Missing Out.

  174.
And it is more widespread than ever. It is the fear that what everyone else is doing is better. More fun, more social, more exciting. And that what we ourselves are doing might be… unimportant. Or worse.

  175.
Boring.

  176.
First, the trick to understanding the quickest line at the grocery store. While it may seem that you always choose the slower line, the truth is that it isn’t you. You aren’t flawed, or a naturally bad, slow or unlucky person. It is simply a numbers game. Four grocery lines to choose from?

  177.
By odds the chance you get the fastest line is only 25%. Maybe you can judge the size of the carts, and the speed of the cashiers, but you are still working against an uphill battle of the odds. And this leaves you feeling like you make the wrong choice. All. The. Time. Other people are going faster, getting where they want to go. While you are left waiting and going slower than everyone else.

  178.
Just like FOMO.

  179.
The trick is, there are more people around us than ever to compare ourselves to. Hence, the increase. But what is the real key to this stressful conundrum is to give yourself the gift of more time. Years, in fact, full of active, exciting, social activity that anyone would envy.

  180.
And that trick is to use your time the most wise way possible – to increase your health. It is said that we all have the same 24 hours in a day. But what that saying misses is that we can give ourselves the best gift there is. The gift of years of vibrant healthy activity. But only so long as we are willing to make the right investments (and miss out on the few specific things that are going to make you really miss out after all). Want to know more? Give us a call.

  196.
This was the heading of a new research publication from late 2018, that was the analysis of studies containing over 2.5 million study participants. The relationship between structure and function is well-established as a truism in modern thought. However, there has never been an analysis of so many individuals before, detailing the connection between musculoskeletal conditions and other chronic illnesses.

  197.
According to the researchers, it was already well-established that these types of problems run together. In other words, those with the issues assessed in the study (low back or neck pain, or hip or knee osteoarthritis), also more frequently have other non-joint related chronic illnesses as well.

  198.
In fact, the authors state the rate of “heart disease, neurological disorders, gastric ulcers and endocrine disorders” is higher in those with at least one of the known joint disorders described above. This was a primary motivation for performing their analysis, according to the authors.

  199.
So what they did was gather a collection of hundreds of relevant research papers. And those that met the strict criteria of the authors were statistically analyzed for their combined outcomes. These selected studies all started with a group of volunteers that had a known issue that included one of the above items, back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis of the hip or knee, or general osteoarthritis.

  200.
The selected studies all looked at common outcomes categorized as chronic disease, be it one of cardiovascular disease, cancer, etc. And where they found convincing evidence, was that the long-term outcomes of these patients was that they were developing significantly increased rates of cardiovascular disease.

  201.
The authors suggested several possible mechanisms for this finding. They noted that those with pain are often less active, and prone to the effects of inactivity.

  202.
They also noted the potential for cardiovascular concerns with many of the common pain medications used by these types of patients. Inflammation levels were also noted as a potential related element at play. The authors stated the following of the need to address these musculoskeletal problems:

  203.
“Considering their high global burden, addressing musculoskeletal conditions via public health strategies may have an impact on other chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease.”

  220.
Everyone loves an opportunity to relax and hang out with friends. Surprisingly, social activity is also extremely powerful when it comes to improving our health. There are volumes of research that show that our social life, and feeling connected to others, is in fact essential for good health.

  221.
Take for example, the studies they’ve done on loneliness. In one telling study, researchers took a group of elderly people and found that there was a powerful connection between feelings of loneliness and health outcomes, including mortality. In other words, social interaction was associated with how long these people lived.

  222.
The second surprising thing these people found was that feelings of limitation were also involved. They found that feelings of loneliness were strongly associated with feelings of limitation.

  223.
What these researchers said was that people that felt they had functional limitations (ie, inability to do things) were much more likely to experience substantial feelings of loneliness. And if we think about that for awhile, it makes sense. What if you are not sure you can actually manage surfing? Are you going to go with your friends to the beach to rent surf boards? Or on the week long surf trip?

  224.
This study of course was in older adults, where the situation becomes even more significant. What about the person that skips out on the lunch with friends because they don’t feel confident about it? Maybe they can’t drive far, or walk, or climb stairs, etc etc. And because they don’t know if they can make it, or they just don’t feel quite up to doing it, and without really even thinking about it, give up the social opportunities that are out there for them.

  225.
We all know how habitual decisions can be. Once you do something once (or in this case, don’t do something), it becomes much easier to make the same choice again. What if this could be prevented in the first place? Our ability to go out and enjoy life is very much dependent on our health and function. When was the last time you ducked out of an opportunity to spend time with friends or family because you weren’t sure you felt up to doing what everyone else was doing? Playing tennis, whitewater rafting, the possibilities are endless.

  226.
The funny thing about loneliness is that we aren’t alone. As humans, we all have the same sorts of problems. Chances are, if you feel a certain way, there are probably thousands, if not millions, of people that have had the same troubles.

  227.
So why not reach out? Grab your friend and bring them with you to your chiropractor and start learning about how to start feeling and functioning better, and have more confidence in your ability to do more, and not feel like you missed out! Once we start looking for ways to improve instead of at what we can’t do, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

  241.
How we approach our health is often as influential as any other factor. Our environment, genetics, etc., are very important, and often discussed as key factors in health outcomes. But we also have other, lesser-known distinctions that we often don’t even consider.

  245.
What do those funny personality quizzes have to do with your health? And are they any use, anyways?

  246.
How we approach our health is often as influential as any other factor. Our environment, genetics, etc., are very important, and often discussed as key factors in health outcomes. But we also have other, lesser-known distinctions that we often don’t even consider.

  247.
Consider the following. There are many popular personality typing systems. If you are familiar, various personality traits that we can possess as humans are divvied up and assigned names and scores and usually given various numbers or coded abbreviations. Basic traits we are all familiar with, like introverted vs extroverted. Flexible and spontaneous or structured and scheduled. Etc. etc.

  248.
The funny thing is that there is a little bit of the same thing when it comes to our health. We all approach things a little bit differently – but in the end, we want a great outcome. Health, fitness, performance, feeling good and looking great.

  249.
So what would some of these hypothetical differences in health approaches be?

  250.
How about the tendency to want to solve all of your problems yourself? Or some people tend to want to rely on the help of others? Some people think about their health frequently – while others don’t tend to think about it until it is quickly changing direction.

  251.
How about where you focus? Do just want to do what works, or is a philosophical framework to help guide your life choices? Of course, we all have aspects of each one, it is just that we may tend to favor one end of the scale or the other.

  252.
The thing is, is just like all of the differences among personality traits, they can be both positive or negative. One trait may serve you well for years, and then be a detriment when circumstances change. Or maybe a certain way of doing things has worked to prevent disaster but has also accumulated problems along the way, that then outweigh the value of where they first came from.

  253.
The point is, is that we are all different. And that maybe the real benefit of these types of ideas is being able to consider what we do, and why do them.

  254.
And just like there isn’t one magic system to understand how all of our different personality traits work, our health is also just as complicated – and variable. And that is why it helps to have someone that is full-time looking at the wide options of how we think about our health.

  255.
And like anything else, having that person who has the experience to personalize what’s most important for each individual. Because often times, no matter how much we learn about ourselves, those around us can often see our own patterns more clearly than we can ourselves.

  272.
American servicemen and women face serious danger and death as a part of the daily routine. On the front lines or not, there is substantial stress in the job of providing defense for the nation.

  273.
Despite the powerful images they leave in our minds, combat injuries are not the most common cause of harm in the armed forces. In fact, the actual greatest “foe,” is something unexpected as described by Major Vancil McNulty of the US Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventative Medicine. He says the greatest present threat to the readiness of the armed forces is named “‘injury.’”

  274.
The statistics on injured servicemen are quite grim. The publication cites the injury rate as 2,500 injuries per year per 1,000 soldiers. In total, 25 million days are lost to limited duty from musculoskeletal injury per year, accounting for 68% of the total days lost.

  275.
According to Major McNulty:

  276.
“The top threat to readiness is identified and can no longer remain hidden.”

  277.
Active service and veterans need proactive health care that physically addresses injuries and the health of the body, not just pharmaceuticals.

  278.
The treatment of injuries via pharmaceuticals and especially the sole reliance on opioids has created a new level of risk in health care, one that also affects members of the military.

  279.
A study of injured veterans being treated with opioids assessed the risk of overdose due to treatment. The study examined the variable of how well the participants were educated on the risks of opioid treatment. The startling findings showed that the risk of overdose from pain killing medication was not deterred by the level of education about that risk. Fully 70% felt that they were below average in terms of risk of overdose. The study authors stated the following:

  280.
“Our results suggest that veterans in both groups underestimated their risk for opioid overdose.”

  281.
Without a doubt, our veterans deserve quality care and a broad range of options, including health care that is holistic, comprehensive, and directly affects the health and strength of the body at the site of injury, and on the whole person as well. When it comes to health care, veterans deserve the best.
