  5.        <description>2 or 3 years ago I played around with making a peizo print head, whilst rummaging through some draws I came across a bag with the bits inside and thought it might be worth sharing, someone may be interested?.
  6. I searched for peizo materials and found them to be to expensive for diy, so looked for an alternative and found bimorphes
  7. at about 50p each, (buzzers), on a visit to my local poundland I purchased 3 bicycle buzzers to get the bimorphs as well as the drive electronics, the electronics are quit simple, a pulse generator feeding into a miniature step up transformer.

Version one consisted of a 30mm dia ally disc with a pocket to receive the bimorph and fluid, a hole in the top and the smallest hole I could drill opposite, I then closed the small hole with a ball bearing and hammer, connected it up to the cycle buzzer, added water and, &quot;nothing&quot;, after some head scratching I tried white spirit instead, (first thing that came to hand),
  9. &quot;nothing&quot;, more head scratching, then added a reservoir in the form of a syringe without the plunger, success, I then tried vodka, again success but water would not go through.
  10. I decided to make a better housing with the bimorph in the horizontal plane and build a driver and not rely on the cycle buzzer,

I used the insert from a spray can for the nozzle, a ne555 into a small transformer for the driver, I can vary the frequency and amplitude, the nozzle hole could do with being smaller but the results are very encouraging, its interesting to see the liquid spray out, as the frequency varies so does the spray pattern.

The main reason for doing this was the desire to print fluids that a standard print head can not cope with, they tend to be very fussy about viscosity and give up the ghost at the slightest excuse, a single printhead will never be as fast but mounted on a plotter above a powder bed similar to reprap, and using skeinforge or similar ??????.

  63. I just wanted to post that I gave it another shot. Keep in mind, I did not read all the posts so if somebody already tried this, forgive me. :) One of the biggest annoyances for the the designs I saw on the wiki was the complexity/assembly. I have endlessly toyed with other complicated assemblies and designs... Maybe these can be designed to be much simpler. It took me 15 minutes or less to build a working device.<br />

  65. Basically: A small piece of 1/4in acrylic. A few holes drilled to provide an inlet and an outlet flush with the surface of the acrylic. (I used small PCB drill bits to make small holes.) I used a small buzzer (1/2 inch-ish) acrylic and mounted it using 8mil x 1/2in double sided tape. I cut a small circle in the tape to leave the center of the buzzer unobstructed. I only used a dremmel and eyeballed the whole thing. I was a bit surprised when it worked.<br />

  67. On its own, however, I haven't overcome any of the 100 other annoying problems with this kind of system.<br />

  73. On a related note, this video shows the work I did with atomizer piezos (in this case it was running at 2.8MHz). It was... a bit too powerful. The plastic tip melted after a few seconds of operation.<br />

  85. I looked in to this for some time now. In particular the ultrasonic vaporizer piezos. I kind of abandoned it because piezos are a pain in the... Particularly if you don't have a fancy machine shop to make the nozzel. :)<br />

  87. The atomizers are interesting, and fun to play with but they are pretty different from the bimorphs. I started by building an atomizer with a simple (terrible) circuit. It worked. That much was fun. I could create gysers of water with them. With a little work, I was able to eject droplets from a nozzel. Then I hit a wall. It was too difficult to control, too slow, too unpredictable, too inefficient, ... I saw potential, but the physics is way over my head.<br />

  113. Inkjet technology has been around for quite many years. The early patents have been expired. If you build your ideas on these patents, it should be pretty safe. Also, most relative patents these days are about the high density multiple or even matrix of nozzles. What kind of company would still put serious money into a single nozzel print head? (just my thoughts, haven't done the patent search)<br />

  115. This is a rather interesting and informative thread. I feel the piezo actuator is a weak part, which was initially designed for making noise. The energy it can generate appears limited although successful test has been done to show it's kind of working. I'm thinking to use the ultrasonic vaporizer piezo disc.   225. The basic idea is to make almost the entire thing 3D printable. After 3D printing you would give the plastic some sort of treatment to make it watertight and ink resistant. Varnish may work for this. Once you have the printed part you can then make the small nozzle by using the epoxy/hot glue and a needle method. The piezo then sits on an O-ring to create a cavity for the ink. Next to that cavity is a reservoir to hold the rest of the ink. The main reason for this is to remove the need for the tubing and other equipment. To prime the nozzle you would fill the cavity with ink up to the top of the O-ring. A 3D printed clamp could then be used to secure the piezo on top.<br/>]]></description>

  247. Hmm I'm getting the impression that even given the circuit diagram he shows there, I'm going to need help to build it without killing myself. I'm going to speak with a friend tonight who has a lot of expertise in electronics. At least if I'm working with him on this then I can learn plenty at the same time. In the meantime, I'll stick to what I know... <br />

  249. I'm looking to orient my heads vertically, with the inlet at the top and the outlet at the bottom, despite this not being ideal in terms of purge air from the head. I'm still thinking about purging air from the head but I've got an idea on this which involves an additional output at the top of the head which could be used to prime the head.  I've added a debubbler before the inlet which should help prevent any air in the feed getting inside. It won't stop dissolved gas, but it's something. After the debubbler, I've added a check valve on the inlet in the hope that this will remove the need for head pressure but I doubt it and think this will need work. The check valve I've integrated is a simple ball check valve but I think the actuation time and internal volume will be too great. I'm thinking that replacing this with a elastomer duckbill valve might resolve this issue though. Finally, I've already come up with a stackable design which will allow me to sandwich the heads together in a space and component efficient way in order to keep costs down. This will give me my eight different heads integrated into a single assembly (perhaps even a 4x2 arrangement to limit the offsets on the X-Y positioning system).<br />

I can work the Arduino part out and can alter the frequencies I send to the Piezo but I'm having trouble ramping up the voltage to get anything like loud out of it - it's certainly not the fire alarm it took it from which was driving me nuts in the middle of the night, that's for sure! The ones I ordered Maplin have also arrived but I've no more luck with them either really.<br />

  304. I've been looking for a method of cheaply dispensing relatively small volumes of aqueous liquids for a while. I wanted a method more reliable that peri pumps (without the routine calibration hassle these come with after wear and tear etc.) for a medical testing app. I was thinking of trying to 3D print small syringes but I have eight different liquids to dispense and the size of the steppers was going to be an issue! The volumes I'm looking to dispense are between 25 - 500 ul so they're pretty large compared to what you guys are aiming for, but I'm thinking I can save on valuable reagents if I can reduce this and maintain precision dispensing. <br />

  306. For my part, I've made a few adjustments to Adrian's design to see if I can find a way of getting the thing to auto-prime and stay primed. I have a few years in the medical devices industry under my belt, so I've come across these issues before and have a couple of simple ideas which are worth a try. Since I don't own a printer I'm left to Shapeways parts but I've found their Fine Ultra Detail material (MJM process) to be pretty good for this type of fluid handling. I've got parts ordered in that and I'll report back with what I find.<br />
