41.

 42.

I am currently teaching organisational structures to my Year 12 groups, and they always ask for real examples of concepts such as delayering, chains of command and spans of control. I thought that this business example would be a great way to not only teach organisational structures, and motivation, but also link to the financial side looking at profits, and business failure.

 43.
After a poor trading period in 2017, and the announcement that 10 stores would be closed, Debenhams issued a profit warning’ after poor festive sales and a failure to entice shoppers to its post-Christmas sale.’ Profits are expected to have fallen by as much as £20million in the past year.

 44.
Last month the store in Farnborough closed its doors for the final time, meaning that meaning that shoppers wanting to visit a store will have to travel 10-15 miles to stores in Woking and Guildford, which are still currently open.

 45.
On February 8th, the company announced that they would be cutting 320 management jobs in a bid to reduce costs in the business. ‘The retailer said last month it was stepping up cost-cutting plans after it issued a profit warning because of disappointing trading over Christmas. ’This reduction in management jobs accounts for a quarter of all management position in the business.

 46.
The company hopes that it is able to re-deploy some of the worker (where it find other roles for those affected elsewhere in the business), however this is unlikely to find a solution for everyone who is affected.

 47.
Debenhams have announced that they “envisage our new structure being fully in place by the end of March.” This restructure it’s claimed will revive the businesses finances.

 48.
Activities in the classroom?

 49.
I will be using this case study with both Year 12 for structures and Year 13 for revision purposes as it can cover so many topic areas.

 50.
For year 12-

 51.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob4P79graGY – introduction to delayering video

 52.
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/feb/08/debenhams-to-axe-320-store-managers – Article from the Guardian explaining the process of delayering in action.

 53.
I would ask students to use this article to assess the benefits and constraints of delayering for the business. Encouraging them to use motivation, leadership as well as organisational structure theory in their answers. You could ask them to do this in groups, and then write as a timed 10 markers if you felt they had exam practice.

 54.
Alternatively, depending on the nature of the class you could have a debate with one side being the business and one side the employees, or benefits V constraints.

 55.
For Year 13–

 56.
I am trying to get them to link theory into answers… I would ask them to read the article (the Guardian one) and make a list of concepts that they think are included in this. Once they have done this, they can work in pairs to create their own exams questions and mark schemes for the article. This way they can develop their exam technique (and how answers are marked!) and understanding of theory and concepts on the syllabus.

 57.
I love using anything in my teaching that is actually linked to the real world so the students will understand!

 83.

 84.

The prelease came out at the end of November 2017 and is focused around the confectionary industry. This also links with a blog that I wrote last year about the Kraft and Cadbury takeover, ideal pre-reading for studying Edexcel.

 85.
The pre-release is an opportunity for students to do some of their own wider reading about this industry and link it to the bullet points laid out in the pre-release. This is very much a light touch ore-release from those that were used in the old BUSS4 for AQA.

 86.
Students will use the pre-release as the basis for application in the final exam they sit in the summer of 2018. All of paper 3 will focus questions around the confectionary industry and expect students to use not only the case studies given but all their own knowledge to form chains of analysis.

 87.
The exam board does not expect students to memorize large chunks of information and data, rather they are encouraged to take a holistic interest in the industry and recent trends. Teachers are able to support this by including activities for units 3 and 4 on the confectionary industry.

 88.
Some examples

 89.

 90.
Watch Dispatches – 25 min programme about the Kraft/ Cadbury takeover https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njgW-c3fAUk

 91.
Ask students to complete a Boston Matrix and product portfolio analysis for Cadbury, Nestle and Mars.

 92.
Complete a SWOT, and Ansoff’s matrix analysis for the companies in the industry.

 93.
Complete a market map looking at the key dynamics of the industry.

 94.
Analyse key financials for the industry.

 95.
Examine the culture of kraft and the original culture of Cadbury.

 96.
Analyse at the emergence of niche products into the market such as Divine chocolate, Hotel Cholate and gluten/dairy free options.

 97.

 98.
If teachers are able to adapt some of their activities to include this industry over the next few months then this should already create an awareness in the students of the types of trends that have been happening.

 99.
I would encourage every student to follow tutor 2u and their teachers on twitter to find out the latest news about the industry and example exam questions for the all-important Paper 3.

 118.

Anyone who is currently teaching the Edexcel syllabus will know that the pre-release for the basis for the final exam is the Health and Fitness industry. Trends in the industry is one of the things that I have asked my students to look at, they don’t need to know the ins and outs of every financial statement provided but a good overview from their wider reading would be useful to support the statements that they make in their exam. This will also help their analysis to become more contextualised, meaning that they can gain the higher level marks.

 119.
There has been a huge increase in low cost gyms over the past 5-10 years with Easygym (yes like EasyJet!) and Pure Gym opening across the country with memberships starting from around £16.99. Virgin Active and David Lloyd where memberships are often £65 – £100+ are starting to notice the difference. Customer trends show that people want flexibility in their contracts, they don’t need all the fancy tennis courts, spas and saunas, what they needs are cheap and accessible gyms that are open around the clock to suit their busy lifestyles.

 120.
This is where businesses such as 24hour fitness have come from, in the USA the popularity of such gyms mean that members can access the facilities at anytime of the day with their swipe card, again these customers don’t want classes they just want access to gym equipment at anytime of the day if they are shift workers, such as hospital staff, bartenders or cabin crew.

 121.

 122.
An activity that worked well with my students was to break the class down into small groups and ask each group to complete a SWOT of their given gym – mix this up with budget gyms, boutique and high end gyms. Once this has been completed students can engage in a carousel activity whereby they can gain the information from each other about the different gyms.

 123.
Another activity would be to ask students to complete a Porters Five Forces diagram for the Health and Fitness industry – again this gets them to think about what they understand from their research and the SWOT if you choose to do this first. This will make them really think about WHY so many new gyms have been able to access and enter the market over the past few years, and should allow them to engage with the level of competition in the industry.

 124.
You could finally complete this overview of trends with a Kahoot quiz of by setting an exam style question looking at the trends.

 125.
Example question “ To what extent do you think that the product is the most important element of the marketing mix for the Health and Fitness industry?

 126.
Example question “ The competitive nature of the industry in the UK has meant that Health and Fitness clubs must look to overseas markets to be success. Do you agree? Justfy your answer.

 127.

 128.
I’ve included below many news articles that you could tweet or print and share with your students to enable you and them to complete these activities.

 160.

 161.

2 major high street chains announced that they would be closing stores. Marks and Spencer (M&S) has announced it will be closing 6 stores and department store Debenhams will also be closing 10. This comes just months after M&S announced it would be shedding hundreds of jobs at it’s head office.

 162.
Will such a shift towards online shopping it really does make sense for businesses to be investing so much into traditional retail stores or should all retailers be developing app’s and e-tail technology’s?

 163.
These 2 businesses provide fascinating case studies for all business students to assess how the high street and how we shop is changing. According to The Guardian, Marks and Spencer will make 380 people redundant, however they have pledged to try and redeploy these employees to nearby stores. This comes as Debenhams plans to close not only 10 stores but also 11 warehouses, making hundreds of people unemployed.

 164.
The M&S CEO Steve Rowe claims that these changes are necessary as customers shopping habits are changing. People are more likely to browse online and pick up in store, or shop entirely online. Therefore there just isn’t the need for the amount of floor space that M&S has dedicated to clothing. However, the company do plan to open 34 stores that are dedicated just to food, again as social and shopping trends change they are aware that people are likely to pick up small amounts of food from somewhere like M&S rather than doing one huge big weekly shop.

 165.
Debenhams’s announced last week a 6.4% drop in pre- tax profits and quickly on the back of this now plan to close 10 stores and 11 warehouses. CEO Sergio Bucher who took over at the company in October 2016, says that customers priorities are no longer focused on clothes shopping. They are now looking at other ways to try to engage customers with their products creating a great mobile platform as well as changing the way that they offer click and collect.

 166.
Below I have suggested some ways in which I think that this could be used as a revision case study.

 167.

 168.
A SWOT analysis would be a good way to start and to get students thinking about an overview of the 2 businesses – maybe putting students in pairs to focus on a business each they can they teach each other about the business they haven’t looked at. This would also enable students to reflect on many of the topics they have covered over the past 2 years, PEST factors, customers service, technology etc.

 169.

 170.

 171.
Porters generic strategies would be a great example of how to ask students to analyse what could happen when businesses become ‘stuck in the middle’ and don’t utilise one of the suggested differentiation or low cost approaches to be a successful business.

 172.

 173.

 174.
Ansoffs matrix is another good tool to get students to look at the strategies that they are currently employing and the risk associated with each – whether they are likely to work. This should get students to start to think about judgement.

 175.

 176.

 177.
Force Field analysis – Lewin – this is another fantastic concept to ask students to think about the forces that have actually brought about the changes – so the CEO’s but what else, and who might resist the change. You could also extend this further by asking students to consider HOW this maybe managed in the workplace.

 178.

 179.

 180.
Product life cycle/ Market Mapping/ Boston Matrix are all other ways in which you can get students to think about why this has happened.

 181.

 182.
Hopefully by asking students to do this- it will not only get them to reconsider some key theory but also hopefully see how so many concepts can be applied to the same context, all be in different ways.

 206.

Back in 2010 Kraft the huge American conglomerate who is responsible for making products such as Philadelphia cream cheese and Oreo’s took over the iconic British company. There was much media coverage about the issues that this could cause with the possibility of the original heritage and culture Cadbury being changed as a result.

 207.
Over the years we have seen Kraft launch products such as Dairy Milk with Daim, Dairy Milk with Oreo, and chocolate Philadelphia – merging original Cadbury products with those produced by Kraft. Last year Kraft announced that the chocolate in the Crème egg would no longer be Dairy Milk- a fact which outraged many people. In addition this year the multipacks of Crème Eggs would only contain 5 eggs not 6, and there couldn’t be a price reduction to reflect this.

 208.
Then this week it was reported in the news that Cadbury would be launching a new flavour of the Crème Egg, a Crème Egg with Oreo pieces and crème inside. This is a huge change from the Crème Egg as we know it which went on sale back in 1971, when Cadbury bought JS Fry & Sons. The egg originally known as the Frys Egg prior to the takeover hasn’t really changed much over the years. So how will people respond to this latest change of an iconic Cadbury product? The full size egg is available in Canada, with the mini versions (like mini eggs) being sold in the UK.

 209.
The company claim, “It’s not a replacement for the original Crème Egg (perish the thought) but the new egg has an Oreo cream and biscuit filling and different packaging.”

 210.
The original Crème Egg was made in Bristol many years ago by JS Fry & Sons “It’s fair to say that Bristol has never really forgiven the new owner after its decision to close Bristol’s Cadbury Factory back in 2010, resulting in the loss of 400 jobs.” Only 12% of those surveyed in Bristol thought that the new Oreo egg was a good idea.

 211.
For any business teacher who is wanting to use Kraft and Cadbury as a case study this covers a plethora of topics on both the AS and A level syllabus. This case would be great to be used for Boston Matrix, Ansoff matrix, managing change, business culture and ethics within a business as well as continuing the look at takeovers and synergies.

 212.
A great task as we end the current A2 teaching would be to use the Cadbury/ Kraft study as a revision task to cover the AS and A Level syllabus. This would also be a good way to get the students thinking about using context more in their answers.

 241.

On the new business specifications for varying exam boards for A level and Vocational, ethics and corporate social responsibilities are covered. This is a topic that students always find interesting and are sometimes surprised by what they find out.

 242.
Ethics are moral guidelines which govern good behaviour. So behaving ethically is doing what is morally right. [http://www.tutor2u.net/business/reference/business-ethics-introduction]

 243.
Whilst planning a lesson the other day I considered how to teach business ethics. Students automatically think of sweat shops as ways in which businesses operate unethically. But there are many other ways:

 244.

 245.
Advertising campaigns can embellish figures

 246.
Businesses can target children with products that may be inappropriate

 247.
Products can be of poor quality because of lack of checking

 248.
Tobacco companies can promote themselves as being ethical

 249.

 250.
You could start the lesson by posing some questions on the board for the students to think about –

 251.

 252.
Should businesses profit from problem gambling?

 253.
Should supermarkets sell lager cheaper than bottled water?

 254.
Is ethical shopping a luxury we can’t afford?

 255.
Should fashion retailers use suppliers who don’t pay a living wage?

 256.

 257.
There is also a great video here on youtube [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoE8XlcDUI8] that can be used to introduce the idea of business ethics.

 258.
I thought about a nice activity to get students developing arguments for both sides of the argument for ethics and to think about stakeholder impact.

 259.
Statements can be put onto sort cards such as –

 260.

 261.
Sweatshops being used to produce cheap goods

 262.
The price of life saving medicine being priced so high those ill cannot afford it

 263.
Cigarette being advertised to children in developing countries

 264.

 265.
Ask students to then rank these in terms of which is the most unethical and give reasons for these judgments. This should take the students a while in groups of around 4.

 266.
Then they could consider which stakeholders have been affected and how they have been impacted by the businesses’ actions. This could either be in a positive or negative way.

 267.
Once they have finished this then ask them to pretend that they are the CEO of the company and they have to justify the actions of the business to the rest of the class. One of the biggest skills that a student can develop at A level is that of justifying points and effectively presenting arguments. A lesson like this should enable the students to do this.

 268.

 397.
BHS is a great case study for any business teacher currently teaching PESTLE, Ansoff’s Matrix, Porters generic strategy, culture, leadership or e-commerce. To be honest you could cover so many topics with this ONE business.

 398.
Not long after it disappeared from the high street, it has announced that this brand will continue as a website only business.

 399.
So, will BHS work as an e-commerce brand?

 400.
Woolworths tried the same strategy a few years ago and really does rely on customer loyalty and nostalgia for a brand. But did BHS, like Woolworths, just have its day? BHS sold clothes – with huge competition on the high street, they sold Christmas goods again with competition from the supermarkets, John Lewis and Marks and Spencer, and finally they had a café… just like the supermarkets, Marks and Spencer and the rise of Starbucks and Costa Coffee also targeting the same market.

 401.
As mentioned above, BHS are hoping to target loyal customers:

 402.
‘According to the Managing Director, David Anderson, the BHS re-brand will be counting on the loyalty of the store’s original customers.’
403.

 404.
But who exactly is a loyal customer?

 405.
‘With a customer base of well over one million people and the fact that we have secured contracts with so many leading suppliers who are providing products that were among the most popular with our shoppers, we are in the best possible position for launch.
406. Of course, this audience is likely to be an older demographic – those who faithfully shopped from BHS up until the very end.
407. It makes sense that if the customers remain, so too will their desire to shop from BHS.’
408.
409. If BHS are targeting their older demographic, will they have the ability to go online and shop from laptops, tablets and mobiles? Will they even offer something that cannot be bought elsewhere in one of the other stores previously mentioned?

 410.
Their online is aiming to focus on its previously biggest-selling products:

 411.
‘BHS is hoping to draw in loyal customers with a limited but high quality product range.
412. With 75% of the store’s most popular stock being homeware and lighting, it will be specifically concentrating on these areas for the time being.’

 413.
This puts them in direct competition with many other homeware firms, not only the supermarkets, Next and Marks and Spencer but also some already established companies online such as Made.com, Habitat and Maison du Monde. If they are looking to target loyal customers then wouldn’t it be better to still have some high street presence to focus on those older customers who may still wander around window shopping at the weekend and even during the quieter weekday periods if they are retired.

 414.
BHS makes a great case study for any business teacher at the moment, and with the BBC programme documenting the collapse of the business this is a great consolidation or introduction business to look at.
