One of the most popular sports in Europe and the Americas is soccer. There is early evidence of soccer being played as a sport happened in China during the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. There were recorded facts that also support the fact that Romans and Greeks used to play ball for fun and frolic. There were some facts that point to Kyoto in Japan where kicking of ball was a popular sport. However, it is said that early growth of the modern soccer started in England. But King Edward III banned soccer in 1365 owing to the growing incidents of violence as well as military indulgence in the sport. In 1424 King James I of Scotland also proclaimed in the Parliament— “Na man play at the Fute-ball” (No man shall play football) In 1815, a major development took place that made soccer popular in universities, colleges, and schools. The history of modern-day soccer was established in 1863. In October 1863, eleven representatives from London clubs and schools met at the Freemason’s Tavern to set up common fundamental rules to control the matches amongst themselves. The outcome of this meeting was the formation of the Football Association.

Welcome to History’s Greatest Teams , our retrospective on, well, the greatest teams in soccer history. Did you know association football is over 150 years old? Somehow it is, and over that time, certain teams have risen to the top. Whether it’s a club or national team, The Center Circle thought it would be interesting to look back on those illustrious squads. If you’d like to see a team highlighted in History’s Greatest Teams 1974 Netherlands The Germans didn’t even touch the ball and they were down 1-0. That’s how the 1974 World Cup Final began, when the Netherlands national team waged Total Football on the host team. Armed with their distinctive style and its muse, Ballon d’Or winner Johan Cruyff, the Dutch had cruised through the tournament. But now they had run up against a West Germany squad stacked with talent. Despite spellbinding the Germans to a second minute goal, the Dutch would concede two before the first half was out. The Oranje scrambled for an equalizer in the second, but nothing materialized. Thus, the greatest team to never win a World Cup was born. But let’s back up to 1965 to take in the whole picture. The General Total Football didn’t just spontaneously emerge from the football ether. Its originator and mastermind was Rinus Michels, the legendary Dutch manager. In 1965, he took over for Netherlands’ club team Ajax, who were in the thick of a relegation battle. Michels, a 12-year Ajax player, avoided the drop and then levitated his old club to ridiculous heights. They won the league four out of the next five seasons, a magnificent turnaround from their pathetic state just a few years prior. Of course, it helps that Michels had Cruyff by his side. Genius coaches don’t find success unless they have the right players around them – and Michels had the platonic ideal of totaalvoetbal in the young Cruyff. Together the two created a tactical system that was counterintuitive and revolutionary. By allowing Cruyff’s tremendous talent to freely roam the field and undress opposing defenses, Michels’ best player wasn’t just restricted to a singular position. In fact, Total Football’s strategy didn’t just grant that right to Cruyff, but the entire team. For it to work properly, a player who moves out of position is replaced by a teammate, making anyone an attacker or defender. Pressure on the ball and finding space where the defense gives it were two of the main tenets. As you can imagine, this fluidity demands insane levels of intelligence, versatility, and fitness. Nicknamed “The General”, Michels cultivated creativity and coherence, whether he was managing Ajax or the Netherlands national team. After guiding Ajax to their first European Cup title in 1971, Michels decided he wanted to upgrade his managerial philosophy and skills to FC Barcelona in Spain. Although he would find success there, nothing he achieved from that point on could touch those unbeatable Ajax teams. During his stint with Barca, he stepped in at the last minute to manage the Dutch national team in 1974. Cruyff, the Conductor How does the arguably the greatest European player of all-time only appear in two major international tournaments and never win? Easy, just leave all witnesses of your skill in awe. When former players speak about him, words like “genius” and “heart of a revolution” pop up without hyperbole.

The English currently have a points difference of four better than Ireland and 25 more than Wales, so unless Scotland beat Ireland and Italy overcome Wales to cause two upsets in Saturday's first two fixtures, Stuart Lancaster's side will almost certainly have to chase down a total and re-establish a superior points difference. Lancaster has made just one change to the team that beat Scotland 25-13 last weekend. Geoff Parling returns to the starting line up to replace Dave Attwood, who drops out of the match-day squad. Nick Easter takes Parling's spot on the bench, starting as second-row cover. England lost against France in their opening encounter of last year's tournament and that narrow defeat in Paris ultimately cost them the title. The English will be out to exact revenge at Twickenham, where they have not lost to Les Blues since August 2007. Philippe Saint Andre has made two injury-enforced changes to the team that eased past Italy in Rome. Clermont Auvergne have pressured Saint Andre into omitting Camille Lopez from the squad, to allow him time to rest his injured knee, so Stade Francais' Julian Plisson comes at fly-half to win his sixth cap for France. Read more: Parling returns as Lancaster drops Attwood Robshaw fed up with finishing second What must England do to win? Plisson and Sebastien Tillous Borde become the 16th half-back partnership to start under Saint Andre's reign. Eddy Ben Arous has not recovered from the arm injury he suffered in Rome so Vincent Debaty replaces him in the front row. Jules Plisson starts in place of Camille Lopez Remi Tales and Uini Atonio have been recalled to the bench to replace Plisson and Debaty. Les Blues are technically still in contention for the title, but for them to win the championship, the top three teams would have to lose and France would have to beat England by a massive margin. TEAMS: England: M Brown; A Watson, J Joseph, L Burrell, J Nowell; G Ford, B Youngs; J Marler, D Hartley, D Cole, G Parling, C Lawes, J Haskell, C Robshaw (capt), B Vunipola. Replacements: T Youngs, M Vunipola, K Brookes, N Easter, T Wood, R Wigglesworth, D Cipriani, B Twelvetrees France: S Spedding, Y Huget, G Fickou, M Mermoz, N Nakaitaci, J Plisson, S Tillous-Borde; V Debaty, G Guirado, N Mas, A Flanquart, Y Maestri, T Dusautoir (capt), B Le Roux, L Goujon. Replacements: B Kayser, R Slimani, U Atonio, R Taofifenua, D Chouly, R Kockott, R Tales, M Bastareaud. KICK-OFF: Saturday at 17.00 PAST THREE MEETINGS: STATS: Neither team has won this fixture by more than 10 points since England won 34-10 in March 2009. England have scored more tries (11) and made more clean breaks (39) than any other side in this season's Six Nations. France have only beaten England at Twickenham twice since 2005.

Here are the top 15 after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. 15. USMNT Getty Images The U.S. National Team was successful in the World Cup run solely by exiting group stage. It was not enough to help their FIFA ranking, however, as they dropped from 13th to 15th. 14. Italy Italy bowed out of the World Cup a lot earlier than expected. That was properly reflected in their FIFA ranking as they dropped five spots from 9th to 14th. 13. Greece Greece were one of the teams that surprised many by exiting group stage. They did well enough in the World Cup to move up one spot in FIFA rankings from 14th to 13th. 12. Chile 12. Chile Chile were rather successful in the World Cup, only losing in the Round of 16 because of penalty kicks. They were one of the teams to actually move up in the FIFA rankings from 14th to 12th. 11. Portugal Portugal were yet another team to bow out earlier than expected in the World Cup. They were one of the teams to drop the most in FIFA rankings, falling down seven spots from 4th to 11th. 10. France France did not get as far as they hoped in the World Cup, but they did make quite the impression. France made a huge leap in FIFA rankings by moving up seven spots from 17th to 10th. 9. Switzerland 9. Switzerland Switzerland were able to make it out of group stage, but then they faced Argentina who knocked them out of the World Cup. That was only a slight blow for the Swiss, falling three spots from 6th to 9th. 8. Spain Spain's loss in group stage was one of the biggest shocks of the World Cup. Their new FIFA ranking is a direct reflection of it, as Spain went from being 1st to 8th, dropping seven spots. 7. Brazil Brazil did well in the World Cup until the last two matches. They took a big hit in FIFA rankings by dropping four spots from 3rd to 7th place. 6. Uruguay Uruguay were carried in the World Cup by star Luis Suarez. After his departure because of his biting incident, Uruguay were knocked out of the tournament. However, they moved up in FIFA rankings. It was only a move from 7th to 6th, but that's better than dropping.

Shi**y African. Shi**y black people. The players of Koa Bosco have suffered many such racist taunts since their football club was formed in 2013. On occasion, physical violence has even flared on the pitch, says the Italian team's manager Domenico Mammoliti. "The ignorance of some people..." he sighs, revealing a hint of exasperation at the abuse he says his players have endured. Life in the Italian lower leagues is clearly tough. Yet it's nothing compared to the journey undertaken by this team of African immigrants and refugees from countries such as Ghana, Senegal, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Mali, the Ivory Coast, Togo and Sudan. Many risked their very existence crossing the Mediterranean Sea on rickety boats, often fleeing war, poverty and persecution in search of a better life in Europe. The U.N. Refugee Agency estimates that more than 3, 500 people perished making the same journey in 2014. This year, 1, 850 are believed to have died out of roughly 100, 000 people who have attempted the crossing. And for most of those who do make it, life in Europe is hardly a paradise of milk and honey. Work away from the football pitch for most Koa Bosco players consists of picking fruit on farms for a paltry wage, Mammoliti said. And they are the ones lucky enough to find employment. A perilous journey Koa Bosco midfielder Almani Camara, originally from Gambia, told CNN that he arrived in Italy after boarding a smugglers' boat in Libya. Camara said he risked the trip as he "doesn't hear any gunfire" or "see any dead people" in Europe as he did in Libya. His vessel was crammed full of people from all over Africa and had to be rescued after running into what he describes as "difficulties." The journey, he admits, could have easily have ended in tragedy - yet still the migrants flock to Europe. CNN's Christiane Amanpour witnessed a packed boat intercepted by the Italian navy close to the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa only last month. One person had died after suffocating on the ramshackle wooden boat while three people had to be medevaced off. Such horrors all too familiar to the players of Koa Bosco. But the last few weeks have provided a welcome distraction from harder times and memories of struggles elsewhere. After just two years of existence, the team based in the southern town of Rosarno - situated in the Calabria region which forms the toe of Italy's geographical "boot" - achieved promotion from the bottom tier of the country's football league pyramid.

Alabama’s athletic programs bring in a lot of money for the university, much of which comes from the football program. The 2013-14 fiscal year was no different. According to Al.com, Alabama football had “a $53.3 million surplus with revenues of $95.3 million.” That’s a lot of dough and is $6.1 million more than the $47, 136, 001 it brought in in 2012-13. With football clearly being its biggest contributor, Alabama athletics as a whole generated a surplus of just over $33 million - $33, 050, 145 to be exact. The athletics department then “transferred $9.1 million back to the university.” How generous. Much of the revenue the football program reports comes from ticket sales ($34.9 million) and “contributions” ($20.7 million), but the program also saw gains in broadcast/television/radio/Internet rights (from $7.2 million to $9.1 million) and royalties, licensing and ads ($1.3 million to $4.5 million). Other small forms of revenue included $730, 580 from “sports camps” and a whopping $58, 622 from concession stand sales. Meanwhile, the program spent $41, 993, 027 on its overall operating expenses with its top expense going toward coach salaries ($12.8 million). Additionally, the program spent $4.2 million on fundraising and marketing, $3.8 million on athletic student aid, $2.7 million on game expenses, $2.7 million on facilities maintenance, $2.6 million on university support staff, $2.5 million on team travel, $1.6 million on equipment and supplies and $1.2 million on recruiting, among a bevy of other expenses. So it's happy times for all in Tuscaloosa. Oh, and just to show how feasible it is for certain schools to pay its players; if Alabama hypothetically paid its scholarship football players $3, 000 each from its $53, 269, 715 surplus, the program would have still brought in $53, 014, 715 in the 2013-14 fiscal year. Of course, it's more complicated than that. The athletic department would have to pay all scholarship athletes, not just football players, and most athletic departments don't pull in anywhere near the amount of money that Alabama does. Still, when you break down the numbers, it really seems like a no-brainer.

Since the Lega Calcio folks just published the schedule for the 2011-2012 Italian soccer season, I thought I’d bring this post back up to the top so people who are traveling in Italy this year have an idea of how to find out whether there are games going on while they’re visiting. I might be in the minority here, but when I first started looking at the Italian Serie A soccer schedules I found them really hard to figure out. In fact, I’ll admit that I still sometimes find them kind of unnecessarily confusing. So since I have to assume I’m not the only one who thinks the whole thing’s a head-scratcher, since I’ve gotten questions from some of you about seeing soccer games during your Italian vacations, and since the first games of the 2008-2009 season are fast approaching, here’s a little primer about how to read Italian soccer schedules. First of all, all the teams in the Serie A league (that’s the top league in the country) play each other twice during a season. Not only that, the order that teams play one another in is the same in the second half of the season as it is in the first half. In other words, a team will work its way through the list of other teams and then, when it’s gotten through the list, it’ll start over at the beginning and work through the list again in the same order. Sounds organized and clever, right? Well, because it’s all so organized, what the Serie A folks have done is this – instead of listing the entire season’s games out chronologically, they create a chart with each pairing listed only once. It looks sleek, and the clever design is very Italian. But in my opinion, it’s too clever by half. Here’s what I mean: You’ll see here on this 2008-2009 Fiorentina schedule that their season begins with a game against Juventus, followed by a game against Napoli. The last team on their pairing schedule is Milan, after which they start at the top and play Juventus again, then Napoli, and so on. On each side of the team names you’ll see dates and numbers. The numbers refer to which game it is in the 38-game season, and they just go up by one for each game. The dates refer to when each pair of teams listed plays (remember, Italian dates are written day/month/year!). So far so good – but how do you know which games are actually in Florence and which are away games? This is where my brain starts going in circles & I second-guess myself into a state of confusion. So here’s the first bit of important information: The team listed in the left column is the home team for the first half of the season. What this means is that for Fiorentina’s first game of the season against Juventus on August 31, 2008, they’re playing in Florence on their home field. That’s easy enough to get your head around, but the whole thing flips when you’re talking about the second half of the season. In other words, for the second meeting of Fiorentina and Juventus on January 25, 2009, Fiorentina (listed in the left column this time) is playing on Juve’s home turf in Turin. What it boils down to is this: whatever team name is physically next to the box with the date in it is the “home” team for that date .

In a wide-open friendly that produced a barrage of chances, poor defending and a stunning finish, the U.S. men’s national soccer team scored twice in the closing moments to shock the sixth-ranked Netherlands, 4-3, on Friday at Amsterdam Arena. Danny Williams scored the equalizer in the 88th minute and Bobby Wood broke the deadlock in the 90th as the Americans overcame a 3-1 deficit in the last 20-plus minutes to produce one of the greatest away victories in the program’s recent history. It also marked the first time the United States has defeated the Netherlands in five meetings (1-4-0). Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored twice and was credited with the assist on Memphis Depay’s accidental deflection. Gyassi Zardes, a 23-year-old forward for the Los Angeles Galaxy, and John Brooks also scored for the Americans, who will face World Cup champion Germany on Wednesday in Cologne. The Americans were confident and assertive as the match unfolded, holding possession and creating regular opportunities. Jasper Cillessen thwarted Zardes’ clear bid from 12 yards. Michael Bradley smacked the right post from the top of the box. And Brek Shea picked the right angle to infiltrate the penalty area but did not fool Cillessen with his low effort. The missed opportunities bit the Americans in the 27th minute when Depay swung in a left-side cross toward Huntelaar, who slipped into a pocket behind Brooks and in front of Ventura Alvarado for a six-yard header past Brad Guzan. The Americans, ranked No. 27, answered in the 33rd minute when Zardes used the outside of his inside foot to one-time Fabian Johnson’s cross into the near corner for his first career goal in seven appearances. Halftime could not arrive soon enough, though, as the 2014 World Cup semifinalists were reliably dangerous and applied heavy pressure. An apparent goal in the closing moments was nullified by a foul call in the box. The Dutch picked up where they left off at the start of the second half. A moment after Guzan stopped Robin van Persie’s close-in header, Huntelaar gained inside position on substitute Michael Orozco and headed Gregory van der Wiel’s cross over the beleaguered goalkeeper.
