3.    <p>When I first downloaded Brackets, I didn't quite understand how it worked (i.e. I could not for the life of me figure out how to write HTML and generate a preview). After a little trial and error,  googling, and YouTube videos, the answer is actually quite easy. Basically, the preview works in Brackets if your file is saved as an HTML file. Let's go through this step by step to show you how I set up my work in Brackets.</p>
4.    <p>I like to store my blog posts in one place. And right now, pretty much everything is stored in Google Drive for me.

7.        <li>Create a new folder in Google Drive and name it BlogPosts or whatever you want.</li>
8.        <li>Open Brackets</li>

10.        <li>Create a new document</li>
11.        <li>Save it (name it anything you want- e.g., the name of a post, etc.)</li>
12.        <li>Then right click and rename it by adding the extension .html</li>

14.    <p>That's it! Now you can click the preview button in Brackets and see the outcome as you write your code.

17.        Now when I want to make a new blog post, I just open brackets and write my post in html. Once I'm done, just copy and paste the HTML code into a new Blogger post (of course, make sure the post's html editor is selected!) and I'm done! Where has this been my entire life...?!!!

19.    <h1>Some Hints</h1>

21.            <li>At the bottom of the editor, you get to choose what kind of code editor you want to use (e.g. C++, html, etc). So if you're writing html, make sure you choose that to get all the bells and whistles of the Brackets' editor for HTML. </li>
22.            <li>If your html code is off in some way, the preview will become disconnected. Fix this by either refreshing the preview pane or fixing the code. I find that it stays connected and works best when the entire post is bounded by the "body" code. </li>
23.            <li>The easiest way to make the font size bigger is to just use CTRL+ +sign</li>

40. Then I thought-- what about using Simplenote? It makes use of basic text, has a bunch of different apps (for Windows, Android, etc.), and handles markdown. The desktop version even comes with a preview and I could access it from everywhere! In fact, I'm writing this post in Simplenote! But I hit a snag- Simplenote works great for handling markdown, but there's not really a preview for html/xhtml code. Of course you could write in HTML, but Simplenote isn't the best editor for that (no numbered lines, auto codes, colors).</div>

I haven't tested Brackets yet so I can't really give a full review of how well it worked for me... and after writing this post in Simplenote, I'm kind of lamenting that I can't make markdown work in Blogger (<a href="http://blog.saliya.org/2014/08/blogging-with-markdown-in-blogger.html" style="box-sizing: border-box; overflow-wrap: break-word; word-wrap: break-word;" target="_blank">there are ways</a>). Markdown is so much faster and easier than html! At any rate, I think what's going to happen is that I'll probably use one of those html editors regularly, but in a pinch, I'll use Simplenote and just copy and paste Simplenote's Preview directly into Blogger (there are quirks...like different texts, etc.). Still....</div>

62. I also use keyboard shortcuts a lot and I could not for the life of me figure out the shortcut to delete a file in the Explorer window. When I googled for a solution, I came up with all kinds of answers such as Command+Delete (did nothing for me) or even downloading a program to write to the registry (a kinda scary proposition for me). Again, the solution is so simple-- all you have to do is look what the shortcut actually is by opening any folder in Explorer, going to ribbon (my ribbon is auto-hidden), and hovering your mouse over the command to see what the shortcut actually is. To be honest, I think Pilot is really missing out on a huge demographic here, adding a nice retractable all-metal pen to their affordable Metropolitan line would have a huge market!<br />

Just open a new tab and type Google Apps. You may or may not need to log in again depending on how you're browser is configured.<br />

986. <u><b>(Extra) Step 16.5: adding more mappings</b></u><br />
987. I usually take one more step at this point and map one more url so if someone adds "www" in front of my domain, it will also go to the correct place. In other words, whether someone types "test.MyDomainName.com" or "www.test.MyDomainName.com", I want them to go the same site.<br />

989. To do this, just repeat Step 16, but use "www.test" as the Host Name. <br />

But one of the things I struggled with the most was how to read and annotate PDFs easily and quickly and keep them synchronized. You see, one of the things I liked the most about reading on iPad was iAnnotate. The app allowed you to download PDF files from Dropbox or Google Drive, read/annotate them, and sync them back to the online cloud of choice. This was a pretty painless process and saved me from having multiple copies of documents all over the place. Unfortunately, I couldn&#39;t seem to find an easy, automatic solution that did the same thing in Android. After much searching and testing, I finally found &lt;a href=&quot;http://xodo.com/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;XODO PDF Reader and Annotator&lt;/a&gt;. It has a good toolset for annotation and it can sync pdfs from Dropbox and &lt;a href=&quot;http://blog.xodo.com/2014/09/10/google-drive-support-xodo-pdf-reader-android/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;Google Drive&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;(you can connect Dropbox or Google Drive, open a document from one of those cloud storage options, annotate the document, and then close the document and it&#39;ll sync back to drive where the original document is stored). There are some quirks with XODO-- it&#39;s not perfect, but it was the best solution I found and the only one that made me think I could really abandon reading on iPad altogether.&lt;br /&gt;

1004. Now that I've started out with my final choice, let me talk about the other three that I was playing with (Folia, Google PDF Viewer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader for Android) and explain why I found them wanting.<br />

1006. <a name='more'></a><b><u>Folia</u></b><br />
1007. Folia was the original iAnnotate app for Android, but almost from the beginning, iAnnotate for Android was seriously lacking as compared to its iPad counterpart. Eventually, iAnnotate for Android became Folia and was intended to be more comparable to the iPad app. In fact, it was mean to go above and beyond the app and essentially be a <a href="http://thenextweb.com/apps/2014/08/14/folia/#gref" target="_blank">whole new ecosystem for managing documents</a>. And therein was the problem. If I was already heavily invested in Google Drive (I actually pay for storage) or Dropbox (my linked PDFs for Zotero are stored in Dropbox) or another cloud storage service, why would I want to switch? Moreover, while the Folia architecture may be great for linking different documents, I've been leaning more and more toward a service such as Google Drive and increasingly One Drive where I could actually create documents, not just read and annotate documents. Folia also has a <a href="http://www.folia.com/pricing/" target="_blank">20 document limit for the Free account</a>. If you want more files in Folia, you'll have to pay $1.99/month. I have <i>hundreds</i> of PDFs-- I just didn't see myself paying for Folia storage (not to mention that I had already paid for the iPad version!). Finally, the most unforgivable sin, <a href="http://support.branchfire.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2101441-folia-faq" target="_blank">according to Folia's FAQ, you had to export each pdf in order to see markups made with Folia</a>:<br />

(again, I'm a researcher, I read a lot of pdfs) Finally, I also didn't find reading PDFs that great in Folia for Android. For one thing, it didn't have a lock screen function (which allows you to resize a PDF and freeze the resizing for easier reading.<br />

Like Folia, if my workflow was already set up with Dropbox or Google Drive or OneDrive, why would I want to pay for Adobe&#39;s Document Cloud? 1043. Step 1: Remove the Tornado refill top any way you can. (I just pulled it off with pliers)<br />
1044. Step 2: Cut the G2 refll to 3.3/8"  (8.5852cm) (I came to these measurements through trial and error).<br />
1045. Step 3: Tape the Tornado refill top to the G2 refill and voila, works perfectly. The taping doesn't even have to be that precise or careful. I just pulled off some Scotch tape and done (please note, that I've found that it works better if you put the refill into the body of the pen first to make sure that the retracting mechanism latches to the refill properly)  :)<br />

1084. I've been using it for about a year now and I've been quite happy with it. I'll try to post more pictures about how I use in the coming weeks. But for now, I'm writing this post to share a free template that I made for it. Since I refill the calendar when it's done, a perpetual calendar attached to it would just be removed regularly-- defeating the purpose of a perpetual calendar. So after much tinkering, I finally managed to make a free-standing perpetual calendar insert for my Midori! In the spirit of sharing, you can download it for free (I swear, no malware or anything!). DBAN downloads as an ISO file and runs as a bootable program so in order to use it, you will have to either burn it to a disk to install it as a bootabable USB drive. Since I don't want to burn a disk, the steps below describe how to use DBAN installed on a bootable USB drive.<br />

In other words, this step is about telling your computer to not boot its usual OS and instead boot from your USB and entails two parts- 1) making sure the option to boot from USB is available and 2) choosing the USB to boot.<br />

1179. <li>I found it easiest to just use the autonuke function of DBAN, but there's a caveat-- if you use autonuke and leave the USB drive attached, DBAN will also erase the USB drive and you'll have to create a new bootable drive all over again. In order to prevent this from happening, after typing autonuke and hitting Return to run the command, the program begins running and a progress bar appears. Once the progress bar comes back with "...........ready." (this happens amazingly quickly so watch out!), <u>remove the USB drive</u>. Even without the USB drive, the program should keep running (in the above video, you can see this at timestamp 3:13-3:20) and now you can reuse the bootable USB drive. </li>

1186. This step assumes you have recovery disks or a bootable USB with your desired OS. After DBAN finishes, the OS will have been wiped from the computer. If you want to make the computer workable again, you'll need to reinstall the OS. If your OS was Windows, here's what you do-- depending on whether you have recovery disks are not.<br />

1188. I've found that it's easiest if you have an external CD/DVD drive AND recovery disks. In the case of my Eee PC, it was just a matter of a few steps:<br />

What follows below is a post about some of the nuts and bolts, trials and tribulations of the whole setup process...</div>

After doing a little Internet research, I realized that a simple antenna would probably give us quite a few channels. <a href="http://johnsorrentino.net/blog/2014/02/24/cutting-the-cable-in-new-york-city/" target="_blank">I am particularly indebted to this post</a>. I decided on the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Mohu-Curve-Designer-HDTV-Antenna/dp/B00F3ZO710/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1424640559&sr=1-8" target="_blank">MoHu Curve 30 from Amazon</a>. After it arrived, the setup was as easy as plugging the included cable into the TV and then the antenna. I turned on the TV and used auto search to find channels. Initially, it found only 6 channels and I got worried (it did not find PBS which was one of the main reasons for buying the antenna in the first place!). After a little more reading online, I learned that moving the antenna around might do the trick. After switching to Channel 13 (PBS) and seeing the usual snow and static, I moved the antenna around until I found the spot where Channel 13 came in perfectly-- it turned out that the antenna had optimal reception when it was near a window and higher up above the TV. I managed to set it up in this higher position and rescanned for channels. This time it found 68 HD channels including PBS, all the major network channels, and quite a few others (keep in mind that we're located in NYC and where you are may affect what channels the antenna will find). In short he MoHu Curve 30 was more than powerful enough for our needs.</div>

Next, we took advantage of <a href="http://www.cnet.com/news/sling-tv-offers-free-amazon-fire-tv-stick-roku-streaming-stick-half-price-boxes/" target="_blank">SlingTV's promotion to prepay for 3 months of SlingTV and get a Amazon FireStick for free (you can also choose a Roku stick or Fire TV box or Roku box)</a>. To get the promotion, go to <a href="https://www.sling.com/" target="_blank">SlingTV site</a> and scroll to the bottom to find the promotions. If you had already signed up SlingTV, you'll have to call them and ask them to give you the promotion-- that happened to me, but the process was relatively painless. They basically cancelled my existing subscription and resubscribed me with the promotion. You then receive an email with a promotion code that you enter when you go to order the FireStick or FireTV (presumably, ordering Roku works the same way). We wanted SlingTV because we wanted keep getting ESPN (an antenna alone won't give you ESPN). For $20/mth, SlingTV will also give you the following channels:</div>

1230. <li>AMC (just recently announced), ESPN, TNT, TBS, Food Network, HGTV, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, and others. Featuring SportsCenter, NBA on TNT, Chopped, Property Brothers, Adventure Time, and others.</li>

1233. We're not sure we'll keep SlingTV but it's worth it to try it out for 3 months and get a free FireStick.<br />

1235. So why did we get the FireStick? Well, the stick allows you to access services such as Hulu+, Netflix, AmazonPrime streaming, and SlingTV! Prior to actually getting the stick, we used our PS3 to access these services and I wasn't actually sure how it all worked on a stick so here's the description. You plug the stick into a usb port on your TV. After setting up access to our WiFi, the stick immediately recognized our Amazon account (since we ordered from Amazon, I assume that Amazon knew we had it). Next, we added apps such as Hulu+, Netflix, and SlingTV. We logged into each of these accounts and the service and was immediately connected. Here's a pretty good video about the FireStick:<br />

1245. <li>then, PBS will ask you to sign into your PBS account or create a new one (for those who balk at having to give extra information, I would point out that there's probably worse that you could do than to create an account on PBS).</li>

1247. In a nice surprise, we found that there was an arte app for the FireStick-- that alone made me glad that we choose FireStick! Arte may also be available for some other services, but after looking at all the services, we decided that FireStick fit our needs. </div>

1249. So far, it's been about a week and I love the set up. If we want to watch the PBS Newshour as it broadcasts, we just turn on the TV and use the antenna (as an aside, I love the ability to do that, just turn on the TV and see regular channels- to me the behavior is more like how I remember watching TV in the good old days...). If we missed a broadcast of something from PBS, we just switch to the FireStick, click on the PBS app and play whatever we missed. Navigating the FireStick is easy and all the other services work perfectly. So here's a breakdown:<br />

Notice that we still pay $70/mth for Internet service and yes, paying the additional $70/mth for TWC cable would get us a lot more channels, but the reality is that we just didn&#39;t watch that many channels.
