2. Sea-scapes and other watery impressions are a current theme in fabric design. Inspired in part by technological advances in digital printing - where full-scale paintings can be transferred to fabric - which in turn inspire designers to reference artists like Turner or Rothko, with a nostalgic nod to 60's tie dye. Here are a few that bring these painterly aquatic images right into the home...

 60. Its been a ridiculously long time since my last post.... but on a recent trip to the sunny isle, Sicily, in a church that took my breath away as I stepped inside from a dusty side street, I was amazed by the fluidity and textural quality of these stone curtains. The exuberant interior of the Chiesa di San Francesco in Mazzara del Vallo is typical of 17th Century Sicilian Baroque style and inspired me to blog again!
There are quite a few fabric prints using the magnolia flower - usually a bit chintzy and old fashioned though still pretty in some settings. But Marimekko get my vote every time with their wonderful Keisarinna print that captures the wild abandon of those huge magnolia blossoms perfectly.

 82. I like Easter. I like that it doesn't seem so over-wrought and over-hyped as Christmas. I like Easter egg hunts. I like that it is four whole days off and I even like that there is a sombre day and a happy day, with an ordinary day in between. I loved Easter hymns as a child for some reason and, as a crafty mother got very excited about Easter Bonnet Parades!

 83.

 84.

 85.

 86. Like Christmas, Easter is a time of rich symbolism - much of it dating back to pre-Christian festivals, but today overlaid with rampant commercialism. The main symbols are of eggs and bunnies. Eggs have always been a fertility symbol, and as the earth - in the Northern Hemisphere at least - springs back to life at this time of year, its not hard to understand why eggs were given as gifts - often coloured and decorated - and now, of course, made of chocolate. Rabbits - or strictly speaking, hares - seem to date back to16th Century Lutheran Germany with stories that depicted hares bringing baskets of coloured eggs to good children. Its not absolutely clear why, except that, as the winter recedes and rabbits start to breed (prolifically) they are another obvious symbol of re-birth and spring.

 87.

 88.

 89.

 90. Where there is a symbol, there is also a rich collection of fabric prints - and so, leaving aside the sickly sweet, here is my Easter selection:

 91.
142.

 143.

 144.

 145.

 146.

 147.

 148. I've just spent some time in Sicily - which I hope goes some way to explaining the time-lag on this blog. The weather was a little inclement for much of the time, but that didn't seem to detract from the sheer abundance of lush produce everywhere you look. No wonder they are famous for their cuisine! Cauliflowers, fennel, and artichokes filled the markets - whole stalls tumbling with outsize vegetables. You couldn't help but buy and buy and rush home to cook up a pasta with brocolli brodo, or a fennel salad, or artichoke hearts slavered in fresh olive oil.

 149.

 150.

 151.

 152. But for me, the best thing by far was the citrus fruit - lemon trees groaned with bright yellow fruit; then the 'cedro' - the outsize lemons where you eat the whole fruit: pith, peel and all, dripping with honey. And truckloads of oranges, parked up on the roadside. Sicily is famous for its blood oranges - slices of dark red deliciousness and a kind of metaphor for this beautiful island with its dark heart and history.

 153.
154.

 155. With the zing of citrus still fresh in my mind, today I'm channelling oranges!

 156.

 191.

 192. I've scoured the world (wide web) for some loud and proud and - yes - throbbing heart print fabrics in honour of the impending day of Saint Valentine. No sacharine sweet St Valentine's here - just large-scale and super colourful love-liness. Enjoy!

 201. This is another Corita Rose fabric, called Medieval Hearts in red, printed on cotton velvet.
202.
205. South African studio printers, Designkist specialise in digital prints with an African flavour - this one is called Shweshwe Hearts - 'shweshwe' refers to the indigo printed fabrics of traditional South African dress.
206.

 207.

 208.
209.

 210.

 211. I cannot resist this pretty print from Fancy Moon called Corazones Primavera by California-based designers de Leon Group - with lots of little Mexican devotional hearts dancing across the fabric.
212.

 213.

 214.

 215.

 216.
217.
218.

 219.

 220. Another large scale design of embroidered hearts in zingy colours on white cotton called (understandably) Sweet Heart by Harlequin. These folksy embroidered hearts are nearly 20 cm across with rich textured stitching that reminds me of eastern European embroideries.
221.
222.

 223.

 224. Umbrella Prints are based in Australia and call this Grand Hearts in Smokey Black, printed on an organic hemp and cotton basecloth. On a grand scale, these hearts intersect to form a curvy and bold honeycomb pattern. Here's another shot to give you a better idea:
225.
226.

 227.

 228.

 229.

 230.

 231. May your Valentine's Day be filled with love as strong, vibrant and passionate as all these fabrics.

 235.

 236. The first week of February is a hard time of year. Athough we've been slipping imperceptibly towards spring for sometime now, it hardly feels like it. The winds are cruel, the days dark and short, and the earth sodden. But on a rare bright day, it pays to take note of the striking shapes that bare branches cast against the sky, and the beauty of frosted landscapes:
237.
238.

 239.

 240.

 241.

 242.

 243.

 244.

 245.

 246.

 247.

 248.

 249. I've been looking at fabrics that evoke the stark beauty of winter in a bid to banish these seasonal blues:

 250.

 251.

 252.

 253.

 254.

 255. Boeme's painterly Betula Northern Light is a impressionistic panel of wintery birch trees.
256.

 257.

 258.

 259.

 260.

 261.

 262. This is a Flockhart print called Winter Flower in blue, evoking that harbinger of spring - the crocus.
263.

 264.
265.

 266.

 267.

 268. Here's another revival by Flockhart of the work of mid-century textile designer, Eileen Guthrie, called Zig Zag - in grey.

 269.
270.

 271.

 272.

 273. Lindsay Alker uses lino-blocks to create her designs which are then silk-screened onto heavy linen. This one is called Great Battle Wood in light grey.

 274.
275.

 276.

 277.

 278.

 279.

 280. Scandi textile designers generally work hard to banish the winter blues by using huge amounts of bright colour and summery subjects, but Marimekko's Lumimarya is a clean intepretation of nature in winter and is one of my favourite Marimekko prints.

 281.
282.

 283.

 284.

 285. This is another Marimekko print, called Heina, with monochrome bundles of grasses, printed on fine linen.

 286.

 287.

 288.

 289.

 290.

 291. Mark Alexander's ethereal printed linen, called Bonsai Moonshine, from the Artisan Prints collection is so subtle and beautiful.

 292.

 293.

 294.

 295. I feel better already!

 296.

 297.

 298.
299.
300.

 301.

 302.
303.
304.

 305.

 306.

 307.

 308.

 311.
312. Doesn't mean I don't believe in fun, though. Kid's just want to have fun - as well as grow up. With that in mind I've been looking recently for some 'grown-up' kid's fabric. Stuff you - and the kids - wouldn't mind hanging on to long after they've outgrown the tutu's and playmobil.
318.

 319.

 326.

 327.

 341. Apart from having a great name, Skinny Laminx is notable for being the outlet for South African based designer Heather Moore's exuberant prints. Love this one called Herds, based on rock art from caves in the Western Cape.

 342.

 355.
356.

 357.

 358.
359.

 360. Laura Slater makes striking abstract prints on natural linen, from her base in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

 361.
362.

 363.

 364.
365. I was really happy to see Gail Bryson's stand. She hand screen-prints bright blocks of solid colour onto linen which she makes up into cushions, tea-towels, zipped bags and more.
366.
367.

 368.

 369.
370. Thorody's intricately hatched designs printed on linen seem to me to pay homage to an abstract Arts and Craft aesthetic - they call it 'Rustic Modernism'.
371.
372.

 373.

 374.

 375.

 376.

 377.

 378.
379. I loved the quirky repeat patterns from Orwell and Goode - from a distance they seemed totally abstract and the badgers and foxes only became apparent on closer inspection.
380.
381.

 382.

 383.
384. Eva Soneike is of Nigerian descent and has drawn heavily from her West African heritage to design a brilliant range of colourful textiles - love the stylised palms above!
385.
386.

 387.

 388.
389. Katie Brown uses industrial inspired images from her native Northern Ireland juxtaposed with fine printing, high quality silk and linen and bright colours to stunning effect.
390.
391.

 392.

 393.

 394.

 395.

 396. A personal favourite - I loved these mediterranean-floor-tile-inspired prints from Akin & Suri.

 397.

 398. I have just the place to use some of them myself - of which more another time!

 399.

 400.

 401.

 402.

 403.
404.

 407.

 408. GINA TAKE A BOW would like to wish you all a very happy, prosperous and peaceful 2015, and to celebrate the new beginning, is offering three lucky winners a length of beautiful embroidered border from the Gina Take a Bow range. Two metres of Pixel Rose border to stitch across some cushions, or along the bottom of a blind, around the hem of a coat, or down the side of a bag - the possibilities are endless! I designed the climbing rose design using inspiration from a piece of Hungarian embroidery I found in my local vintage store and had it machine embroidered onto a wide woven ecru tape.

 424. On Thursday 15th January 2015, we'll draw out three lucky winners and, if one of them is you, 2 metres of a Pixel Rose border will soon be winging its way to you.

 427. THE WREATH

 428.

 429.

 430.

 431.

 432.

 433.

 434.

 435.

 436.
437.

 438. I loved making this one. I made it with the help of Albie, my 10 year old assistant for the afternoon. It was really simple, was something we could do together AND chat at the same time, it didn't take long AND used up lots of scraps (which is always satisfying).

 439.

 440.

 441.
442.

 443.

 444.

 445.

 446.

 447. You'll need a 30 cm florists wire wreath ring and some fabric scraps, cut into 15 cm x 3 cm strips.

 448.

 449. Then you just begin to tie them on - nothing fancy, a simple single knot tugged tightly is fine. It won't look promising to start with, but as you build up the volume, bunching the ties together as you go, it'll begin to take shape.

 450.

 451.

 452.

 453. I kept the colour palette simple with some white linen voile, some natural unbleached linen, some taupe ticking stripe and - for a bit of Christmas shimmer, some silvery satin. Finish it off with a hanging loop and bow. I used some Gina Take a Bow checkmate braid in natural with a covered linen button to hold it all together.

 454.

 455.

 456.

 457. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

 458.

 459.

 460.

 463. THE CUSHION

 464.

 465.

 466.

 467. We're nearly there! Soon time to sit back and enjoy the sentiments of the season, as described on the cushion below:

 468.

 469.

 470.

 471.

 472.

 473.

 474.

 475. I found this badge in a tiny shop on the backstreets of a small town in Sicily some years ago - I loved the incongruous combination of military symbolism with hippy ideals. And, for the same reason, it seemed a natural fit to choose to team it with Ian Mankin's Indigo denim to make up this welted cushion cover.

 476.

 477.

 478.

 479.

 480.

 481.

 482.

 483. May my peace cushion fill you with glad tidings and goodwill!

 490.

 491.

 492.

 493. Since 2015 is the year when the UK catches up with some of its neighbours in introducing a levy on the use of plastic bags, lets rejoice in the prospect of injecting some style into shopping with a sturdy cloth tote.

 494.

 495.

 498.

 499.

 500.

 501. With a pocket on the inside for your purse and phone, and a larger pocket on the outside, this is not my simplest make, but its worth the effort to make what would be a perfect gift this christmas.

 502.

 503. I have used an outdoor fabric - a tough cotton/poly mix that is stain and mould resisitant and water-repellent - perfect for a hardworking shopping bag.

 504.

 505.

Sweet little pyramid-shaped bags to leave by your pillow or hang in your wardrobe. Super simple and quick to make and lovely to receive as a gift. All you need is a strip of some lightweight fabric - in this case a beautiful ivory linen with a solid twill stripe - and some sweet lavender flowers, and a loop of twine for hanging.

 528. THE DRAUGHT EXCLUDER

 529.

 530.

 531.

 532. Once the shopping is done, the tree trimmed, the presents wrapped and the turkey basted, for most of us it is a required Christmas tradition to veg out in front of the TV... and for that, at least here in the Northern hemisphere, you need a decidedly toasty home. Now here is something that will work hard to provide that cosy ambience...just by flopping down at the foot of a draughty door, keeping the icy air outside at bay.

 533.

 534.

 535.

 538.

 539.

 540. You can make this draught excluder either as a gift or for your own home - its another easy make with instructions on the Makes tab above. I made this one out of some beautifully textured fabrics from Mark Alexander and Osborne and Little, trimmed with my Gina Take a Bow checked braid in black and natural.
541.
542. Not only is it stylish but it will buff up your eco-credentials - after all, green-ness is integral to the very idea of a draught excluder - but in addition, because I believe a draught excluder needs to be a) quite heavy so it stays put and b) eco-freindly, no flimsy polyester wadding goes anywhere near mine. Instead I recycle fabric and interlining scraps and even the odd old t-shirt, slicing everything into strips and stuffing them all tightly into the tube.
543.
544. Now, where's that TV Times?
545.

 572. THE APRON
573.
574. The hopeless romantic in me just loves Kate Forman's faded floral linens. So faded you can hardly see the pretty little birds holding aloft the garlands of roses on this delightful print. Christmas Make No 6 is still focussed on the kitchen - an apron to wear during preparation of all the culinary delights of the season.
575.
576.

 577.

 583.
584.

 585. I washed and dried the linen before I started, and cut the shape using another apron as a pattern, leaving enough space around all edges to turn in a narrow hem. Add a loop of ribbon at the top and 2 ties on either side, and a pocket in the middle.

 594. Let the cooking commence!

 596. THE COOKER ROLLER TOWEL
597.
598. I have to say I like this idea: no more flapping about with wet hands looking for a tea towel. This linen hand towel is buttoned into place on your oven door, never to slide off onto the floor, or be distractedly mis-placed around a busy kitchen.
599.
600.

 601.

 602.

 603.

 604.
605. I used a linen print from the wonderful and witty Thornback & Peel - sardine tins screenprinted into a rhythmic design that inspires culinary endeavour.
606.
607.

 608.

 609.
610.
611. Cut a strip of fabric the width of your oven handle. Finish the sides with a narrow machine-stitched hem. Add some popper tape at each end and popper in place (popper tape is surprisingly expensive - I happened to have a small strip leftover from another job - but you could just as easily use velcro or even buttons).
612.
613.

 614.

 615.
616. The perfect present for a keen cook!

 618. THE NAPKINS

 619.

 620.

 621.

 622. Now I happen to think this would make a very nice present - napkins are like pillowcases - a) you can't really have too many and b) they really don't all need to match. Well, maybe in the case of pillowcases, its nice to have 2 that go together, but a white tablecloth laid with lots of different coloured napkins would be totally cool!
623.
624.

 625.

 626. Here they are looking like a box of Christmas crackers
627.
628.

 629. As it happens I had a long strip of lovely blue green linen that was enough to cut 4 x 53cm square pieces that when hemmed all around made 4 generously sized 50 cm napkins. Linen is a perfect fabric - elegant when crumpled but, more importantly, uniquely absorbent so good for blotting and mopping. And its hardwearing so will withstand many many washes. Best to wash and dry the fabric before you start, in case of shrinkage - remembering that you may well want to wash them long and hot to get rid of all those red-wine and good food stains of the future.

 630.

 631.

 632.

 633.

 634.
635.

 636. The best place for 100% linen in a HUGE range of wonderful colours is The Cloth Shop in London's Portobello Road.

 637.

 638.

 639.

 640.

 641.
642. And to complete the look, I used a strip of fabric leftover from my tablecloth to make these easy napkin rings with the help of some stiffener and buttons, but tying them with some ribbon or even a length of string would be just as effective.

 654.

 655.

 656.

 657. Here's another easy make - whether as a gift or to grace your own table. Just measure your table, allow enough overhang on all sides, cut your fabric accordingly and make a narrow hem on all sides.

 658.

 659.

 660.

 661.

 662.

 663.

 664.

 665. Re: fabric - make sure it is washable, and to avoid shrinkage later, wash and dry the fabric before you start bearing in mind that a tablecloth gets stained and needs to be washed long and hard sometimes.

 666.

 667.

 668.

 669. My fabric is a lightweight cotton from Fancy Moon, printed with a joyous folkloric print that gladdens my heart whenever I look at it - it makes me think of gypsy caravans, narrow boats and all things folksy and summery. Its narrow though (112 cm) which is perfect for my kitchen table, but not going to work on a wide dining table - however, in that case I would make a table runner and use it to jazz up a plain tablecloth (even a paper one!)

 671. Here's a really quick and easy gift to make for someone this Christmas - a tea towel, all the better to dry up after the Christmas dinner is done! And, to make it really special, personalise it with some cross-stitch initials in one corner.

 672.

 673.

 674.

 675. I picked this narrow width linen up on holiday in France - but The Cloth House in Berwick Street in London does a very similar narrow width linen in stripes. You'll need about 0.75cm. Plus a snippet of tape to make a loop in one corner, and some embroidery thread for the initials.

 676.

 677.

 678.

 679. Its the thought that counts!

 699. As you may have noticed, the description above states that I will muse on textile pattern, colour and texture as well as techniques and tips. Well I reckon I've mused at length on the first three items in that list. From bees to tartan, deckchair stripes to herringbone, I've raided the treasure trove of furnishing fabrics to highlight the ones that I love, and told some of the stories that are woven into them along the way. But I haven't done much in the way of the two T's: techniques and tips.

 700.

 701.

 702.

 703. To right that wrong, and ring in the festive season (and just to make my life just a little more hectic than it is already!) I have decided to give myself a challenge: in the run up to Christmas I will post 12 easy peasy Makes - simple ideas of things you can make as gifts and treats for your friends and family.

 704.

 705.

 706.

 707. So, as its the first day of December, it seemed fitting that the Gina Take a Bow CHRISTMAS MAKE NO. 1 is an Advent Calendar that you can make to string across a mantelpiece: 24 little bags to fill with sweets or tiny presents, to unpin and empty each day in the eager countdown that is the magic of Christmas!

 708.

 709.

 710.

 711.

 712.

 713.

 714.

 716.

 717.

 718.

 719. For further instructions, go to the Makes tab at the top of the page.

 720.

 725. There is nothing I like more than a bright and crisp autumn day. However few and far between, they are oh so welcome among otherwise gloomy weather, and when a low slung sun casts lengthening shadows, it turns the air golden and sets colours aflame.

 726.

 732.

 733. I have been gathering some autumnal fabrics recently, and this week, on just such a day, I took my samples out to the local park to photograph them in that slanting golden light.

 783. As I've already mentioned, I spent sometime in Singapore this August. In Chinese culture, August is the month of the Hungry Ghost, when it is believed spirits of ones ancestors return to visit the living. Elaborate feasts are prepared and served to empty seats at the family table and offerings of food and joss are made at altars throughout the city. To me, it seemed an appropriate time of year to be re-visiting the place of my birth as I was there to attend an exhibition commemorating my father's work and I could feel his hungry ghost everywhere I went!

 784.

 785.

 786.

 787.

 788.

 789. A Hungry Ghost alter outside a Chinatown shopping centre in downtown Singapore.

 790.

 791.

 792.

 793. Now its October and the run up to Halloween - a festival I have never enjoyed. Call me killjoy, but I don't relish the doorstepping rituals of badly dressed children who I don't know, extorting favours from me that will only rot their teeth. And, on a wider note, I don't like the way it shrouds death in all that spooky scary nonsense of spiderwebs, witches and skeletons! Give me a clear-cut

 794.

 795. hungry ghost who'll sit down to a slap up meal at my dinner table and give me an excuse to remember times past any day of the year.

 796.

 797.

 798.

 799. So some bells went off in my head recently while reading about the Mexican Day of the Dead - or Dia de los Muertos - a festival that dates back 3000 years to the Aztecs, where they too believe that the dead come back home to visit and everyone celebrates with dancing, music, flowers and food. Sounds a lot like the Hungry Ghost festival if you ask me! And guess what? In earlier times the festival used to take up a whole month - the month of August - even more similarities with China! When the Spanish conquered Mexico, they tried to stamp out the Day of the Dead, and when that didn't work, they shifted the date so that it segued into the Christian Halloween and All Souls Day!

 800.

 801.

 802.

 803. All of this preamble is really just an excuse to showcase some astounding fabrics with Mexican Day of the Dead themes. They are designed and printed in California by Henry Alexander and are sold online over here by Fancy Moon.

 804.

 805.

 806.

 807.

 808.
809.

 810.

 811.
812.

 814.
815.

 816.

 817.

 818.

 819.

 820. A word of warning to all the makers out there : these fabrics are only 44" - or 112 cms wide so in most cases you need to allow for more fabric than normal, or use plain borders to extend the width of the fabric (and to be honest, with such busy designs on quite thin fabric, borders can be useful in another way - to add definition and lend support). Below is an image of a blind I made using Fancy Moon's Baile de Cavaleros - heavily lined and interlined, with a dark dark navy linen border to frame it - it hangs over a desk in a study and I'm sure its subject-matter improves the clarity and spirit of the work that takes place beneath it!

 821.

 822.

 823.
