Like Christmas, Easter is a time of rich symbolism - much of it dating back to pre-Christian festivals, but today overlaid with rampant commercialism.  The main symbols are of eggs and bunnies.  Eggs have always been a fertility symbol, and as the earth - in the Northern Hemisphere at least - springs back to life at this time of year, its not hard to understand why eggs were given as gifts - often coloured and decorated - and now, of course, made of chocolate.  Rabbits - or strictly speaking, hares - seem to date back to16th Century Lutheran Germany with stories that depicted hares bringing baskets of coloured eggs to good children. Its not absolutely clear why, except that, as the winter recedes and rabbits start to breed (prolifically) they are another obvious symbol of re-birth and spring.</div>

I've just spent some time in Sicily - which I hope goes some way to explaining the time-lag on this blog.  The weather was a little inclement for much of the time, but that didn't seem to detract from the sheer abundance of lush produce everywhere you look.  No wonder they are famous for their cuisine! Cauliflowers, fennel, and artichokes filled the markets - whole stalls tumbling with outsize vegetables. You couldn't help but buy and buy and rush home to cook up a pasta with brocolli brodo, or a fennel salad, or artichoke hearts slavered in fresh olive oil.  </div>

But for me, the best thing by far was the citrus fruit - lemon trees groaned with bright yellow fruit; then the 'cedro' - the outsize lemons where you eat the whole fruit: pith, peel and all, dripping with honey.  And truckloads of oranges, parked up on the roadside.  Sicily is famous for its blood oranges - slices of dark red deliciousness and a kind of metaphor for this beautiful island with its dark heart and history.</div>

447. You'll need a 30 cm florists wire wreath ring and some fabric scraps, cut into 15 cm x 3 cm strips.</div>

Not only is it stylish but it will buff up your eco-credentials - after all, green-ness is integral to the very idea of a draught excluder - but in addition, because I believe a draught excluder needs to be a) quite heavy so it stays put and b) eco-freindly, no flimsy polyester wadding goes anywhere near mine. As it happens I had a long strip of lovely blue green linen that was enough to cut 4 x 53cm square pieces that when hemmed all around made 4 generously sized 50 cm napkins.   Linen is a perfect fabric - elegant when crumpled but, more importantly, uniquely absorbent so good for blotting and mopping.  And its hardwearing so will withstand many many washes.  Best to wash and dry the fabric before you start, in case of shrinkage - remembering that you may well want to wash them long and hot to get rid of all those red-wine and good food stains of the future.   </div>

As I've already mentioned, I spent sometime in Singapore this August.  In Chinese culture, August is the month of the Hungry Ghost, when it is believed spirits of ones ancestors return to visit the living. So some bells went off in my head recently while reading about the Mexican Day of the Dead - or Dia de los Muertos - a festival that dates back 3000 years to the Aztecs, where they too believe that the dead come back home to visit and everyone celebrates with dancing, music, flowers and food.  Sounds a lot like the Hungry Ghost festival if you ask me!  And guess what? In earlier times the festival used to take up a whole month - the month of August - even more similarities with China! When the Spanish conquered Mexico, they tried to stamp out the Day of the Dead, and when that didn't work, they shifted the date so that it segued into the Christian Halloween and All Souls Day!  </div>

A word of warning to all the makers out there : these fabrics are only 44" - or 112 cms wide so in most cases you need to allow for more fabric than normal, or use plain borders to extend the width of the fabric (and to be honest, with such busy designs on quite thin fabric, borders can be useful in another way - to add definition and lend support).  Below is an image of a blind I made using Fancy Moon's Baile de Cavaleros - heavily lined and interlined, with a dark dark navy linen border to frame it - it hangs over a desk in a study and I'm sure its subject-matter improves the clarity and spirit of the work that takes place beneath it!</div>
