  45. <p>Netflix on Thursday reported that its subscriber growth slowed dramatically during the summer, a sign <span class="LinkEnhancement">the huge gains</span> from the video-streaming service’s crackdown on freeloading viewers is tapering off.</p>
  46. <p>The 5.1 million subscribers that Netflix added during the July-September period represented a 42% decline from the total gained during the same time last year. Even so, the company’s revenue and profit rose at a faster pace than analysts had projected, according to FactSet Research. </p>
  47. <p>Netflix ended September with 282.7 million worldwide subscribers – far more than any other streaming service. </p>
  48. <p>The Los Gatos, California, company earned $2.36 billion, or $5.40 per share, a 41% increase from the same time last year. Revenue climbed 15% from a year ago to $9.82 billion. Netflix management predicted the company’s revenue will rise at the same 15% year-over-year pace during the October-December period, slightly than better than analysts have been expecting.</p>
  49. <p>The strong financial performance in the past quarter coupled with the upbeat forecast eclipsed any worries about slowing subscriber growth. Netflix’s stock price surged nearly 4% in extended trading after the numbers came out, building upon a more than 40% increase in the company’s shares so far this year. </p>

  70. <p>“We had a plan to reaccelerate growth and we delivered on that plan,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said during a video call discussing the results.</p>
  71. <p>The past quarter’s subscriber gains were the lowest posted in any three-month period since the beginning of last year. That drop-off indicates Netflix is shifting to a new phase after reaping the benefits from <span class="LinkEnhancement">a ban</span> on the once-rampant practice of sharing account passwords that enabled an estimated 100 million people watch its popular service without paying for it.</p>
  72. <p>The crackdown, triggered by <span class="LinkEnhancement">a rare loss of subscribers</span> coming out of the pandemic in 2022, helped Netflix add 57 million subscribers from June 2022 through this June — an average of more than 7 million per quarter, while many of its industry rivals have been struggling as households curbed their discretionary spending.</p>
  73. <p>Netflix’s gains also were propelled by <span class="LinkEnhancement">a low-priced version</span> of its service that included commercials for the first time in its history. The company still is only getting a small fraction of its revenue from the 2-year-old advertising push, but Netflix is intensifying its focus on that segment of its business to help boost its profits.</p>
  74. <p>Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters predicted the company’s ad sales will double during the next year while remaining a just a sliver of total revenue that will continue to be propelled by subscription fees. </p>
  75. <p>“We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us,” Peters said in a video call with investors. But he predicted Netflix’s foray into ads would eventually prove to be as successful as its recent crackdown on password sharing was. </p>
  76. <p>Although he was impressed by most of Netflix’s report, Forrester Research analyst Mike Proulx called the slowdown in subscriber growth “concerning,” especially in the U.S., where the company is finding it increasingly difficult to attract more viewers.</p>
  77. <p>“That’s why accelerating growth via advertising becomes paramount to Netflix’s go-forward strategy,” Proulx said. </p>
  78. <p>As part of its evolution, Netflix has been increasingly supplementing its lineup of scripted TV series and movies with live programming, such as a Labor Day spectacle featuring renowned glutton Joey Chestnut setting a world record for gorging on hot dogs in a showdown with his longtime nemesis Takeru Kobayashi.</p>
  79. <p>Netflix will be trying to attract more viewer during the current quarter <span class="LinkEnhancement">with a Nov. 15 fight</span> pitting former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson against Jake Paul, a YouTube sensation turned boxer, and <span class="LinkEnhancement">two National Football League games</span> on Christmas Day. </p>

  116. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">“I’m the owner of my baby,” she says defiantly.</p>
  117. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">She’s sitting next to her husband, Ike, in the office of a Nigerian state official who spends the best part of an hour interrogating the couple.</p>
  118. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">As the commissioner for women affairs and social welfare in Anambra state, Ify Obinabo has plenty of experience in resolving family disputes &#8211; but this is no ordinary disagreement.</p>
  119. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Five members of Ike’s family, who are also present in the room, do not believe Hope is the couple’s biological child, as Chioma and Ike claim.</p>
  120. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Chioma claims to have “carried” the child for about 15 months. The commissioner and Ike’s family are in disbelief at the absurdity of the claim. </p>
  121. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Chioma says she faced pressure from Ike’s family to conceive. They even asked him to marry another woman.</p>
  122. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">In her desperation, she visited a “clinic” offering an unconventional “treatment” &#8211; an outlandish and disturbing scam preying on women desperate to become mothers that involves the trafficking of babies.</p>
  123. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">The BBC was allowed by authorities to sit in on the commissioner&#8217;s discussion with Chioma as part of our investigation into the cryptic pregnancy scam. </p>

  133. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Nigeria has one of the highest birth rates in the world, with women often facing social pressure to conceive and even ostracisation or abuse if they cannot.</p>
  134. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Under this pressure, some women go to extremes to realise their dream of motherhood.</p>
  135. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">For over a year, BBC Africa Eye has been investigating the “cryptic pregnancy” scam.</p>
  136. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Scammers posing as doctors or nurses convince women that they have a “miracle fertility treatment” guaranteed to get them pregnant. The initial “treatment” usually costs hundreds of dollars and consists of an injection, a drink, or a substance inserted into the vagina.</p>
  137. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">None of the women or officials we spoke to during our investigation know for sure what is in these drugs. But some women have told us they led to changes in their bodies &#8211; such as swollen stomachs &#8211; which further convinced them they were pregnant.</p>
  138. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Women given the “treatment” are warned not to visit any conventional doctors or hospitals, as no scan or pregnancy test would detect “the baby”, which the scammers claim is growing outside the womb.</p>
  139. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">When it’s time to “deliver” the baby, women are told labour will only begin once they are induced with a “rare and expensive drug”, requiring further payment.</p>
  140. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Accounts of how the “delivery” happens vary, but all are disturbing. Some are sedated only to wake up with a Caesarean-like incision mark. Others say they are given an injection that causes a drowsy, hallucinatory state in which they believe they’re giving birth.</p>
  141. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Either way, the women end up with babies they are supposed to have given birth to.</p>
  142. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Chioma tells commissioner Obinabo that when her time to “deliver” came, the so-called doctor injected her in the waist and told her to push. She does not spell out how she ended up with Hope, but says the delivery was “painful”.</p>

  151. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Our team manages to infiltrate one of these secretive “clinics” &#8211; connecting with a woman known as “Dr Ruth” to her clients &#8211;  by posing as a couple who have been trying to conceive for eight years.</p>
  152. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">This so-called &#8220;Dr Ruth&#8221; runs her clinic every second Saturday of the month in a dilapidated hotel in the town of Ihiala, in the south-eastern Anambra state. Outside her room, dozens of women wait for her in the hotel corridors, some with visibly protruding stomachs.</p>
  153. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">The whole atmosphere is buzzing with positivity. At one point, huge celebrations erupt inside the room after a woman is told she is pregnant.</p>
  154. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">When it’s our undercover reporters’ turn to see her, &#8220;Dr Ruth&#8221; tells them the treatment is guaranteed to work.</p>
  155. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">She offers the woman an injection, claiming it will enable the couple to “select” the sex of their future baby &#8211; a medical impossibility.</p>
  156. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">After they turn down the injection, &#8220;Dr Ruth&#8221; hands them a sachet of crushed pills as well as some more pills for them to take at home, along with instructions on when to have intercourse.</p>
  157. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">This initial treatment costs 350,000 naira ($205; £165).</p>
  158. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Our undercover reporter neither takes the drugs nor follows any of &#8220;Dr Ruth’s&#8221; instructions and returns to see her four weeks later.</p>
  159. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">After running a device that looks like an ultrasound scanner across our reporter’s stomach, a sound like a heartbeat is heard and &#8220;Dr Ruth&#8221; congratulates her on being pregnant.</p>

  161. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">After delivering the good news, &#8220;Dr Ruth&#8221; explains how they’ll need to pay for a “scarce” and expensive drug needed for the baby to be born, costing somewhere between 1.5 and two million naira ($1,180; £945).</p>
  162. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Without this drug, the pregnancy could extend beyond nine months, &#8220;Dr Ruth&#8221; claims with disregard for scientific fact, adding:  “The baby will become malnourished &#8211; we’d need to build it up again.”</p>

  173. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">But clues as to why they would be susceptible to such brazen lies can, in part, be found in online groups where disinformation around pregnancy is widespread.</p>

  179. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Cryptic pregnancy is a recognised medical phenomenon, in which a woman is unaware of her pregnancy until the late stages.</p>
  180. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">But during our investigation, the BBC found widespread misinformation in Facebook groups and pages about this type of pregnancy.</p>
  181. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">One woman from the US, who dedicates her entire page to her “cryptic pregnancy&#8221;, claims to have been pregnant “for years” and that her journey cannot be explained by science.</p>
  182. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">In closed groups on Facebook, many posts use religious terminology to hail the bogus “treatment” as a “miracle” for those who’ve been unable to conceive.</p>
  183. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">All of this misinformation helps solidify women’s belief in the scam.</p>
  184. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Members of these groups are not only from Nigeria, but also from South Africa, the Caribbean, and the US.</p>
  185. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">The scammers also sometimes manage, and post in, these groups, enabling them to reach out to women expressing an interest in the &#8220;treatment&#8221;.</p>

  192. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Authorities tell us that to complete the “treatment”, the scammers need new-born babies and to do that they seek out women who are desperate and vulnerable, many of them young and pregnant, in a country where abortion is illegal.</p>
  193. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">In February 2024, the Anambra state health ministry raided the facility where Chioma “delivered” Hope.</p>
  194. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">The BBC obtained footage of the raid, which showed a huge complex made up of two buildings.</p>
  195. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">In one were rooms containing medical equipment &#8211; apparently for clients &#8211; while in the other were several pregnant women being kept against their will. Some were as young as 17.</p>
  196. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Some tell us they were tricked into going there, unaware their babies would be sold to the scammer’s clients.</p>
  197. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Others, like Uju, which is not her real name, felt too scared to tell their family they were pregnant and sought a way out. She said she was offered 800,000 naira ($470; £380) for the baby.</p>
  198. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Asked if she regrets her decision to sell her baby, she says: “I’m still confused.”</p>
  199. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Commissioner Obinabo, who has been part of efforts in her state to crack down on the scam, says scammers prey on vulnerable women like Uju to source the babies.</p>

  209. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">But Chioma pleads her case, and the commissioner eventually accepts her explanation that she is a victim herself and that she hadn’t realised what was going on. </p>
  210. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">On this basis she allows Chioma and Ike to keep the baby &#8211; unless the biological parents come forward to claim him.</p>
  211. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">But unless attitudes towards women, infertility, reproductive rights and adoption change, scams like this will continue to thrive, experts warn.</p>

  272. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Hezbollah has confirmed the cleric tipped to become the group&#8217;s next leader was killed in an Israeli air strike nearly three weeks ago. </p>
  273. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">The Israeli military said on Tuesday night that it killed Hashem Safieddine in a strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut.</p>
  274. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">On Wednesday, Hezbollah put out a statement saying it was mourning “a great leader and a great martyr” who lived an “honourable life”.</p>
  275. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Safieddine was head of the group&#8217;s executive council and was a cousin of its late secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli air strike on the Lebanese capital on 27 September.</p>

  277. <div data-component="text-block" class="sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ">
  278. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Following Nasrallah’s death, Saffiedine had taken a leadership role within Hezbollah, and was expected to be formally elected as its next secretary general, although no official announcement had yet been made.</p>
  279. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Israel carried out a series of air strikes near Beirut&#8217;s airport on 4 October, after which Hezbollah officials said they had lost contact with Safieddine. US media cited Israeli officials as saying the cleric had been the target of the bombing.</p>
  280. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">On Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a statement saying Safieddine was killed along with Ali Hussein Hazima, who it described as commander of Hezbollah’s Intelligence Headquarters.</p>
  281. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">It accused Safieddine of directing &#8220;terrorist attacks against the State of Israel&#8221; for years, as well as taking part in Hezbollah&#8217;s &#8220;central decision-making processes&#8221;.</p>
  282. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Hezbollah is a military, political and social organisation that wields considerable power in Lebanon. It is designated as a terrorist organisation by Israel as well as the US, the UK and other countries.</p>
  283. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Safieddine himself was designated a &#8220;global terrorist&#8221; by the US and Saudi Arabia in 2017.</p>
  284. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">He undertook religious studies in Iran and his son was married to a daughter of Gen Qasem Soleimani, the powerful Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander who was killed in a 2020 US air strike in Iraq.</p>
  285. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Safieddine was believed to have been aged about 60 at the time of his death.</p>
  286. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">In a speech given in Beirut this summer, Safieddine described how Hezbollah viewed its leadership succession.</p>
  287. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">&#8220;In our resistance, when any leader is martyred, another takes up the flag and goes on with new, certain, strong determination,&#8221; he was quoted as saying by AFP news agency.</p>
  288. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Israel went on the offensive against Hezbollah after almost a year of cross-border hostilities sparked by the war in Gaza, saying it wanted to ensure the safe return of residents of border areas displaced by Hezbollah rocket, missile and drone attacks.</p>
  289. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Over the past year, at least 2,500 Lebanese people have been killed and nearly 12,000 injured, according to Lebanon&#8217;s health ministry.</p>
  290. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Hezbollah has attacked Israel with thousands of rockets and drones over the same period, and at least 59 people have been killed in northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights, Reuters news agency reports.</p>

Dare Ogunbowale had a 5-yard run to set up Fairbairn’s game winner.</p>

The Cowboys (3-2) won their second straight after Prescott overcame a mistake-filled night to lead a 70-yard drive that ended with Prescott finding a lunging Tolbert just across the goal line on fourth down. Prescott threw for 352 yards to go with two touchdowns, two interceptions and a fumble. Pittsburgh lost their second straight on a night they mustered just 226 yards of total offense to drop to 3-2. The start was delayed nearly 90 minutes due to severe weather, with the game ending at 12.59am in Pittsburgh.</p>

The Bears won their second straight after dropping two in a row, with the two key pieces they acquired as a result of a blockbuster trade with Carolina in 2023 leading the way. Chicago also got a big performance from D’Andre Swift. He had 120 yards from scrimmage and a TD. Williams picked apart a banged-up defense that ranks among the NFL’s worst. The No 1 overall draft pick completed 20 of 29 passes with no interceptions and a 126.2 rating that was his best.</p>

Murray threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Higgins early in the fourth quarter that cut the deficit to 23-21 and then set up Chad Ryland’s 35-yard field goal with 1:37 to play. Brock Purdy then threw an interception to seal it. This marked the second time this season that San Francisco (2-3) blew a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter to a division rival, having done it in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams.</p>

  510. <p>WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans stepped up their purchases at retailers last month as low unemployment, steady pay gains and <span class="LinkEnhancement">rising stock</span> and home values helped sustain their willingness to spend despite higher prices. </p>
  511. <p>Retail sales rose 0.4% from August to September, the <span class="LinkEnhancement">Commerce Department said</span> Thursday, up from 0.1% the previous month and the third straight increase. Online retailers, restaurants, and grocery stores all reported higher sales.</p>
  512. <p>Sales at gas stations fell, because of lower pump prices. The retail sales figures aren’t adjusted for inflation, and the prices of goods fell slightly last month.</p>
  513. <p>With the presidential election in its final weeks, Thursday’s figures provided the latest sign that household spending is fueling a steady economic expansion even while <span class="LinkEnhancement">inflation has cooled</span>. In his campaign for the White House, Donald Trump has insisted that <span class="LinkEnhancement">sweeping new tariffs</span> on all imports and lower corporate taxes are needed to deliver healthy growth. Vice President Kamala Harris has countered with proposals for expanding tax credits for families with children and subsidizing home construction to try to lower housing costs.</p>

  553. <p>Restaurant sales jumped 1% from August to September, a sign that many Americans remain confident enough in their finances to boost their discretionary spending. Rising sales at sporting goods outlets point in the same direction.</p>
  554. <p>Clothing store purchases leapt 1.5% last month, though sales at electronics and furniture stores dropped. </p>
  555. <p>Last week, the government reported that consumer <span class="LinkEnhancement">prices rose just 2.4%</span> in September from a year earlier, down from a peak inflation rate of 9.1% in June 2022 and barely above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. With prices coming under control, the Fed cut its benchmark interest rate last month for the first time in four years by a <span class="LinkEnhancement">larger-than-usual half-point</span>. By year’s end, economists expect two additional Fed rate cuts, of smaller quarter-point increments, which should help ease borrowing costs over time. </p>
  556. <p>Yet the healthy pace of retail sales could strengthen the hand of Fed officials who have expressed <span class="LinkEnhancement">a more cautious approach</span> to rate cuts. Last month’s half-point rate cut had coincided with worries that the job market might be rapidly weakening. But then the jobs report for September showed that hiring <span class="LinkEnhancement">picked up</span> last month, and the unemployment rate fell to a low 4.1%. </p>
  557. <p>Many analysts say they think cooler inflation and lower borrowing rates will help support the economy in the coming months. Last quarter, the economy grew at <span class="LinkEnhancement">a solid 3% annual rate</span>.</p>
  558. <p>Still, research by the Fed has found that it’s mostly upper- and middle-income Americans who are driving the increased retail spending by consumers. Many lower-income households, by contrast, have struggled to keep up with sharply higher prices and interest rates, and have increased their spending by much less. </p>
  559. <p>The lagging outcome for lower-income consumers marks a shift from before the pandemic, according to a research note by Sinem Hacioglu Hoke, a Fed economist, and two colleagues. Before the pandemic, they found, retail spending rose for all income groups at roughly the same pace. But about three years ago, upper- and middle-income consumers started to spend at much faster pace than lower-earning consumers.</p>
  560. <p>By August 2024, spending on retail goods was nearly 17% higher than it was in January 2018 for upper-income households, defined as those making more than $100,000. For middle-income households — those earning $60,000 to $100,000 — their spending rose 13.3% during the same period. And for those earning less than $60,000, spending has risen just 7.9% since 2018, and it actually fell from mid-2021 through mid-2023. </p>
  561. <p>Thursday’s retail sales report arrives amid expectations for a solid holiday shopping season, though perhaps not as robust as last year’s, with many shoppers under pressure from higher prices despite the easing of inflation. The National Retail Federation has <span class="LinkEnhancement">predicted that shoppers will increase their spending</span> in November and December by between 2.5% and 3.5% over the same period a year ago. During the 2023 holiday shopping season, spending had surged by a stronger 3.9% from 2022.</p>
  562. <p>To try to pull in shoppers, many retailers, from the holiday décor online retailer Balsam Hill to the crafts retailer Michaels, are displaying holiday merchandise and marketing earlier than they did a year ago. For the first time, Balsam Hill transformed what is traditionally its fall catalog, sent in September, into a holiday book.</p>
  563. <p>The company’s chief executive, Mac Harman, said its sales of holiday decor spiked in mid-September, a month earlier than it had a year ago. Harman said he also noticed that Halloween decor sold briskly in September, also a month earlier than in 2023.</p>
  564. <p>Michaels, based in Irving, Texas, said it was setting up its holiday decor shop called Sprinkle Shop now, nearly a month earlier. It is also displaying its do-it-yourself offerings three weeks earlier than usual because some of its customers appear to want to save money by making their own gifts.</p>

  621. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">A Peruvian priest who founded liberation theology, a movement advocating an active role for the Roman Catholic Church in fighting poverty and injustice but reviled by some as Marxist, has died.</p>
  622. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Father Gustavo Gutiérrez was 96 when he passed away on Tuesday in his hometown of Lima.</p>
  623. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">A theologian who later became a Dominican friar, he revolutionised Church teachings with his 1971 book Theology of Liberation. </p>
  624. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">His progressive theories were embraced by many in his native Latin America but were also met with opposition and even disdain from more conservative voices within the Church. </p>

  627. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">He drew criticism from no other than Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who later became Pope Benedict. </p>
  628. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">The cardinal feared that liberation theology&#8217;s &#8220;Marxist ideas&#8221; would foster rebellion and division, even labelling it as a &#8220;fundamental threat to the faith of the Church&#8221;.</p>
  629. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Relations between the Vatican and Father Gutiérrez thawed somewhat after his fellow Latin American, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, became Pope. </p>
  630. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Father Gutiérrez praised Pope Francis for speaking about &#8220;a poor Church for the poor&#8221; and in 2018, Pope Francis sent Father Gutiérrez a letter for his 90th birthday thanking him &#8220;for what you have contributed for the Church and humanity through your theological service and your preferential love for the poor and the discarded of society&#8221;.</p>

  638. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Before becoming a priest, Gustavo Gutiérrez had studied medicine and literature in Peru, philosophy and psychology in Belgium, and theology in France.</p>
  639. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">During his time in Europe, he read the works of German philosopher Karl Marx.</p>
  640. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">His detractors often said his emphasis on helping the poor was Marxist and decried him as a communist.</p>
  641. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Liberation theology became particularly controversial when priests who followed a radical strand of liberation theology joined revolutionary movements such as the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, who overthrew the dictatorial government of the Somoza family.</p>
  642. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">But Father Gutiérrez maintained that his teachings were far from revolutionary but rather squarely rooted in the Bible.</p>
  643. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">He said that upon his return from Europe to Peru, he had found that the Church was often &#8220;answering questions that weren&#8217;t being asked&#8221;, implying that the Church hierarchy had become too far removed from the troubles of its parishioners, especially in deprived and poor areas. </p>
  644. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">He argued that the clergy had a lot to learn from the faithful in the poorest parishes  who, he said, demonstrated day after day how hope could spring amidst suffering. </p>
  645. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">In his book The hermeneutic of hope, he recalled how he had fought against a view prevalent among many faithful at the time that &#8220;we are born to suffer&#8221;.</p>
  646. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">&#8220;No one is born to suffer, but to be happy,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;Poverty is a human construction; <i id="we" class="sc-7dcfb11b-0 kKcaog">we </i>have made these conditions.&#8221;</p>
  647. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Described by his parishioners as a &#8220;humble man with a great capacity to make friends&#8221;, he combined his work as a theologian and lecturer at top universities with his work as a priest, officiating at weddings and holding retreats.</p>
  648. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Félix Grández, a Peruvian sociologist who first met Father Gutiérrez at a spiritual retreat in 1978, said the priest radiated &#8220;a happiness which stemmed from doing good, from his dedication to the poor&#8221;.</p>
  649. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">Mr Grández told the BBC that one of the priest&#8217;s gifts was to distil theology into clear messages which appealed to the young, something he said he saw Father Gutiérrez do when he officiated at Mr Grández&#8217;s own wedding and again at that of his daughter. </p>
  650. <p class="sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe">&#8220;He was well known as a theologian but the way he connected with people was through talking about chess, traditional music, cinema, and his support for Alianza Lima football club.&#8221;</p>

  750. <p class="dcr-180skgt">Ralph Beckett had a straightforward answer when asked before Sunday’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe why he had advised the owners of Bluestocking to put up a €120,000 (£100,000) supplementary fee to get her into the race. “I couldn’t find a reason not to,” Beckett said, and the gamble paid off many times in Europe’s most valuable race as the four-year-old filly came home a length-and-a-quarter in front of Aventure, under a ride from Rossa Ryan that was Plan A for Longchamp from the first stride to the last.</p>
  751. <p class="dcr-180skgt">Longchamp is an unusual track, as much an extended loop as a circuit, and the key to riding it – which is easier said than done – is to save ground wherever possible around the sweeping turns. Ryan was fortunate to be leaving stall three, close to the rail, but all that followed was the result of his ruthlessness in exploiting his draw to the full.</p>

  766. <p class="dcr-180skgt">This looked like an exceptionally open renewal of the Arc beforehand, with most of the field separated by about 6lb on ratings, but only a handful of the 16 runners got seriously involved.</p>
  767. <p class="dcr-180skgt">Ryan Moore took charge on the lead from an early stage, setting a solid pace on Los Angeles, the Irish Derby winner, with Ryan and Bluestocking close behind, and once the winner had been sent for home about a quarter of a mile out, only Aventure, the runner-up behind Bluestocking in last month’s Prix Vermeille, was able to mount a serious challenge.</p>
  768. <p class="dcr-180skgt">The one-two from the Vermeille was repeated at the line, with Los Angeles underlining the excellence of Moore’s pace judgment by staying on for third. André Fabre’s Sosie, who was sent off favourite on the local Tote at around 3-1, was fourth.</p>
  769. <p class="dcr-180skgt">Bluestocking’s success in Sunday’s 103rd running of the Arc was a record seventh win for the famous pink, green and white colours of the Juddmonte bloodstock operation, 39 years after Rainbow Quest and Pat Eddery gave Juddmonte’s founder, the late Prince Khalid Abdullah, his first victory. It was also a first Arc win for both Beckett, second last year with Westover, and Ryan.</p>

  863. <p>The average rate on a 30-year mortgage in the U.S. rose for the third week in a row, reaching its highest level in eight weeks.</p>
  864. <p>The rate rose to 6.44% from 6.32% last week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday. A year ago, the rate averaged 7.63%.</p>
  865. <p>The last time the average rate was higher was on August 22, when it was 6.46%.</p>
  866. <p>Mortgage rates are influenced by several factors, including how the bond market reacts to the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy decisions. That can move the trajectory of the 10-year Treasury yield, which lenders use as a guide to pricing home loans. The yield on the 10-year Treasury was 4.09% Thursday, up from 3.62% in mid-September, just days before the Fed <span class="LinkEnhancement">slashed its benchmark lending rate</span> by a half a point.</p>
  867. <p>The average rate on a 30-year mortgage has been rising since reaching <span class="LinkEnhancement">its lowest level in two years</span> — 6.08% — three weeks ago. The rate remains well below the 7.22% it hit in May, its 2024 peak. </p>
  868. <p>Mortgage rates have been climbing in recent weeks following a spate of encouraging reports on the U.S. economy, including a hotter-than-expected September jobs report and a snapshot of consumer prices.</p>

  907. <p>“While we expect the long-run trend in mortgage rates to be downward, recent weeks have brought volatility,” said Ralph Mclaughlin, senior economist at Realtor.com.</p>
  908. <p>Generally, higher rates reflect the strength in the economy, which helps support the housing market. But as mortgage rates rise they can also add hundreds of dollars a month in costs for borrowers, reducing home shoppers’ purchasing power as they navigate a housing market with prices near all-time highs. </p>
  909. <p>Rising rates can also discourage homeowners who locked in a lower rate on their existing mortgage to list their home for sale if it means taking on a loan on a new home at a far higher rate.</p>
  910. <p>The housing market has been in a sales slump since 2022 as elevated mortgage rates put off many would-be homebuyers. <span class="LinkEnhancement">Sales of previously occupied U.S. homes fell in August</span> even as mortgage rates began easing.</p>
  911. <p>The recent uptick in mortgage rates may already be discouraging some would-be home shoppers. Mortgage applications fell 17% last week from the prior week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.</p>
  912. <p>Applications for loans to refinance a mortgage fell 26%, though they were still more than double what they were a year ago, when rates were higher.</p>
  913. <p>Borrowing costs on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages, popular with homeowners seeking to refinance their home loan to a lower rate, also increased this week. The average rate rose to 5.63% from 5.41% last week. A year ago, it averaged 6.92%, Freddie Mac said.</p>
  914. <p>Economists generally expect mortgage rates to remain near their current levels, at least this year. Fannie Mae projects the rate on a 30-year mortgage will average 6.2% in the October-December quarter and decline to an average of 5.7% in the same quarter next year.</p>
