So, skincare, amirite?
Over on his <a href="https://youtube.com/@BlowoutProfessor?si=VhAIcY4E89Tk63IE" target ="_blank">YouTube channel</a>, Chris, The Blowout Professor has some of the best haircare advice I've come across, and, by following it, my hair is finally adding length instead of the split ends that it's been throwing in with abandon for the last couple of decades.
But what, you might ask, does haircare have to do with skincare?
I mean, besides them both being about maintaining organic parts of our bodies in a healthy manner, all while coaxing them to make us look hawt, and stuff?
So, Chris was talking once about why you should avoid washing your hair everyday, and four to six days between washes might be a good ballpark to play in. That's all well and good and it made a huge difference for me. The only thing I've ever heard him say that didn't work out so great for me was when he compared that time without washes for hair to skin.
For a while now, I've been thinking about this, ever since someone with much more sensitive skin issues than I have convinced me I didn't need to shower every day – a tough sell back when I was working in the landscaping field (literally, hah!) that this blog originally hosted, and showered every morning before work because of a lifetime of social conditioning and then a second shower because of a day of sweaty dirty playing in soil and other fun things like that, let me tell you!
Funny enough, while limiting showers, a couple of skin oddities (like a hickey-looking rough patch on my neck that had persisted for a few years) suddenly took care of themselves when I switched to showering every other day.
Unfortunately, facial skincare seems to get squirrelly when you don't wash it morning and night. The price to pay for that is... or can become... pricey. 
Because counter to all intuitive thinking about it, splashing water on your skin (or, as Chris points out, the hair) doesn't hydrate it... for long.
You get it wet, and wet – water – hydro – hydration and then… it dries. And that water from the shower leads to everything drying out more than it would have otherwise, instead of leaving it hydrated.
And, as with hair, skin wants and needs to be hydrated.
And for hair or skin, the biggest part of -care for them is making sure they get that hydration and, unlike what really happens during glorious bath or shower relaxation time, they maintain it… throughout the day and overnight.
While hydration will be a primary focus for almost all of the steps and products we will eventually discuss, there are other issues that we will need to address.
Brightening is another primary focus for those of us with lighter flesh tones – not the make-me-whiter thing (because ewww in so many sus ways!) that “brightening” implies, but a more accurate description that doesn't show as much bias as the industry term would be blemish hiding.
For me, that means wrestling with a couple of dark spots here and there on my face (and to a lesser extent, the ever-increasing-freckle-like age spots on my arms) and, of course, a bit under each eye (unfortunately!)
Wrinkle control or anti-aging or skin smoothing or any other of a bunch of subtle variations is another focus of skincare.
Wrinkles show up around the eyes – smile lines, so if you're happy you… stay younger but look older? The forehead gets involved too, where worry lines like to show up. So don't worry, don't be happy… but don't be sad, because then frown lines show up and…

Yeah, there's skincare products to swipe on and deal with that, too!
There are also other products targeted to other issues. Skin plumping is partially a matter of being well-hydrated, but there's also stuff that makes your lips look bee stung or your just gives you a more youthful look throughout the skin. Then there's the matter of dry vs. oily skin, and you get more products… and there's more beyond all that.
Big disclaimer: I'm not a makeup artist or skincare technician or a dermatologist or anything like that. I've got exactly one canvas to work with and one set of issues that has changed over the handful of decades I've had to look at that canvas in the mirror and try to figure out what to do with it.
What I do have on my side is my neurodiverse braims always liking it when I line toys up in rows or sort M&Ms by color before eating them… or turning my daily skincare stuff into pretty set and solid routines, with certain steps in certain orders, and the constant adjustment to optimize the performance of each step and fix issues that come up after being baffled and frustrated by them and then figuring out what happened like six months later and making a simple tweak and…
So, yeah.
I focus intently on details, and I highly habitualize assembly-line processes and on collecting products and learning what they do and so on.
I can tell you what products I like and use, but keep in mind they're what I've found works for me. They may or may not be a good fit for you. But the principles of what type of products I use when and how to build a routine around it – that's what you can definitely work into your own routines.
Just swap products in and out as needed to address the particular needs and budget that you have!
I do recommend the use of something like Allure's Beauty Box subscription, which I did for a year or so, to find and try a dizzying array of products and figure out what works and doesn't work. Get samples from Sephora and Ulta and other places.
But like any good scientist, change one variable at a time.
For instance, I had a huge pilling problem that cropped up a few different times, and always with a different mix of products. I'd throw my hands up and blame this moisturizer or that serum or a sunscreen.
It wasn't until a friend suggested that the pilling of foundation (or sometimes before!) happened when mixing alcohol-based products with water-based ones, that I… did the same thing again, and blamed this product or that.
Then, it was as I was using a beauty sponge to get the foundation to do its thing that I realized… the problem I was having was from the step of soaking the sponge and wringing it out and… yeah, still patting water on to my face inadvertently, and boom! pilling! washing my face and repeating everything! running late for work! lions! tigers! bears! oh my!
So I use a brush to feather out the foundation now, and I get it looking the way I want, and I do not use the uber popular sponges that everyone else seems to love, and I haven't had pilling problems since.
Although I continue to eye one of my moisturizers – kept on the back of the shelf in my cupboard instead of in use – with extreme suspicion!

Now I just need to write some actual content!
So... since it's beginnings as a landscaping company blog, followed by a segue into poetry and art along with some posts and articles covering various subjects including ecological landscaping that bridged the gap... all from a small handful of people, and never the community I wanted to grow it into...
I find myself writing less poetry in general, and less of everything outside of my day to day work... which doesn't (usually) end up here.
However, I do have something I want to share multiple places, and a central location (i.e. here!) makes sense.
So with that, coming soon, a new series on something I've developed so I could better wrangle a bunch of skincare and beauty products onto my own face! The introduction post proper is still to come, but I just wanted to start with this little teaser.
And who knows? Maybe that will get some other writing flowing again, and that will hopefully include other content here... including more poetry!

in mid-Summer wrath
the mists of Autumn, caressing the decay of blanketing leaves 
on forest floor
forming gleaming crystalline structures 
encasing all in the dangerous beauty of freezing Winter storms
but as i warm 
ageing bones 
beyond maiden - mother 
approaching crone
i feel the coming 
of the storm
in every faerie tale 
there is a price 
paid
in pain 
i see earth glisten, 
soften
i feel the roots 
growing, 
reaching
new life 
rising
i have always

Lots of companies like to talk about it... to their customers, to their employees. It's a Thing To Do.
They want innovation, because they want something new, something no one else has, something no one else is selling... something, however, that will not want for buyers; they want something that will sell, that will make them a ton of money... that will increase their profit share for investors -- bottom line.
They will talk about caring about other things: the product, the customers, the employees; just as they walk about caring about innovation.
These days it's one of those key words to throw about.
Innovation, innovation... 
Such a good thing to talk about! To say you want.
Innovation isn't a Thing To Do.
Not really.
It's a Thing That Happens. It happens when you foster creativity, when you go so far as to allow for innovation.
Allowing for innovation is much different than talking about innovation.
Talking about innovation looks good on paper, attracts investors with gobs of cash who want high returns for an innovation, then they're on to the next thing that gets them more bucks for their buck. Talking about innovation is nice, neat, clean, powerful.
Innovating...
Innovating is messy, nasty, crazy, weird, strange... it takes time and money and it doesn't look like it's going to give you those sweet returns on your investment...
Right up until it actually does.
And then it, how do they say it in the clickbaity newsish vernacular, it completely destroys the competition, the rest of the industry, whatever...
Because it involved real innovation.
Fostering innovation can seem counterproductive, but it can work. Talking about innovation seems productive, but it does absolutely nothing.
Remember that, the next time some music sounds strange to your ears; some art looks... well, you just don't get it; an employee you're asking to be innovative doesn't toe the line the way you want, exactly...
You never know... they might be doing that innovation thing everyone else is talking about.
Or they might just be screwing off.

there is a tree 
of your faith 
it is old 
and decay runs through it 
some limbs still reach to the sky 
others, tethered by girdling roots, 
suckering weak growth trying to outpace 
the healthy heartwoods of the core 
strangle themselves and die 
and their roots spread shallowly, greedily 
sinking their teeth into cesspits once called 
Mammon 
now called business-as-usual 
gilted with greed, green with envy 
rank and vile with the sewage they feed upon 
hollow and rife with disease the tree withers 
as do its people, who speak much of the wood 
but in truth, they no longer feast upon it nor feed it 
scraping away the fallen leaves that blanket 
although they still crawl with the roots 
feeding on what ails it 
spreading their disease 
wetwood frothing 
sweet swan song
there are other trees 
not taken by corruption 
growing straight and true 
in far distant woods 
your poison will not kill them all

or with the tides 
moving oceans
listen, now, to the still, small stream
hold your breath

They can focus on that one thing. They have their one favorite musician and one favorite artist and one favorite author and one favorite food and one favorite color and one favorite season and...
I can't do that.
I mean, I can. I can focus on something, and I enjoy the hell out of it. At that moment, it is absolutely my favorite of whatever it is.
It's not that I move on to another favorite whatever that was, either. Not usually.
Say it's an album, a recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons concertos for violin. I have three copies, two early music ensembles and one by one of my favorite violinists playing with a damn good chamber music ensemble. I also have versions by the power metal band At Vance of parts of at least three of the seasons, and, I think, some other transcriptions as well.
This new version I'm listening to now ~ Rinaldo Alessandrini with Concerto Italiano ~ is unquestionably the most phenomenal, beautiful, and deeply moving of the three full performances. I could sit there and digest this over and over, listening to the subtleties, picking out the pizzicato in the second movement of the Concerto in F Minor, "Summer", and realizing none of the other versions have ever approached that level of clarity and excellence, no matter how much I liked hearing them before.
Unlike, say, Gilbert Kaplan, who is something full time, but, because he loves it so, he conducts major orchestras and plays nothing but Mahler's Symphony No. 2, I couldn't just stick with this one ensemble, or conductor, or piece of music, or composer.
Chances are good the next thing to hook me won't even be a piece of music. Maybe it will be a book, or a hobby, or a food. I won't say I'm not discriminatory ~ and if you talk to me at certain points, you'll realize how deeply I delve into one particular thing, and you'll think that you've got me figured out. You'll pigeonhole me and know exactly who I am and what I'm about. And if you bring it up, I can probably reinvest myself in it and I'm right back there and you think you're right. However, you missed countless other facets, interests, and what have you that caught my interest, oooo shiny! fashion in the mean time.
Sometimes this bites me: someone thinks I am not being genuine because I jump from the one interest they thought I had to the one interest they thought was theirs alone, but it's just another facet for me. In some areas, they'll have a better understanding of whatever that thing is, but often I will have just as deep a knowledge, and a native, fluid understanding of the subject at hand. And I will talk about it at length, and they will think I am putting them on, or trying to impress them, or trying to outdo them. It's much simpler: I am honestly interested and enthusiastic about the subject and I would love to talk about it more...
You see, the other place this comes in with the whole introvert/extrovert thing.
Most people have bits and pieces of both but are primarily one or the other.
I absolutely need to be alone at times. The woods are particularly good for this.
My problem is I absolutely want to share it with you... and you... and my kids and perhaps a certain special person.
I am introverted so deeply, yet I love to be in a crowd, to be on stage, to be the center of attention.
Those goofy multiple choice intarwebs quizzes always end up pissing me off, because there's always at least two options that most represent me... or there's none because all of them are equally repulsive to me, or the exact right answer is not there. In any case, I can see where they're trying to route you, most times... except when they're using references that seem entirely random to me or are otherwise out of my vast range of experiences and interests and expertise.
I almost envy people who have things simpler, who can stick with that one thing.
While I can get pretty damn good at some of the things, sometimes enough to fool those who aren't experts in that thing, I certainly do lose some edge on the expertise of those who are more finely focused.
At the same time, it's fairly challenging for me not to refer to that level of monocular vision as simple, or something that seems or is a little derogatory.
The one place I'm glad I tend to stay focused on, sometimes more so than the other parties involved, is love.
Whether it's the love for my kids ~ which, of course, won't go away for several millions of lifetimes ~ or the love for a partner. It might diminish, and it can certainly be ended in certain ways... but not easily.
Anyway... the spark flickers

returns in the roaring inferno 
explosive 
expansive 
enveloping 
everything
the forest knows 
as the forest flees 
that this is not a death 
this is not an ending
this is renewal

<h1 style="color:green" align="center">Solstice Dreams</h1>
"Tra la la," they say, 
and an old "Heave ho!" 
for Winter comes 
and Wisdom digs into the Earth Below.
From boughs on high 
to the carpeted forest floor, 
nuts and berries are ferried 
to caverns where high forge-fires roar.
"Clink," calls the hammer 
and "clank" the anvil answers 
for Winter comes, 
and Halls are readied for ice-crystal dancers.
When the Trees descend and whisper secrets 
as their Roots drink deep, the Singing shall begin. 
When the snows lay heavy upon the forest 
and the Earth drifts to sleep, the Feasting shall begin.
Still and silent, 
on the surface it seems; 
for Winter comes, 
and soon enough it will be time for Solstice Dreams.

Sometimes, they're just colorfully titled thematic orchestral pieces.
In other words, symphonic poems.
There are certain types of works I hunt down ~ violin concertos, works for harpsichord or organ, works by certain composers such as Hugo Alfv&eacute;n or Elinor Remick Warren ~ but perhaps the most sought after works are those with mythological themes, and that's exactly the kind of thing that gets bottled up and orchestrated into a symphonic poem.
The titles of the pieces alone can set you to thinking, and then when you hear the piece you'll often find the story easy to follow along. While I can't vouch for all of the pieces I listed above, I have most of those above in my collection ~ and there are a few I will seek out for my own listening pleasure. I have to admit, though, that I included Godzilla Eats Las Vegas for its name alone, rather than strictly to show this form is not a thing entirely of the past.
The Dvorak poems have some of the more evocative titles and tell their stories with depth and dynamics. I have included one here for your listening pleasure ~ the others on the list will need a little research and exploration on your part!

explosion expanding 
fire in the sky from the breath of the beast 
abandon hope 
all ye before and below
tempered in the fires 
talons raking 
stoked in the belly of the beast 
flames strafing 
the inferno ignited 
wings stirring the wind 
raising the fires higher 
in apocalyptic choir 
roaring crescendo 
pierced by the cry 
as it plummets from the sky
the beast looks to the fire 
and then catches your eye 
"if i knows one thing" 
it says to you 
in its terrible monstrous voice 
"'tis fire" 
it says to you 
"'tis fire, 'tis ready" 
and its talons reach 
towards you
and you swallow 
apprehensively 
and hand the dragon 
a marshmallow 
for its skewer
