259. WPPI UK Site

  260.
Canadian Sam Scarrino is a second-generation photographer and has been a professional for over 25 years, and his highly rated training sessions draw on his vast wealth of knowledge and experience.

  261.
For over a quarter of a century now photographer Sam Scarrino has paid his dues as a professional, working hard to acquire his skills and achieving a long list of honours in the business and a reputation for creating work that is overflowing with artistic quality along the way. The owner of Horvath Photography in Toronto, Sam is an internationally known Master Photographer and he’s a regular on the training circuit, giving the others the benefit of his expertise in a series of highly rated workshops that have been delivered at venues all around the world.

  262.
“This will be my third year in a row speaking at The Societies’ Convention,” he says, “and it’s such a special place for me as I enjoy seeing and meeting new friends from the UK and all over Europe. I’ve been a member of The Societies for around five years now, and my programmes have always been about posing and lighting fundamentals, while I’ll also touch on fundamentals relating to the business of photography at times as well.”

  263.
Always highly popular wherever he teaches, Sam bases his workshops around personal experience and the challenges he’s found within his own career, both on the technical and the business fronts. He first started acquiring his technical and people skills shooting weddings for his parents’ photography business, and then after a few years where he didn’t do so much photography, he made the decision at the age of 21 to look for work at the Toronto studio of Tibor Horvath, his aim being to learn, to grow and to become a Master photographer.

  264.
“I worked my way up,” he says. “I started entering competitions and I worked really hard.” Within a few years he had become a partner in the firm and by the age of 27 he had earned his Craftsman and Master degrees from the Professional Photographers of America. After seven years of working for the studio he was the co-owner of Horvath Photography and three years later he became the outright owner.

  265.
This was a period that saw Sam consolidate his achievements and he balanced his time between running a busy studio with picking up awards for his work in print competitions. Hard work was second nature to him, and he would be the principal photographer on two to three weddings every weekend, also taking on anything up to 120 portrait bookings a year. In many ways this was a mark of the success he was achieving, but with a young family behind the scenes it was too much and, after initially taking a step back from the teaching and the competition aspects of his career, Sam made the decision at the age of 39 to close his busy downtown studio and to relocate the business to a Victorian house in Thornhill, about 10 miles from his former base. He moved again two years ago to a loft-style modern space in the suburbs of Toronto. “We went from a lower-priced, higher-volume business to a higher-priced, lower-volume business,” he says. This process was largely achieved by raising the starting prices and making the business more bespoke, something that immediately changed the nature of the clientele that was being attracted. Those who were looking for a cut-price deal were immediately discouraged and went to look elsewhere, while those who were left were the kind of clients who were looking for a particular level of quality and service, and were prepared to pay for the privilege.
266. “I had just reached the point in my career where this kind of decision needed to be made,” says Sam. “There are only 52 weeks in a year. Of these, you can probably plan to work about 40. During these weeks you have to generate a certain amount of income to survive and pay your employees.” It was clear that these 40 weeks had the potential to be used more profitably, and Sam saw the opportunity to maintain his income while increasing the quality of his work/life balance, getting more enjoyment out of the business and having the opportunity to become more personally involved with the requirements of his clients during their time at the studio.

  267.
It was a valuable lesson to learn, and it’s one that Sam is keen to pass on to others via his workshops. He does note, however, that any hike in prices does need to be accompanied by a similar raising in the level of service being offered. “Now it’s all about the quality of the work and the interaction,” he says. “Clients become our friends, and that’s important for building trust. Someone who’s investing $8,000 or $9,000 in their wedding photography is not going to spend that just anywhere. The same thing goes for portrait clients who are spending $2,000 or $3,000 on their images: they’re not going to be interested in a studio that just tries to see how many portraits they can turn around in a single day.”

  268.
Achieving the quality

  269.
Along with great service, clients who are paying a higher rate for their pictures will also expect fabulous work, and it’s up to the individual photographer to be on top of their shooting technique but also to recognise the styles that the contemporary client is looking for. Both of Sam’s workshops at the 2013 Convention will be addressing this area, and he’s covering both the portrait and wedding aspects of his business in these sessions.

  270.
The first workshop is on the Friday and addresses fundamentals for the portrait photographer. “This programme will introduce posing dynamics and body language, direction of light and composition,” says Sam, “and I’ll be combining all of these things to create a visually impactful image. Various lighting and composition fundamentals also play an important role in the image, and I’ll be showing delegates how to find them and deal with them in outdoor and indoor locations. Understanding the fundamentals of shooting portraits and seeing how you can utilise these concepts in your business will set you apart from your competition in a very competitive global market.”

  271.
The next day Sam turns his attention to wedding photography, with a workshop on wedding portrait techniques. “Wide-angle dynamics will be introduced to create images with multiple layers of interest,” says Sam, “and I’ll be talking about such things as compositional lead-in lines that can create a contemporary style, and how to explore the areas of emotion and sensitivity Various lighting and composition fundamentals also play an important role in the image, and I’ll be showing delegates how to find them and deal with them in outdoor and indoor locations.”

  272.
Teaching of this calibre is going to be hugely popular, and those who find themselves in London this coming January will be in for a treat. For Sam it’s all about being part of the industry and giving something back, and his experiences have the potential to help other photographers out there to turn their own businesses around.

In this day and age of TTL exposure and flash units that… dial down to 128th power (without neutral density filters) the timeless effect is still valid.

  336.
We were ‘forced’ to employ these techniques even when we were limited to ISO 100 film emulsions. The technique of balancing your off camera flash settings with the ambient fill light are as valid today as back in the day. Fundamentals, people. There’s a reason your Nikon and Canon strobes come with that little diffusion cover today…properly used it’s nothing less than the perfect little bare bulb.” Michael ONeill

  337.
Then I got an email with some bare bulb images from my old buddySam Sciarrino in Canada. Again, great examples of a terrific technique! Sam’s note to me said, “I guess I’m not on your radar right now. Just a couple of images to look at, all bare bulb.” Attached were a half dozen stunning images of which the two below were my favorites! Sam, buddy, you’re on my radar!

  363.
For Sam Sciarrino, being a professional photographer simply means being a professional—period. It’s not about convoluted marketing schemes, gimmicky images or acting like a rock star. Even a short
364. conversation quickly reveals that Sciarrino is someone who sets everhigher standards for all aspects of his business, but also that he is adept at prioritizing his objectives and working toward them in a strategic way. Sciarrino is a second-generation photographer who began his career shooting weddings for his parents’ photography business. He didn’t do much with the skills he learned until he turned 21 and walked into Tibor Horvath’s Toronto studio with a mission—to learn, to grow and become a master photographer. “I worked my way up,” he says. “I started entering competitions and I worked really hard.” Within a few years he became a partner in the firm. By the age of 27 he had earned his Craftsman and Master degrees from Professional Photographers of Canada; at 28, he added to that list with Craftsman and Master degrees from PPA. Seven years after walking through the Tibor’s door, Sciarrino became the co-owner of Horvath Photography; three years later he attained full ownership.
