45.
Your basement is practically its own floor, yet so many homes don’t take advantage of this space. Instead of relegating it to storage or where you keep the furnace and washing machine, consider finishing and remodeling your basement. A basement has the potential to become a brand-new room that fulfills a specific purpose. With our remodeling services, we can transform your basement into a custom bonus space.

48.
49.
Game Room

50.
51.
52.
53.
A finished or unfinished basement can easily be converted into a game room perfect for entertaining guests. You can make the floors carpeted, hardwood, or tile, add shelves to keep board games, and get a pool or air hockey table. For the walls you can hang a dartboard or mount a flatscreen TV along with sports memorabilia. For an added bonus, you can even add a bar setup so all of your friends will want to come over for game night.

54.

56.
57.
Children’s Playroom

58.
59.
60.
61.
A basement might not be the immediate thought of a kid-friendly place, but you can easily turn a basement into a great playroom or den for the kids. Plush carpet, brightly-colored walls, and storage for toys are simple ways to make it welcoming to your kids. Or you can get really creative with building a playhouse or slides that will keep your kids entertained all the time. It’s only limited to yours – and your child’s – imagination.

62.
63.
64.
65.
Wine Cellar

66.
67.
68.
69.
Is there anything that screams “class and luxury” like a wine cellar? Converting your basement into a wine cellar can be a great use of the space, especially if you have an extensive collection. You can keep your wine temperature-controlled and install climate control technology to keep humidity levels low so the corks don’t absorb moisture and mold is kept at bay. The basement also doesn’t get much natural light, so you can control the amount of exposure to light your wines get, too.

70.
71.
72.
73.
Home Theater

74.
75.
76.
77.
The basement is the perfect place to set up a home theater. It can be as dark as you want it so you’ll feel like you’re in a real movie theater. Be sure to add soundproofing to the walls and ceiling you’ll be able to dampen any sound effects that come from the surround sound so the rest of the house can stay peaceful. To really make your home cinema experience, add comfy recliners, buy a popcorn machine, install the biggest flatscreen TV your wall will allow, or even go the extra mile with a projector. Then you can host movie nights for friends and family, or just curl up with a glass of wine and your favorite comfort flick after a long day.

78.
79.
80.
81.
The basement is the hidden treasure of your home as it’s full of endless possibilities. Instead of letting it go to waste, let JM Construction remodel it and transform your basement into something spectacular. The basement could very well become your favorite room in the house by the time we’re done.

98.
With spring officially underway and the weather becoming more beautiful, you’re going to want to spend some time outside. But if you’re customizing your dream home to feature a wonderful outdoor entertaining area, you might be wondering whether you should build a deck, patio, or porch. Is there a difference between the three?

99.
100.
101.
102.
There is a difference between a deck, patio, and porch, and we’re here to explain so you can decide which is best for your home.

103.
104.
105.
106.
What is a Deck?

107.
108.
109.
110.
A deck is an outdoor structure most commonly made out of wood. It lacks a roof and is typically attached to your house, though it isn’t a necessity. Most people like to install their deck in the backyard, while others enjoy having it off to the side of their house. It mainly depends on the layout of your home and property.

111.
112.
113.
114.
While decks come in all different shapes and sizes, it’s important to carefully consider how big you want yours to be. If you’re the type who loves to barbecue, you’ll want a larger deck with space for a grill, chairs and a table for eating, and possibly a large umbrella. However, if you just like to sit in the sun on your own and read, you don’t need much more space than a comfortable chair and a little side table for your drink.

115.
116.
117.
118.
What is a Patio?

119.
120.
121.
122.
A patio is typically a paved area in your yard that isn’t attached to your home, though it is often right against the edge of your house. It’s most common for contractors to use concrete, bricks, or stones to create a patio depending on the client’s aesthetic preference.

123.
124.
125.
126.
A patio’s purpose is to give people an outdoor space to relax, sit and eat. They’re very popular areas for entertaining, as unlike decks you don’t have to worry about weight restrictions. You can also install luxury amenities like a fire pit or bar. Patios are most commonly found in the backyard though some can be found in the side yard.

127.
128.
129.
130.
What is a Porch?

131.
132.
133.
134.
A porch is similar to a deck in that it’s an open-air structure attached to the house. However, the biggest difference is that a porch has some kind of roof over it. If there are walls, they’re usually screens to keep out bugs but still allow airflow. Also unlike a deck or a patio, a porch is located in front of the house. While it can be used for hosting get-togethers, a porch is often small or narrow and is meant to simply be a safe and comfortable place to sit while enjoying the weather.

135.
136.
137.
138.
Porches can be made out of all kinds of materials, such as wood, aluminum, stone, plastic, and PVC. This means there’s a lot of customization available to homeowners so they can have the exterior of their dream home look exactly as they envision.

139.
140.
141.
142.
Whether you choose a deck, patio, or porch depends on your needs, vision, and the layout of your home and property. Contact JM Construction today for a consultation and begin building your ideal outdoor addition.

161.
Storage space is a necessity in any home, including luxury homes. You can’t just leave your stuff on the floor. Everything should be put away in its designated place so it can be found and used as needed and kept out of the way when not. However, one of the perks of remodeling your home is that you can add creative storage solutions to your luxury home.

162.
163.
164.
165.
Creative Kitchen Islands

166.
167.
168.
169.
The kitchen island is a tried and true storage solution for pots, pans, and other cooking utensils. The concept itself isn’t necessarily creative, but you can get creative with the interior for more efficient storage solutions.

170.
171.
172.
173.
Lazy susans inside the cabinets can make it easier to get things that would otherwise be hidden all the way in the back. Or the kitchen island can have cabinet doors that reveal pull-out drawers inside instead of shelves. Basically, with a little creativity, your kitchen island can become a more efficient storage option than your traditional cabinets. This can save you from needing to turn a closet into a pantry or stacking heavy pots on precariously high shelves.

174.
175.
176.
177.
Narrow Cabinets for Tight Bathrooms

178.
179.
180.
181.
Not every bathroom is particularly large. In fact, if you have a guest bathroom in the hallway, storage space might be hard to come by. However, if you get creative, you can find ways to turn the narrow spaces into premium storage.

182.
183.
184.
185.
There could be a gap between the wall and the shower that you could install shelving or insert a tallboy cabinet into. This would be ideal for towels, toiletries, makeup, hair dryers, and other necessities you want in the bathroom. Keeping them in a cabinet with a door as opposed to open shelving helps keep everything safe from the moisture in the air, preventing mildew, while keeping a clean and tidy aesthetic.

186.
187.
188.
189.
Closets and Shelves Under the Stairs

190.
191.
192.
193.
The space under the stairs is shockingly underutilized. Depending on the layout of your home, this space is absolutely perfect for bookshelves or even an entire coat closet. This space can even be used for nontraditional wine storage, as it typically doesn’t see much light. This keeps your wine collection safe, level, and easily accessible for when you want a bottle of Bordeaux, or Cabernet Sauvignon to share at a dinner party.

194.
195.
196.
197.
Another creative storage solution for your stairs is installing drawers. Like with the kitchen island, concealing the drawers with cabinet doors makes the exterior look unassuming, while the deep drawers can hold a surprising amount of goods like sports equipment or pet supplies. Really, with a little imagination and a great design, the space under your stairs could become the best storage you could ask for.

198.
199.
200.

With some creative remodeling, you’ll get all kinds of unique storage solutions for your custom home. Contact us today and we can help you design and construct the cabinets, closets, and drawers that will make use of every square foot of your home.

218.
With spring just around the corner, you might be inspired to do some remodeling or renovations. As you make your plans, consider adding a mudroom to your home. They are popular storage options, can help keep your home clean, and can be utilized in a variety of ways. But if you’re not familiar with the term, here’s a rundown of what a mudroom is and why your house should have one.

219.
220.
221.
222.
What is a Mudroom?

223.
224.
225.
226.
A mudroom is typically a room set aside in your home where you can take off shoes, boots, and jackets, store equipment and toys, and generally avoid tracking mud and dirt into the rest of the house. It’s most commonly treated as a secondary entrance and is often located off of the kitchen or garage, though it could be attached to any area that’s easily accessible to the main house.

227.
228.
229.
230.
Benefits of a Mudroom

231.
232.
233.
234.
Mudrooms are great because they keep the rest of your house cleaner and reduce clutter. They’re often treated as utility rooms and storage spaces, especially for outdoor equipment. With a mudroom, you won’t need to store things in the garage or the basement. They’re also wonderfully versatile and can easily be customized to your needs and aesthetics. You can keep it utilitarian or you can decorate it so it’s both functional and beautiful.

235.
236.
237.
238.
Do I Need a Mudroom?

239.
240.
241.
242.
Not everyone needs a mudroom, but they’re extremely useful depending on your lifestyle.

243.
244.
245.
246.
Party Hosts

247.
248.
249.
250.
The mudroom sees a lot of usage for homeowners who love to entertain. It can be used as a coat room for guests so they aren’t just piled onto a couch, taking up space and looking untidy. The mudroom is also great for storing furniture or decorations that might take up space where you’re entertaining, like the living room or dining room. If you have a pool, you can leave wet towels and bathing suits to dry in the mudroom after your guests change back into dry clothes.

251.
252.
253.
254.
Families

255.
256.
257.
258.
Families with children especially benefit from a mudroom. Kids can be messy and careless, often leaving footprints and discarded clothes and toys in their wake after playing outdoors. A mudroom becomes a designated space where kids can leave dirty shoes, wet snow pants, and other outdoor clothes. It’s also a great place to store outdoor toys and sports equipment. Everything from soccer cleats to hockey sticks can be left in the mudroom, ready to be grabbed on the go instead of misplaced somewhere else in the house.

259.
260.
261.
262.
Pet Owners

263.
264.
265.
266.
Pet owners also can make great use of a mudroom. It’s the perfect area to clean off your dog if they’ve been rolling around in the grass, gotten wet from the rain, or walked through mud. You can also keep your cat’s litter box in the mudroom to avoid the smell or litter getting tracked into your home. Toys, leashes, carrying crates, and grooming products can be stored out of the way but still easily accessed as needed.

267.
268.
269.
270.
If you’re looking to do a home remodel, consider adding a mudroom to your plans. This versatile utility room could solve your storage needs and keep the rest of your beautiful home clean. Contact us today to request a consultation and begin designing your dream home.

288.
Generally, winter isn’t the ideal time to remodel your home or even make extensive renovations. The cold, wet, and often unpredictable weather puts a damper on most construction projects. However, winter is the best time to start planning your spring remodel! Treat the snow outside as a blank slate and start dreaming up all the possibilities you can bring to life come spring.

289.
290.
291.
292.
See What Needs An Update

293.
294.
295.
296.
When you’re stuck inside your home during the winter, it’s easy to start noticing when a room isn’t working for you. Your kitchen doesn’t have enough countertop space for all of the baking you’re trying to do. The living room is too dark and could use bigger windows or a skylight. The basement could be transformed from a storage space into a multifunctional apartment. Planning a remodel of any of these could end up being the planning project that keeps you busy this winter.

297.
298.
299.
300.
Be Proactive

301.
302.
303.
304.
Winter is especially the time when you’ll notice if a room isn’t properly insulated. Drafts under the doors and around windows will absolutely be noticeable. These drafts aren’t just an issue in the winter – they also mean the room won’t be very energy efficient in the summer when the AC gets turned on. When you notice these issues in winter, they can be fixed in the spring, meaning they won’t be there when the summer finally hits.

305.
306.
307.
308.
Research Materials and Fixtures

309.
310.
311.
312.
You might not be able to start construction until spring, but this is really a blessing in disguise. Planning in winter gives you ample time to do your research on paint, lighting fixtures, flooring, and other materials.

313.
314.
315.
316.
As there’s no real rush to get started, you can spend extra time looking up which materials will work best for the room’s purpose, which might be eco-friendly or sustainably sourced, and which suit your aesthetic best. This extra time also lets you shop around and compare prices so you’ll be able to get the best deals and make the most out of your budget.

317.
318.
319.
320.
Get In Touch With A Top-Notch Contractor

321.
322.
323.
324.
The best part about starting your home remodeling planning in the winter is that you can get in contact with contractors ahead of time. Like with materials, winter gives you time to research different contractors and decide which one is right for you.

325.
326.
327.
328.
Be sure to look up what kinds of rooms they specialize in and whether they offer both design and building services. Reading reviews will give you a great look into how they handle customer service and timelines. You can check before and after photos of jobs they’ve done to get a better idea of the transformation you can expect. Taking the time to research and talk to potential contractors is the only way to ensure you’re getting a quality company whose goals align with yours.

329.
330.
331.
332.
Most importantly, by getting in touch with a top-notch design in winter, they can book you in for spring. You won’t have to worry about being put on a waiting list that’ll push your plans back for months. Your chosen expert contractor will be able to get your remodel started right away.

333.
334.
335.
336.
Winter is indeed the best time to start planning your home remodel, so don’t sit around and wait for spring. Assess your home, consider your options, and contact us today to request a project consultation.

354.
Since the olden days, few things have said “luxury and comfort” in a home like a beautiful fireplace. Whether you live in a classic Colonial farmhouse or a modern mansion, a fireplace is nearly always seen as a positive. It’s a statement piece and these days it’s feasible to add one to nearly any room in your house with the proper design/build company. When planning your next home remodeling project, consider the benefits of adding a fireplace to your home.

355.
356.
357.
358.
Iconic and Customizable

359.
360.
361.
362.
Picture this; it’s a classic New England winter and it’s once again snowing outside. You and the family have just come inside from playing in the snow, and you’re all looking forward to warming up from the chill. A fireplace is immediately what comes to mind at this point, isn’t it? We all have that iconic image of the family gathered around the fireplace, warming their hands, toasting marshmallows, and just spending time together. It’s a gathering place for family and friends alike.

363.
364.
365.
366.
When you get a fireplace installed in your home, you can also customize it to best suit your home’s aesthetic. You can surround it with stonework for a truly classic look. A more modern style with textured tile and intricately layered millwork could also suit you. It can truly bring a sense of opulence and add ambiance to the room.

367.
368.
369.
370.
Alternative Light and Heating Source

371.
372.
373.
374.
Another thing many know about winter in Massachusetts is that the weather can cause issues. This is especially during fall, winter, and early spring. Power outages during storms and blizzards often plunge the house into darkness and can cause disruptions with heating. This is where a fireplace can really help, as it’s an easy alternative heating source. A classic wood-burning fireplace will provide light and heat for hours in the event of an outage.

375.
376.
377.
378.
Even if there’s no power outage, fireplaces are great alternative heating sources during chilly days when you don’t want to fully crank up the heat. Many modern heating systems heat the whole house rather than specific zones. This can be great if the whole house needs it. However, it’s a waste if you’re only going to be in one or two rooms on a given day. Gas and electric fireplaces all do a great job of heating a single room. This lets you keep the heat low in the rest of the house while you stay cozy in whichever room your fireplace is situated. This can save you money on energy bills and also be beneficial to the environment.

379.
380.
381.
382.
Easy Installation for Added Home Value

383.
384.
385.
386.
Because fireplaces are so useful and iconic, they’re an easy way to add value to your home. Electric fireplaces in particular are easy to install just about anywhere in the house as they don’t require venting. Meanwhile, gas fireplaces do require venting, but there are still a lot of installation options for them as they can be installed next to combustible building materials but not be a fire risk. This means you can add a statement fireplace to nearly any room in your house. This will increase the appeal and value of your home.

387.
388.
389.
390.
If you think your home could use some additional heat and style, a fireplace is the way to go. If you’re looking to add one to your home, request a consultation with us and we’ll help you navigate the details involved in your renovation, from design through construction.

409.
Luxurious primary suite additions are becoming increasingly popular for homeowners who value their space. If you’re looking to renovate and remodel your home, a primary suite should be at the top of your wish list. But as you make these plans, consider what will make your new living quarters a cut above the rest and make you the most comfortable. Here are the luxurious must-haves for your primary suite.

410.
411.
412.
413.
Large Picture Windows

414.
415.
416.
417.
Large picture windows can give a room a sense of luxury and scale. You’ll especially appreciate a giant picture window if you live in an area with an incredible view. Whether your primary suite overlooks the ocean, a mountain range in the distance, or a lush forest, who wouldn’t want to wake up to a beautiful view?

418.
419.
420.
421.
Big, luxurious picture windows also provide a lot of natural light, which greatly benefits any primary suite. It can make a room appear larger, and natural light also has health benefits. This includes lower blood pressure, warding off seasonal depression, and improved sleep. So installing a picture window in your primary suite improves both aesthetics and wellness.

422.
423.
424.
425.
Walk-In Closet

426.
427.
428.
429.
For fashion-forward trendsetters, there is nothing better than a walk-in closet. It’s the perfect addition to a primary suite as it keeps your bedroom area from getting cluttered with wardrobes, bureaus, full-length mirrors, and shoe racks. Instead, you can keep all of that in your spacious walk-in closet.

430.
431.
432.
433.
Walk-in closets are also beneficial to those who value organization. There’s enough space to properly sort dresses, suits, shirts, shoes, and pants. This also makes getting dressed first thing in the morning more efficient, as you can find everything more easily. On top of that, all of this extra space keeps your clothes in better condition, as they aren’t crammed into drawers and can air out when not being worn.

434.
435.
436.
437.
En-Suite Spa Bathroom

438.
439.
440.
441.
Is it really a primary bedroom without an en-suite bathroom? Maybe, but it wouldn’t be nearly as luxurious. A large, luxurious bathroom is a great addition to a primary suite, especially if it has spa-like amenities. A vanity with double sinks is convenient for a couple who otherwise might need to fight for space as they get ready in the morning.

442.
443.
444.
445.
Another thing your bathroom should have is a luxurious tub or shower. Whether it’s a whirlpool bathtub or a walk-in shower, you want space to relax as you wash. Be sure to add some wet lighting to illuminate your at-home spa so it feels more open and spacious. Niche lighting in particular is attractive because they’re subtle but still light up the areas that might get dark, like the inside of your shower.

446.
447.
448.
449.
A luxurious primary suite should accommodate your various needs, from giving you a good night’s sleep to keeping your clothes organized to providing you with a spa getaway without leaving your home. 468.

469.
It is every bibliophile’s dream to have their own custom home library. If you were ever left awed by that iconic scene in Beauty and the Beast, you know how incredible an experience walking into a room and being surrounded by books can be. Ready to show off your book collection and have a place of silence and solitude to enjoy a good novel? We’re here to help you design a home library that will impress visitors and give you a cozy place to read.

470.
471.
472.
473.
Be Smart with Shelves

474.
475.
476.
477.
Step one of designing any library is ensuring that all of your books have a place to live. Naturally, this means installing bookshelves, and lots of them. To make the most of the room’s space, we suggest installing floor-to-ceiling shelves. This way you can fit as many books as possible instead of wasting space high up or down low.

478.
479.
480.
481.
Of course, if you’re vertically-challenged, you might need to install a rolling ladder or have a stepstool on-hand so you can fetch that novel you’ve been meaning to read from the top shelf.

482.
483.
484.
485.
Also keep in mind that books come in all shapes and sizes, so you might find it most practical to install adjustable shelves rather than fixed shelves. This way you have more leeway and freedom to determine which books should go where. However, if fixed shelves are preferred, you can still stack too-tall books on their sides. This creates more visual interest while not wasting space or leaving the books in a pile elsewhere.

486.
487.
488.
489.
Install Proper Lighting

490.
491.
492.
493.
We’ve been told that reading in dim light can cause eye damage.. While this has been proven false, bad lighting can cause eye strain that makes them hurt. So if you’re a person who wants to sit in your home library and read for hours non-stop, you’ll want good lighting.

494.
495.
496.
497.
One option you could consider is installing large windows or a skylight to let in lots of natural light. Depending on which way the room faces, this could provide you with the perfect amount of reading light during the day. If natural light isn’t an option, or if you’re someone who prefers to read at night, table and floor lamps are a great alternative. If you really want your library to make a statement, however, you could install an elegant chandelier to fill the room with light.

498.
499.
500.
501.
Generate Ideal Conditions for Your Books

502.
503.
504.
505.
A true bibliophile understands that books are precious. While good books naturally endure some wear and tear from being well-read, if you’re building a home library, you’ll need to consider how to keep your collection in good condition. This is especially important if you have any old or rare books that you’d like to preserve.

506.
507.
508.
509.
For starters, you don’t want the room to be too warm when you’re not using it. It’s good to be warm and cozy while you’re sitting in the library reading, but otherwise keep the room relatively cool, or at least down at room temperature. It’s also vital to keep the room relatively dry, with about 35% humidity. This all means that you should ensure your room is climate-controlled and well-ventilated.

510.
511.
512.
513.
If you’re a book lover planning on remodeling your house, you should ensure that a custom home library is in the plans. When you’re making these plans, be sure to consult with us, and we’ll lead you through the remodeling experience to ensure your dream becomes a reality.

540.
When you hear the phrase “energy conservation,” you probably think about saving money. And there’s no doubt that investments in solar, for example, drastically reduce utility bills. But energy conservation is also one of the most effective ways to be environmentally responsible. Most of the pollution damaging our ecosystems is the result of large corporations and their outdated manufacturing practices. But that doesn’t mean we should ignore our own impact on the environment.

541.
542.
543.
544.
With today’s technology, we can reduce our overall energy usage. And the energy that we do use should come from renewable sources. This comes down to two factors: leveraging technology to work around your habits and adding new capabilities to your home. Take a look at these features that not only aid in energy conservation but also look great in the context of luxury design.

545.
546.
547.
548.
Reflective Window Film

549.
550.
551.
552.
Luxury homes are often filled with natural light. That means there are plenty of windows to let that light in; some houses even have floor-to-ceiling windows. While most construction firms will use high-quality, insulated windows, you can add even more efficiency with window film. These thin adhesive sheets block the UV light spectrum from entering your home. Up to 80 percent of the sun’s heat gets reflected away from your window, cutting air conditioning costs by 30 to 40 percent. Older window film often had a noticeable tint to it, but modern technology provides a much more subtle look and blends right into your home’s design while contributing to energy conservation.

553.
554.
555.
556.
Smart Window Blinds

557.
558.
559.
560.
There’s a smart version of nearly everything these days, and window blinds are no exception. These motorized and internet-connected versions let you set when to open and close them, according to your schedule and preferences. You can have them open as you wake up, blocking the sun in the hours before, and therefore reducing the need to cool your home in the summer.

561.
562.
563.
564.
The same goes for when you leave the house. Or in the winter, you can set the blinds to open everywhere other than the bedrooms, warming up the house before you wake up. Smart blinds are compatible with most smart home setups and voice controls, so it’s easy to make quick adjustments, even if you’re not home. It’s convenient and helps with energy conservation, all in one package.

565.
566.
567.
568.
Green Roofs and Vertical Gardens

569.
570.
571.
572.
A green roof – basically a layer of grass – turns a blank (possibly, literally) slate into a patch of biodiversity that has a variety of benefits. One is that the natural waterproofing and resiliency will mean you have to replace the roof less frequently. Another is that the grass absorbs a lot of heat, serving as a natural insulator and air filter. A cooler roof also increases the efficiency of nearby solar panels. As an added benefit, green roofs even reduce ambient noise.

573.
574.
575.
576.
Vertical gardens are a similar concept, with grass and other plants applied to an exterior wall. Many of the same benefits apply, including cleaner air, better insulation, and easier maintenance. Vertical gardens are less susceptible to erosion compared to standard gardens, too, so your plants are safer from the rain.

577.
578.
579.
580.
Efficient Swimming Pools

581.
582.
583.
584.
It’s no surprise that heated swimming pools are a big drain on resources. You’re heating thousands of gallons of water! If you use a gas heater, consider switching to an electric heat pump or solar heater, which doesn’t use fossil fuels. While these can have higher up-front costs, they pay off in the long run due to lower operating costs. The only downside is that they don’t perform as well as traditional heaters in very cold temperatures, so swimming laps in the winter may not be a possibility.

585.
586.
587.
588.

589.
590.
591.
592.
Solar lighting can illuminate your pool area after the sun goes down. Pool lights often use a lot of energy, so offsetting that with solar power can go a long way toward energy conservation. Meanwhile, you can invest in an automatic pool cover that will close with the push of a button. Open it up in the morning to help heat the pool with the sun’s rays instead of a heater, and close it when the pool isn’t in use. You can also set up timers to limit your filtration system’s usage and get a robotic pool cleaner to maximize your efficiency.

593.
594.
595.
596.
Efficient Landscaping

597.
598.
599.
600.
Keep the heat off your patio or porch with pergolas or trellises combined with climbing plants. The plants will block the heat from the sun while also adding an exciting visual feature to your backyard. Meanwhile, you can swap out your traditional lighting with solar outdoor lighting for nighttime.

601.
602.
603.
604.
Climbing plants also help with increasing biodiversity and pollination – a big win for your local environment. If your air conditioning unit is placed within direct sunlight, consider adding some trellises or shrubs to shade it and increase its efficiency.

605.
606.
607.
608.
Irrigation is one of the most resource-intensive household tasks, to the point where several towns have introduced a “once per week” mandate for sprinkler schedules. A rainwater collection system can be an easy step toward energy conservation. Rainwater is better for your lawn and plants since it’s not chlorinated, and of course, it’s free.

642.
643.
So what is “wet lighting?” It’s waterproof lighting, also known as niche lighting, for showers that appears in niche strip lights, which are mainly aesthetic additions to shower and tub designs.

644.
645.
646.
647.
These waterproof recessed lights for showers add an illuminated quality to modern shower designs, and they’ve been a popular feature in many of our recent remodeling projects. In addition to shower niche lighting, you’ll often find niche lighting in other areas of the bathroom.

648.

651.
Want to know more about wet lighting and how you might be able to feature it in your bathroom remodel? In this article, we’re sharing some of our favorite wet lighting projects to inspire you as you plan your next project. Let’s jump right into it.

655.
A Modern, Contemporary Niche Lighting Design in Concord

656.
657.
658.
659.
Our clients in Concord, Massachusetts, brought us a third-party niche lighting design for their modern contemporary bathroom remodel. This home is a contemporary, modern mid-century “deck house.” The homeowners wanted to ensure that updates to the home emphasized the sleek sophistication of its original design.

660.
661.
662.
663.
We love this stylish niche lighting design above the sink in the homeowners’ fully remodeled bathroom. The recess maintains the clean lines of the design, while the light provides plenty of illumination across the double vanity.

676.
677.
678.
679.
When our team redesigned this entire 1970s colonial in MetroWest, a bathroom remodel was naturally part of the package. Our clients have a steam shower with a speaker for listening to music, and they wanted wet lighting that would allow them to adjust the amount of light and ambiance of the shower for optimal relaxation.

680.
681.
682.
683.
We built an attractive niche with recessed lighting into this shower, which features white marble tile with veins of blue and gray. This lighted shower niche added just the right amount of light and style to make the homeowners’ shower more versatile and accommodating.

696.
697.
698.
699.
When we overhauled the primary bathroom in this 1955 Sherborn, Massachusetts, colonial, we added a lovely lighted shower niche in the new walk-in shower. This bathroom has pitched ceilings, which are visually pleasing but can make adequate lighting a challenge. While the shower niche lighting is mainly aesthetic, in this case, it does help add functional lighting to the space.

700.
701.
702.
703.
This spacious walk-in shower features marble tiling and a generously sized bench. Its niche features a light strip at the top. The lighted shower niche is a nice extra touch that truly makes this bathroom overhaul shine.

715.
Functional Shower Niche Lighting in Lincoln

716.
717.
718.
719.
Our clients in Lincoln, Massachusetts, needed more functional lighting for their guest bathroom. This “deckhouse,” built in 1970, overlooks the Sudbury River. Its stunning outdoor views, combined with its mid-century modern flair, deserved to be mirrored inside, too.

720.
721.
722.
723.
Because there was no room in the ceiling for extra lighting, we had to get creative with light strips. Our designer suggested using the same type of light that we use in shower niches, set on a 45-degree angle, and installed on the back side of the ceiling soffit so that it would provide the shower with functional light. It was the perfect way to round out a project that brought both light and warmth to an otherwise dark, cold bathroom.
