Well, after over 5 years, I thought it was finally time to update my home page. I’m sure most people were getting sick and tire of my picture splashed across this home page. For the first time visitor, this site use to be call The Wired World Of John Chow. Now it’s call the John Chow dot Com The Miscellaneous Ramblings of a Dot Com Mogul, because that is what I am - a Dot Com Mogul - and that is what I’ll be doing - rambling. A little somethinig about me. My name is John Chow (as you no doubt notice from the domain name). I also go by the nick name “Moto”, named after the old video game Moto Racer. I live in Vancouver, Canada pretty much all my life. Before discovering the internet, I was a partner in a local Richmond printing company. After over a decade of running a print shop, I decided it was time for a change, and the internet was where I was going to stake my claim. On April 1999, I started a little technology site call The TechZone. That site has risen to become one of the largest hardware tech sites on the net. Currently the site has over 10,000 pages and gets over 200,000 page views per day. Besides taking care of the day to day business at The Tech Zone, I can be seen riding my bike around Vancouver, working out at Fitness World or climbing Grouse Mountain. I am best known for his famous quote “My World! CommentLuv works by checking the RSS feed of the commentator’s blog and pulling the last updated post and displaying it along with his or her comment. In addition to WordPress, CommentLuv is also available as a Drupal and Typepad plugin. The plugin is very easy to install (just unzip, upload and activate) and offers a decent level of customization. You can control the styling of the text, background and link. You can take advantage of the extended features of CommentLuv by registering your URL. Doing that allows you to see the top 20 active sites and see which of your last blog post links have been clicked. It’s a good way to find out if your comments are bringing you any traffic. Unlike my Top Commentators plugin, which only rewards the most active users, CommentLuv gives every commentator with a blog a little link love. It could be the simplest solution you’ve seen to date. No Accounts, No Interface, Just Email The philosophy behind this social bookmarking service isn’t new. You’ve surely encountered a few similar services on the Internet that promise all sorts of traffic rewards, telling you about their system of submitting your website to directories and social bookmarking sites. Typically, these kinds of services will either get you to install some software on your computer or to access some sort of web-based application. From there, you’d enter all of your usernames and passwords for the different social bookmarking sites. Only after all of this could you finally submit a page. This saved time over doing several manual submissions, but it was still time consuming. With USocial, you just do this: usocial-email There is no software to download. In a highly unscientific study, uSocial found that their service was able to generate sustained results after about 20 days. Being able to nearly double your traffic in such a short time is pretty good, I’d say. Whether it can sustain that kind of growth remains to be seen. Naturally, you’ll need some good content too. How Much Does It Cost? Since you are not purchasing a specialized piece of software or anything like that, you shouldn’t be all that surprised that uSocial’s social bookmarking service is subscription-based. I’m assuming that they keep a database of user emails so some rogue user doesn’t take advantage of the service for free. While you could certainly go to the regular page and pay the full asking price for uSocial’s service, you’d much rather get a special deal, right? The regular price for uSocial’s service is $47 a month. However, if you go to the special John Chow discount page, you’ll find that you can get in for $37 a month instead. That’s just a touch over a dollar a day for an unlimited number of submissions.
