46.

Attending an event in Atlantic City? If you have some free time and brought your walking shoes, I am sure you could use a few tips.

 47.
Women-do not venture out at night alone. You are an easy target

 48.
On the Boardwalk EVERYTHING is negotiable

 49.
Negotiate the fare with your push pedi-cab driver.

 50.
The Jitney system (small white 14 pax buses) will take you to/from any of the hotels within the city for $2.25 per person CASH only (have exact change ready). They offer 4 routes so read the sign before getting on.

 51.
Cabs are $13.00 max fare anywhere within the city. Cab’s DO NOT accept credit cards so be prepared. Don’t be surprised that wherever you go the fare always ends up being $13.00. I found this interesting…

 52.
Harry Oyster Bar and Grill on the ground floor of Bally’s has excellent food in a sports bar atmosphere. If you eat at the bar, John is a great bartender/waiter! They are owned by Doc’s (#1 restaurant in Atlantic City) and while the menu is small the food is super fresh and a great value.

 53.
The Continental on the 3rd floor of the Ceasar’s Shops on the Pier is excellent for Tapas and also offers main courses. If you sit in the exterior section you can view the ocean and people watch while chowing down on some delicious courses. Prices are more than reasonable for the quality and size of selections.

 54.
If you are looking for a good buffet, the Borgata offers a nice one at $27.pp as well as the Tropicana.

 55.
The Tropicana seems to have the best night time vibe. It offers numerous restaurants, bars and shops.

 56.
Harrah’s indoor pool is worth a visit. With $1 million in landscaping it is a great escape if you have time.

 57.
The Spa at the Golden Nugget is highly rated and offering some nice specials that won’t break the bank.

 58.
Qua Spa at Ceasar’s is also a great get away if you need a massage and have some free time. They have roman baths and a salt room.

 59.
If you want to shop for some deals the Tanger Outlets located within a ½ mile from the Taj Hotel and directly behind the Sheraton Convention Center Hotel has some great options. Parking at the convention center is only $14 for 24 hours. We hit some great sales at Timberland and G by Guess.

 60.
Revel next door is a beautiful non-smoking casino. It has a great atmosphere if you are looking to gamble or have a nice quiet dinner.

 61.
I hope you find these tips helpful the next time you visit Atlantic City and have some time to kill. Feel free to leave me some comments for additional suggestions!

 84.

Manners: (Wikipedia)

 85.
Manners are the unenforced standards of conduct which demonstrate that a person is proper, caring, non-grouchy, polite, and refined. They are like laws in that they codify or set a standard for human behavior, but they are unlike laws in that there is no formal system for punishing transgressions, the main informal “punishment” being social disapproval.

 86.
Ever wonder what happened to “Manners”? We hear a lot about proper etiquette but what about good old fashioned manners?

 87.
The other day my son said to me, “mom I held the door open for an old lady at the mall and she smiled, winked at me and then held the next door open for ME and said my turn!” He was so shocked by her response yet I think she was shocked that someone under the age of 60 still knew how to treat someone. In an era of technology I think many people no longer interact with others on a personal “look you in the eye” way anymore. Our kids live through their “thumbs” and many of us rely on social media to stay connected.

 88.
I have a project for all of you. TALK to someone you don’t know today. When you go to the store and the cashier is wearing a name badge, tell “Sally” to have a nice day. Recognize people. Hold the door open for a stranger, smile, say hello. Use PLEASE and THANK YOU as often as possible. When you treat others with respect and cordially it becomes contagious and you make other people feel good!

 89.
Here’s one for all my ground transportation buddies:

 90.
Do you have any idea how your chauffeurs drive? Do they use their blinkers? Merge correctly in a rotary? Know how to manage a 4 way stop? Let others merge in front of them? Speed though yellow/red lights? I think you would all be very surprised if you followed one of your chauffeurs for the day.

 91.
Make this part of your chauffeur training. MANNERS. People notice good manners much more than bad now because we are all conditioned to expect the worst behaviors. Make your company stand out by the way your employees treat your clients AND the general public. It’s great PR!

 121.
I hear from many small businesses that they don’t want or don’t know how to get involved in social media. They think it is too labor intensive, for the younger generation or expensive. None of which are true! Social media will soon become the new search. Traditional advertising and marketing are becoming a thing of the past. Who goes to the phonebook anymore to find a service provider? Not many! They go to their smart phone or computer and simply search online. We TIVO through commercials on TV and get irritated when our favorite shows beak to commercials every few minutes. We want info to come to us on our terms and at our time.

 122.

 123.

 124.
Some food for thought for 2013:

 125.

 126.

 127.

 128.
How many of us use a service or buy a product based on a friends recommendation?

 129.
So how does social media affect your business?

 130.
What are people saying about you online?

 131.
Is your business being seen by your customers?

 132.
Are you easy to find?

 133.
When they find you is your website easy to navigate?

 134.
Is it mobile friendly (since most of us search through our cell phones).

 135.
Are they able to find what they are looking for quickly?

 136.
Are they communicating with you through the Internet?

 137.
Are you tracking these visits?

 138.
Do you know how long they spend looking through your website? What pages are they most interested in?

 139.
Have you captured the visitors information somehow? (online inquiry or call to action form)

 140.
What are your competitors doing online?

 141.

 142.

 143.

 144.
Look at your current advertising and marketing efforts and then do a competitor analysis. What can you do better than your competition? Where are your potential customers? How can you be seen by them? What is your value proposition? How will you convey this to your customers?

 168.
Most small businesses can not afford a controller to manage their finances and they rely on an accountant that they meet with yearly to simply do their taxes.

 169.

 170.
Proper planning and oversight through out the year can save you thousands in the end. You need an accountant or controller that can also be a strategic planner for your business. They should be able to help you create budgets for the new year and help review all of your reporting from the previous year to see where savings can be had or more investigation is needed. They should be on your “board of experts”.

 171.

 172.
Many business owners have no idea if they are actually making money in their business. They see sales increases and assume that everything must be going well. It is imperative that as a business owner you understand where your money is going and why. You need to be able to set up budgets within your business. You need to be able to properly plan your spending for each quarter based on projected sales.

 173.

 174.
I can not recommend highly enough taking an Accounting Fundamental class online. It will give you the basic skills you need to be able to interpret the reports and understand what the numbers in your business mean. Being a business owner, we all have strengths and weaknesses. Understanding your finances and how your business runs needs to be one of your strengths.

 175.

 176.
When choosing an accountant be careful to chose one that understands your industry and knows how to properly prepare your yearly returns. Ask for referrals from other small business owners. Interview them. Make sure you feel comfortable “opening the books” to them and letting them into your business. You want them to be a strategic planner and need to be able to trust in their ability to steer you and your business in the right direction. Check their reviews online.

 241.
As we come to the end of 2012 it is a time to review our goals we set for ourselves and our businesses at the beginning of the year. Did we hit them? If not why? What forces were at play?
242. Take the time to review what worked, what didn’t and start to create new goals for 2013. Break down your goals into quarters and be specific on how you are going to obtain them. Be accountable to your goals. As you are reviewing 2012 look at each goal and write down how you achieved it or why you fell short.

 243.

 244.
Did you overspend?

 245.
Did you lose accounts? Gain accounts?

 246.
Were you understaffed? Overstaffed?

 247.
Was it easy to meet your goals?

 248.
Did you make a profit?

 249.
Are you pleased with the performance of your business for 2012?

 250.
How would you do things differently in 2013?

 251.

 252.
Review your Business Plan for 2013. It probably needs to be revised.

 253.
Did you give all of your employees performance reviews? Do they know how you feel they performed in 2012? Do they have a clear path on what you expect from them in 2013? Do you need to revise job descriptions and task lists? What incentives will you put in place to help them achieve the goals you are setting for 2013? Are you allowing them to obtain additional education in order to do a better job for you? Are you encouraging them to contribute ideas to the growth and vision of the company?

 254.
Are you using current technology? Are you creating a seamless experience for your clients? What new technology can you implement for 2013 to benefit your clients?

 255.
What is your online reputation? Did you maintain your social media accounts or were they stagnant for months with no new content? Are clients engaging with you? Are people talking about your business? What are they saying?

 256.
Did you give back to your community? What organizations do you support?

 257.
When was the last time you took a client out to lunch or called them just to check in?

 258.
As business owners we are accountable for the success and failure of our business. As we near the end of the year, we hear all of this chatter about the “fiscal cliff”. How will this effect your business? Are you ready for what’s coming our way?

 259.
Some great resources for your review:

 285.

How many of you have ever done a formal business plan? Do you know where to start? Do you understand just how important a formal business plan is to running your business? Well, would you go on a trip with the family and not plan it out ahead of time? Book hotels, map the route, pack, etc. Well a formal business plan is just that. It gives you a way to meet your goals and clearly outlines your plan to others (like loan officers and others) showing them that you are a solid business with a well planned out strategy of achieving your goals.

 286.
I am now creating my business plan for JRB Management Services. As I begin this project I want to share with you some of the basics so you can start yours too!

 287.
Business Plan Outline:

 288.

 289.
Executive Summary (Include a Board of Advisers if you are not incorporated. These can be professionals that you can reach out to for help in certain areas like an attorney, accountant, PR person, etc…make sure they sign a confidentiality agreement with your business as well)

 290.
Analysis of your Industry, Market, and Competition

 291.
Products or Services you will offer

 292.
Marketing Plan

 293.
Production Plan

 294.
Management Team and Key Personnel

 295.
Financial Plan
 296.

 297.
Summary

 298.

 299.

 300.
Projected Income Statements
 301.

 302.
Year One

 303.
Year Two

 304.
Year Three

 305.

 306.

 307.
Pro-Forma Balance Sheets
 308.

 309.
Start Up

 310.
End Year One

 311.
End of Year Two

 312.
End of Year Three

 313.

 314.

 315.
Cash flow Projection
 316.

 317.
Year One

 318.
Year Two

 319.
Year Three

 320.

 321.

 322.
Appendices
 323.

 324.
All back up documentation

 325.
biographies of Principals

 326.

 327.

 328.

 329.
Make sure your plan has a title page that includes your logo, name of business, address, phone number, and a disclaimer at the bottom stating that all information contained within is confidential.

 330.
Once you create your plan make sure you share it with your top management and key personnel. It will become their road map as well to meet the goals that you have set for your business.

 331.
Good luck and feel free to post any comments that might be helpful as I begin this process!!

How did I get to this point in my life? How did I find the courage to make a life change after 40, married and with two children in college? Am I crazy, or did I have an ah-ha moment? Well I can tell you, it was definitely the latter.

 354.
Back in 1987 I began working in ground transportation. Since that time I have held many and if not all roles in that industry. The past 18 years have been spent in an executive management position. I have been through 9/11, the recession and numerous other business challenges that have pushed me to my breaking point and rocked me to the core. However, we managed to thrive and grow our businesses against insurmountable odds. Along my journey I have met some incredible people and learned some very valuable lessons about business. I feel that at this time of my life, I am better suited helping others overcome their operational challenges and to grow their businesses. I take no bigger pleasure than seeing others succeed and knowing that I was able to give them some valuable advice along the way.

 355.
When I resigned from my previous position numerous colleagues, friends, vendors and acquaintances all urged me to consider consulting other small to medium sized business owners. I was always giving them advice and sharing new practices, specifically with social media and marketing. Through all of this encouragement JRB Management Services was established.

 356.
My plan is simple. Help those who need my help. I am still learning and ready to embrace new challenges. If I can save a business owner valuable time and money by avoiding the pit falls of owning a business in these challenging times, that is my goal.

 357.
My promise to my clients:

 358.
“To give honest, valuable and appropriate guidance to help you solve your business challenges. To treat your business as if it were my own.”
