2. for professionals to recognize whether it is truly a callous or a wart. If you think you’re suffering from a plantar's
3. wart on your foot and it won’t go away, you may need to see a podiatrist for
4. further evaluation and treatment. Here are some differences between a callous and a wart:

5.

6.

7.

8.

9.

Callus - note skin lines and no black dots

10.

11.

12. A callus is thickened skin that develops from excessive
13. pressure or friction on the bottom of side of your foot. They can be painful but not always. Shaving callouses, using callous creams, and padding of callouses in your shoes can help alleviate the pressure allowing the callous to decrease in size. Callouses represent the bodies way of trying to protect the skin from blistering or breaking down due to friction or pressure. Sometimes however, the body becomes overzealous and produces so much extra skin that you will have pain. Calluses and corns are related as they both are build up of thick skin.

14.

15.

16.

17. A wart,
18. however, can appear very similar and is sometimes indistinguishable from a callous.

19.

20.

21.

Wart - note black dots and no skin lines

22.

23.

24. A wart is a virus that finds an area of the skin that has
25. been injured or weakened and invades that area of the foot. The wart begins to form by causing a
26. thickening of the skin. It may or may
27. not be painful and there are several different treatments for warts. It may even spontaneously resolve on its
28. own. But warts can be contagious and you
29. shouldn't wait for it to resolve by itself which could take several months!

30.

31.

32.

33.

34.

35. Some possible between warts and callouses:

36.

37.

38.

39.
Warts may have many black dots in the center

40.
Warts may be more painful when you squeeze side to side

41.
Callouses may be seen more commonly on weight-bearing areas

42.
Warts tend to enlarge and spread

43.
Warts tend to bleed when trimmed

44.
Callouses are more common the older you get

45.
Warts are more common in kids

46.
Calluses have skin going through them while warts don't

47.

48.
49.

50.

51.
58. or irritation of small nerves in your foot.
59. It can occur in one or both feet.
60. Sometimes taking your shoe off and massaging your foot can make the pain

85. notice it not getting better or even worsening over time. Although there are several things that can
86. cause pain on top of the foot, one of the most common is from a stress fracture of the foot.

88.

89.

90. Stress fractures are tiny microfractures that occur in the
91. foot bones. Most of the time, it occurs
92. from performing repetitive motions such as running but can be caused from high
93. impact activities too, like aerobics.

99. Although stress fractures can be difficult to diagnose,
100. there are clinical signs that can help us determine if you are possibly
101. suffering from a stress fracture.
102. Localized pain on top of the foot along the toe joints, arch or midfoot
103. very tender to touch can be a sign of a fracture. Sometimes the area can appear swollen or warm

113. after running several miles, but when should you think of having your foot pain
114. checked out by a professional? I always
115. advise any athlete to have foot and ankle pain evaluated by a podiatrist if the
116. pain is persisting for more than 3-5 days.

117.

118.

119. Athletes can develop inflammatory issues such as capsulitis
120. (soft tissue swelling around the joints), plantar fasciitis (inflammation of
121. the plantar fascia) and Achilles tendinitis.
122. If these inflammatory problems are not addressed with proper treatment,
123. they can start to affect the way you run and how far you can run.

127.

128.

129. Treatment usually involves identifying what is causing the
130. issue in the first place. Usually some
131. type of biomechanical problem is occurring for your feet to develop these
132. inflammatory problems and can easily be treated with the right tools and
133. running advice.

276. plantar fascia can cause heel pain or arch pain. The plantar fascia is a thin fibrous band
277. that connects to your heel bone and goes through your arch to support the whole
278. bottom of your foot. It is like a large
279. strong ligament and is prone to stress with activities when coming down on your
280. feet. The good news is that most plantar
281. fasciitis cases need only conservative treatment to resolve, but be advised…do
282. not try this alone!

283.

289. Call Advanced Podiatry about your heel pain at 813-875-0555.
290. The longer heel pain lingers, the harder it is to treat! Drs. Katz and Johnston have treatment options for every age or activity level to treat plantar fasciitis!

371. lot of you see commercials all day on all these remedies that are out there on
372. the internet, where you can just buy a little pad and sometimes if it’s minor,
373. that’s perfectly fine and that may work for you very well. Anti-inflammatories may work, as well. Ice may work, but really, there are other
374. places that are going to try and get you to get some type of arch pad from some
375. special store and I want to caution you a little bit about that, just because
376. when you’re having arch pain, you really need to understand the cause of the
377. arch pain. It’s not just I have arch
378. pain, I’m going to slip something in there, put a little pad on and we’re
379. done. That is not a way to treat a pair
380. of feet that need to last a lifetime.
381.
382.

383.

384. So, if you
385. go to one of these stores, you’re not necessarily dealing with someone that has
386. major experience. We go to school for
387. many years. We specialize in the foot
388. and ankle and I would urge you, if you have arch pain, to see a podiatrist.

389.

390.

391.

392. So, what
393. are we going to do for you? We’re going
394. to examine your foot. We’re going to
395. understand the mechanics of your foot.
396. We’re going to figure out whether this arch pain is coming from some
397. muscle irritation or maybe there’s something else going on that would be
398. totally missed if you just went to a store, because maybe we would x-ray your
399. foot and find there’s something wrong with the bone, there’s arthritis in the
400. bone. Maybe we would ultrasound the
401. bottom of your foot and find a torn ligament or torn fascia band, which is the
402. big band on the bottom of your foot. So,
403. you don’t want to just rely on someone else that’s not able to make an actual
404. diagnosis.

405.

406.

407.
408.

409. So, if you
410. have arch pain, you owe it to yourself to really have a full exam from a
411. physician and in particular, a podiatrist.
412. So, if you have arch pain and you live in Tampa Bay, call us at
413. 813-875-0555. You can also reach us at http://www.thetampapodiatrist.com and on that site, I have multiple articles that I have
414. written on arch pain, on orthotic devices or arch supports, which we actually
415. make in our office the same day that work great and they really have helped
416. many people like yourself. So, please
417. call us, ask us any questions, come in and see us if you need to get
418. relief. Don’t forget, your feet need to
419. last a lifetime. Thanks and have a great
420. day.

490. playoff push and for the Philadelphia Phillies their chances were weakened with
491. the injury to surging center fielder Ben Revere.
492.

493.

494.

495.

496.

497. During his plate appearance Revere fouled a ball of his inner
498. ankle. Initially Revere thought it was just a bruise until x-rays showed
499. otherwise. Now he is looking at 6-8 weeks of time off. Let’s take a quick look
500. at the overall structure of the ankle and how this affects an athlete.
501.

502.

503.

504.

505.

506.

507. The ankle joint is composed of three bones, your tibia (shin
508. bone), fibula (outside ankle bone) and talus (bottom part of the ankle). When
509. any of these structures are injured it can inherently make the joint as a whole
510. much more unstable. Even injuries such as ankle sprains or high ankle sprains
511. can contribute to instability as well. A fracture of the medial malleolus, in
512. Revere’s case is actually very rare without further injury to the fibula. The
513. reasoning for this is due to the strength of the ligaments found at the inside
514. of the ankle and the mechanisms that cause fractures typically. An example is
515. the fact that more people roll their ankles in than out. These mechanisms
516. contribute to where a specific fracture occurs.

517.

518.

519.

520. In Revere’s case a direct blow of a baseball most likely
521. traveling at around 100 m.p.h is more than enough to cause a fracture. If left
522. untreated, or if Revere continued to play on this injured ankle it could cause
523. significant arthritis, more instability or chronic pain down the road. Under
524. going surgery for an athlete is the quickest road to recovery. By
525. re-approximating the bone with screws and/or plates it helps to create a sound
526. interface for healing. The likelihood is that Revere will be back before his
527. 6-8 week mark suggest based on history of other elite athletes. In the mean
528. time the Phillies will have to try and win without him.

529.

530.

531.

639. glued to the television recently for the Confederations cup being held in
640. Brazil. Italian superstar striker Mario Balotelli will miss the remainder of
641. the games after suffering a torn quadriceps in a recent game.
642.

643.

644.

645.

646.

647. You may be thinking, is a quadriceps tear something that a
648. podiatrist typically deals with? The answer to that is no, but unfortunately a
649. torn quadricep can affect the gait of an individual with long term sequelae,
650. which podiatrist do deal with. The quadriceps is a group of four muscles that
651. make up the front of your thigh. The primary function of the quadriceps is to
652. extend the leg due to a direct pull at the knee joint. One specific muscle, the
653. rectus femoris, also aids in flexion of the hip. Both of these attributes are
654. vital in running, walking and squatting. Clearly running is an important aspect
655. of soccer and having the inability to extend your leg and flex your hip make it
656. difficult to even kick a soccer ball.

657.

658.

659.

660. So how does this relate to podiatry? During ambulation, as stated
661. above, the quadriceps extends your leg while also stabilizing your patella or
662. knee bone. If portions of the quadriceps are torn it will cause weakness,
663. therefore causing your knee and leg extension to have an advantageous pull in a
664. certain direction. In other words if the outside (or lateral) aspect of the
665. quadriceps is torn you will have more pull inside (or medially). The same is
666. true conversely. Not only can uneven pull lead to impingement or pain to either
667. the inside or outside of your knee, it can alter your gait by causing joints
668. such as the ankle and foot joints to act differently because of it. This can
669. lead to pain in your foot and ankles causing instability.

670.

671.

672.
673.

674. If you are experiencing difficulty walking due to pain in your
675. legs, feet or ankles call Advanced Podiatry for an appointment at 813-875-0555.

689. see any single footed animals but the popular flamingo does just fine with
690. balancing on one foot.

691.

692.

696.

697.

698. However, there were many 2 footed animals and birds but some
699. were more interesting than others. Take
700. the prehistoric looking Galapagos Marine Iguanas.

701.

702.

703. This amazing pre-historic looking creature is
704. the only iguana in the world that has adapted to swimming. Notice the amazing colors. It’s distant relative is a very cool
705. yellow-gold land iguana known as the Cerro Dragon as seen on Dragon Hill.
706.

708.

Galapagos Tortoise Foot

713. Both have powerful legs and feet. And then there is the ancient Galapagos Tortoise with huge feet!

714.

715.

716.
717.

718. So how about red feet?
719. Well in the medical community red feet may be a sign of poor circulation
720. and is often referred to as rubor. In
721. Galapagos the amazing Red-Footed Booby

725.

726.

729.

730. has big healthy red webbed feet. As they mature their feet become redder. They have prehensile feet which allows them
731. to hang on to small branches with great balance. Some smaller red feet belong to the swallow-tailed
732. gull.
733.

734.

745.

Blue-Footed Booby

746.

747.

748. And what about blue feet?
749. Well the Blue-Footed Booby has healthy blue feet. Of course if someone comes into our office
750. with blue feet, we are concerned about cyanosis which may indicate poor
751. circulation as well. In some cases cyanosis
752. can be associated with Raynaud’s phenomenon.
753.

754. But these spectacular blue footed birds have very healthy feet. These birds
755. are amazing divers and Olympic divers often watch their techniques for making a
756. perfect entrance into the water with minimal splash.
757.

758.

759.
760.

761.

762.

763. What an amazing display of feet in a land far away. Now back to reality. If you have exotic looking feet with different colors, it could be a sign of circulation problems, so call us at Advanced Podiatry and we will take a look and share some more great photos.
