Knowing what's happening in your industry, in your area of expertise is important. With this age of information and fast changing pace, its important to be on the top the things that are happening in your industry.

During my AeSI and NAL days, i scoured the net and used all the info that NASA’s website and NAL’s pasteboard provided..

At that time, the choices were limited but now the choice has exploded. Numerous sites provide tons of information.

To track all the new things happening in Indian aerospace one needs to peep into so many sites, so i build an app using Google technology and today i am unveiling it to myaesi readers..

Its a one page aerospace news dashboard, that updates itself and harnesses Google's awesome power..

You can have a look at it via this link.. or by visiting myaesi website..

Aerospace News Dashboard

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

My propulsion –III rockets concepts became lively when we visited SARC.

All those topics are still fresh in my mind as then, so when the long-awaited launch of Tata's Rs 1 lakh (Rs 100,000) Nano is around the corner, a thought popped. Seeing the specification of nano at the Wikipedia, I stumbled upon this idea that can be used by anyone studying propulsion-I as a learning experience that he will not forget easily.

As you can see in the cut out of the specification on wikipdeia (listed below), click on the stuff that’s highlighted and you will get wealth of information on that topic. So if you are giving propulsion 1 or just have interest in petrol engine, injector, engine control systems, multi point fuel injection, fuel efficiency, compression ratio, torque, power, rpm ,rack and pinion, ground clearance then just go through the specs of Tata nano and while you are at it click on the links for details of the part.

Utilize this real life example to learn and entrench all those terms in your mind. Studying this way is much more fun and you are more likely to remember this facts than just reading them without this context.

So try it...

TATA NANO technical Specifications (from Wikipedia)
<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" I was amused, the groups mails were opt in and the guys themselves wanted those mails but when they received any mail that was not related to job requirements they shot an email to me to stop filling there email accounts.

Understandably I ignored first few emails but down the line again those few mails resurfaced. So it was then I saw that obviously I was doing too much of the mails in the yahoo OURAeSI group and around that time I w also began to notice the blogging phenomenon so I went ahead and created my first blog and thus my-aesi was born.

Read the first post here in this archive. I am glad I did so. Since then I have filled all my thoughts as student, as AeSI pass out, as a trainee and as a working professional in aerospace industry here. Now when I see back I see this long tail of my transition and some advice that I wanted to pass on to the folks of AeSI.

The blog basically gave me the outlet, the easy medium to share whatever I learnt in all my stages of life. I could have stopped the blog just getting a job but I feel that just as this blog summarizes my journey thought AeSI and after, it will help AeSI students who come after me. This will be one more resource apart from the innumerable others that are available now. (See my post on AeSI community)

This is how this personal blog about AeSI came into being. Hope it has helped you as it has helped me grow.

Read the archive of this blog

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

So take active interest in this stuff.

Yes I agree, Malika Sherawat's moves in her next movie, Shah Rukh khan’s next movie and slumdog millionaire’s success at the Oscars are more interesting topics to chat over around the coffee machine but not learning and keeping up with what's happening in the industry is one bad move that one shouldn't make

As stated in AIAA’s article Actions that will take your career ahead you need to keep tab on the industry we are in.

Love to read this blog via email then Subscribe to AeSI by Email

Related posts:

How I stayed abreast to new development in Aerospace while doing AeSI

Bishnujee on what AeSI graduates can do after graduating

Confidence + degree + skills = job

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Momiyama, a U.S. Senior Executive Service has this to say in the editorial on building a better engineer

Information technology is not a magic bullet. Computers may have replaced slide rules, but nothing will replace providing tomorrow’s aerospace engineers with the opportunity to hone their skills in
basic technologies and to learn from others with true hands-on experience.

This resonates with my view. Importance of these view has already been noted here in this blog when i emphasized that computer software’s are just tools, means to the goal, cars for the journey to the destination.

Hand calculations, internal understanding and having the knowledge to relate small things to the big picture are the abilities that AeSI or any engineer should have and cultivate

Presently i am assigned a FEM software tool, so what is the most important thing for me in it. The most important thing from it is not how best i can mesh or nor is how best i can represent the physical model to the fem counterpart. But the most important part is how i understand and interpret the results it gives. That where my expertise, experience and knowledge will be useful. Yes well formed mesh and good representation of the model are necessary and are vital for accurate results but its the understanding and the interpretation of the results that’s far more valuable.

So as you learn the tools, whatever it might be catia, solidworks, ansys, nastran, gambit, hypermesh or UG etc. Just remember that those are just tools in the hands of an engineer, they aid you and not the other way round.

What are your views on this please do replay in comments, what you think of this tools and what tool are you working on for this year?

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Love it.

here’s a small extract of it. You can read the whole thing here

While building India's first moon craft, Chandrayaan project director Mylswamy Annadurai was reminded of his engineering college days when he wrote lyrics to the tunes of his classmates. At that time he used to write poetry - some were published in the college magazine. 'One of the many challenges in building the spacecraft is to accommodate the six overseas pre-built payloads. We had to design the spacecraft accordingly - sort of writing lyrics to a tune,' 50-year-old Annadurai told IANS from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, 80 km from here. The man who will go down in space annals as the designer of India's first moon orbiter was born in the small village of Kotavadi in Pollachi district of Tamil Nadu. The global aerospace industry is looking at india and china as the engines of growth. So here's the second tip so that you don't left behind. This is the second tip for aesi graduates. Read the first tip here.

Second thing that an aesi graduate should realize is that your strength is your course and the study you did, so be the best in it. By being the best i mean that all the basic questions and topics of flights, propulsion, and aerodynamics should be at your fingertips. While in aesi, don't leave the principle of flights book. Have it as your constant companion. It covers most of the questions that you will face in interviews. So have your basics ready. This is what gururaj also said once.

Being proud of your degree is good but lacking of basis is serious disadvantage. So be strong in them. For a fresher and also for seasoned aesi graduates, the most common interview question will be on his or her favorite subject, so make one subject your favorite. By making i mean, delve into it and have the basics of that subjects in your finger tips,. As a propulsion engineer, mine favorite subject is thermodynamics and i have to be prepared to answer all the basic questions that can come up from this subject.

Don't make a big mistake in this. Capitalize on your strengths How to do this?

3 step plan that i can suggest and i personally use to stay updated in my basics of the subject mentioned above.

Use 30 minutes daily to read an aerospace topic, Read only the basics, like thermodynamics, basic aerodynamics, mach number and all that. Since you will be reading basic so 30 minus is sufficient. ASM folks can read asm subject basics.

Share your knowledge, answer questions in ouraesi and aesi groups. Put some different perspective of the topic you read and discuss of share an interesting or otherwise insight on the things you studied. Use the groups. They are all fellow aesi folks and they will appreciate and learn from it and in turn you will strengthen the topic in your mind.

Play around with an idea and toss it in different direction, apply in the things you see and do during the day. This will fix the data in your mind and your mind will be more receptive the next time you hear a term regarding the topics you read. For example, my most recent topic was torque. So whenever i am seeing things i am relating this topic.

Well this are the steps that one can use to keep his basics strong and keep them from rusting. Use your imagination. Its very powerful tool and if you can use it fairly its can take you higher than any thing you can think.

So to sum up, being prepared is the another thing that an AeSI graduate or student should be doing to catch the aerospace boom! The previous step instilled self confidence and this will show that the confidence is based on solid foundation. So keep your foundation strong!

Please give in your suggestions that i might have missed out in the comments.

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free
