way to really learn something is to teach it to someone. <br><br>Well then here's a proposal to each of you guys visiting/reading this blog. <br><br><br>Let's start teaching. <br><br>The idea is to create a PowerPoint / video or document on any topic that you are studying and post it online for anyone to read and learn. The doc can be of any kind and on any topic that you choose but with the sole aim to teach something. <br><br>The Ground Rules: <br>1. Create the material focusing on one single topic at a time. <br>2. It should actually teach. The aim should be that if our grandmother reads or viewed it she would understood the subject. <br>3. Make it brief. <br>4. It should be sharable via google docs. <br>5. Send me the link for the via comments <br><br>What's the benefit to you? <br>1. You will learn the subject better and will never forget it again. <br>2. You will have the joy of helping someone. <br>3. You are sharing your insight with the world. <br>4. You are creating an asset you can have bragging rights about. <br>5. Creating this will help improve your presentation and communication skills. <br><br><br>So are you game? One was the fun filled evening of cultural festival and other a power packed Saturday of adrenals pumping sports day.</p> <p>Both were well attended and lot of pictures were clicked. I have seen many of the AeSI Grads working at various positions under many UAV programs at Aeronautical Development Establishment for couple of decades. I found them very sincere and diligent.</p> <p>They have shown commitment for work and have impressed me and my establishment with their extraordinary understanding of the engineering fundamentals. They have contributed well with the scientists community in the lab and outside, taken opportunities to discover more about their fields of work. They have independently taken initiative of refining the methods of simulation rather than just concentrating on the results. They have also proven themselves to be adoptable and efficient manager of the resources. Lets explore.</title><content type='html'>A few months back I was interviewing someone. Let's call him Arvind. He was decent. Had the right skills, he knew his subject well and knew what was asked and how to answer it. <br /><br />We were a 3 member interview panel. Even before the interview began we were impressed with his resume. <br /><br />The thing that was impressive about his resume was not what he has written but the actual verifiable evidence he gave of his work. That's what made his resume stand out. <br /><br />A tool he has created in his leisure time is recommened by a professor of the caltech university. His contribution to a programming forum on internet has 1000+ downloads.<br /><br />The fact that all this were not required and he did this in his part time were a positive for him.<br /><br />So what am I getting at?<br /><br />This is what I call personal assets. That guy in his spare time, after his work life was active with his passion and created things with those skills. This way slowly he has built something that others find useful and this is what he leveraged in his job search. <br /><br />This method worked as everyone who saw that resume was impressed. <br /><br />This is what I mean when I ask people to work on side projects. Not only side projects improve your skills but they help you create assets that one can leverage.<br /><br />Internet and tools available there give you immense opportunity to stand out. The question is are you using them?<br /><br /><br />In the year 2012, I will be exploring this topic in more detail. I would like to see everyone participate in this. Does your mind want to beat me up for saying such a unholy thing? Do you feel anxious about the upcoming inevitable AeSI results announcement? <br /></p> <p>Even if you do, but this is a powerful question. This a question that determines how you will fare in your life after AeSI? This determines your overall attitude towards life.</p> <p><strong>How? </strong>During my times I have seen so many students lying about there results when they fail.</p> <p>Lying not to me, not to themselves <a href="http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/2009/03/quit-aesi.html" target="_blank">but to their parents</a>. Announcing them glorious results instead of the actual AeSI results. Hiding the truth just to save the shame. Hiding the truth to defer the hurt!!</p> <p>I am far removed from these AeSI days now and from here I can say <a href="http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/2009/03/quit-aesi.html" target="_blank">that's its a bad move.</a></p> <p>Be truthful to your results. But many a times i missed the goals i set, the tasks i assigned, I felt bad about it latter but it was always that some immediate new thing of some different nature that distracted me. Be it a new movie release or a juicy controversy that emerged from gie. <br /><br />After a long struggle i discovered that many a times i simply failed to do my tasks because i forgot about them, i never realised i had to do it at that time. The main reason for me was that the constant new distractions overflowed on my task list. <br /><br />So what's the takeaway message? <br /><br />Keep reminders. Reminders of your goal. Yes it a simple step but makes a lot of difference if implemented. For my present goal of writing one blog post everyday, i have set my own reminders. Every time i stare at this mobile from which i am writing this post, i see the calendar to do item. Further more, after brushing this is the first thing i do. This two simple techniques has kept me on track of this goal. You can apply this to your own goals.<br /><br />If your goal is to master catia or nastran, then resolved to practise it first thing that you do when you boot up your system. If studying a subject is your goal, then every morning set 30 mins to study that subject. Make it the first thing that you do in your day. <br /><br />So you got the idea. I remember when I crossed section A, I was the happiest person on earth that day. It felt like that. After all, this was the change that I was expecting for a while then.</p> <p> <br />This step meant great to me as this brought me closure to the completion of <a href="http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=amaesi" target="_blank">AMAeSI</a> degree. Crossing over to this side of AeSI degree meant I was just a few steps away from being an aeronautical engineer. It meant being close to the freedom of earning my own money, it meant I was closer to be working at an aerospace organization.</p> <p>So what were the thoughts that went to my mind. The prominent thought that I remember was about learning <a href="http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search/label/catia" target="_blank">catia</a>, as this was only cad software that I heard about back then, it meant looking at the kind of jobs available in the market for aerospace. The thought of the training or job decision also went through my mind</p> <p> <br />What's the point I want to make,<strong> when you are in section A, don't worry about job prospect, skills development, jobs outlook, training or any other thing. Just study and hook your attention to getting good marks and passing section A.</strong> Don't burn yourself in any other tension. </p> <p>Section B and most importantly the last two semester of AeSI are the best time when you need to think of jobs, <a href="http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=skills+job" target="_blank">skills</a> development, <a href="http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=training+after+aesi" target="_blank">training</a> etc. <strong>So till then enjoy your studies. Learn what you read, expand your knowledge, improve your communication skills and&#160; essentially have masti</strong>.</p> <p> <br />Treat your journey of AeSI like a marathon, start slow and steady. Don't burn up all your fuel in the initial legs. Keep them for the last two semester of AeSI. Till then expand your knowledge, do interesting projects, build networks, grow your subject knowledge etc.</p> <p> <br />Being a rocket is not what is required. And if your creative juices flow at the site of analysis software, then go ahead grab the next analysis software that you can and begin. <br /><br />But if you don't know where your passion lies then go ahead explore. Try design software that comes your way or grab that analysis software your friend it working on. Whatever you do, get moving and explore all the options that you can find. Who knows what sticks and you finally discover your passion. <br /><br />But what if you know you want but you don't have access to any software. Well then get excel and learn it. This is one software that you will be using in whatever job you do so get excel and put it to use. I was amused, the groups mails were opt in and the guys themselves wanted those mails but when they received any mail that was not related to job requirements they shot an email to me to stop filling there email accounts. </p> <p>Understandably I ignored first few emails but down the line again those few mails resurfaced. So it was then I saw that obviously I was doing too much of the mails in the yahoo OURAeSI group and around that time I w also began to notice the blogging phenomenon so I went ahead and created my first blog and thus <a href="http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">my-aesi</a> was born. </p> <p>Read the <a href="http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/2009/02/achieve.html" target="_blank">first post here in this archive</a>. I am glad I did so. Since then I have filled all my thoughts as student, as AeSI pass out, as a trainee and as a working professional in aerospace industry <a href="http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">here</a>. Now when I see back I see this long tail of my transition and some advice that I wanted to pass on to the folks of AeSI.</p> <p>The blog basically gave me the outlet, the easy medium to share whatever I learnt in all my stages of life. I could have stopped the blog just getting a job but I feel that just as this blog summarizes my journey thought <a href="http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search/label/aesi" target="_blank">AeSI</a> and after, it will help AeSI students who come after me. This will be one more resource apart from the innumerable others that are available now.
