For privacy reasons, identifiable data has been stripped and changed.

Yesterday I gave an interview in ABC company for the post AB Engineer. I've cleared all the rounds including the one taken by the Managing Director and my final interview is on Saturday. I don't know what will happen but I'll try my best. I'm sharing the interview questions asked by me so that It can be helpful for others through My-AeSI blog.
Round-1
- I developed good professional relation with the H.R. through LinkedIn so my first round was easy. He just asked me about my educational qualification & career objective.
Round-2
- Tell me something about yourself ?
- You have done engineering through correspondence mode so how did you manage practicals ?
- Tell me about the projects you have done during academics ?
- What is your career objective ?
- What is Avionics and what all subjects have you studied in Section-B ?
- You have not made any aircraft related project, all of your projects are of Embedded & Robotics. Why ?
- Tell me about your strength ?
- What is the role of embedded system in Aircraft ?
- Where do you want to see yourself in next 5 years ?
- Being an engineer, Why are you doing M.B.A. ?
Round-3 (With the Managing Director)
- I'm giving you 5 minutes. Let me know about you, your family, education, projects and all in detail.
- Why are you interested in engineering management ?
- Even though there are thousands unemployed engineers in Bangalore so Why should I recruit you ?
- I'll be investing lots of money on you, projects, clients and all... After 6 months or 1 year, you'll learn the technology and join any other company. Why should I give you this opportunity ?
- How you can contribute to the field and the company ?
- Okay I'm assigning you a task. Have a look on our website, understand what we do ? and so on... and then send an email (letter) to the H.R. on "How can you contribute to this company ?" If I like your letter, I'll call you for final session and It'll be around 30 minutes discussion.
I've sent him the forwarded email. I hope I'll get a chance to give final interview. I'm sharing it so that It can be helpful for others.

Hope this helps everybody and don't forget to mention and send your thanks and good luck to the thoughtful guy who shared this information in the first place through the comments. I am sure he will be reading them.
Thank you.

#interview #aesi #myaesi

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

That's important. Because if in the interview, no body can cross you on those fundamentals then no one will question the percentage.

Also I hope, by this time, you have picked up good skills. Technical and otherwise.

Technical and communication skills are the curtains that you will need to get past any interview panel. So cultivate them and become good at one particular relevant technical skill.

My motto is to be so good that they can't ignore you.

And Lastly, Respect the degree and the qualification that you have earned. It's yours. This is what you will go forward with. Your confidence in it should shine through. Any doubt you project will only hamper your progress.

Remember this if you don't respect it, No one else will.

Hope this helps you in your future steps. Best of luck !!

What are your views. Share them here. myaesi

Aero-mechanical stream and other streams are there but what avionics offers is a track that you can utilise for skills development.

When you opt for this stream, you are sure you have to have knowledge of c. So learning c and having an interest in electronics for you becomes a must.

The path for a fulfilling career means that if you want to be good in this field you need to have this skills. You need to love embedded systems, you should love electronics. You craze about the controls and semi conductors.

So you get it. The opportunities make it hot but its your passion in the above mentioned stuff that will make it great for you.

Someone said, follow your passion. This is what will fuel all the abundance that you desire!!!

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

So here you go.
Dear AeSI Engineers & Students,
I believe since many of you from AeSI must be slightly confused with
choice of UK Universities based on there reputation and past
record. There are some excellent Universities like Cranfield
University,Queen's Mary University ,University of Western
England,Bristol,Salford University,University of Sheffield.During last
few years based on Graduate hiring trend,I have noted that newer
University like Sheffield Hallam University which was few of British
Government owned University came into existence in 90s has been doing
pretty good on job after Course completion than some of the highly
rated University. There are some reasons behind it because when course
work was started as Approved Further Learning Programme (CEng) for BE
from AeSI & other Indian Universities ,it has full practical nature
and extensive Industry based coursework content instead of traditional
book work type of assignments & course work followed by traditional
Universities.Students in such
programme are quite mature at design, stress when they Graduate out
due to coursework nature. Each Student work individually as well as
part of team and develop on there own product & project, extensive
presentation skills and very high design and stress lab programme
groom them for career in Stress Engineer & Design Engineer. That is the
reason why MSc Engineers from SHU have captured jobs much ahead than
traditional reputed UK Universities who has still been sticking to
traditional coursework and studies. Please be advised that Cranfield
University newest MSc as Further learning programme might be falling
into same bracket .
Already SHU has 3 AeSI Engineers on its campus who have graduated out
with there MSc programme.
I hope it helps in guiding prospective AeSI Engineers.
Best wishes

Bishnujee Singh
Chartered Engineer (EC-UK)
Chartered Scientist (SC-UK)
Associate Fellow CASI (Canada)
Fellow RAS(UK),MInstPhys
MSc(UK),BAe,MRAeS(UK),MAeSI(India)

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

And I promised that I will post my answers to the questions that I had, so here we go. Hope this will give you some insight and direction in your quest for training after AeSI.

What is my goal for doing the training?

Well when I was at the training stage of AeSI, my most important criteria was to get into a environment which gave me the opportunity to learn and apply my skills. I already had the programming knack and I enjoyed thermodynamic and the propulsion subjects so I wanted to learn something that was based on these two skills. Catia or any CAE software were not in my mind. I was ready to accept learning catia or any other CAD but I wanted to test the waters for my programming skills and the stream I was graduating from.

Is there an alternate way I can fulfill this goal?

Since I had one subject (that is VMD ) left to clear and had the time so I initiated my training to make fruitful use of the time I had and my goal was to learn whatever I can and then give exams while doing this.

What skills I will develop with this training?

For me CAD and CAE skills were not the primary goal. When I joined NAL, my primary focus was what I knew and how I can apply it to the benefit of the mentor who took me as a trainee. So as I sat for the small interview with Dr Ramamurthy sir, my focus was on the c and small vb skills that I had. In fact those were the highlights of my resume at that time.

Are the skills congruent with my specialization?

In those days performance job was the only thing propulsion stream guys did. It was the in thing and for this excel and knowledge of one programming language was the most important so while I joined NAL, I was prepared to focus on these tool and skills. They were as I knew then congruent with my desire of working in an aerospace organization on software development and tools development

How much time I'll spend on the tools?

At the time of joining I made a goal that I will put at least 1 hours of my time in the tools that I want to learn and explore. In my last semester of AeSI, I employed a similar technique and put in a daily goal in which I wrote one c program daily. So I can decided to carry on the same here in my training and made a daily target to put in one hour minimum of my time in learning the tools that are available at my disposal in NAL. I set this minimum one hour limit and vowed not to miss it any day.

Does the skills I will learn congruent with my job goals?

As fate has been, I knew C but when I joined NAL and began working, my mentor handed me FORTRAN programs which I was supposed to run, and debug. This changed my course and without considering a bit I began learning FORTRAN putting the needed hours into it. Then as I began picking it, I was entrusted VB which I began learning in earnest and so as things progressed I picked up the skills that I am now using in my present and last work. So I would say at that time I just wanted to learn something and the best thing that I did then was I didn't block anything that came my way. I just accepted the opportunity that the work brought and carried on and I am thankful that I did so.

Is the mentor I will be working under well known or known to be good?

Yes this was best for me. Even before joining NAL, my friends told that if you want a good training then Dr Ramamurthy was the best for a propulsion stream guy. So He was the first person I approached and by luck I got through. He liked my resume and I got selected. I am glad and will forever be indebted to have him as my first boss later when I joined NAL as a contract engineer.

What are my 3 specific targets from this training?

My 3 specific goals during the training were.

To apply what I knew to the benefit of my mentors work, be it in programming, designing or analysis.

To be market ready and learn whatever is presented in my way

To gather skills and experience that will help me get a job after the training

How long I am willing to put in the time in what I do?

Since I still had one subject to clear, so I knew 6 months was “pakka” for me to stay and I decided that I will stay 6 months more before I head for any job. I even promised Dr Ramamurthy about this and in reality I stayed more than that duration and it was all worth it.

Do I really believe all the answers I have written?

When I did this training and decided to join, I knew what I am good at. So I wanted to test the water and wanted to see what I can learn and what I love the most. Even though my thoughts were not so clear about what I liked more (programming or designing or analysis), but I knew I wanted to explore my possibilities and areas of interest and training in NAL did fulfill all my wishes and helped me know what I enjoyed the most and wanted to work.

How will you quantify your success at the training?

This was one thing that I did in two ways one was to log the hours on each software that I worked on. So every night I came home and noted the hours that I put in each software. This helped me learn incrementally. Sometime even when there was no work I just explored that software and tinkering with it, always taught me a thing or two.

Another way I quantified my success was by crafting my resume, all that work that I did there increased my work experience and taught me new software tools every month, so I made a resume every 2 month with the updated new skills and work and posted it in naukri.com. This updating showed me that I was learning and the posting of resume in naukri brought in the new offers in my email that showed me what kind of profile I was building with the skills I was acquiring.

So that’s it,It has become a longer post that usual but I hope it helps AeSI students who are looking for training to clarify their thoughts and helps make them better choices.

Want to receive this and similar posts in your email then subscribe here or you can check the achieve here.

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

I have seen that in job interviews if you are the first guy you set the agenda. You make an impression that is carried forward to the rest of the candidates.

Here are my two practical tips that I have learnt about any walk in.

1. Be the first... when the walk in is on Saturday and Sunday, I saw many people go there on Sunday thinking Saturday will be crowded or other similar reasons. But going on the very first day at the very first hour has advantages.

See if you have the required experience and you match to the requirement, go on the first day, since you are usually the first so the HR people will screen the resumes leniently. Filtering process is fluid and small experience and skills gaps are tolerated but as time progresses and they begin getting lot of resumes or candidates, they become more strict, more choosy and more focused on the resume screening and only let the right candidates in. So be the first.

2. Second tip is make your resume easy to read or scan. Have all the relevant words, skills up front. Incidentally first page should have all the relevant related points regarding the requirement. Write it clearly and preferably in bullet format.

If someone has recommended you, write his/her name on the top of the resume. I have seen this technique work. Once yours truly and my friend while doing training after AeSI degree, went for an infotech walk in. After scanning my resume I was immediately asked to return and told “we will call you, do submit your resume”. While my friend having the similar experience and profile but having only the name of an employee on the resume got the chance to be interviewed. So if you have reference from someone inside the company, mention it its always gets a preference.

So this is what I have learnt from my walk0in that has come my way during my training period. Do tell me yours and what and how you tackled them.

Related post that you might want to read: A practical tip to accelerate your job search

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

This skills has helped me from the training days of NAL to till now. I am glad I was introduced to computers earlier on and this sparked my life long love with computers.

I guess the immediate responsive nature of computers have attracted me. From the time I have worked on, every year I picked up some new skills in it an that in tern fueled the extra passion. When I entered NAL I was proficient in c due to my policy of writing one c program daily in my last semester, from there onward during the NAL days I got a hang on vbscript and VBA, and vb. As I gathered each skills and learnt new tools, this programming bug grew bigger. My majority of the task was on computers in NAL, even when I didn’t have any access to any tools because of license being occupied or system busy, I sat on a computer that had excel and tinkered with it.

This tinkering nature is the one which I will attribute all my learning success. Its this enquiring attitude that has made my life easy now as I accomplish things that might take days but now happen in couple of hours. Learning excel had brought so many benefits.

So take up a tool early on in your AeSI days, if you don’t have access to the big tools like catia, ansys, nastran etc. Don’t worry begin with excel. You will be thanking yourself in the long run. Even you have no PC at hand utilize the cyber cafe pc or any PC that you can but make sure you learn and get a hang of the tool. Use the resource of internet. The excuse how do I do it is no longer valid. Every how is available on the net search. Why do you think I analyzed the results of AeSI since 2002, yes analyzing it was part of my exercise to learn excel. That exercise taught me excel graphs!!! So take up a tool and begin tinkering. Proficiency in a tool is just a matter of hours that you will put in it. So put in some specified amount of time everyday. Be consistent and you will kiss the stars.

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

So when you go out for the interview or training be confident and have, faith in yourself..

True your degree is not recognized as easily as some other but don't let that fact shadow your confidence, make you meek. I have deliberately distorted the names and reference but look at it and you will realize how pathetic the resume writing skills are for the guy who sends it.

If this is the standard of the resume I am sure he will be struggling to get a job for a long time. Today I am shocked but I promise to dissect this resume in weeks time and make his resume more rounded and presntable.

Point wise what are blunders he did.

5 pages resume.

His personal profile is first thing he writes

Objective is the last sentence of the resume

Language he uses in the resume is not professional.

No format or standards followed

I feel so sorry for this guy and bad for myself that even though I am writing on this topic so often in this blog and still there are people in AeSI who aren’t reading any of it. A little while ago someone asked me why I promote this blog on orkut and this is the answer. I don’t want AeSI guys to be so naïve. I don’t want them to be the lowest denominators…… This is bad and what good is your degree if you lack the bare minimum of sense. So guys if you are reading this refer this resource to other AeSI folks. Lets be professional enough to be able to send a resume properly.

View more resume tips

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

This is part 4 of the series. You can read the previous 3 parts here, here and here.

What’s in demand is good but is it enough to get you into the aerospace industry? Training and experience is another factor. After AeSI, it takes at least 2+ months to get a job depending upon the profile of a person, this 2 months figure is based on my informal survey among AeSI people I know of. But the main point is not the two months what you need to do.

Well as stated before; begin your career planning in the beginning of your last semester. This is the time when you need to think where and what you want to be in the booming aerospace industry. You know your strengths. How you can add value to the company that will employee you. Yes you have the skills but are they applicable out of the textbook, here training in NAL, GTRE, HAL and anywhere you can get comes handy. I had mine in NAL and this has increased my skills many fold. It not only rejuvenated my propulsion knowledge but also polished my programming skills and added CAD skills to my repertoire.

Training has two advantage, one it helps you understand what the industry will be like when you are in, you can see that skills are okay but how to handle people and deadlines also come into being. Second thing is that it will make your skills more marketable. A person with catia and hypermesh skills and a person who has worked on catia in a live project is far more attractive to the recruiter.

My friend and I have this theory that if you want to learnt a cad or analysis software. You can do hundred tutorials but you will truly learn the software when you do a real life project. This is the one where you have no guidance and you are on your own and you get to learn the small things that a tutorial and book learning can never mention or show.

So apart from your skills, get trained. It might be in NAL or any other organizations which provide adequate facility for the AeSI people. And you don't have to wait for AeSI’s training call. You can begin this on your own initiative and give yourself a head start. Truly this is one thing that I will recommend every AeSI new graduate. I have written many more posts regarding how to get trained? Or things to consider before getting training do read them.

This series is not about my ranting about what I feel, I want you to take active part in it, suggest your suggestion. Tell us your five points so that AeSI students and graduates are more employable !!!

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

The first two posts can be found here, and here.

Pride in your degree, in your education, and having the right knowledge will take you half way but having the right skills will push the door open for you. So build your skills,

Ideally one should begin building his or her skills in the AeSI. If you are in the last leg of AeSI and 2 semesters away from graduating then it’s high time. To begin with make a beginner’s resume and post it on the jobs website. Along with that begin looking at the skill set that the companies are looking for. Decide the category which is more aligned to your passion or interest.

let me illustrate this with an example from my days in AeSI, when I first registered myself, I began to notice that most of the jobs in aerospace had this three broad categories, design, analysis and programming/performance. At that time all 3 looked promising and I couldn’t decide which one was close to my heart, but then in designing they needed cad tools of which I had no experience and honestly I haven't even seen a catia screen by that time, so I was just still there, in analysis side they called for nastran, ansys but here I noticed mostly they looked for M Techs so i saw little chance for myself here.

The only thing that left was performance tools that require programming. I liked computers and had a little programming experience. So i decided to get myself skilled in this part of the aerospace field. This involved seeing which programming languages were in demand and what companies were looking for and what code and on what they were developing this codes. So i choose c to begin my aerospace study language and made an aim to write two small aerospace related programs per week from then onwards. This way i not only learned c more easily but also enhanced my propulsion knowledge. Pressure and height at certain attitude was one of my first programs.

This technique has helped me when I joined NAL and these skills increased my value and though I joined as project trainee, I was given some good performance programs that I need to debug and update. This not only enhanced my knowledge but also laid the foundation of my love in programming in aerospace.

So one can do the same things, if design is what you have access to then begin now and start delving. By the time you are out you will have the required confidence that one needs? You might begin with catia, solidworks or what ever that fancies you and you can see what’s in demand. But the important thing is begin now. However small you start but begin today and work on your skills. I have lot of materials on beginning solidworks and catia. I hope they will be helpful to you guys and gals to jump start your career.

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

The global aerospace industry is looking at india and china as the engines of growth. So here's the second tip so that you don't left behind. This is the second tip for aesi graduates. Read the first tip here.

Second thing that an aesi graduate should realize is that your strength is your course and the study you did, so be the best in it. By being the best i mean that all the basic questions and topics of flights, propulsion, and aerodynamics should be at your fingertips. While in aesi, don't leave the principle of flights book. Have it as your constant companion. It covers most of the questions that you will face in interviews. So have your basics ready. This is what gururaj also said once.

Being proud of your degree is good but lacking of basis is serious disadvantage. So be strong in them. For a fresher and also for seasoned aesi graduates, the most common interview question will be on his or her favorite subject, so make one subject your favorite. By making i mean, delve into it and have the basics of that subjects in your finger tips,. As a propulsion engineer, mine favorite subject is thermodynamics and i have to be prepared to answer all the basic questions that can come up from this subject.

Don't make a big mistake in this. Capitalize on your strengths How to do this?

3 step plan that i can suggest and i personally use to stay updated in my basics of the subject mentioned above.

Use 30 minutes daily to read an aerospace topic, Read only the basics, like thermodynamics, basic aerodynamics, mach number and all that. Since you will be reading basic so 30 minus is sufficient. ASM folks can read asm subject basics.

Share your knowledge, answer questions in ouraesi and aesi groups. Put some different perspective of the topic you read and discuss of share an interesting or otherwise insight on the things you studied. Use the groups. They are all fellow aesi folks and they will appreciate and learn from it and in turn you will strengthen the topic in your mind.

Play around with an idea and toss it in different direction, apply in the things you see and do during the day. This will fix the data in your mind and your mind will be more receptive the next time you hear a term regarding the topics you read. For example, my most recent topic was torque. So whenever i am seeing things i am relating this topic.

Well this are the steps that one can use to keep his basics strong and keep them from rusting. Use your imagination. Its very powerful tool and if you can use it fairly its can take you higher than any thing you can think.

So to sum up, being prepared is the another thing that an AeSI graduate or student should be doing to catch the aerospace boom! The previous step instilled self confidence and this will show that the confidence is based on solid foundation. So keep your foundation strong!

Please give in your suggestions that i might have missed out in the comments.

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Many big guns of aerospace are setting shops here in India and many have partnering with the one established in India. In short there is lot of buzz in the Indian aerospace industry. So how can the aesi aeronautical engineer, the graduate from aesi make sure that he is part of this action. Here in this series of post i will elaborate on 5 things that an aesi engineer, or aerospace engineer to-be should do so that he shouldn't be left behind.

First of all this goes to everyone of the aesi weather is he graduate or is in the process of being one. Be proud of you degree. AeSI is bad, aesi examination process is not transparent, results don't match the exams, aesi bureaucrats are not supportive, well all this is there but its should remain inside. Once you are outside, its your confidence and the faith in the degree that you have done that you should exhibit. Take my word for it, if you have cleared aesi, then you are one of the best aeronautical engineer in India. Yes that's very true and i know many of the society folks will agree with it.

All we lack in aesi system is the confidence, i got this confidence when i had worked in NAL as a trainee engineer. Here i saw what society has taught me this is where my confidence in knowledge increased. And i am not the only person. Read this piece from anupam goyal, one of my batch mates in aesi. He exhibited similar sentiments when he joined the industry in HAL. Many more are there who will state you this similar thing. So first of all change your attitude. If you are doing aesi seriously, then take pride in it and come out of it with confidence.

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Here are some questions that you need to ask yourself if you are preparing to get training from any other organization including NAL, GTRE etc.
What will you learn from this?
This is the first question that you need to ask yourself. Well paid or unpaid training. Have a positive learning attitude with the whole training thing. By this i mean, do the training for the right reason. It shouldn't be to get a certificate, to get a nice experience column in your resume. This all are the by products and elementary things.

So how to get the maximum out of your training ?
Do the training to prepare yourself for the professional career life ahead, for upgrading your skills to the skills of your chosen industry.

Mine experience in NAL, from both unpaid and paid work was great. The training and the work instilled confidence in me. It showed me the quality of aeronautical knowledge that aesi provided me, and polished and reinforced the basic concepts of aerodynamics and propulsion.

So join as a trainee with this mindset, your attitude should be that i'll develop professionally, whatever be the task, do it in the spirit of learning. Don't be disappointed that you were not given task in catia but in solidworks!!

This is a common misguided thinking trap that people fall into. They join training believing that CATIA is in demand and a work in that will increase your value, well as someone said in the film race, its not the cars who win races, it the driver.

Same goes with CAD tools, unless you exclusively want to be a CAD operator, fretting on any tool is not important. you should have a working knowledge of it and always have an inquiring mind in regards to any tool you are working on. (also read they are just tools)

Do what you have been assigned and learn the things you want to learn separtely. That will help you more than being frustrated over the task or project you have been assigned.

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free
