That's what your skills are?

You can have many, you can have varied and but not all mix well. To cook something successful you have to create the right mix.

Mixing everything and putting them on stove wont produce anything eatable.

The soup you come out with, only gets cooked when you have that fire under you. But the taste and the success of it will depend on the ingredients you put into it.

Similarly in your career, the success and achievements you do is not dependent on the degree, college or stream you choose but on the ingredients that you pick and develop in the process.

Your AMAeSI degree, the stream you choose in section B are just the stove. CATIA, NASTRAN , ANSYS, coding, FORTRAN visual basic, communication etc are all the ingredients that will spice up your career.

So when looking at skills, see them as ingredients.

Look what you want to make or see at the ingredients you have. The work areas can be more than one as well. for example stress
analysis, dynamics of rotating structure, catia designing of components,
3-D modeling and analysis, performance calculations, CFD, technical
publications, programming to create a thermodynamics module, control
system design..........the list can be endless but it all starts with a
personal initiative.

3) Approaching the organization for the correct person at correct time,
with your preference of work area. The candidate should also request for a discussion with the concerned HOD prior to be on-board. This discussion
can channelize and streamline the expectation of the employer and
employee.

Please bear in mind that career planning is not just gathering credentials
and roaming company to company for interviews. Its a chain of strategies which you which needs to be implemented prior to execution.

All the best for your future endeavors !!
Thanks and Regards

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Very encouraging and useful mail for anyone regarding options that AeSI graduates have after AeSI.

Dear AeSI Graduates,

Congratulations to all new AeSI Graduates and I hope they keep up the good work in future. It always advisable for new Graduates whenever they graduate that they try not only newspaper openings but also try all avenues ,sometimes openings are remain unadvertised and if you are able to get in touch through mail or email, you should be able to get better opening than OJT through AeSI. Also don't blindly follow what your fellow Graduate or senior mate is doing in there career. Every case is individual basis and many not be viable for every individual.

Your main stress after AeSI should be to get first job with companies like Airbus,Bangalore, Quest, Infotech, Patni, Satyam, Wipro, TCS as starting point. Try getting into project which are in Aircraft manufacturing sector rather than Research sector unless you have mind set up to be in Research arena in your future career.

The reason why MTech/ME/MS is not advisable in India immediately is that there is no guarantee that you might be ending up in your first job in similar field. Its always advisable to work for 7-8 years after AeSI before venturing into ME/MTech/MSc coursework based on your field of work for those 7-8 years. You will gain professionally better that way.

There is also other side of it based on individual back ground or his ability to pull off scholarship from places like Royal Aeronautical Society,London or AIAA,USA,CASI,canada or family support from India for further studies like MSc/MS in UK/US/Canada/Australia to meet CEng Licensing Academic requirement which is minimum accredited MS/MSc from these countries only. Your experience after MSc is only considered for registration with EC-UK.Usually RAeS pays for full tuition & maintenance fees if you are successful with them in obtaining one of prestigious scholarships. But its on competitive based from applicants across the world since RAeS is present in all 5 continents of the world. There is no harm in trying such option as it gives you chance to succeed. Details about there programme available on www.raes.org.uk

Try first of all for Scholarship options and if that is not possible usual financial support from family or bank in India which is usual practice in 98% cases for Graduates from India.

I hope it helps in your decision making in your future career.

Best wishes

Thanks Bishnujee.

If you have further questions regarding options after AMAeSI, please free free to post them in the comments, I will try to answer them.
Subscribe to AeSI by Email

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

I have not received my final marks list yet. I have seen that you have done many programming languages . I haven't done nothing other than the course. I don't have any proper guidance here in Hyderabad. so please tell me should I learn any soft wares ?.and some of my friends told that we would get an apprentice training letter after completing the course,is it true. And do companies take AeSI fresher? are their jobs for AeSI graduates. I have so many doubts, please give me guidance. hoping that you will send a reply soon

Instead of replying to his question in an individual email I thought its better if I answer them here so others too can join in the discussion.

Please tell me should I learn any softwares ?

By all means learn software, they are the tools of the trade so one shouldn’t be shy in learning them. So what are the software that AeSI graduate should learn. I have already mentioned software tools used by aeronautical engineers list, you can start with these. For computer language please do go ahead and at least have one language under your belt. Here in the post titled SUCHANDSUCH where I elaborated why you should learn a programming language.

If you don’t have access to any of the software tools mentioned and are apprehensive of any programming language then by all means take up excel as this is the most used tool in the engineering domain. This is one of the software that will be very much be a part of your work life so learn it, excel in it.

Some of my friends told that we would get an apprentice training letter after completing the course,is it true

Yes its true, You might want to see the notification on AeSI’s website at aerosocietyindia.com for information in this regards. Moreover having certificates and training before getting a job is always a good thing, They are some of the things that a new graduate of AeSI can highlight in his or her resume apart from the educations. This is also an opportunity when you acquire skills required for the industry.

And do companies take AeSI fresher's?

Yes they do. Just as any other engineering graduate you have a chance to be a in any company. In all aerospace companies that are in India, you will at least find one AeSI engineer. So take heart and go ahead. All you need to get a job after AeSI graduation is confidence+skills. Here’s a list of companies that I have in this blog where I mentioned some of the companies AeSI graduates are working in. Its bit old and need updating, but I am sure it will give you and idea about the spread of AeSI graduates in the Indian and world aerospace industry.

Are there jobs for AeSI graduates?

By all means, jobs are available for AeSI Graduates. You do have the best knowledge, you just need to add on the other skills to get off to a great start. I will recommend reading this series that I had a while back to set yourself to a great start in your career. As I have already sated ideally landing in a job just after your graduations depends on what you do in the your last semester. So read it here.

Well this were some of the answers that I knew answers too, I have barely scratched the surface, I am sure many of senior AeSI graduates will have there own inputs so sing them here in the comments. What do you think? How is the industry receiving AeSI graduates?

What should you do about gaps in your resume?

Subscribe to AeSI by Email

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Its the transition from section A to section B.

From this A to B many things change apart from the letters. Well that's the matter for some another post. For this post I want to focus on the inevitable question that pops up in an AeSI student.

What stream to choose in Section B? I have tackled this question many times here in this blog and was one of my reason to begin the OURAeSI club back in 2002!

And today I want to point you to one paragraph from Trent, where he correctly puts the words to my feeling on this matter.

Similarly, I should have ignored any and all advice relating to what major you should or shouldn’t have if you want to earn a good income. Earning a good income relies much more on building diverse and marketable skills, not what you majored in - what’s actually important is that you completed a degree and learned some generally useful skills along the way.

Yes this is true and as I see my career and careers of my friends it feels so true. After all being in the industry is all about the skills that you possess, the skills that you accumulate, so when you are at this stage of the AeSI just choose that feels close to your passion and what you enjoy doing. That will be a correct choice. Don't base it on other's opinion or others choices or what others are doing or saying.

Seniors reading this please share your views regarding this in the comments.

You might want to read: What stream to choose in section B? and “I want to work in my core field”

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

He was into it for the last 7 days and has finally got it completed. Here I present 4 things that I learnt from all this process.

1. Don't assume. Don’t assume what the problem is, state it test it and get to the bottom of it. Don’t assume, search for facts. if you have a theory test it than say it. Do more than you think. Think and test. Not think and think.

2. First capture the big picture then delve into the details. Details are important but before going into the the details get the frame ready. see the big picture. Move back and see the whole as a problem. Set your frame right. Determine your north and south then after you have verified that you are heading the right direction then you should fine tune and get into details.

3. Keep your methods right the results will follow. Have your tools ready. Learn and set up the processes rights results will follow. Pause and setup the ground work. If your base is strong enough, things will all fall in place. So do the ground work and see that your preliminary investigation is right and the setup you have setup is based on facts not assumptions.

4. Absorb the problem first before judging or getting into the detail. Same as the big picture. Absorb the problem than spit out your judgment. Spend time understanding the problem. Don’t state your opinions. its better to test them. Leave the judging to the judges… you just carry on small tests and experiments and draw conclusions from them. Test everything don’t assume.

Bonus : Use bubble sort method to solve problems. From big to small. Eliminate from Big to small. More on this sometimes latter

Well this were some of things that came to mind as I saw my friend at the office finally crack the debugging nut that he was given. He was pleased and I thing many of this approach we can use to solve many of our problems.

Related : Are you seeing the big picture?

For the exam students : How I cleared my Workshop technology exams?

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

As i peek out of my window,I can see the pecks of rains running down illuminated by the street light.

This reminds of the matches that are to be played between India and Australia and one thing that Australian team emanates is being consistent.

One lesson that I draw from them is to be consistent. Consistent in your performance. How can one become consistent in performance. Even the Indian cricket team fails to do that but look at the Australians. they are the most consistent cricket team of the world. Consistent in winning, day after day, match after match. How do they do that ? what helps them to beat the odds, what makes the team to deliver so consistently?

I think I know apart of the answer. some came to me as I was reading and the other came by following Shane Waugh's team of IPL. He lead the Rajasthan royals to victory and did very impressive job building a team of consistent players.

So what are the factors that we can apply in our life to be consistently productive and efficient.

The whole idea of consistency does not depend on being perfect but on being regular. Lets say I want to be consistent in posting to this blog. Sometimes I post 7 articles a week and in some I barely manage 2. Its not consistency. So to be more productive and consistent in my posting. I have lowered my bar and now I have made a pact with my self that I will post at least 5 articles per week. So that amounts to one post for each weekday.

Setting this limit and now all I have to do is write one post a day and if I do this, I know I will be consistent.

Same can be applied to your studies. As mentioned in this tips for study, commit to your mind that you will study for at least one hour a day. This is the minimum that you will put in no matter what and if you follow it, you will see that everyday you are making more progress. In my AeSI days I saw that someday I was ultra productive and did 8 hours of study and on some days I barely opened my books. What was lacking was consistency. so I set a minimum 1 hour of study limit and that did wonders. when I knew I have to study one hour, I out performed my previous weekly average. Moreover as time went I slowly and steady increased my minimum bar.

Same happened when I had wanted to brush up my skills, I did set a 30 mins limit for practicing Nastran after my regular work at NAL and I quickly mastered it.

The secret of consistency is regularity, setting up your minimum effort and then doing it no matter what.

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Hope u will guide me as per your experience..........

Now what can I advice him? I don’t have all the answers. If you are reading this please share your opinion in comments.

See just working on aerodynamic calculation is not enough. when you are in training know you goal. Ultimately its all for the job. So have a clear goal while entering into the training phase. Know what kind of work you want to do? or at least have an idea of the work you will like. Pick up software tools, software skills that might be needed and most of all have your resume uploaded in two of the popular job portals.

So my practical advice to him will be these 3 points.

He still has time so take stock and decide what you want from training? why you are doing it. Does the training helps in the work he intends to do? Answer this honestly.

Secondly make a resume. Post it on at least two job portals. Register and fill in all the details make them visible. And then wait for the job listing to come to you. See what jobs interests you. if something is good. follow through. This exercise will help you see what skills are needed and what your current resume calls for. So take stock and build those skills and aim for that job.

Learn some software. They are necessary. I know I always say that software's are just tools, but still software is one of the reason AeSI folks go for training. Yes even if you choose no design or analysis job you need to learn ms office especially excel and word. So learn them.

Don't make any excuse... its your career you have to ride it to the destination!!!! Well this are 3 things I will tell an AeSI guy doing training. What is your opinion?

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

The tips were very useful and among the many tip , one of them was "Stay abreast of new developments in your field....."

So how do I stayed abreast to the new developments in your field. I want to tackle this topic today.

While i was in AeSI, the resources were very limited, net access was 80 rs per hour at the cyber cafe and speeds were dismal and penetration of Indian aerospace news was nothing to talk about. But then also there were this 3 sites that i always visited to keep myself updated in what's happening in aerospace. Now my repertoire of sites has increased many fold but this sites are still relevant and are still present in my browsers address bar.

So here they are.

NAL's pasteborad.

This is only primary source that i had back then that covered indian aerospace industry. It mainly talked about NAL but also covered the various aerospace conference, events that happened in indian aerospace industry. So this was my most visited site in 1999 and early 2000. It still is as you get to know what NAL, my first place where i worked is doing. Read the development of saras, RTA, hansa and many other indian stories here. Now of course we have indianaeronews blog that religiously follows and inform us of the recent stories happening in indian aerospace.

www.NASA.gov was the next site the i regularly visited back them, now my visit to this site are quite less but back then. It excited me and i remember after every visit from cyber cafe i came with abundant enthusiasm about aerospace and at the new technology that NASA is working. As my roommates will vouch, this was only thing i talked about during those time. It was really exciting and today though my visits have decreased but i know, as i have already mentioned here, NASA is the ultimate destination for any aerospace engineer. And for those who don't know, an AeSI'ian among us is already working in NASA.

Science at NASA
Apart from the main site of NASA, the other site that i visited was its sister site named sciece.nasa.gov. It only talked about technology, about the stuff that is getting made or done. It was another source of excitement for me and i still visit this site to know about what's happening. What new material is being developed. How people will live on mars and how NASA is preparing for it....

So this are the 3 sites that made my days back when i was in AeSI. So tell me what are your aerospace sites that you visit to stay abreast in aerospace? What site you hang out to get to know what's happening in aerospace industry.

As mentioned earlier you can stay abreast with indian aerospace industry by following IndianAeroNews blog.

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Was waiting for it for long. And finally fully understood the blog article that I read at youth curry. In that post, the blogger expresses her Kung Fu Panda advice. Do read it.

The one that I believe applies most to all of AeSI'ians is this one.

And this is especially relevant at a time when we are all on the quest for the Holy Grail. We believe that joining the right college, the right course or the right company is the secret ingredient which will spice up our soup - our careers, our lives.

The truth is, it's all about what you believe. The moment you join an IIT or an IIM you start believing,"Hey I am really really good". You get the confidence to take on the world, the chutzpah to say,"The world is my oyster".

Clearing these super tough exams is like running a lawnmower through your own mental garden. It crushes the weeds of self doubt and self pity which we've allowed to grow.

Exam or no exam, you can choose to yank out those weeds. Then look the guys who think they know better in the eye and declare,"My soup is as kick-ass as yours."

As she rightly points out. Its what we believe that matters ultimately. IIT, IIM only gives us that belief and self confidence. Many AeSI folks have said they are the best when they clear AeSI, which all you know is the toughest course on earth ( I know some will disagree?). Anyway believe in your degree, believe in yourself and crush those weeds of doubt and self pity!!!

MIND your language?

Google's advice to students

"I want to work in my core field?" do you suffer from this

Career advice 2008 - a presentation

Actions that will take your career ahead.

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Loved the post so just wanted to share it with all of you. Some of the tips are relevant for all the aesi graduates. I am posting here the one that i liked the most.

...communication skills. Marshalling and understanding the available evidence isn't useful unless you can effectively communicate your conclusions.

... team players. Virtually every project at Google is run by a small team. People need to work well together and perform up to the team's expectations.

... passion and leadership. This could be professional or in other life experiences: learning languages or saving forests, for example. The main thing, to paraphrase Mr. Drucker, is to be motivated by a sense of importance about what you do.

And the best part is

Keep on challenging yourself, because learning doesn't end with graduation. In fact, in the real world, while the answers to the odd-numbered problems are not in the back of the textbook, the tests are all open book, and your success is inexorably determined by the lessons you glean from the free market. Learning, it turns out, is a lifelong major.

What are your thoughts on this? What more do you want to add to this? When asked why is he not joining a particular vacancy. his reply was "I want to work in my core field?"

What is core field? Your core field is not propulsion or avionics or aerodynamics! When you begin your career specialist is not demanded. Specialist is not what company looks for in a fresher. For someone starting out you need to be generalist, a person who can do multiple things, a person who is adoptable. A person who can fit the work he his assigned to from time to time. This is one general quality that freshers are taken for.

They look for a lump of mud, un-curved and un-molded but soft and of quality. Its the job that you get that molds you, your inherent interest and the core fields generally comes out when you are in the job.

So how does this apply to aesi graduates?

If you have taken more than 4+ years in getting your degree then the first priority for that guy is to get appointed as soon as possible, or else he will need to explain lot of things. The training in NAL or GTRE, ADA or any other organization fills this gap. If you have done training, then not only your confidence is higher but you also you are perceived better qualified by the would-be employer.

You know aesi puts you at the disadvantage of people not knowing about it, so why put yourself in more disadvantage, start early. Begin with a broad category, a broad title. Unless you are a PHD, there's no use of a core specialist. And not taking a training or low paying job just because its not related your core is simply stupid. So don't make that mistake.

Do you feel the same way or do you think core is what you get in first? what else will you advise, do comment.

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Periodically check, reassess, extend, or modify goals.

Periodically access your goals, i like the system of my friend, his system of access is quarterly. He has divided the year in 3 months chunks. The first 3 months he strides to increase his skills. Get extra training and acquiring a new skill, the next 3 month he allots for the betterment of the existing skills he has and The next 3 months on the betterment of his communication skills and the last 3 months he devotes to read lot of he stuff on his chosen filed. Get this or your own assessment system in tune so you can measure yourself objectively.

Keep your resume current.

Even though you are not looking for a job, keeping the resume current means you are looking at the job skills that is being sought in the market and this help you to see what are the areas you need to work on.

Remain active in a professional society that represents your discipline, such as AIAA,AeSI

Remaining active in a professional society not only gives you a chance to network but to acquire social and communication skills that cannot be taught or learnt from textbooks.

Establish and maintain professional contacts.

Use groups like ouraesi, aeronautical society of India, http://ouraesi.ning.com.
