From importing
cordinates to excel program to using excel to plot curves in catia, I
have done so many thing with it. Now I am fairly confident in this
software and know many things in that software from basic formulaes to
advance stuff. From simple macros to vba programming.
But all this I didn't learn in a day, a week, a month or even a year.
This stuff I have learnt over the years. I am still learning.
The point being, all softwares are huge. One can never know, learn,
and master them in some short period of time. You need to give it
time. So when you begin learning catia, nastran, or ansys, give
yourself ample time and if possible start early.
Fix a schedule with minimum no of hours of practice and then stick to
it consistently for a considerable lengh of time. This is the essense
of being a pro in any field.
Read more about developing software skills by clicking http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=tools
Love reading this, then subscribe it via email or rss by clicking http://feeds.feedburner.com/myaesi

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Doing the same thing for
this long had made it a habit. So what have I learnt from this.
Show up
Yes everyday I showed up. Took the laptop out and just started. Never
new in advance what I will write but just began. This created the
posts that you all are reading and hopefully gaining something.
So start showing up to whatever goal you have setup. If your aim is to
get good marks, then show up and stick to your routine. If you aim is
to learn catia, ansys etc. show up. Switch on the software and begin
tinkering. If you want a productive training, then show up everyday,
consistently.
Showing up is so simple yet how few times we use it. I have been
blogging on this blog since 2004 and this is the first year that I
have really taken an extra effort to be consitent in posting. So it
was big lesson for me.
As I said earlier, since lot of travel is involved in October, so
posting rate might suffer. But rest assured that I will be writing
everyday and posts will flash only when I have the opportunity to
connect to the Internet.
By the way read earlier posts by visiting my-aesi.blogspot.com

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

They are the suggestions from the experience and environment
that I have been for the last couple of years.
If you are interested in CAD, then shun catia, overlook solidworks,
take up unigraphics. That's the future. That's what aerospace industry
is using.
If you are interested in analysis, make ANSYS you vehicle of choice.
Start tinkering, and learning about it from today.
Well that's it nothing fancy. Not many choices, but just two specific
softwares to choose from.
Choose one today and begin devoting one hour each day on it for the
next two year, and you will not have to worry about job or career
ever! The
more you take, the more are your chances of getting that perfect shot.
For some it will come at the 10th shot, or the 100th or beyond.
But what is important is taking shots. Same way the best way to learn
and perfect any cae software like catia, nastran, ansys etc is take a
lot of shot at them. Do them again and again and again and again.
Repeat a truss analysis, repeat a compresseor blade model. Don't just
stop but take action and take as many shot as you can.
The beauty about the digital camera is that you don't have to worry
about the reel, the developing. Same way, the cad and analysis tools
help you in giving you a virtual model or products, thus enabling you
to manipulate it to your hearts content.
So with minimum cost and fuss, you learn a lot. So when doing the next
session in ansys or catia, do become a photographer and take lots of
shots.
Read more about how to learn cae software effectively by clicking on
the following link http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=learn+analysis+software
Subscribe to myaesi via email or rss by visiting this link http://feeds.feedburner.com/myaesi

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Well If you are then that's a
waste of time, my friend. In truth you will never ever get the right
answer.
The correct choice or the right answer is an illusion.
The faster you understand this the better you will be.
I have passed section A, which stream to choose for section B? There's
no right answer to it.
I passed AeSI, but I don't have 60%. Should I continue on or redo the
exams? There's no correct choice.
Should I go for higher studies or do I take a job? There's no right
answer.
Which field should I go, design or analysis? There's no right answer.
Which software tool should I take up, catia or solidworks? There's no
right answer!
At one point or the other you will face this or similar questions in
your jouney of AeSI, they will creep in. You will ponder over them,
ask many people, contact seniors for advice and each answer will
settle you deep into the question and you will search for the right
answer.
But let me tell you, there's no right answer. Do what you feel that is
correct at that time. That's the important thing. Staying in the
vortex of your questions won't take you anywhere. Just listen to heart
and follow it.
That's the best you can do instead of waiting for the right answer!
What are your thoughts on this, do comment.
Read more about this questions by searching them on http://my-aesi.blogspot.com
Subscribe via email or google reader by visiting http://feeds.feedburner.com/myaesi

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

You don't go to
wonderla or fun city and just sit outside.
You go there to enjoy, to have the experience. So why is it different
for the training?
I see lot of aesi graduates and students attending training in NAL,ADA
etc, and just doing that!
They show lot of initiative, courage and creativity to get in, but
once they are in, they just sleep or sit outside!
Why?
Training is like a theme park, where you choose the rides and
experiences you want. No one will handfeed you, or give you tailor
made experience in catia or any other tool, you have to find the
opportunities and learn.
Once you are in, resolve to get the correct technical exposure.
Surround yourself with books, people and substances that lifts you
towards your career goals. He is not learning anything new!
I don't know about him but I see an opportunity there. I see time that
he can utilize to learn whatever he wants to but all he does the same
repeatative job at the same slow pace.
He is using excel and is doing the same kind of work for a year now
but he is poor in excel, by now he would have been fluent in that tool
but since excel is everywhere he disregards it. Shuns it. Hates it.
He is ignorant of simple if formula and of simple techniques of excel.
If this is attitude he approaches his work he will remain in the same
rut till he quits.
Its not what you do that will teach you but how you do something?
Opportunities don't come to ideal work, it springs from the laps of
challenging work.
So this is what I suggested him.
1. Automate your repeatative work.
2. Do the work at a faster pace.
3. Utilize the remaining time doing small experiments in excel.
4. Read more about the tool you are using.
5. Aim to be an expert in it.
6. No tool is unimportant.
7. Your value is not it the number of tools you know but in the things
you can do with the tools you know.
I wish I could do some more for him. But I know he is the one who has
to walk. All we, as external person, can do is point him the right way.
As always I am curious what do you think?
Read more tips on learning tools like catia, nastran ansys etc. at http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=tools

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Learn the methodology and
process not the tool. Learn why something is happening than how.
Delve deeper in different boundary conditions and domains than just
blindly applying them repeatedly on models. Understand the difference
and significance of different elements before choosing one over the
other. Understand the different ways of loft before applying it in a
cad model.
It's very easy to loose sight of wood for the trees. I used the same
analogy to learning catia, solidworks, unigraphics, ansys , and
nastran etc.
I laid out steps that one can take so that even without a real life
example, one can accelerate one's learning of a cad or cae tool.
Here in this post I will discuss why it works?
Why riding on real roads really work?
1. It puts you out of the leisure zone.
2. It presents you unexpected turns.
3. It puts you on the real test.
4. It focuses you not on results but on the process.
5. It presents the situation where you need to apply your knowledge at
every turn.

Same applies for learning a tool. Be it a cad tool like catia,
solidworks or unigraphics or be it an analysis software like ansys,
nastran, fluent etc.
The main advantage is that you disregard the nonsense, superficial
stuff and do the things that's essential and important.
Changing gears at every corner is a skill that one learns when he is
on a real road facing real traffic, same way, while doing a software
with real world examples one learns of different constraints that
never appears while practising a tutorial. And this constraints and
limitations enables you to think and solve the assignments in creative
ways.
So next time you sit to learn a software tool, shun the off repeated
tutorial. Challenge yourself to make something that you can share with
others. Challenge yourself to make something that others will find
usefull. And begin making it. This will teach you 100 times more than
following the steps of 100 tutorials!!
Try it!
Read the previous post related to learning software tools by clicking
on the following link http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=tools

Subscribe to my-aesi with this link http://feeds.feedburner.com/myaesi

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

It's 100% true
for learning to drive a motorbike. And more so for all the software
tools.
Until and unless you are working on a real project you won't learn the
tool. You may know how to use it but driving on the highway, with real
traffic is the place which will hone your skills as a driver and in
the same way on a tool.
But tutorials is what I have, I hear you say. Well then create some
mini challenges. Challenges to produce something worth sharing. Here's
few idea for anyone learning a cad (catia, solidworks, unigraphics
etc) program.
1. Select a place in your house, let's say the bathroom and create all
the bathroom assessories that you see in it in your chosen cad
program. Design from start to finish and present 2d drawing just ready
to be manufactured. Design with an intention of sharing all your model
and cad drawing sheets with the world. Post them online. Let that be
the real project you are working for.
2. Design a bicycle from scratch. Measure one and assemble a whole
unit in your chosen cad program. Make drawing sheets which enables
someone with the drawing to built the bicycle from ground up.
Well I can go on but I will stop here and let you decide how you want
to create your own challenge.
The key thing in this whole exercise is your commitment to share your
results. When you design and cad model with that intention, you will
be in the very state of mind that actual designers are. It's just like
riding on a real road.
In my next post, I will discuss why this method works and things to
remember while doing this kind of exercises.

Read more tools related stuff by clicking the below link
http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=tools
Enjoy my-aesi in rss or email by clicking on this link
http://feeds.feedburner.com/myaesi

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

The courses are on fem, project management and many other cfd,
and engineering related topics. The courses mostly deal with theory
and strengthing concepts!!
Second short term courses are from MSRSAS. They come up once a year
and are more inclined towards tools like Catia, unigraphics, ansys,
nastran, fluent etc. !!
Right now my Internet access is next to nothing, so I won't be able to
offer any direct link to both of this. But google it, google still is
as good as it was in finding things. :)

Well this two were the one I knew and had some practical knowledge
about. And I know from personal experience, it's a
term which will pop it's head in all the advice you get when you are
in your last semester.
Take initiative. Show initiative. Initiate something. This terms are
all too familiar. So how can you as an aesi student show initiatives.
1. Participate in classes, ask questions.
2. Give free lectures on what know.
3. Teach what you have learnt.
4. Learn a programming language.
5. Read on wide range of subjects.
6. Join and actively participate in Internet forums.
7. Organize events in local school, college, and community.
8. Create presentations on things you have studied and post them for
people to see it.
9. Create online asset. Like Models of catia, scripts for ansys.
Shortcut list for excel.
10.

Ten is intentionally left blank for you to fill. The list is just an
indicator. So which one should you use? Is catia v15 better to catia
v10, or msc nastran is better than nx nastran?
I have seen students of aesi fret over version for days. They just
wait for the latest version without begining. They will wait 30 days
in the hope of laying hands on catia v15 than begining with catia v10
that is already installed.
That is wrong strategy. Begin with whatever version you have. In fact
starting with a lower version is better.
Newer version are always invariably easier to use, easier to work
with. And they have layers of abstruction to the end task, hiding
important details that might enable you to learn the process behind
the model.
GUI improves most in the latest version but you aren't learning a cad
or cae tool to judge a beauty content. You want to learn it to enable
you do the design and analysis.
So if you want to learn a software, begin with the version you have.
Lower the version, the more opportunities you have to understand the
process. Lower the version, the higher the chance of making human
errors, mistakes and thus higher the chances to learn. The more
mistakes you make, the faster you will learn!!
So start today. Start now with whatever version you have!!
Be educated not trained!! :)
Read all posts regarding software learning by following this link.
Don't forget to use the new search functionality in the blog!!

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Though I
mentioned three specific softwares but they are certainly not the only
one used in the industry.
Those 3 were the softwares that I will take up if I were a fresh AeSI
graduate today.
Every organisation uses many different softwares. Even CAD, CAE
softwares vary from department to department. And these softwares also
change with each year.
I have seen catia replacing unigraphics and again next year catia
replaced by a brand new cad program in my department. So don't fret
about the softwares too much. They change like governments!
Start with whatever options that are available to you. But be
consistent. Consistent in putting in your time, consistent in sitting
with the software every day. Consistent in learning the tool.
Always remember, no matter what software you use, study or practise,
It's YOU who will matter ultimately in your design and analysis.
Softwares are just the tools that enable you to weive the magic!

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

While doing hard stuff enables you to learn new things,
helps you keep active and help you to challenge yourself.
So always mix hard and soft stuff. Have hard and easy stuff in your
life. A healthy dose of both is essential. They will increase and
perpetuate your knowledge. So how do you apply this in your studies,
training, and job.
In studies always make sure you are studying something new everyday
and revising something that has been studied. Revising is easy just
rehearse what you have learnt in the previous day. This mixes the
whole routine and helps you get more out of your study time.
In training, the same core principle applies, add new skill and
explore the already known skills. If its catia, then pracitise the
same old loft but find out about the cloud point import. Similarly in
hypermesh do Old and new stuff together. This will help you get the
best of the software. And learning will be much more rounded.
In job don't remain stagnant, stir things up weekly, make a
presentaion, develop a company specific tool and basically take
initiative at new things while contributimg towards the daily work
assignment
So mixing hard and soft has advantages and if applied inteligently can
earn you successful degree, fruitful training and a sparkling career.

For reading more tips on career do click the following links.
Http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=career
Http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=catia
Http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=training

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Reading and learning shouldn't be the bulk of it. You have to make sure you get to the basic design stage as fast as you can.

Begin delivering.
When I began learning solid works, I was playing by making cubes, glass, bowl etc but as soon as I got the sense of the things. I went straight to my design team member and asked him to give me a real life data for me to play around.

He was generous and he gave the coordinates of a centrifugal compressor he cad modelled. And I began cad modelling a real life compressor model. Had lot of hiccups on the way but was finally pleased with what I made. On hindsight, I know that my approach of getting to play with solid works as fast as possible was the trick that propelled me latter to be a part of the design team of

so whats the take away in all this..
Set a minimum amount of time that you will just do the exploration. Make this commitment before you begin on a software. Once you have fixed a time. then half it and carry on with this constrained target. Once you complete the knowing the software. Jump into to play with some real thing. if its catia, get your hands dirty of some real project, if its hypermesh, get a real life model to mesh.

This is the best way to accelerate your CAE tool learning. Nothing will teach you better than working on some real problem. No tutorial will stretch you that a real problem at hand can. So if you are sitting to learning a new CAD tool like catia, solid works, ANSYS or nastran, just remember to get the software playable as fast as possible.

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

In this post, I will
describe what I do when I begin learning a new language or new
software tool.
The first stage is being a sponge, I read, listen and see each and
every material data I get about the tool or the language. I do not
understand everything but I make it's point that I ran it through my
mind once.
During this phase I read, I get the software do what I understand, If
I don't understand, I read, seek other sources and again sit with the
software. This iteration and exploration continues. Once I feel i am
bored with and covered everything there is to read, I get to the
softwate and this begins the curiosity stage.
Here I am just curious and I poke around, any questions that comes to
mind I try, try it then and there. If I learnt one technique, I try to
apply it in more than one way that I know it can be used. If I learn a
function, I try all the possible limits of that to see what happens.
Most of the exploration happens because I ask what will happen if I do
this.
After this stage I ask for help, I get to see the people who are using
this software, if they are not available, I get some tutorials and
releigiously do them step by step. Once I complete the one tutorial I
don't jump on to the next tutorial but instead begin my poking and
exploration on the model or the program I just developed. Twisting,
tweaking and getting all sort of stuff out of the tutorials. I try
random big small values in all the tutorilas inputs , vary and
compltely ignore the few steps and see what happens.
This is the stage when maximum learning happens.
So these are the 3 stages, I have Learnt all the software I know!!
Hope similar a slight midification of this techniques will work for
you when take on to learn catia or any other cae software!!!
Visit http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=catia
for catia related material on this blog.

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

So this is the post to answer
that question.
Any language will do as long as you can use it to accomplish your
daily tasks. I am not advocating that by learning a programming
language , everyone will begin to develop production level software,
all I am saying is learn to program so that you are able to automate
some of your repeated and sandry tasks and work more effecienly!!
So that's it. Learn programming to make yourself effecient, and
productive.
You might consider matlab, vba, fortran, c, and autohotkey!!
All of them had their own advantage and disadvantages.
For example matlab is the easiest one to program and it's ability to
plot easily is a huge advantage. While the disadvantage is you need
matlab to be installed, you need the full software license to begin.
Whereas VBA or visual basic for application is always available on all
windows systems. It comes with ms office, catia, solidworks and all
kind of windows based softwares. So you will find it much easier to
get hold of. The disadvantage is that it's limited to windows pc's.
Fortran and C are real programming languages and they have the
advantage of getting free compilers on the net. They offer much more
flexibilty on what you can program. But the disadvantage is you have
to learn the language well and you need a good amount of motivation to
program something productive out of them.
Autohotkey. Well, if all you looking is to have a way to automate
windows, get yourself autohotkey. It's a tool that will help you
automate your day to day windows task. It's easy, quick and powerful
for automation of windows. Only disadvantage is you can only use it in
windows system.
I hope, I have wetted your appetite on some of the programming
languages that you can consider.
Have a look on the programming related posts that I have written so
far by clicking the following link
Http://www.my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=programming

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free
