Reading and learning shouldn't be the bulk of it. You have to make sure you get to the basic design stage as fast as you can.

Begin delivering.
When I began learning solid works, I was playing by making cubes, glass, bowl etc but as soon as I got the sense of the things. I went straight to my design team member and asked him to give me a real life data for me to play around.

He was generous and he gave the coordinates of a centrifugal compressor he cad modelled. And I began cad modelling a real life compressor model. Had lot of hiccups on the way but was finally pleased with what I made. On hindsight, I know that my approach of getting to play with solid works as fast as possible was the trick that propelled me latter to be a part of the design team of

so whats the take away in all this..
Set a minimum amount of time that you will just do the exploration. Make this commitment before you begin on a software. Once you have fixed a time. then half it and carry on with this constrained target. Once you complete the knowing the software. Jump into to play with some real thing. if its catia, get your hands dirty of some real project, if its hypermesh, get a real life model to mesh.

This is the best way to accelerate your CAE tool learning. Nothing will teach you better than working on some real problem. No tutorial will stretch you that a real problem at hand can. So if you are sitting to learning a new CAD tool like catia, solid works, ANSYS or nastran, just remember to get the software playable as fast as possible.

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Hope u will guide me as per your experience..........

Now what can I advice him? I don’t have all the answers. If you are reading this please share your opinion in comments.

See just working on aerodynamic calculation is not enough. when you are in training know you goal. Ultimately its all for the job. So have a clear goal while entering into the training phase. Know what kind of work you want to do? or at least have an idea of the work you will like. Pick up software tools, software skills that might be needed and most of all have your resume uploaded in two of the popular job portals.

So my practical advice to him will be these 3 points.

He still has time so take stock and decide what you want from training? why you are doing it. Does the training helps in the work he intends to do? Answer this honestly.

Secondly make a resume. Post it on at least two job portals. Register and fill in all the details make them visible. And then wait for the job listing to come to you. See what jobs interests you. if something is good. follow through. This exercise will help you see what skills are needed and what your current resume calls for. So take stock and build those skills and aim for that job.

Learn some software. They are necessary. I know I always say that software's are just tools, but still software is one of the reason AeSI folks go for training. Yes even if you choose no design or analysis job you need to learn ms office especially excel and word. So learn them.

Don't make any excuse... its your career you have to ride it to the destination!!!! Well this are 3 things I will tell an AeSI guy doing training. What is your opinion?

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

The technique that has enabled me to accelerate my learning of design and analysis software at NAL. This is the same technique that I use now as I play with Photoshop.

The concept is simple. Cranking. Cranking means just getting in the software and get started and getting the brain to produce something. you don’t need to have a clear goal or product to build but all you are doing is trying out the tools and just making your fingers move.

Now when I was in NAL after the initial euphoria about the software I was learning, it always happened that I lost the spark and no matter what I do. I was stuck. I felt dis-interested in the software.

so this is is an effective technique if you are learning any CAD or analysis program,m. Its a technique that you can apply to get started and to create that you want. Not only will you learn a thing or two new but also enjoy and see how your brain is producing results when you just cranked it up..

This is like the warning of the jet engine that happens when its still on the runway.. It doesn't do anything useful but allows the pilot to check all the system and at the signal of the air traffic controller ... and the throttled is pushed... the engine roars to its power and pushes everyone up..

Same way this techniques of just sitting and opening up catia, or nastran and begin drawing designing or meshing anything that takes your fancy will help you learn more than 100 tutorials that you might have done..

As you progress. Think what is going on but keep the mouse moving, explore, try this menu, that menu, this option that option and see the tasks that you have never done. All this will not a waste as you will discover some gems in the quest and even if the final thing that you came out isn't what you waned but then your mind will be more ready to produce a thing that you want...

try it!!!

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

This is the picture of olympic statium that is built in beijing for the olympic 2008. What's common in 2008 Beijing Olympics Stadium and aerospace?

Isn't it majestic. But hey what is it doing here in the blog for aerospace professionals of aesi?

We, as aerospace professional you know that Boeing , airbus and all aircrafts are being made and crafted by the help of CATIA. So is this stadium. Yes the 2008 Beijing Olympics Stadium was developed using CATIA advanced 3D model-based design-to-manufacture solutions.

Great na!! have you created something great like this in CATIA. He mentioned they are good but for him the computer based catia tutorials are nice but he needs more than that. He needs to have a reference book. This is what he is lacking right now. Having a book he says add an advantage that even if your are not doing the tutorial on the computer you can just browse it at bed time or free time and pick one or two things. He is quite right and i think this also makes the learning more effective and gels with the 5 techniques for accelerating self learning of catia.

That conversation with him promted me to check out some books on catia that are available in india, so i did a quick book search on "CATIA books, INDIA" this is what i found.

Astronomical book prices!!!

Catia Reference Guide by author Carman Paul published by OnWord Pre is sold at a price of Rs.6400 That expensive by any standards.

Another one by the same author "Inside catia with cdrom", had a similar price tag of Rs 6102. Others were at the price of Rs 4800.

While only one book came under 500 rupees. Below is the link of the only CATIA book that is available under 500 rupees. I think this book is affordable and priced better for students.

Catia for engineers and designer V5r15

Its available in landmark book stores and if you are comfortable buying online Rediff is selling this book with free shopping. And doing a little search on the book i found that this book contains

· Detailed explanation of CATIA V5R15 commands and tools
· More than 35 real-world mechanical engineering designs as tutorials and projects with step-by-step explanation
· Emphasis on Why and How with explanation
· Tips and Notes throughout the textbook
· 624 pages with heavily illustrated text
· Self-evaluation tests and Exercises at the end of each chapter

Prefer reading few chapters of the book before buying it then do check this link. This site has few chapters avilable for free as PDF ebooks. I just download one small ebook from the link aboveand it was a 46 pages! Great! I think you should check this site if you are looking for a good catia ebook.

If you are looking for CATIA models to practice then look at this link. Set it in your mentality CATIA or any CAD program is simple. For god sake you are an aerospace engineer or going to become one. so if you have the brains to do that you definetely have the skills to take on CATIA on self learning basis.

#2 Begin in small steps, small models. Don't go for fuselage, compressor or the whole assembly unit. Begin with making a glass, a bowl , a brick, a rod, a tapering rod. Small steps will show you the small features that will make big things latter on. Do as many of this small step as you want. The more you do it the more it will be easy for you to do the big things.

#3 Basically CATIA or any other CAD program like solidworks is just a mathematical tool, see how they do the things they are doing> IF you are doing something, try to see how the program is calculating and does this things. This simple yet powerful observation will teach you more about catia , solidworks than any text books that you might read.

#4 Now when these small step are done. Take up some good tutorials and do them one by one.

#5. Doing tutorial, don't run through them. Here's one way that i have found most productive in terms of learning any CAD tool including CATIA or Solidworks. Complete the step by step tutorial. Once its complete, pat yourself for the job well done. Now there are 2 things, review the step you followed and then keep quite. Don't think about the tutorial any more. After sometime, maybe an hour or two or maybe more come back. Do the same tutorial but this time don't see the steps at all. If you are stuck, don't get into the tutorial. Just improvise and do what you think most suits it. Do it and i bet you you will accelerate your CAD skills must faster than any other techniques.

So these are some of the tips that i have gathered from my experience on working on CATIA, Solidworks and unigraphics.

Well this were some of the tips and now if you want some CATIA tutorials, these are some links that might help you.

What is catia?
Catia Video tutorials
Solidworks CAD video tutorials
Catia vs Solidworks
EDST launches catiaa and enovia training center
Where can i learn NASTRAN and CATIA
What is NASTRAN?

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

I used Google trend and here are the results that Google presented me. Google Trends charts how often a particular search term is entered relative the total search volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages. This are results compiled from the search volumes done at google. Since pretty much everyone is using google so this will reflect the true industry usage of the CAD tools in india.

My first trial was with catia vs solidoworks, the softwares that i mostly used in NAL. But then i broadened the search to include two more CAD tools that i have heard we use in india. So the trial with Catia, solidwoks, unigraphics and pro/e was done.

As i already knew, CATIA was the hands on winner. With solidworks trailing as a distant second, followed by unigraphics and pro/e. As you can see from the picture pro/e is loosing the touch, there is no green line.

Pls note: The picture is drawn realtime. My analysis is based on what i am seeing now

One of the interesting things to note is even though CATIA is the most searched but solidworks beats catia at the news reference volumes. That is solidworks generated more news. This analysis was done only for the year 2008 and for indian region. The more news generaion of soliworks might be an indication how solidworks is gearing up to catch up. with catia in india.

In solidworks vs catia contest, Karnataka was the biggest user followed by Gujrat (yes even i had to think about it) and Tamil Nadu came third. Of all the subregions, Tamil Nadu has more solidworks volume, pointing that more solidworks job available in Tamil Nadu.

In terms of city, its not Bangalore which tops the chart, its Pune, yes its not surprising as so many automotive and now aerospace firms are using CATIA there. Second city was Bangalore followed by Surat.

So this simple survey showed me one more trend that i wasn't expecting. Apart from Bangalore, pune, Hyderabad, Surat gujrat is india another palce where CAD activity is buzzing. Talking about western part of india, mahape, maharastra is also coming up.. so guys this are the things that i have seen. So remember this when you are searching for jobs or getting any kind of training on the CAD tools.

Generate this trend again

Related topics:

What is catia?
Catia Video tutorials
Solidworks CAD video tutorials
Catia vs Solidworks
EDST launches catiaa and enovia training center
Where can i learn NASTRAN and CATIA
What is NASTRAN?

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Solidworks is user friendly and puts user first" this is the first things that comes to my mind with my experience with both this softwares.

Best way to learn Catia and solidworks is not to begin with an intension of creating a gas turbine assembly or compressor assembly but to begin with something simple say create a glass. I began that way in both this software without any tutor. I did self learning and there are few lessons i would like to share.

1. Before beginning the software yourself, if possible see someone do something in the cad program. He/she might do something complicated. Learning that is not important, just observe what he is doing, soak in the big steps. like from where to start. How much you soak is not important either just seeing someone do something gets you started.

2. Begin with some small and easy thing. i began my solid modeling by drawing glass, dish, bricks, rod.

3. Don't use all the feature at once experiment and during initial tries don't bother about the steps.

4. Once you have dug and drawn something in your cad program, its time to move to the next stage. In this stage you get to the help section of the software. Follow the step by step tutorials provided. If you have done the first 3 steps this one step will enable you to learn more about the tool.

I have seen that jumping directly to this tutorials is not very quick way to grasp the software. If i do the first two stage this tutorials are easy yo follow and i learn and soak more. The previous two actions work like creating the soil soft and when i do the actual tutorial it seems fit in.

This rule can be applied to any software that you decide to learn and master and i have used this technique in learning so many softwares and it always works.

Related links you might like

CATIA CAD video tutorial!
What is catia?
Solidworks CAD video tutorials
Catia vs Solidworks
EDST launches catiaa and enovia training center
Where can i learn NASTRAN and CATIA
What is NASTRAN?

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

But as you sit down planning, the whole thing overwhelms you? Do you know what the devil there is!! Well that was answered by this small article that I came through.

The devil is getting down to details early on. We should begin with the big picture and should only focus on the main big things than worry about the notebook, the version of CATIA to use. Start using it. What to use will come latter. The main task in learning CATIA, for a very beginner, primary aim ahead will be to familiarize himself with the toolbars and the commands available to his disposal. But what do we worry about? What will I model, where will I find things to model, Who can lend me a engineering drawing book from which I can practice?, The engineering drawing book that I have doesn't have machine drawing, so it won't be good for me and many small questions we bother than plunging into the main task of building a small glass as a first CATIA exercise. We spent hours to searching for tutorial and by the time we have them, the interest is drained... so dear friends shed the get-into-detail-right-away attitude and you will become more productive. And here's the small text that points out the very fact in a very beautiful way.

The article follows

The Devil's in the Details

I really got over the "get into details right away" attitude after I took some drawing classes...If you begin to draw the details right away you can be sure that the drawing is going to suck. In fact, you are completely missing the point.

You should begin by getting your proportions right for the whole scene. Then you sketch the largest objects in your scene, up to the smallest one. The sketch must be very loose up to this point. Then you can proceed with shading which consists of bringing volume to life. You begin with only three tones (light, medium, dark). This gives you a tonal sketch. Then for each portion of your drawing you reevaluate three tonal shades and apply them. Do it until the volumes are there (requires multiple iteration)...

Work from large to small. Always.

Related :
where can i learn CATIA?

What is CATIA?

Catia training in bangalore

Solidworks vs Catia

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Here in NAL i've seen people loose focus on this very important point in their attempt to get to know the tools like catia or nastran! They neglect the theory, their core domain in pursuit of getting a great mesh or perfect assembly!

One must remember all this computing power and the engineering software packages are just tools, and tools have meaning only in the hands of masters! Having the best analysis tool won't make you the best analyst but the engineering insight that you get from your theory will!

The tools certainly makes an engineers job easy but they are not the be all end all. So my advice to all the folks pursuing training here in Bangalore and elsewhere is along with your tools, do upgrade your core knowledge. You are an engineer and this is a profession you need to be constantly in touch with the core area that has earned you the title of engineer!

The tools increase your market but in the long run the base that you have studied is the one that will propel you to new heights. Perhaps in ouraesi we should discuss ways of upgrading our core knowledge.

As bishnujee suggested reading books of our course is one way to begin. Please do chip in with your ideas on this or any other topic that you might have.
Comments are always welcome.

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Solidwork as i saw it works around you where as catia user interface i found was around catia.

And in terms of intelligence i found solidworks more knowing of what i want than catia. Giving relations, constraints is much easier and as i said earlier is much human way in solidworks.

Anyway this are just my personal views after being with both the softwares. Anyway i'm just beginning my journey with catia. I hope as i grow using it i'll find it as appealing as i find solidworks now.

Anyway folks do write me about your experiences with these tools. Would love to know what you feel.

Related links
What is NASTRAN?
What is catia?
Solidworks CAD video tutorials
EDST launches catiaa and enovia training center
Where can i learn NASTRAN and CATIA

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Hope you liked it. well todays post is on CATIA, another engineering software that you will hear about when you graduate in engineering.

CATIA is the market-leading suite of CAD/CAM products developed
by Dassault Systemes. CATIA’s modular architecture allows users to
customize their installations to meet their exact requirements. It
supports digital design processes from concept to reality.

CATIA offers unique design flexibility, which can accommodate even
the most sophisticated product design involving hybrid-modelling
techniques, while preserving the ability to make late engineeringchange.

The product gives a broad range of integrated solutions that cover
all aspects of:

• Product design and manufacture
• Driving enterprise competitiveness
• Task productivity
• Process improvement

source: CSM (institute of technology)

Related links
Video tutorials of CATIA
What is NASTRAN?
Solidworks CAD video tutorials
Catia vs Solidworks
EDST launches catiaa and enovia training center
Where can i learn NASTRAN and CATIA

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free
