2. All of you are preparing for your exams and most of you are left with three or less papers in sec b, so this may be your last semester of AeSI exams. Next sem most of you will complete your degree.
3.
4. I know these are the most tensed moments for a society student when he has last semester to complete section B. Question keeps roaming in mind “will I be able to clear the degree this time or not?” What if any of one paper is left? “Again I will have to waste one more sem”

Most of the students start losing their confidence due to peer pressure. And even they are good in knowledge and worked hard full of sem, they fail in one or more papers.

I want to ask WHY TO LOSE THE BATTLE JUST BECAUSE OF YOUR LOW CONFIDENCE??

Try to keep grip on your confidence, I’d tell you few thing that I did and helped me in my last sem of sec B.I will be very happy if it may help you:

1) Just keep in mind: jo bhi karna hai, jitna bhi tension lena hai, bas es sem hi lena hai...etni mehnat krni h ki next sem exam na likhna pade.

2) Plan breaks during your studies, use your most of the time for your preparation by avoiding tiredness.

3) It will be excellent if every day you can write test on previously asked question papers, if yes then do it for all the three subjects every day and mark your mistakes. If you do it for ten days continuously just before your exams then you will get solid confidence and good chances for clearing the papers.

4) Plan your syllabus and write chapter-wise tests on theory and numerical portion for each chapter. Do it in such a way so that most of the things/things where you are weak will get covered in your test.

5) Collect the things on one separate note that you need to revise frequently. List out all the formulas equations and important diagrams use minimum words and use symbols and drawing pictures to minimize the words. It will help you to revise faster.

6) For example if you usually forget the formula to be used in exam then write one test on the formulas only, it may look foolish but later after exam you will find how useful it was.

7) Complete your revision few days before the exams anyhow and plan for writing the test and correction self.

8) Divide your day in to two halves, in one prepare the questions and revise the theory and in second half write the test on the chapter/s you decided earlier.

9) It will boost your self confidence and you will be able to identify where usually you do mistakes in exam.

10) Just circle your mistakes with red pen and write the correction in front of them.

11) In case if you have two or more exams continuously then mix the questions from all those subjects in your question paper and write a detailed test. It will be proved very helpful in exam if you could do this.

12) Now before your exams you need not to revise full syllabus, you can revise most of the things by reviewing your test papers itself.

13) Post the formulas short notes in your room wall, bathroom, and toilet or in kitchen so that you can utilize your time most wisely and efficiently.

14) Keep your weekly and daily plan right in front of you where you sit to study. Write those things on board that you need to do later to avoid missing them.

15) If you have any of your idea or experience please share it so that it can help others.

Thank you.

Note : PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO THANK RAHUL.

He was into it for the last 7 days and has finally got it completed. Here I present 4 things that I learnt from all this process.

1. Don't assume. Don’t assume what the problem is, state it test it and get to the bottom of it. Don’t assume, search for facts. if you have a theory test it than say it. Do more than you think. Think and test. Not think and think.

2. First capture the big picture then delve into the details. Details are important but before going into the the details get the frame ready. see the big picture. Move back and see the whole as a problem. Set your frame right. Determine your north and south then after you have verified that you are heading the right direction then you should fine tune and get into details.

3. Keep your methods right the results will follow. Have your tools ready. Learn and set up the processes rights results will follow. Pause and setup the ground work. If your base is strong enough, things will all fall in place. So do the ground work and see that your preliminary investigation is right and the setup you have setup is based on facts not assumptions.

4. Absorb the problem first before judging or getting into the detail. Same as the big picture. Absorb the problem than spit out your judgment. Spend time understanding the problem. Don’t state your opinions. its better to test them. Leave the judging to the judges… you just carry on small tests and experiments and draw conclusions from them. Test everything don’t assume.

Bonus : Use bubble sort method to solve problems. From big to small. Eliminate from Big to small. More on this sometimes latter

Well this were some of things that came to mind as I saw my friend at the office finally crack the debugging nut that he was given. He was pleased and I thing many of this approach we can use to solve many of our problems.

Related : Are you seeing the big picture?

For the exam students : How I cleared my Workshop technology exams?

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

This makes it even harder to do well. What should we do? This is the topic i wanted to explore/ Though in my previous post "de-stress before you the examination hall" i have highlighted some of the tips that i had from my experience of taking AeSI exams.

Today i went to net for the tips and i found an excellent resource for fighting pre-exam stress. The tips are arranged in three categories, general exam tips, tips for revision and tips in the examination hall. you can read them here. This is the high light of the page.

General exam stress-busting tips:
Believe in yourself.
Don’t just worry – take action!
Talk to a friend
Don’t put yourself under too much pressure

Tips for the revision period:
Time is of the essence!
Play is as important as work.
Take a break.
Another cuppa? Don't think so.
Eat some ‘superfoods’.
Give your body a workout (as well asyour mind).
A change is as good as a rest.
Experiment with several alternative revision techniques so that revision is more fun and your motivation to study is high. Check out these revision techniques:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/revision/

Tips for keeping calm during the exam:
Try to avoid panic.
Breathe deep.
Blankety blank?
If your mind goes blank, don't panic
Don’t dwell on past exams.

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

This techniques or tips are mixture of what i have learnt and experienced myself and what have my school tutor always told us.

Reach the exam center well ahead of time.
A 30 minutes before you are supposed to enter the exam hall can be your benchmark, but this you can decide according to your needs and situation, but ideally at least 30 minutes more is the optimum time to physcic yourself for the exams.

Don't compare yourself with others, specially just before exams.
Don't judge yourself with others. You are not reading or pouring over your books because you are not the other guy. Everyone is different and have their own personal style. You stick to yours. Don't follow the herd. If you like reading and running your eye on the important points so be it, do it and don't think of the other folks Or else if you prefer just to loiter.. suit yourself. Do what comes natural, forget what the next guy is doing.

Distract your mind.
If you are the other type. Take help from your mobile. get it out and play a game, challenge yourself with small challenge. Do anything thats not related to study. Remember cricketer use this technique and they relax by playing football. A game entirely different than the cricket. So use something. Figure out what suits you. Don't worry about the exams which are just minutes away. If you have studied well and your preparation is ok. Be assure your mind will give you results. If no mobile use something else, you aim is to keep your mind occupied in something else than studies or the exam.

In the examination hall.
Now you are in the examination hall, everyone is taking out there exams pen and are keeping there bag and stuff outside and getting to there seat. Now you are alone, you are not supposed to talk, the examiners are in the hall arranging their stuff. Take deep breadths, go through your plan for the question paper. Remember how will you proceed with the paper. Remain cool. just wait for the papers to be distributed.

Now you got the question paper
Don't begin as soon as you get the paper, read the questions before you get to attempt them. Once you have a cursory glance at the questions begin with the one you know. Keep track of the time but don't hurry. Setting time per question is not the way, set time by hour. 3 big questions in an hour is how i set my time in my exams days in AeSI.

Hope this tips and simple techniques will help you in your exams. Best of luck. and be sure to give in your ways of decompressing before exams in the comments !

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

After that he had his DRDO technical interview. Every one has that, what special about it?

After that he was generous enough to share his experience with us in the ouraesi club. Since the number of messages in yahoo groups gets buried under the layers of many messages, i am pasting it here with my remarks at the end so that they will from hence forth available via google search and can benefit more people.

Tejas patel wrote:

this is for the idea of the friends who r doing aesi.
my interview was on 1st of dec.
there were 13 guys who had came for the interview.
i dont know, but some of the people were saying that
they have called on the merit of written test--SET
2003.
the first 3(i.e.1st,2nd and 3rd of dec) days were for
general candidates followed by 2 days for obc's and
last one for obc and sc/st's.
for the kind information out of 13 present there 7
were from ganesh institute!(i.e.more than 50% to
say).namely in the order of calling,Tejas,Praveen
Bajpai,Puneet Gupta,Prashant Jha,Darshan Trivedi,Suraj
Chaurasia and Sinder. If any body of above persons
spelling if written wrong then its by mistake only.

My interview was more of a sort of introduction then
q&a.

during my interview there were 5 interviewers.2 were
IISc bangalore's professors.one was head
GTRE,bangalore.one was of DRDO lab in agra(i dont know
which).the chairman was from REC warangal.
the rest of the talk i will indicate who asked what.

the next some initial questions from chairman.

Chairman:first question was u have done ur aesi, where
u working while studying?
myself: no
C:then did u prepared ur self?
M:no.
C:then did u took guidance from somewhere?
M:i said yes.
C:where?
M:Ganesh Institute ,Chennai.
(for the next coming candidates he himself asked u r
also from ganesh institute?)
C:u havent done any practical.?
M:yes
C:where?
M:iit madras.
C:u r in first semester , u have 3 more semesters.out
of which 2 are practical.how will u join here?
M:i will request u to give me time to complete,or i
will take a break from m.tech and join here or i will
shift my project in drdo and complete the M.tech.
C:What if i dont give u time to complete the M.tech?
M:I will request u to give me time......
C:what shall i ask?
C:have u seen any wind tunnels?
M:yes.
C:where?
M:iit madras.
C:what type?
M:all the three subsonic, transonic and supersonic.
C:what is the test section range of supersonic
windtunnel in iit madras?
M:mach 2-2.5.(it depends,but to less complicate the
matters i gave this number)
C:wht is the area of the test section?
M:(i couldnt recall exactlyso i said )100mm*100mm.

then the professor from IISc took over.
Prof:which is ur favourite subject?
M:Gas dynamics
P:Ok.i ask u one question.
M:OK.
P:design a mach 3 supersonic cruise missile,with nose
l/d ratio of 1,middle lifting surface of l/d 10 and
tail lifting surface of l/d 5.
(I was quite confused to hear so high question )
M:is it blunt nose?
P:yes
(here i make a mistake)
M:this is missile why do u want to have lifting
surface?
ALL:that u decide u have to design.
(I showed something which was a missile but i dont
know whether it was what he was asking or something
different.but i suppose he wanted that only because he
didnt gave any comment)
P:show me the shock pattern.
(again i was confused what to do,what we have studied
is only bow shock and rest we dont know what happens
at back)
(Still drew something,he didnt commented so i
suppose..)
P:show me the location of CP?
M:give me the freestream pressure.
P:just tell me by ur idea where it will lie.
M:between mid and tail section.
P:why ?
M:because we are having shock (some explanation i gave
on paper by drawing ,and he was not satisfied)
P:OK,if i give u three CP's of nose,midsection and
tail section.can u find CP.
(I was thinking to tell him to say what we do in CMcg
way.that at cp the moment wont come.)
P:i dont want explanation.
M:yes
P:how?
(b4 i say something)
P:my last hint (zigma M/zigma L)
(b4 i start my word)
P:i dont want explanation.just tell me.
(b4 i start)
C:Ok leave it.

another prof of IISc.
P2:what is stress concentration factor?
(i had heard something like that but i couldnt recall
so i gave bluff)
M:max stress by average stress.
P2:draw an rectangular element,make a hole in
that,apply a tension load.
P2:where will be the max stress?
(b4 i can put my pencil on paper)
P2:on the edges of the circle?
M:yes.
P2:ok,u must have learned theory of elasticity.take an
element from that rectangular element.show me the
stress pattern.
(I showed something ,OK.I also know that it was wrong
but i was off by the missile question)
then came GTRE head:(he asked a simple question and i
made mistake)
G:take a rod and apply bending and torsion
simultaneous ly.what will be bending moment diagram?
G:will it be direct addition or direct subtraction?
M:its addition(that's my mistake)
G:direct?
M:no,some equivalent value.(i couldnt recall the
formula there which i would have dont atleast 100
times)

then came the agra heads turn
A:so u have seen the wind tunnel, what we do in wind
tunnel?
M:we test the model
A:how we will test, directly i can take a model and
test there?
M:no there should be dynamic similarity.(at that time
it could not recall kinematic similarity)
A:what will u equate?
M:reynolds no,and mach no in our cased.
A:and ..?
M:Froude no,but we dont give much preferrence to it.
A:that's what i wanted.
A:how will i test a LCA,if i have particular reynolds
no then how will u test it in wind tunnel?
M:we will match the reynolds no.
A:how?
M:suppose u have a one fifth model then vary other
parameters so that it remains same.
A:OK

then again it came with chairman.
C:u say u have worked on supersonic WT.
C:why dont we dont equate reynolds no there?

M:at high speed mach no i similarity is more important
than reynolds no similarity.
(this is probably the wrong answer)
C:ok if i want to increase the test section mach no
what should i do?
M:increase the area ratio.
C:will that be sufficient ?
M:other consideration will be the pressure, either
increase the total pressure or decrease the back
pressure.
C:ok what is area ratio?
M(I explained that)
C:what is throat area?
(i explained that also)
C:so can i increase the area in any way i like?
M :no
C:what if i put a cone?will it give me increase in
mach no?
M:no,it will have to be carefully designed
C:why?
M:otherwise that wont give isentropic flow.
C:have u heard about method of characteristics?
M:yes but i have not applied any where.
C:OK,thank u,u can go.

i know i had made lot of mistakes but this was my
first technical interview.so i am happy even if i dont
get it.i tried to perform well, but was baffled with
the first question.

any way the above is for others information so they
dont make mistakes.
tejas.

so this is the post of tejas, i have intentionally left the message intact to give you the flavor of the sitution there. First of all thanks to tejas for the candid and honest mail about the interview.

As mentioned in the earlier post, look from where most of the questions were triggered..

The fav subject is omni present and this is where the whole interview got its focus. See how different it would have been if the question tejas's answer was more related to a subject he knew a lot about. So the first lessons to learn is have your favorite subject ready. Let it be the subject that you know the most about and the subjects in which you are most confident.

Second thing that you might have noticed is that all other questions that are asked are from the replies that tejas was giving, so you see interviewee is the one who leads the interview. It is your words that triggers the questions, so keep them to the territories that is topics that you are confident about.

Since this is already a long post i'll discuss other points in some other post.

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

One of the gem that i enjoyed while in my aesi days is the one i reprinting it here. Its great.

With AMAeSI examination just right the corner, all those who are giving exams do read how to fail your exams!!!

Play it by the ear : No need to plan for the exam.

Don’t revise : If you don’t know it, revision is a waste of time. If you do know it, why bother to revise.

Aim to just pass : No wasted effort needed.

Don’t learn exam techniques : Exams are bad enough without learning techniques as well.

Do not anticipate questions : You may be wrong and just waste time.

Don’t read previous papers of examination : Why burn the midnight lamp and waste your oil!!

Just do first five questions : The format hardly matters, all questions are bad anyway.

Don’t worry about the actual questions : Its more interesting to write what you want, and show the examiner, you know the subject what its all about.

Ignore the instructions : They only put you off.

Don’t check the time : You could write a few more words instead.

Never check answers : There will only be a few minors’ errors.

Always start with introduction and end with summary : That way you can forget about the middle.

If in doubt, waffle : The examiner will probably think you know it all and have done it all.

Be disorganized : You can always get a pen from invigilator.

Don’t bother with question numbers : It will be obvious which question you are answering.

Have a little drink just before the exam : it helps you relax and prevent you from over stress.

Include a note to the examiner wishing him/her happy year and explain how pressured you have been : examiners are human and a bit of flattering never goes a miss !!!

cheeeeeeeers and all the best to all of you...

Related stories

Tips for getting most out of your revision?
A unique revision system for exams
Some do and don't for the upcoming AeSI exams
How to pass exams?
How i cleared my Workshop technology exams in AeSI?
Ebooks for aerospace
Wealth of knowledge in OURAeSI file section
Aerodynamics ebook on net
5 tips for studying for exams

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

It has completed 6th year and i know it has lot of great advice in the archives. So i am digging it up and posting the gems that i think that are relevant now and will help students and members of aeronautical society.

here one related to reducing exam stress that i wrote in ouraesi. I liked it very much and has lot of good tips that you can apply in the aesi exams.

Last semester's, as i come out of the maths exams, everyone was depressed. Question paper was good and easy. "Kaisa huya !" " Yaar question sahi that par......." Well almost everyone i met had this same answer. The questions were simple. But yet the students coming of the hall room had a different face, what was the reason i pondered. Even mine was the same case. Why, what went wrong? While coming back to our room, I discussed this with my roommate who also felt that way.

Well, the reason behind this took no more than the bus ride back to my room and i had zeroed anxiety as the main reason !

Ya in my case it was anxiety, it was same with kishore, hamza and many i met that day. It is normal to experience some level of anxiety or stress just before and during the examination. This is appropriate and helps spur us on. But when anxiety overrides efficiency, it must be controlled.

So this semester, before we go to exams i scoured the net and came up with this study and stress busting tips that will, i hope, allow us to give our best in the exams.

In my hurry, i forget to jot down the source of this info's.

It is normal to experience some level of anxiety or stress just before and during the examination. This is appropriate and helps spur us on.

However, occasionally our stress levels might surge unexpectedly and throw us off balance at just the wrong moment.

There are four likely times when this might happen
on the way to the exam
outside of the exam room
waiting for the paper
during the exam.

In most cases you will probably be too busy to worry about not passing.

Occasionally, however, you might find that you are running out of steam with a particular question. This can be a dangerous moment in an exam because it opens up the possibility for you to lose your focus and concentration.

There are several things that you can do if you find your thoughts drifting away from the task at hand.

Refocus.
Try to refocus your energy. Relax yourself by taking several deep breaths, hold them in and then count slowly as you let them out.

Reassess.
Decide whether to persevere with the question. Will your time be better spent on another question? You can always come back to this one when you have completed the other required questions. It is possible that you might remember things to use in this question while doing another.

Remember.
Keep reminding yourself that:

you do not have to give perfect answers
exams are designed to test what you know, they are not designed to fail you

you do not have to write down everything that has been written on the subject, just the main issues, ideas or points relevant for the question

Tips on avoiding stress in Exams:

Before the test - Begin studying early, review starting as soon as possible after the first lecture. Never cram the night before. Light review of already learned material. Lack of preparation is the cause of most exam stress. Once you have done all you can to prepare and understand the material then the goal is to relax. Recall improves as stress decreases however some stress is good.

Arrive on time

During the Exam - Manage your time wisely, preview the test and plan your attack. Don't worry about what the other students are doing. This is not a race, you do not get extra points for turning your test in first. use the time allotted to be careful. I see so many careless mistakes that would have been avoided had the student took the time to carefully read the question. Quality is the goal. If you find your self losing concentration. Stop working take a deep breath use muscle relaxation stretch after a minute return to work.

People usually think of the answer to a question after they turn in the test. This is because as soon as they turn in the test the stress level drops and the recall ability increases. The best way to get better at taking exams is to take them often and take lots of them.

Related stories

Ebooks for aerospace
Wealth of knowledge in OURAeSI file section
Aerodynamics ebook on net
5 tips for studying for exams
How to eliminate Worries and confusions during training

Best of luck guys and gals !!!

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free

Do it and make sure you have all the numerical and questions done!! This is what happened to my roommate and me. We studied everything, did every numerical twice, scoured the notes by heart but ignored the numerical of last semester. So there we were. sitting in the examination hall cursing myself and the question setter for not making an effort and myself for being foolish enough to leave these questions thinking they won't be repeated so soon.

Well, if these two questions were a blow then the rest was scary as I was left there to answer all the theory questions for which the theory was inadequate. In p2 mainly the theory comes from the combustion chamber part and here I did one more mistake in my preparation. I did make notes but they were not enough, I mean this subject requires notes and to be studied from variety of books, they questions are similar but not a single book you will find in Gie that has the complete answer in it, so you got to scour loads of book to get a good answerable answer. Otherwise it just vague, and on the figures that you have to depend on. So make it a point to have good notes on the theory part of P2.

Does having good notes will suffice, no? Having notes gives you an edge now studying and memorizing them does the real work and this takes me down to my last minute exam blunder. From the start of the course people fed us p2 is easy. Just do the numerical do the cc and you are clear. And I foolishly believed it and so did some other folks! But this over simplification made me neglect the subject. Yeah it actually did. I did give it less time, I concentrated on the numerical, left out the theory for last week before the exams and this is where I did get my most anxious moment.

I delegated the theory till the last week before the exams and then when I finally sat with the book and the notes, I started getting anxiety pangs. And believe me they are much worse that snake bites!! “Ok lets do cc”. “Hey what are the different types of nozzles” and then ok that is the derivation for the Bryton cycle. This and much more topic tumbled down to me all at once, drawing me, drowning me. I somehow did the stuff but was not satisfied; I could have done much better if I had paid the proper study schedule for p2. So folks learn from my mistake. Never delegate the work of p2 and never neglect and let it sit there till the last moment.

One of my reason for keeping the thing off to last minutes was the confidence that I had 25% of the syllabus like the cycles already covered in section a and I can do that in an hour and that proved to a naught. It not that I couldn't do the numerical or derivations, but its that it look more time I expected and silly mistakes snarled in every fifth line making things frustrating, so do all the stuff before exams when you have lots of time. keep the exams and a week before the exam for pure old studies. no new things, just revision of what you have already learnt.

And when I am on to advising then there is one more that I guess every amaesi'an will agree. When preparing for amaesi, be prepared to surprised at the question paper, its always as inventive as Edison (perhaps!), as unpredictable as the stock market. And there are no rules. don't say this topic will come , that won't come? It a wild stock market out there. any question is possible so just go ahead and study what you can. Don't believe me just flip the June 2004 and Dec 2003 questions your doubts will melt away. As one batch mate of mine who gave flight for the 4th time put it candidly, "every time I study for flights I learn a new thing!" So folk you will always find new things; the subjects are vast and so is the mindset of the question paper setter, so just make sure you learn every time you read and don't guess. just learn what you find. who knows!!

And last but definitely not the least thing that I learnt from the exam was not to fret over what I have not learnt. Just make sure that you know everything that you have studied and concentrate on it during the exams. Fretting over what you have not done cost a friend of mine a semester. You know, our syllabus is big for 6 months, but we brave souls do take the plunge. But don't expect to cover all of it. If you can its well and good but crying over what's not covered it not great as I learn from mistake of one friend in this exams. I am in no way suggesting selective studies. No that's even worse. You loose more by it. All I am saying is if time gets crunch and before the exams, its always wise to have a in-depth knowledge of what you already know than shoving the new material under stress!!! So prepare from the beginning of the semester........

Related links for AMAeSI June 2008 exams

5 tips for studying for exams
Secret of clearing AeSI!
My way of decompressing while preparing for exams
After exams what?
6 lessons from last semester

View RSS feed

Grab "After-AeSI Career guide to AeSI" ebook free
