40.
Rod Brind'Amour said today he's not concerned and that it should be figured out quickly, but there is Dreger's report from yesterday.

 41.

Walt Ruff: Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour on all the talk about his contract situation the last 24-48 hours: “I had a great conversation yesterday with Don and again this morning. I feel really good that we’ll figure it out quickly. I’m not concerned.”

 42.
TSN: Darren Dreger on TSN 1050 radio yesterday on what is going on down in Carolina with head coach Rod Brind’Amour and his contract situation.

 43.
** NHLRumors.com transcription

 44.
Jeff O’Neill: “So Dregs, you had a report out of Carolina. What the hell’s that all about? Like, what, where does that leave everything down there? Like is it just, is this, I don’t know, I just, describe what’s goes on down there. What is going on?”

 45.
NHL Rumors: Coaching – New Jersey Devils, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the San Jose Sharks

 46.
Dreger: “Well, what was going on was that there was a healthy contract extension negotiation taking place with Rod Brind’amour, which also included the assistant coaches and the staff.

 47.
And I think Brind’Amour and company felt like you know, as of a week, 10 days ago, that they were right there. They were closing in on an extension. And then my understanding is that General Manager Don Waddell, who has since been quoted in a piece by the Daily Faceoff, which is interesting to me, and saying they feel like they’re close. Well they were, you know, 10 days ago, and then Waddell was pushed out of the equation and I believe that Tom Dundon took control and basically said, alright, well, we’re not doing this and we’re not doing that. And effectively, the offer to Brind’Amour was taken off the table.

 48.
Now, could it change with a phone call or a face-to-face discussion? Sure it could. We know that Rod Brind’Amour prefers to stay in Carolina. But I’m not reporting what I reported earlier without knowing that Rod Brind’Amour is willing to become a free agent and see what the market brings.

 49.
His focus right now is on winning the Stanley Cup. Who’s going to question that in the possibility with the Carolina Hurricanes and way that that team is, is moving going into the second round? It just doesn’t make any sense to anybody who has reached out to me since I reported that, in the approach by ownership of the Carolina Hurricanes and why they’re doing this to bring them more.

 50.
I mean, this guy fellas, again in digging in a little bit deeper, he was, in the last six years has been half of what the league average is among NHL head coaches in terms of being paid. And the extension that I believe they were working on would have put him just outside the top 10 of NHL head coaches paid in the National Hockey League.

 51.
Does that make sense to any of you guys? Doesn’t make sense to me.”

 52.
Brian Hayes: “No kidding. No kidding. I mean that’s, that’s really beneficial. What you’re saying is Rod Brind’amour still want to give a hometown discount because he wants to stay there.”

 53.
Dreger: “He wants to stay but he’s willing to leave. He is.”

 54.
NHL Rumors: An Offer to Rod Brind’Amour or Not … That is the Question

 55.
Hayes: “Yeah, yeah. Well, listen, if he does, like what kind of activity are we talking? You know, how many teams in the league are are immediately all- in on Rod Brind’Amour.”

 56.
Everyone. All of them. All of them. And including teams that have active head coaches who are still in the playoffs, that may not be in the playoffs for much longer.”

 78.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Head Coaching Position Still Desirable

 79.
Dave Pagnotta of the Fourth Period joined SiriusXM NHL Network Radio with Steve Kouleas and Andrew Raycroft and was asked if the Toronto Maple Leafs head coaching position is still desirable.

 80.
** NHLRumors.com transcription

 81.
NHL Rumors: A Coaching Change Coming in Toronto?

 82.
Andrew Raycroft: “Dave, let’s lean into that. Just one more question about that. Whoever is, when let’s play the hypothetical, let’s not, you know, bury the body already, but if they do lose, Keefe gets fired. Is this next coach for the Leafs the highest-paid coach automatically? Is this the, is this the best job for any of these guys and will they be willing to wait to see what the Leafs do before they, they take on any other options?”

 83.
Dave Pagnotta: “I think without question, it’s definitely a very, very desirable destination. But I think whoever comes in is going to want to understand what the plan is. Both immediately and down the road. You know Mitch Marner and John Tavares have one more year left on their respective contracts. Is the goal to keep them around? Are you changing it?

 84.
NHL Rumors: If the Toronto Maple Leafs Lose …

 85.
And if you aren’t changing things, what do those changes look like? What’s part of this? This diagram that you’re putting together for now and 2, 3, 4, or 5 years down the line? So I think whoever comes in, whether it is a Craig Berube or somebody else, you know, I wonder, and then Pittsburgh is spoken very highly or Kyle Dubas has Mike Sullivan, but if he if they decide to make a change, I’ve got to imagine he would be on their radar as well bringing in somebody experienced and certainly Chief brings also some of that grittiness behind the bench when he played he’ll want that translated into the roster as well.

 86.
But I think whoever comes in is definitely going to want to have a clearer picture as to how things are going to look going into next season. And well beyond.”

 87.
Where Does Brendan Shanahan Fit Into The Maple Leafs?

 88.
Following the above segment, Dave Pagnotta of the Fourth Period was asked if the attention turns to Brendan Shanahan and if a change will be made there.

 89.
** NHLRumors.com Transcription

 90.
Are We Sure Major Changes Are Coming with the Toronto Maple Leafs?

 91.
Steve Kouleas: “So where is Shanahan in this new Keith Pelley administration that said 29 days old?”

 92.
Pagnotta: “You know, we haven’t really heard too much with respect to any potential change at the top level. I think, bringing in Brad Treliving. I think there’s been or there was a little bit of an understanding that Shanny, who was very off, well, I say, behind the scenes, hands-on in the public eye. He wanted to be portrayed as, as you know, off, but he was very ob in certain circumstances.

 93.
NHL Rumors: Detroit Red Wings, and the Toronto Maple Leafs

 94.
I believe that bringing in Treliving, change that mindset when Tree came in, he wanted to have, you know, as much autonomy as possible, if not fully with respect to the roster, and I don’t care what they’re saying internally, Brendan Shanahan tentacles are all over this roster. So or at least the bulk of it anyway until Tree came in.

 95.
So I imagined that there’s going to be my guess would be that there would be some leniency and a leash here to see what Treliving can do before there’s any serious consideration to making changes up top with respect to the President being Brendan Shanahan.”

 116.
The Seattle Kraken missed the playoffs again and fired their coach on Monday. Are more changes coming to the Kraken this offseason?

 117.

Sportsnet: Kate Shefte of the Seattle Times on the Jeff Marek Show on if there could be some changes coming to the Seattle Kraken this offseason after GM Ron Francis‘ press conference on Monday.

 118.
** NHLRumors.com transcription

 119.
Marek: “That has a… that was pretty grumpy at times, maybe angry at times Ron Francis that we saw yesterday. And normally Ron Francis is pretty chill, pretty laid back. Handles things very calm. I look at that and sort of trying to read the tea leaves here on what’s going to happen with Seattle next. I believe this is going to be the summer of bigger moves for Seattle. Kate agree, disagree?

 120.
Shefte: “You know, I always you know, I probably would have said that last summer too and then they really didn’t do a whole lot. It’s hard to tell. I, you got to think so, right?

 121.
NHL Rumors: Will the Tampa Bay Lightning Make Steven Stamkos an Offer Below Market But Good Enough?

 122.
But then also they, you know, they were very successful not that long ago. They think that what they, they’re, they’re proud of their core. They think that they’ve got mostly what they need, but they just weren’t scoring this year. And that is not something you can overcome very easily.

 123.
And I you know, just I imagined Justin Schultz probably isn’t gonna, isn’t gonna stick around and early indications have not been that he’s staying there. So there will be you know, and that opens up a space for Ryker Evans. He’s already there. The new fourth newfangled fourth line experiment they hit there a year ago, their fourth line was what was the envy of the league. Talked about constantly. Multiple 20 goal scorers down there. Was wild.

 124.
And but then this year, the replacements didn’t really work out so maybe they try something new there. They brought all the most of those guys in on pretty short deals.

 125.
And you know, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta trade. You got to kind of, I would think you got to make at least a couple moves. You know, supplemental pieces. This isn’t really you know, (in audible) flashy three agents or the big name on the trade market. That hasn’t really been Seattle’s thing and I’d be a little, I’d be pretty floored if that wound up being their thing this summer, but I hope they make some moves. Some complimentary moves, you know, what else, you got to do that right?

 126.
NHL Rumors: Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Seattle Kraken

 127.
Marek: “I really get the feeling that, that Ron Francis is looking to knock things around the box in Seattle. But again, to your point, we’ll see what happens.”

 199.
There is lots of speculation about Steven Stamkos and his future with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Their GM is optimistic about re-signing him.

 200.

The Tampa Bay Lightning were eliminated in five games by their in-state rival, the Florida Panthers, in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, the talk coming out of the series is about whether Steven Stamkos played his last game with the Lightning.

 201.
The cameras were focused on Stamkos during the handshake line as he waited for the final two players to go through the line before he walked off the ice last.

 202.
NHL Rumors: Could Steven Stamkos Actually Leave Tampa?

 203.
In the post-game media availability, even Jon Cooper was asked about Steven Stamkos’s status with the team moving forward and if he could imagine the captain wearing a jersey other than the Lightning colors.

 204.
“I don’t know if there will be much conversation. I hope not, anyway. He belongs here. We know it. He knows it,” Cooper said to the media following Game 5. “But, again, this is two seconds after a game. But he and I have grown up together. He’s a heck of a player. But he’s also, I suppose, in control of his own destiny. I don’t know what’s going to happen. He feels like a Bolt for life, but only he and Julien can answer that one.”

 205.
The Stamkos talk will not go away this offseason, either. It will be the talk of the offseason. It was when he hit free agency before ultimately re-signing with the Lightning. But the noise will not go away.

 206.
We know Stamkos’s feelings at the beginning of the season. He was unhappy that no contract extension had been discussed. Stamkos wants to stay in Tampa, and the team wants him.

 207.
Lightning General Manager Julien BriseBois addressed Steven Stamkos’s future on Wednesday’s media availability. BriseBois told the media he had preliminary discussions with Stamkos and his agent once they got off their flight back from Sunrise.

 208.
NHL Rumors: Steven Stamkos on Track To Remain with the Lightning

 209.
BriseBois stated he was ‘hopeful’ about keeping Stamkos with the Lightning, and he is a priority this offseason.

 210.
Chris Kreen of Tampa Bay Lightning: “Obviously, Steven Stamkos needs a contract, and we want him to be part of that group. The aim is for him to continue to play on a contending Tampa Bay Lightning team going forward.”

 211.
In the final year of his contract with the Lightning before becoming a free agent, Stamkos finished with 81 points (41 goals and 40 assists), including 16 goals in the final 17 games.

 212.
NHL Rumors: Steven Stamkos Wants To Remain with the Tampa Bay Lightning

 213.
He also recorded six points in five playoff games, including leading the Lightning in scoring with five goals in the playoffs. Steven Stamkos can still produce.

 214.
The question will be, does he take a discount to stay? And what is his discount? Remember, Anze Kopitar went from $10 million AAV to $7.5 million to stay in Los Angeles, but you can make the point that Stamko’s discount is still $8.5 million.

 215.
The Lightning are up against the salary cap. They also have other decisions to make with other players. But all the focus will be on Steven Stamkos until a new deal is complete or he signs elsewhere.

 235.
There is a report that some 'significant' Seattle Kraken players didn't want to play under Dave Hakstol any more?

 236.

Emerald City Hockey: Emily Kaplan on ESPN’s The Point on the Seattle Kraken firing Dave Hakstol on Monday.

 237.
Host: “Seattle fired Dave Hakstol Emily. That’s 17 coaching changes since the end of last season. Why and who could replace him?”

 238.
Kaplan: “Yeah, this one somewhat shocking, somewhat not shocking. What I can tell you is that Ron Francis did not want to make this move. Dave Hakstol is now one of four coaches who lost their jobs this cycle who didn’t even have their extension kick-in yet.

 239.
But I was told at the exit meetings with players, there was a handful of players, and pretty significant players, who made it clear to management, ‘I don’t want to play on this team in the future if Dave Hakstol is still the coach.’ And that forced them to make a change.

 240.
NHL Rumors: Carolina Hurricanes and Seattle Kraken

 241.
Paul McFarland an assistant also didn’t have the contract renewed.

 242.
If they look internally, Dan Bylsma is running their AHL team. You remember him from the Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins has a very legitimate shot. He’s done a great job with Coachella Valley. They’re heading into the playoffs. They just had a bye after the first round.

 243.
But a lot of scuttlebutt I hear around the league is, can Ron Francis pry Rod Brind’Amour more away from Carolina? That’s a situation we wouldn’t see come to fruition until the Canes are eliminated.”

 244.
Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times: Seattle Kraken GM Ron Francis said that there is more at stake these days and the leashes are shorter for NHL coaches

 245.
“I think there’s so much at stake, right? The parity in the league is so close that on any given night you can win or lose.

 246.
“And the expectations are probably more intense now than they’ve ever been when you look at how teams can just get into the playoffs and have a chance to win the (Stanley) Cup.”

 247.
NHL Rumors: Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Seattle Kraken

 248.
Hakstol was let go before his contract extension kicked in. He wasn’t let go because of what was said during the players exit interviews. There will always be players griping about things. If there were issues between some players and the coach, management likely already new about it, so a decision to go a different direction was likely known weeks ago.

 543.
Everyone knows Steven Stamkos wants to remain in Tampa. Will they offer him a below market deal but one that is good enough for him to accept?

 544.

Sportsnet 590 The FAN: Elliotte Friedman on the Jeff Marek Show on the Tampa Bay Lightning and pending unrestricted free agent forward Steven Stamkos.

 545.
** NHLRumors.com transcription

 546.
Marek: “Now John Cooper was asked about Steven Stamkos. And he said what I think we all believe that Stamkos should be there and belongs there and should be a Tampa Bay Lightning. You believe so, I believe so. I would argue that the majority of the listeners/viewers right now are of the same belief.

 547.
The problem is, none of us hold the pen. That’s just Julian BriseBois. He’s the one holding the pen on this one. Do you have a sense of which way the wind is blowing on Stamkos in Tampa? We started this conversation in early October, and here he are now that Tampa’s out and we’ll pick up the conversation.

 548.
NHL Rumors: Steven Stamkos Wants To Remain with the Tampa Bay Lightning

 549.
Friedman: “I heard, you know, listening to Cooper night, you know, I, Cooper was it was interesting. H made it sound like I mean, I’m assuming while without knowing exactly what’s going on, I’m sure you’d have a good idea of what’s going on. He made it sound like it didn’t have to be a long conversation.

 550.
And, again, it’s emotional. It’s right after the season ended. And I don’t want to guess but he sure made it sound like there’s a deal to be made there. And he made it sound like the Lightning themselves know how important it is to make a deal.

 551.
Like the one thing just based on pure hockey, Jeff, Stamkos was one of their best players in the first round. He played as hard as, he played as hard as anybody did. He was productive.

 552.
You know, like, like to me, Tampa Bay without Stamkos, nevermind all, how much he means to them and they mean to him, they’re just not as good a team without Stamkos there unless they think they’ve got something they can do to can make them better.

 553.
I just think and I’ve said this a lot, the Lightning know that that’s where he wants to be. They know it. They went through it last time. He had all these big offers on the table, half the league was chasing after him and he went back to Tampa, okay. They know that. They know he wants to be there.

 554.
I think it’s all going to come down to are they going to make an offer that he feels is legitimate enough. It’s going to be below market I would bet Jeff, but are they going to make him an offer that makes him say, ‘yeah, that’s good enough. I’ll take it.’

 555.
NHL Rumors: Philadelphia Flyers, and the Tampa Bay Lightning

 556.
And I think that’s what the line here is going to be for Tampa is, make him an offer that is below market but you know, he’ll take it. And I think that’s what they’re going to do.
