Car driving is an unusual activity as our daily lives depend on this luxury. When driving our body positions are not natural or in the proper stance. The longer the time spent in the automobile, the more likely the body will tense up and cause pain. This article provides some ways to ease the tension and make the driving experience a little more pleasant.

Steps Step-by-step instructions that clearly explain what steps should be taken. More Info.
1) Fix the back support. The driver’s seat position causes your body to sit at a flexed angle that is not a usual posture stance. The sagging of your lower back and shoulders while in the car seat will eventually cause you great discomfort and pain due to the unusual stress to your lumbar area. Therefore, it is important to remedy this. Add a small lumbar support cushion; your sore muscles won’t have to do so much work to keep you in place.

Nova creations has also invented a unique product, ArmRestor, an all support car accessory that assist in the management of not only your necessitates while traveling but adding a unique air cushioned arm rest pad that assists on placing your body in a proper stance, thereby aligning your lumbar area, and preventing stress to your back. The ArmRestor has provided many satisfied customers with the needed support that many vehicles owners complain about, a more comfortable driving experience and a tool to avoid all those pernicious aches and pains that slowly creep upon us while driving.

2) Adjust the head rest for comfort. It is very important that your head rest is comfortable as this will also assist to minimize back pain. Ensure you try to rest your head against the head rest as this will definitely make you feel more relaxed, and keep your back proper. The ArmRestor will also assist you to rest your head on the headrest as the ArmRestor will keep you in a proper sitting stance- a natural way of sitting and resting your arm on the upper arm rest pad attached to your door, making you sit properly, similarly as if you were in a chair at home. If you use an arm rest, we always sit properly as it aligns your entire body. ArmRestor is a strategic accessory in that it’s positioned at the right height of your body height, giving you the comfort feeling while you drive

3) Multiple Relation Methods. There are parts of your body that have little choice but to keep working while driving. A Differential relaxation regiment allows the muscles not being used to be relaxed while you are driving. For example, while your shoulders and neck are areas of the body that don’t appear to be affected while driving , they actual come into play while driving and they often end up being a source of pain from one repeated position. Try to remember to keep your neck, shoulders, non-working leg, etc. relaxed as the other muscles do the driving work. Relax your shoulders by making them drop,, sit up straighter, exercise your neck by stretching your neck when waiting at lights, etc. Again, we recommend the ArmRestor as a device to assist you while on the road as one of the top notch accessories that not only is a versatile interior car accessory to provide aesthetic flavor but provides those special compartments for your travel needs along with the benefits of assisting you in driving more relaxed, less stressful, and more comfortable. The arm rest pad will avoid shoulder sagging and back slouching. We recommend this!!

4) Keep your eyes at Birdseye view. As the day progresses, many drivers’ find themselves tired and eventually begin slumping at the wheel. We instinctively slouch then adjust the mirrors to suit the lower positioning of your eyes, rather than logically stretching back to your proper posture. We should always leave mirrors alone which will keep your eyes at the same level throughout the drive.

5) Adjust the seat. If it is raining , snowing or foggy, do not strain forward to see out of the window, it is better to remain seated properly as usual and to simply move the seat forward a little to help you see better. If there is poor visibility and you cannot see whatsoever, pull over, take a break and go back to driving when the visibility improves.

6) Calm and Patience. Being frustrated, angry, or enraged by other drivers will not only be a complete waste of your efforts but a physiological way to make your muscles tense, create aches and pains, beyond your control. Except the distractions and annoyance of poor drivers that are inconsiderate and go with the flow, it is your best bet. Some techniques is to put on music, etc.

What should you do, Buy or lease!!!

Most people give varying opinions and basically most don’t know which method is better. Buying is traditionally the answer you get from most people. A financial perspective, it’s true, provided you’re willing to make higher monthly payments, pay off the loan in full and keep the car for a few years. Leasing is less expensive option can be a less expensive option on a month-to-month basis.

Each person has their own personal situation that may be more effective for them whether it be leasing or buying, so there isn’t a cookie cutter answer. Each scenario has its own set of pros and cons. We saythe decision to lease or buy usually comes down to your lifestyle and how you prefer to pay for things.

Leasing is traditionally less expensive than purchasing. This is based on how the dealerships create there terms which in part is mostly dictated by the financial institutions that provide the funding to the dealerships. The banks and funding companies control these factors and the dealership just implements such programs. Leasing is made to look attractive for the dealerships so consumers demand more leasing of autos, as it is cheaper than buying. Also, the financial institutions provide this to the dealerships because these institutions make such large volume of sales income with leasing programs than traditionally from direct consumer buying. More sales, more income a company makes!!! Truth be said, there are elements of this that do help a consumer with respect to leasing.

Simple examples are the following: if you need an upscale car for business, perhaps to entertain clients, leasing allows you to have a nicer car for less money. It might also provide a good tax write-off. However, if you’re someone who plans to stick with the same auto for years, the most financially best choice would be to buy a new or used car and keep it for as long as it is reliable.

Leasing in the long run will cost you more money but in the short run, your monthly payments will be less. Buying , you get to keep the car after all payments and have some book value as an asset to either trade in for a newer car, sell on the market, or use as collateral for a loan. You’d enjoy a few years without a car payment, which is the point of car buying. That’s something people often forget.

Ultimately, you can say good things about both buying and leasing. Your choice might come down to personal tastes and priorities rather than pure dollars and cents.

If you want to get a detailed report into the economics of leasing and buying, take a look at “How Much Car Can I Afford?” It has a detailed discussion of a few car-buying scenarios. We also recommend you try out the Edmunds Auto Calculators to see what your lease payments would be and to compare lease costs to car purchase costs.

Since everyone’s situation is different, here are the pros and cons of leasing and the pros and cons of buying. Some of these points are financial factors and others relate to your needs and lifestyle. Keep in mind that there isn’t always a perfect answer to the question of whether to lease or buy.

Leasing Pros:

1)You have lower monthly payments with a low — or no — down payment.
2)You can drive a better car for less money.
3)You have lower repair costs because you are under the vehicle’s included factory warranty.
4)You can more easily transition to a new car every two or three years.
5)You don’t have trade-in hassles at the end of the lease.
6)You pay less sales tax.

Leasing Cons:

1)You don’t own the car at the end of the lease (although there is always the option to buy).
2)Your mileage is typically limited to 12,000 miles a year (you can purchase extra).
3)You may find lease contracts confusing and filled with unfamiliar terminology.
4)You’ll pay more in the long run for a leased car than you will if you buy a car and keep it for years.
5)You could face excessive wear-and-tear charges. These can be a nasty surprise at the end of the lease.
6)You will find it costly to terminate a lease early if your driving needs change.

Buying Pros:

You can modify your car as you please.
You’ll save money over the long term if you buy a car.
You can drive as much as you like. There’s no excess mileage penalty.
You have more flexibility since you can sell the car whenever you want.
You can use the car as a trade-in on the next car you buy.
Buying Cons:

You have to pay a higher down payment to avoid being upside down in the loan (owing more than the car is worth).
Your monthly car payments are higher than lease payments.
You’re responsible for repair costs once the warranty expires.
You face possible trade-in or selling hassles when you decide to get your next car.
You’ll have more of your cash tied up in a car, which depreciates in value.
Summary

Basically, leasing makes it easier to get more car for less money. This is because you only pay for the use of the car for two or three years, instead of paying for the vehicle itself. Buying, on the other hand, frees you from the restrictions involved in leasing, such as mileage caps. The car is yours to do with as you wish.

Determine your needs and decide which choice best suits your lifestyle.

Automotive service has much anxiety attached to it as a good mystery. Any number of issues can arise with your car mechanics and many questions you can ask yourself- What is wrong, is this covered under the warranty, what is the potential cost!!! Any number of questions can arise when something is wrong with your car or even when you just bring it to the dealer for its scheduled maintenance:

“My car only has 12,000 miles on it, so why do the brakes shudder?”

“When I brought my car to the dealership for its 15,000-mile maintenance, or any other repair needed- tires need to be upgraded…… the service advisor showed me a list of things to be done that was a lot more than my owner’s manual called for. Do I go by the book or heed the service advisor’s recommendations?”

As with anything else in life, the more you know, the better off you are. A little research and street smarts will go a long way toward saving your pocketbook from unsavory service practices. Yes, we know not all dealerships and mechanics are out to cheat you, and many are honest and take pride in their craft. Don’t be naivete’!!!! . Trust but verify. Can you fully trust any service team at the dealership or your personal mechanic you used for years or recommended by your friend??? Maybe, but it wouldn’t hurt to protect yourself with some knowledge to guard against those who are out to rip you off.

That said, here are a few tips for dealing with both repair and maintenance circumstances:

Repairs:

1) Get yourself a service/repair manual for your car (typically available at the major auto parts chains, such as Pep Boys and AutoZone). When the time comes, this will at least help you research and understand what the mechanic or service advisor is talking about when he tells you what’s wrong with your car.

2) If the problem is something that affects safety or seems to be a common manufacturing defect (such as shuddering brakes on a relatively new car), chances are you can get the problem taken care of for free if you’re under the warranty. What you want to do is find out if a recall (which is when the manufacturer openly acknowledges a defect) has been issued for that problem. Oftentimes you’ll get a letter in the mail (a “recall notice”) that will tell you what the problem is (even if you haven’t experienced it) and urge you to make a service appointment to get it taken care of. But if you feel you have a problem and haven’t received any notice in the mail, go to the NHTSA site and click on “Recall Searches by make, model, year.” Under “Select the TYPE of search” you’ll want to go with the already selected “Vehicle” category. You then enter the information that’s requested to obtain the recall notice(s) that have been issued for your vehicle.

In addition to recalls, there are also technical service bulletins (also called “TSBs” or “Service Bulletins”), which are similar to recalls except that the defect(s) haven’t cropped up in enough vehicles for a recall to be issued. In other words, only a small amount of people have discovered and complained about the problem. The manufacturer lets the dealership’s service department know about the problem, and if someone brings in a vehicle with said problem to check for a possible TSB on your vehicle, again go to the NHTSA site only this time click on “Service Bulletins” and then click on “Search Technical Bulletins.” You then enter the information on your vehicle as you would when looking for a recall. Note that you can also find service bulletin and recall information for your car by using the Edmunds.com Maintenance Calculator.

3) If the above doesn’t apply and you’re going to be facing some repair bills, you should check with the local Better Business Bureau (BBB) to see if any complaints have been filed against the repair shops or dealerships you’re considering for your car’s care.

4) Ask the respective shop managers if the mechanics they employ are “ASE” (Automotive Service Excellence) certified, and in what areas (such as engine, brakes, electrical, etc.). Obviously, you only want ASE mechanics working on your car.

5) When you are going to a auto shop other than your dealer, tell the person handling your car that you want to be given an estimate before they perform the repair(s). Tell them to call you with the estimate and for your authorization before they do anything else so you can decide whether you want them to do the work.

6) Once you are given the estimates for repairs, take the time to call other service repair shops in or around where you live for estimates for the work you know you need. Be certain that you make it clear to them exactly what you need done to your vehicle. What you’re looking for is some consistency — estimates that are a lot lower than the average might not be real, whereas ones that are a lot higher could indicate a shop trying to take you to the cleaners.

7) If the shop that already has your car seems to have a fair price for the work, call them back and authorize them to make the repairs. Ask them if there is a written warranty. You might want to tell them that you’d like to have the old parts back — as confirmation that the repairs have indeed been made. Use your best judgment on this one; if you’re getting a new exhaust system, for example, you can simply look under the car to check that a new one has been installed). Finally, don’t forget to ask them when the car will be ready for pick up.

8) After the repairs are complete and you’ve gone to the shop to pick up your car, first scrutinize the bill to make sure the agreed-upon work was done and the cost is in line with the estimate. If anything looks awry, ask about it right then and there.

9) Check out your car before you drive away from the repair shop or dealership. Take it for a brief test-drive with the service advisor or the mechanic. This way, if the car still makes the “funny noise,” or “runs rough” or “pulls to the side” when you hit the brakes, he’ll be right there to witness it. Don’t take the car unless you are satisfied.

Maintenance:

1) Before you take your car in for its scheduled maintenance (“15,000-mile service,” for example), grab the owner’s manual (that little-read book that’s usually in the glovebox) and look up what services the manufacturer recommends at this particular mileage point. Usually, there will be two different schedules, one for “normal driving” and another for “severe duty” use. The latter usually is defined as the car being driven primarily for very short trips (such as for delivery use), or in very dusty or severe climate conditions.

2) Once you’ve figured out which schedule applies to your car (more often than not, it’s going to be “normal driving”), call the dealer and make an appointment for your car’s service.

3) When you take your car to the dealer, make sure that you take the owner’s manual with you. When you arrive and talk to the service advisor, chances are he/she is going to whip out some official-looking chart showing what the dealership recommends for your car’s service. This almost always happens and you are asked to do more repairs than what is required. This is how specifically dealerships make their money. It is part of America’s corporate atmosphere. And chances are the cost of this “service” is double or triple what the manufacturer’s recommended service would be. But since you’ve studied the owner’s manual and are confident that the actual maker of the car (not some easy-profit-oriented dealership) knows what the car needs, you can politely tell the advisor, “No thanks, just do what the manufacturer states.” If he balks, show him the owner’s manual and go over the actual service you want performed. At that point, his argument for transmission fluid replacement or fuel-injection cleaning for your 15,000-mile car will cease to have any validity.

4) My experience with dealerships is as follows: they charge at least double the repair rate than other outside independent repair shops. Always take it to the dealer if it is under warranty as many items are usually covered under this policy. If the Advisor informs you that you need a repair that is not covered, I would recommend to first confirm it with your Owner’s Manuel what is covered and not. Once confirmed and you need to pay out of pocket, anything related to the engine-externally and internally- have then do it while you’re under the warranty. Why? There is a rule of thumb that they can invalidate your warranty claiming the outside repair service did something that affected the future repair you may need. So this is a strong caveat!!!

If it is tire upgrades, things not related to the engine parts, then you can always get it done from outside service repair shop. First always try to negotiate with your dealership service department. Many unsuspecting owners dont realize you can get your bill down by pressing them with some pizzazz. You’re a client and want to stay this way, or sweet talk them telling the advisor to speak to the manager and get you 10-15 percent discount as a loyal customer and that you have been dealing with them for a long time- if this part is true!! Whatever it takes, more likely than none they will give you this discount because their markup at the dealership is so high it would make your head spin. Basically you’re overpaying.

After your warranty expires, and you still want to keep this vehicle, always take it to a outside repair service that handles your type of vehicle. If it is a foreign car, make sure they indicate they work on your type of vehicle. You will save yourself a heck of a lot of money not only on labor cost ( at least half) but on the cost of the specific repair by a third.

Now that you’re savvy about matters of maintenance (and repair), we’re confident that taking your car in for service won’t equate to a chance of you being taken to the cleaners.

The post How to Prevent your Dealership or Mechanic from Repair Rip Off first appeared on Nova Creations.

Steve Harvey was amazing in introducing the ArmRestor, and his usual comic side played a part in the show. Removing the change from the coin dispenser was one comic side of Steve, imitating as if he was taking the change for himself. Robert, the Inventor was also as funny, telling Steve ” Dont take my money!!!!

Unfortunate the ArmRestor episode had more competitive parts to the show. Studio filming was for 30 minutes, with more Funderdome sequences and behind the scenes. Due to Television timing, they needed to edit the episode, cutting more interesting parts than what was shown. The actual second part of the show really highlighted the product, its market, and why the product deserved the funding.

The edited parts that were not shown, displayed the reasons for the great interaction the audience had for the ArmRestor, as they were congratulating and shacking Robert’s hand after the big win.

Anyhow with this being said, we had fun on the show, the uncut parts showed off the product and we WON!!!!

Steve Harvey has been contracted by ABC in conjunction with MGM & Disney to produce a new Invention series called FUNDERDOME, similar to the Shark Tank but with twist.

The show’s novel theatrics combines studio participation to choose which Inventor’s product is most marketable and has more appeal for the audience’s own consumer use.

The show has Steve Harvey hosting, adding his personal touch of sensitivity, humor and good-fellowship. Steve Harvey is well known for his many newly created MC shows such as Family Feud, Celebrity Family Feud, Little Big Shots and now Funderdome, making him a audience viewership magnet. He draws in consumer’s because of his charismatic personality, good nature, mundane comic persona and great smile.

FUNDERDOME is a twist on the business- like show of the Shark Tank. The show allows inventor’s to be as charismatic as Steve, while engaging the audience simultaneously. With the give and go pull between Steve and the Inventor, it makes it a fun show to watch.

FUNDERDOME avoids the stuffiness that the Shark Tank sometime appears to personalize but includes the same level of excitement of the unexpected, but offers inventor’s to have their dreams come to reality.

The Inventor pitches to the audience, engaging them, if possible. The inventor must present their idea in a very limited time frame less then 2 minutes and provide as much pertinent detail of their invention as to what it is , features and benefits-if any, why it is marketable and the need for the money.

A hard proposition with less than 2 minutes, but the rewards are staggering if you win the various funding jackpots ranging from 5 digits to six digit intervals.

The pressure is immense for the Inventors but with Steve Harvey’s engagement and assistance, he steps in when needed to offer assistance to the Inventor and even questions them on their invention.

The Inventor’s show as it is called, offers both opponents to challenge each other and then decide if their pitch was receptive, gauge the audience if they appeared to like the product better and decide to cash-out. If you cash-out and the audience chose you, then you do not win the big prize, only the cash-out amount which is a fraction of the actual gross funding.

So the pressure is really on the Inventor’s to decide while assessing their performance. Wow, this can be overwhelming, but it makes for an exciting family hour of watching a great show on a Sunday night.

It is a great time to have a show to assist inventor’s to raise the cash they need to fulfill their business ideas when the economy today limits the ability to get funding from banks and others. Hats off to the Funderdome!!

For many vehicle owners, washing a car by hand is a therapeutic act as beneficial for the person’s state of mind as to the vehicle’s appearance. That’s good, because frequent washing is also the best way to maintain a new-car finish. But as simple as washing your car may seem, there are some things to watch for so that you don’t accidentally scratch or degrade the finish. Here are some basic car-washing tips:

When should I wash the car?

Don’t... wait for a layer of crud to accumulate before washing. Dead bugs, bird droppings, and chemicals from the atmosphere all leach acids that can strip away wax and eventually eat into your car’s paint. If left too long, they can cause damage that requires sanding and repainting the area to correct.

Do… wash off dead bugs, bird droppings, and tree-sap mist as soon as possible. Other than this, a weekly car wash will keep the finish in its best shape. In addition, if you live in an area that suffers from acid rain, rinse your vehicle off after a period of rainy weather. Otherwise, acidic chemicals in the rainwater will be left on the surface after the droplets have evaporated, leaving a mark that can permanently mar the paint.

What kind of products should I use?

Don’t… use household cleaning agents like hand soap, dishwashing detergent, or glass cleaner on the paint. These aren’t formulated for use on a car’s paint and may strip off the protective wax.

Do… use a dedicated car-wash product, which is milder and specifically designed for use on automotive paint. Apply the suds with a large, soft natural sponge or a lamb’s-wool mitt. (See our car wax report for tips and advice on all types of waxes.)

Grease, rubber, and road-tar deposits picked up from the road often accumulate around the wheel wells and along the lower edge of the body. These can be stubborn to remove and may require a stronger product, such as a bug-and-tar remover. Use a soft, nonabrasive cloth to remove these deposits, as they can quickly blacken your sponge.

Do… use a separate sponge to clean the wheels and tires, which may be coated with sand, brake dust, and other debris that could mar the car’s finish. Mild soap and water may work here; if not, a dedicated wheel cleaner may be required. Be sure the cleaner is compatible with the type of finish (paint, clear-coat, chrome, etc.) used on the wheels. A strong formula intended for mag wheels, for instance, can damage the clear coat that’s used on the wheels that come on today’s cars. To be on the safe side, choose a cleaner that’s labeled as safe for use on all wheels.

Are there any general guidelines I should follow when washing a car?

Don’t… wash your car when the body is hot, such as immediately after driving it or after it has been parked in direct sunlight for awhile. Heat speeds the drying of soap and water, making washing more difficult and increasing the chances that spots or deposits will form.

Don’t… move the sponge in circles. This can create light, but noticeable scratches called swirl marks. Instead, move the sponge lengthwise across the hood and other body panels. And don’t continue using a sponge that’s dropped on the ground without thoroughly rinsing it out. The sponge can pick up dirt particles that can scratch the paint.

Do… rinse all surfaces thoroughly with water before you begin washing to remove loose dirt and debris that could cause scratching. Once you begin, concentrate on one section at a time, washing and rinsing each area completely before moving on to the next one. This ensures that you have plenty of time to rinse before the soap dries. Start at the top, and then work your way around the car. Use a hose without a nozzle and let the water flow over the car from top to bottom. This creates a sheeting action that helps minimize pooling of water.

Do… work the car-wash solution into a lather with plenty of suds that provide lots of lubrication on the paint surface. And rinse the sponge often. Using a separate bucket to rinse the sponge keeps dirt from getting mixed into the sudsy wash water.

How should I dry the car when I’m done?

Don’t… let the car air dry, and don’t expect a drive around the block to do an effective job. Either will leave watermarks caused by minerals in hard water. In addition, don’t use an abrasive towel or other material that can leave hairline scratches in the paint.

Do… use a chamois (natural or synthetic) or soft terry towels. If you choose towels, you may need several. It’s best to blot the water up instead of dragging the towel or chamois over the paint. The drying process can be sped up by using a soft squeegee to remove most of the water on the body, but be sure the rubber is pliable and that it doesn’t pick up bits of dirt that can cause scratches.

The post Do’s and Dont’s of Washing your Car Yourself first appeared on Nova Creations.

You’ve scrutinized your estimate, and analyzed how each major component squares with AutoMD.com‘s “fair price” breakdown: the hours the job should take—and the shop’s and alternative shops’ hourly labor rates. You’ve checked true parts pricing online…So now you’re ready to negotiate the price before you authorize any work.

Most people simply don’t realize they can negotiate auto repair work. And while some itemized charges may stand firm (like some parts prices), others have significant wiggle-room (shop mark-ups are often as much as 200% to cover operations). Unless you’re stuck in Death Valley at the only gas station for miles, your information ammo, combined with the fact that you’ve hopefully obtained more than one estimate, should make you feel comfortable negotiating a fair price. Lots of people dread negotiation, but online, objective information is public, impersonal and printable—let it speak for you!

And presenting a “fair price” estimate really works! In a nationwide study of repair shops, over two-thirds of the shops CHANGED their price quote when presented with the AutoMD.com industry standard price.

Key negotiating tips:

* There are three types of repair businesses: dealerships, franchises like a Sears or Jiffy Lube, and independent shops. To understand your negotiating opportunity, you need to understand the business models/mentality of each: unlike most independent shops, dealerships and franchises typically use managed sales/service writers, (mechanics just perform the work), and have a more top-down management-set pricing system. Hence, with the independents, you’ll typically have a much greater opportunity to negotiate price. This doesn’t mean that all dealers and franchises are “unfair,” and all independents are “fair,” it’s just important to know for your negotiation expectations. You should still present your benchmark price or competing estimates to all three: it’s a competitive market and, even at a dealer, not all is set in stone.

* Negotiate before any work is done, when you still have the power to go elsewhere. Never assume you’ll be able to haggle after the repairs are completed. The shop can refuse to return your vehicle until your bill is fully paid.

* Ask for the “fair repair” price you’ve identified. Show your AutoMD.com print-out and/or the competing estimates. If the shop refuses to budge on an estimate that’s too high, tell them that you’ll go to another shop.

* Mechanics will often argue they’re not authorized to approve the lower price. Ask to speak to the person who is. If they can’t produce that person live or on the phone, then politely tell them you’ll need to take your business elsewhere.

What to Do When You’re at the Shop (Or While Your Car is Being Repaired)

When you’re at the repair shop, ask as many thorough, intelligent questions about the repairs that need to be done, and physically present all your research. The more interest and intelligence you show, the less likely it is that the repair shop will try to overcharge or push unnecessary repairs on you. Your best protection is being informed and involved. Never ask questions like: “Do I need a tune up?” or “Do I need new tires?” It sends a strong signal that you’re uninformed, and serves as an open invitation for a shop to recommend services that you don’t need.

* Know your vehicle’s manufacturer recommended service schedule before you go in so that you know whether or not your vehicle is due for one of the major services, such as tune-ups, oil changes and tire rotations. Stick to that schedule—not one the shop may present/recommend.

* Answer any questions the repair shop has, but don‘t volunteer unnecessary information. Avoid saying things like “This car is used by my young daughter,” “We’re going on a long road trip,” or worst of all, “Just fix whatever you think it needs.” This is analogous to giving someone permission to charge away on your credit card.

* NEVER allow your repair shop to “repair as needed.” It’s an invitation to get ripped off. While the majority of reputable shops are honest, there have been documented incidences of shops damaging parts and then charging car owners for repairing them.

* Establish your rules upfront: nothing is to be repaired until you have seen the broken or worn part, and nothing is to be replaced or fixed until you have given your permission to do so. If you leave the shop’s premises, ask the mechanic NOT to begin any repair(s) without contacting you.

*Once you sign an estimate, they must adhere to it, and no work should be done without your authorization.

* Ask the mechanic to test drive the vehicle with you—so you can explain exactly what you’re experiencing, hearing, etc. A thorough test drive can make the difference between a right and wrong diagnosis.

* It would be ideal to physically be at the shop when they’re diagnosing – and even repairing—your vehicle. Staying put makes it harder for the shop to perform unnecessary repairs, but most of us can’t realistically do that, However, don’t do approvals and business over the phone. If they call you with extra repairs, demand a detailed explanation, and then check with the AutoMD.com fair price estimate to make sure the new estimate makes sense. Go back to the shop and talk to them directly and ask to see the physical evidence.

* Whether you stay or have to leave, you should always ask to physically see each diagnosed problem. You often have a legal right to see damaged parts. This ensures two things: One, they actually did replace the part (and didn’t just clean the original part up and charge you for a replacement), and two, that the part actually needed to be replaced.

* Always request upfront that you will want all your old parts back—before any work is done. In certain states, like California, this is a binding request. If you come back later and ask for your old parts, many shops will have already disposed of them. The market is being deluged with cheap parts from China. Request name-brand replacements and ask to see all the proposed parts’ boxes before they start.

* Ask if any recommended repairs could safely be postponed. Some things are a must (to keep you safe and/or prevent further damage to your vehicle), but distinguishing between what’s critical and what you can wait on can save big bucks.

Things to Watch Out For

* Watch our for unnecessary double labor charges, i.e., with certain combinations of repairs, once one task is done, the other one essentially takes little or no time. For example, you get your alternator replaced and they charge full labor hours for replacing a belt, and you get your timing belt done and the shop charges full hours for replacing the water pump. The difference can be hours of labor that is outrageous to double-charge for.

* “Road hazard” warranties on tires can actually save money–you ruin your tires driving over a pothole, and your warranty replaces them free. But be aware of the terms: there can be hefty charges for alignments and suspension replacements in the fine print.

* Be especially on guard about estimates/parts used in brake jobs: many shops use cheap parts and mark them up. Good mechanics do not compromise on brake quality.

* Be skeptical about “unbelievable” deals like ads/offers promising $89 brake jobs. No repair shop makes money on that, but they’re going to make it up somewhere … and that somewhere is probably your wallet.

* Only buy tires when you need them: tires today have tread wear indicators built right in, which reveal when you’ve worn them down to 1/16th inch or less (the benchmark the Highway Patrol uses to write you up).

* Know the difference between a “transmission flush” and a “transmission fluid replacement”: your vehicle typically needs the fluid replacement every 30,000, 60,000 miles—but “transmission flushes” (often sold by the Quick Lubes) are almost never needed, and manufacturers don’t recommend them.

* Beware of repair shops that show you a transmission pan with metal particles in it, and then recommend a major job. The shavings are typically a symptom of normal wear.

What Do You Do If You Feel You Were Ripped Off

If you feel like you were overcharged at the repair shop where you got your car serviced or that your car wasn’t fixed properly, what steps can you take?

Tell the repair shop manager you will post comments on AutoMD.com, Yelp, etc.

Post comment on AutoMD.com

Contact the Better Business Bureau

If you are pleased with your repair shop, one of the best things you can do is strengthen and build that relationship. After all, your car is eventually going to need other repairs.

Post reviews online at AutoMD.com and other online consumer review sites

Refer the business to friends and family, and let the shop know that you have.

Glossary of Common Repair Terms

Because the auto industry speaks its own language, here’s a brief glossary of common repair terms:

Aftermarket Parts: Parts not made by the manufacturer.

Flat Fees: Services that don’t get broken down into parts, tax, labor costs.

Labor Description: A detailed written description of repairs and/or services.

Labor Rate: The shop or dealer’s hourly rate to work on your car. (Note: when you use AutoMD.com’s local shop finder—the average hourly labor rate for the relevant shops in your area is included in the listing).

Labor Time: The number of hours it will take to fix your vehicle.

Miscellaneous Charges: Can include, but not limited to, things like shop supplies (chemicals, hazardous waste disposal fees, waste oil, etc.

OEM: Original Equipment Manufacturer. This designates manufacturer-approved parts specifically built for your vehicle.

TSBs/Technical Service Bulletins: Instructions provided by the manufacturer for known concerns on your vehicle—not to be confused with an official vehicle recall.
