48.
There is no doubt that house prices are falling and that certain areas of the U.S. have become “risky” markets. Home prices have dropped more in the first quarter of this year than at any other quarter in the last 17 years. PMI Mortgage Insurance says home values may well decline across the country over the following two years.

 49.
Here’s a peak into the “risky” market areas and the stable markets, as well as some valuable tips on selling your home in this post-bubble climate.

 50.
The riskiest markets identified are those that experienced a rapid price appreciation in the previous years and were part of that real-estate bubble, which many were able to turn into the quick real estate buck by flipping houses. But with the sudden crash, they are experiences the hardest hit, with the most foreclosures:

 51.
- Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Ariz.
52. - Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, Calif.
53. - Las Vegas-Paradise, Nev.
54. - West Palm Beach-Boca Raton-Boynton Beach, Fla.
55. - Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale, Calif.
56. - Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine, Calif.
57. - Orlando-Kissimmee, Fla.
58. - Oakland-Fremont-Hayward, Calif.
59. - Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach, Fla.
60. - San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos, Calif.
61. - Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall, Fla.
62. - Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Fla.
63. - Washington, D.C.-Arlington-Alexandria
64. - Boston-Quincy, Mass.

 65.
The risk factor of these cities is calculated using a formula that incorporates data on house sales, affordability which includes per capita income, appreciation and mortgage rates and employment rates in each particular area. On a positive note, these areas where the housing market are risky still have strong employment rates which bodes well for them being able to ride this difficult tide.

 66.
Texas and the Midwest were markets that remained largely untouched by the real estate boom, and are therefore largely untouched by the current decline in real estate. These areas include:

 67.
- Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas
68. - Pittsburgh
69. - Dallas-Plano-Irvington, Texas
70. - Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, Texas
71. - Indianapolis-Carmel, Ind.
72. - Columbus, Ohio

 73.
As a seller today it’s very important to use the internet as an effective marketing tool. Prospective buyers are definitely using the Internet now more than ever. Before stepping out to an open house, buyers are more inclined to narrow down their home search using internet searches where they can see (ideally) clear, bright, professional photos of your home, complete with virtual tours. Being on the cutting edge of internet technology and having your home visually well represented is of ultimate importance. Find an agent who is savvy and willing to create a Web site for each house they represent. If you can’t find an agent who’ll do this, remember you can set up a web page yourself.

 105.
Numerous people today can be putting on the incorrect size shoe and not even realise it.

 106.
These straightforward fitting ideas could assist you in finding the ideal sized shoe whether visiting a shop or shopping online. Find a shoe just right in style size and width before you buy.

 107.
Recheck your current sizing. The majority of individuals’ feet will probably flatten as well as become longer as they age. A good method in order to discover if your feet have altered is to put on a pair of shoes bought not too long ago. In the event that the shoes seem restricted, it could be time to purchase a half-size bigger. Choose the right size to fit your larger foot. Yes, the majority of us have got one foot which is larger in size than the other.

 108.
It is a great rule of thumb to fit the shoes to your bigger foot. A shoe which is too little is considerably more likely to result in severe difficulties compared to one which is too loose. Understand also that shoe sizings are not necessarily universal between brands. The majority of sizes will stay constant inside of a single brand (for example a size 9 Men’s New Balance 621 will be the same as a size 9 New Balance Men’s 855) However sizes between brands could vary up to one full size due to manufacturing quirks and designs. If you are looking to change to a different brand from usual a good way to tell is to look at customer reviews on Amazon and see what people say about sizing.

 109.
If you choose a shoe in a shop wear the right socks. Use the socks you are going to usually put on with your new shoes. This is very important as sock thickness can certainly generate a large difference in the fit of your new shoes. Go shopping for new shoes in the afternoon as your feet will typically expand later in the day. Be sure to get some toe space. Allow approximately a fingers width (about 3/8″ to 1/2″) of space in between ones longest toe and the end of the shoe. You do not ever really want shoes which are too short or tight in the toe region so keep some wiggle room. Line up the ball of the foot. The ball of your foot ought to stay at the widest area of the shoe. This is where it is supposed to flex.

 110.
Test walking in the shoe upon carpeting in order to ensure the shoes fit without having pressure to the front of the foot. Make sure your heel is secure. Although your heel might move somewhat within shoes which are just out of the box, too much heel slippage is an indication associated with an incorrect fit. Never assume your shoes will stretch. In the event that the shoes are a bit tight right now, it really is improbable they are going to expand over a period of time. You need to feel the shoes are right from the first steps.

 146.
When investing in the markets, you will find many stock market tips being offered. These may be stock tips given through brokers who are looking to make a commission by executing a trade. You do not need to be someone standing on the sidelines watching others trading stocks and becoming wealthy from their stock picks. With a little bit of knowledge, you too could be investing in the stock market today. You will have heard many terminologies being used like technical analysis, fundamental analysis, technical indicators, and so on. Do not let these deter you from getting involved in the stock market.

 147.
Technical analysis is a method of evaluating securities by looking at the statistics they generated while being on the market. Typically, past prices and volumes are analyzed to identify patterns that may show future activity. This method believes that by looking at past prices and trends, they could indicate future performances as well. Support and resistance analysis is an important part of trends. This is because trading decisions will be based on where a trend is reversing. These support and resistance levels are carefully watched by technical analysts as they confirm and test trends. These stock market tips could save you money when you are stock picking.

 148.
Fundamental analysis mainly involves looking at revenue, expenses, assets, and liabilities of a company. This is done to get an insight of the company’s future performance. Another part of fundamental analysis includes looking at the company’s management. Its business model, the market share, industry growth, and competition are some areas analyzed. These are very important things to look into if you intend to invest in a company.
149.
150. Some investors even ask what the company does or how the sector is performing, as this will say a lot about the future scope of the company they might be investing in. Financial statements are equally important to study before you invest. You would not want to place your hard earned cash into a company, only to see it go bankrupt a few months later.

 151.
Learn how to perform chart analysis and how to use tools such as the candlestick charts. These will help you identify where a stock may reverse its trend, allowing you to buy early or get out before things decline too far. There are many more stock market tips that you can learn about if you just take the time to do research.

 196.
Everyone has seen the almost overnight success of a viral video, but are they really overnight successes? What really happens to videos to make them go viral in a short amount of time? If you want your videos to be successful and even go viral, you need to know that most viral videos do not find success as soon as they are put online. There are a few things you can do to increase the chances of your video to go viral.

 197.
You need to push for your video to be seen. This does not mean just submitting it and sharing it with a few friends. You need to submit your video to many different sites that would be interested in its content. You need to send your video to friends of friends and anyone that you can think of. Those people need to be enticed to share your video, too. Your video has to be plastered all over social networking sites and forums to gain momentum.

 198.
Post your videos at the beginning of the week. Many people start watching online videos during the week when they are bored. They may do it at work, on the subway, or on a break. Your video needs to be seen throughout the week to gain views. If you post your video on the weekend when others post their videos, they might get lost in the mix. Anyway, many people are busy on the weekends and may not be spending as much time on the Internet.

 199.
Make sure your video is something that will interest people.Your video will find the most success if it touches them in the right way, if the video is funny, or if it shares something completely unbelievable and shocking. You do not want to offend your viewers, and you definitely will not gain viewers with obscure and uninteresting things. Make sure your video is interesting and polished before submitting it online.
200. Shorter videos will be watched more than longer videos. No one wants to sit through a video that is full of extra and unimportant scenes or minutes. People want to get right to the point. Edit your video if it is too long and take out anything unnecessary. The most viral videos are often very quick and short. Do not make your video a long and drawn out process.

 201.
Make sure your video has a catchy title. The title will be one of the first things that people see. If your title isn’t interesting, then people will not want to see your video. You can have the best video in the world, but if your title does not reflect that then no one will click to see it. Take your time to come up with a suitable title and ask friends for suggestions if you are stuck. A title that is short and to the point is often the best.

 202.
Do not be afraid of criticism. There may be people who do not like your video. Remember that the more people talk about your video, the more exposure it is getting. Let people talk and have their opinions, and do not respond to people who try to say hurtful things. Let the video speak for itself and keep it in the spotlight. You will not be able to please everyone, so let the negative aspects go and focus on the positive.
203. It may take several tries before your video gains momentum, but never give up and keep promoting your content. Eventually all of your hard work and planning will pay off, and you will get the recognition that you deserve.

 243.
First time immigrants and travelers to the Philippines are always pleasantly surprised by the quality shopping and bargain – hunting opportunities in the Philippines. From the northern island of Luzon to the southern island of Mindanao, quality shopping abounds and much at a bargain.

 244.
Filipinos love their shopping malls, in part due to the ever present hot and humid weather, particularly in the months of May to November, and of course in December due to Christmas. Shops in the Philippines get into the Christmas spirit as early as the beginning of October.

 245.
I have visited most of the malls in Manila, and all the malls in Cebu and Davao, as well as many of the specialty bargain shops in these cities. Below are listed where I consider one should go to find the best shopping in the Philippines

 246.
Shopping Malls – Manila

 247.
The SM Mall of Asia

 248.
This is the largest mall in all of the Philippines, even bigger than its sister mall, SM Megamall, and is the third largest mall in all the world in terms of gross floor area. There is even an indoor skating rink. This is a must for not only seeing all indigenous Philippine products under one roof, but also for a complete array of imported goods such as perfumes, clothing, jewelry, and electronic items, often a lower prices than in other countries. Visiting this mall is a must.

 249.
Makati Glorietta

 250.
This mall if for those looking for the best in signature designer goods, and at the best possible prices. It is located in the upscale and affluent Makati area, which is the financial capital of the Philippines, nearby all the upscale hotels. This is definitely the affluent and hip-hop shopping area of the country.

 251.
Greenhills Shopping Center

 252.
This is my favorite Manila mall for bargain shopping. It is famous for bargain furniture, clothes, automotive, electronics and computer items.

 253.
It is located. It is located in the Greenhills area of Manila, nearby the Shangri La hotel and the Holiday Inn Galleria Hotel.

 254.
168 Shopping Mall

 255.
For the really adventurous shopper, the real bargain hunter, this is your place. It is only for the daring shopper. It is full of air conditioned stalls, but it is located in a dirty and polluted environment in Divisoria, and is referred to as the “bargainville of Manila”. Items like RTW are 40% to 50% cheaper than the identical items sold in the Greenhills and other malls.

 256.
Mananzan Handicraft Shop

 257.
This is not a mall, but I have to include it any shoppers list, as this is the place to go for Philippine handicrafts and souvenirs. They are at very reasonable prices and you are never pressured or pestered to buy. Visiting here is a great way to spend an afternoon.

 258.
Shopping Mall – North Luzon

 259.
Subic Port

 260.
If you are in North Luzon, this is the place to shop. It is the best in duty free shopping. It has great bargains for products coming from the USA, Europe and Asia. Subic was a former US Naval base which has been turned into a Free Trade Zone.

 261.
Shopping Mall – Cebu City

 262.
Ayala Mall

 263.
As close as you can get to Manila shopping, this relatively new mall if full of local Visayan handicraft bargains as well as the latest fashions from the USA, Europe and Asia. It is the upscale area of Cebu City, near the Cebu Waterfront, the Shangri La, and the Marriott hotels. Big, yet comfortable, with lots of good restaurants and easy to get around. One of my favorites.

 264.
Shopping Malls – Davao City

 265.
New City Commercial Center Mall

 266.
This is a newly established shopping mall, stocked with all the latest goods, both domestic and imported. However, Malls in Davao do not have all the upscale designer label, signature type goods you find in Manila.

 267.
SM Shoemart Mall

 268.
SM Shoemart is a national chain of high quality shopping malls. There are many SM Shoemart stores in Manila, but in Cebu and Davao they have been expanded into complete shopping malls. You can find the best in both soft goods, such as clothing, and in hard goods such as electronics and furniture.

 269.
Victoria Plaza Mall

 270.
Victoria Plaza is a shopping center with only two floors, yet its floor space is large and it is reputed to be Mindanao’s biggest shopping center. It has all the shops and services one would expect in a large mall, to include airline and shipping ticketing offices, a supermarket, a department store, food shops, boutiques and restaurants, jewelry shops, a business center and movie theaters.

 286.

I once listened in to a conversation over the radio where the presenter and co-presenter discussed lightly about job satisfaction. Although as an assumption, the co-presenter casually stated that a staggering 99.9% of people were dissatisfied with their jobs. The statement may have been a perception given its lack of researched evidence, but it did get me wondering. How important is the feeling that people have towards their jobs?Well in human resource planning, employee job satisfaction is a big deal. It is big enough to influence the work output of employees as well as a force to reckon with when it comes to influencing company productivity.Lots of research has been done to get to the bottom of job dissatisfaction, and here are some of the underlying factors:1. Relationship with supervisors – this is vital to the development and retention of an employee as supervisors are responsible for mentoring new employees and ensuring they adapt well with the work environment. A happy employee will eventually bring in his ‘A’ game and if relationships run sour at the initial stages, he or she will likely not build the satisfaction that will give the momentum to stay on.
287. 2. Recognition for job performance – Employers who do not give credit where it is due will be at risk of losing reliable and high quality employees. By giving recognition, employers spark motivation among their employees which translates to satisfaction of the service they deliver every day.
288. 3. Lack of a professional development policy – Professional development has a motivation element to it in that employees appreciate their employer’s commitment to their development. A level of satisfaction is also felt among employees as professional training tends to rid of redundancies and changes attitudes towards work.
289. 4. The lack of an organization’s commitment to good working conditions – Employers should make an audacious plan to ensure poor working conditions do not lead to below average performance. It is not a secret that deplorable working conditions result in physical inconveniences and disrupts both physical and mental well- being. This plainly affects attitudes and in a big way influences job dissatisfaction.
290. 5. Lack of good compensation – This is undoubtedly the number one cause of job dissatisfaction. Whether passionate, highly skilled or at a novice level, employers work for money. Hence if an employer gets an opportunity with higher remuneration, they will definitely quit. Therefore, employers need to offer salary increments, bonuses, and even financial incentives if they expect to retain their highly skilled workforce.Driving the agenda towards attaining job satisfaction should fall in place as priority if the factors are genuine. Both employers and stakeholders have a duty to provide a good work environment as required. Alternatively, they could as well ignore and face their own peril.

 327.

Introduction to digital photographyMake no mistake, digital photography is here, it’s big, and it’s the way things will be from now on. People use digital photography in their work every day:- police officers, real estate agents, insurance agents, fire fighters, scientists and doctors, just to name a few.Digital photography has come a long way in a few years. Digital photography, as opposed to film photography, uses electronic devices to record and capture the image as binary data. Digital photography has also been adopted by many amateur snapshot photographers, who take advantage of the convenience of the form when sending images by email, placing them on the World Wide Web, or displaying them in digital picture frames.Digital photography was used in astronomy long before its use by the general public and had almost completely displaced photographic plates by the early 1980s. Digital photography enables you to experiment with the camera settings, different styles of images can be tried out, learn t from and techniques improved all without the expense of film processing. Some other devices, such as mobile phones, now include digital photography features. With the acceptable image quality and the other advantages of digital photography (particularly the time pressures of vital importance to daily newspapers) the majority of professional news photographers have begun capturing their images with digital cameras.Other commercial photographers, and many amateurs, have enthusiastically embraced digital photography because they believe that its flexibility and lower long-term costs outweigh its initial price disadvantages. Almost all of the cost of digital photography is capital cost, meaning that the cost is for the equipment needed to store and copy the images, and once purchased requires virtually no further expense outlay. The biggest advantage of digital photography over traditional film include: Instant review of pictures, with no wait for the film to be developed: if there’s a problem with a picture, the photographer can immediately correct the problem and take another picture. For more info Click Here

 343.

There can be little doubt that investors have been pondering this question since the general public began active participation in stock investing. To add to the dilemma, Wall Street and Wall Street affiliated firms spend massive amounts of money pushing the newest and hottest investment-of-the-week. I think that it is important to realize that Wall Street’s goals and investors goals are not necessarily congruent.Of course, there has never been a shortage of scandals that have bedeviled Wall Street, and investors have generally ended up on the short end of the deal. Whether it was the recent financial meltdown that was a direct result of improper mortgage risk assessment by Wall Street bankers whose primary goal was to repackage the mortgages and sell them at a profit, as the recent credit evolved, or the never ending push to bring new, innovative, and profitable investments to the investing public, regardless of the welfare of the public. You must understand that Wall Street is dedicated to making money for its shareholders, and is definitely not worthy of investors blind trust.Against that backdrop, we must attempt to answer the question posed in the title of this article. What is the best investment strategy for every individual has to be considered on a case-by-case base. As a general rule of thumb, traditional thinking dictates that the farther you, as an investor, are from the time you will require the use of the money, the longer your investment horizon should range. But recent years have brought some change to that mode of thinking.Let me first issue a disclaimer, of sorts: I have been a long time institutional investor for most of my professional career. I was a swing trader in those days, and my trades ranged from one trading session to several weeks. In the last eight years I have narrowed the scope of my investing to primarily intraday trading, using scalping methodology. My average investment horizon is now about 15 minutes. Wow! That is a real change in investment thinking; but I am in all cash every night and I sleep like a baby.Where it 20 years ago, I would strongly recommend that younger investors take a long term approach to their investment strategy. I don’t feel that way anymore, for several reasons:- The ultra-fast dissemination of news through social media and traditional media has literally brought the world into our living rooms. By the same token, the markets receive data and react to that data nearly instantaneously. There can be no doubt that the rapid transmission of information across the globe has added a volatility component into the market that did not exist in prior decades.- Computer based trading programs, also called black box trading, and has had a profound effect on the price action of all highly liquid investments. High Frequency Trading (HFT) operators claim that, under current technology, they can execute 3,000 trades per minute. Further, the NYSE currently estimates that in the area of 50% of all trading fall under the category of HFT. This change of trend in trading has definitely affected the personality and performance of investment practices of the last 6-8 years.- Mutual funds, which are strictly longer term investment vehicles (excluding the ETF variety of mutual fund); have consistently underperformed their corresponding index returns with unprecedented uniformity. Last year, nearly 85% of all open end mutual funds failed to match their index benchmarks. Is long term investing dead? No, not necessarily. But the days of buying the current hot stock and then forgetting about it are long gone. Price volatility has driven the market to lavish highs and unprecedented lows, which has caused long term investing to be viewed as a far less attractive investment choice than in prior times. That is also my viewpoint.I manage my portfolio with a 2-year investment horizon. Given the current state of affairs in the world (two wars, the housing crisis, Japans nuclear issues, the euro crisis, the US economy), I am confident looking ahead only a couple of years, and the once vaunted USA economy cannot be counted on, at the present time, to churn out double digit returns. I feel this approach is well considered and realistic, given the current geo-political problems we are currently experiencing. So I have discouraged longer term investing, suggesting smaller investors concentrate on the intermediate term. I have taken the time to mention that I am interested in intraday (or, day trading) and most of my current investment (or trading) income comes from intraday trading. I prefer short term trading and about half of my portfolio in straight stock investing. I have outlined the reasons for this above. While short term investing takes a bit more time and effort than intermediate or long term investing, the rewards may be well worth the effort. In summary, we have taken some time to look at the pros and cons of long-term investing, intermediate investing, and short term investing. I have stated that in my current economic outlook, I am shunning long term investing in favor of investing with a shorter-term outlook.

 387.

There is a whole field of career opportunities out there that most people don’t even realize exists. But it won’t be a secret for much longer. If you can keep a calm head in an emergency, are organized and detail-oriented, and can manage relationships, then a career in emergency management and security might be perfect for you. When an emergency of some kind happens, the people we usually see are the first responders – police, firefighters and paramedics. However, when a large event occurs, like a gas spill, a train derailment, a terrorist attack, a forest fire or an earthquake, there is a whole team of people running the show from behind the scenes. And that’s where the emergency management profession comes in.This field is one that very few people know about, so competition for jobs is low, and salaries tend to be high. The demand for qualified people to fill these positions is growing in an economy where many career fields are suffering. Why?Population increases mean more and more people are living in areas where a disaster is likely to occur – like near forest fire, flood and earthquake hazard zones. Climate change is also affecting the incidence of and locations of emergencies and is bringing the importance of emergency planning and response to light. We’re living in an age where domestic and international security concerns are high. And, there is a growing recognition of the need to implement solid business continuity practices to ensure businesses can weather emergencies and disasters.Who Are Emergency Managers? For many years, first responders were the same people who fulfilled behind-the-scenes roles as emergency managers. They juggled both the responsibilities of emergency management and their main job duties. They didn’t necessarily have specific training in the field, and because emergency management duties were “off the side of the desk,” they didn’t get the attention they deserved.Today, emergency and disaster response departments are discovering the advantages of appointing positions to strictly oversee the emergency management function – someone whose attention isn’t divided. This opens up a whole field of careers for people who aren’t first responders, but who would thrive in a job where they are just as instrumental in saving lives, preserving our environment, and protecting people and assets from disaster. What Are Some of the Jobs in this Field? Depending on your training, experience and education, there are several career paths you can take. The most common job titles include:

 388.
Emergency Program Coordinator
389. Disaster Planning Specialist
390. Director of Safety and Security
391. Manager of Security
392. Business Continuity Specialist
393. Risk Management SpecialistEmergency Program Coordinator: One career path is as an or emergency program coordinator for your local city or municipality. In this role, you will put together and update the community’s emergency plan, which will include an analysis of hazards and risks in the area, and strategies for prevention, mitigation, response and recovery. In layman’s terms, the plan will answer the following questions:

 394.
What types of emergencies is my community vulnerable to? Are we located in an earthquake zone? Do many trains carrying hazardous materials run through our community? If it rains too much, are we vulnerable to mud slides?
395. What strategies can we put in place to prevent emergencies from taking place altogether – or mitigate their effects if they do happen? Should we restrict building permits in mud slide areas? Clear dead trees in forest fire zones? Outline clear disaster response routes?
396. How will the community manage the response if an emergency does occur? Where will we set up an Emergency Operations Centre (a location from which an emergency can be managed)? Who should be involved – do we need representatives from first response agencies, hydro, forestry, First Nations? How will they be trained and know how to work together?
397. Where will the general public go if an emergency happens? Do we have a team of trained Emergency Social Services workers to ensure that receptions centres are set up and staffed?
398. When the emergency is over, how will the community recover? Are many people, animals and businesses displaced? Has infrastructure, such as roads, hydro or railways been disrupted? Will we need to liaise with non-profit disaster organizations for recovery assistance? You will also be responsible for setting up and maintaining the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), developing relationships with individuals, businesses, and organizations in your community, and managing training and exercise programs. For example, during planning for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, the City of Vancouver ran several exercises simulating emergency events that could happen. These exercises helped identify gaps in training or skills that could then be remedied prior to the event.Where Else Are Emergency Program Coordinators Employed? Today, you will find emergency management specialist positions in many organizations, including colleges, universities, hospitals, healthcare organizations, utility companies and private businesses like shopping centres and hotels. In these organizations the duties are similar – you still create the emergency management plan, develop relationships and arrange training and exercise programs – but the difference is that your main audience is not the residents of your community, but the staff, students, customers or tenants at your organization. Your job is to make sure plans are in place to protect your people and property before, during and after an emergency. An additional function in these positions is business continuity. Often, you will create a business continuity plan to ensure that key organizational functions can continue if a disaster occurs and you will be able to get business processes back up and running as soon as possible after an incident. For example, you may make plans to duplicate and store important computer data, such as student, customer or accounting records, at a secure second location – so if there is a fire, flood or other incident, you will still be able to access files. This role has become so important in recent years that some organizations hire specific business continuity specialist positions.Specialist Positions: In addition to the positions mentioned above, many larger communities employ specialized positions such as:

 399.
Emergency Social Services Director
400. Emergency Social Services Volunteer Coordinator
401. Search and Rescue Manager
402. Training Specialist
403. Exercise Design CoordinatorAdditionally, many international not-for-profit organizations assist in helping communities respond to and recover from emergencies and disasters. These organizations are numerous, ranging from well-known associations such as the Red Cross and St. John’s Ambulance to lesser known organizations focused on a specific area, such as large animal disaster response. Many rewarding career opportunities are available with these organizations, such as:

 404.
Disaster Planning Assistant
405. Disaster Relief Coordinator
406. Volunteer CoordinatorThe Merging Fields of Emergency Management and Security So where does security come in? Historically, the fields of emergency management and security were separate. The emergency manager created plans around natural disasters and emergencies, whereas the security manager or director of safety and security would be responsible for keeping the campus, workplace or community safe from criminal activity. However, over the last 10 years, these fields have been merging, especially with private organizations, such as universities, hospitals, and utility and transportation companies.Today, many organizations have created departments that combine these functions. In other organizations the roles are combined. In addition to the emergency management functions described above, in these combined roles you can be expected to be in charge of or coordinate standard security functions, such as:

 407.
Perimeter and building security systems and procedures
408. Managing security guards
409. Risk analysis and management
441.

Over the last 15 years I have worked with hundreds of managers, including team leaders and supervisors, in organizations of all shapes and sizes. Many of those managers were, by their own admission, reluctant to manage. Of course on a day by day basis they did manage people – they answered questions, allocated work, went to management meetings, and held some team briefings. But what they most often didn’t do is apply a focused and structured approach to managing their staff’s performanceIn theory, managers know they should be managing performance, that they should be using the review or appraisal system, and that they should be having dynamic discussions with their staff about their performance. But clearly there’s an obvious difference between knowing you should do something and actually doing it. And when managers don’t manage, the business suffers and so do their staff. So what’s the answer? These are five steps I’ve seen applied, by my clients, with very positive effect:Step One – Help managers to understand why performance management is important to the businessDo managers need help in understanding the value of managing performance? Do they need to understand why effective performance management is a critical commercial issue and how effective performance management impacts business success? Only through getting this clarity can a manager gain the confidence that there will be some real business benefit derived from their efforts. Otherwise, why bother?Step Two – Help managers understand why performance management is important to their staffDo managers know that research shows that what people seem to want, and want quite badly, is to be well managed? That they want a strong, mutually supportive relationship with their manager based on interest and clarity? Much of what ‘well managed’ means is effective performance management. The manager’s role in the satisfaction and the engagement of their staff can’t be overstated but often needs to be explained.Step Three – Help managers to embrace their right to manage performanceFrequently the managers I work with seem to feel the need to gain permission to undertake probably the most important part of their role – managing performance. They clearly know there are expectations of them as managers but they don’t feel they have somehow earned the right to manage. Do managers need to understand the rights they have to manage? Do they know what those rights look like in practice?Step Four – Give managers the tools and techniques they need to manage people’s performanceDo managers have access to a range of tools and techniques which can make the seemingly complex much, much simpler? How can we expect managers to know, for example, that there is a simple way to give feedback about even the most ‘difficult’ performance issue so that the issue can be understood and accepted by the staff member? Managers just do not have the time to work these processes out for themselves so they either waste a lot of time (and staff good will) on ‘trial and error’ or they just give up.Step Five – Ensure that managing performance is a top priority for your managersDo managers have ‘managing performance’ listed in their job description, their job objectives or anywhere else? I have heard hundreds of managers tell me that there is nothing written down or agreed that describes their responsibilities as a performance manager. So why would a manager dedicate time and effort to an activity for which they are not held accountable, for which there is no reward, which appears to be just about the lowest priority of the business? How can organisations expect their managers to undertake the complex work of managing their staff’s performance if:a) the manager does not know what being an effective performance manager looks like ipractice in their organisation
442. b) the manager is not held accountable for the effective performance management of their staff – it is not seen as an integral part of their job but something to be done when all of the ‘real work’ has been completed
443. c) they are not acknowledged or rewarded for effective performance management? In summaryIt’s all about developing the ‘will’ and the ‘skill’. Helping managers to understand the importance of effective performance management, helping them develop the skills and then holding them accountable for applying those skills in practice
