<a name='more'></a>Without question, this follow-up to Quicksilver Messenger Service's self-titled debut release is the most accurate in portraying the band on vinyl in the same light as the group's critically and enthusiastically acclaimed live performances. The album is essentially centered around the extended reworkings of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?" and "Mona," as well as the lesser lauded -- yet no less intense -- contribution of Gary Duncan's (guitar/vocals) "Calvary." This album is the last to feature the original quartet incarnation of QMS. The collective efforts of John Cipollina (guitar/vocals), Greg Elmore (percussion), David Freiberg (bass/vocals), and the aforementioned Duncan retain the uncanny ability to perform with a psychedelic looseness of spirit, without becoming boring or in the least bit pretentious.
The side-long epic "Who Do You Love?" suite is split into an ensemble introduction and coda as well as four distinct sections for the respective bandmembers. The perpetually inventive chops of QMS are what is truly on display here. The musicians' unmitigated instrumental prowess and practically psychic interaction allow them to seamlessly weave into and back out of the main theme. Yet all the while, each player takes center stage for uncompromising solos. "Mona" and its companion, "Calvary," continue in much the same fashion. Here the members of QMS play off each other to form a cohesive unit. This track also contains some of Cipollina's finest and most memorable fretwork. He is able to summon sonic spirits from his guitar in a way that is unlike any of his Bay Area contemporaries. A prime example of his individuality is the frenetic "Maiden of the Cancer Moon" -- ascending from the remnants of "Mona." The angst and energy in Cipollina's guitar work and line upon line of technical phrasing could easily be considered the equal of a Frank Zappa guitar solo. The brief title track, a cover of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans' "Happy Trails," seems almost insignificant in the wake of such virtuoso playing. It clears the sonic palette and also bids adieu to this particular fab foursome of psychedelia.

Strange, the beginning of the first track reminds me of keyboard intro in ''Tarot Woman'' from Rainbow ''Rising'' (released 3 years later). Despite influences I DALTON don't sound like any other band I know. Songs on ''Riflessioni: Idea d'Infinito'' are always energetic, even in slower parts. The whole album is concentrated energy filled with melodies. And it has the quality I value most of all - it attracts your attention from the first note to the very end. Powerful and elegant, I DALTON debut album, unfortunately generally overlooked, deserves to stay in the same row as well-known RPI classics like PFM's ''Storia di un minuto'' and ''Per un amico'' or ''Uomo di pezza'' by Le Orme. Essential in any good RPI collection. Highly recommended. Very close to 5 stars. OK, 5 stars. Released in 1972, this was his second solo album although it was credited to "Jeremy Spencer and the Children", referring to his band made up of members of the Children of God organisation.<a name='more'></a> After leaving Fleetwood Mac while on tour in the United States in February 1971, Spencer joined the Children of God and has remained with the organisation ever since. The band toured in the US and released a single Can You Hear The Song / The World In Her Heart to accompany this album. The lyrics were heavily religious, with references to the love of God, finding purpose in life within Christianity, along with anti-war themes and apocalypticism. Although this was the first recording for which Spencer dropped his mimicry and parody of 1950s music and Elmore James blues tunes, he nevertheless continued to show his talent for drawing inspiration from other styles of music. Considering that this is a debut album, the compositional and playing strength is jaw-dropping.<a name='more'></a> Keyboard dominates over guitar. Drums are versatile and complex. There are even some avantgarde moments. The second track is more experimental featuring also instrumental solos and is more ELP influenced. "Rincon, mi viejo rincon" is a mellow simple track with lush keyboards. The vocal is decent but does not exceed the instruments. The three pronged guitar attack of Webb, <a name='more'></a> Anderson and Blunt soon had venues rocking and EMI put the money up for the bands debut album. &nbsp;The album hit the streets to great reviews and Broken Glass seemed on their way to fame and fortune the quality of the Webb, &nbsp;Anderson, Bunt compositions was exceptional but as often beset bands in the Seventies &nbsp;problems with management ensued and the project collapsed. &nbsp;The legacy of Broken Glass is only one great album available here for the first time. --------------------------------------------- Following his sojourn with Savoy Brown, Stan's next recorded output was with Broken Glass. This featured Robbie Blunt on guitar, and also Miller Anderson. This was recorded in 22 days in November 1975 and released the following month. Now this album has some significance for later Chicken Shack recordings as at least two tracks are re-recorded and renamed later on. It's Alright becomes So Far Back on Roadies Concerto (available on the Black Night CD) whilst Take the Water has an even more interesting future as will be explained later. They did a really nice job on this.... Kims guitar playing Terrys Keys, Mikes Bass and Garys drumming all stand out far more than they do on the original CD releases...no freakin' contest boys and girls! Also very nice is the booklet with a lot of conversation with Mitchell and Terry Brown about how the whole thing went down. Hearing this again remastered for the first time was very close to hearing it the first time on vinyl...lots of details are brought out to be heard separately in all their glory. This my friends is a job well done and if anyone out there was as impressed with this band back in the day should seriously invest in these new remasters, to me they are well worth the $ involved here! That coin drop at about 2:40 into the song Gravity ( for those who remember it ) is astoundingly clear....just saying... Everything is way less murky ...everything...Kim plays tons of really nice acoustic guitar I never really heard until now! This is a real rarity that should be of note to fans of The Strawbs. This album was the last version of Dalton
and different than the one who made the previous album. "Argitari" has
about two songs that are symphonic prog and the rest of the album is
more prog folk and pop to my ears. It's a nice album featuring Italian
vocals, acoustic guitars, flutes, keyboards, and laid back rhythm
section. Most of the tracks are mellow with just a few rockers.<a name='more'></a> 
 
The
harder songs have almost a Jethro Tull feel although I don't believe
the playing here is to the level of Tull. The rest of the album reminds
me of The Strawbs "Grave New World" album and maybe a little of the band
Stackridge. There is even a cover of Dylan's "Blowin in the Wind" here
with different lyrics written by Mogol. 
An important note: This
album was made while the band was disbanding and the flute player had
already left. Thus the original vinyl version of the album was
apparently missing some of the flute parts, a very key part of this
album, and there were other serious production/mix related problems as
well. Thus the original album was a bit of a disaster and was criticized
accordingly. The new CD re-issue has fixed the production problems, and
the original flautist has completed the missing flute parts and added
them to this release. So the new version is the music the way it was
originally intended to be heard. How cool! 
 
The
Vinyl Magic reissue is a beauty as usual, with a very heavy, gorgeous
gatefold mini-LP sleeve, good sound, and an excellent booklet with
photos, lyrics, and a band history. I can't claim this is a masterpiece
but I do think it's a very interesting, unique album that's worth the
money for Italian fans and for fans of the folk rock bands mentioned
above who can handle Italian vocals. Four bonus tracks are also

A stunning assembly of highly talented musicians have gathered around
Stelios Petrakis, an outstanding young composer and a virtuoso of the
lyra, Crete's emblematic instrument. Powerful, poetic melodies and
lyrics mark this musical suite evoking sun and wind, the ancestral
elements at the basis of Cretan culture. Orion fell in love with
Pleione, whose daughters were changed into stars (the Pleiades). Ancient
myths and symbols, sun and light, the disappearance of evil and the
struggle for an inaccessible ideal--all contributed to this album
dedicated to the legendary hunter of Greek mythology, now one of the
most prominent constellations in the night sky.<a name='more'></a>

I first became aware of Mr. Petrakis through his work with Ross Daly, and purchased this on a whim. 
Glad I did. The audio cut for the samples in no way does the full tracks justice. 
 
I read the phrase "Polishing the Diamond" in an interview with Bill
Bruford (Yes, King Crimson, Earthworks jazz drummer). That is the best
depiction of what Stelios has done with this album; all his work with
multi-cultural multi-instrumentalists has been applied to this fruit
(Orion) to perfection. 
 
I tend to find much of Greek &amp; Cretan music to be riotously festive;
whirling chains of melodies to a very solid, interesting beat. Two
great additions on this disc is common use of bagpipes, and the use of
flamenco guitar. To include all the instruments used would be insane.
Generally, the album includes rhythm, string, and wind instruments from
Greece, Crete, Turkey, Spain, India, northern Africa, Iran, eastern
Europe, and the western classical tradition. 
 
What's striking about this album (that doesn't happen as much in the
cultural music) is it's blended, symphonic sound. World artists, in
collaboration, seem to like to add their musical "two cents" at all
times; leading to everyone jamming out very well, but negating a
project's possible breadth. In doing so, the players are very good at
creating tracks with a single essence or feeling. This album has a much
more premeditatively-symphonic sound; as if many different musical roads
&amp; ideas were traveled and ruminated upon before deciding the
application within the tune. Any given track will have parts when
'these' instruments play, but 'those' don't, for example, and vice
versa. Additionally, each instrumentalist's skills are highlighted, but
never dominating for extended periods of time. 
 
Walking through the first four tracks, it's a fantastic Cretan-style
album. But, tracks 5 and 6 are the exception that take it to another
level. The former starting out with a most wonderful flamenco-style
intro, into beautifully-sung verses, upheld by subtle guitar and
slow-rolling bendir (frame drum) beat. The lyrical nature of the melody
is accentuated during the chorus harmonies of lyra, cello, and flute.
Track 6 has guitar pioneering the way in the beginning as well, breaking
into high-speed Balkan-esque folk nature in no time. Despite the 8 1/2
minute length of the track, it never feels repetitive, continuously
moving through a series of different melody variations and choice
instruments. 
 
Everything I love about the Mediterranean sound, coupled with other
elements: flamenco, carnatic (south Indian), Persian, and Balkan. All
elements are applied with first-rate production quality, and in complete
service of the music as a whole. Maybe the only concerning thing for
Stelios Petrakis is that, after making an album of this magnitude, where
does one go from here?

Time
is an album by Steeleye Span. The album was released in 1996, after a
seven year hiatus. The impetus for the album was a 25th anniversary
reunion tour the year before, during which most of the former members of
the band performed together. Maddy Prior was experiencing voice problems so she spoke to Gay Woods,
a founding member who had left the band after the first album, to
rejoin. Woods initially resisted this move, since she had not performed
publicly for some time, but Prior eventually prevailed and Woods
returned to the band. The result was only the second Steeleye Span album to feature two female singers,
which was used to very good effect on the ironic "Old Maid in the
Garrett" and to a lesser extent on "The Prickly Bush" and "The Cutty
Wren". Both Prior and Woods provide lead vocals on different songs.<a name='more'></a>
Prior’s voice troubles are reflected in her musical choices on this
album; she generally sings less powerfully and in a lower range, but
still effectively. Woods also introduced a few Irish elements to the
band’s repertoire, including the "Old Maid in the Garrett/Tam Lin reel"
and her bodhran. This album was to be Prior’s last album with Steeleye
Span until 2004’s They Called Her Babylon. 
 
In some ways, the album represents a revival of Steeleye Span. After a
16 year period during which the band released only three albums, the
band entered a more productive phase that continues down the present,
producing an album once every two years, including two in 2004. 
 
The song "Corbies" is a remake of "Twa Corbies", which appears on Hark!
The Village Wait. The theme of "The Cutty Wren" had also been explored
before, in the song "The King" on Please to See the King, as well in
"Hunting the Wren" on Live at Last. In this version, the band
experimented with a complex scheme of vocal and instrumental placement,
which is best appreciated with headphones. Overall, this version is much
darker than "The King" and somewhat menacing. 
 
The album's sound is rather fuller and more lush than their earlier
albums, thanks in part to the addition of Harries' keyboards on several
sounds, most notably "Corbies" and "The Elf Knight".(from wikipedia.org)

Scented Gardens for the Blind, along with their first album Universal Radio, is in the progressive rock genre-all subsequent albums are hard rock/pop rock. "Vermillion [sic] Cellars" was released as a single in March and was followed by non-album singles, "Education" in May and "Star Kissed" in August but neither albums nor singles had any local chart success.<a name='more'></a> The title of New Zealand author Janet Frame's fourth novel was Scented Gardens for the Blind (1963). In 1994 the album was re-released as a CD. By 1974 the band featured two more members, singer/acoustic guitarist Richard Kersten and keyboardist Norbert Abels.The addition of Kersten, which became also the band's main composer, resulted to a change of name, now Wanyietula were Galaxy, and musical direction.This period is represented with four long tracks, between 10 and 13 minutes, where keyboards and melody play also a significant role in Wanyietula's sound.Their style now was somewhere between ELOY, NEKTAR and MESSAGE, sounding more like an English than a German band.Nice psychedelic guitars are blended with expressive vocals and interesting moog solos to result an approach with elements from both Psychedelic Rock and 70's Classic Prog styles.Instrumental parts are still a great part of the band's music with a bit loose arrangements. As Galaxy they released only one album (shortly after which Kersten left the band) and then the crew switched the name back to the original Wanyietula.However the band never returned to the early Wanyietula style, on the opposite we are talking about 1978 here and the second Wanyietula formation had fully transmitted into a late-70's Symphonic Rock band.Two tracks from this period are great examples of this fact.Very close to the likes of ANYONE'S DAUGHER or AMENOPHIS, Wanyietula's music was now very refined with emotional arrangements full of interesting guitar melodies and synth explorations, while the band used the multi-vocal harmonies and distorted vocal lines more and more.The presence of the some piano inteludes is also another new enrty, yet the sound remained fairly progressive and quite adventurous. This album holds both significant historical and musical interest.A rather unknown band is fully presented here from their very early stage and sound to its transformation into a Melodic Prog act, most of the tracks are satisfying and there is also a very nice booklet with the history of the band along with rare photos of the members, making ''Iron city'' at least a recommended purchase, especially for fans of non-standard German Kraut/Prog with a flexible sound. Released in December 1971, &nbsp;"Thoughts Of Movin' On" was their fifth album, &nbsp;and appeared on the legendary Vertigo imprint in the UK. It makes its long-overdue CD debut here.<a name='more'></a>------------------------------- The album neatly spits in two halves, with side one generally containing the upbeat numbers, and side two the ballads and powerful slower songs. The opening "Take it slow" was released as a reasonably successful single in the US and Canada, the strong hook making it the obvious choice. "Fly my aeroplane", "Rockin' chair" and "What gives you the right" continue the upbeat radio friendly pop rock sound the band had adopted for the previous album ("One fine morning"). "I just wanna be your friend" was also released as a single, the Three Dog Night like harmonic arrangement making for an instantly appealing, if largely unchallenging song. "Walk me down" sees the pace drop for this delicate ballad with lush mellotron orchestration. The late Bob McBride's vocal here is one of the finest he recorded during his time with the band. The track sets the mood for much of the second side, which has the longer, generally slower songs. "You and me" is another reflective ballad with good keyboard work and a CSNY sound. The track plays out with some nice flute. If side was primarily upbeat, with one ballad, side two's softer atmosphere is interrupted by the Russ Ballard like "Insane". "I'd be so happy" is a wonderful power ballad which the aforementioned Three Dog Night truncated and included on their "Hard Labor" album. The strong song writing here is complemented by a superb arrangement. The album closes with "I'm gonna try to make it", another reflective piece featuring a strong brass arrangement and melodic harmonies. "Thoughts of moving on" does exactly what it says on the tin. It finds Lighthouse moving in a more commercial direction while retaining their emphasis on strong arrangements and tight performances. While the album does not offer anything particularly challenging it does represent a highly enjoyable experience. A five-piece band consisting of very good and capable musicians from Rome, Alberomotore (or Albero Motore as it was sometimes referred to) were aided and produced by the 1960s singer/guitarist Ricky Gianco. At different stages of their career, they were involved with various acts such as Il Ritratto di Dorian Gray, Raccomandata con Ricevuta di Ritorno, Samadhi, Goblin, Libra, Quella Vecchia <a name='more'></a>Locanda and Carnascialia. On "Il grande gioco" they collaborated with Gianco (owner of the Ultima Spiaggia label), Carlo Siliotto (Carnascialia), Giuliano Illiani (also known as Donatello, a well-known Italian singer), Luigi Cinque, who played with Banco del Mutuo Soccorso for awhile, and Gianni Nebbiosi. For this album the band recorded tracks that might not be immediately recognizable as classic Italian prog, and instead having a rural and genuinely hard-rocking edge, full of suspense, showcasing the excellent, rough and ready vocals of Maurizio Rota. Also the record has solid musical continuity and is still an excellent listen all these years later. Cheval Fou was led by Michel Peteau, the man also responsible for Nyl. It's album has received very favourable reviews. Where Nyl are more space rock, Cheval Fou is much more Krautrock. This despite of Cheval Fou being French. <a name='more'></a> The music here is a mix of spaced out kraut and some plodding spaced out avant-garde. The sound is not particular good and I am not "accusing" this band of hiring the best studio in the world when this album was recorded. But the music still has this dirty cosmic outer space sound. The seventy-five minutes here are pretty varied and not all is great. But the best stuff here from the fifteen minutes to fifty minutes mark is great. The worst, the beginning and the end is as interesting as listening to a vacuum cleaner. Overall; this album is good and worth checking out. Over all it sounds more like a demo than a proper album. the final (bonus) track is a live recording of rather mediocre quality. Brigade won the KLSN Radio Portland Teen Fair Battle Of The Bands on 9th June 1968 and received a 1954 custom purple Cadillac Hearse as a prize! By now they were a top local attraction and the same year they signed to the American Record Company <a name='more'></a>and recorded a demo which received a lot of local airplay. They went on to record an album for the B&amp;V (Band 'n' Vocal) label in 1970, but split up before it was released. Consequently it received little airplay and flopped. The band all went on to college or further education. Today the album is exceedingly rare, even the more recent vinyl reissue on Rockadelic, which was limited to just 350 copies, has already become hard to come by. Even this CD release is shrinking in supply. Musically, it consists of keyboard-dominated progressive rock. On the first four tracks, which comprised side one of the vinyl release, it is more a case of them finding their voice. The final four tracks, which comprised side two of the vinyl release, have an overall more solid sound, with some exhilarating keyboard playing on Self-Made God, the highlight of the album. ZABU, also known under the name Lucien ZABUSKI, was the first MAGMA's first singer. A part of the Thélème label, so dear to Laurent THIBAUT, "My Coffin's Ready" (1972) proves to be very different from anything we could expect, given that it is actually a French blues album. Without any pretence, this masterpiece manages to captivate the listener all along. The singer's rough and energetic voice dominates the music with great ease. We'll also notice the participation of such prestigious musicians as Christian VANDER, Francis MOZE, Teddy LASRY, Yochk'o SEFFER and Marc PERRU. As you already know, most of them are obviously part of the Zeuhl universe. Here is then a definite historic document !

Aera founded in 1972 by 'Ihre Kinder' guitarist Muck Groh and 2066 &amp; Then keyboard player Steve Robinson were in their very beginnings, when they recorded their special extended version (26 minutes) 'Mechelwind Suite' of their later classic title 'Mechelwind' (on album 'Hand und Fuss', LHC 44, vinyl-edition). The Mechelwind Suite is divided into 5 parts and is rather different from the later album-version, not only because of Steve Robinson's excellent keyboard playing but also because of Muck Groh's fine guitar playing and Klaus Kreuzeder's pleasant sax tunes. CD 1 finishes with two SWF-recordings 'Hodibbel' and 'Mechelwind' from Oktober 1973 again with 2066 &amp; Then keyboarder Steve Robinson. The album, recorded in London, can be considered one of the most interesting examples of heavy progressive rock mixed with influences from local folk music. Svanfridur's compositions feature complex vocal harmonies and an original, inventive use of violin and Moog synthesizers, courtesy of guest musician and arranger Sigurdur Johnsson. .............................................................. <a name='more'></a> This one and only album by Icelandic band SVANFRIDUR is really a very rare gem in early progressive rock. I was very lucky to find a copy of a re-release by a Brazilian!! label. The liner notes are saying: "What's Hidden There?" is one of the most original and innovative of the albums released in 1971 and 1972. And I have absolutely to agree to that opinion. The opener "The Woman Of Our Day" is mainly guitar-based Art Rock, neither symphonic nor harsh, certainly the least progressive one on here, but nevertheless a good one. All the other compositions are definitely progressive. "The Mug" is a rather quiet song with guitar, bass, piano and some synthesizer sounds, very well-done and a rewarding listen. "Please Bend" is more in a hardrock vein but with an awesome electric violin added on, again they're using here some synthetic keyboard effects and finish the song with some weird vocal tunes, quite original and absolutely another highlight. The title song is an acoustic one with guitar, flute and violin, very pleasant one as well! "What Now You People Standing By", longest track of the album is a bit harsher and more up-tempo song containing a short but excellent percussion solo and great guitar / bass play. "Give Me Some Gas", again an up-tempo one exhibits a brilliant virtuosity of all musicians on their instruments, especially the bass play is very intense. "My Dummy" is basically a hard rock song with the add-up of some synths keyboards and here like as well in the last track once again Gunnar Hermannsson shines with his bass play. Ferdinando and Howell worked on several Psych-Folk albums together, although "A Game for All Who Know" (1973) was the only album released under the Ithaca name.
<a name='more'></a>The English trio had previously worked together on the Agincourt "Fly Away" (1970) album. The first release from Ferdinando &amp; Howell was "Alice Through the Looking Glass" back in 1969 followed shortly after by "Tomorrow Come Someday" in the same year. In 1974 they released another album together under the pseudonym of "Friends" for their final musical partnership. Peter Howell later worked for the BBC Radiophonic Workshop - famous for the Doctor Who TV theme - during the 1970's and he went on to record a couple of New Age albums, "Legend" (1984) and "Aquarius Rising" (1991) on the New World Music label. The Ithaca album consists of six songs with three bonus songs included in the 2004 CD reissue. If you have a copy of the original LP album, then you're a very lucky bunny indeed as there were only 99 pressings of the album at the time of its release. Time now to see whether Ithaca is a Greek island of musical treasures or whether it's as dodgy as a Greek bearing gifts. Our journey begins with "Journey" appropriately enough. Shhhhh! It's a VERY quiet beginning. Prepare to be taken on a magic carpet ride with some lovely harmonising from the three singers, because this is beautiful English Folk music at its melodic best, with a slice of prog thrown in for good measure to spice things up. If you're familiar with the trio's previous Agincourt album from 1970, then you'll know you're in for another real treat. Our journey continues with "Questions", and there's no question that this is sublime English Folk music. Just let the music gently carry you away to a land of dreams as you listen late at night in bed with the lights turned down low. Don't forget to let the cat or dog out before you go to bed though, because this gorgeous pastoral Folk music will put you in such a relaxed frame of mind that you won't feel like getting up again. Now we arrive at "Times", the longest song on the album at over 8 minutes long. It's really two shorter songs in one though, as there's a complete change of pace midway through, beginning with a gentle ballad and emerging like a butterfly into a bright and breezy poppy number. This lovely music is enough to make you long for the warm summer days again, especially if you're listening to this album on a damp and dark November day. And now we come to "Feelings", another 2-part song, combining a ballad and a lively up-tempo number. This beautiful song is sure to inspire feelings of joy that you were lucky enough to discover this long-lost album treasure, nearly 50 years after its release. Onwards now dear friends to "Dream", with the charming and delightful lead vocals of Lee Menelaus. What a voice! Her sweet and gentle voice is perfectly suited to this charming music. And now we come to the final song on the album and the title track "A Game for All Who Know" (subtitled "Journey - Part II). The song begins intriguingly with the sound of pages turning and a swirling synth and acoustic guitar. It's a song full of mystery and imagination. There's the sound of a rocket taking off and then a reprise of the opening number of the album with the hauntingly atmospheric sound of an organ carrying the song through to its conclusion. It's idyllic, it's bucolic, and it may even be soporific, but not in a bad way. At 7 minutes long, it's a song of almost epic proportions, or as epic as a Prog-Folk song can be. It might not have the pomp and bombast of a blast of Symphonic Prog, but it's none the worse for that. After all, you may have drifted off into a sleep of blissful dreams by this stage, so you don't want to be woken up with a start, although the song does end rather abruptly, so be prepared! Thanks to ProgArchives, YouTube &amp; the Internet, this long-lost album treasure is now gaining some of the recognition it truly deserves. It's a charming pastoral Folk album with timeless appeal that you can come back to again and again. It's not essential if you're into Prog-Rock, but it IS essential if you want to hear a sublime slice of 1970's English Prog-Folk at its absolute best. Synanthesia’s lone album is one of those forgotten psych folk minor recordings from the late sixties that managed to get released only because of the wide-open landscape of musical expression that existed at the time, but which was fast changing as that decade came to a close. One has to wonder if the band would have had more success if they had released this a couple years prior, or if RCA had gone to any expense at all in promoting the group.
<a name='more'></a> That said, the music here is quite good and will be instantly appealing to most prog folk fans. The trio of Dennis Homes, Jim Fraser and Les Cook with their completely acoustic instrumentation calls to mind similar acts like the Incredible String Band, Comus, and even Amazing Blondel to a certain extent, but also Simon &amp; Garfunkel before they hit it big, and even other obscure acts like Gentle Soul, Mortimer and Ant Trip Ceremony. The main difference here is that the band did not employ drums aside from Cook’s bongos, but they did prominently feature saxophone, oboe and especially a variety of flutes including the slightly nauseating nose flute. The album was recorded without overdubs and pretty quickly – two days in the studio with obviously a fairly rudimentary mixing job. No matter, that version is impossible to find today, but the remastered Sunbeam release is clear and well-produced. Probably not all that hard to pull off considering this is all acoustic, but still a decent job. These are all pretty short tracks, which was not all that unusual for folk acts of that day. Only “Morpheus” and the tribute to the mother of Greek muses “Mnemosyne” run more than five minutes, and these just barely that. The themes range from Greek and Roman mythology (“Mnemosyne”, “Morpheus”, “Minerva”, “Fates”, “Vesta”) to middle-age folklore (“The Tale of the Spider and the Fly”, “Peck Strangely and Worried Evening”) to British history (“Trafalgar Square”). The instrumentation is primarily anchored by acoustic guitar finger picking, the numerous flutes, and Homes’ vibraphone which he manages to make sound like a soft piano in some places and more typically like a xylophone in others. Some tracks like “Minerva” have a solid rhythm courtesy of the bongos, while on others the guitar sets the tone with little or no percussive accompaniment. The closing “Just as the Curtain Finally Falls” is the last the band would record although they probably didn’t know it at the time, and it does sound like a swan-song with the sad, lazy saxophone and introspective soft vocals. The Sunbeam reissue features a bonus track “Shifting Sands” which interestingly is the most dated-sounding on the record, with harmonizing vocals that are clearly Beatles-inspired. This is a very ear-pleasing album to enjoy on a quiet evening, and although it never made a splash when it released nearly forty years ago and won’t now, it is worth seeking out for fans of older light psych and especially progressive folk.
