20.
Warren looks to build off an encouraging outing as the Yanks travel to their spring home in pursuit of their fourth consecutive victory.

Fresh off a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals, the Yankees make their way to George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa to start a four-game set against the Rays. They’ll send Will Warren to the mound in game one. After a challenging 2024, it’s been a middling start to the year for the rookie right-hander, who carries a 1-0 record but a 5.14 ERA into play. He had an encouraging start against the Giants last time out, allowing two runs on two hits in the second inning but no other hits across five innings of work, punching out six to earn his first career victory. Warren has put up an elite whiff rate thus far but allowed too much hard contact, particularly on his sinker and changeup.

 21.
He’ll square up against Taj Bradley. The former top prospect, who turned 24 last month, got off to a strong start last year but struggled in the second half. He performed well last time out, holding the Braves to one run in six innings, though he did allow seven baserunners. The right-hander’s 11.1 K/9 is 13th in baseball among pitchers with at least two starts. This is mainly on the strength of his fastball, which has put away batters on more than a third of two-strike pitches while averaging 96.8 mph. It’s been a double-edged sword, though, with all four extra-base hits Bradley’s allowed this year coming on the pitch.

 22.
Manager Aaron Boone is tweaking his lineup a bit, batting Paul Goldschmidt and Ben Rice in the first two spots in the order against a right-hander for the first time in 2025. That moves Aaron Judge into third while Jazz Chisholm Jr. drops down to sixth for just the second time this year. Backup catcher J.C. Escarra draws his fourth start of the year behind the dish as Austin Wells gets the day off.

 61.

 62.
 63.
In one 2004 game, the Yankees literally long balled their way to a win over the Tigers.

Over the years, several Yankees team have gotten criticism from some sets of the fandom for being “too reliant on home runs” for fears that may come back to haunt them in the playoffs. While there is legitimate analysis that disputes that as a worry, it’s a thought that arises every so often. For this year’s team, Monday night’s win over Royals will probably cause some of those claims again.

 64.
On Monday, the Yankees beat Kansas City 4-1, with every run coming from four different solo home runs. Jazz Chisholm Jr., Trent Grisham, Ben Rice, and Austin Wells all went deep off of Royals starter Seth Lugo to help the Yankees to a win.

 65.
As you might expect, outside of games where a team is held to just one or two runs, getting all your offense via solo homers isn’t all that common. In fact, the Yankee franchise record for most runs in a game coming entirely from solo blasts is just one more than Monday’s game: five.

 66.
In that particular game, there’s some further additional information that makes that performance fairly remarkable.

 67.
On July 15, 2004, the Yankees were in Detroit to take on the Tigers. The Yankees were pretty good that year before the season was oddly cancelled halfway through the ALCS. Meanwhile, Detroit was still a couple years away from their 2006 breakout season, and finished the year well below .500. The pitching matchup that day of José Contreras versus Jeremy Bonderman is prime for remembering some guys.

 68.
The Tigers struck first on the day, with Carlos Peña singling home a run after a single, a wild pitch, and a passed ball had gotten Contreras in some trouble. The Yankees did strike back pretty quickly, though. Kenny Lofton got the Yankees on the board with a solo homer in the third, and Derek Jeter followed him with another two batters later.

 69.
Then in the top of the fourth, they hit yet another two solo shots. This time it was Alex Rodriguez leading off the frame with one and Hideki Matusi adding one with two outs in the inning.

 70.
On the mound, Contreras ended up putting in one of the best starts of his short and ill-fated Yankee career. He ended up going eight innings, allowing just that one run on four hits and one walk, striking out seven. If you go off the game score statistic, it was the fourth best start of his Yankee career. Contreras himself thought it was his best performance as a Yankee, and the best he had in general since a 2001 game for the Cuban national team. It would also be one of the final ones he made for the team before he was traded for Estaban Loaiza, who had quite the infamous Yankee career himself.

 71.
In the top of the ninth, A-Rod led off with yet another home run, before the Yankees tried to finish things off in the bottom of the inning. Contreras had come back out for the ninth, but was removed after allowing a lead-off single. Mariano Rivera came in for him and got through the rest of the inning without incident, sealing the win.

 72.
As mentioned as the entire purpose of this article, the Yankees scored all five of their runs on the game via five different solo homers. That is a Yankee franchise record, and is in a large tie for fourth in all of baseball. A 2022 Angels game where they scored seven runs on seven solo homers is the overall MLB record.

 73.
An even crazier fact about this 2004 Yankees’ game is that their five home runs were also the only five hits they had in the game too. By a pretty large gap, that is the most amount of hits the Yankees have had in a game where every hit has been a homer, with only one 1989 game from Cleveland topping that mark.

 74.
Considering that six runs is above the league average and would win plenty of games, I, for one, would love to see the 2025 Yankees try and top that mark.

 96.
 97.
The 21-year-old prospect kept the walks in check on Tuesday night and recorded six dominant innings against the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Tuesday night in High-A Hudson Valley was an exciting time for Yankees fans, particularly because 2023 first-round pick George Lombard Jr. continued his ascent up prospect rankings by hitting his first home run of the year and reaching base all four times he came to the plate. Starting pitcher Carlos Lagrange was arguably the star of the night, however, as he put in a dominant performance across six innings that showed exactly why the Yankees took a chance on him in the 2022 international free-agent class.

 98.
If you don’t know Lagrange’s name just yet, it’s because he hasn’t pitched all that much in professional baseball yet and his minor league stats thus far in his career have been terrible. He pitched just 21 innings last year between the Complex league and Low-A Tampa, and walked a shocking 20 percent of the hitters he faced. In fact, it was exactly 20 of 100 batters. The walks led to runs, and Lagrange recorded an inflated 6.91 ERA in his limited sample at Low-A in 2024.

 99.
This year’s stats don’t reflect it just yet due to five earned runs in his season debut, but after Tuesday’s performance Lagrange is one of the more exciting prospects in the organization this year. What makes him so enticing is a two-pitch mix that can give hitters nightmares. He features an electric fastball that has reached as high as 101 mph this year, and a wipeout slider that falls right off the plate. In terms of pure stuff, very few pitchers in the Yankees’ farm system possess what Lagrange does. The problem is that the slider falls off the plate far too often, and well-refined hitters will be able to lay off the pitch frequently if that doesn't change.

 100.
Tuesday night was the first time Lagrange showed strong signs of improvement. He went up against the Nationals’ High-A affiliate, the Wilmington Blue Rocks, and a lineup that featured some of their notable prospects including Caleb Lomavita, Elijah Green, and last year’s first-round draft pick, Seaver King. Lagrange dominated through six strong innings, striking out nine hitters, allowing two earned runs on two hits, and most notably only issuing one free pass to lead off the game.

 101.

 102.

 103.
Carlos Lagrange strikes out the side and breaks his own record with 9 Ks !! pic.twitter.com/ueF02kWaP9
— Hudson Valley Renegades (@HVRenegades) April 15, 2025
 104.

 105.
 106.
 107.

 108.
After walking the leadoff man (Jared McKenzie, who was thrown out trying to steal second), Lagrange struck out Seaver King and got T.J. White to ground out to third. He recorded 1-2-3 innings in the next three frames, striking out the side in the second. The only bit of trouble Lagrange ran into was in the top of the fifth, when he hit Caleb Lomavita with a pitch, then allowed a single to Brenner Cox and a two-run double to Marcus Brown. He evaded further damage by inducing a groundout to end the inning, then struck out the side in order to complete his night.

 109.
Lagrange had the slider working all night, and importantly was able to command it over the plate when he needed to. He recorded several strikeouts on the pitch, and was also able to locate the fastball up in the zone. Notably, college hitter and Top 10 draft pick Seaver King went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts against Lagrange. He threw 75 pitches in total, and his ability to work deep into this game is a promising sign for his potential to stick in a rotation. Overall, this start was exactly what the Yankees needed to see.

 110.
Lagrange has a long way to go, but his name will start to be mentioned much more frequently if he’s able to log a few more starts like this one. As a guy with two dominant pitches and notoriously wild command, there’s about as much bullpen risk here as you could possibly find in a pitcher, but there is still a world in which Lagrange makes the necessary adjustments and competes for a spot in the rotation at the higher levels. Even if that doesn’t happen, he possesses the raw stuff of a future high-leverage reliever. The Yankees will take it slow with him and try to refine his arsenal, but fans would be wise to keep an eye on his performance at High-A this season. A high-end outcome might just be in the cards for Carlos Lagrange.

 127.

 128.
 129.
The Yankees played one of the wildest games of the 2000 season 25 years ago today.

It’s been said a million times before, but if you show up to a baseball game, there’s a good chance you’ll see something you’ve never seen before. 25 years ago today, the crowd that attended a Monday night series opener between the Yankees and Rangers might’ve witnessed a dozen things they never had before. Rolling into Texas on a five-game winning streak, the Yankees found themselves in a topsy-turvy affair with the Rangers that included blown saves, blown calls, a no-hit bid, and more.

 130.
It was enough drama for a week, and by the time the dust settled, the Yankees had emerged with a sixth-straight win.

 131.
April 17: Yankees 5, Rangers 4 (box score)

 132.
Record: 9-3 (2.5 GA in AL East)

 133.
The pitching matchup seemed to favor the Yankees on this night, with David Cone squaring off with Darren Oliver, a 29-year-old with a career 4.55 ERA. Cone did his part, holding the Rangers to two runs and five hits over seven strong, an outing that surely helped quell concerns regarding Cone at the time after the veteran had gotten knocked around in his first two starts of the year.

 134.
But the Yankees could do little with Oliver. The left-hander spun one of the finest starts of his career, and through six innings, he’d allowed just one walk and no hits. In the third inning, former Yankee Chad Curtis produced an RBI double off Cone, and David Segui added an RBI single, so Oliver entered the seventh with a 2-0 lead and a no-hitter intact.

 135.
After retiring Derek Jeter on a groundout to lead off the inning, Oliver finally faltered when Paul O’Neill stroked a clean single to left to break up the no-no. And as so often goes when the no-hitter goes, so did the shutout. The very next hitter, Bernie Williams, tied the game with a high drive off the left-field foul pole:

 136.

 137.
Cone departed after seven with the score tied, and Jeff Nelson came on for the bottom of the eighth. Nelson struck out a pair before giving way to Mike Stanton, the lefty specialist called upon to face and retire Rafael Palmiero. Instead, Palmiero smashed his fifth homer of the young season, pushing the Rangers back in front 3-2.

 138.
On most nights, that would’ve been enough excitement for one game, but both sides were just getting started. Texas called upon John Wetteland, the former Yankee closer, to finish out the game. Wetteland yielded singles to Chuck Knoblauch and O’Neill, but struck out a pair to bring the Rangers one out away. Wetteland got ahead of Tino Martinez 1-2, but at the death, Martinez lined a single to right to tie the game at three:

 139.

 140.
Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extras and giving the Yankees a clean chance to seize control. They did so thanks to Jorge Posada, who smashed the first pitch he saw from reliever Tim Crabtree deep into the Texas night. His solo homer landed well beyond the center field fence, and the Yankees had a 4-3 lead for Rivera to protect.

 141.

 142.
Yet as was fitting on this crazy night, Rivera suffered a rare misstep. The Rangers’ rally in the home half of the tenth was as simple as 1-2-3; a Royce Clayton single, a sac bunt from Curtis to move Clayton over, and a game-tying RBI single from Ivan Rodriguez to score Clayton. It didn’t technically go down as a blown save for Rivera, as he’d entered a tie game in the ninth, but it still counted as a seldom-seen missed chance for the closer.

 143.
There would still be a few more twists on this night. Jeter led off the 11th with a single, and after a walk and a lineout, Martinez once again stepped to the plate in a position to do damage. He came through once more, his line-drive single to right giving the Yankees a 5-4 advantage.

 144.
That set the stage for the finale. Joe Torre tabbed Allen Watson for this save opportunity, with his legendary closer now spent. Watson quickly allowed two singles, and Gabe Kapler dropped down a bunt. Posada fired to second, but the runner was called safe, and suddenly, the Rangers had the bases loaded with no out.

 145.
Torre was running out of cards to play, and he went to Todd Erdos, hoping for the best. In a bizarre sequence, the batter Luis Alicea, chopped one in front of the plate. The ball clearly appeared to nip Alicea in the leg before bouncing into fair territory, which should have meant a dead ball. But umpire Jeff Kellog missed the ball glancing off Alicea, and Posada alertly grabbed the live ball, stepped on home plate for the force and tagged out Alicea for a double play:

 146.

 147.
The Yankees had caught a break. Though Alicea still should have been batting with a chance to tie or win the game, the Yankees now stood one out away from victory. Erdos fired a first-pitch fastball to Scott Sheldon, who bounced one to Clay Bellinger at third base. Bellinger fired high across the diamond, but Martinez came off first base to corral the throw and stepped on the bag in time to end the contest.

 148.
New York emerged with a dramatic win, having survived one of the strangest games of the year. They had to thank Martinez for his clutch hits, Posada for his high drive, and even the umpire Kellogg for his blunder, but after a long night of twists and heart palpitations, the Yankees left with a six-game winning streak.

 170.
Baltimore led from the jump and kept the pressure on Cleveland all night long.

The Yankees completed a rare sweep in which they scored the same amount of runs in every single game, beating the Royals by a score of 4-3 after besting them 4-2 on Tuesday and 4-1 on Monday. Thankfully, this wasn’t a four-game set that would send us into a 4-4 purgatory of extra innings, as they instead closed the series out on a go-ahead homer from Aaron Judge and a sliding catch to end the game from Cody Bellinger out in right field.

 171.
While the Yankees brought out the brooms in the Bronx, there was plenty of action across the board to catch up on around the American League. Let’s jump into the highlights:

 172.
Baltimore Orioles (7-10) 9, Cleveland Guardians (9-8) 1

 173.
Cleveland’s pitching staff got beaten badly by the Orioles, but there were two key innings that the majority of the damage came flooding in. Gavin Williams was trusted with the start, and after a breezy 1-2-3 first inning his luck turned rotten in the second.

 174.
Cedric Mullins led off with a walk, and Ryan Mountcastle singled to put runners on first and second with no one out. After a Heston Kjerstad line out moved Mullins to third, Ramón Urías walked to load the bases. That brought up Jackson Holliday, who has struggled once again at the major league level in the early going. He didn’t miss his mark in this at-bat, however, finding a hanging curveball over the outer half of the plate and mashing it over the wall in center field for a grand slam.

 175.

 176.
Cleveland got one back in the third on a Gabriel Arias solo shot, but that was the only blemish on Dean Kremer’s night. The right-hander went 5.1 innings, allowing four hits including the solo shot and just the one run. He wasn’t dominant, striking out just two batters in the process, but he was effective, and that was all Baltimore needed to bring the W in.

 177.
Williams hung around after his disaster second inning, and he managed to give the Guardians some solid length, pitching into the seventh inning. He did, however, end his night on a low-note, surrendering another homer, this time to Ramón Laureano. Joey Cantillo relieved him for the final out of the frame, and then they turned the ball over to Triston McKenzie, who has had two very good appearances and one very bad one this year. He evened out his record with a second poor one, serving up a solo shot to Ryan O’Hearn and a double to Mullins. A walk and wild pitch put runners in scoring position, and Kjerstad singled them both in to make it 8-1. A second wild pitch allowed Kjerstad to reach third base, and Urías lifted a sacrifice fly to bring the fourth run of the inning in and give us our 9-1 final.

 178.
St. Louis Cardinals (9-9) 4, Houston Astros (8-10) 1

 179.
The Astros have been fighting to keep their heads above water as they’ve struggled to climb back to .500, and they took another step back on Wednesday. Things started off promising, as they got a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to back-to-back singles from Jose Altuve and Jeremy Peña leading to an Isaac Paredes RBI groundout.

 180.
Ronel Blanco did a great job holding that lead through four innings, working around a walk in each of the first three, but he faltered in the fifth. Victor Scott II led off with a single, and Thomas Saggese joined him with a single of his own. Lars Nootbaar was up next, and he crushed one to straight-away center to take the lead.

 181.

 182.
Saggese added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI double, but the Cardinals already had all they needed. Steven Matz rebounded from his first inning snag to go five innings and earn the win, turning the ball over to a Cardinal ‘pen that delivered four innings of solid work. The Astros got a man on in all but the eighth inning, but couldn’t materialize any real threat to scoring.

 183.
Other Games

 184.
Boston Red Sox (10-10) 1, Tampa Bay Rays (8-10) 0: After manhandling the Sox for 16 runs on Monday, the rest of the series didn’t go Tampa Bay’s way. They got shutout in the finale after Sean Newcomb pitched around six baserunners in 4.2 innings and handed it over to a bullpen that allowed just a single hit against nine strikeouts the rest of the way. Boston got their lone run on a solo shot from David Hamilton in the third inning, and rode it all the way to victory.

 185.

 204.
 205.
The Yankees return to their spring training ballpark for a four-game battle with the Rays.

The Yankees have restored the good vibes with which they began the season following a sweep of the Royals at home. Now they'll hit the road, returning to some awfully familiar environs for a four-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees — who have faced three National League teams before seeing a division rival — will finally see an AL East competitor at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.

 206.
The Rays, entering the series with an 8-10 record, just welcomed the Red Sox to town. After throttling Boston 16-1 on Monday, they dropped the next two contests, including a 1-0 loss last night where you wonder if they wished they saved a few of those runs for later. The Rays are, as ever, a pitching-focused organization with the stingiest staff in the division to date. The Yankees will see a quartet of intriguing starters in this series.

 207.
Thursday: Will Warren vs. Taj Bradley (7:05 PM EDT)

 208.
Warren delivered a mighty fine five-inning performance last time out against the Giants, and the Yankee offense woke up just in time for that start to net him his first big league win. He'll look to keep that momentum going against a Rays lineup which, while not overflowing with talent, can hold its own in that Raysian fashion to which we're accustomed. Warren's sweeper has graded out excellently thus far through his first few starts and he's shown a knack for missing bats, though he'll still need to cut back on those free passes if he wants to graduate from his current five-and-dive role.

 209.
Taj Bradley is one of those pitchers who looks to have the complete package when you watch him, but has not yet found sustained success at the MLB level. After missing April last season, Bradley hit the ground running in May and appeared to be on the cusp of a breakout with a 2.90 ERA at the All-Star break. But he couldn't sustain it in the second half, thanks to an inability to limit hard contact and barrels. The 24-year-old is off to a good start this season though, with a 3.70 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 17 innings.

 210.
Friday: Carlos Rodón vs. Drew Rasmussen (7:05 PM EDT)

 211.
Rodón has continued to be a frustrating watch this season. It seems that for every five innings he throws where he's commanding his pitches, working ahead in the count, and getting strikeouts, there will be one disastrous inning where he loses command or allows a home run or two. Of course, the Yankee Stadium dimensions which have been rather unkind to him will follow him down to Florida this time around at Steinbrenner Field. The Yankees hope they can get a quality effort from Rodón which doesn't involve hanging a giant asterisk next to his pitching line.

 212.
Rasmussen only appeared in 24 games over the last two seasons due to a flexor strain and elbow surgery. This season, he's made three starts of exactly five frames, and allowed one total run while collecting a strikeout per inning. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the strikeout numbers fall off a bit — that's never really been his forte. However, Rasmussen is excellent at limiting walks and hard contact, meaning he could match up well against the Yankee offense.

 213.
Saturday: Carlos Carrasco vs. Shane Baz (4:10 PM EDT)

 214.
The Yankees will be very pleased if they can squeeze a few more starts out of Carrasco like the one he made on Monday: five quality innings with the only hit being a Bobby Witt Jr. home run. Failing that, the hope is Cookie can keep the Yankees in striking distance. The fact remains that when hitters make contact, they tend to hit it hard and far. His barrel rate against of 17.6 percent is so extreme that surely it can only go down from there ... right?

 215.
It's easy to forget that Shane Baz is still just 25 years old with how long he's been a top pitching prospect. As with many, many talented hurlers in the Rays organization, the main battle for Baz has mainly been staying on the field. His 79.1 innings in the majors last year were the most he'd thrown in a season as a professional since 2019, when he was pitching in A-ball. That said, Baz is looking like a problem early this season: a 1.42 ERA in his first three starts with 27 strikeouts as opposed to just four walks. He pairs a 97 mph fastball with a curveball from hell: hitters are 2-for-29 against the latter pitch. The Yankees will have their hands full with the whole Tampa pitching staff, but especially with Baz.

 216.
Sunday: Max Fried vs. Ryan Pepiot (1:40 PM EDT)

 217.
Fried just kept rolling along last time out against the Royals, pitching into the seventh inning for a second start in a row. Facing another American League team whose hitters have little head-to-head experience against him, one would expect him to have a solid chance to add to that streak on Sunday. It's early, but one thing to get excited about is how sharp Fried's curveball is looking: it's got an extra degree of horizontal and vertical break and currently grades out at 121 Stuff+, the highest grade for that pitch in his career. Seems Fried wasn't kidding when he mentioned coming to the Yankees to make his stuff even nastier.

 218.
After facing the pitcher who accompanied Tyler Glasnow in that infamous 2018 trade, the Yankees will face the headliner in the Rays’ return for Glasnow last offseason. Ryan Pepiot turned in a solid debut season in Tampa last season: a 3.60 ERA with 142 strikeouts in 130 innings with a few intermittent stints on the IL. Pepiot has struggled a bit after a pair of strong starts to open the year: a trio of solo homers against the Angels followed by six runs on nine hits against the Red Sox a few nights ago. In the 27-year-old's only start against the Yankees last year, he allowed one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in a winning decision on July 9th.

 293.
The goal of the game is to guess the correct Yankees player with the help of up to five clues. We’ll mix in BOTH ACTIVE AND RETIRED PLAYERS this week. It won’t be easy to figure it out in one or two guesses, but some of you might be able to nail it. The game appears in the third slot of the Pinstripe Alley layout each day this week and as noted above, will appear in this article exclusively.

 294.
After you correctly guess the player, you can click “Share Results” to share how you did down in the comments and on social media. We won’t go into other details about the game as we’d like your feedback on it. How it plays, what you think of it, the difficulty level, and anything else you can think of that will help us improve this game. You can provide feedback in the comments of this article, or you can fill out this Google Form.
