<title>Looking back at the coldest games in recent Yankees history</title>

<p>How do these frigid games in Detroit stack up?</p> <p id="qtt8vc">When you imagine a baseball game, what comes to mind?</p>
<p id="Ye7fwH">For me, I imagine a warm summer day at a ballgame with a hot dog in hand, wearing a T-shirt and shorts. I imagine many other fans would envision something similar.</p>
<p id="OtNEH4">What <em>very </em>few people would think of is snow, frigid temperatures, and wearing bundles of clothing with hot chocolate to keep your hands warm. That’s how I imagine December football games.</p>
<p id="uQuluj">This week, the <a href="https://www.pinstripealley.com/">Yankees</a> are in Detroit to face the Tigers in a three-game set. While all three weekday contests were scheduled to be played at night, the forecast caused all three to be moved to during the day, as temperatures in the Motor City were projected to fall below freezing, with wind chills in the teens.</p>
<p id="8UqAg7">The temperature at first pitch on Monday and Tuesday was 38 degrees. Although certainly frigid for a baseball game, it was outside the top ten coldest games in recent history, albeit not by much. After <a href="https://stathead.com/baseball/team-batting-game-finder.cgi?request=1&amp;order_by=date&amp;timeframe=seasons&amp;year_min=1901&amp;year_max=2025&amp;team_id=NYY&amp;max_temperature=40">diving into Stathead,</a> there are four games in the last 30 years that have had a first pitch temperature of lower than 36°.</p>
<p id="6walKE">Although all four do fall in the month of April, chilly games exist outside of it. The coldest May game in franchise history was 36° on May 6, 1989. In 1974, a game on October 1 came in at 38°. The playoffs often see temperatures dip into the low-40s. Despite that, no playoff game compares to these frigid occasions.</p>
<h3 id="OkLut0"><strong>April 8, 2003 vs. Minnesota Twins (35°)</strong></h3>
<p id="xP8sho">The coldest game in the history of old Yankee Stadium took place on an overcast Tuesday afternoon in the Bronx. The game was initially scheduled for the day prior, but it was a rare <a href="https://nypost.com/2003/04/07/snow-day-for-yanks/">snow-out.</a> As such, the game was played at 1:15 p.m. To add to the intrigue, the 5-1 Yanks were playing their home opener. The wind chill at first pitch, per the broadcast, sat at around 28°.</p>
<p id="ElzDqC">Andy Pettitte took the bump for the Yankees against Joe Mays of the Twins. Raúl Mondesí opened the scoring in the second for the home team with an RBI single. Pettitte ran into trouble in the fourth but got out of it with only one run allowed after getting both Matt LeCroy and Doug Mientkiewicz to ground out.</p>
<p id="QcVhVz">The offense would pick up their ace shortly after, with Robin Ventura socking a go-ahead home run to take a 3-1 lead after four. In the following inning, the bases were loaded for the rookie, Hideki Matsui. Godzilla would introduce himself to Yankees fans by smashing a ball into the right field bleachers, a grand slam for his first home run in MLB.</p>
<div id="arFVa0"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/matsui-s-grand-slam-c20069327" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="DdTsDG">Pettitte got chased from the game in the sixth inning, finishing an out shy of a quality start. Despite that, the Yankees coasted the rest of the way, with Jason Anderson getting the least three outs.</p>
<div id="alu9FE"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/p3Bul_BxPUY?rel=0" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;"></iframe></div></div>
<h3 id="H8IZ39"><strong>April 3, 1996 at Cleveland (35°)</strong></h3>
<p id="nGCrsb">The Yankees had won the previous day on Opening Day in Cleveland, a rescheduled game that featured the <a href="https://youtu.be/R1aT3dTOamk?si=dJs9M4Mi44voXgOX">first home run of Derek Jeter’s career.</a> It was only 38° that day, but it got even colder for the next game at Jacobs Field.</p>
<p id="qrWt5s">Like the previous game on this list, Andy Pettitte was on the mound for the Yankees. After he and Jack McDowell put up zeroes in the first inning, Mariano Duncan opened the scoring with an RBI single to put New York up 1-0.</p>
<p id="420hIp">Aside from a pair of run-scoring double plays, the two starters rolled on after that, cruising into the sixth until Cleveland’s Julio Franco booted a ball to extend the inning, eventually leading to a Bernie Williams RBI single to go up 3-1.</p>
<p id="5cYFvL">In the seventh, McDowell was chased from the game after a Jeter single, an error, and a walk loaded the bases. Joe Girardi would draw an RBI walk off of reliever Julián Tavárez would push the lead to three.</p>
<p id="3O9dhu">Pettitte would ease through 6.2 strong innings before being relieved by Jeff Nelson, who got a seven-out save in an eventual 5-1 win. The rookie Jeter would hit three singles and reach base in all four plate appearances.</p>
<h3 id="91TlxW"><strong>April 23, 2015 at Detroit Tigers (33°)</strong></h3>
<p id="njMRoT">The next game on our list barely clocks in above freezing. It’s the coldest game played by the Yankees after April 10 by three whole degrees.</p>
<p id="a6Slin">In a similar April series to this one, the Yanks visited a Tigers team that started the season 11-2 before dropping the last two games of this series. In a Thursday matinee to close out the four-game set, the winds were 13 mph as Masahiro Tanaka and Aníbal Sánchez squared off.</p>
<p id="JvlD0f">Anthony Gose led off the bottom of the first with a double, later scoring on a Victor Martinez sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead for Detroit. They held that lead for the next five innings, as Sánchez mowed down a <a href="https://youtu.be/h-oOTBfvHz0?si=Ocbp99g-1PWc5x6S&amp;t=438">very uninspiring lineup.</a></p>
<p id="vTcAf4">In the sixth, Jacoby Ellsbury manufactured the tying run by himself. A walk, stolen base, and a groundout put him on third before Sánchez balked him home.</p>
<p id="OOLuZC">Tanaka, in possibly the coldest game he’s pitched in his entire life, was very strong over 6.1 innings before he was chased by a J.D. Martinez double and Yoenis Céspedes walk. To get out of the jam, the Yankees deployed both Justin Wilson and Dellin Betances, this being the days before the three-batter-minimum rule.</p>
<p id="dBvVby">In the eighth, Ellsbury led off with a double and came around to score on a Brian McCann RBI groundout, putting the Yankees on top.</p>
<p id="5Q7lSF">2015 wasn’t quite “No Runs DMC”, but both Betances and Andrew Miller tossed 1-2-3 frames to close out a 2-1 win.</p>
<div id="2bxfFn"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aEhHZRBZ_sY?rel=0" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;"></iframe></div></div>
<h3 id="vCaWGB"><strong>April 9, 2016 at Detroit Tigers (31°)</strong></h3>
<p id="rw4G2L">The coldest game in recent Yankees history (and potentially all of Yankees history) was also played in Detroit and came in just below freezing.</p>
<p id="3kG7Gq">This game was put somewhat in doubt due to heavy snow early in the Motor City that day, but it cleared up shortly before first pitch. Occasional flurries popped up throughout the game as players donned beanies and ski masks in both dugouts.</p>
<p id="3ISMKK">CC Sabathia took the mound in the Saturday afternoon contest for the visiting Yankees and got support before throwing a single pitch, with Alex Rodriguez belting his 688th career home run for the early lead.</p>
<div id="JR2kzH"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/a-rod-s-solo-homer-c580161383" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="UTRl5d">A second inning RBI single by Didi Gregorius stretched the lead to two. As Sabathia dealt, the Yankees offense chased Mike Pelfrey in the fourth with a three-run double by Ellsbury (who seems to love these cold games).</p>
<p id="OOnpls">Poor command from the future Hall of Famer let the Tigers back into the game, but Carlos Beltran got two runs back with a blast off of Buck Farmer to take an 8-2 lead.</p>
<div id="aoaTvn"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/carlos-beltran-homers-2-on-a-fly-ball-to-right-field-brian-mccann-scores" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="3jinKT">Sabathia pitched into the seventh before exiting after a leadoff single. With an 8-4 lead late in the game, two members of the newly formed <a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=66960X1516590&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mlb.com%2Fnews%2Fyankees-no-runs-dmc-honored-by-ny-writers-c214080342&amp;referrer=sbnation.com&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinstripealley.com%2F2025%2F4%2F9%2F24403869%2Fyankees-snow-games-cold-history-matsui-ellsbury-sabathia-pettitte" rel="sponsored nofollow noopener" target="_blank">“No Runs DMC”</a> shut down the Tigers offense and closed down the win.</p>

<title>2000 Diary, April 9: Errors doom Yankees in loss to Mariners</title>

<p>After bad news off the field, the Yankees had a bad day on it 25 years ago today.</p> <p id="IHmqoG">Errors are an unavoidable part of baseball. Even the best teams are going to make plenty of them over the course of a season. Knowing that, they can be quite frustrating in the moment. Makeable plays are turned into ones that extend innings and give the opposing team extra chances, usually then in a further advantageous situation.</p>
<p id="cmaqAq">The story of the <a href="https://www.pinstripealley.com/">Yankees</a>’ game 25 years ago on this day was two errors, and just how costly they proved in a game against the Mariners.</p>
<p id="ormNUg"><strong>April 9: Yankees 3, Mariners 9 (</strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SEA/SEA200004090.shtml"><strong>Box score</strong></a><strong>)</strong></p>
<p id="4CCbtc"><strong>Record: 3-3 (.500, 2.0 GB)</strong></p>
<p id="MiVdpc">The Yankees were playing that day with a bit of a heavy heart after pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2000/04/10/sports/baseball-for-clemens-and-yanks-a-sad-day-turns-dismal.html">revealed that he was dealing with a form of blood cancer</a>. That day’s starting pitcher, Roger Clemens, had become especially close with his pitching coach since coming to New York. As would be understandable, the Yankees probably had a lot on their minds this day against the Mariners, and their play somewhat showed it.</p>
<p id="MNVysV">After Clemens and Jamie Moyer exchanged a couple zeroes early, the Mariners got on the board in the bottom of the third, via some help. After Clemens issued a one-out walk to Carlos Guillén, he induced a groundball to Derek Jeter that could’ve been an inning-ending double play. However, Jeter decided to take it himself and was not only beaten to the second base bag by Guillén, but his throw to first was then off the mark. All runners were safe and a Mike Cameron single in the following at-bat got Seattle on the board.</p>
<p id="ht9gN6">The Yankees struck right back in the top of the fourth inning, tying the game on two straight doubles, including a game-tying one from Jeter to make up for the error. After Jeter then moved to third on a groundout, he scored on a Bernie Williams fly ball that was enough for Jeter to tag up and score.</p>
<p id="55eNqc">That lead didn’t hold for very long, as another error came back to haunt the Yankees even worse than the first one did.</p>
<p id="FtkcgR">Dan Wilson led off the bottom of the fifth for Seattle with a single, which brought Guillén to the plate. He laid down a bunt attempt that was pretty well placed and forced catcher Jorge Posada to try and underhand the ball to first to get the out. The toss was ruled to have pulled a covering Chuck Knoblauch off the bag allowing Guillén to be safe at first. The Yankees disagreed, arguing that the ball had been safely in Knoblauch’s glove before he came off the bag, but in those pre-replay days, there wasn’t much to be done and the call stood. Things fell apart pretty quickly after that.</p>
<p id="PpHGMJ">Following a walk to Mark McLemore, Cameron picked up another RBI single in the next at-bat. Clemens then got two outs, but with the bases having been loaded an Alex Rodriguez ground out and a John Olerud fly out were both good enough to score runs. Edgar Martínez picked up a single of his own before Jay Buhner put a bow on the inning for the Mariners with a home run. In total, Seattle scored six runs in the inning. Thanks to the error and the fact that several of the runs were with two outs and after the Yankees could’ve been out of the inning otherwise, five of the runs went down as unearned.</p>
<p id="XJ8VNL">One bright spot for the Yankees came right after that in the next inning. Playing third base that day, Alfonso Soriano led off the top of the sixth for the Yankees. While he was still a year away from truly cracking into the Yankees’ lineup, Soriano had one of his bright moments of 2000, following his homer heroics from the previous day by taking Moyer deep for his third career home run.</p>
<div id="JI5Lhh"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/soriano-homers-off-moyer-c2234751683" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="oqhPmA">That ended up being the last good thing for the Yankees that day.</p>
<p id="Xh3AJK">Clemens departed after the sixth inning, having allowed seven runs on seven hits. However as mentioned, most of them ended up being credited as unearned, with only one actually going on his ERA ledger. He was hardly good that day, but still ended the outing with a 0.75 ERA on the season.</p>
<p id="tMmZRi">Todd Erdos replaced Clemens and gave up two more runs in the seventh. Meanwhile after Soriano’s home run, the Yankees offense quite literally did nothing with Moyer and José Paniagua combining to retire the last 12 Bombers’ hitters.</p>
<p id="kFCvlY">Stottlemyre would continue coaching that season and for the next several years after battling his form of cancer. But that day, it really does seem like the Yankees had their minds preoccupied with their pitching coach.</p>
<div id="fmtHR8"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 75%;"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/T8-3q0gr3ks?rel=0&amp;start=243&amp;end=272" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;"></iframe></div></div>

<p>The late night crowd saw some wild ones, as Houston whittled down Seattle and Arizona survived an Orioles comeback.</p> <p id="mEgMrv">The <a href="https://www.pinstripealley.com/">Yankees</a> were on the wrong end of a lopsided loss on Tuesday, as Tarik Skubal neutralized the Bomber bats for six innings before turning it over to the Tigers bullpen to complete the shutout. On the other side, Carlos Carrasco looked every bit the 38-year-old in the twilight of his career as opposed to the spring chicken that won the starting gig, as he gave up three home runs in 4.1 innings. Not ideal!</p>
<p id="pyDtPq">New York has now lost three in a row, leaving room for the rest of the pack to gain a game on them again. Let’s see how the other notables did:</p>
<h3 id="P3fDBj"><strong>Arizona Diamondbacks (6-6) 4, Baltimore Orioles (5-7) 3</strong></h3>
<p id="ctJQi4">Merrill Kelly and Charlie Morton both got into immediate trouble for the D-Backs and Orioles. Kelly in his first inning of work loaded the bases on one out thanks to a walk, single, and hit-by-pitch, and then Cedric Mullins knocked in two of them with a single. The O’s could’ve gotten more, but Tyler O’Neill grounded into a double play to end the inning — a lost opportunity they’d come to regret. </p>
<p id="3ioWlZ">Meanwhile, Morton loaded the bases in the first as well, but he did so with a hit by pitch and two walks right out of the gate. Josh Naylor grounded into a double play to give Morton enough breathing room to escape the jam with minimal harm, only allowing one across. Over time though, Morton remained the pitcher that consistently got into trouble. Corbin Carroll greeted him in the third with a leadoff homer to tie the game, and in the fifth inning back-to-back doubles from Pavin Smith and Naylor knocked in two more runs.</p>
<div id="oTwXjt"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/josh-naylor-doubles-5-on-a-sharp-line-drive-to-right-fielder-tyler-o-neil" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="txEw8m">Kelly rebounded from his disastrous first inning to record 11 straight outs, interrupted only by a fielding error before sitting down four more in a row. He ran out of gas at the top of the seventh, however, serving up a leadoff double to Mullins and a walk to O’Neill before getting pulled. Shelby Miller nearly got out of the inning cleanly, but a bizarre play ended the frame: Jackson Holliday lined out to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in left field on a sliding play, and Gurriel came up firing but severely overthrew third base allowing Mullins to tag up and score. O’Neill, however, never tagged up at second thinking the ball wasn’t caught because the umpire never signaled if it was a catch or not, and ran home only to get doubled up. The play was challenged but upheld, as Baltimore clawed back a run but ended their rally.</p>
<div id="fYr1AC"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/mullins-scores-on-throwing-error" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="Pd7z1i">The O’s had one last chance to tie the game, in the eighth inning. Adley Rutschman hit a one-out single and the speedster Jorge Mateo pinch-ran for him, and Mateo got himself all the way to third with two stolen bases. Ryan Mountcastle hit a ball right back to the pitcher, however, and Mateo went on contact making him a lame duck stuck between third and home. Mountcastle made it to second base on the rundown to keep a runner in scoring postion, but Jordan Westburg struck out to end the frame. In the ninth, O’Neill got hit to get on once more, but Heston Kjerstad grounded into the game-ending double play.</p>
<h3 id="yvfAhB"><strong>Cleveland Guardians (4-6) 1, Chicago White Sox (2-8) 0</strong></h3>
<p id="Ona7hK">It’s a brutal fate to pitch as well as you can in a pitchers’ duel and have to leave it up to the bullpen, but that’s exactly what happened to both Ben Lively and Shane Smith. The two starters went six and five innings respectively, shutting out both offenses and allowing two hits apiece, Lively did allow three free passes, two of which came in the first inning, but he settled down enough to avoid any damage.</p>
<p id="32SYw8">Chicago’s best chance to strike came in the fourth inning, when Luis Robert Jr. led off with a single and stole second base. Nick Maton followed up with a hard-hit single to right, moving Robert up to third but preventing him from trying for home base. That proved costly, as Andrew Vaughn popped up and Matt Thaiss grounded into a double play to immediately end the threat. Cleveland had a couple of good chances against Smith, first getting a leadoff walk and a hit-by-pitch in the fifth to put runners on with no outs, but two line outs and a groundout put that to rest. Then in the sixth the Guardians collected a pair of two-out singles to start a rally, only for Kyle Manzardo to strike out and end it.</p>
<p id="FqlRY6">The scoreless tie held up until the ninth inning, when Chicago finally blinked. Mike Clevinger came on for the final out of the eighth, and stayed out for the ninth only to give up a leadoff single and then walk three straight batters to force in the walk-off run.</p>
<div id="FALRbO"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/nolan-jones-walks-carlos-santana-scores-kyle-manzardo-to-3rd-jhonkensy-no" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<h3 id="St7kNB"><strong>Houston Astros (5-6) 2, Seattle Mariners (4-8) 1 (12 innings)</strong></h3>
<p id="D23kRU">The West Coast stayed up extra late with some free baseball, courtesy of the <a href="https://www.crawfishboxes.com">Astros</a> and Mariners. Framber Valdez and Luis Castillo were both fantastic, keeping both sides off the scoreboard through five innings (six for Valdez), but neither one would get a decision as they canceled each other out. Instead, it became a battle of the bullpens and both sides budged in the seventh inning.</p>
<p id="dVpngq">Houston got on the board first, and they got some help from their rivals in doing so. Collin Snider entered the game and got Brendan Rodgers to strike out to lead off, before getting a ground ball to third for what would’ve been the second out. Instead, Dylan Moore threw away the ball and allowed him to reach, and Cam Smith immediately punished the mistake by lacing a triple down the line in left. It was Smith’s first big league RBI, and it came at the perfect time to put his team up.</p>
<div id="33O3mX"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/collin-snider-in-play-run-s-to-cam-smith" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="JTMrt6">Seattle finally had an answer after Valdez left the game though. Taylor Scott replaced him and gave up a single to Mitch Garver to start, and Garver stole second base to put himself in scoring position. Luke Raley obliged him, hitting a hard single off the glove of Christian Walker at first base and dribbling towards the outfield. Garver managed to chug all the way home and tie the game at one. Neither side had any foot traffic in the next two innings, forcing extras.</p>
<p id="8unA5J">The Astros threatened in the top of the 10th, as Jose Altuve’s two-out infield single gave them runners on the corners and later runners in scoring position after an Altuve steal, but Isaac Paredes flew out to give the baton over to Seattle. They passed, going down in order, and again Houston pushed to go ahead — Jordan Alvarez was intentionally walked, and then the runners advanced on a dribbler to the mound where the only play was to throw to first. Rodgers grounded into an inning-ending double play though, again giving the Mariners a chance to walk it off. They refused once more, getting a walk before a double play of their own sent it to the 12th inning.</p>
<p id="q1q0kE">The Astros wouldn’t be denied a third time. Playing to simply get one across at this point, Chas McCormick laid down a sacrifice bunt and Victor Caratini singled home the ghost runner on a grounder right through the drawn-in infield. Seattle’s last chance in the 12th was another dud, as they went down in order to end the game.</p>

<h3 id="0oCLII"><strong>Other Games</strong></h3>
<p id="ThRR8n"><a href="https://www.bluebirdbanter.com/"><strong>Toronto Blue Jays</strong></a><strong> (7-5) 6, </strong><a href="https://www.overthemonster.com/"><strong>Boston Red Sox</strong></a><strong> (6-6) 1:</strong> Garrett Crochet had the Blue Jays crossed up for five innings, but things fell apart quickly in the sixth. George Springer broke the shutout with a one-out solo shot, and then with two outs Alex Bregman threw away the potential third out extending the frame. Crochet walked a batter to put two on and then got a ground ball to second baseman Kristian Campbell. The ball took Campbell into the outfield grass but he managed to nab it, just to throw the ball away for the second error of the inning. A run scored, and after another walk Bo Bichette singled to bring home two more and suddenly put the Jays up 4-0. The Sox got one back in the seventh, but were otherwise stymied by Easton Lucas and a bevy of Jays relievers.</p>

<title>Yankees At-Bat of the Week: Jasson Domínguez (4/4)</title>

<p>El Marciano won an eight-pitch battle, setting Oswaldo Cabrera up to open the scoring against the Pirates last Friday.</p> <p id="bXzYlp">After five long months, our <a href="https://www.pinstripealley.com/">Yankees</a> at-bat of the week series is back! I’m excited to continue to share this feature that our esteemed former colleague and FanGraphs writer Esteban Rivera started alongside sequence of the week, which will be making its return on Friday. For the first entry of 2025, Jasson Domínguez gets the nod.</p>
<p id="LDoa8T">The biggest question facing Domínguez over the offseason didn’t concern his bat but rather how his glove would hold up at a new position in left field. He has mostly acquitted himself well on the long grass, grading out at roughly league-average though his first ten games. The bat has been a bit slow to really get going, Domínguez batting .222 with a 105 wRC+. </p>
<p id="oVH1Y6">It was always unlikely that he would immediately return to the pace of his explosive debut in 2023 when he hit four home runs in eight games, and the Yankees rightly continue to show unwavering faith in his process. There’s good — 10.5-percent walk rate, 77th percentile bat speed — mixed in with the bad — tenth percentile or worse in average exit velocity and squared-up rate, and it paints the picture of a young hitter still getting his feet under him at the major league level. </p>
<p id="Jvuz9U">We join Domínguez with one out in the second of the series opener against the Pirates last Friday. Trent Grisham is on first following a one-out walk, and it’s important that the Bombers cash in early run scoring opportunities after wasting two on and no out in the first. </p>
<p id="RhrIEa">Mitch Keller goes right at Domínguez from first pitch, pouring in a 95 mph four-seamer over the heart of the plate. </p>
<div id="xTaw07"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/mitch-keller-foul-to-jasson-dominguez" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="hvIyNY">Jasson is late and shoots it foul to left, the ball practically making contact at the label. </p>
<p id="TxyzMN">After seeing that late swing from Domínguez, Keller goes right back to the fastball, the 94 mph heater targeted toward pretty much the same location — elevated and a bit under the hitter’s hands.</p>
<div id="OrOoN8"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/mitch-keller-foul-to-jasson-dominguez-ye85ns" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="ssk81g">Same pitch, same result. On top of being late again, Jasson is imprecise with his barrel, unable to open his front half or pull his hands in to get to the inside pitch, fouling it off the label once more. </p>
<p id="LtPMAy">With two late swings against the fastball in a row, the easy choice is to triple up on the pitch. If Keller is able to elevate the pitch more, there’s a good chance he’ll get the swinging strikeout.</p>
<div id="GGR7XU"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/mitch-keller-foul-to-jasson-dominguez-wu6vep" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="KZ9gZ3">Instead, Keller leaves this one out over the plate more than the first two. What’s more, Jasson is slowly syncing his timing to the velocity, making contact a little further down the bat toward the barrel, but still underneath the pitch for his third foul in a row. </p>
<p id="FyCOa5">Perhaps Keller and the catcher pick up on Domínguez’s improving timing, because they switch to the slider for the fourth pitch of the encounter. </p>
<div id="lUlLVW"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/mitch-keller-ball-in-dirt-to-jasson-dominguez" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="4MCJMq">This was a mature take on a pitch that would have struck out many batters. Even though the slider ends up in the dirt back-foot, it comes out of a similar tunnel as the three fastballs to open the AB, and I almost couldn’t believe that Jasson barely flinched at the pitch.</p>
<p id="hmjzM7">Seeing Domínguez’s lack of interest at offering at the chase slider, Keller changes tack and looks to attack away with off-speed, Joey Bart setting a target for a changeup off the plate outside. </p>
<div id="2Gdqqm"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/mitch-keller-ball-to-jasson-dominguez" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="zLOUyH">This pitch is a ball all the way out of Keller’s hand, resulting in an easy take for Domínguez. It starts higher and farther outside than any of the fastballs Keller threw, and the movement takes it even further away from the hitter. </p>
<p id="JrW1Sb">To this point in the AB, Keller has exhibited his best execution with the fastball, so he returns to the heater hoping two straight slower pitches will have interrupted Domínguez’s timing.</p>
<div id="8diuDo"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/mitch-keller-foul-to-jasson-dominguez-dkemok" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="0Xvd7V">It’s pretty much the exact same result as the previous three fastballs Keller threw. Jasson fights the pitch off foul — still a tad late — and lives to fight another pitch. </p>
<p id="lk9CAf">A tried and true method to fool a hitter is to speed them up and then slow them down, and that’s exactly the one Keller employs on pitch seven, changing speeds down to the changeup.</p>
<div id="jCnnJC"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/mitch-keller-ball-to-jasson-dominguez-3ttwza" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="7Kqq6g">This is by far the best take of the AB from Jasson. The changeup tunnels for much of its journey toward home with the four-seamer that immediately preceded it, only fading down and away once it gets close to the plate. However, Jasson isn’t remotely fooled, watching the pitch all the way into the glove to fight back from 0-2 to a full count. </p>
<p id="UxSmjQ">After seeing Domínguez spit on all three off-speed pitches he threw, Keller has no choice but to attack the zone with a heater to avoid putting a second runner on via a walk. He gets the pitch to the same location as the first two fastballs that Domínguez was late on, but this time Jasson is ready. </p>
<div id="t4tK8W"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/m/jasson-dominguez-doubles-2-on-a-line-drive-to-right-fielder-andrew-mccutc" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>
<p id="wUTts9">What a fabulous piece of hitting! Jasson makes an adjustment from the first three fouls vs. fastballs. He starts his swing a little earlier and shortens up, allowing him to catch the pitch out in front and pull it with authority down the right field line for a double. </p>
<p id="wcuCwc">Here’s the full AB:</p>
<div id="V9evcd"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/mlbfilmroom/00u62m306p3hmm1OZ357/jasson-dominguez-double-04-04-2025" style="top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media;"></iframe></div></div>

<figcaption>Courtesy of Baseball Savant</figcaption>
</figure>
<p id="t4s0gB">This proved to be an early turning point in the game, the Yankees immediately capitalizing on Domínguez winning the eight-pitch battle as Oswaldo Cabrera plated both runners with a single to open the scoring. The offense would not look back from there, sailing to a <a href="https://www.pinstripealley.com/2025/4/4/24401368/yankees-mlb-game-score-recap-pirates-aaron-judge-homer-oswaldo-cabrera-jasson-dominguez-max-fried">9-4</a> victory. </p>
<p id="gg2Y6B">I feel this AB showcased several of the abilities that will allow Domínguez to have a successful big league career. The pitch recognition is impressive, Domínguez able to lay off three separate off-speed pitches immediately thrown following a fastball with the same initial trajectory. More impressive is the adjustment he made mid-AB. He realized his bat path was traveling under the four-seamer, so he made sure to stay on top of the 3-2 heater and ripped it for a double. This mature approach is why I’m still high on El Marciano. </p>

<p>Searching for a Wednesday win.</p> <p id="1csRi6">Icy weather in Detroit has left the <a href="https://www.pinstripealley.com/">Yankees</a>’ bats cold, with New York now on a three-game skid after getting dominated by Tarik Skubal yesterday. The good news is, they’ve got Max Fried on the mound today, backed by a bullpen whose top arms are rested. Let’s hope they can secure this game, and get out of this road trip 3-3 before returning to New York for a six-game homestand. </p>
<p id="YS8VbG">It’s another day game today, with the Yankees and Tigers clashing at 1 p.m. to avoid the worst of the Michigan cold. On the site, get caught up on the rest of Tuesday’s action with Madison’s recap, and continue along with the story of the 2000 Yankees with Matt’s lookback 25 years ago. Also, Michael remembers some of the coldest games from the Yankees’ history, and Peter delivers his at-bat of the week, focusing on Jasson Domínguez.</p>

<title>NYY news: RIP Octavio Dotel</title>

<p>Dotel passes away in tragic accident; Bellinger has food poisoning; LeMahieu working his way back; Regular man vs. MLB pitcher</p> <p id="nGuEEW"><a href="https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/04/octavio-dotel-dies-in-roof-collapse-tragedy.html">MLB Trade Rumors | Darragh McDonald</a>: In case you missed the news yesterday, former MLB and <a href="https://www.pinstripealley.com/">Yankees</a> pitcher Octavio Dotel passed away tragically yesterday. Dotel was one of many victims after a club collapsed in the Dominican Republic, though he was initially rescued alive, it seems he passed while being transferred to the hospital. Kevin has a longer, detailed write up on Dotel’s life <a href="https://www.pinstripealley.com/2025/4/8/24404141/yankees-pitcher-dies-dominican-republic-collapse-nightclub-octavio-dotel-2006-no-hitter-astros">here</a>, please do give it a read. </p>
<p id="e1wLU7"><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=66960X1516590&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mlb.com%2Fyankees%2Fnews%2Fcody-bellinger-scratched-yankees-tigers-with-food-poisoning&amp;referrer=sbnation.com&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinstripealley.com%2F2025%2F4%2F9%2F24404196%2Fmlb-yankees-news-octavio-dotel-tragic-accident-death-dr-bellinger-food-poisoning-lemahieu-ottavino" rel="sponsored nofollow noopener" target="_blank">MLB.com | Steve Kornacki</a>: Cody Bellinger missed another game yesterday, on the heels of missing a couple games with a back issue, though the reason this time was quite different. Bellinger missed yesterday’s game due to a suspected bout of food poisoning. Some wings he ate were the apparent culprit, and fortunately it seems like the rest of the team was unaffected, but based on their offensive performance yesterday, maybe they also had some of those wings. Also, DJ LeMahieu is supposedly working his way back from injury, but we’ll see where that goes. </p>
<p id="zyshlv"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfSDLaLu21U">YouTube | Joon Lee</a>: Not an article, but a fun video to end your roundup today. Joon Lee details his experience facing an actual MLB pitcher in the batter’s box. He faced former Yankee and twice-DFA’d-this-past-week Adam Ottavino just to see what it feels like. I won’t give away too much, but go give this video a watch. It’s a fun little break in your day. </p>
