57.
In his 2013 Autumn Statement, the Chancellor announced that someone in their 40s won’t get their state pension until they are aged 68; the linkage to life expectancy is likely to mean someone starting work now will have to wait to age 72, and a child born today is unlikely to receive their state pension until they reach 75.

 164.
The shale gas industry will welcome the proposed changes as they will reduce the 62% rate suffered by oil and gas companies operating in the North Sea to something closer to 30%. The existing oil and gas regime is not appropriate for shale gas investment as the economic returns are expected to be very different. As such, the proposals reflect this and should stop the tax system, of itself, preventing investment in the shale gas sector.

 165.
The growth in the US economy which has been supported by low energy prices following their shale gas revolution, is clearly envied by the Chancellor given the announcements on shale gas extraction today. It's unclear whether such a revolution can occur in the UK. Shale gas is only a low carbon transition fuel if we are making the low carbon transition more broadly across the energy and transport sectors. Some environmentalists may question whether these trade-offs are worth it, or whether other low carbon technologies are worth more investment.

 181.
It is great news that the Government continues to make it attractive for employers to provide shares to employees, especially given the evidence that these companies often perform better. The increases to the annual tax free limits for the Share Incentive Plan (SIP) and Save as You Earn (SAYE), which are favoured by a significant number of UK companies, will make a big difference to a significant number of UK companies and workers. The changes will be particularly welcomed following the cuts to pension relief over recent years.

 182.
Employers will now be able to award employees in a share incentive plan (SIP) for 2014/2015 free shares worth £3,600 (up from £3,000).

 183.
The amount employees can purchase with tax benefits is to increase to £1,800 from £1,500. The amount employees in SAYE plans will be able to save from 2014/15 every month will also double to £500 from £250.

 184.
Click here to arrange a meeting
