The reigning NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion has won two of the first three events on that series in 2024. In his last four events at Stafford Silk has a jaw dropping average finish of 1.75. In addition to his win in the 2023 Spring Sizzler, Silk also won the 2022 Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series NAPA Fall Final at Stafford. scoring victories in big paying events. </p> <p>When it comes to Stafford Speedway though, the real money man over the last two years has been Ron Silk. </p> <p>On Sunday at Stafford Speedway Silk goes looking to start a special streak at Stafford. </p> <p>The Norwalk Modified veteran will be looking for his second consecutive victory in the NAPA Spring Sizzler 100 at Stafford Speedway. </p> <p>For Silk, major events at Stafford at the beginning of or ending of the season have been showcases recently. </p> <p>In 2022 Silk finished third in the NAPA Spring Sizzler and won the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series NAPA Fall Final at Stafford. In 2023 Silk won the Sizzler and finished second in the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series Fall Final. </p> <p>Between the last two Spring Sizzler’s and Fall Final’s at Stafford, Silk and his Haydt-Yannone Racing team have collected just under $64,000 in prize money, with about $50,000 of that coming from his two victories during that span. </p> <p>Between the winner’s purse, the payout for the qualifying event and lap money, Silk’s team took home over $35,000 for the 2023 Spring Sizzler win. </p> <p>Silk goes looking to cash in once again Sunday, leading an entry list of 35 drivers into the “Greatest Race In The History of Spring.” </p> <p>Silk is one of four former Spring Sizzler winners on the entry list. The three-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion has never won the Spring Sizzler, posting a best finish of second in 2014. He hasn’t competed in the event since 2021. </p> <p>In Bonsignore’s last Stafford start, he finally posted his first win at the Connecticut half-mile – a victory that helped him capture his third NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour title.</p> <p>“The Spring Sizzler is a major event and I’m thrilled that Tommy Baldwin and his team asked me to drive the 7NY for it,” Bonsignore said. “It’s going to be a competitive race with a lot of strategy involved in the whole weekend. We’re looking forward to getting to Stafford and going after the trophy.”</p> <p>The schedule for Stafford’s Spring Sizzler weekend includes two days of racing. On Saturday, the team will compete in a qualifying heat race and a 40-lap Duel qualifying race worth $3,500 to win. On Sunday, the team will race for a $20,000 prize in the 100-lap NAPA Spring Sizzler feature. Watts / Eastport Feeds SK Modified® car. Christopher ran 2 races with the Paige team last season at Waterford and the NAPA Fall Final at Stafford. Christopher is looking forward to the Sizzler® and feels like he’ll have what he needs to be a contender for the win in the #00 car.</p> <p>“I’m excited about the race,” said Christopher. “Jimmy and Steve Lemay, the crew chief, want to do everything in their power to have good finishes and get some wins. We’ve been building in the two races that we ran together at Waterford and Stafford last season making the car faster and I have no doubt that they’ll put the time, effort, and money into making sure that we make the car faster and we can compete for wins. I think we have a lot to build on so I’m looking forward to going racing with those guys.”</p> <p>Christopher is driving the same #00 car that his late Uncle Ted drove several times for Jimmy Paige. That is a special connection for Christopher and he is hoping that he can deliver the biggest win of his career for both himself as well as Jimmy Paige and all the crew members on the #00 team.</p> <p>“It’s pretty cool driving the car,” said Christopher. “Those guys share stories with me about when Teddy drove the car and there’s history there so it’s something extra. Winning in a car that Teddy once drove is one thing that you think about but more importantly, it’s the Sizzler® and it’s a big deal. Winning would be big for Jimmy and all his guys also, they’ve been racing for decades and a Sizzler® win would be huge for them.”</p> <p>The path to NAPA Victory Lane will be a tough road to follow as the Sizzler® entry list is filled with former winners and champions in the modified ranks.</p> <p>“It’s always tough to win at Stafford,” said Christopher. “It’s looking like we’re going to have the same kind of field as the Fall Final and the Sizzler® last year with Ronnie Silk having a dominant car and obviously Matt Hirschman has a dominant car and team. Those guys seem to be on a different level than everyone else. Just looking back at GoPro footage of Ronnie from last year at Stafford you can see just how easy he drove the race which surprised me watching it back. The competition level at Stafford is a very high bar but the double-zero guys have shown they can run up front at Stafford and I think I know the track pretty well. I think the most important thing for us will be to be strong right from the beginning so we need to have a strong heat race and finish up front in our Duel race so we can be in the top-6 or top-8 for the start of the race. You definitely don’t want to get behind the 8-ball at the start of the race because all those other guys are going to be on it. I think if we can unload fast and have a quick package right out of the truck, I think we can have a top-5 finish.”</p> <p>Christopher will also be eager to get his SK Modified® season kicked off on a positive note. Last season saw Christopher struggle with the #82 car for much of the year, but the final 4 races plus the TC 13 Shoot Out saw Christopher post four top-5 finishes, including his second win of the year, and an eighth place finish. Christopher was feeling so good about his car at the end of the season that he and his team did minimal work on the car during the winter and are looking to pick back up right where they left off at the end of 2023.</p> <p>“The SK is ready to go, we just have to put it on the scale,” said Christopher. “We spent a good amount of time this winter organizing things after we moved shops and we had good speed in the car at the end of last year so we didn’t really change anything. We refreshed the engine and we went through the driveline and rear end and things like that but other than that, we didn’t change anything. I normally go through the body and make a new body but I didn’t even do that. I have confidence we’ll be fine come the Spring Sizzler® and that’s a race that I have to personally check off on my list of big races to win in the SK Modified® division.”</p> <p>The 52nd Annual NAPA Spring Sizzler® is set for Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28. Saturday, April 27th and will consist of two 40-lap NAPA Duel qualifying races for the Open Modified division. The 40-lap races will each pay $3,500 to win and will set the field for Sunday’s NAPA Spring Sizzler®. Jankowiak will be piloting his family owned #73 with sponsorship from Automotive Consultants, Florida Safety Systems, and Yukon Creek Sportsman Club. Jankowiak has had the Sizzler® in his sights for the last several seasons, but scheduling conflicts with the ARCA Menards Series had prevented him from making the trip to the Connecticut half-mile facility.</p> <p>“The Spring Sizzler® is a race that I’ve always had circled on my calendar but it usually always fell on Talladega weekend so I haven’t been able to do it the last 2 years,” said Jankowiak. “This year we’ll be in Dover so it worked out and it’s a challenge that I’m looking forward to.”</p> <p>Jankowiak will certainly be facing a challenge when he takes to the track on April 27-28 for NAPA Spring Sizzler® activities. Whereas the majority of the Sizzler® field has plenty of experience to lean on, Jankowiak has one career start at Stafford, finishing 17th in the 2020 Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series event while driving the #59 car for Steve Mendoza. What Jankowiak lacks in experience for Stafford, he more than makes up for with his enthusiasm for Stafford and the NAPA Spring Sizzler®.</p> <p>“I’m racing against a lot of experience, which I don’t have, but we love the challenge,” said Jankowiak. “Every time you step into something new you learn and build to get where you want to go. We’ll be up against the likes of Ronnie Silk and Matt Hirschman but this is a race that I’ve always wanted to compete in and this is the year things finally worked out. It’s always been a goal of mine to win the Sizzler® and I know that’s a lofty goal, but you have to be in it to win it and this will be our first time. It might not be this year or next year, but we’ll take as many shots at it as we can. I have way too much respect for the competition to go there and ever say winning would be anything but impossible, but we’re certainly going to give it everything we’ve got. It’s going to be tough for sure and I don’t have any expectations otherwise, but that’s why we race.”</p> <p>The NAPA Spring Sizzler® will serve as Jankowiak’s first start of the season with his family owned #73 car as well as being his first trip to Stafford since the end of the 2020 season. Jankowiak was on a hot streak at the end of the 2023 season and he’s looking to carry that momentum with him into his Stafford experience on April 27-28.</p> <p>“We were performing really well at the end of last season so we’re hoping to carry that over into this year,” said Jankowiak. “We had a strong run in the Turkey Derby and we won a Southern race at South Boston, so we’re certainly encouraged and I think the biggest thing we’ll be battling is experience. I go to enough racetracks now where I’m used to not being used to them. I think the Sizzler® is one of the crown jewels in modified racing and it’s probably in the top-3 or top-4 modified races on anyone’s list. It’s certainly a race that I want to compete in and if I was fortunate enough to say I won it, it would mean a lot. We’re chasing a W, but I’m sure you probably have to go to Stafford a couple times to really get a handle on the track. So maybe winning is a long term goal but I don’t walk through the gates unless I think I’ve got a shot.
