<p><a data-lasso-id="80441" href="https://www.instagram.com/roshelleflores_/?" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.instagram.com/roshelleflores_/?" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Roshelle Flores</a> didn’t see herself in the beauty icons of her childhood, so, like any ambitious teen with a passion for makeup and skincare, she embarked on a mission to redefine those standards, not only for herself but also for others. “It never really helped that the media and ads never really had anybody that looked like me,” the content creator says while reflecting on her early years in Vancouver. Growing up Filipina in Canada, she experienced firsthand the challenges of fitting into a society dominated by Eurocentric ideals.</p>
<p>Having previously worked as a journalist and now presently as a full-time creator in the beauty space, Roshelle continuously utilizes her platform to ensure others can see themselves celebrated in the beauty narratives prevalent on social media and beyond. “I just want people to know that you can succeed just by looking like yourself,” the 25-year-old tells us. “It’s so important to radiate that in my work.” From her everyday glam, which she describes as glowy with blush for a pop of color, to her minimalist yet constantly evolving style, there’s so much to love about Roshelle.</p>
<p>In her daily beauty routines and the content she shares, Roshelle further emphasizes authenticity and exploration. Whether discussing the newest makeup trends or her go-to looks, she invites her audience to celebrate their individuality alongside her. “I  love to enhance my natural beauty and what makes me feel confident,” she explains. “I think trends are fun and that’s what makeup should be—at the end of the day, it should be fun.” Through her platform, Roshelle continues to inspire others to embrace their identities and experiment confidently, demonstrating that beauty is a personal journey unique to each individual.</p>

<p><strong>Tell me about your relationship with beauty — what’s different from when you were a child compared to now?</strong></p>
<p>Growing up in Canada, being Filipino in a society that highly valued Eurocentric beauty really discouraged me from seeing my own unique beauty. I was always constantly wanting to be white, rejecting my heritage, and I just wanted to fit in. It never helped that the mainstream media and advertisements  never really had anybody that looked like me. I feel like that distorted my identity completely. That’s really where my goals were came to light. Even at such a young age, I just deeply wanted to be valued and seen.</p>
<p>I think that really helps me now: Representation is my goal. I want anyone who watches my content to see themselves in it and see that it’s not just Eurocentric beauty that’s beautiful. We should celebrate our uniqueness and we should understand that our differences are our strengths. We shouldn’t aim to look like somebody we’re not. Representation became something I really valued and something that I continue to want to radiate in my work today.</p>
<p>I want to emphasize that you can succeed just by looking like yourself. It’s so important for me to have that radiate in my work –  I never try to alter how I look; I always do me and do what I feel comfortable and confident in. It took me a long time to feel comfortable in my skin and I hope that by doing what makes me feel good and happy – I inspire others to do the same.</p>
<p><strong>Speaking of, how do you feel about the industry in terms of representation?</strong></p>
<p>I grew up during the YouTube beauty guru era. So you were only seeing white girls in the space and maybe a couple of handful of girls that kind of looked like me, but none that I truly resonated with. I think the current beauty space is definitely more diverse and inclusive than it was before but it has a long way to go.  There is room for everybody in the space — in my opinion, I think that more creators of color deserve a greater spotlight on how talented they are.</p>
<p><strong>How about your everyday makeup look?</strong></p>
<p>What makes me feel the most confident is enhancing my natural features and focusing on what feels good for me. Right now, my go-to look is glowy makeup. I love the glowy makeup look, and the <a href="https://raydarmagazine.com/sabrina-carpenter-fragrance-sweet-tooth-launch/" data-wpil-monitor-id="74" data-lasso-id="80482">Sabrina Carpenter</a> blush thing is going around, which I love because I love blush. I hopped on that trend. I think trends are fun and that’s what makeup should be — at the end of the day, it should be fun. </p>
<p>Trends build community and help you step out of your comfort zone. Like, there was this one trend – the latte makeup that used latte browns and bronzy tones, which isn’t my normal go-to look, but trends help push you to try new things you might not otherwise. I just love glowy, fresh skin. I love when you can feel fresh and look like yourself, that’s kind of my go-to makeup style right now.  It makes me feel put together, confident, and ready to take on my day.</p>

<p><strong>Have you actually gone in that direction of really cakey makeup?</strong></p>
<p>Oh my god, I started with 2016 makeup, and if you know anything about 2016 makeup, it was the dark dip brow, the harsh contour, the cut crease — I was doing that in high school. I probably won’t be rocking that look anytime soon but that’s the beauty of the evolving beauty community. You’re able to express yourself through trends and have your own spin on things.  It kind of pushes you to say, “Oh, this is something that I wouldn’t normally do but I actually like how this turned out so it’s staying in the routine!” That’s one of the best ways to learn new tips and keep your makeup looking fresh.  and I can actually keep doing this with my everyday makeup.”</p>
<p><strong>When it comes to fashion, how would you describe your style?</strong></p>
<p>I wore a uniform until I was about 17, and I’m 25 now. So, my style is relatively young and still developing but I have transitioned from younger, trendy pieces to more of a “capsule” wardrobe — with good quality, staple pieces. As I’ve gotten older, I prefer to spend more on items I’ll wear a lot, rather than trendy pieces that have a short shelf life. My style now focuses more on comfort and less about fitting into something that I won’t feel comfortable in.</p>
<p><strong>What are your wardrobe staples?</strong></p>
<p>It’s crazy that you asked because I donated half my closet last week. I just turned 25 last month so it was important for me to have my style reflect the individual I want to grow into. My closet staples are definitely a good oversized leather jacket, good quality denim and a bunch of good quality blanks like black, white, and grey tees — that’s literally all you need. You can accessorize that, and makeup is an accessory, too, so of course I use that to enhance my looks. I also got a new pair of Miu Miu glasses that I’m obsessed with right now.</p>

<p><strong>Especially as a content creator, do you have any long-term goals or an idea of where you want to be?</strong></p>
<p>I would love to continue creating beauty content and evolving in the space and potentially creating my own makeup product or line. This is one of my more ambitious ideas, but anyone that knows me knows I love beauty but I also love fitness and wellness.</p>
<p>That said, I would love to open a self-care studio. I love Pilates and skincare, so combining my love for beauty, wellness, and fitness could be really cool. I would love to also see myself at a Sephora or as the face of a beauty brand that I really align with for a fun beauty campaign.</p>
<p><strong>What advice would you give to anybody who looks up to you?</strong></p>
<p>I would say don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid to fail, don’t be afraid to start, don’t be afraid of what others think of you. The first step is always the hardest. If you love it, and at the end of the day, when you’re in bed and you’re thinking about what you really want to do, listen to that voice. That voice will always tell you exactly what you want to do, whether or not you want to listen to it. It’s always just going to be that North Star for you.</p>
<p>Never allow other people’s opinions to stop you and make you feel like you’re not doing the right thing or doing enough. The right people will always support and love you. We’re always so fixated on whether or not we’re making the right choice – but the truth is, there’s no right or wrong choice. The right choice is the choice that you make, wholeheartedly.</p>

<p>Julia Pratt’s latest project, <em>Family Feud</em>, is finally out now. The five-song EP builds on the buzz of previous singles like “Carolina” and “Chronos, Cruel Handler.” The latter offering centers on domestic imagery and questions of fault, the energy ramping to a pained confrontation, whereas its predecessor touches upon returning to someone, something, someplace you used to love.</p>
<p><em>Family Feud</em> marks Pratt’s first body of work since 2023’s <em><a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/5KOU6u0Cb475V52b656vQB" data-type="link" data-id="https://open.spotify.com/album/5KOU6u0Cb475V52b656vQB" data-lasso-id="80476" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Two to Tango</a></em>, which housed fan favorites such as “A Little Love” and “Julia, Baby.” Beginning in her voice as a child consumed with her OCD, the songs on the latest EP progress into her teenage years as the scapegoat of the family, into the haunting direct addresses to her father who abandoned her. By the close of Family Feud, Pratt has reached her present voice as an adult, where she can face her trauma with no malice.</p>
<p>“The project is about my family and my relationship with them. I knew I wanted it to be something that made it clear that it’s about a family,” she shares. “This EP is really about me competing with my own family members and trying to be part of the team. It was kind of a joke, but I felt like it fit the project perfectly.”</p>

<p><strong>Let’s take it back to the beginning. What role did music play in your life growing up? </strong></p>
<p>Definitely a big role. I played saxophone for a lot of my life. I was in jazz band and played in an orchestra. Music taught me a lot of discipline growing up and gave me a lot of structure. It was also a really big emotional part of my life. Outside of playing, I listened to music a lot. My parents played music in the house a lot. I found solace in listening to people’s songs. I grew up moving around a lot, and it was nice to hear that, around the world, there were people who felt similar things to me. We don’t express a lot of those things in conversations. So, music was just really big for me in feeling like a person and feeling accepted, I guess.</p>
<p><strong>Are there any anecdotes you maybe haven’t told people before?</strong></p>
<p>I think one thing I haven’t really said before is that I didn’t grow up singing at all. I only started singing publicly when I was in high school. I sang a lot to myself, but I was always embarrassed to sing in front of people. I thought singers and performers were kind of attention-seeking, and I didn’t want to be that person taking up space. So, I looked down on that for a long time and didn’t allow myself to be center stage. </p>
<p>I felt more prideful, wanting to be off on the sidelines. I felt like I had more power that way, which was weird. It was just interesting. Also, growing up playing in ensembles, I really saw music as a collective effort. I felt like if I became a singer, I was taking up all the space. So, I had a hard time stepping into that role. But now, I’ve definitely grown out of that as time has come. But when I was younger, that was a big dilemma for me, like, how do I tell people that I do this and not seem like an asshole.</p>
<p><strong>Tell me about your life as a teenager going into adulthood. What were some of the pivotal moments that defined who you are today?</strong></p>
<p>I lived in Asia for a couple of years as a kid, and I think moving back to the US when I was 13 was the biggest shift for me in my life. Coming back to America was just so different from what I had been living in, and it was a big culture shock. I kind of didn’t feel like home was home anymore. That experience has dictated a lot of my adult life because once I came back to the US, I never really found a place again that was mine and that I felt really comfortable in. </p>
<p>Growing up moving around, I’m very restless, and I struggle to settle down anywhere and define anything about myself. That’s probably the most impactful thing. You can hear it in my music in that I write across genres. I just make music that I enjoy, and one day that could be more country-influenced, the next day it’s very poppy. I don’t like to decide, so I’m just indecisive as a human being.</p>
<p><strong>Before we get into the EP itself, can you explain the reasoning behind the title, <em>Family Feud</em>?</strong></p>
<p>Yeah, so the project is about my family and my relationship with them. I knew I wanted it to be something that made it clear that it’s about a family. But I grew up watching the show “Family Feud” a lot with my grandma. I just thought it would be a funny nod to that, you know, this game show where families compete against other families. But this EP is really about me competing with my own family members and trying to be part of the team. It was kind of a joke, but I felt like it fit the project perfectly.</p>
<p><strong>Starting with “Visions,” the opening track, what inspired this song?</strong></p>
<p>I was just sitting playing guitar, and I wrote it really quickly. There aren’t a lot of words in that song, so it was just a quick write. I was thinking a lot about death, and I don’t think I was feeling panic necessarily, but I was thinking about the panic attacks I used to have as a kid and trying to put into words the weight that death felt like on my shoulders as a kid. It’s like this thing that’s coming and we all know it’s coming. We try to sugarcoat it, but it’s going to come. It was a very fast write, just about that fear, I guess.</p>

<p><strong>Sonically, the final cut, “Michael,” is very different from the other songs on this EP. Can you tell me more about it?</strong></p>
<p>“Michael” is about my dad. I knew stylistically that it was going to be the only piano song on the project. I wanted it to sound old and vintage, so we have this really cool delay on the vocal that makes it sound a bit from a different era. I wanted it to feel very classic, almost like a classic rock ballad, processed and affected but also very raw. The vocal take was done in one or two goes; I didn’t want it to feel polished. I wanted it to feel very natural and authentic. It’s about my relationship with my dad and kind of updating him on who I am as a person since he hasn’t been in my life for a long time. That’s the basis of the song, and I felt the production highlighted the story behind it.</p>
<p><strong>What was your proudest moment while making the record? Did anything surprise you about the creative process? </strong></p>
<p>Producing it was a really cool experience for me because this project feels very organic. We didn’t really use any electronic sounds in it, and some of my music is a bit more produced out, bigger, bolder, electronic. This one just felt organic and natural, yet it had a lot of groove to it. I was really proud of how real it felt. I wanted everything to feel rustic, and that was achieved. That was, I guess, my proudest part of making the record.</p>
<p><strong>How do you think your sound has evolved since your early releases?</strong></p>
<p>I think it’s kind of all over the place, and I think it will continue to be. One way it’s evolved is in how I sing my songs now, especially live. I’m trying to capture that live essence in the recordings a bit more. In my older stuff, I was very focused on making sure the vocal was as perfect as it could be, wanting to feel like this was the perfect take. </p>
<p>Whereas now, I’m more focused on whether it feels the most authentic to the song. Sometimes, my voice will crack, or it’ll be raspy, and over time, I’ve started to really respect those flaws a lot more. I kind of enjoy listening to things on their rawest, realest level. So, I think that’s the major development because, sonically, it’s all over the place, and I have no idea what’s happening next.</p>
<p><strong>Pivoting away from music for a bit, what role does fashion play in your everyday life?</strong></p>
<p>I do love fashion, especially <a href="https://raydarmagazine.com/tyleen-chats-beauty-favorites-and-self-care/" data-wpil-monitor-id="73" data-lasso-id="80479">makeup</a>, jewelry, and hair. Getting my hair done is a big part of my life. I love getting my hair braided, trying new styles, and <a href="https://raydarmagazine.com/how-to-wash-out-hair-dye/" data-wpil-monitor-id="72" data-lasso-id="80480">dyeing my hair</a>. But I think fashion and music really go hand in hand. Every time I write a song, and I’m feeling a certain way, I put that feeling into the song. Similarly, when I wake up in the morning and put on an outfit, I want it to represent how I feel at that moment. I wouldn’t even really say that I have a style because it changes by the day. I just like to reflect how I feel at any given moment. So, I like how the two are connected in that way, and it feels very fluid.</p>

<p><strong>Also, I noticed that you have a whole sleeve of tattoos on your arm — do they have any significant meanings?</strong></p>
<p>Not anymore. When I started getting tattooed, everything had a meaning. My first tattoo is this little timer that says “10 seconds” on it. It was about the idea that you can do anything for 10 seconds, and it was very empowering. Initially, my tattoos had to be empowering. Now, I’m at the point where I just got a bird a couple of days ago because I kind of wanted a bird. There’s no rhyme or reason to it. I just love art and other people’s art. I can’t draw, but if I could, I would totally make my own tattoos. There’s something about being covered in other people’s art, whether it’s tattoos, jewelry, or clothes, that makes me feel so connected to myself. My goal is to be fully tatted at some point in the next couple of years, so I’m working towards that.</p>
<p><strong>Are you worried about what people will think of you afterward?</strong></p>
<p>I definitely was at first. Everyone tells you growing up that if you have too many tattoos, you won’t be able to find a job. In response, I got both of my hands tattooed because I guess I was taking myself out of the running for a corporate job. I’m at the point where anyone who would look down on me or judge me for having tattoos is not someone I want to be involved with in any way, shape, or form. Actually, my tattoos draw people who understand me closer because people will come up and say, “I love your tattoos,” and it’s a great conversation starter.</p>
<p><strong>I really loved the glam for the cover of <em>Family Feud</em>. Did you have any say in how it all came together?</strong></p>
<p>Oh my gosh, that was so fun. Yeah, I work with this photographer, Maddie Napieralski. She takes all my photos, and I love her. That day, we didn’t have any idea what we were going to do. But we had ordered those fabrics from Amazon. I got there, and I knew we wanted to do something with flowers, but we didn’t know we were going to end up gluing them onto my face.</p>
<p>Once I saw, I got this red eyeshadow that day, did the eye look, and then I was like, “Oh my god, we should totally stick them on my face like flower petals.” It was really cool and organic. There wasn’t much direction to what we were doing. What I love about Maddie is, like me, she captures how we were feeling that day, which was pretty and soft and dreamy and glowy and flowy. We just kind of cultivated that image together. It was really fun.</p>

It featured micro-crystal studs and sand pressed directly onto the fabric, shaped using the singer’s bodice as a mold. She took the theme of the “Sleeping Beauties: The Garden of Time” literally and even carried an hourglass as an accessory to the event.</p>
<p>“It feels amazing. Like, I’m so excited to go inside and see all the pictures when I go home,” the singer said. Not only did the dress flare out into a mermaid train, but it sparkled even more as she walked because of the cameras’ flashing lights. Tyla also accessorized with crystal dangling earrings, a gold and silver necklace, and a few silver rings. The hourglass she brought also served as a ‘bag’ as she described it, though it had nothing inside but sand.</p>
<p>The fashion brand shared a carousel on its Instagram account showing Tyla at the event. “You nailed it. She is this year’s best dressed on the theme!” one commented. Another fan also noted, “Seems simple but so extravagant. Great use of the earth element in such a unique way. Absolute favorite.”</p>

<p>In a <em><a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/tyla-2024-met-gala" data-lasso-id="80313" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vogue</a></em> interview, Balmain’s creative director explained the concept behind Tyla’s dress. True to the theme, Olivier Rousteing said they were inspired to transform a “transient material into an everlasting masterpiece.” He was overjoyed by the project’s result and praised the singer, saying he couldn’t think of a better woman to wear the ensemble. </p>
<p>Given the delicate nature of the gown, the event’s handlers helped the Grammy award winner climb the stairs. Three men held the hem, and one lifted her by the waist. </p>
<p>Talking to <a href="https://raydarmagazine.com/emma-chamberlain-goth-glam-paris-fashion-week/" data-wpil-monitor-id="71" data-lasso-id="80322">Emma Chamberlain</a>, Tyla revealed she worked closely with the team that made the dress, and it took two months to finish. “They put it on me, and they molded it to fit me perfectly,” she added. The 22-year-old first emerged on the scene in 2019 but only gained international recognition for her 2023 single, “Water.” That same year, she won a Grammy. In March 2024, she finally released her self-titled album.</p>

<p>According to a press release, the skirt had crystal pendants, pearls, and floral motifs cut from mirror fragments. Given that the look was already high jewelry, it’s understandable why Kardashian’s accessories were minimal. She was only wearing a diamond ring the night of the event. </p>
